UCBAC CHAMPIONSHIPS BRINGS CONFERENCE BEST TO PERRYVILLE HIGH

By: Amanda Callaghan

The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference (UCBAC) Championship meet was held at Perryville High School on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27th and 28th. It was the first two-day meet for Cecil teams and contained all of the high schools from Cecil

and Harford County, including Aberdeen, Bel Air, Bo Manor, C. Milton Wright, Edgewood, Elkton, Fallston, Harford Tech, Havre De Grace, Joppatowne, North East, North Harford, Patterson Mill, Perryville, and Rising Sun. All 15 teams gathered at Perryville’s track. After UCBAC championships

were canceled for two years, all runners were eager to get the opportunity to compete together again. The stands and sidelines were filled with teams and fans. With the track events split over the course of the two days, the meet was a new experience for many of the athletes. - CONTINUED ON PG 18 -

The Perryville Panthers Softball Team moved their annual Senior Night to Trego Field in Perryville this year to play under the lights on a field most of the players have grown up on playing together. It was a festive night with balloons, flowers and Senior Banners hung from the fences with a large crowd in attendance of Perryville and North East Parents. The Lady Panthers couldn’t keep up with North East and fell 7-0 on Thursday. One bright spot for Perryville Panthers Varsity was a single by Brooklyn Lo-

gan in the third inning. Senior Alesia Doctor was the winning pitcher for North East. The fireballer allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out 13. Senior Brooklyn Logan took the loss for Perryville. The righthander lasted six and a third innings, allowing six hits and seven runs while striking out six. Riley Jackson, Lo- CONTINUED ON PG 8 -

GIRLS SOCCER : PIPELINE

Pipeline ‘07 Girls gunning for Regionals

Per Head Coach Barbara Ann McGrain ‘There are no easy matches in the Regional League; these ladies compete every single minute of every single match.’ After a sluggish start to their ECRL season, the 2007 girls have won 4 of their last 5 games, improving their record to an even 5-5. The girls celebrated two huge wins coming this past week. The first was an on the road 2-0 shutout of interstate rival Maryland United FC. Having dropped a game to this squad earlier in the season, Pipeline came out strong with unanswered goals from Ellie Hughes and Audrey DiPietro. The second victory, Pipeline hosted FC Delco at home, and

found themselves down 2-1 at the half. Coach McGrain rallied the troops at half, and the team fought from behind to stomp Delco 6-2. Captain Mia Honig led the way with a hat trick, Abby Bolz contributed two goals and Ellie Hughes found the back of the net once again. The ’07 squad has been plagued by injuries over the past month, but look forward to having the full squad ready as they travel north to face Match Fit Academy and PDA in a weekend doubleheader. The team is pushing to qualify for the regional championships this summer. The 2007 girls are coached by Barbara Ann McGrain and Morgan Kasemen. Pipeline SC was founded

in 2011, and is home to 35 girls teams and 35 boys teams from U8 to U19, and competes in the ECNL National and Regional Leagues. The 2007 ECRL team includes eight Cecil County players: Abriana Bolz (Rising Sun), Hailey Celeste (Rising Sun), Audrey DiPietro (Tome), Victoria Heath (Rising Sun), Sarah Holmes (Bo Manor, Captain), Madelyn Krasman (North East), Mackenzie Lynch (Perryville) and Ashleigh Peace (North East). Seven of these ladies found their start with Cecil Soccer Club, and were coached by Todd Krasman and Andy Mitchell.

SENIOR NIGHT FOR PERRYVILLE BASEBALL:

