“Not only did he run faster this year than at his first meet last year, he stayed with the bus to help coach unload all the tents, water jug, med kit and team bag. This is outstanding sportsmanship and means a ton. Sports is all about creating good humans, and Jake is a great example of a fantastic asset to our team!” - Coach McKay

“Cami scored our only two goals in our victory against North Harford, a very competitive team over the past few seasons. The second goal was off a direct free kick. Cami has proven herself as a leader on and off the field with her positive attitude, sportsmanship, and dedication to this team. She is a leader on the field with her quick ball skills, sharp passing, and team leading shots on goal.” - Coach Tosh

INDIANS BATTLE PANTHERS FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON BUT WEATHER PUTS IT ON HOLD.. TWICE!

NORTH EAST - The North East Indians and Perryville Panthers faced off in Week 2 of Football Season each with an 0-1 record. Heat and weather had played a part in rescheduling games all week and Friday night would not be any different. The game would be called due to lightning with one minute remaining in the third quarter. Perryville had just scored a touchdown and gained the lead in the game 20-14. Unable to continue play the teams rescheduled for Saturday at 6pm but that start time ended up not being early enough before an-

other severe storm woudl come through and stop play again with 7 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. At press time the game had still not been concluded but is scheduled to be continued on Monday Sept 11 at 4pm. The Indians trail the Panthers 28-14 and will have a tough path to victory needing atleast two touchdowns to send the game into over time.

Lightning Delay Cuts Eagles vs Tigers Short

By Anthony Pompilii

Rising Sun, Md – Although lightning cut the Bohemia Manor Eagles vs Rising Sun football game short in the 3 rd quarter, it did not take the spark out of the game. The Bohemia Manor Eagles traveled to Rising Sun this past Friday, to face county rivals under the lights. With the Eagles coming off a huge win over the Kent County Trojans the previous week, they were looking to advance to 2-0. The Eagles started off the game extremely strong. After kicking off to the Tigers, the dominate Eagles defense forced a 4 th and 10, making the Tigers punt the ball. The Eagles offense did not hesitate to get hot quickly. Running back # 3, Xavier Granado put pressure on the Tiger defense fast. Granado broke free and had a 37-yard run on

the eagles opening drive. # 2 Nate Fleming finished off the drive with a 24-yard sweep down the sideline and into the endzone, putting the Eagles up early with a score of 7-0. The Eagles continued the momentum of defense by forcing another 3-and-out, forcing the Tigers to punt yet again. Just when the Tigers were on their back foot, # 3 John Horne of Rising Sun came up with an interception towards the end of the first quarter. This gave the Tiger’s some momentum on both sides of the ball. Standout player for the Tiger’s, # 33 Travis Bare, broke free with a 20-yard run into the endzone towards the end of the first quarter. Going into the second quarter, the score remained 7-6 with the Eagles ahead. Going into the second quarter, the game became a chess match. Both teams shut

down each other on both sides of the ball. Drive after drive it became a slow battle between both teams. There was not much action for most of the second quarter. Although both teams did have some moments, the score remained the same with the Eagles up going into the half, 7-6. The Eagles kicked off the second half of the game with # 2 Nate Fleming securing a long 35 yard run against the Tiger’s defense. This did not hold the Tiger’s down as they stopped the Eagles and forced a 4 th down. Just as they did this, lightning in the sky became extremely prevalent. The whole sky began to light up. The game was then put on hold and then postponed. The Eagles and Tigers will resume their battle on Monday, September 11 th .

CRUSADERS SWEEP PANTHERS 3-0

By Kevin Phillips

ELKTON– Tri-State Christian Academy entered its non-conference volleyball match against visiting Perryville enthusiastic at the opportunity to play against a public school within the

county. The Crusaders had the energy level it wanted in the opening stages to take control of the match and regained that energy at the end en route to sweeping (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) the Panthers.

“I think we fed off of our enthusiasm for playing our first real game against a public school, and they were really excited about that and fed off the energy,” Tri-State head coach Cinda Thomas said. The Crusaders rode

that initial burst of energy to establish control of the first game early as they jumped out to a 12-3 lead thanks to a pair of 6-0 runs, which were powered by accurate serves, and they never looked back, earning a 2518 victory and taking a 1-0

lead in the match. Two of the main reasons why Tri-State wanted to have a high energy level at the start was that it allows it to play with more confidence and at a tempo it is comfortable with. “We told the team be-

fore the game started to keep the energy high because sometimes when we have low energy it makes us not play as well,” the Crusaders’ Etta Harris said. “When we encourage each continued on B-2

other, it helps us build our confidence, and I think it helps us play the game at a faster pace. We like to play really energetically.” The second game between Tri-State and Perryville was much closer than the first as the largest lead was four points, but after a 16-16 tie midway through, the Crusaders scored nine out the set’s last 14 points to earn a 25-21 lead and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Tri-State slowly took control of the third game, building a 16-11 lead mid-

