Redemption for Rising Sun in Softball States
By Kevin Phillips COLLEGE PARK–Rising
Sun High School found itself in a familiar position in the MPSSAA 2A Softball Championship Game: heading into extra innings tied with Calvert High School.
Unlike last season where the Tigers fell to the Cavaliers in eight innings, this year’s edition ended happily for Rising Sun as it won the state championship for the first time in 20 years with a 1-0 eight inning victory when Josalyn McMillan
plated Catherine Meadows with a sacrifice.
“We have been working at this for a really long time. Last year, we went through a loss in the championship. We ended up in second,” the Tigers’ Cadence Williams said. “We took that and ran with it. We knew what to expect coming into it, and we went after it.”
Before Rising Sun had a chance to win the game in the eighth inning, it had to get through the top half of the inning without allowing a run with the disadvantage of
a free runner on second due to the international tiebreaker rule, and Williams did that just for the Tigers as she retired Calvert in order.
With the top of the order coming up to the plate and the speedy Meadows on second as the free runner, Rising Sun was confident in its chances to secure the state championship.
“There was so much adrenaline. I was so excited to be there. I knew with Catherine (Meadows) being on second and with Jordan (Lynch) batting, there was
no better position to be in,” the Tigers’ Faith McCullough said.
Lynch led things off in the bottom of the eighth with a single to left that put Meadows on third, setting the stage for McMillan.
After Lynch moved to second on defensive indifference to put runners of second and third with no outs, McMillan knew what she had to do to get Meadows home.
“I knew I had a lot of speed on third, so I just wanted to make solid con-

tact with the ball and put the ball on the ground on the right side,” McMillan said during the game’s dramatic final moments. “I just wanted to see the ball, and it went well.”
Instead of hitting the ball on the ground, McMillan hit a line drive to right center field that was caught, but the ball was hit deep enough into the outfield to allow Meadows to tag up from third and race to home plate, beating the throw and scoring the championship-winning run for Rising Sun.
“I was just watching Catherine to see if she tagged up and scored,” McMillan described what she was thinking about after she made contact with the ball.
The Tigers emptied the dugout and ran towards Meadows and McMillan to celebrate a hard-fought championship.
Tiger head coach Paul Taylor knew that the eighth inning was going to be their best chance to win in the short term because of who continued on C5

‘Memory Garden’ exhibit explores childhood memories
NORTH EAST, Md. – Jessica Cooke discovered a passion when she first placed her hands in wet clay in the ceramic studio at Cecil College’s Elkton Station. The feel of the raw materials squeezing between her fingers, followed by the provocation of being able to form her thoughts and imagination into a three-dimensional object, is inspirational.
“Painting has been a passion my whole life. But if I hadn’t decided to attend Cecil College, I would never have discov-
ered my love for working with clay and the empowerment it instills,” said Cooke, a 2018 North East High School graduate. “I now know the direction I wish for my life.”
The culmination of these two passions are currently on display this summer in the Milburn Stone Gallery on the North East Campus of Cecil College. Cooke’s exhibition, Memory Garden, uses sentimentality as a love letter for old childhood memories and to seek closure from in-
evitable realities. Cooke explores nostalgia, grief, forgiveness, and layered identity through detailed paintings and playful ceramics.
The Memory Garden exhibition is just one stepping-stone in her path in life as she builds her portfolio in the art world. Having earned an Associate of Fine Arts degree from Cecil College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Salisbury University, Cooke plans to continue her education and earn an MFA degree from the
University of Delaware. Her current work is a portion of the portfolio she will present for admission to the program.
This Memory Garden exhibit will run from May
19 through August 25, with a reception scheduled for Friday, June 9, from 6 – 8 p.m. in the lobby of the Milburn Stone Theatre. The Milburn Stone Gallery is open
for visitors Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday, Noon to 4 p.m.; and three hours before Milburn Stone Theatre showtimes.

