NORTH EAST STARTS SEASON SWINGING WITH 13-2 WIN OVER HAVRE DE GRACE

NORTH EAST–North East head coach Kevin Brown instills into his team a hitting philosophy of just putting the ball into play, which ensures the best chance of creating runs.

The Indians successfully applied that tenet in the bottom of the fifth inning as 11 of 12 batters reached base en route to a nine-run explosion, and they secured the victory on Evan England’s towering two-run home run to earn a 13-2 five-inning victory over visiting Havre de Grace.

“The biggest thing is that they put the ball in play,” Brown said. “If you put the ball into play, good things happen. That’s exactly what happened.”

With North East leading 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Landon Knaub singled to start the frame and moved to sec-

ond when England reached on an error, and following a walk to load the bases and a strikeout, Ryan James doubled in Knaub and England to make it 6-2.

Luke Keefer scored a Mason Newton single, which was followed up by Matt Hopkins driving in James with a single to make it 8-2, and the Indians added two more runs when Hopkins and Keefer scored on error on a ball hit by Gavin Bolender. Bolender scored on Knaub's RBI fielder’s choice, and England invoked the 10run rule when he hammered a pitch into the bleachers of the neighboring football field to make it 13-2 to give North East a walk-off victory.

“I choked up. I wanted to put the ball into play. Hit the sweet spot, and good things happen. That’s all I can say,” England said of the game-winning home run. “It was one of the best. I didn’t know that it hit the bleachers until I heard them say ‘it hit the bleachers.’ It was a good way to end the game.”

By the end of the fifth, the Indians had scored nine runs on six hits, and England said North East just followed Brown’s directive of getting the bat on the ball in the frame.

“We knew he had to put the ball into play and had to make runs,” England said. “It’s a tough game against a good opponent. When you put the ball into play, good

things happen.”

The fifth inning home run was England’s second of the game, culminating a 3-4 day with four runs and three RBIs to lead the Indians’ offensive charge, and James went 2-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs.

With the win, North East starts the season with consecutive victories, giving the team momentum as it heads into divisional play later in the week.

“It is a good start. They’re basically non-division games, so it’s nice to have a lot of positive aspects,” Brown said. “Hopefully that carries into the beginning of division play when we meet North Harford on Friday.”

No. 7 Frederick Stops Seahawks

NORTH EAST, Md. - Ce-

cil baseball rounded out a 20-game homestand with its tougest test to date in national ranked Frederick, falling in both games to the No.7 Cougars by four runs.

The Seahawks drop to 9-13 overall and 1-3 in Region 20 Division II play after the two losses.

Game 1: Frederick 9, Cecil 5

A seven-run second doomed Cecil's chance early in the opener, as the Seahawks fell 9-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

Cecil looked strong in the first, as they defense turned a double play and a strikeout into a quick top half of the inning. A double from Pat O'Brien was followed by an RBI-single from Dylan Byler to push the Seahawks ahead by one. The Seahawks would not capitalize further on the inning, lining out and grounding into a double play of their own to end the inning.

The Cougars steamrolled Cecil in the second to the

tune of seven runs on six hits, three walks, and one error. The Seahawks turned to Kyle Stively out of the pen to bail them out, who would give up two unearned runs before the freshman retired the side.

Cecil received a blow in the bottom of the second, as Sael Flete was called out on appeal after missing first base while trotting around the bags for a home run. One run would score but Flete's was taken off the board. A groundout in the next at-bat cut the rally short. The Seahawks finally scored again in the fifth, recording its only two extra-base hits of the contest to pull within two of the Cougars. After holding off Frederick again in the sixth, Stively gave up a solo bomb to start the seventh. Another run scored on a dropped third strike before Jayden Meregildo nabbed the third out.

Not much noise was created by the Seahawks offense in the seventh, as a groundout snapped Cecil's

four-game winning streak.

Joel Blanco (1-3) was stuck with the loss on the hill.

Game 2: Frederick 7, Cecil 3

Doubles headlined the second game of the day, as Frederick produced a half-dozen of them in its win over Cecil.

The Cougars scored three runs in the first, two in the fourth and two in the last frame. Cecil got on the board in the fourth after a ball tipped by Frederick's pitcher evaded the defense while Garrett Worthington scored. Worthington stepped up again the seventh, doubling to centerfield for another run.