way through the frame, but the Panthers responded by going on an 8-2 run to take the lead at 19-18, prompting a Crusader timeout. During the break, TriState discussed how they needed to regain the energy they had earlier in the match, and coming out of the timeout, the Crusaders scored eight unanswered points to the frame 25-19 and complete the sweep. “I feel like we needed to pick up the energy, so we talked about how we needed to cheer on every point and how we needed to lift each other up and en-

courage each other,” Bailey Thomas said. “I think we did that at the end and we got those points.” Tri-State relished the opportunity to play a public school in Cecil County as most of its opponents are private schools, which was evident in the energy level the Crusaders brought into the contest. “Playing against a public school is really cool for us. We don’t get to do that much, so it is a really big deal,” Harris said. “Just any win is a big deal. We were really excited to win this game.”

Annual Track and Trail Invitational Hosts 17 Schools By Katie Callaghan and Sarah Villatoro Puerta

FAIR HILL - Last Saturday runners from 17 schools arrived bright and early for the annual Track and Trail Invitational. For many, this was the first meet of the season, and a chance to see what this year would have in store. The meet was hosted by Bo Manor’s cross country program, which ran the meet well, despite the hot and steamy weather. As the meet went on, and temperatures rose, athletes had to stay hydrated and out of the sun as much as possible. Despite the hot conditions, Cecil’s athletes

Exhibition highlights artist's view on climate tipping points

ELKTON, Md.: The Cecil College Art and Design Program will feature a solo exhibition by Craig McDowall entitled “Elemental Forces” at the Elkton Station Gallery, located at 107 Railroad Avenue, Elkton, Md. The “Elemental Forces” exhibit opens in conjunction with the Elkton Art Loop First Friday event on October 6. There will be an opening reception on Friday, Oct. 6, from 5 – 8 p.m. “I am concerned about climate change and its effect on everything globally. The topic encompasses all aspects of life, and I would have to dig deep to find something that ties it all together artistically. I explored the idea of climate models for a long time, but it didn’t quite click,” said McDowall. Then, while listening to a radio program suggesting various aspects of climate change are reaching “tipping points,” or the point of no return, McDowall knew immediately what his theme would be. He quickly scribbled the phrase on a sticky note. Through drawings and large sculpture, McDowall explores his view that nature strives for balance while humanity constantly pushes in destructive directions. He visually explores a tipping point being reached, and nature drastically adjusting to maintain the balance. His art conveys tension; a moment when things might tumble out of control. The artworks include the classical Greek elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. McDowell’s work suggests that those are the elements that appear to be attacking humanity at every turn as the climate changes. McDowall contends that humanity is a fifth element in a new Anthropocene epoch and that there is constant tension between the Greek elements, technology, and humanity.

“My work represents my view that humanity has pushed the other elements to their tipping point, and nature will try to restore the balance of the Elemental Forces,” said McDowell. “Which may cause tumult.” A native of Colorado who now lives in Maryland, McDowall earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree with concentrations in sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. After graduation, he exhibited his work widely in Colorado at juried and invitational exhibits. McDowell and his wife Cathy lived for a time in Texas, where he attended the San Antonio Art Institute as an artist-in-residence. While living in the Pacific Northwest, he was the finalist for

a large outdoor sculpture commission in Olympia, Washington. In 2012, the couple moved to Perryville, Md., where he enjoys sketching and continuing the Unintentional Night Club Series. His work can be viewed at www. craigmcdowall.com Stop by the Elkton Station Gallery during regular Elkton Station hours to view all works. Grant covers cost of degree for childcare providers NORTH EAST, Md. – With the ever-growing need for childcare providers in the region, Cecil College provides a pathway for current caretakers to earn a degree in the field of education at no cost to them. Cecil College is the recipient of a $50,514 grant from the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Early Childhood to fund the Child Care Career and Professional Development Fund (CCCPDF). The CCCPDF covers all tuition, books, and fees for childcare providers interested in pursuing an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education. This is the sixth year for this grant at Cecil College. To qualify for this program, students must work in a licensed childcare center or be a licensed family childcare provider in Maryland, working for at least 10 hours per week. Additionally, participants must commit to 10 hours per week working in childcare in Maryland, a service commitment following graduation. The number of years of service is determined by how many credits the State pays for during the degree completion period with a maximum of two years for an associate degree. “Increasing the level of education for our valued early childhood professionals in Cecil County is beneficial for individual personal growth and building a community of highly trained educators. The caretakers

who value professionalism want to create quality early learning environments and advocate for the children and families they serve are the most impactful,” said Alyssa Ehrsam, Coordinator - Child Care Career and Professional Development Fund. While participating in the program, students have access to guidance and counseling from the coordinator of the CCCPDF who provides support with the application process, maintains grant requirements, mentor students, oversees the degree process, and serves as a liaison in connecting students with support services offered through the college. The new applicant deadline is March 1 each year, and accepted students will receive funding the following fall semester. Cecil College is centrally located in Maryland’s most northeastern county with campuses in North East and Elkton. The College features a diverse student population, with approximately 2,200 credit students and 2,300 non-credit students. Cecil College offers associate degrees, certificate programs, and non-credit classes. To learn more about this opportunity, contact Alyssa Ehrsam, Coordinator - Child Care Career and Professional Development Fund, at ehrs6670@cecil.edu or call 410-599-5263.

