2022-2023 WINTER ALL COUNTY ISSUE

CCPS COMMUNITY:

Superintendent's Update:

Last month, the Board of Education approved the FY24 CCPS Budget Request which now goes to County Executive Danielle Hornberger who is in the process of developing the county’s proposed FY’24 budget which will then go to the County Council for approval. Now is the time to advocate for fully funding the CCPS budget request. CCPS has been funded at the Maintenance of Effort (MOE) level for two consecutive years (FY'22 & FY‘23), which is the minimally required level allowed by law. This level of funding has a direct and negative impact on our ability to support students.

Continued lack of funding over the past several years, has required numerous position cuts in CCPS, ultimately resulting in increased class sizes. The current CCPS budget proposal that was sent to the County Government includes 64 additional positions that include paraprofessionals and teachers to help reduce class size, which is why we are asking for a $5.7 million increase.

Maryland State Statute 4-205.K(2) requires that ‘The Superintendent shall seek in every way to secure the adequate funds from local authorities for the support and development of the public schools in the County’. I will continue to advocate for our schools and our students to the very best of my ability and I am asking for you to join me in this critical task. If you feel so inclined, I encourage you to reach out to the County Executive and members of County Council by writing a letter, sending an email, or by speaking during the public comment period during County Council meetings. As stated in my last newsletter, there is no more worthy cause than our children.Thank you for your support.

THE GUILD MORTGAGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK WILL CONTINUE NEXT WEEK WITH THE START OF THE 2023 SPRING SEASON

SPORTS WEEKLY 2023 ALL COUNTY WRESTLING TEAM

A freshman wrestler with a lot of wrestling experience and a very bright future. With a 40-10 record and wins against ranked wrestlers, Adan was an UCBAC finalist and placed 4th at 2A/1A Regionals.

A young man who is dedicated to the sport of wrestling. Always looking to improve his craft and make everyone on his team better. The attitude of working hard and listening to your coaches has had a trickle down affect on our team and has helped to create a winning atmosphere in our room. This junior captain finished the year at 49-0 and was the War on the Shore Champion. He also repeated as UCBAC, Regional and State Tournament Champion.

A natural thrower who put a lot of guys to their backs this year with a 45-8 record. This sophomore made a immediate impact for our team finishing the year as an UCBAC finalist, 3rd at regional and 5th at the 2A/1A state tournament.

Perryville’s Senior Captain returned to the State Tournament this year after a 3rd place podium finish at the 2A Regionals tournament. Kyler finished 2nd in the UCBAC Championships and was Cecil County’s top wrestler in the 126 weight class.

Mason was a crucial member of our program for this season. He was 34-9, with a top 3 placement at the UCBACs and a top 5 placement at the 1A-2A East Regionals. Mason is a sophomore Captain and consistently leads by example. He works hard each and every day and motivates those around him to succeed as well. He is the type of athlete that every coach would love to have in their program.

A well rounded freshman wrestler who had a knack for knocking off ranked senior wrestlers. Zach had a great year with a 45-7 record and a 4th place finish at the War on the Shore. He completed his season as UCBAC and Regional Champion and placed 6th at 2A/1A states.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Reagan ended the season with a 2818 record overall and a 16-4 record against girls. She recorded 23 Falls. She placed second at the Abingdon Friends Tournament, Gettysburg Girls Tournament, Phillips Andover Invitational (Mass), and 5th at the Husky Invitational. She ended the season by placing 4th at National Preps and will return next season as one to watch having already earned All-American status in just her first year. Reagan lives in North East, MD and this is her first year at West Nottingham.

Rising Sun Junior Tyler Garvin finished his season with a 49-0 record on his way to being the War on the Shore Champion, and repeating as the UCBAC Champion, Regional Champion and MPSSAA State Champion.

Over two years Tyler has compliled an undefeated record of 92-0 to become a two time state champion and was a Junior National Champion in the Summer of 2022.

