INDIANS HAVE MOMENTUM HEADING INTO FINAL WEEK OF SEASON

By Kevin Phillips

CHESAPEAKE CITY–North East faced Elkton for the second time in three weeks when it traveled to Bohemia Manor for an inter-county trimeet Wednesday afternoon. The Indians stuck to the basics against the Golden Elks, and that approach enabled them to win 10 matches on the evening en route to a 54-13 win for their second win over Elkton this season. “I think everybody wrestled the match they knew how to wrestle, and they didn’t try to do too

much,” North East head coach Mark Mossa said. “They really focused on the fundamentals. They went out there and executed. I couldn’t be happier.” The Indians won five matches via pinfall, three victories via forfeit and two victories via decision. Mason Boyd scored North East’s first pinfall victory when he won his match in 47 seconds at 113 pounds, and Gabe Luckhardt followed that up two matches later at 126 pounds, scoring a pinfall 1:22 into the match. Manny Rose, Ethan Doctor and James Paylor

also earned pinfall victories for the Indians at 171, 182 and 195 pounds respectively, and Doctor said he believed his team showed improvement since their last meet against Elkton. “We came out better than the last time. We were sloppy that time. We weren’t as sloppy as we were the first time. We still have a lot to work on,” Doctor said. Sean Aberin gave North East a victory via a 1614 decision at 160 pounds in a back-and-forth match, and Mason Pritchett added a 10-4 decision to the Indians’ win tally.

North East also got victories from Keegan Allen, Mark Goasher and Blaydon Blake at 106, 132 and 152 pounds via forfeit, and Mossa said the Indians have done a good job just working on getting the win. “We’ve been working on our fundamentals and not trying to do too much, teaching the guys not to do some crazy moves to get the win,” Mossa said. Elkton got wins from Tyson Gibson, Nate Hare and Hector Rivera at 120, 138 and 145 pounds respectively.

EAGLES WIN 9 of 11 MATCHES FOR WIN OVER ELKS By Kevin Phillips

CHESAPEAKE CITY–Bohemia Manor nearly completely executed its game plan in its tri-meet battle with visiting Elkton en route to a 51-9 victory Wednesday evening. The Eagles won nine of the 11 contested matches on the day, including seven via pinfall, and head coach Tyear Castle was happy with the way his team performed against the Golden Elks. “We came in with a focused mentality. We came in with a game plan against Elkton,” Castle said. “We executed it well, and we are happy with the results from that match.” Bo Manor won the first three matches of the event via pinfall when Matt Cooper, Josh Allen and Chase Rondon won their matches at 113, 120 and 125 pounds respectively to take an 18-0 lead in the match. After Austin Smith won by forfeit at 132 pounds, Landon Caltron added another pinfall victory when he won his match at 138 pounds in 1:16 to give the Eagles a

30-0 lead in the contest. Miles Bannister won Bo Manor’s sixth straight match when he earned a 10-4 decision at 145 pounds to make it 33-0, and he said he was excited for his match against Elkton. “I was pretty confident. I felt warm,” Bannister said. “I was excited for the match. I got on the mat and smelled the fear, and I prevailed.” Noah Beck, Charlie Rinker and Pharel Petitfrere each won their matches via a pin for the Eagles at 152, 170 and 185 pounds respectively for their final wins of the dual meet. While Bo Manor

earned the victory, Bannister feels like the team is still in the process of finding itself and improving as the season progresses. “We have still not reached our full potential. We’re losing some team members and gaining some team members,” Bannister said. “I still don’t know where we’re going to end up at the end of the season, but I know it’s going to be better than we are now.” The Golden Elks got a 2-0 decision victory from Ethan Parker Wyatt at 285 pounds and a forfeit victory by Malachi Lucas-Pratt at 195 pounds.