Cecil County Dragoway

BY PAULA HENDERSON NEWTON

When Cecil County Dragoway opened on Sunday, April 14, 1963, 3000 anxious spectators were there to watch 135 cars compete for trophies. The dragstrip was advertised as the finest and newest in the State of Maryland. Located on Theodore Road in Bay View, the strip was 4000 x 60 feet of hi traction asphalt paving with seating for 4000 spectators and was sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association. It featured a chrondek dual lane timing system, automatic wind judge and foul system along with a pit area that would accommodate 800 cars and included running water. Pits opened at 9 a.m., inspection began at 10 a.m. and eliminations started at 2 p.m. Al Procipo and Sonny DeCesaris, who had an interest in Capital Raceway and were contractors from Upper Marlboro, MD, purchased the property from Mr. Racine. The dragstrip became known as the “Traction Capital of the Nation” because of the combination of the type of asphalt and the humid weather conditions in Cecil County. It was known in the racing circuit that you could set your best record at Cecil County. In the early days Cecil County Dragoway, which was a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Division 1 raceway, attracted all the big name drivers, many from California. There were 7 divisions and Division 1 ran from Maryland to Connecticut. Drivers were paid for match races which was important since there were no sponsors at this time. Later, Coke became one of the first sponsors. A divisional race was run each year to certify national records. Ron McNeal, who worked there from 1968-77 remembered that during the summer months there were match races on Friday and Saturday nights and Friday and Sunday during the Spring and Fall. The track opened at 3:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. were time trials and the elimination runs started under the lights at 8:00 p.m.Hot cars were in lane 1 and super stockwere in lane 3. Bob Fry, who announced at ATCO would come on Friday. There were 3 lines and they figured the mph by clocking the mph at the 1st and 3rd lines and then took an average. The2nd line was the finish. The girls in the tower recorded the elapsed time & mph, the car and the driver’s name. They made up a time card and dropped it in the downspout that dumped into a box. Ron would take the card and hand it to the driver. Cars were inspected atthe scales by Ron, Willis May and Parker Keene where they would put the car number on the side window. The drivers also had to sign a waiver.

Ron recalled Tommy Grove, a driver who traveled the circuit, came to race but didn’t have a name on his car. Al, one of the owners, wasn’t going to let him race so Ron, who had a garage nearby, took the car there and had Larry Gilbert paint the name on the side of the car which he did for $35.00. Well known drivers had to agree to make 3 runs to get paid since they were the attraction that drew the big crowds.“Eliminator” driven by Dino Don Nicholson was the 1st plastic body car in 1966. On race day the owners stood at the gate on the pit side and sold tickets. They had to pay an amusement tax to the County based on sales. The circuit drivers might have been the attraction, but the local drivers filled up the pits. Everyone that had a fast car wanted to take it to the drag strip to see what it would do. There was an excitement created by the smell of burned rubber and gasoline along with the eardrum splitting sound of souped up engines roaring down the track. During intermission they played the same Four Tops song. As spectators there was also the anticipation and fear that someone would lose control. On opening day six county drivers captured trophies. Daniel Johnson, Chesapeake City, driving a 1956 Chevrolet in the H Stock Car Class at 87.63 mph; Walter Jermyn, Elkton, driving a 1963 Falcon in the M Stock Car Class at 72.46 mph; Bob McMillan, North East, driving a 1962 Ford in the I Stock Automatic Class at 88.92 mph; Robert Trainer, North East, driving a 1962 Corvette in the A Sports Class at 102.28 mph; Dan Boines, Elkton, driving a 1948 Ford with a Pontiac engine in the C Dragsters Class pictured: Jim Sellers, Winner of the CARS Magazine sponsored at 101.23 mph; and James Given, Elkton, driving a 1963 race day photo courtesy of HSCC Corvette in the C Automatic Class at 77.31 mph. One memorable event was when CARS magazine heck out more from the istorical ociety hosted a race weekend and had all the top drivers there to compete, but local boy Jim Sellers beat them all in a 1967 Chevelle that he had purchased from Rand Chevrolet in of ecil ounty online at ecil istory org Elkton. There has been one constant at the dragstrip over the years and that is Lance Keene from Aberdeen. Ron McNeal hired him as a starter and he performed that job until just a few years ago. In the mid-1970s the four owners of ATCO purchased the drag strip and changed the name to the Cecil County Dragway. Under this ownership, the drag strip deteriorated, however, the current owner, Jimmy Halsey, has made a successful comeback with weekly races and special events.