Historic Perryville Run Ends With Boys Lacrosse Title Loss
It wasn’t the ending the Perryville Panthers wanted, but their trip to the MPSSAA 1A Boys State Championship against familiar UCBAC rival Fallston was a historic matchup. Unlike their playoff runs in two previous years, this Panthers squad became the first Cecil County team in history to make it to the title game.
The 19-8 loss to a team with multiple state titles did little to tarnish the ride Perryville took on the back of an aggressive attack and stellar goalkeeping all season. Before the Panthers appearances in the state championship brackets the last three years, only the North East boys in 2014 and Rising Sun girls of 2008 had
made it as far as the state semifinals.
They responded to a quick Cougar 3-0 run to start the game by mounting an early comeback to a 3-3 tie in the first quarter. That’s where the dream ride ended, as Fallston rattled off 10 unanswered goal to put the game and championship out of reach for Perryville.

SAYLOR BARE
Taylor moved from a midfielder and stepped into the leader on the Attack strategy this season. Her Field presents and Verbal IQ directing underclassmen was key to our attack strategy. Taylor’s cutting and feeding were on point and served us well around the 12m. She would join the midfielders on the circle for draw control. She was essential in winning the draws directly or defensively stopping the opponent from transitioning the ball.
Amber is one of the hardest-working and most coachable players I have had in the last few years. She led the team in scoring39 goals and 9 assists (48 points) and a 57% shooting percentage.
Amber was also tough on the draw as a middie helping the team achieve a 51% draw rating

This was Saylor’s first year playing lacrosse and she had quite a positive impact on the team. She picked up the game rather quickly scoring 32 goals, had 5 assists (37 points), and a 51% shooting percentage. Saylor was strong as a middie and was the catalyst for our offensive success this year.
Sarah is an Elite Lacrosse player. Her Lacrosse IQ Skill, and Endurance comes from years of playing club. She works hard at helping her team mates build, their IQ to elevate the team’s play. This is evident in every game we play. Opponents Face guard her and she still assists and scores. Her Transition and defensive play are as well rounded as her Ability to find the net. Defensively Sarah works with in the 12m with 6 teammates, to stop primary scorers.
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
TOME SCHOOL
This season Landen led the team with 93 goals and 32 assists. She had 118 draw controls and 70 ground balls and 20 defensive interceptions. A phenomenal and dedicated athlete, she can play anywhere on the field.
Three-year captain who exemplifies true teamwork, sportsmanship, humbleness, and grace with positivity. She is an outstanding leader and helped many new players in her Tome career. Coachable and great player IQ.
AnnMarie is every coach’s dream player. Wherever she is on the field, she’s making it happen, elevating the team to a new level with her lax IQ and skill. Leading the team in both points and assists, she manoeuvres the chess game of Women’s Lacrosse seamlessly and shares the wealth of knowledge with her teammates. Her passion for and intelligence in the game are simply unmatched. She will be greatly missed at Elkton High, both as a player and person.
LANDEN CAIN
This season Landen led the team with 93 goals and 32 assists. She had 118 draw controls and 70 ground balls and 20 defensive interceptions. A phenomenal and dedicated athlete, she can play anywhere on the field.
Draw specialist, controlling the game immediately off the circle. A top scorer at midfield and always a dominant threat and danger that opponents cannot control, even being double or triple teamed. Landen is remarkably aggressive to goal, an incredibly fast and agile player, causing turnovers with intense defense and uniquely quick feet, adding relentless pressure, and causing turnovers and capitalizes on ground ball control. She played at midfield for almost the entirety of every game with no substitutions due to a small team roster