When he isn’t wrestling on the mat he is sitting on the side of the mat yelling instructions and encouragement to his fellow teammates. He usually celebrates the wins of his teammates with more excitement than he celebrates his own wins.

Tyler is a leader on and off the mat for the Rising Sun Tigers. With over a decade of wrestling experience already under his belt Tyler has more more experience on the mat than any other wrestler in the County right now. He has the respect of his teammates, coaches, and even his opponents.

A Champion on and off the mat.

Rising Sun’s only Senior wrestler this season, Connor finished the year with a 28-17 record. This captain was a hard worker in the practice room, always working to improve. His year ended with a 3rd place finish at the UCBAC Tournament and 5th at 2A/1A Regionals.

Kiia ended the season with a 16-5 overall record and 12-4 against girls. She won all 16 of her matches by Fall. She placed first at Abingdon Friends and 3rd at the Husky Invitational. She ended the season placing 4th at the National Prep tournament becoming an All-American. She had done JUDO as a child, but never did organized wrestling before. Kiia lives in Finland and attends West Nottingham Academy.

Blaydon was a senior leader in our program. With a record of 21-15, with a top 4 finish at the UCBACs as well as being a regional qualifier. Blaydon was a 4-year member of the varsity program, as well as a captain. Blaydon came into the room each and every day with a positive attitude and ready to work. Blaydon’s success over the season was a huge contributing factor as to why we were successful as a team.

Kam was a captain in our program. He was 32-9 and placed 2nd at the UCBACs. Kam was a major reason why we were so successful this year as a team. He led the team with 23 pins, and was top 3 in takedowns. Kam was an outspoken leader in the program. He came in everyday to practice ready to work and improve. Kam was also a 4-year member of the varsity program. Kam’s contributions to our program cannot be understated.

Pharell finished the season with a 4th place finish in the UCBAC Championships advancing as one of two Bohemia Manor Wrestlers to advance to Regionals. At Regionals he earned a 6th place podium finish.

This Junior Captain proved that he is one of the best in the state this year. Following up last years 3rd place finish at states with 42-3 record this year and a 4th place finish at the War on the shore. He dominated guys on their feet and on top and repeated as UCBAC and Regional Champion. He finished his season 2nd in the state at a very competitive 182 lbs class.

One of the nicest young man you could meet and ask to have on your team. Then get him out on the mat and its lights out for his opponents. Elijah compiled a 46-6 record this year with an amazing 39 pins on his way to a 3rd place finish at War on the shore. This sophomore repeated as UCBAC and Regional Champion on his way to a 6th place finish at states.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Mikey’s record this season was 13-10 with a top 4 finish at the UCBACs and a top 6 finish at the 1A-2A East Regionals. Mikey broke his hand early in the season and battled back from adversity to podium at both events. Mikey had the drive and determination this season to battle back from a tough injury and help his teammates be successful. Mikey is a crucial member of this program and will look to build on his success next season.

Coach Garvin was a key factor in bringing us from a .500 team last year to one of the best teams in the state this year. He recognized the potential in each of us and did what he had to do to get us to meet that goal. We have some great wrestlers but having great coaches brought us to the next level. Coach Garvin’s energy made it fun to come into the practice room every day and get better. Every wrestler on our team improved from the beginning of the season to the end and that’s largely due to him.

After last season was cut short by injury, this sophomore wrestler was determined to help the team and make it to the post season, finishing with a 20-18 record. After a up and down season, Thomas finished with his best tournament performance at UCBAC’s, with a 2nd place finish and placed 6th at the 2A/1A regional tournament.

Season high game of 26 points twice. Jabez scored 20 pts or more in 11 games. He impacted the team with rebounds and assists too. Averaged over 8 rebounds per game and 5.1 Assists per game. Jabez had 6 double-doubles. He is one of the team’s best defensive players leading the team in steals at 2.56 per game.

