MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

* On June 6, 1683, the Ashmolean, the world’s first university museum, opens in Oxford, England. Today, the collection at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology ranges in time from the earliest implements of man, made about 500,000 years ago, to 20th century works of art. * On June 10, 1692, in Salem Village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Bridget Bishop, the first colonist to be tried in the Salem witch trials, is hanged after being found guilty of the practice of witchcraft. The witch trials, which resulted in the executions of 19 innocent women and men, ended in October. * On June 9, 1893, the interior of Ford’s Theatre collapses when a basement pier gives way, killing 23 people. The building -- where President Lincoln was assassinated -- housed hundreds of government clerks. * On June 7, 1942, the Battle of Midway -- one of the most decisive U.S. victories in its war against Japan -- comes to an end. The outnumbered U.S. Pacific Fleet destroyed four Japanese aircraft carriers with the loss of only one of its own, the Yorktown. * On June 8, 1968, James Earl Ray is arrested in London, England, and charged with the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In 1969, Ray pleaded guilty to King’s murder. Three days later, he attempted to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming he had been set up as a patsy in a larger conspiracy. * On June 11, 1979, film actor John Wayne, born Marion Morrison, dies at age 72. The “John Wayne” name was created when the director of “The Big Trail” didn’t think Marion was a good name for an actor playing a tough Western hero. * On June 12, 1982, a large crowd descends upon New York City’s Central Park, demanding nuclear disarmament. Estimates placed the number of attendees at over a million. (c) 2022 Hearst Communications, Inc. All Rights Reserved

INDIANS ROLL OVER SPARROWS POINT ON WAY TO STATE SEMIFINALS

NORTH EAST - Friday's game against Sparrows Point was a nailbiter for the Indians faithful in attendance. The Indians fell behind early in the first inning when Sparrows Point jumped out to a 2 run lead off a Ryan Zickefoose homerun that scored two runs. It would take the Indians until the 3rd inning to catch up and tie the score 2-2 going into the fourth inning. After two scoreless innings the North East bats would come alive in the sixth in grand fashion. Following a 10 run 6th inning for the INdians the game was called and the Indians got the 12-2 win. The game was tied at two with the Indians batting in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan James hit a homerun on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs. Jacob Whiteman was the winning pitcher for the Indians. The right hander allowed five hits and two runs over six innings, striking

out eight. Logan Deene took the loss for Sparrows Point allowing two hits and two runs walking zero. Mike Gamble started the game for Sparrows Point. Gamble surrendered two runs on two hits over five innings, striking out six. Mark Shelley led Sparrows Point with two hits in three at bats. North East totaled ten hits. Evan England, Whiteman, and James each collected multiple hits for North East. England went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Indians in hits. North East was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. The Indians now advance to the Semifinals on Tuesday May 24 when they travel to Waldorf, MD and play for a chance to get in the State Championship Game. FLASHBACK By M ick Har per

1. What artist released albums titled “Texas Flood” and “Couldn’t Stand the Weather”? 2. Why did the Moody Blues originally call themselves “The M Bs” and “The M B Five”? 3. Which Laura Branigan song was used in the film “Flashdance,” but wasn’t included on the soundtrack album? 4. What artist had a hit with “Total Eclipse of the Heart”? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “There ain’t nothin in the world like a big-eyed girl, To make me act so funny, Make me spend my money.” Answers 1. Stevie Ray Vaughan, in 1983 and 1984. When Vaughan died in a helicopter crash in 1990, he left behind a wealth of material. Since then, a number of tribute specials and posthumous albums have been released, some of them charting globally. 2. They were hoping for an endorsement from the Mitchells & Butlers Brewery. It didn’t happen. 3. “Gloria.” The other one, “Imagination,” was used. “Gloria” nabbed a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal in 1982. 4. Bonnie Tyler, in 1983. 5. “Chantilly Lace,” by the Big Bopper in 1958. Jerry Lee Lewis followed with a cover in 1972. Over the years, numerous other artists have either released covers or samples in their own songs.

EARLY VOTING STEALS SHOW AT PREAKNESS

BALTIMORE - On a day with a real-feel heat index that toped 100 degrees, fans still packed the stands and infield for the 147th running of the Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in the Park Heights neighborhood in northwest Baltimore. The feel-good sto-

ries for the week were that of Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas going for his seventh Preakness win with the filly Secret Oath and Steve Asmussen looking for his first win since his filly Rachel Alexandra won in 2009. Instead, owner and Baltimore-native Seth Klarman

won his second Preakness at the track minutes from where he was raised. Early Voting skipped the Kentucky Derby, with trainer Chad Brown looking to repeat the path Cloud Computing took to win the 2017 Preakness. After a masterful ride by Jose Ortiz, the three

year-old son of Gun Runner powered into the lead on the turn for home and coasted to victory. It was Ortiz’s first Preakness win. The team from Cecil

County Sports Weekly contributing photographer Scott Serio’s Eclipse Sportswire was there with their cameras to tell the story. Take a look at the images from the team.