Abby is one of our most athletic team members and has dominated in the midfield taking the draw, causing turnovers, and stopping the ball on fast breaks. She has demonstrated impressive leadership skills managing transitions, taking charge on offense, and playing strong defense. She has really come into her confidence this year as a player and has been such a strong asset to our team. We are looking forward to seeing her continue to progress as a leader and player.
Tori has had a phenomenal sophomore season and really showed improvement in her skills from last season. She is a strong, athletic player and made a huge difference in causing turnovers, facilitating fast breaks, and assisting with getting draw controls. Her speed is undeniable and she plays vicious defense, especially in the midfield. Tori has such a great attitude and is always willing to take coaches advice and put it into action. We can’t wait to see what next year holds for her.
HANNAH TUCKER
Hannah has been an outstanding defenseman for the 3 years she played for Bo Manor. She was tasked with playing against the opposing team’s top offensive player. She is a natural leader and constantly talked with her teammates to help them know when to hedge, crash or to push out and pressure their offensive player. She also did a wonderful job clearing the ball to our offensive side of the field.
COACH OF THE YEAR
GALANO
1st yr Field player, Jillain was the JV goalie last year. This season,we set out to have goalies split time. So, Jillian worked on field defense, Well, we can say she proved she is a field player. Jillian’s Basketball IQ, Had her prepared for the 8m defense strategy. She is aggressive at stopping the drive and taking a charge. Her goalie experience has helped with, being aware of where the ball is, and recovering deflected shots is her specialty.
For 3 years Emily has quietly defended the 8m with determination. Her defensive IQ , and her aggressive play not keeps opponents on their heals. Emily isn’t afraid to jump in when a goalie yells crash. Emily doesn’t back down or take the pressure off. She is key in moving quickly at getting the goalie clears up the field. Our defensive game is why we advanced to the Quarter Final State Game.
2yr Varsity goalie, Samantha works hard on her Goalie Lax IQ. The biggest strength is communicating with players. Snap decisions, on where she sees the threat is coming from. Her leadership is also seen in practice , halftime and timeout talks. Her positive nature and blunt delivery fires up the team. Academically she is in the top 10 of her class. Enrolled in the BioMed program, NHS Class President, and Spanish NHS.
FRESHMAN TO WATCH NORTH EAST INDIANS
Coach Burkhardt led North East to our first winning record in over 10 years and guided us all the way to the regional championship game. This season everyone contributed to the teams success. Burkhardt preached to us that we need to play as a team to win and also that we are the only ones that can determine the outcome. He is always positive and humorous ( very humorous) and his upbeat attitude is infectious. Burkhardt created an encouraging environment, which is essential for the success of any team. After a rough loss he came back the next practice ready with a plan to tackle how to fix any little error and come back even stronger. His passion for the game is undeniable and his love for his players is even stronger. Burkhardt deserves this recognition.

I wish everyone in the county could watch Zane practice. He was incredible to watch during the games but was even better in practice every day. The best thing I can say about Zane is he played out of position for 1.5 years for the good of the team. His physical presence on face off wings, ground balls, and defense was invaluable. He complemented all of that was a hammer of a shot on the offensive end. Without question the gas that made our engine go.
Josh is the back bone of our Team. He is the our inspirational leader and Defensive Captain.
Josh is always paired up against the opposing teams #1 Attackman.
Kurt was Perryville’s top defender this season with 25 forced turn overs and 39 groundballs in the regular season. Kurt had one score on the season and 3 assists.

COACH DAVE CAIN
I never played lacrosse before high school. In my freshman year I was disappointed when Coach Cain handed me a long pole and put me on defense. But under his guidance I came to love my role on the team. Four seasons and a MIL Championship later, I realize that Coach Cain was always trying to make me into the best player I could be. He did the same for every other player on our team. Coach Cain inspired all of us to not only play our hardest on the field, but to be the best men that we could off of it. He is a prime example of what a coach and role model should be, and our team wouldn’t have come as far as it has without him.

During the regular season Nick led the team stats with 44 groundballs. He has 18 goals and 10 assists, eight Face-off Wins and nine forced turnovers.
LONG STICK
Gavin developed himself into our #1
Ben led the Bo Manor defense this season. Recorded 31 groundballs in the regular season and one assist.
Athletic defensemen who can cover almost any attackman. Height and speed combine with his footwork make an excellent on ball defense. Captain of the defense led him to making crucial defensive changes on the field. Keeps his head on a swivel to make an outstanding off ball defender.
The unquestioned leader of our team. Even though he played in the goal Phils attitude and effort showed the other 30 players the way to an MIL Championship. A tireless worker always asking the coaches and other players for extra reps and extra work. His communication was key to leading a defense that gave up 3.7 Goals per game. Extremely active around the goal so it is like we get to play with 7 defenders. Fast and accurate outlet passes often led to transition goals for our offense.
Ethan became a coaches’ dream with a pole this year. He could cover anyone middie or attack defensively, he has Velcro in his stick on ground balls, and then he uses his flat out speed to create early offense for us. His play could literally change games in seconds by getting the ball up and out of our zone and down to our attack in a flash. His game IQ increases everyday and finished the season with 6 assists.
FACE OFF
GRAYSON ITTNER JUNIOR
Grayson makes his first appearance on an all county team this year as the Panthers Faceoff Specialist. Grayson has 64 face-off wins and 31 groundballs and found the net twice this season.

