MARYLAND SPECIAL OLYMPICS TORCH MAKES JOURNEY THRU CECIL COUNTY WITH HELP FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS Law Enforcement Agencies from across Cecil County participated this week in the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Tun for Maryland Special Olympics as the torch, known as The Flame of Hope, traveled from Elkton to North East on Monday morning. Among those participating was Class of 2022 Elkton High School Graduate and Valedictorian, Ella Pennington and her Father, Maryland State Police Master Trooper Brad Pennington. Ella first ran in the Torch Run in 2013 with her Father and has participated every year since with the lone exception being last year when the run
was cancelled due to Covid. It’s been a family affair for several years now for the Pennington Family as Ella’s younger sister Cara has also been participating in the race for the past 4 years. Cara is not able to run in the race, so she rides in a racing wheelchair provided by Move To IncluDE in Delaware. Company President Steve Sinko was also participating in Monday’s run and pushed one of the Torchbearers thru the 10 mile trek down Route 40 from Williams Chevrolet in Elkton to North East Park. Ella made a name for herself at Elkton High School in the pool where she graduated last week holding
all but one of the schools swim records. She will now swim for Rowan University in New Jersey and continue her studies while her sister Cara will enter Elkton High School this Fall as a Freshman. Cara’s goal is to get a few of those swim records for herself during her time at Elkton High. After getting the torch to North East it was handed off to Capt. Joe Alton of the Havre de Grace Police Department to continue it’s journey to Towson for the upcoming Opening Ceremonies for Maryland’s Special Olympics.