Nate Ewing's RBI-groundout prior to Worthington's two-bagger accounted for the Seahawks other run.

Vinnie Kershner (1-3) was saddled with defeat. The sophomore hurler surrendured five runs, walked five, and struck out five Cougars.

Tome jumped out to a quick lead. They controlled 9 of 14 draws in the first half.

Perryville grabbed 5 draw

controls and found the net to keep them in the game.

Tome led at the end of the first half with a score of 9-5. Perryville came into the second half with a game plan to overcome their struggles in the first half. Perryville was successful in the second half outscoring Tome 7-4.

But ultimately, Perryville fell short as time ran out. Tome secured the win with a final score of 13-12.

Scoring for Perryville was Sara Murrell (8), Tay-

lor Young (2), Macy Forrest (1), and Christina Frantz (1). Murrell also tallied 2 assists to help her team. Tome’s Cain, DiPietro, and Carrillo scored 6, 4, and 2 goals, respectively. Carrillo also added 2 assists to DiPietro to keep Tome on top throughout the game.

Perryville’s goalie, Samantha Peterson, had 8 saves. Tome’s Alexis Senn, had 6 saves for the game.

Cecil College inducts 86 into International Honor Society

Alpha Alpha Theta is a PTK Three Star Level organization

NORTH EAST, Md. – Cecil College was proud to honor some of the brightest minds in the region on Tuesday, February 28, when 86 students were inducted into the Alpha Alpha Theta (AAT) Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society. The ceremony and celebration were held at the Milburn Stone Theatre where the new inductees brought the total College membership to 361 students and 1,133 alumni. This year's event marks the 49th Anniversary of the AAT Chapter at Cecil College, started in 1974.

PTK is the International Honor Society which serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students while providing opportunities for individual growth and development through educational, leadership, and service programming. It is the largest honor society in American higher education. To qualify, students must have a 3.5 grade point average or higher and be recommended by faculty.

In addition to honoring these students, the College is proud that AAT Chapter members continue to work to maintain the Three Star Level status as part of PTK’s Five Star Chapter Plan. Under the leadership of student officers Matthew Enlow, President; Cecil’s PTK Vice President; Lillian Jackson, Recording Secretary and Advisors Cheryl Davis-Robinson, Director of Student Life, and Melissa Burke, Professor of Biology, the chapter continues to promote the building a strong, engaged chapter. Aberdeen Chapter of AFCEA establishes new Bioproduction scholarship at Cecil College

ABERDEEN, Md. - The Aberdeen Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) has demonstrated its commitment to higher education by establishing a new scholarship supporting STEM students.

AFCEA’s generous donation of $5,000 will provide financial assistance to students from Cecil County and Harford County who are enrolled in the Bioproduction program at Cecil College. This scholarship will be distributed through the Cecil College Foundation.

Scholarship recipients and college representatives will be invited to attend the AFCEA’s annual scholarship dinner in the spring at Water’s Edge Restaurant. AFCEA Aberdeen Chapter provides scholarship funding to students in Harford and Cecil

counties who obtain a higher education certificate or degree in a STEM-related curriculum.

AFCEA is a non-profit association serving the military, government, industry, and academia as a forum for advancing professional knowledge and relationships in communications, information technology, intelligence, and global security. To learn more about the AFCEA Aberdeen Chapter, visit www.afcea.org/aberdeen.

Bioproduction is the design, development, and production of small molecules instrumental in making various commercial products such as vaccines, antibodies, biotechnology and even yeasts that produce unique beers.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is an ever-growing demand

for skilled laboratory technicians in the field of bioproduction due to a resurgence of research facilities in the United States. This is especially true in the Philadelphia to Baltimore corridor.

To learn more about the Bioproduction degree at Cecil College, visit www.cecil. edu.

The annual deadline to apply for this and all other Foundation scholarships is April 30. To apply for this and other Cecil College scholarships, visit cecil.edu/scholarships. Cecil College student Ethan Kellum’s work published

NORTH EAST, Md. – A childhood dream became a reality for Ethan Kellum after publishing his first book with author Leasy James. Kellum, an art and design major at Cecil College, illustrated To Who You Will Be, a children’s book about a parent’s love letter to their child.

“One of my lifelong dreams has been to have my work published. I have always wanted to be a professional illustrator, and this book has been a dream come true for me,” said Kellum, a native of Elkton, Md.