NORTH EAST

Luke is one of the major leaders of this team. Season high game of 40 points vs Rising Sun. Luke scored 20 pts or more in 10 games. Great three-point shooter making 78 three’s on the year with a season high 9 threes vs RS. He can also get to the rim making 53 two-point field goals. Shoots well from the FT line shooting 77% on the season.

PERRYVILLE

Athletic guard that could shoot the 3, but excelled at creating steals and taking the ball to the whole due to his extremely quick first step, led the Panthers in scoring.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

As a Freshman Kabali was one of the team leaders, he is fast and elusive and could create his shot whenever needed. Kabali has a true jump shot and could pull up on a dime and hit the mid range shot. He will be a problem for teams in the years to come.

Was very good on both ends of the floor, getting a bucket or timely steal whenever needed. All the while making very few mistakes and always giving 100%. A consummate team player with a contagious positive attitude.

Jabez is one of the major leaders of this team. Season high game of 26 points twice, once against Bo Manor and the other against North Harford. Jabez scored 20pts or more in 11 games. He impacted the team with rebounds and assists too. Averaged over 8 rebounds per game and 5.1 Assists per game. Had a season high of 13 rebounds on 1/10/23 vs Elkton and a season high of 10 assists on 1/14/23 against RS. He can score at all 3 levels while getting teammates involved in the game. Jabez has faced many double teams and hedges during the year and has done well to score and keep his teammates involved. Jabez had 6 double-doubles. Jabez is one of the team’s best defensive players leading the team in steals at 2.56 per game. He was also a strong ball handler against the press.

BOHEMIA MANOR

A force to be reckoned with in the paint. Big Z, protected the basket and was a threat to block a shot any time someone stepped in the paint, he controlled the boards and he brought fans to their feet with some rim rocking jams on a consistent basis!

guard who was the floor general. Lightning quick, could shoot the 3 and get to the bucket at will. On the Defensive side was able to pick your pocket due to his cat-like reflexes.

The Junior guard showed an allaround game this year where he was second on our team in total points, second in rebounds, first in blocks and first in assists. This culminated with a 37 point outburst in the MIL Championship game. Jackson went over the 1,000 point mark in his career this year and has shown an ability to take over games when its needed.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Is a good shooter and is only going to get better. ......Again he will be a problem going forward. Landon had some huge games this year scoring 19 points against the North East Indians.

“My most valuable player...... does all the little things that make your team better...will be sorely missed and his stats don’t tell the whole story”

I think Coach Kidd should be coach of the year because of his passion for the game and his players. Since playing back in elementary and middle school in the YMCA league, up to now in high school, Coach Kidd has always encouraged us to work hard and push ourselves. He wants all his players to be the best they can be, even outside of basketball. I like that he keeps the game fun as well and can be real with his players. We all enjoyed being at practice everyday. I think the combination of Coach Kidds ability to push players to be better and work harder, while building a relationship with them as a friend, not just a coach, makes him the best choice for coach of the year.

LYNCH

Jordan was the county’s most-dominate player on this year’s most-dominate team. Jordan had an enormous impact on Rising Sun’s success. Led the team in double-doubles and is in the top three leaders in each of the stat categories listed above. Her speed helped ignite much of our success and fueled our defensive and offensive play. She is a pleasure to have as a part of our program--not just because of her skill. She is a tremendous young woman.

ALLISON STOUDT

Was a top-three stat leader in 3/4 of the main statistical categories. She has high basketball I.Q. and unselfish play that helped the rest of our team succeed. Has great court vision, which sparked much of the great passing our team was known for.

Consistently one of our top three scorers. Has the ability to get hot from behind the arc, which created defensive problems for our opponents. Was our three-point threat, which caused other teams to focus on her.

