NORTH EAST WRESTLERS DEFEAT ELKTON AND ABERDEEN IN TRI-MEET By Kevin Phillips
ELKTON–North East says the time it puts in practice was the key to its strong performance in its tri-meet battle with host Elkton and Aberdeen as it won both meets Wednesday afternoon. The Indians competed in 12 matches over the two meets, earning seven pinfall victories, and as a result, they earned 69-9 and 66-12 victories over the Eagles and Golden Elks respectively. “We came in with the expectation that we were going to work hard every match and look for the pin,” North East head coach Mark Mossa said. “I appreciate where
they had that strong mentality where they wanted to win there. They showed their skill set off to get the pin. They’re very team-oriented, and their primary focus is ‘how can I help the team and what can I do for myself?’” The Indians took on Aberdeen in the second event of the tri-meet and competed in five contested matches with North East winning eight of the nine remaining matchups via forfeit. The Eagles won the first two contested matches as JD Matherly earned an 11-4 decision at 113 pounds while Liam Peterson won his match at 126 pounds via pinfall, but the Indians won the the three remaining non-for-
feited matches. Mark Grasher and Jahaan Fields won via pinfall at 132 and 138 pounds to give North East a lead they never relinquished, and Landon Knaub earned a 6-2 decision victory at 145 pounds. The Indians did not appear to have let a twoweek layoff between meets in their matchups against Aberdeen or Elkton, and Mossa says that was a result of the team’s mentality. “I was with it. These are a great group of kids and work hard every day. They are easily motivated and like coming in here,” Mossa said. “They support each other, and once it’s match-day, I
don’t have to worry about them too much because I know they’re going to have high energy and support their teammates.” After a short break, North East took on the Golden Elks and won five of the seven contested matches via pinfall with Mason Boyle kicking things off by getting a pinfall victory at 120 pounds. Blaydon Blake (152 pounds), Kameron Schank (170 pounds), Ethan Doctor (182 pounds) and James Paylor (195) pounds scored pinfall victories, and Doctor credits strong practices for the victory. “I think we did really well in practice as a team,” Doctor said. “We worked re-
ally hard, and the coaches helped a lot.” Elkton earned two victories over North East when Matthew Eskaros and Nate Hare won their matches at 113 and 138 pounds respectively. In the opening meet of the afternoon, the Golden Elks defeated Aberdeen 30-27 as both teams were short-handed, causing the meet to have 11 forfeits. Jacob Rogers gave Elkton a victory with a pinfall victory at 170 pounds while the Eagles got victories when Matherly won via 5-3 decision at 113 pounds and when Chase Lineberry won via pinfall at 138 pounds.

CECIL COLLEGE MEN’S BASKE TBALL
NATIONALLY RANKED
CECIL SEAHAWKS
ON A 10 GAME WIN STREAK PHOTOS BY SCOTTY BENNETT
By Kevin Phillips NORTH EAST–Cecil College continued its season-long trend of having slow starts as visiting Lackawanna College (Penn.) kept pace over the first 12 minutes in nonconference men’s basketball action Thursday night. The Seahawks picked up the energy over the final eight minutes of the first half, outscoring the Falcons by 13 points during that stretch to take control of the game, and they never looked back to earn a 90-53 victory.
“The energy came up. The effort picked up,” Cecil College head coach Ed Durham said. “Our defensive pressure picked up, and it made a difference. That just helped us.” The Seahawks found themselves leading by just two points at 24-22 midway through the first half after the Falcons scored five unanswered points, but during a Lackawanna timeout with 7:39, something clicked for Cecil College. Marlon Lewis jumped started a 20-7 surge
with a layup with 7:37 left in the first half, and the Seahawks had balance as six different players scored with no one person scoring more than four points during the run. As a result of the surge, Cecil College took a 44-29 lead into halftime, and one reason for the surge was that they attacked the basket more and shot more close range shots. “During a timeout, we talked about it and saw what we had to fix,” Khalid Gates, who had four points
during the run, said, “We had to go strong to the paint and get rebounds.” The Seahawks did not let their lead dip below 15 points for the remainder of the game as they steadily pulled away in the second half for their eight straight victory and improved their record to 10-1. The game also highlighted Cecil College’s offensive depth as six players scored between 8 and 16 points led by Gates’ 16 points, and that balance is something that Durham be-
lieves is a big advantage for his team. “That’s pretty much us. We don’t have a guy that’s averaging 18-20 a game,” Durham said. “Our two leading scorers are 12 and 11. That’s been pretty much the difference all year, which is our balance.” Darell Johnson and Jacob Valeus scored 13 points for the Seahawks while Dominick Carrington, Lewis and Jordan Jones scored 11, 9 and eight points respectively.