James approached Kellum about illustrating the book, as she knew of his talents from when he was attending Tri-State Christian Academy. At the time she met Kellum, James was teaching middle school English. She is an Associate Professor of Composition and Rhetoric at Delaware State University.

“I was honored when Leasy asked me to collaborate on this book. She’s an amazing person, and there’s no one else I would have rather worked with for my first book,” said Kellum.

James developed the idea of writing a children’s book about a parent’s love letter to their child. Kellum’s illustrations were formulated through the interpretation of her writing. Her work consisted of writing prose that would coincide with a page Kellum would illustrate. The process involved a lot of editing, tweaking, and re-editing the illustrations and, in some cases, entirely scrapping what they had.

“The process of illustrating a book has taught me so much about the professional world and what it takes to get your name out there and forge a career path for yourself,” said Kellum, who is in the planning stages of

a second book with James.

In the meantime, Kellum is perfecting his style while pursuing an Associate of Arts in Art and Design at Cecil College. He plans to transfer to the University of Delaware for a bachelor’s degree in fine arts or graphic design.

“I would love to be able to do something with my art. I have always wanted to be a comic book artist; that’s definitely a life goal of mine. I think it would be pretty cool to do concept art for film, television, and maybe even video games,” said Kellum, who works part-time at Captain Blue Hen Comics in Newark, De. “I do theater which is very time-consuming, and I have a side hustle of being an independent artist, so I am always on the go.”

Kellum’s creativity was recently on display as a cast member of the “Sponge Bob

the Musical” stage performance at Milburn Stone Theatre, where he played the role of “Patchy, the Pirate.” Theatre has been a creative outlet for him since middle school, and he landed a role in the Spring per-

formance of Godspell at Milburn Stone Theatre.

“I try to stay active while attending Cecil College because I think staying connected with the community is important. I’ve been a part of so many cool experienc-

es, I’ve met so many people and made so many friendships and connections,” said Kellum. “Cecil is a tightknit community, yet it’s such a welcoming and supportive community.”

NOT an Simple Sponge

Rising Sun High School’s Drama Club performs SpongeBob The Musical

After only two months of rehearsals, The Rising Sun High School Drama Club performed The SpongeBob Musical this weekend with great success. The play is based on the Nickelodeon series by Stephen Hillenburg and contained original songs by big names such as Steven Tyler & Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John

Legend and many more.

Leading the four days of performances was Sophomore Malakai Thomas who was perfectly cast in the role as SpongeBob Squarepants. Thomas' lively performance on stage was fun and full of energy and kept audiences attention for the entire two hour performance. Thomas described SpongeBob a big inspiration for them throughout their childhood. "When it came

Own Your Future

time for auditions we had to indicate who we wanted to try out for and my first pick was SpongeBob." said Thomas. Thomas is relatively new to performing on stage and credits getting involved with the Drama Club to their friend Laney Jones who played the role of Pearl Krabs.

Another standout performance was that of Senior Keegan Perry who was a crowd favorite in the role

of Squidward Q. Tentacles. Perry has been a member of the Drama Club for four years participating in multiple productions with the theater program. The voices of Sophomore Laney Jones as Pearl Krabs and Senior Rhiannon Betts playing Sandy Cheeks. This was Betts first production with the Drama Club although she has been a vocalist with the Jazz Band & Contemporary band em-

semble throughout High School. Both delivered memorable songs in the program.

All of the cast and crew performed their role flawlessly. If there were any problems, as can happen in a live performance, the cast didn't let the audience see it.

The musical being about friendship, problem solving, self-acceptance, and other positive themes involved a very creative con-

flict that needed all of the above themes in order to be resolved. In the ending, SpongeBob and all of his friends in Bikini Bottom saved the night with the magic of bubbles and togetherness.

A brilliant job by the Rising Sun High School Drama Club.

ELKTON MAGIC

cian and mentalist, opened the show with an audience full of laughter. He heavily engaged the audience with his performance, and kept everyone interested.

Whether it was mathematical magic, or mind-freezing ice cream predictions, Adam Stone brought his best. He blew the crowd’s minds with his unmatchable mind reading talent, and made the audience feel like they themselves were a part

of the magic, by allowing them to participate in his performance. Despite what is usually seen during magic shows, where audience members shrink back in their seats hoping not to go on stage— this show was not like the others. People were itching to get on stage and to be a part of tricks, raising their hands at every opportunity.