CADENCE WILLIAMS
Cadence had another great season this year and showed a true team understanding by becoming our main relief pitcher. She was fantastic in all the games that she started (5-0) and went the whole way. She recorded 118 strikeouts during the season. Through the years Cadence has been a dominating pitcher who owned the mound every time she entered the circle. She is a team leader who embraces every player and unifies the team.
FAITH MCCULLOUGH
Faith was stellar for us in the pitching circle this year. She was our main starting pitcher and truly embraced that role. She was undefeated this year as a starter in the regular season as well as playoffs (11-0) and also recorded 102 strikeouts. She came in clutch for us at the plate as well. I will miss her tenacity and drive to be successful.
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
RISING SUN TIGERS JORDAN LYNCH
BRI COLE
Bri has been great all season behind the plate. She calls the game and works with all of our pitchers to ensure they are on the same page. Her defensive skills are top notch and her reputation of having a strong arm has made opponent runners weary to even lead off the bases. Her bat was just as important with many key hits this season including her 3 home runs and 21 RBI’s. She is smart and determined to be successful and I look forward to have her back next year .
REAGAN HASSELL JUNIOR
Stepped up big at first base this year and became a leader in the infield and had many huge plays and double plays at first including the late double play against CM Wright in the playoffs and momentum changer vs Aberdeen where she completed an unassisted double play herself tagging the girl going to first and the runner going home. Led the team with 4 HR’s this season, including a huge 3 run blast in the playoffs that provided some insurance runs to get the playoff victory vs CM Wright.
JOSALYN MCMILLAN JUNIOR
Josalyn was a key catalyst to our championship season. She always came up with the clutch hit or rally starter for us at the plate. She was the best 2 strike hitter I have seen in a long time. Her glove was equally effective as she made all the routine plays and made some very stellar ones at critical moments. Her 11 doubles led the team and her 19 RBI’s were among the teams best. I look forward to another year with Josalyn next season.
PITCHER OF THE YEAR
RISING SUN TIGERS
RILEY JACKSON SENIOR PERRYVILLE
Riley Jackson embodies what it means to lead by example. Playing hard, inspiring teammates to win, and exceptional execution is what we got from Riley. She made diving plays, threw off of her knees, made over the shoulder catches, and made routine plays look routine. As a hitter, she lead our team in most offensive statistics. Lastly, she was an immediate threat to score once she reached base, stealing all eleven of her attempts, and always looking at the opportunity to take another base.
CADENCE WILLIAMS
Jordan dominates the field of play every game she steps into the field. She leads by example and her pure hustle on every play. She played a shut down third base then moved to shortstop and did the same exact thing. Her stellar defense enabled us to have the success we did this season. Her bat is always on fire and her 40 hits led the team to go along with her 6 home runs and 15 extra base hits. She is also a threat on the bases with her unbelievable speed. She is a joy to coach and always portrays a no quit attitude. She truly exemplifies what every coach wants in a player. I am so lucky to have her back again next year to help with the younger players coming up.

