Garvin & Testerman Compete in 2022 USA Wrestling Junior and 16U National Championships
By Anthony Cimorosi
FARGO, ND. - Fargo is listed as one of the toughest wrestling tournaments for high school athletes in the country. Hundreds of kids from each state gather together in Fargo, ND to compete for a chance to be a national champion. To be able to qualify for the tournament you need to do a number of requirements. 1. Returning All-Americans qualify the previous year. 2. State champions get in 3. Must place top 2-3 in the Freestyle/Greco state championship. Mason was a runner up in both Freestyle and Greco at the state tournament which qualified him to earn a spot on the Maryland Cadet National team. In his first trip out to Fargo, Mason had a tough first round match up where he fell short against Indiana. After suffering a lost in the round of 64, he bounced back and won four matches in a row (Washington, Nebraska, Florida and California) until ultimately losing his final match of the night to South Carolina. A tough showing

with the top wrestlers at his weight. He hopes to bounce back Wednesday July 20th when he transitions styles from Freestyle to Greco. Mason wrestled for Rising Sun High School last year in the 170lb weight class. Mason is also a Running Back for the Rising Sun Tigers Football Team which
starts next month. He did not want to be trying to cut weight so he went up to the 180lb class for the Fargo competitions. Tyler Garvin won his first MPSSAA Maryland High School Wrestling Championship this past year. Tyler is also double state champion in both Freestyle and Gre-
co. Coming off an All-American tournament last year, taking 4th place in Cadet Freestyle, Tyler added another All-American status to his name this year at Fargo. While his tournament is still going, he won the semi finals round against Montana late Monday evening and will now wrestle on Tuesday to
be a National Champion. Tyler started off strong with a technical fall over North Dakota, another impressive win over Utah and a stellar performance over Iowa that helped lead him to become an All-American!

* On Aug. 4, 1753, George Washington, a young Virginia planter, becomes a Master Mason, the highest basic rank in Freemasonry. Cecil STUDENTS Attend Youth Leadership Conference
Annual Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America host event in Orlando, Florida For student athletes the month of July usually means prepping for pre season, and rigorous summer workouts. For some of the student athletes of Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition the month of July also means traveling to Community Anti Drug Coalitions of America’s Mid Year Youth Leadership Institute to receive cutting edge training on substance use prevention methods, trends in substance use across the country and best practices they can bring home to Cecil County. This year 12 students, six of them local athletes, traveled to Orlando, Florida for the annual conference. There, joined by over 400 youth and 2,000 adults from across the country, they will spend this week studying youth leadership and how to use the Strategic Prevention Framework to address community substance use issues. The SPF model includes work on assessment, capacity, planning, implementation and evaluation. Students use data to assess
challenges their community is facing and develop a logic model to guide future strategies. Essentially, these youth are designing solutions to the problems they are inheriting, and it’s pretty impressive. The Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition has a chapter at each CCPS high school, and each school is represented on this trip. Student leaders will bring back what they have learned and use it to help lead their school based prevention clubs. This year’s trip was planned by Erin Hamson, the DFCYC Youth Advisor. As with everything the coalition does, this was a collaborative effort between Youth Empowerment Source, the parent organization of the DFCYC, Cecil County Public Schools and the Cecil County Health Department. Joining Erin and the youth were Beth Creek, Executive Director of YES, John Roush, Director of Student and School Safety for CCPS, and Virgil Boysaw, Prevention Services Supervisor for the Cecil County Health Department.
Many of this year’s participants had never been to Florida, and with the conference just 20 minutes away from Walt Disney World the organizers felt it was only right to reward the student’s
tireless efforts with a day at Magic Kingdom. “Prevention is all about living life to the fullest and where better to do that than The Happiest Place on Earth?” said Hamson.

GOLD COAST HURRICANES HEADING TO USA GOLD NATIONALS IN OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA CITY Gold Coast Hurricanes SAC National 18U team under Kenny Magersupp has amassed a 25-4-1 record on the season winning tournaments at VA Beach and Asheville NC prior to earning a berth in the USA Gold Nationals in Oklahoma City OK.
Last year they finished 15th in the nation and this years team is primed to make a huge move toward the Championship. Elkton’s Autumn Simpson has started and played all 3 years primarily at SS but this year finds her at 3rd base to help her team.
CHURCHVILLE LIGHTNING 18U TEAM TIES ALL TIME RECORD FOR TOURNAMENT WINS AND THEY ARE NOT FINISHED YET... The Churchville Lightning 18U squad won its sixth tournament of the 2022 season as the team claimed top honors at the Ace of Diamonds Tournament. The 2022 18U team tied the Lightning's All Time Record for 18U tournament wins in a season originally set by the 2010 team. Ironically, both the 2010 and 2022 teams finished either 1st or second in each of the first eight tournament events. The 2010 team finished 2nd at the USSSA World Series and 1st at the AFA World Series, so how will the 2022 fare?