PANTHERS SCORE 10 RUNS IN SIXTH INNING TO SECURE THE SENIOR NIGHT WIN OVER HAVRE DE GRACE 19-11

By Kevin Phillips

PERRYVILLE–Despite scoring seven runs in the second inning, Perryville found itself trailing visiting Havre de Grace by two runs entering the bottom of the sixth inning in an UCBAC baseball contest Friday afternoon. The Panthers’ offense put up a crooked number in an inning for the second time as they exploded for 10 runs in the sixth to rally past and outslug the Warriors 19-11 on Senior Night. “The main message that our coaches told us was to keep our composure. It’s a seven-inning game,” Perryville’s Daniel Tserkis said. “You have to play all seven. Baseball is the only game that comes down to the last pitch. You can’t run the clock out like basketball and football. In baseball, you have to play until the last pitch is thrown. It was late, and it wasn’t how we wanted to do it, but we ended up doing it and got the job done. Offensively, we were on fire.” The Panthers trailed Havre de Grace 11-9 entering the decisive frame, and the first 10 batters scored to turn a two-run deficit into a 19-11 lead. After Pierce Sponaugle scored on a Tserkis double to make it a one-run game, Mason Salisbury tied it at 11-11 when drove in Tserkis with an infield single, and Salisbury gave Perryville the lead when he scored on a James Able single to left. “I just wanted to get it in play and get a run in,“ Able. who went 4-4 with three runs, said of his approach to the decisive at-bat. “I didn’t expect another run to come in. I saw a defender shift over to second. I put it in the gap.” Following Able’s go-ahead single, Ethan

Neff scored on an error to make it 13-11, and Jonthan Lepore plated a pair with a bloop double to right to add to the Panthers’ lead. Lepore scored on an error to make it 16-11, which was followed by Sponaugle driving in Perryville’s eighth run of the frame with a single. Tserkis capped the 10-run explosion with a tworun single to right to make it 19-11, and he said he took his own advice to heart for his final at-bat of the game. “My dad always told me to look for a first-pitch fastball. It was my quote for Senior Night, ‘swing at a first-pitch fastball,’ and that’s what I got.” said Tserkis, who went 3-5 with two runs and 3 RBIs. “I put it in the gap. I try to tell people that a firstpitch fastball is the best pitch you’re going to get.” Salisbury retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory for the Panthers. After Havre de Grace and Perryville scored one run each in the first inning, the Panthers took apparent control of the game in the second inning with seven

runs to take an 8-1 lead, but the Warriors bounced back with nine runs in the top of the fourth to take a 10-8 lead. Perryville scored once in the bottom of the fourth, but Havre de Grace responded with a run of its own in the fifth to make it 119. The teams combined for 30 runs in the game, and Panthers head coach Ricky Davis feels like a combination of the blustery conditions and a disciplined hitt approach enabled the offensive outburst. “Obviously, some of it is the wind. Some of it’s the conditions. The field is hard. We haven’t had a lot of rain over the last few days,” Davis said. “Kudos to both teams. They hit the ball. We keep telling the guys, ‘put the ball in play. There’s a chance.’ We’ve been constantly telling them in practice, ‘two strike approach, two strike approach. Make contact with the ball. Swing. I feel like the guys did that today.” Salisbury and Zach Ayers each scored three runs to help Perryville.

Cecil College’s Gates signs letter of intent to play for Slippery Rock University

NORTH EAST, Md. – Following two exceptional seasons with the Cecil College men’s basketball program, Khalid Gates will continue his collegiate athletic career at Slippery Rock University. On Thursday, gates signed his letter of intent to play for The Rock next season, surrounded by family, friends, and coaching staff. “I am really looking forward to being a member of the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team and pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Sports Management. The coaching staff at Slippery Rock made me feel comfortable and the campus had the feeling of going to Cecil College again,” said Gates, who was offered a scholarship from Slippery Rock University. “Slippery Rock had the degree program I wanted, and receiving this scholarship will allow me to concentrate on my academics and not be stressedout about accumulating stu-

dent loan debt.” Gates was the catalyst behind the Cecil College men’s basketball team, which qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament for the second time in three years. The six-foot-five forward from Washington Academy in the nation’s capital was the leading scorer for the Seahawks with 15.6 points per game average. The Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team finished the 2021-2022 season with a 17-12 overall record and 13-9 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Gates fills the role of The Rock’s top two scorers who are graduating. “Khalid Gates follows in a long line of Seahawks who have moved on to continue their academic and athletic careers. Slippery Rock is getting an outstanding basketball player, but an even better person. Khalid is a high-level player. We were

blessed to have him the extra year because of Covid. I am certain he will do outstanding things for Coach (Ian) Grady and the Slippery Rock team,” said Cecil College Head Coach Ed Durham. Gates, a general studies major, was named All-Region 20 First Team as he averaged 7.8 rebounds per game along with his scoring average. He was then honored as a First Team All-American for NJCAA Division II men’s basketball and was selected to compete at the 2022 NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches All-Star Game in Las Vegas. Twenty-four athletes from across the three divisions of the NJCAA were selected. Cecil College is a Division II program. The Seahawks finished the 2021-2022 season with a 27-4 record after winning the Region 20 championship before going to the national tournament in Danville, Ill. Gates was a member

