MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
On Feb. 13, 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating Copernican theory, which holds that the Earth revolves around the Sun. The Copernican theory conflicted with the teachings of the powerful Roman Catholic Church. On Feb. 8, 1936, University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger, the first Heisman Trophy winner, is picked No. 1 overall in the NFL draft. However, Berwanger never played for any NFL team because he had too many demands, which teams refused to meet. Instead the college star became a foam rubber salesman. On Feb. 9, 1942, the largest and most luxurious ocean liner on the seas at that time, France’s Normandie, catches fire while in the process of being converted for military use by the United States. It was to become a troop transport but ended up at the bottom of New York Harbor. On Feb. 7, 1962, President John F. Kennedy issues an executive order broadening the United States’ restrictions on trade with Cuba. The embargo, which effectively restricts all trade between Cuba and the United States, has lapsed several times, notably under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. On Feb. 11, 1970, at the Kagoshima Space Center in Japan, the Ohsumi, Japan’s first satellite, is successfully launched into an orbit around Earth. The achievement made Japan the world’s fourth space power, after the Soviet Union in 1957, the United States in 1958, and France in 1965. On Feb. 10, 1996, after three hours, world chess champion Garry Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer. Kasparov was ultimately victorious when he bested Deep Blue with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize. On Feb. 12, 2002, former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic goes on trial at The Hague, Netherlands, on charges of genocide and war crimes in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. The trial ended without a verdict when Milosevic was found dead from an apparent heart attack in his prison cell. (c) 2022 Hearst Communications, Inc. All Rights Reserved

CECIL SEAHAWKS CLIMB RANKINGS TO 9TH PHOTOS BY SCOTT SERIO
By Scott Serio
The Cecil College men’s basketball team didn’t put up their best performance of the season Saturday at home against visiting Harford Community College, but it was a much-needed 94-84 win against a regional rival from just across the Susquehanna River. The Seahawks are loaded with talent, thanks
to many exercising an extra year of eligibility due to the coronavirus pandemic, and they continue to put up impressive wins as they look to win their region and return to the big dance in March in Danville, Indiana. Hassan Corbin led Cecil with 29 points and Marlon Lewis posted a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds, but Seahawk Head Coach Ed
Durham pointed to his ability to instantly swap players with like skill sets as one of the reasons for success this season. “That’s one of our strengths, the depth that we have. We have a lot of good players we can interchange,” said Durham, while considering why his roster is so packed. “It’s tough because I feel bad for the kids that lost last year (to COVID). They really shouldn’t be here, they
should be somewhere else. Great for us, but they should be playing at a four-year school.” While his squad didn’t have a clean effort in their 10-point win, Durham felt like the win two weeks ago in New York was a better gauge of what his Seahawks can accomplish when everything falls into place. “Energy and effort. We played Monroe College and we put it togeth-
er that day,” said Durham. “We beat a Division I JuCo team who is very good. If we play like we are capable of, what our expectations are, I like our chances.” Cecil College has a formidable Region XX opponent in Howard Community College coming to play them Wednesday night. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

PROVIDENCE DEFEATS WEST NOTTINGHAM 57-47 Sports returned to West Nottingham Academy on Tuesday after an extended break after Christmas due to Covid precautions. The Rams Fieldhouse hosted the Providence Christian Academy Griffins in a quiet gymnasium due to the current restrictions in place on spectators at West Nottingham. The Rams had their Cheerleaders but it was still an unusual game to watch without the Students of WNA or Providence Parents there to cheer on their teams. Senior Captain Jonathan McAndrews led the Griffins offensively scoring 26 points which is slightly above his average. McAndrews shot 88% from
the free throw line and came up with 8 steals, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists to round out his stat line. Joel Warner was the second leading scorer for the Griffins with 10 points on 57% shooting in only 3 quarters due to an injury that caused him to leave the game. Warner also ripped down 4 rebounds and came up with 3 steals. The Providence Griffins will travel just down the road from their campus to Tri-State Christian Academy on Tuesday Jan 25 to face another division rival, The Tri-State Crusaders. Game time is posted for 5:30pm.