ALISSA BRODERDORP
Alissa Broderdorp was one of the four freshman to make an impact for the Eagles this year. Alissa is a player that always gives 100% and is a true competitor. She truly enjoys the game her joy is contagious in the dugout. She took the lead off spot in the line up and ran with it. Alissa ended with a .371 batting average which included 3 doubles and a triple. We can’t wait to see how she continues to develop over the next 3 years.
ADDIE SAMPLE JUNIOR
Addie Sample is a true athlete and competitor. She is willing to play anywhere that will help the team.
This year she was the leader in the Eagles outfield playing most games in center field. She is a coaches dream, willing to do whatever is asked of her. Addie really stepped up to lead the team when our seniors went out with injuries. She played an instrumental role offensively boasting a .396 batting average including 2 doubles, 2 triples, and her first homerun. Addie was also a threat on the bases.
COACH OF THE YEAR
LEEANN PUGH
LeeAnn Pugh, while sharing duties in the circle and commanding the outfield from center, led the Elks in hits (31), runs scored (27), and stolen bases (15). Posting a .492 batting average and .652 on base percentage, she used her speed to consistently challenge the defense, and collected 12 RBI and 5 triples form the leadoff spot.
COACH BROOKS MALSTROM
Coach Brooks Malstrom and the Bo Manor Eagles went 6-11 last year but came back for a 2023 season that surprised most of Cecil County. The Eagles went 16-3 this season with only two regular season loses to the State Champion Rising Sun Tigers and previous State Champion Patterson Mill Huskies. With a team consisting of mostly freshman and sophomores the Eagles will be a tough opponent and strong contender for a playoff run in 2024.
Maddie, while spending time in both the circle and shortstop, led the Elks in slugging (.879), RBI (16) and home runs (6). Ending the season with a .431 batting average, .567 on base percentage and 18 runs scored, Maddie was a solid 3 hitter, keeping pressure on opponents pitching.
Mariah Penta has been an impact player for the Bohemia Manor Eagles her entire High School career. Mariah is a middle infielder but stepped up this season to pitch 13 games with no loses. Mariah is a team player and a team leader. She led the team in hitting with a.660 batting average which included 10 doubles, 4 homeruns and 23 RBI’s. She is a pleasure to coach and we wish her great success as she continues playing softball at Auburn University next year.

Jazmyn lead her team in pitching with 6 wins and had 63 strikeouts and a 3.1 era. Leader on the mound that competed everytime she stepped on the field or in the batters box. Lead the team in avg (.424) and RBI’s with 14. Jazmyn is an exciting player to watch. Her work ethic throughout the season and off season, is what made her a successful softball player and will continue to in her next 3 years.
THIRD BASE
KYLEE BERGMAN
Kylee Bergman, a sophomore, was a huge contributor for the Eagles this season. She finished the season with the second highest batting average on the team at .410 including 9 doubles, 3 triples, and 2 homeruns. She also lead the Eagles in RBI’s at 30. Kylee played through numerous injuries, never wanting to come out of the game. Her teammates count on her for her reliable production, both offense and defense, and her knowledge of the game.
Kelsey was one of our starting pitchers this year and recorded a 6-1 record. She was consistent and kept hitters off balance. She is a smart pitcher that embraced the shared starting role all season. She was also clutch at the plate with 2 home runs and 15 RBI’s. She played 1st base flawlessly when she wasn’t pitching. I will miss her kindness and her willingness to do whatever it takes to make the team better.
Bri Rebman was the brains of our defense. Without her, we struggled (0-6)and when she selflessly battled through aches and pains, she made our team formidable against anyone (11-4). She managed and called pitches for three different pitchers. She kept runners close to bases and picked them off when they dared to steal or get aggressive. She held down the 3/4 spot all year as an impact bat all year.
OUTFIELD
CATHARINE MEADOWS SENIOR
Catharine is hands down the best defensive center fielder I have had on my teams. Her pure hustle and determination are unmatched. She uses her speed and strong arm to keep runners from taking that extra base. Her speed on the base paths has enabled us to be aggressive on the bases. She has come up with some rally starting hits for us this year and her 12 stolen bases and 20 runs scored have enable us to be successful. I will truly miss her determination, her drive and most of all her as a person.
KAYLA BRUSTMAN
Kayla Brustman played an impact role for our team as one of our defense’s most improved players. Though she led the Panthers in inning pitched, she also led the team in innings played at first while posting solid offensive numbers from the middle of our lineup. Kayla was second on our team in RBIs and doubles, hit a home run, and was fourth in batting average and OPS.
SHALLCROSS
Kaylyn Shallcross is a talented infielder that helped lead the Eagles to a very successful season. She was also an offensive threat this season finishing with a .345 batting average including 5 doubles, 1 triple and a homerun. Kay is a slick fielder, a skilled base runner, and a valued leader. The team and coaches will miss Kay next year.
DIXON
Sam played stellar defense at shortstop this year and was part of a strong middle for us. She was our lead off hitter who got things started in many games and once she got on she used her intelligence and speed to put pressure on other teams. Her 12 stolen bases speak to that fact. Her drive for success and joy of playing the game make her special. I am excited to see her return next year and also provide support and rive to our younger players coming up.
TEAGAN SPIER FRESHMAN
Taegan Spier had a huge impact on our success this year. After losing an arsenal of outfielders to graduation and not returning, Taegan called center field her home most of the year. Her combination of speed, athleticism, and strong, accurate throwing were attributes we could not do without. She finished the season strong offensively reaching bases in 7 of 11 playoff plate appearances and also notched a win in the circle vs Patterson Mill.
MAKENZIE LANGSHAW SENIOR
Leader and heart of the team, who played with effort every second on that field whether it was pitching, centerfield, or having a great at bat, you knew she would give it her all. An unselfish player that would do anything for her team and never showing negativity when things didn’t go her way. Always willing to help out wherever needed and would always be willing to make adjustments or changes. Lockdown center fielder who could step in at any time and give her team some solid innings.
JAYDEN SIMPKINS SENIOR
Jayden played catcher and right field for us and was very versatile all season. She came up with many clutch hits throughout the season. Her 26 RBI’s led the team and shows that she came through in many tough situations. She played well in the field and was always flexible to do whatever was asked for the betterment of the team. I will miss her smile, her versatility and her ability to come into situations and deliver.
ASHLEY WIDDOES
Ashley is a leader on the field and is extremely knowledgeable about the game of softball. Her calm demeanor brings a sense of stability for her teammates. At the plate, Ashley delivered in critical situations throughout the season with a batting average of .654 and an on base percentage of .710. Ashley sets a very high standard for herself and motivates her teammates to perform to the best of their abilities. She is a 5 tool player that leads by example on and off the field.

