Eagles Dominate Season Opener
PHOTOS: SAM DIXON By Kevin Phillips Bohemia Manor took the gridiron to play a game that counts in the standings for the first time since 2019 when it traveled to Kent County High School for a nonconference football battle Friday night. The Eagles celebrated their return to the field with a convincing 43-19 season-opening victory over the host Trojans behind Jake Koehler’s four touchdowns runs. “It feels great. Adrenaline is up. Pride is up. It feels great to be back out here and play the game that I love,” Koehler said after the game. While Bo Manor (1-0) played a short series of unofficial games last year, it
was not the same as a real game for the team, and it relished the opportunity to put the pads on and hit someone and have it mean something. “You see the smile on my face. It was a lot of fun, and that’s what I talked about the whole pregame, which was “we’ve been waiting for this,’” Eagle head coach Vince Ricci said. “We had that little mini-season, but they were scrimmages. Now, they actually count. It’s big to get back out there. We’re happy that the whole county and the whole state is playing.” Bo Manor got on the board in the first quarter when Koehler powered his way into the endzone for a 6-yard touchdown, and the team converted the ensuing two-point
conversion to make it 8-0. After stopping the Trojans on the ensuing possession, the Eagles struck quickly with a long touchdown connection between quarterback Rob Siek and receiver Tyler Losten to make it 14-0. Koehler added touchdown runs of 26 and 16 yards in the second quarter to help Bo Manor jump out to a 30-0 halftime lead, and Lotsen said the Eagles’ strong first half was a result of the offensive unit working in sync with each other. “Our offensive line was blocking really well,” Lotsen said. “Our quarterback was throwing the ball really well, and our running backs were reading the holes perfectly.” After stopping Kent Coun-
ty on downs on the opening possession of the first half, the Eagles covered 44 yards in 4 plays, culminating with Koehler’s fourth touchdown run of the game on a 29-yard scamper to make it 36-0 with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter. Siek cites the Bo Manor offensive line for the team’s strong performance as it opened up holes for the running backs and gave the quarterback time to throw the ball throughout the game. “Without the o-line, we wouldn’t do what we were able to do. The o-line gets all the credit,” Siek said. Ricci was especially happy with the offensive line’s effort against the Trojans considering the inexperience some of
the lineman have playing the position. “Our offensive line really grinded it out. We had a couple of guys on our offensive line playing their first ever games on the offensive line, and we could not have asked to do a better job. The execution was almost flawless.” Bo Manor’s final touchdown of the game came late in the fourth quarter when Mar Wesley received a kickoff, burst through the middle of the Trojan kick coverage unit, and raced his way into the endzone for an 82-yard touchdown. The Eagles look to continue their strong start when they travel to Patterson Mill for a UCBAC Susquehanna Division contest Friday night.

ELKTON WINS 48-20 After over 600 days the Elkton Golden Elks and Rising Tigers varsity football teams were able to take the field in an actual football game in front of family, friends and students. Football was back between two county rivals and the teams played a hard fought contest. Ian Brown lead the Elks on the ground with 112 rushing yards and two rush-
ing touchdowns. Senior Jayden Triplett lead the passing attack in the first half, delivering 3 touchdowns on 7 completions. Junior Eli Latshaw took over in the second half and paced the Elks with 7 more completions for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Kyrie Tyson caught two touchdowns to go along with his 114 receiving yards.
Additionally, Isaiah Huffstutler, Amir Bolton and Jaden Nichols all caught touchdowns for the Golden Elks. Defensively, the Elks were able to adjust at halftime to hold Rising Sun scoreless. Ian Brown lead the way with 15 tackles and Brian Pearson contributed with a strip and fumble recovery.

Indians Gritty In Loss To Mustangs
PHOTOS: JACKI TAYLOR
The North East Indians started their Regular Season on their Home Field this past Friday facing the C. Milton Wright Mustangs. The CMW Mustangs scored their first touchdown after a NE fumble deep in Indians Territory. North East Defense was able to then hold the Mustangs scoreless through to the fourth quarter. Offensively the Indians were not able
to get on the scoreboard until the 3rd quarter when Conner Keen gave the Indians 6 points and the opportunity to tie up the game. The Indians were unable to convert the extra point and went into the fourth quarter trailing the Mustangs by one. The Mustangs scored again with an interception in the fourth quarter that was returned for a touchdown
putting the Mustangs ahead by 8.