NEW CHAMPIONSHIP BLING FOR THE CHURCHVILLE LIGHTNING 12U CONTINUED FROM COVER
pool play by a score of 4-1 Immediately following the first game, the Lighting played the CT Bombers Teal of Connecticut. Emily H again took the mound, but unfortunately the Lighting committed too many errors and too few hits. Emily H pitched 4 innings and only allowed 2 ERs (6 Hs, 8 Rs, 3 Ks, 2 BBs). May A, Alaina T, Audrianna H, Leah M and Kaylie S contributed with one hit apiece. Audrianna Hpitched in relief and allowed 2 ERs on one hit and one walk (2 Rs, 2 Ks). The CT Bombers Teal would go on to win the game by a score of 10 – 4. One bad inning with two errors and additional mental mistakes cost the Lighting the win. Emma B pitched the final game of pool play against the ‘A’ level Newtown Rock from PA. While Emma B pitched well, the offense and defense could not provide the support needed for a victory. The Lightning committed five errors on defense and the offense was not able to get going with 12 strikeouts in the game against the Newtown Rocks. Only two hits were made against the Rock pitching with both coming from May A. Emma B only allowed 1 ER on 12 hits (3 IP, 10 Rs, 1 K, 1 BB). Churchville lost the game by a score of 10 – 0. The combination of 1 win and 2 losses meant that the Churchville Lighting was regulated to the Silver Bracket of USSSA East National Championship tournament. The Lightning would start bracket play as the 44th seed. To begin bracket play at the East National Cham-
pionships, Emily H took to the mound and pitched 5 innings, only allowing 3 earned runs against the ‘A’ level TC Tremors (6 Hs, 3 Rs, 3 Ks, 1 BB). She also made the biggest contribution on offense with two hits. May A, Audrianna H, and Leah M each contributed with doubles. Churchville Lightning provided ample support to Emily H with 11 hits on the day and only one error by the
the tournament. The Lightning was able to beat the NJ Pride by a score of 13 – 4. As the Lighting continued to march through the winners bracket, the offense and pitching exceled against the PA Xtreme. The Lightning offense produced a total of 9 hits with Emily H leading the way with 3 hits to support her efforts in the circle. May A, Emily H, Alaina T, Leah M, and Kaylie S each pro-
defense. The combination of pitching, hitting, and defense allowed the Lightning to advance to the next round of bracket play by beating the TC Tremors by a score of 10- 3. The offense and pitching continued to perform well in the second game of bracket play against the NJ Pride. The team contributed 9 hits with Kaylie S and May A adding 3 RBIs apiece. In addition to Emily H pitching, she provided two hits and two RBIs. While the NJ Pride were able to push 4 runs across the plate due to defensive lapses (4 errors), Emily H did not give up any earned runs and struck out 7 batters (5 IP, 4 Hs, 3 BBs). Churchville was able to win the game handily, but coaches acknowledged that the team must play better to continue to advancing in
vided doubles to round out the offensive output. Emily H pitched 6 innings with only 2 earned runs (4 Ks, 0 BBs, 6 Hs). Churchville Lighting won the game 8 – 3 and advanced to the quarter finals of the Silver bracket. In the quarter finals, Churchville was scheduled to get another shot at the ‘A’ level Eastern Shore Velocity Blue team who beat the Lighting team twice in a pervious tournament. However, Velocity forfeited the game for unknown reasons which ensured Churchville would advance to the semi-finals against Kaboom. For the semi-final game, Churchville faced the Kaboom from New Jersey. The offense continued to provide support with a team batting average of 0.321 on 9 hits. May A, Emily H, Alaina T, and Audrianna H each con-
tributed doubles to the effort. While the Kaboom scored 1 run in the 1st inning, Churchville got on the board in the 3rd inning with an RBI from Alaina T. With time winding down, the Kaboom hit a two RBI gaper to right-center to take the lead. However, the offense again came through with Billi H driving in Leah M to tie the game. Bases were then loaded for Emily H who hit a shot down the third base line scoring 3 runs. This was enough for the Lightning as Emily H would compete the game in the next inning. Emily H pitched 7 innings, only giving up 4 hits (3 Rs, 0 ERs, 4 Ks, 2 BBs). For the championship game, the Churchville Lighting again faced the Kaboom. Due to poor defensive play, the Lightning were playing catch up for most of the game. Four errors in the first inning allowed the Kaboom to start the game up three runs. Churchville would later tie the game at 3 with doubles from May A and Billi H. Overall, the Lightning hit very well in the game with a team average of 0.345. Adding to the effort were Kaylie S, Emily H, Emma B, Alaina T, and Audrianna H. Emily Hpitched 7 innings and only allowed one earned run (7 Ks, 1 BB, 7 Hs). However, due to the 9 errors, the Kaboom were able to pull out a 9-7 victory, which in turn forced a rubber game for the tournament championship. For the 7th time in the tournament, Emily H took the mound, but this time was backed up by solid defense and excellent offence. The Kaboom scored an early run in the first inning, but were held scoreless until the 6th. In the meantime, the Lightning continued their offen-
sive output with a team batting average of .333 for the game. Emma B had 4 RBIs in the game, including 3 on a base loaded triple. Emily H provided 3 RBIs on 3 hits. May A and Billi H each contributed 2 RBIs apiece. Furthermore, the team only committed 3 errors during the game, none of which lead to runs by the Kaboom. Addison T provided significant action at 3rd base helping to secure the defensive performance. Emily H pitched another gem with only allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 3 (7 Hs, 1 BB). As a result, the Churchville Lighting 12U B team was able to pull out a 9 – 2 victory earning a National Championship ring on the heels of the State Championship. The 12U B Churchville Lightning team improved tremendously throughout the year culminating in a Championship at the USSSA East National Tournament. The team batted .310 with 67 hits on the week and pitching produced a 1.92 ERA. In addition to winning a championship, Emily H won the “Outstanding Pitcher” award (7 Ws, 47 IP, 11 ERs, 35 Ks, 12 BBs) with an ERA of 1.64. In addition, she also won the “MVP” due to her performance at the plate with 14 hits and a batting average of .538 (4 BBs, 10 RBIs). Many of the girls had stand out performances over the course of the week. Alaina T turned in three double plays at shortstop, May A had a standout performance behind the plate and batted .400 for the week. Audrianna H, Kaylie S, Emma B, and Leah H each contributed 5 RBIs apiece to the effort.