Was a top-three stat leader in 3/4 of the main statistical categories. Laynee gave us so much more statistically than can be found in the scorebook. Her contributions in assists, steals, and rebounds was vital to our success.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Saylor is a leader on the court and played multiple positions for us on any given night. She led our team in scoring while also creating scoring opportunities for teammates due to her drawing of double teams from opponents. A threat to score from anywhere on the court and a clutch free-throw shooter. Excellent defender who helped pressure teams on the top of our 1-3-1 zone.

ALEIGHA GANGEMI

Aleigha was arguably the most tasked guard this season, carrying the load for the Elks. Not only was she the floor general but she had to be extremely ball dominant due to the lack of true guard skill around her. As a shooting guard and playing off the ball she was a dominant catch and shoot player. Averaging 12 pts 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals she was a force on both ends of the court.

TRI-STATE CHRISTIAN HOPE PFADT

Hope is one of our Sr Captains and is a true Leader on and off the court. Hope is always positively vocal and encourages all of her teammates. She is our leading rebounder and makes it incredibly tough for me to take her off the floor as she takes no plays off!

LANDEN CAIN

Landen was last season’s MIL MVP, and she picked up where she left off. Landen is one of the most athletic young ladies to ever play in the MIL. She is enrolled at the Naval Academy this fall, where she will play Lacrosse. She is a modest young lady, who always leads by example, on and off the court. Her ability to make everyone around her better, makes her a coach’s dream.

COACH OF THE YEAR

TRI-STATE CHRISTIAN JULES HARRIS

Jules is one of our Sr Captains and expects nothing but the best from herself and her teammates. She is constantly asking for constructiveness so that she may improve and be held accountable. Jules is our leading scorer and has a knack of being shifty to get her shot off. Jules is versatile and can play several positions. Another young lady that is incredibly tough to take off the floor!

Coach Stoudt was a very positive coach even through our toughest losses of the season. She encouraged us to get better everyday in any way that we could. Her passion for the game shows through her coaching. She always made us feel like she believed in us and believed that we could win any game. I am looking forward to my senior year with Coach Stoudt’s leadership where I think we will just as good if not better.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

MALANA REDDEN - ELKTON

ALIVIA CARRILLO - TOME SCHOOL

KATY HAMMER - NORTH EAST

Junior Cienna Lilly was our MVP this year. Lilly is one of our more polished players but this season she truly shined. Lilly dominated on offense and defense in order to bring her team more wins. We are proud of her leadership and positivity she brings to the team. Lilly is just as comfortable hitting a crucial three-pointer as driving to the net, Cienna led the Panthers with 14 points per game.

SPORTS WEEKLY 2023 ALL COUNTY BOYS INDOOR TRACK TEAM

Rocky has been a superb allaround point scorer in multiple events throughout the season. He finished the season with the fastest time in the country in the 55m (6.63) and highest vault (11’).

Senior Isaiah Huffstutler was the fastest runner in Cecil County this winter season on the 55m sprints. In both Cecil County Tower Hill Meets Issaiah placed 1st. At the 1A Central Region Championships he placed 2nd and finished 9th in Maryland at the State Indoor Championships. Isaiah also ran the 4x200 relay for Elkton where his team finished 2nd in both Cecil County Meets, 4th at the Regional Championships and 11th at the State Indoor Championships.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Junior Daniel Katz tried several events this year from the 55 Meter Dash to the 4x400 Relay but where he really shined the most was in the distance events. Daniel placed 1st in the 800 Meters Race during the Cecil County Tower Hill #2 Meet setting a new PR in the process. She set a new PR at the 2A East Regional Championships in the 1600 Meters race where he finished in 6th place. At 3200 Meters, Daniel set a new PR with his 8th place finish at the Regional Championships.

John Ferry is our senior, who only recently started distance running. John not only has lit the track on fire, but he has come out of his shell on the team and has turned into a great leader. His positive attitude and easy smile make him a great teammate. John is always willing to run multiple events to score points for our team. He genuinely puts his team’s needs above his own, and is an ideal athlete. John plans to run for Goldey Beacom (D2) after graduation from high school.