they had coming up to the plate and who the Cavaliers had coming up to the plate in the top of the ninth inning.
“I knew when Catherine was the runner on second in extra innings, I couldn’t ask for anything better with Jordan at bat and Catherine on second base,” Taylor said. “I knew we better take advantage, or we would have been hurting because I didn’t want to roll into the ninth inning and keep demanding our pitchers to keep getting people out. That was our opportunity, and that’s what I told them that ‘it’s gotta happen now.’”
One of the main reasons why Rising Sun was positioned to win the state championship was the strong combined pitching performance from McCullough and Williams. The pair took a combined perfect game into the seventh inning, retiring the first 19 batters before Calvert’s Grace Atherton singled with one out in the seventh.
By the time the game ended, McCullough and Williams combined to pitch eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and giving up no walks while striking out eight.
McCullough took to the pitching circle first and threw three perfect innings and striking out four, and her game plan was to give what the Cavalier batters gave her.
“I was so excited to be there. Honestly, my goal was just to get the ball in the strike zone. If they strike out, that’s great, but mainly I trust my defense,” McCullogh said. “I just wanted to put the ball in there and get the batter out.”
Williams came into the game in the fourth inning and stymied Calvert, retiring the first 10 batters before the Atherton single, and the combination of her curveball and the fastball to the outside corner kept Calvert off-balanced.
It was the seventh inning where Williams faced the most danger when
Calvert had its best scoring chance when it had runners on first and second and two outs, but Williams put all of that out of her mind and proceeded to get Alexis Drayer to ground into a force play to end the inning.
“Honestly, I was just trying not to think at that point because overthinking doesn’t get you anywhere,” Williams, who finished with four strikeouts in five innings, said. “I was just focusing on getting the next girl out and relying on my defense because they are good behind me.”
The victory comes one year after the Tigers suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in eight innings in the 2022 state championship game, and they used that loss as their motivation to get back into this position and redeem themselves.
“Coming off of last year and feeling the anger and devastation that we went through, it feels so much better to win it this year than it would have if we won last year,” McCullough said.