WRESTLING: BOHEMIA MANOR vs NORTH EAST

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

NORTH EAST WRESTLERS DEFEAT BOHEMIA MANOR

By Kevin Phillips

CHESAPEAKE CITY–North East and Bohemia Manor battled in a highly-anticipated UCBAC wrestling contest in the final event of a tri-meet. The visiting Indians prevailed 46-27 as they used a high energy level throughout the meet to win fives of the seven contested matches Wednesday night. “They had high energy from start to finish,” North East head coach Mark Mossa said. “These guys wanted from the minute they got on the bus. They worked hard, and I like it when they get to see the results on the mat.” The Indians received pinfall victories from Gabe Luckhardt at 126 pounds and Mason Boyd at 113 pounds, but it was their performance in the matches

that went the distance that proved to be the difference against the Eagles. North East won three of the four matches that came down to a decision, starting with Mark Grosher winning his match at 138 pounds in a 10-4 decision, and the Indians’ performance in the matches that went the full distance was due to them working with what was given to them. “The guys had good, fundamental wrestling. They didn’t try too much,” Mossa said. “They didn’t panic. They were able to stay calm and composed and were able to get key decisions where we needed them.” Bo Manor held a 21-15 at the halfway point in the meet, and the next two matches determined the fate of the contest as four of

the final five matches ended up as forfeits. Manny Rose brought North East to within two points at 21-19 when he won his match at 170 pounds via a 14-6 majority decision, and Ethan Doctor gave the Indians the lead for good when he won his match at 182 pounds by the score of 9-5. With the win, North East improved its record to 7-3 on the season, but Doctor believes the team still has to improve and it is not time to relax. “At this point in the year, I feel like we are not at our best. We’re doing good and getting better and better,” Doctor said. “But we always can get better.” Miles Bannister won via 6-5 decision at 145 pounds and Noah Beck scored a pinfall victory at 152

pounds for Bo Manor’s victories in contested matches, but in the end, the Eagles’ small roster size hinders its chances in dual meets because they are always chasing points against teams with larger rosters. “We also came in with a game plan. North East came in with a better game plan,” Bo Manor head coach Tyear Castle said. “Wrestling is not only a physical sport. It’s also a game of chess in the long run, putting the forfeits in the right place, skipping certain matches and giving your team the best ability to win. We came back to the same thing that we wind up going back to. We give up too many points for forfeits.”

RAMS DEFENSE KEY IN 54-48 WIN OVER TOME By Karina Serio

The Rams from visiting West Nottingham Academy charged out to an early double-digit lead against host Tome School in a cross-county Mid-Atlantic Independent League rivalry matchup. The Titans closed the gap to a couple of baskets throughout the second half, but the Ram’s driven defense pushed them to a 54-48 victory. Looking back on the game, Rams Assistant Coach Aaron Byrd said, “We were locked in on the little things, the rebounds, the turnovers, the fouls that just don’t make sense. It's the little things that are either going to help us get up 15 or make us get beat in the game which would have happened tonight.” Byrd went on to assess his team's

performance, “They locked in, they got some really good key steals and they made great decisions on all things, like getting the ball to Tolu in the post. So we just kind of relaxed and were patient on offense, but on defense we really stepped it up.” Top scorers for the Ram’s were Tolu Semowo with 15 points and Iago Focinos Gutierrez with 13. “Block everyone, but more specifically since most centers can shoot, stay in the paint when we both get in that area. Not necessarily block, but just jump and make it more difficult even if they score, make it more difficult for them to score again. On offense, just pass the ball, if I’m alone score, and if they double me, everyone on my team can shoot, so send it to one of them,” said Semowo, looking for

the source of their win. “We stayed focused and we made a lot of mistakes, but everytime we made a mistake we corrected it. When I was fouling a lot, Coach corrected it. When we turned it over. He corrected it. We learned as the game went on. We didn't stick to what we were doing wrong, and making the same mistakes.” For the Titans, Gavin Davis led all scorers, draining 21 points. “We made foolish mistakes. We knew we could get points in the paint but driving head on with someone twice your size typically entails a blocked shot,” said Davis, reflecting on the loss. “We lacked our perimeter shooting, and we had some very costly turnovers in the 4th. We lost mentally before we had lost physically.”