Ethan never finished outside the top 6 in any event he was in this winter season. In the 1600m he finished 2nd at the Cecil County Tower Hill #2 Meet. In the 3200m he finished 2nd in the Cecil County Tower Hill #1 Meet followed by at 1st place finish in the 1A Region Championships. At the State Championships, Ethan finished 6th overall. As a member of the Bo Manor Realy Team, Ethan’s team finished 2nd in the 4x800 relay at both Cecil County Tower Hill Meets.

FRESHMAN TO WATCH

Sydney is the epitome of what every coach would love to have as a member of a team. Although he is very mild-tempered, he’s very competitive (more so with himself). Throughout the season, his goal was to break the school record in the shot put. Not only did Sydney do that by over 2’, he won the state title in 44’6.5”! He earned the title of state champion because of the work he has put in and how he trusted what his coach, Russell Bowman, planned for him. The best part is, he broke Coach Bowman’s school record!

COACH OF THE YEAR

Coach Morgan or as we call him on the team Traemo, is an amazing coach. He always pushes us to be the best that we can be, maybe some times going a little crazy with our workouts but it’s all ways to make us better. He is an amazing coach on and off the field, always wanting to make us better people in general. I will always be grateful for him.

SPORTS WEEKLY 2023 ALL COUNTY GIRLS INDOOR TRACK TEAM

Senior MyAven Ewing participated in the 55m Dash, 300m, 4x200 Relay and 4x400 Relay. In the 55m Dash she set a new PR at the Cecil County Tower Hill #2 Meet winning the event. She placed 16th at the 2A East Region Championships finishing her race only fifthteen hundredths of a second off her PR. In the 300m event MyAven placed 3rd at the Catonsville Invitational and 4th at the Cecil County Tower Hill #2 Meet. She finished 15th at the Regional Championships with a new PR.

Freshman Sage North is fast.

In the 55 Meter Dash she placed 1st at the first Cecil County Tower Hill Meet and 2nd with a PR at the Cecil County Tower Hill #2 Meet. In the 300 Meters she finished 1st and 2nd again at the Cecil County Meets and had a new PR at the 2A East Region Championships. She was part of the 4x200 Relay Team that won the Cecil County Tower Hill #1 Meet and placed sixth at the Regional Championships.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Leanna continued her successes from Cross Country and found her racing spirit this winter. She leaves everything on the track, earning TWO school records and contributing to a third this season. Her competitive nature is going to continue to push her forward in the seasons to come.

North East Senior Brin Khanjar has owned the High Jump for the past two seasons that we have been watching her. Her freshman year she was jumping 4’7 and this year her season record was 5’2.

This year Brin finished 2nd at the 2A East Region Championships and 15th at the State Indoor Championships.

While also devoting many hours each day to practice Brin maintained a 4.0 grade point average this winter putting her on the MPSSAA Minds in Motion Award List.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Coach Raissa Moore is a Coach that every Parent should want working with their athlete. She knows how to motivate and inspire them to push their limits and reach goals.

At a recent Track Meet, we witnessed an athlete from another school thank Coach Moore for some advice but then said she was “done” and “quitting”. Coach Moore pulled the student off to the side and talked to her. When that student felt like everyone else didn’t care and she couldn’t go on, a Coach from Cecil County stopped and tried to get her back in the game and not give up. When others might have said “Not my kid, not my problem”, Coach Moore made a difference and didn’t let that student just walk away. She also puts that dedication into each of her own athletes who she trains with daily.

Coach Moore and Coach Morgan coached their Perryville athletes to breaking multiple school records at the State Tournament this year.