Cecil College continuing education division receives new name
ELKTON, Md. – Cecil College has launched the new name of its career and community education division to more accurately represent the vast array of programs provided and more closely align its identity with fellow continuing education divisions at higher learning institutions in Maryland and beyond. The new name is Continuing Education and Workforce Development, making it more relatable to the public’s perception.
“While we provide education for career advancement and community engagement, we also offer a variety of programs and courses for personal enrichment and lifelong learning. Continuing Education and Workforce Development better encompasses these additional areas,” said Miles Dean, Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development.
The new name aligns with other colleges and universities that use similar terminology, making it easier for students and employers to understand what is offered.
“Continuing education” is widely used
Cecil College celebrates new turf field
in education and is often associated with non-degree programs designed to provide additional training and skill development beyond a traditional college degree. Meanwhile, “workforce development” emphasizes Cecil College’s commitment to providing education and training that prepares individuals for the workforce.
The new name, “Continuing Education and Workforce Development,” is widely used, making it more likely that potential students and employers will recognize the scope of Cecil College’s non-credit programs, which include skilled trades training, healthcare careers programs, commercial driver’s license training, and more.
To learn more about the programs offered by Cecil College through Continuing Education and Workforce Development, please visit www.cecil.edu/ConEd, call 410287-1078, or email info4u@cecil.edu.
NORTH EAST, Md. – This week, Cecil College expanded its athletics facilities with local and college guests in attendance at the official ribbon cutting for the new turf field on the North East Campus. “Today, we celebrate the new Seahawk Turf Field, which marks a new chapter for Cecil College’s Athletics program. I want to thank the state of Maryland for their generous support of this project. Our student-athletes can now practice and compete here on the North East campus,” said Cecil College President Dr. Mary Way Bolt.
This turf field is located next to the Physical Education Complex and replaces the grass field. Members of Cecil College men’s soccer and prospective women’s soccer teams were present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, but this field can also be used for other athletics.
Cecil College fielded its first soccer teams in 1972, and the Seahawks have been playing at Calvert Regional Park for the past five seasons. The addition of the turf field bodes well for Cecil College’s recruiting for men’s and women’s soccer programs.
“Facilities are always a key piece to the recruitment of new student-athletes; upgrading the field will help strengthen the programs. It will also allow us to host
NJCAA Regional tournaments. In speaking with current team members, they are extremely excited to get started on the new field,” said Cecil College Athletic Director Ed Durham.
Cecil College currently fields men’s and women’s athletic programs in soccer, cross country, and basketball, along with baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball.
Plans for this new turf field began in September 2022 with funding provided through Maryland’s Community College Grant Program. SCG Fields, which specializes in constructing high-performance natural grass and synthetic turf athletic facilities, was the contractor and engineering firm with Shaw Sports Turf managing turf installation. The field design incorporates an enhanced field drainage system and upgraded electrical infrastructure to include a new electrical supply on both sidelines.
“This project enhances and supports the College’s mission to provide top-notch facilities for our students. The College appreciates the collaboration with our State and County agency partners as it relates to project funding along with design reviews and permitting that facilitated the successful implementation of this project,” said Vice President of Finance and Administration Christopher Mills.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
PERRYVILLE PANTHERS
JOHN FERRY SENIOR
John Ferry was an unremarkable runner his junior year - being a late-bloomer to finding the sport of running. Over the summer before his senior year, he put in a lot of miles and committed to being his best - and it showed! John has been nothing but a pleasure to work with. His smile and his laid-back attitude were a great model for others on the team. John will be running for D2 Goldey Beacom College after graduation.
MATT MCKAY
Matt McKay spent the first half of the season finishing 2nd to John Ferry. One day at practice, a switch flipped, and you could see he was frustrated there. He focused on the mile, working on his speed work, and eventually found the success he was looking for. Matt’s PR this year was a 4:33 mile. He was a valuable member of the 4x800 and 4x400 meter relays this season. Matt looks forward to the cross country season, and his goal is to break 4:30 next year.
DANIEL KATZ JUNIOR
Daniel Katz was a state qualifier this year in the 3200. He ran a very inspired race at the Region Meet in Kent Island. Through his work with Coach Purner, he has revealed his potential. His PR at the Region Meet demonstrated the results of his hard work.
Throughout his busy school schedule Daniel has managed to put in quality training. He has been our most versatile athlete by running races from the 800 to the 3200 and multiple relays.
DAIN LENZ SOPHOMORE
Dain competed in the 110m and 300m Hurdles at the State Championships. In the 300m he placed second at the Cecil County Invitational, and first at the UCBAC Susquehanna Meet. Dain advanced to the State Finals after a fourth place finish at the 1A East Region Championships and ended the season with a ninth place finish in the 300m and seventh place finish in the 110m at the State Championships.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
NORTH EAST INDIANS LEANNA ROGERS
ANNA CALLAGHAN
Anna came into the Indoor season with confidence and the willingness to work hard. She excelled at any event she triedespecially the 800 and the mile. Anna was tremendously helpful to our relay teams. She is a brave racer - she is not afraid to take charge of a race and give it 100%... and then do it all over again for another event shortly after. Anna has now met the “walk on” requirements for competing at the University of Delaware.
LEANNA ROGERS
Leanna came off a great fall and winter to dominate this spring. She just keeps getting stronger and faster. She is incredibly coachable, allowing her to break a 41 year old school record. Leanna has her sights set on breaking 2 more records in the next 2 years and we are incredibly excited to see her do it! Every day she pushes herself and is always driving to be better and faster. The future is bright for her!

