Jaimere Guy gets our RMS Male Athlete of the Week for this week following his performance in the State Semifinal Game against Mountain Ridge. Jaimere was a key component to the Panthers on Offense, Defense and Special Teams and ran a kick back 62 yards for a Touchdown to put Perryville’s first points on the board in the game.
This week the Perryville Cheer Squad battled 15 degree wind chills and snow flurries for over 3 hours to keep the Perryville Fans charged up and yelling for the Panthers at the State SemiFinals Football Game. Knowing how cold it would be, they didn’t stay home and got themselves a way to the game to cheer. They stayed with their team until the final game of the season when Cheerleaders don’t usually travel to away games and are very deserving of being named our RMS Athletes of the Week. PERRYVILLE VS MOUNTAIN RIDGE
STATE SEMIFINALS GAME!
The Perryville Panthers bid for a State Championship was forced to go on the road this week for their Semifinals matchup in Allegany County against the Mountain Ridge Miners. Perryville Fans made the trek in huge numbers to Frostburg in part thanks to a Motorcoach provided by Jim Lacey of RE/MAX and the Elmer Family of C and C Roofing LLC. The coach was able to transport the Cheerleaders and 40 Family Members to the game. We estimate at least 100 more made the drive themselves to attend the game. The weather conditions were harsh. The temperature was 24 degrees at gametime and with the howling winds the real feel temp
was 15 degrees but that did not stop the Cheerleaders or the Parents in attendance from making as much noise as they could to encourage their team. The Panthers Team bus pulled out of Perryville High School at 11am with a grand sendoff that included Perryville Fire Department Fire Trucks, a Police Escort and about 50 Fans and Family. The team had a long day ahead to prepare for the game and after a meal at Olive Garden and a stop at another High School to do a Walk thru of the plan for the game they continued to Frostburg. The parent’s bus would pull out from Perryville High 3 hours later for the 3-hour drive loaded with coats and blankets to try to
keep warm. The game started with Mountain Ridge deferring to Perryville and Perryville would get first possession and start from their 30-yard line. Perryville would start their first drive using Senior RB, Jaimere Guy. On 2nd and 9 Jaimere breaks thru the line for a first down, but a 1-yard run and two failed pass attempts later the Panthers are forced to punt to Mountain Ridge who take get the ball at their 14 yard line. Mountain Ridge would waste no time moving the ball running to a first down on their first play. A second run for 4 yards and the Miners would connect on a screen pass for the first Touchdown of the game.
The Miners would go for two following an offsides penalty on the Panthers for the extra point and run the ball into the endzone to give them an 8-0 lead with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter. The Panthers next possession they start at 36-yard line and continue trying to advance down the field with Guy carrying the ball. The Miners hold the Panthers back, not allowing them to gain more than a yard before Perryville would be forced to punt the ball to Mountain Ridge. Mountain Ridge came out quick with a Hook and Ladder play to run 62 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Perryville would draw a penalty again for offsides on the extra point and
the Miners would again go for the two-point conversion and increase their lead to 160. On the ensuing kick the Panthers would show some life as Jaimere Guy’s punt return for a touchdown would get Perryville on the board and following the kick by Zack Clarke the score is 16-7. Perryville’s kick to the Miners would be to the 24-yard line but a block in the back by the Miners would get them a 10-yard penalty and a start on their 14-yard line. The Miners would again quickly march down the field and from Perryville’s 35 a short pass to #23 from Mountain Ridge would run into the endzone while dragging a Perryville player for at least
Tuesday, November 30, 2021 3 yards who was hanging on and unable to bring him down. The kick is good, and the Miners are ahead 23-7 at the end of the first quarter after Perryville fails to make progress on their next possession. The second quarter would continue much of what fans saw in the first quarter. Four minutes into the second quarter the Miners would rush into the endzone from the 38-yard line for a touchdown and following the extra point kick be up 30-7. Perryville’s next possession would be 7 minutes and see numerous penalties called including a 15yard sideline penalty that left many confused as to what happened on the sideline. Jaimere Guy would carry the ball and make some catches to keep the chains moving but a delay of game penalty on the Panthers would put them back to 2nd and 17 from the 42-yard line. A fumble is quickly recovered by Clarke, and it looks as if the Panthers drive will end until a roughing the passer 15-yard penalty by the Miners gives the Panthers an automatic first down and renewed drive. The Miners however would hold the Panthers Offense at the 31-yard line and Perryville turns the ball over on downs. The Miners take over with 3:03 left on the clock in the first half but end up punting back to Perryville after the Panthers Defense are able to prevent another score. Perryville would once again show get into the endzone again after Zack Clarke completes a pass to Senior Daniel Tserkis who runs into the endzone for 6 points. Zack Clarke again makes the
STATE SEMIFINALS GAME extra point, and the score is 30-14. The Panthers faithful on the sidelines are encouraged. With 1:36 on the clock in the first half, the Miners would then lead a 74 second scoring drive into the endzone to end the half 3614. The Miners would get first possession in the second half and continue their dominance in the game keep Zack Clark scrambling and Perryville unable to get back into the endzone. The Miners would score two more time in the first 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter to make the score 50-14 and start a running clock. At this point many realize the game is out of reach for the Panthers to win as the Miners score 2 more touchdowns and end the game 63-14. The Panthers fought a hard game under the worst weather conditions they have had to play in all year. Still, they managed to put 14 points on the board against the strong Mountain Ridge team that has only allowed more than 13 points twice all season. One of times was against Fort Hill High School who defeated the Miners 377. Fort Hill High School will be the team Mountain Ridge will play in the Championship Game this week in Annapolis. It’s been a great season for the Perryville Panthers and they should all hold their head high on their accomplishments this season. They made it to the Semifinals of the State Championship, defeated an undefeated Havre de Grace Team to win the Susky Bowl and finished the season 7-4.
Congratulations Perryville Football on a Great 2021 Season!

ZACH BARBIN WINS GAP WINTER SERIES AT NORTH HILLS COUNTRY CLUB By Andrew Barbin It’s hard to think about golf when the temperature is below zero. It’s even harder to play golf at those temperatures. This past Tuesday, the Golf Association of Philadelphia held one of its several Winter Series tournaments at North Hills Country Club. When Zach and Austin Barbin, Elk Neck resident’s and standout collegiate golfers at #22 Liberty University, teed off on Tuesday, the temperature was an icy 22 degrees. The 20 to 30 mph northern wind only added to the chill, with the RealFeel estimating single digit temperatures. But
despite the miserable conditons, the Barbin bros did what they do best and put on a show. 22-year-old Zach Barbin took first place in a field of 80 golfers, many of which were accomplished club professionals, firing a score of one-under-par 70 in the harsh conditions on a tough course. Zach’s winning round featured back-toback birdies on his final two holes (holes 3 and 4) and an eagle on the 15th hole. Austin Barbin took fourth place with a score of 75, firing four birdies in the process. Unfortunately for the 20-yearold, Austin had three double bogeys, derailing his chanc-
es of winning following a hot streak during the fall college season. This event was Zach Barbin’s first competitive tournament following a shoulder injury in September that sidelined him for the entire fall season. Zach looks to use these winter tune-up tournaments as he prepares to lead Liberty to a NCAA Division I National Title alongside his brother Austin on a stacked squad featuring the #6 and #25 golfers in the country in Kieran Vincent and Jon Yaun, as well as transfer student Austin Duncan who was ranked #2 in Division II in 2020-2021.