Senior Kathryn Scott placed 1st in the 1600m event at both Cecil County Tower HIll Meets. She is the 1A Central Region Champion for the 1600m and placed 5th at the MPSSAA 1A State Indoor Championships where she finished only fifthteen hundredths of second from breaking her PR. Kathryn also competed as part of Bohemia Manor’s Relay Team competing in the 4x400 and 4x800. Her Relay Team placed 1st at the 1A Central Region Championships and 5th place at the State Championships

HURDLES KATIE CALLAGHAN RISING SUN

Katie Callaghan is a sophomore with a huge running career ahead of her. Katie is an amazing athlete who finds success at any event in which she participates. Katie has a great work ethic and positive attitude. She is encouraging to all of her teammates as well as her competition. Katie is also always the first to help clean up at meets, help carry equipment that isn’t even hers, and generally help anyone and everyone. Outside of running, Katie is a great student who is doing many positive things for our school and community.

Brin has been the soul of our Indoor team this year. She is supportive and encouraging of everyone and can be counted on to life her teammates’ spirits. Brin had several goals this season and worked tirelessly to find her success. We loved seeing her huge smile at clearing 5-2 again this year. We are so proud of everything she has done over her indoor career and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.

Caroline Mercer is hands down one of our most well-rounded athletes. She is a sprinter, a hurdler, a thrower, a jumper - she can do it all. While Caroline didn’t start the season loving shot put, she dedicated her time and energy to learn the technique, put in the hard work, and she finished 3rd in the state! We are very optimistic that this Spring season is going to be Caroline’s season to shine! Being a junior, we are really looking forward to watching her career bloom!

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* What’s in a gut bacterium? Possibly more than you might expect: Studies have shown that the types and amounts of such bacteria might influence your appetite, your food preferences and even the way nutrients are processed and stored in your body.

* While fish can cough, they don’t sneeze.

Senior Alyssa Snyder placed 3rd at the 2A East Region Championships in Pole Vault with a height of 7’ 0”. Alyssa improved on her height at the MPSSAA 2A State Indoor Championships where she jumped 7’ 6” and set a new PR . Alyssa is forever the optimist and a senior leader on the team this year. She is the biggest cheerleader for her teammates and willing to do anything to help the team. Coming off a successful indoor season, the spring is going to be Alyssa’s time to shine.

* Michael Jordan was nicknamed “Magic” in high school after Los Angeles Lakers icon Magic Johnson.

* In June 2022, the New York Public Library donated half a million books to kids under 18 so they could start their own personal book collections. Collecting and reading books has been found beneficial to learning, stress relief and even future success.

* And speaking of libraries, they’re not always just for books: The Buffalo Tool Library in Buffalo, New York, allows members to take out tools for home improvement, gardening and repair projects.

* Provincial law in Quebec prohibits a woman from taking her husband’s surname after marriage.

* Actor Morgan Freeman, after serving in the U.S. Air Force, got his first paid job in show business as a dancer at the 1964 World’s Fair.

* After having a double mastectomy in her senior years, the ever-outspoken Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth, eldest child of President Theodore Roosevelt, took to referring to herself as “Washington’s only topless octogenarian.”

* Dolbear’s Law, which states the connection between air temperature and the rate at which crickets chirp, is accurate to within about one degree Fahrenheit for the field cricket.

* The Chinese video sharing and streaming site Bilibili used 1,500 drones to create a light show celebrating the first anniversary of the release of mobile game Princess Connect! Re:Dive, which was followed by a huge QR code to download the game.

Anna Callaghan is a senior who decided this year to NOT be afraid to succeed! She is a fierce first leg of any relay we put her in and gives it 100% of fitness and effort. Anna is great at sharing ideas to help build team camaraderie and is a huge asset to our team not only with her athletic talent, but with her positive perspective and encouragement. Anna certainly has a bright future both on and off the track.

Emily Wishart started track as a quiet student, but aggressive athlete. She has bloomed into an amazing human who is fierce on the track, and a natural leader on the team. She leads our hurdle drills flawlessly, and is respected by her peers and teammates. Emily has committed to Frostburg cross country and track & field and will be taking on the new venture of steeplechase in college. We are all very excited to see what her future holds!