Panthers Lose Close Road Battle To Hawks
Perryville Defense holds North Harford to two scores in close game but Offense can’t capitalize on opportunity. By Shawn Huth Perryville traveled to North Harford High on a chilly Friday night for their 7 o’clock game. On a cloudy day at 68 degrees, it felt like a perfect night for football. Both teams looked to start off their year with a win, hoping to have a great season ahead. Perryville received the ball first to begin the game, starting on their own 29. After 2 rushes and a scramble with solid defensive play from North Harford, Perryville was forced to punt. This would write the story for the whole first half. North Harford’s first drive started out strong with a strong dart throw for 20 yards. After that, good defensive plays and a spectacular fourth down stand led by Daniel Tserkis stopped North Harford’s drive. Perryville’s next drive led to a punt, snapped over Sophomore punter Zach
Ayers’ head, all the way back to the 18 yard line. Somehow Zach sent a booming punt to the North Harford 26 for 56 yards. North Harford’s next set of downs showed a great scramble by the quarterback for 15 yards and a 25 yard pass to the wide receiver who burned past corner Reggie Rhoades who was in press coverage. Soon after, Daniel Tserkis made sure to stop the oncoming North Harford offense and intercepted a jump ball throw. Perryville’s third drive of the game still didn’t show much. A couple short gains and a 15 yard reception from Daniel Tserkis showed that Perryville could move the ball, but a terrible miss on a wide open Jaimere Guy for a huge gain forced Perryville to punt a third time. Zach Ayers punted a ball 50 yards inside the 10, and North Harford tried to get their offense going. A scramble for 30 yards highlighted the drive but a great
open field tackle by safety Zach Ayers and a fantastic defensive stand on 4th down led by defensive tackle Timmy Bartram stopped the attack. The following two drives showed nothing for either team. North Harford’s linebacker had a huge sack causing a difficult field goal attempt that was missed. During North Harford’s attempt, Kyler Brown had a sack and a bad snap on 4th down led to a turnover on downs. The first half was extremely defensive and neither team showed any true signs of a high scoring offense. Kicking off the second half North Harford’s offense was shut down again with John Kilby recording a sack. Perryville’s offense started off strong with solid rushing from Jaimere Guy, but then were forced to punt again. Finally, there was some action on offense. North Harford had a big scramble and then
a huge gain on a pass past corner Reggie Rhoades in press coverage again. Soon enough the North Harford offense scored a passing touchdown and then rushed for the two point conversion bringing the score to 8 to nothing. Perryville’s next drive started off in the beginning of the fourth quarter and went by fast. On the second play, halfback/wide receiver, Zack Clarke ran for a 57 yard rushing touchdown. The two point conversion failed making the score 8 to 6. Hoping to get a two score lead, North Harford started their drive, but it was quickly interrupted by a great read and interception by Perryville cornerback Kyle Huth. A blind side block on the return knocked Perryville off North Harford’s side of the field. Perryville had to punt and give North Harford the ball back. North Harford proceeded to run the ball consistently and effectively,
capping the drive off with a touchdown to the uncovered tight end in the end zone. The two point conversion failed making the score 14-6. Perryville’s last chance was to have a game tying final drive. Wide receiver Caedon Kestner caught a 31 yard pass from Jayden Griffin, but that was followed by four straight incompletions ending Perryville’s chances. Closing out the game, North Harford had one rush for 60 yards and Zack Clarke made a touchdown saving tackle. North Harford respectfully kneeled the ball and ended the game. North Harford defeated Perryville 14-6 in a very defensive battle. Next week, North Harford travels to C Milton Wright who just came off of a win to North East High with the same score. Perryville hopes to get in the winning column next week when they travel to Joppatowne.

Seahawks return to the Court Cecil College Volleyball starts the season facing off against Hagerstown Community College
By Megan Steimer The Cecil College volleyball team made its long-awaited return to the court Tuesday, hosting Hagerstown Community College for the first divisional matchup of the season. Unfortunately, the excitement of opening night was short-lived as Hagerstown defeated Cecil 25-7, 25-14, and 25-11.
The Seahawks (0-1 overall, 0-1 division) fell behind 2-8 early in the first set after a six-point service run by Hagerstown’s Aliyah Dorsey but Cecil responded, winning a lengthy volley and swinging the momentum back to the Seahawks’ favor. Sophomore Emily Falko followed up with a service ace to continue the run, but it was not enough. The Hawks ul-
timately pulled away in the first set despite a strong defensive performance by freshman Amanda Wagner, who had a team high 12 digs. The beginning of the second set saw an early lead exchange before a service error by Hagerstown gave the Seahawks, trailing 5-9, the ball. Freshman Rachel Cohen capitalized on the opportunity, serving two aces followed by a tough dig to tie the score at 9-9 and put Cecil College in position to take a lead. The comeback was temporary as the Hawks fought back to close out set two and eventually took set three to win the match. Cohen led all hitters with 5 kills, 11 digs, and 3 aces followed by Wagner with 3 kills and 12 digs. Making her setting debut, Crystal Lenk finished with 9 assists, 1 dig, and 1 block for the Seahawks. Head coach Eden Barton lacked an experienced setter before Lenk stepped in to learn the role in such a short period of time. Furthermore, Cecil had some key player injuries to combat all while trying to get back into the feel of competitive play, after a nearly two-year hiatus due to covid. There’s no question the Seahawks were going through some early growing pains, but right now they are looking for a silver lining, “We’re just happy to be back out on the court” Barton said.

