LEANNA ROGERS BREAKS 41 YEAR OLD SCHOOL RECORD

UCBAC Championship took place on May 3rd and 4th last week, and there were many incredible performances by athletes. This was the first two-day meet for most teams. A total of 15 teams came to compete at Perryville High School in this prestigious event, where competition was heightened

and records were set. The Rising Sun Girls Team placed highest of all Cecil teams and won 2nd place (87 points), followed by North East Girls in 5th (54 points), Bo Manor in 7th (46 points), and Elkton in 10th (22 points). Perryville Boys earned 5th (54 points), followed by Elkton Boys in 7th (47 points), Rising Sun Boys in 8th (38 points),

North East Boys in 11th (29 points), and Bo Manor Boys in 12th (22.5 points).

Two athletes performed outstandingly at this meet, with Leanna Rogers and Caroline Mercer each taking home 3 UCBAC Champion titles. North East’s Leanna Rogers won 1st place in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m, even taking home a school record in the 3200m with a

time of 11:29.91. Rogers is currently a sophomore at North East High School. When asked about her performance, Rogers attributed much of her success to her supportive team. She said, “I am really proud of myself, my coaches, and all of my teammates for helping me get this far … My teammates and I push each other every day at practice to bring

out the best of each one of us”. Rogers has many goals for her running career but ultimately hopes to break school records in the 1600m and 800m and take home a medal from the MPSSAA 2A State Championships. Rogers also noted, “I would like to shout out how awesome my teammates have been throughout my high school career. I can

always hear them cheering for me to do my best while I run, not only me but all of our other athletes. Everyone retains a positive attitude no matter if it was a bad day or not. I have the best coaching staff ever on our team. Coach Sprout, Decker, and Purner all push me to be the best person and athlete I

LEANNA ROGERS

Leanna Rogers has earned back to back Athlete of the Week awards for her fantastic performance at the UCBAC Track Championships this past week.

Leanna won all three of the distance races setting PRs in the process. She also broke the North East High School Record for the 3200. The previous record was set in 1981.

Leanna’s Track Coach wasn’t even born yet when that record was set and Athletic Director Gary Brown was a freshman in College.

* On May 24, 1887, President Chester A. Arthur and New York Gov. Grover Cleveland opened the Brooklyn Bridge. At the time, it was considered engineering’s greatest achievement, with a span of 1,600 feet, which made it the longest suspension bridge in the world.

* On May 22, 1906, Wilbur and Orville Wright were granted a patent for their “flying machine.” Their first application was rejected, and the overall process took three years, after which they sold the patent to the newly formed Wright Company for a sweet $100,000, 40% of the company’s stock, and a royalty of 10% on all aircraft sold.

* On May 23, 1962, 12 doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston performed the first successful reattachment of a human limb -- the severed arm of 12-year-old Everett “Red” Knowles. After four years of recovery, he had regained complete mobility and use of it.

* On May 26, 1993, Major League Baseball’s Jose Canseco and the Texas Rangers were playing against the Cleveland Indians when the latter team’s infielder, Carlos Martinez, famously hit a fly ball that bounced off Canseco’s head. Mage Caps Magical Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE - Mage ran into the history books winning the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday, but the annual Run for the Roses was more than just a horse race. As the sesquicentennial running approaches next year, here is a look at the pageantry and scene at the race that draws roughly 150,000 fans each year.

Given the name thanks to his sire Good Magic, Mage cast a spell on the field. Bolting to the lead off the turn for home, he earned an upset victory at odds of 15-1 and got the Derby win his sire couldn’t get. With the heavy pre-race favorite scratching, the win for Mage sets up a potential rivalry with Forte in the Preakness on May 20th. The pair only finished a length apart in their last start in the Florida Derby.

Attendance was up, the Mint Julep’s were flowing, fancy hats were in abundance, and the crowds seemed generally ecstatic with near perfect weather for this year’s Derby. From 17 state representatives of the Miss America pageant to a bomb-sniffing dog with a horse toy as his jockey, the sights around the track were plentiful. From children from Airdrie Stud farm saying a prayer for King Russell before the race to trainer Gustavo Delgado exulting in his first Derby win, this year’s edition was memorable.

Perryville JV Girls Lacrosse finishes season with only two games

FALLSTON - Perryville High School’s JV Girls Lacrosse team traveled to Fallston High School on Wednesday to take on the Cougars in their home stadium. The final score of 16-2, favoring Fallston, was not at all an indication of the level of play that the Panthers demonstrated. This was the second and final game of the season for Perryville’s JV team due to the lack of junior varsity teams in Cecil County. Throughout the season, each JV player was pulled up to varsity for a few games to receive some playing time and learn positioning by being in real games. For only having played one game together as a team prior to this one, the Panthers held their own against a strong Fallston team. Perryville started the game off strong by scoring two goals.

and Nadelie Adams each scored a goal for the Panthers. The game was controlled by Fallston, but that didn’t stop Perryville from hustling to get ground balls and pressuring Fallston’s attack. Perryville’s defense was able to make accurate passes to their midfielders who could transition and bring the ball to the attack. The entire team’s effort and good sportsmanship from the Panthers is to be commended in this tough game.

Scoring for Fallston was Abby Howes (5), Violet Clough (3), Ella Litz (3), Alex Croucher (2), Ruby Reddel (1) and Delaney Whitlington (1).

Perryville’s goalies tried hard and didn’t give up. In the first half, goalie Audree Hamson had 13 saves and in the second half, goalie Aubree Neel had 4 saves. Fallston’s goalie had 2 saves.