EAGLES COME UP WITH BIG 59-40 WIN AGAINST TOME TITANS PHOTOS BY SCOTT SERIO
By Scott Serio
Bohemia Manor notched their first boy’s basketball win of the season with a 59-40 victory on the road Wednesday at the Tome School in North East. The Eagles broke the Titans early by riding the wave of a consistent full court press and aggressive defense to an insurmountable lead. Tome was held without a field goal in the second frame with only eight points from free throws, while the Eagles dropped three-pointers and 17 points. The Titans went into halftime trailing 3017. Despite several runs in the second half, Tome could never crack the Eagles’ double-digit lead. Bo Manor Head Coach Sandy Grimes made a last-minute pre-game coaching decision and it paid off. “It (pressing) was part of the game plan. Right before the game started I said ‘let’s not wait. Let’s just press them.’ I have always liked the press.” Said Grimes, “We haven’t been very good at it, but I figured if we are going to press, might as well press right from the beginning.” Grimes hopes this first win will help his team build some momentum. “We are used to our December schedule being like that, against teams that are good. We are waiting to get into our division. It is good to get a win before we start division play. That’s where we try to make our mojo,” said an optimistic Grimes as he considered what this win means for the rest of the season. “We can
score the basketball and if we play aggressive defense, things can happen. We have not played up to our potential. We are not the most gifted team, so we have to play scrappy. We have to press. We showed a little bit of life today. It’s a good sign we are headed in the right direction now.” Senior Jonas Scott led all scorers with 14 points for the Eagles. “I think we have been playing a little scared, we have been playing teams that are a little above our pay grade. To play a team we can do something against and not play scared, it was good,”
said Scott. “We always practice well, but hadn’t been playing well. It feels like we might have turned a corner.” Downplaying the size advantage Bo Manor had against Tome, the 6’5” Scott said, “Sometimes, I found that when you do have a size advantage, it is harder to score in the paint. When they don’t have a big to put on you, they end up putting three guys on you and it gets tougher to score. You have less space to work.” When the Titans doubled up on Scott, his teammates pitched in. Tyler Losten, Mason Hilliams and Jake Vaughn each
added nine points for the Eagles. Tome Head Coach Doe Goldman felt the loss was another learning experience for his young team coming off the holiday break. “We haven’t been at practice for the last 2 ½ weeks, so we didn’t really have a rhythm tonight,” said Goldman. “I was expecting them to come out and press, but we kept dribbling the ball. That’s not the game. They always play hard. But when they play hard and smart we will be just fine.” After a tough run against local public schools, Gold-
man has confidence the experience will serves his Titan team the rest of the season. “This is definitely the building block for them. This is where they will get their bumps and bruises,” said Goldman. “When we get into the MIL (Mid-Atlantic Independent League) we are going to be a whole lot stronger. We have been getting beat up by these big guys all season. That one guy was huge.” Gavin Davis and Taven Nunley led Tome scoring 12 points each.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne
* Pinball was banned in most major cities from the early 1940s to the mid1970s because it was considered a game of chance and, therefore, gambling. * Oysters can change genders back and forth. * The Zildjian Company was founded in 1623 by Avedis Zildjian, an Armenian alchemist who ended up making a cymbal instead. * Tobacco companies spend the most money on advertising in January, when many people make a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking, but the largest increase in new smokers actually occurs in the summer. * There’s a national pillow-fighting tournament in Japan. * A 43,000-square-foot room beneath the Lincoln Memorial that was forgotten about until 1974 is filled with concrete columns and has its own plant life and ecosystem, as well as graffiti from the original workers. * Humans are comprised of about 30 of the 118 elements on the periodic table. Their iPhones, however, are made up of about 75 elements. * Intelligent people have more traces of copper and zinc in their hair. * The manchineel tree is one of the most toxic trees in the world. Its sap causes blisters, eating its apples can be potentially fatal, and the smoke from a burning manchineel can cause blindness. * Pythagoras, of Pythagorean Theorem fame, ran a commune that was forbidden to wear wool, forced to put their right sandal on before their left, and believed that beans could contain the souls of the dead, so even crushing a bean was considered murder. * Every day, around 18 acres of pizza are eaten in America. * At the U.S. Open and other U.S.-based tennis tournaments, the men play with the slower, heavy-duty felt balls while the women play with the faster, regular-duty felt version.