Savannah Lacey only recently started distance running, too, and has bloomed into quite the competitor! While she had some fitness setbacks (as all athletes eventually deal with - it’s just really hard while dealing with them), she came back to end the season strong. Savannah is the first to lead stretches after practice, help new athletes find their way at large meets, and be an encourager to everyone (even her opponents). After high school, Savannah has committed to running for Stevenson University.

Mandy Callaghan has been our fearless leader from the start! Mandy always gives 100% effort and balances a very heavy school workload with the demands of a successful 3 season athlete. Mandy finds success in every event that she tries. Our biggest challenge is reining her in to focus on only 4 events!

(That’s a good problem to have!). While Mandy certainly has a fantastic running career ahead of her, we are equally looking forward to seeing her positive contributions to our world!

Sydney Phillips wins first State Championship, has eyes on another this Spring in Outdoor Track

On February 21st, Perryville

Senior Sydney Phillips threw 44 feet and six and a half inches in the 12 lb. shot put, winning him the 1A State Title. He broke his past personal record by over three feet. Amazingly, although prior to the event he was seeded to finish fifth, he defied the odds and took home the gold medal.

The Sports Blog had the opportunity to interview Sydney Phillips on his recent victory. Phillips was thrilled and surprised about winning the state title, since before the event he “wasn’t expecting much.” He said “I told my friends at lunch… ‘Don’t expect me to become a State Champion.’” However, when preparing for the event, he still envisioned winning, prayed, and “it happened.”

Phillips initially became involved in track thanks to being taught by Coach Morgan since sixth grade. Phillips wanted to become a better football player. Phillips believes that track is the best offseason sport for those who want to excel in another sport.

Phillips initially was a sprinter but was “thrown into throwing” since his team needed more throwers. “Trae Mo knows best” he said. Once he started throwing, he stuck with it. Under the guidance of Coach Russel, the team’s indoor shot put coach, he lifted over the summer and improved his form every practice. Phillips says that he’s lucky to be coached by Coach Russel, and that Coach Russel is the reason he is a State Champion. He calls Russel “The perfect coach in Maryland.”

Phillips has big goals for the outdoor season. He strives to become the 1A Outdoor State Champion and wants to throw over 50 feet to break Darryl Johnson’s record. He’s looking forward to possibly running more relays; the 4x400 is his favorite event since he likes computing as a team, and the hype that the event gets at the end of the meet. “There’s no event like it” Phillips explains.

When he’s not dominating in the shot put circle, Sydney Phillips likes to listen to music, especially classical piano music before his meets. He sings in chamber choir, lifts, and reads in his free time. After graduation this June, he’ll continue his education at Frostburg State University, majoring in computer science and playing for the football team.

Phillips’ favorite aspect about track and field is the friends he’s gained. He also greatly appreciates the amazing coaches he’s worked with, and says that they have made him a better person and better athlete. His advice for anyone thinking about joining track or participating in track is to remember the rule of thirds. “Not every day will be good… some days will be good, some will be okay, and some will be crappy.” He says that you don’t need to PR in practice, but slow down, focus on your form, and PR in meets.

Sydney Phillips would like to thank Yahuah, his coaches, his family, and his teammates for his victory. We look forward to reporting Sydney Phillips’ success in the upcoming outdoor season!

* On March 27, 1909, fingerprint evidence was used to solve a murder case for the first time. The world’s first official Fingerprint Bureau had already been created in Scotland Yard in 1901, while the first Fingerprint Bureau debuted in Calcutta, India, in 1897.

Based on the 1931 play “Green Grow the Lilacs” by Lynn Riggs, the beloved theatrical staple about a young farmgirl named Laurey and her two suitors continues to be produced across the country.

* On April 2, 1992, mob boss John Gotti, aka the “Teflon Don,” was finally convicted in New York of racketeering, murder, obstruction of justice, hijacking, illegal gambling, extortion, tax evasion and loan sharking, thanks largely to the testimony of a former high-ranking Mafia member. Gotti received a life sentence without the possibility of parole, and died in prison in 2002.