2021 ALL COUNTY PLAYER OF THE YEAR ADVANCES IN NATIONAL RANKINGS Rising Sun Sophomore Jordan Lynch ended her Freshman Year being named as Cecil County’s All County Player of the Year. She led the Lady Tigers in Homeruns this past Spring and was an incredible defensive player at Third Base all year.
Jordan spent her Summer Vacation playing on the Lady Dukes 16U Team coached by James Lamar. She played in multiple top events across the country including Top Gun, Top Club, Colorado Sparkler, and the PGF Nationals. Jordan had a team-leading .421 batting average with 25 RBIs on eight doubles, and five homeruns.
We posted a video of Jordan this summer on our Facebook page hitting a two-run homerun in the 5th inning at the PGF Nationals and giving her team a 2-1 lead that would ultimately win the game for the Lady Dukes. This week Extra Inning Softball announced their top 100 rankings. Last year Jordan ranked 14th in the Class of 2024. Her strong performance this past year has moved her into the Top 10 as she is now ranked 9th in her class. Jordan will be returning to the Rising Sun Tigers Varsity Softball Team in the Spring and is sure to be a dominating force all teams must prepare for.

Golf Talent Back On The Course In Full Swing Noah Wallace and Karina Serio among the Local High School Golfers playing their best games ever.
By Andrew Barbin For the first time in nearly two years, official interscholastic high school golf is being played in Cecil County. And, as any of the coaches in the county can attest, there is much to be excited by this new wave of young golfers. Rising Sun High School had over twenty golfers try out for the team, and other teams such as North East and Tome had significant turnouts for their
tryouts as well. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, high school golf was significantly limited last fall. The Parks and Recreation Department ran a few scrimmages to try to keep the local teams active, but with limited practices and other restrictions in place it was difficult to gauge exactly where everyone was at. The first match between North East, Rising Sun, and Tome on August 26th was particularly exciting for the
very reason of finding out the unknowns about the county’s rising golf stars. One of the few known storylines was quickly confirmed however, and that was in regard to North East High School’s sophomore sensation Noah Wallace. The question was never “if” Noah would dominate county golf, it was “by how much”. And it turns out that the answer to that question is “by a significant margin”. Noah has enjoyed a very success-
ful summer season, winning three times on the Philadelphia PGA’s Junior Tour with 5 runner-up finishes and 5-third place finishes. He is currently 3rd out of 175 golfers in the Player of the Year points standings, and his 77.65 scoring average is the best average by a Cecil County golfer in the Philadelphia Junior Tour since Austin Barbin’s 72.83 in 2015. Noah also had a great finish against an international field in the Optimist Interna-
tional Junior Golf Championship, finishing 13th out of 112 qualifiers in the 54-hole tournament held at Doral. Matching natural talent with an intense work ethic is a winning formula that makes Noah Wallace the county’s most exciting public school golf prospect in nearly two decades. Noah’s phenomenal shortgame was instrumental to his official high school debut performance, in which he shot a one-under par