TRACK : 2A REGIONALS AT NORTH EAST HIGH SCHOOL

PHOTOS BY SAM DIXON

Tuesday, May 24, 2022

NORTH EAST HOSTS 2A TRACK & FIELD REGIONALS

Written by Amanda Callaghan and Katie Callaghan

NORTH EAST - This week held the MPSSAA 2A Regional Championships. It was the second two-day meet of the season, and the most important yet. It was the only chance to qualify for states and there was tension in the air. Only 16 participants would qualify per event for the whole state. Out of 4 regions, (North, East, South, and West), the top two athletes in each region will automatically qualify. After the top 2 from every region, the next 8 times in the state will qualify. This means that many people in third and fourth places may qualify based on their time, however, it is not guaranteed. The first day of the meet was on Thursday, May 19th, and the second day was on Saturday, May 21st. It was around 80 degrees on Thursday, providing a nice

moderate temperature compared to the high of 93 degrees on Saturday. Throughout the heat, many athletes still broke personal records (PRs) and performed outstandingly. This meet included all twelve schools in the MPSSAA 2A East Region. These schools included Elkton, North East, and Rising Sun from Cecil County, but also included Easton, Fallston, Harford Tech, Kent Island, North Caroline, Noth Harford, Parkside, Queen Annes County, and Wicomico from outside of Cecil. All Cecil teams performed exceptionally well in this meet and represented their schools with pride. On the boys' side of the meet, North East earned sixth place in the region with 46 points. Elkton followed them in ninth with 35 points, and Rising Sun finished 11th with 27.5 points. On the girls' side of the meet, Rising Sun finished second with a whop-

ping 113 points! North East finished sixth with 39 points, and Elkton finished ninth with 35 points. Standout boys' performances included Elkton’s Chase Bean earning fourth in the 100. Corey O’Connell of North East earned fifth in the 200 and third in the 400. Daniel Katz of North East earned fourth in the 3200. Carl Williams-Cohen of Rising Sun finished third in the 110m hurdles. Elkton’s Jayden Nichols won second in the Shot Put. North East’s James Paylor finished third in Discus, followed by Elkton’s Jayden Nichols in fourth, and teammate Patrick Smith in fifth. Jake Edwards of Rising Sun finished fifth in the high jump. Elkton’s 4x100 team of Chase Bean, Torien Newton, Allen Tate, and Douglas McGonigle won third. North East’s 4x400 of Manny Rose, Daniel Katz, Aiden McCullough, and Corey O’ Connell won third. Standout girls' per-

formances included Sage North finishing fifth in the 200. Katie Callaghan of Rising Sun won the 400 with a PR of 1:01.16. She was followed by sister Amanda Callaghan in third, and teammate Alyssa McCall in fourth. Amanda Callaghan of Rising Sun won the 800 with a PR of 2:25.02, followed by teammate Katelyn Lacey in fourth and sister Anna Callaghan in fifth. PANTHERS ARE REGIONAL CHAMPIONS

The Perryville Panthers hosted the Regional Girls Lacrosse Final on Tuesday May 17 vs the Rising Sun Tigers. The Perryville Defense knew coming in that they needed to control the 3 key players of Allie Piccalo, Emily Stuart and Ava Stephens on the Rising Sun squad. Perryville Defenders Emily Baker, Melina Christafano, Emma Emory and Abbie Collins kept a tight defense. They controlled the cutting and quick shots. Goalie Samantha Peterson stopped them 6 times. Mid fielders Taylor Young, Kameryn Marcinkevich and Ella Schwacke transitioned them to the attack end.

This was the key in keeping Perryville’s attack in control of the ball. Krizzia Belgira-Blackburn, Brooke Murrell, Macy Forrest and Sarah Murrell all tallied goals for the Panthers. Perryville worked hard in the season to slow the pace of game. Which helped keep a fresh defense on the field. This game was a group effort, every player had a hand in this win. Rising Sun played just as good, it wasn’t easy, it was a fight. Our seniors lead the team, to achieved their goal. To win the Region, and head to the quarter finals.

“The team worked together and played their best in order to win the game and hold the title as regional champs. Each and every single player gave it their all and deserved to have a season end on such a positive note. I’m very thankful for all my teammates and how for we made it together.”

Senior Captain Brie Briddle

BOONSBORO - The Perryville Lady Panthers traveled to Boonsboro, MD for the Girls Lacrosse Quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 17. This was Perryville’s first time in a State quarterfinal. The game started out with a couple back and forth transitions. Boonsboro scored first but Perryville stayed within 3 at halftime and still in the game.

Boonsboro pulled off the 1st 4 draws direct, fast breaks to the goal, giving them a 7 goal lead. Perryville added 3 more goals, but couldn’t get the momentum or time on the clock to recover. Perryville’s Sarah Murrell scored 5 times. Brooke Murrell had 1 goal. Perryville’s Goalie Samantha Peterson had 13 saves on the day. Boonsboro scorers, with 1 goal each were Wilt, Stouffer, and Stine. 2 goals each by Davis, Meiklejohn. 3 goals by Selby, and 5 goals by Malasky.

They deserve it!” Dunman added.

“Making it to the state quarterfinal was a group effort that would not have been possible without the hard work of every single member on this team. Every player improved and contributed to us making it as far as we did.” - Captain Brooke Murrell

“It was a tough loss for our quarter final game, Perryville girls lacrosse has never went this far before. And for us as Seniors,to experience winning the Regional Championship for the first time is one of the best memories in high school, I’ll ever get to experience. This is a good, dedicated, talented, smart group of girls. I am thankful to be able to play 4yrs. with them. Thank you to our coaches. Coach Mary Dunman for always pushing us to be better. Coach Lindsey Scott always helping us out. I also want to thank Coach Emma Beynon and Coach Katie Brown for joining us this year too!