* On April 1, 1999, David Smith was arrested and charged with originating the “Melissa” email virus, which infected more than a million computers worldwide and caused more than $80 million in damage.

* On March 28, 2000, racial tensions showed no signs of abating in the African country of Zimbabwe as President Robert Mugabe pushed forward with his plan to remove Zimbabwean farms from white ownership. The latest death occurred when a white farmer was shot by squatters occupying his land.

How Physical Therapy Helps Athletes Recover from Sports Injuries

If you were injured playing sports, you must fully treat the injury before you can resume the activity. While rest, ice, and medication reduce painful symptoms, many athletes recover faster by combining non-invasive therapies, including physical therapy. Learn about common sports injuries a physical therapist treats and what to expect during a visit.

Knee injuries

American Family Physician reports that 25 percent of Americans experience knee pain. Knee injuries can cause swelling and inflammation, reduce mobility, and weaken the muscles surrounding the knee. When you see a physical therapist for knee pain, they'll first palpate the knee to diagnose the problem. Imaging typically isn't required unless the injury is severe. Treatment of knee pain includes rehabilitative, isometric exercises to strengthen the knee and restore a proper range of motion.

Shoulder injuries

Shoulder injuries have a significant impact on daily life: When your shoulder hurts, you may not be able to lift, carry, or drive without experiencing acute pain. A physical therapy clinic can treat common shoulder injuries including a dislocated shoulder, separated joint, rotator-cuff injury, and "frozen" shoulder. Treatment consists

of exercises for the rotator cuff and deltoid to stabilize and support the muscles surrounding the shoulder. Subsequent exercises treat the specific shoulder muscles affected in your injury with the goal of stabilizing the shoulder and reducing inflammation.

Wrist and arm injuries

Wrist injuries occur most often in sports where you make repetitive hand motions, including tennis, golf, and water polo. Joint strain and inflammation in the wrist can make it near impossible to write, drive, eat, and perform other activities of daily life. From carpal tunnel to tendonitis to acute tears, a physical therapist can stabilize the wrist joint, reduce inflammation, and prescribe exercises to restore the wrist's range of motion and weight-bearing abilities.

Back injuries

Sixty-five million Americans experience back pain, reports Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute. Athletes often injure the lower back due to overuse and repetitive motion in sports including tennis, golf, skiing, swimming, and running. Injuries in the upper part of the back or neck are likelier to occur in contact sports where players fall. Regardless of where the pain is located, treatment focuses on stretching and strengthening the back muscles. This pro-

gram returns the body to a state of wellness and may prevent injury reoccurrence. Back pain is often connected to weak core muscles, which cannot properly support the back. Your physical therapist may provide core instructions to strengthen a weak core. As you strengthen the core, pressure placed on the back muscles naturally decreases.

Ankle and lower-leg injuries

Ankle and lower-leg injuries occur most often in sports that involve a lot of running, such as cross country, track and field, or soccer. Examples of ankle and lower-leg injuries include cold pain, shin splints, muscle sprains and strains, Achilles tendon injuries, and stress fractures. Once the inflammation is reduced, your physical therapist will work on a program of isometric exercises and resistance bands to stretch and strengthen impacted

muscles.

If you were injured playing a sport you love, seek the right care. Medical attention helps when injuries are acute. Doctors will usually refer you to a physical therapy clinic when they believe it is the right next step. However, a doctor's referral isn't required to get physical therapy. If you experience frequent pain or stiffness from physical activity, consider scheduling a consult. There may be underlying muscle weakness or injury that can be treated with physical therapy.

Physical therapy is a treatment that requires your active participation. When you do the recommended stretches and exercises in between appointments, you take charge of your healing. This in turn helps you get back to your favorite sport sooner.
