ELKTON JUNIOR ALL STARS CLAW BACK, BUT FALL JUST SHORT AGAINST RISING SUN

HAVRE DE GRACE - Despite a 4-run deficit in the third inning, The Elkton Junior All-Stars almost came all the way back, eventually falling 16-15 to Rising Sun on Tuesday night in Havre de Grace, MD. The Elkton All-Stars scored nine runs in the failed comeback on a single by Brayden Jones in the fourth, a walk by Ryan Roberts in the fourth, a single by Ryne Dominick in the fourth, a single by Chase Monaghan in the fifth, another single by Brayden Jones in the sixth, a groundout by Monaghan in the sixth, and an error during James (JJ) Todd’s at bat in the sixth. Both teams ex-

changed the lead back-andforth in the game, but Rising Sun eventually took the lead for good thanks to an error in the sixth inning and a rapidly setting sun on a field with no lights. Each team battled for over three hours until the officials finally had to call the game saying it was too dark to play. The Elkton All-Stars got on the board in the first inning when Lucas Kilgore’s wild pitch allowed one run to score for Elkton. Rising Sun scored six runs in the second inning. Joe Thomason, Jackson Duvall, Liam Cooper, and Dylan Blankenship powered the big inning with RBIs.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

* Dragonflies can control all four of their wings independently. * The first person in the U.S. to use the “temporary insanity” defense was Daniel Sickles -- a Union general, senator and congressman -- after murdering the son of Francis Scott Key, composer of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” who was having an affair with Sickles’ wife. Sickles was acquitted.

VELOCITY XPRESS TRACK ATHLETES SHINE AT AAU NATIONAL QUALIFIER

Written by: Amanda Callaghan and Katie Callaghan

Although middle school and high school track seasons ended with the school year, track still continues for gifted athletes of all ages thanks to the Amateur Athletic Union’s (AAU) summer club track and field season. The local club team Velocity Xpress, based in Elkton, has been having a very successful season! Athletes from ages 5 to 18 have been winning events and improving their times since the beginning of the summer. The recent weekend of June 23rd - 26th held a very important meet for the team: the AAU Region 3 National Qualifier Meet. Taking

place at the PG Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD, it was at this meet that runners had the opportunity to qualify for the AAU Track and Field Junior Olympics, to be held in Greensboro, North Carolina from July 30th to August 6th. The up-and-coming Velocity Xpress Track Club had a great showing at the qualifying meet! 8-year-old John Bailey qualified for Junior Olympics in both the Shot Put and Turbo Javelin events, earning second place in the 8-and-under Shot Put as well as second in the Turbo Javelin. 12-yearold Bradley Carlson qualified for Junior Olympics in both Shot Put and Discus, earning sixth in 12-year-old Shot Put and second in Discus.

In running events, 11-year-old Declan Carter earned third in the 3000 and fourth in the 1500, qualifying for the Junior Olympics in both events. 10-yearold Truly Paskings qualified for Junior Olympics in the 800 and 1500, winning the 10-year-old 800 and coming in second in the 1500! 15-year-old Katie Callaghan earned fourth in the 15-16 800, qualifying in the event, and 17-year-old Amanda Callaghan earned fifth in the 17-18 800, qualifying for Junior Olympics in the event as well. Honorable mentions include 14-year-old Alexis Carlson throwing terrifically in the Shot Put, 10-year-old Abby McCullough running strong in the 800 and throw-

ing far in the Turbo Javelin, and the 15-16 4x100 relay team of Rayna Robertson, Caroline Mercer, Taylor Pate, and Sage North were quick and performed extremely well. The talented athletes who qualified now have the chance to compete at the 2022 AAU Junior Olympics. If you would like to fund these young athletes and their track endeavors visit www.velocityxtc.org to donate. Any money to help the athletes get to North Carolina is greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for updates on these amazing athletes and their future track success!

Churchville Lightning 12U Wins USSSA Maryland State Championship CONTINUED FROM COVER

Blues. The Lightning again fell behind 3-2, but in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lightning put together a string of hits and took a 5-3 lead. This was all Emily Hildt would need to secure a berth in the championship game. The Bayside Blues prevailed out of the losers bracket and would have a rematch with the Churchville Lightning in the championship game. After the Blues went three up, three down in the top half of the first inning, the Lightning wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Emma Bare led things off for the Lightning in the bottom of the first and with a 2-1 count, Bare belted her 3rd home run of the season over the centerfield fence. The Lightning would score 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning.

After surrendering 2 runs to the Blues in the top of the second, Emma Bare would have a lead off single in the bottom half of the inning to get things started for the Lightning. Several batters later, Alaina Torrence would crush her 4th home run of the season to deep right center field and the Lady Bolts would score 4 more runs and lead 8-2 after 2. In the top of the 3rd, Emily Hildt handled the Blues easily and the Lightning would come to bat again. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Lightning would score 6 runs and the game would end in a mercy rule with a final score of 14-2. For the tournament, Emma Bare would lead the Lightning offensively batting .750 for the weekend with a home run. Emily Hildt would contribute as well with 5 RBI and going 4-0 in the circle.

Hildt only surrendered 9 runs in 4 games while striking out 30 batters with a 1.84 ERA. The Lady Bolts batted .313 as a team and the defense had a .932 fielding percentage. Everyone on the team contributed to this championship win in one way or another throughout the weekend. This team had lost 3 tournaments this season in the semi finals to the eventual tournament champions. Those tough losses are what helped propel the Churchville Lightning to the USSSA Class “B” State Championship

It wouldn’t be an American summer get-together without grilled chicken brushed with barbecue sauce. To help you enjoy more time with your guests and not worry about under cooking, we completely precook the chicken in the oven and keep it refrigerated up to 1 day. Then, when you’re ready to dine, just warm up the chicken on the grill and brush on your favorite sauce.