LADY TITANS BACK ON WINNING TRACK

DEFEAT CONFERENCE RIVAL WEST NOTTINGHAM ACADEMY 49-28 By Karina Serio

West Nottingham’s Varsity Girls basketball team was on the road Tuesday night facing off against the Tome Lady Titans. The Rams started off slow and were unable to catch up to the Lady Titan’s 18 point lead at the end of the second quarter. Although they put up a fight in the second half it just wasn’t enough. Resulting in a 4928 win for Tome. Tome had its own battle, unable to rely on their ace, Emmerson Peel, who is coming back from covid protocols. Juniors Campbell Walker and Landen Cain had

to step up scoring 20 and 10 points respectively. “I feel like I definitely had to step up. There was definitely some pressure on Liv, Landen, and I to come together especially since Emmerson won’t be here next year. I did feel some pressure, but I also just wanted to be there for my team,” said Walker, who went on to comment on the Rams' motivated second half. “The Rams definitely came out stronger and we had to realize that and that they were still in the game, it wasn’t going to be an easy win. We had to come back with the pressure too.”

Peel, somewhat discouraged about her performance, but proud of her teammates, commented,” I was out of practice for two weeks. I haven't touched a basketball. It's just much harder for me to do everything I want to. I feel bad because I can’t play how I used to play and it's frustrating to me because I know how I can play. Peel went on to say, “Campbell and Landen did amazing tonight and it's really cool to see everyone else doing their part.” Josephine Vebiu added 11 points for the Rams. Martina Barreto, Jenniah Odige, and Emma Ibanez each added 5.

JEREMIAH FALKO LEADS CRUSADERS IN 72-28 WIN OVER TIGERS By Kevin Phillips

ELKTON – Tri-State Christian Academy head coach Bill Smith believes that a good offense is predicated on having a great defense, especially when that offense comes off the transition. That philosophy came to be successful in the Crusaders’ non-conference boys’ basketball matchup against visiting Rising Sun as they made 13 three-pointers in a 72-28 victory over the Tigers on Thursday night. “We have a lot of three-point shooters. Tonight, our game evolved from the defensive end, that transition ball,” Smith said. “We got these guys to fall in love with defense and transition into playing offense. We were shooting well from the three-point line.” Tri-State’s strong three-point shooting was evident from the start as it made four shots from beyond the arc in the first quarter, resulting in a 16-6 lead after eight minutes.

The strong longrange shooting continued into the second quarter as the Crusaders sank three more three-pointers en route to outscoring the Tigers 2510 in the frame and increasing their lead to 41-16 going into halftime. In addition to creating three-point opportunities coming off the fast break, Jeremiah Falco, who had a game-high 20 points, said that Tri-State did a good job swinging the ball around, creating open looks for their shooters in the half-court set. “We were passing it around and getting open looks and making the defense shift,” Falco, who made five three-pointers, said. The Crusaders added four more three pointers in the third quarter as they won the frame 18-6 and increased their lead to 5922, putting the game out of reach, and with the game firmly in hand, they capped off their strong night by adding two more three-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Tri-State also had a strong game defensively in its full-court press and its half-court set, and Smith credits strong communication for that. “It's the desire for the ball. It’s spacing. Here’s what it really is, it’s talking, talking on every switch, and our guys started communicating when it’s time for a double team or a pick is coming,” Smith said. “We are talking it out. The guys are doing a good job talking.” “We talk a lot. We know each other. We talk to each other, and it’s normally like this,” Falko added. Tri-State got 16 points from Sam Falko and 15 from Dante Jenson. Luke Moore scored 13 points to pace Rising Sun.