Katie is a very gifted athlete. She has developed from a people pleasing athlete- to a competitor who is fierce and is willing to take risks. Katie’s versatility in events (from hurdles, to mid-distance, to jumping events), she can do it all. Katie was our top point scorer for the season. We look forward to seeing her bloom over the rest of her high school career and beyond. Katie also broke the 300M Hurdle school record this year (47.29)

COACH JILL MCKAY
Coach McKay is our head coach of all three running seasons. Cross country, indoor track, and out door track and field. She always encourages all of her athletes to push their limits to become the best competitors they can be. She helps us through set back and bad races to always look on the bright side, and that not every race will bring a personal record.
One thing all of the track athletes hears from coach is to put in the hard work early. To push our limits and what we think we are capable of. She refers to it as putting money in the bank, it will be saves for when u need it most in a race. She is even organizing the Inaugural Cade Milburn Tiger trio race this summer for our athletes and the community to enjoy all running has to offer. She has brought up our team from only sending one qualifier, to both girls and boys teams qualifying for MPSSAA state XC championships. And this year sending 14 athletes with two relay teams to the MPSSAA 2A state track championships. She even helps create friendships between our athletes with putting together pasta parties in the fall and bringing ice pops to reward us at practice. She always makes sure we have great memories from each season. We are thankful for all Coach McKay does for us throughout all of our seasons.

HAILLE DRY SOPHOMORE
In her first year throwing, Haille has surprised and impressed us in the circle. She is a true competitor who gives everything she has and takes both successes and failures to heart. Though incredibly quiet at practice, she is an incredibly hard worker and disciplined athlete. We are very excited to see what she can do in the next two years, she has so much potential. We see many more returns to states ahead!
CAROLINE MERCER JUNIOR
Caroline is an athlete who flies under the radar. It is not common for a shot put and discus athlete to also be among the top in the team for the 400 and 200 as well. Caroline is tough - she is a chaser - and she never backs down from a competition. Caroline broke the school record in the discus this year (121’8”) and is # 2 all time in the shot put (33’9.5”). She is also .01 seconds from the school record in the 100 Dash, too (hand timed). Caroline is a fantastic athlete.
SNYDER SENIOR
Alyssa has spent several years honing her craft and soaring to higher heights in pole vault. She made huge improvements this season hitting new PRs several times. She is always a bright and positive part of our team who is willing to take on extra responsibilities for the team. She has taught our new and curious vaulters how to vault, prepping the next generation of NEHS vaulters. We will miss her next year!
FRESHMAN TO WATCH PERRYVILLE PANTHERS
Our 4x400 meter relay team broke the school record this year. (4:10.34) It was a very tough group to put together because we had several female athletes who wanted, and could have earned, their place on the team. The 4x400 is a much-coveted position on the team. However, between injuries, and performance plateaus, these 4 rose to the top and qualified for states, where they tied their school-record-breaking time. Mandy and Anna are moving on to college - we will miss them greatly - but their best days are still ahead of them! Caroline and Katie will be back, and we’ll see who takes those other two positions next year. It will be fun to watch.

They have excellent sportsmanship and often hear how nice they are to play from their competition. They both were team captains this season and were great leaders and motivators for their teammates. They are the kind of players that coaches love to have on their team!!
GIRLS DOUBLES