Following a short intermission, Vince Wilson jumped straight into action. Bringing a more classic, mysterious

type of magic to the stage, Vince Wilson roped in the locality of Baltimore with tricks involving Edgar Allan Poe and his works. Reading tea leaves in tea cups and swallowing matches, Vince Wilson captured the audience with his unique tricks. Additionally, he had great participant involvement, creating what seemed like a miniature theater show with audience participants on stage. Both magical personas were great contributions to the ongoing growth of the

local arts. There are many upcoming shows just like this, including an Open Mic event April 18th at Showcase on Main, Meadow Perry the Bubble Magician April 21st at Mick’s Crab House, and performer RJ Owens is also coming to Mick’s Crab House May 12th. Come out to these shows and support the growing arts in our community.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race: The Art of Crockpot Glazed Pork

Some things are perfect just as they are and don’t require improvement. This is one of those things.

In these days of instant gratification, it isn’t popular to take the slow road. I love my instant pot, don’t get me wrong. But cooking a pork roast in the slow cooker or oven is better than using an instant pot because the slow and steady heat allows for even cooking and richer flavor.

If feeding a crowd or having leftovers are important to you, larger cuts of meat can also be cooked more evenly in an oven or slow cooker, which may not be possible in an instant pot. While an instant pot is convenient for quick cooking, an oven or slow cooker can result in a culinary masterpiece worthy of the wait.

The recipe I’m sharing today has been around forever. It’s melt-inyour-mouth juicy pork, enrobed in a sweet and tangy glaze. It’s all about the glaze. You could put this glaze on a flip-flop and I would eat it.

CROCK-POT BROWN SUGAR & BALSAMIC GLAZED PORK

Yield: 8 generous servings

Total time: 4 to 6 hours, plus glazing

time

4 - 5 pounds boneless pork sirloin

roast 2 teaspoons ground sage

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

4 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup water

For the glaze:

1 cup dark brown sugar

1/2 cup balsamic vinegar

1/4 cup soy sauce

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1/4 cup water

about half the glaze into a gravy boat and set aside. Brush about half of the remaining glaze onto the pork and set under broiler for 1 to 2 minutes, until bubbly and caramelized. Repeat 2 to 3 more times until desired coating is achieved. Shred or slice pork against the grain into individual portions. Serve with reserved glaze on the side.

FROM KING FEATURES WEEKLY SERVICE, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803 CUSTOMER SERVICE: 800-708-7311 EXT. 257 CELEBRITY EXTRA #12345_20230327

Season the pork roast on all sides with sage, salt and pepper. Place pork, fat cap side up, in the slow cooker and sprinkle the garlic evenly over the top. Carefully add water into the slow cooker so you don’t wash off the seasoning. Cook on high for 4 to 6 hours, or until the pork shreds easily with a fork. Carefully pull the roast from the slow cooker and place on an aluminumlined sheet pan, and let it rest.

FOR RELEASE MARCH 27, 2023

Oven directions: Preheat your oven to 350 F. Following the recipe and directions above, place the ingredients into a covered roasting pan or Dutch oven. Bake, covered, in the preheated oven for approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours, or until the pork shreds easily with a fork. Follow the directions for glazing the pork shown above.

It’s important to note that oven cooking times can vary, so be sure to keep an eye on the pork as it cooks to ensure that it doesn’t overcook or dry out.

And there you have it, slow and steady wins the race when it comes to making delicious, melt-in-yourmouth pork roast. Whether you choose to cook it in the oven or the slow cooker, this recipe for Crock-Pot Brown Sugar & Balsamic Glazed Pork is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. So take a break from instant gratification and give this recipe a try — your taste buds will thank you!

Q:I want to see the new film “Jesus Revolution,” but I don’t like going to movie theaters. Can I watch it at home on my TV?

— H.W.

A:“JesusRevolution” is the term Time magazine called an evangelical Christian revival that began on the West Coast in the 1960s and 1970s. The movie of the same name is based on that published article as well as on a real pastor, who is played by Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”) in the film. Jonathan Roumie co-stars in “Jesus Revolution” as Lonnie Frisbee, a charismatic street preacher who resembles Jesus. The actor started out doing guest roles in primetime shows like “Chicago Med” and “NCIS: Los Angeles,” but he seems to have found his calling of starring in faith-based projects in recent years. He’s played Jesus in three seasons of Angel Studios’ “The Chosen,” which can be streamed on Peacock.