of both teams that qualified for the national tournament, with the Seahawks placing third in the nation during the 2018-2019 season. The 2020-2021 season was canceled due to the pandemic. Gates scored double-digits in 21 games and recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds in nine games this season. He tallied a career-high 31 points against No. 3 Sullivan County Community College in the quarterfinal round of the national tournament and a career-high 19 rebounds against Garrett College on December 15. In January, he was also named Maryland JUCO and NJCAA Region 20 Division II Player of the Month for his outstanding performance. Gates finished his career as a Seahawk with 671 career points, 452 of them coming from the 20212022 season.

Cecil College Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

NORTH EAST, Md. – Cecil College held its Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, April 23, with seven of its icons recognized. The Class of 2020 includes pioneers who all had a hand in the Cecil athletic programs’ creation, development, and growth. These individuals are being honored as the Class of 2020 as the ceremony was originally planned for two weeks after the pandemic lockdown. Due to health issues and covid only four of the Class of 2020 inductees were able to attend the ceremony held in the Physical Education Complex on the North East Campus. Also honored that evening was Baseball Coach Charles “Charlie” O’Brien for his induction into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame! The Hall of Fame committee, made up of alumni, current coaches, and staff, honored Paul

Bauer, Debra (Bowers) Fitzgerald, Barbara (Howell) Monger, Rashad Brooks, Dwayne “DJ” Wootson, Michael McCardell, and Wayne Franklin, at the ceremony honoring the Class of 2020. The purpose of the Cecil College Athletics Hall of Fame is to honor individuals who, through participation, support or interest, have made outstanding contributions or brought recognition to the athletic programs of Cecil College. The inductees in attendance included: Debra Fitzgerald was a four-sport athlete at then Cecil Community College from 1978-1980, earning an Associate of Arts in Business Management. She competed in the volleyball, basketball, bowling, and softball programs, earning Most Valuable Player honors both years on the softball diamond and at the net for the volleyball team in 1979, along with Athlete of the Year in 1980. Upon

graduation, she continued her career with the Seahawks as a volleyball and softball programs coach. She went on to coach volleyball at Goldey Beacom College in Delaware. A native of North East, Md., Barbara Monger was a three-sport athlete at then Cecil Community College, having turned down a scholarship to American University to remain close to home. During the 1978 and 1979 seasons, she competed in the women’s basketball program, softball squad, and volleyball team. Monger received multiple post-season honors, including All-NJCAA Second Team in volleyball, All-Region XX Second Team twice for basketball, and All-Region XX Second Team twice for softball. She currently lives in Rising Sun, having had a 37-year career with the Department of the Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Rashad Brooks was a standout on the

men’s basketball team from 1996-1999, having red-shirted one season. He was a 1,000 point scorer for the Seahawks while averaging 17.5 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.9 assists over 61 games. In the post-season, he was honored with First Team All-Maryland JUCO, All-Region XX, and Third Team All-American. He returned to Cecil College in 2009 to coach the Seahawks for three seasons, accumulating a 79-18 record and guiding Cecil to a sixthplace finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. Dwayne “DJ” Wootson was the iron man for the Seahawks during the mid-90s and became the all-time leading scorer at Cecil College. Scoring 1,519 points in 62 games over two seasons, Wootson averaged 24.5 points along with 5.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds. In the 1998-1999 season, he was named First Team All-Maryland JUCO, Second Team All-Region

XX, and All-Tournament Team at the NJCAA National Tournament. Charles “Charlie” O’Brien’s presence throughout the tri-state region goes far beyond the chalk lines on the baseball field. With more than 20 years of NJCAA coaching experience, O’Brien has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of students through support long after they have left Cecil College. At Keystone College in northern Pennsylvania, his teams won 136 games before returning to Cecil County in 1995. Under his guidance, the Seahawks have accumulated 586 victories, earning him the Maryland Junior College Conference Baseball Coach of the Year award three times. He was also a three-time recipient of the NJCAA Region XX Coach of the Year and the 2011 NJCAA Northeast District Coach of the Year.