IT’s FATHER KNOWS BEST IN EAGLES VS INDIANS MATCH up
By Margaret McGlothlin
Coach Sandy Grimes of Bohemia Manor High School has coached the boys basketball team since the 2009-2010 season, also coaching girls basketball previously. While his son Seth Grimes has coached North East Boys Basketball for a short period of time compared to his father. Due to COVID these teams have not met since the 2018-2019 season. The Father-Son Coach battle between The Bohemia Manor Eagles and The North East Indians on Tuesday evening resulted in an impressive win for The Eagles. It took a strong defensive battle to determine the winner of the game, with Bohemia Manor gaining a 14-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Eagles came into the contest with their starting 6’5 center Jonas
Scott who in total tallied 25 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 blocks. This included three 3-pointers, and multiple 2 pointers with some shots from the foul line. They were also led by junior Jake Vaughan, who had 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals. For North East, Austin Keefer was the leading scorer with 20 points and led his team at the foul line shooting 7-of-8. The Indians shot a total of 10-19 at the free-throw line, along with four 3-pointers as a team throughout the game. Quarter two was started off by the Indians with a pass from #5, Ethan Hasell to Austin Keefer for a layup. The Eagles struggled to pass the basketball but still held together when Scott gathered the rebound and went up for the shot. By the end of the second quarter, the game favored The Eagles 22-14. Early in the third, Luke Keefer gave his team
more confidence shooting a 3-pointer to improve their offense. The battle continued as Senior Gannon Williams of the Eagles and Ethan Hasell for The Indians both shot 3-pointers to tie up the game 27-27 late in the third. With only 6:22 on the clock in the last quarter of the game the score was 31-29, continuing to favor Bohemia Manor. Arcel Ramirez-Mora and Jake Vaughan continued the lead for The Eagles towards the end of the game shooting a 3-pointer each. (40-29, Eagles). A pass to Hasell from Hopkins with nearly 3 minutes left allowed him to put up a shot from far out, but they couldn't come back as The Eagles secured a win at the nest improving their record. These two Coaches will face off again when the Eagles travel to North East on Feb 11.

INDIANS HOLD OFF TIGERS RALLY FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON By Kevin Phillips
NORTH EAST–North East did a good job in their half court defense in the second and third quarters as they limited host Rising Sun to 18 points in that stretch to help build a double digit lead in UCBAC Susquehanna Division boys’ basketball action Friday night.
The Tigers mounted a rally in the fourth quarter, but the Indians withstood the comeback effort to hold on for a 46-44 victory and earn their first win of the season. “We tried to speed them up. We tried to hit them with the press. They handled it pretty well. Our press wasn’t that effective, and we tried to speed the game
up,” North East head coach Seth Grimes said. “I thought we moved really well as a unit on defense. All five guys were rotating. We tried to pin them to our spots. I think we played some really good half-court team defense.” The Indians struggled in the first quarter as Rising Sun took a 7-4 after eight minutes, but things turned around in the second quarter as North East won the frame 14-10 to take a 1817 lead into halftime.
Continuing their strong play into the third quarter, the Indians outscored the Tigers 17-8 in the frame to increase their lead to 35-25, and one reason for their strong offensive output in the middle two quarters was that they made five three-pointers during the stretch. “We started to take different style threes, not the dribble in threes. We started moving it, swinging it a couple of times, or driving it and
kicking it out,” Grimes said. “We were more in rhythm.” After North East increased its lead to 40-27 early in the fourth quarter, Rising Sun regained its defensive composure and forced turnovers, allowing it to chip aways at its deficit. That improved defense allowed the Tigers to go on a 17-6 run, cutting the Indian lead to 46-44 with 36 seconds remaining in the game. Rising Sun had two chances

to tie the game in the final 36 seconds, but both times, the North East defense held serve to preserve the victory. Ethan Hassell paced the Indians with 15 points while Austin Keefer and Jabez Griffin chipped in 13 and 11 points respectively. Luke Moore scored 19 points while Nate Wood added 12 points for the Tigers, who could not find the consistency needed to pick up the victory. “We just didn’t have
it tonight. We missed a lot of our open shots. We didn’t play that great. We played periods of defense, but credit to (North East), they came out firing and couldn’t keep up,” Rising Sun head coach Scott Lammers said. “We tried at the very end there. I got a couple of players hurt, and I had to make adjustments. We had a shot at the end to tie it at least and didn’t get it. That’s the way ball bounces.”