At the time of this writing, “Jesus Revolution” is only available in theaters, where it’s been quite successful, generating more than $45 million. It will eventually be available for rent and/or purchase on the Vudu/Fandango streaming app (and perhaps someday a streaming platform like Prime Video and one of the network or cable channels). However, if you don’t want to take a chance on missing it, I’d venture out to your local theater soon. ***

ing service. Sutherland had another successful series after “24” called “Designated Survivor,” where he becomes president of the free world after everyone above him in rank is killed in a catastrophic attack. It aired for two seasons on ABC before airing the third season on Netflix. He also recently played President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Showtime original series “The First Lady.” Now, whether we’ll see him in a silly comedy anytime soon remains to be seen. ***

Slow-cooker pork is worth the wait.

While the roast is resting, make the glaze. In a small saucepan, mix the ingredients for the glaze: brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce and cornstarch mixed with the water. Heat over medium, stirring until mixture thickens, about 4 minutes.

Preheat your oven broiler. Pour

Q:What is Kiefer Sutherland’s new show about? It looks like he’s playing Jack Bauer again. — L.J.

A:Whileactor Kiefer Sutherland is best known for playing Jack Bauer on the hit Fox action series “24,” his new show “Rabbit Hole” is a completely different project and character for him altogether. It definitely caters to Kiefer’s fan base, though, but instead of playing a federal agent fighting terrorism, he’s a private espionage agent framed for murder. “Rabbit Hole” comes from the creative minds of Emmy-winning producers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (“This Is Us”), and the show co-stars Charles Dance (“The Crown”) and Rob Yang (“Succession”). The first season consists of only eight episodes, and the first two will premiere on March 26. It’s available exclusively on the Paramount+ stream-

Q:What happened to the period piece drama “Sanditon”? Wasn’t it on Netflix? I tried to find it, and it’s gone. — A.K.

A:“Sanditon” recently had its third and final season premiere on PBS. The series is set during England’s Regency era, in the early 1800s at a seaside resort called Sanditon. It’s based on the unfinished novel by Jane Austen and stars Rose Williams. Andrew Davies, the Emmy and BAFTA award-winning screenwriter who has adapted classics like “Pride & Prejudice” and “Sense & Sensibility,” has done a wonderful job carrying out Austen’s original vision. “Murder Mystery 2” (PG-13) —

Even though the first “Murder Mystery” doesn’t exactly hook you into the most satisfying whodunnit, it was still an amusing watch nonetheless and prompted Netflix to return with a sequel. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston reprise their roles as married couple Nick and Audrey Spitz, who are invited to the wedding of Maharajah Vikram — a suspect in the previous murder mystery that took place in the first film. But, at the wedding, the Maharajah gets kidnapped, so the Spitzes, as the most unqualified detectives, naturally see this as a prime opportunity to solve yet another case. Premieres March 31. (Netflix)

“The Estate” (R) — Macey (Toni Collette) and Savannah (Anna Farris) are owners of a sinking business. When they receive news from their mother that their wealthy Aunt Hilda has terminal cancer, the desperate sisters hatch a plan to visit Hilda and see if they can squeeze themselves into her will before she passes. Upon their arrival, Macey and Savannah realize that their two-faced cousin Beatrice (Rosemarie DeWitt) is already staying with Hilda; their other cousin, Richard (David Duchovny), arrives shortly after them. With all the family gathered around for the same reason, who will get to walk away with the money from Hilda’s estate? Kathleen Turner stars as none other than Aunt Hilda in this black comedy out now. (Hulu)

“Tetris” (R) — Who knew the

journey behind bringing the puzzle game Tetris to players across the world would be so tumultuous? Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”) stars as businessman Henk Rogers, who attempts to secure the rights of Tetris and get it packaged with the new Game Boy console. Henk must travel from the U.S. to the Soviet Union, during a time when tensions are still high between both countries, to meet with the Russian developer of Tetris. What should have been simple negotiations for a game turns into a dangerous, high-stake battle for all involved. Premieres March 31. (AppleTV+)