Tome School Sophomore, Karina Serio score of 35 on the back 9 at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club. His medalist honors was 12-shots clear of the next closest junior golfer in the match, with that being teammate Lance Richardson. Despite having the top two scoring golfers in the field, North East was still shy of besting Rising Sun’s depth. Rising Sun was paced by Timmy Dobrowolski’s 48 and matching 49s from Tyler Hogue and Ben Adams. Bradley Dietz and Jake Eckman rounded out the scoring with their respective scores of 54 and 55. While each golfer didn’t have their best day, they still managed to be the lowest team of the match. Look for Rising Sun to be one of the teams to beat this season! North East was missing their #2 golfer for the match, and relied on youth and inexperience to round
out their scoring – counting a 57, 59, and 68 to fall 11-strokes short of Rising Sun 255 – 266. Tome School also touts a young and inexperienced team, but there is definitely plenty to look forward to. Back-to-back Chesapeake Bay Golf Club Girl’s Champion Karina Serio led Tome’s score of 313 with a 48 in her official high school debut, which was the third best score of the match. Karina is another up-and-coming star in the county, who has made significant progress in the two years she has been playing. Tome’s second best score was a 60 from Ryotaro Orihara, who just started playing golf this year. Look for these two to make great strides moving forward!
Addie Kelly is a Soccer Champion. On August 29th her team competed in the Spirit United Kick-Off Classic in Gettysburg, PA. Her team is The Soccer Factory. They are a 2010 girls team but played in the 2009 White division of the tournament and out scored their opponents 13-1. This is actually Addie’s first year with this team which just formed over the summer. Addie began training with Coach Chuck during quarantine to keep getting touches in while her team wasn’t practicing. She was determined to keep improving, even doing zoom trainings with him every day! When Coach Chuck decided to start a 2010 girls team, Addie switched to play for him! The girls began official practices over the summer! They train and play for The Soccer Factory, which is a soccer training facility in Forest Hill, MD focused on the development of players of all ages and abilities! Addie has been playing since she was five and was most recently playing for Pipeline North before making the switch. She plays half each game at goalie and mostly outside back the other half!

RSHS Wrestler competes in US Marine Corps Jr & 16U National Championships The Garvin name is known throughout Cecil County by everyone who follows High School Wrestling. Now there is another Garvin coming onto the High School Wrestling radar. Rising Sun Sophomore Tyler Garvin has been wrestling for 12 years. He started when he was only 4 years old and now at age 16 is one of the best wrestlers in the country.
This summer Tyler competed in the Marines 16U National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota where he placed 4th among the top wrestlers in the country. The Marines 16U Tournament is not a tournament you just sign up for. You have to win your way into this tournament through qualifier events. Tyler qualified to go to Fargo by competing in the
NE Regionals in Poconos, Pennsylvania. The Marines 16U Tournament was 5 days of wrestling with Tyler actually competing in two tournaments. The first being a Freestyle Tournament that lasted 3 days followed by a 2 day Greco Wrestling Tournament. Due to winter sports being stopped last season
we have not been able to see Tyler go up against any other Cecil County Wrestlers yet but that will change this Fall when he wrestles for the Rising Sun Tigers Team coached by his Uncle, Seth Garvin. Tyler plans to wrestle in the 106lb. weight class this Fall which is 12lbs heavier than his Fargo competition weight. He says he is currently working out and eating more to get his weight up for the season. Before the season starts this Fall he will be competing in the Super 32 Tournament in October in
Greensboro, North Carolina. “My goal is to next year make the Cadet World Team and eventually try to make the 2024 Olympic Team” says Garvin. After High School he wants to go to college to study Nutrition and work with Athletes on Strength Training but until then we can expect to see 3 exciting winters of watching Tyler wrestle in Cecil County with Rising Sun. It’s going to be an exciting winter to go out and see him compete for the Maryland State Championship.

„„ Bella Saponaro
Bella Saponaro is not your ordinary Sophomore in High School. Bella races Dragsters on the weekend going 70mph down the Cecil County Dragway. Bella received her first Dragster as a Christmas gift from her Parents, Frank and Mindy Saponaro, when only in the 6th grade. Since being in then she’s been racing whenever the Jr Dragsters are running at Cecil County Dragway. She is a student at Perryville High School and says she’s not sure if College will be the choice for her after graduation. She enjoys working more with her hands so the School of Technology is something she is currently considering for next year. When we caught up to Bella at the Races in August she was able to get in two qualifying rounds before rain would eventually shut down the track. She raced a 9.09sec get-

ting up to speeds of 70mph on the 1/8th mile. She has her eye on racing the bigger cars soon as she recently learned you don’t need a license to race in the Jr Street Class. She would need to have someone with a license riding with her until she gets her license. Racing is a family thing for the Saponaros as all of her Family come out to support the young racer on Track Day. It was an exciting time out at the track and there are many more young students from Cecil County out racing on the weekends. You can see the Jr Dragsters running the 1/8 mile at Cecil County Dragway on September 18. Bella isn’t sure if she will be racing that week as her family likes to also go camping and she likes to get away and do that on her weekends as well.