Name the song that was pieced together with lyrics from a Cossack folk song (“Koloda-Duda”) and an Irish melody. 5. KATY HAMMER COMPETES IN GIRLS ACADEMY LEAGUE NATIONAL SHOWCASE WITH SPORTING DELAWARE ‘05 GIRLS SOCCER TEAM Add Katy Hammer to the list of Cecil County Athletes who had the opportunity to travel to some cool locations this summer to play the sports they love. Hammer, a Junior this year at North East High School, plays Forward for the Sporting Delaware ‘05 Girls Soccer Team. The team is based out of Wilmington, Delaware playing at Chase Fieldhouse. Katy has played for the team for five years. This month Katy and her teammates traveled to Oceanside, California to play in the Girls Academy Playoff & Showcase in front of Coaches from Colleges across the Country. The Sporting Delaware ‘05 Team played three games. Two games against teams from California and a game against an east coast team from Massachusetts. The girls were able to get some sight-seeing in on the trip as well. They attended a San Diego Padres game and watched them play the Philadelphia Phillies. They were able to go to the San Diego Zoo and trips to the Beach were a favorite destination however one of the most memorable stops was in Oceanside, CA when they spotted the “Top Gun House”. Katy is home now from her week in sunny California awaiting the start of her Junior year at North East High School. She was an All County Mid-Fielder her sophomore year and will probably move up to Forward this year for the Indians. Katy is a three sport athlete at North East playing Soccer, Basketball and Tennis. Last year, during her sophomore year, Katy was named to the All County Team in all three sports. She hasn’t decided on a college yet but we have no doubt they will come looking for Katy Hammer very soon.

PA CHAOS PLACE SECOND IN MYRTLE BEACH AT TOP GUN TOURNAMENT
“That's a 12U wrap! Ultimately not the outcome we wanted today. After pulling out a tough walk-off, extra innings win in the semifinals, they battled in to extra innings again in the finals but came up just short. The work and effort that this team puts in, week in and week out, just amazes us as parents and even just as spectators rooting along. This team went from being a 10-10 team in the Fall, to a 41-10-1 team this summer! And they will only continue to get stronger. As for Lyla, she continues to amaze us with the work that she puts in and the hours that she dedicates to wanting to be her best. At the end of the day, when you grind out 8 innings and lose a championship, and the winning coach seeks you out after the handshakes to let you know "you are one of the best pitchers my team has ever faced"... ...It just makes us so proud of her. Looking forward to what's to come in the Fall at the next level.” - Leon Wescoat IV
