MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

NOAH WALLACE North East Sophomore Noah Wallace had an impressive week on the Golf Course. Wallace led the North East Team to victory in the Susquehanna Division Championships on Tuesday in an upset victory over the presumed favorite Rising Sun. On Thursday, Wallace competed in the District 7 Championships where he scored a one-over-par 73 to be the first Cecil County Golfer to win the District 7 Championship in over a decade. Wallace is now qualified for the State Championships where he is the clear favorite and a chance to be the first Cecil County golfer to ever win the State Title.

FEMALE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

BOHEMIA MANOR VOLLEYBALL TEAM This week the Bohemia Manor Volleyball Team had their backs against a wall. They have had an amazing first half of their season going 6-0, defeating most of their opponents in 3 sets, and looking like contenders for a State Championship. However the Team was tested this week when they faced one of their toughest opponents on the schedule, Rising Sun. Without their Head Coach, Libero and Middle Hitter the Bohemia Manor Team battled through 5 sets for the first time this season to get the win and protect their undefeated record. It took a Total Team Effort, working together to pull out the win in one of the best Volleyball games we have ever seen.

zone twice on 8 carries for 69 yards. Brandon Turner added a rushing touchdown while Matt Racine and Brown also scored two point conversions. Defensively, the Elks held North East to one first down in the first half. Jaiden Hicks added a defensive score with a scoop and score. Sophomore Kyle Jackson took an onside kick back for a touchdown to start the second half for the Golden Elks.Elkton moves to 4-2 on the year and are on the road at CM Wright this week.

EAGLES DEFENSE HOLDS BACK MUSTANGS AT GOAL LINE FOR THE WIN

It was a Homecoming game the Eagles won’t soon forget as they secured their third win of the season against C.M. Wright on the back of a goal line stand. With the Eagles ahead 26-21, the Mustangs’ final drive began after a blocked punt. A quarterback scramble and defensive pass interference brought C.M. Wright down to the 8 yard line with first down and goal to go with roughly one minute left. On first down, the Eagles’ defense stepped up big to stop the run and Tyler Losten recorded a tackle for loss. On second down, C.W. Wright went to the air with a flood concept that Bo defended well, forcing a quarterback scramble stopped at

the 4 yard line. C.M. Wright dropped back to pass on third down and a gang of Bo Manor defenders made the stop, again led by Losten who made the initial hit to send the quarterback diving for the endzone, only to be stopped short at the one yard line. On fourth down and goal, the Mustangs tried a power run up the middle which was denied by the entire defensive line anchoring down, linebacker Jon Jon Baglio filling downhill hard, and Jake Koehler blitzing off the edge from his free safety position to make the stop short of the goal line. Zack Galasso forced 2 fumbles, Losten recorded a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and both Nate

Fleming and Matthew Nichols snagged interceptions to round out the defensive effort. Offensively, the Eagles were led through the air by Angel Granado who passed for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns. Losten hauled in 6 catches for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Fleming reeled in a 36 yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 19-14 lead at halftime which they never relinquished. Koehler contributed 2 catches for 21 yards, while Nichols grabbed one catch for six yards. Granado, Losten, and Nichols led the Eagles rushing attack. The Eagles visit the Rising Sun Tigers on Thursday, October 14th.

By Megan Steimer The Bohemia Manor Eagles faced obstacles last Tuesday which they hadn’t experienced yet this season; play a game five and do so without their head coach along with two starters. The match up against county rival Rising Sun Tigers was exhilarating. It came down to the last few points for a winner to be determined, but the Eagles came away with a 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, 2325, 15-13 win to save their undefeated season. The score stayed tight early in game one until the Eagles Simone Mattucci went on a service run to put her team ahead 18-10. The Tigers didn’t let an eightpoint deficit stop them as they began to find holes in a Bo Manor defense, including two tips by Cassidy Dolan which found the floor on the Eagle’s side. Rising Sun would win a close game one and jump to an early 7-4 lead in game two. The thought of going down 0-2 in a match must have stirred the Eagles offense as Mattucci unleashed four kills while freshman Hadlee Hamm served three aces to give Bo Manor a 12-8 lead. Despite two significant blocks from Tigers Anna Carder, the Eagles would go on to win game two as captain Margaret McGlothlin stepped up to not only run the offense but tally several kills as well. “We definitely came back and cleaned some stuff up in the second set” McGlothlin noted. The Eagles would squeak by with a 26-24 win

in set three, but it was evident that a simple bump, set, spike was not going to create points for either team— both Bo Manor and Rising Sun had to get creative. Players were demonstrating how ball placement could be so imperative in a match that saw 13 lead changes just in the third set alone. Nevertheless, both offenses came alive in game four as five different players recorded kills for the Eagles while four players registered kills for the Tigers. It was a block by Carder, however, that locked in a game four victory for Rising Sun. With the match tied at 2-2, the Tigers were looking to carry the momentum over to game five and take home the win. Bo Manor led 13-8 in game five with McGlothlin repeatedly finding her hitters to make plays but as demonstrated throughout the match, no lead is a safe one. At 14-10 it was a makeor-break moment— a serving error gave Rising Sun the ball as both Courtney Mettee and Carolyn Dutterer tallied kills to put their team within two points of the win but ultimately, Bo Manor was able to hang on to capture game five along with the match. An astounding 183 digs were recorded between the two teams along with 71 kills. For Rising Sun, a versatile Anna Carder led all around with 10 kills, six blocks, six digs, two aces, and 14 assists followed by Katelyn Norman-Wilson with a team high 23 digs to go with her three kills and two aces. Courtney Mattee paced the offense with eight kills, two

blocks and eight digs while Mollee Fraker tallied seven kills, 14 digs, and three aces for the Tigers. Leading a Bo Manor defense was senior Emily Sample with a match high 33 digs followed by Olivia McCraw with 25 digs to go with her five kills while Hadlee Hamm finished the night with 20 digs and six aces. For the offense, Margaret McGlothlin had another solid performance, dishing out 28 assists along with 14 kills and 21 digs while Simone Mattucci stepped up big to record a match high 18 kills, five digs and seven

aces for the Eagles. “We had to really work on communication this week because we’re literally missing our coach, our libero and our middle hitter” Mattucci explained when asked what kind of adjustments were being made in preparation for this match. Look for the Eagles to continue their winning streak when they travel to C. Milton Wright Tuesday, October 12th while the Tigers seek a win as they head to Bel Air that same day.

THE PINK GAME PHOTOS BY JACKI TAYLOR

NORTH EAST

VS

BOHEMIA MANOR

By Kevin Phillips

NORTH EAST--After controlling possession for most of the first half, North East found itself trailing by a goal coming out of halftime in its UCBAC Susquehanna Division girls’ soccer contest against visiting Bohemia Manor. The Indians adjusted its formation a bit to add more pressure, and it paid off with a pair of Katy Hammer goals in the second half en route to defeating the Eagles 2-1 in the annual Pink Game between the squads Thursday night. “We increased pressure in the middle of the field and focused on playing the ball up field a little bit more. Our defense was holding steady, so I was comfortable with doing that,” North East head coach Tom Decker said. Even though North East controlled the tempo for much of the game up until that point, Bo Manor who scored first in the game’s 35th minute when Briana Poullard won a footrace to a loose ball and flicked it into the net. The Indians adjusted its offensive formation to pressure whomever possessed the ball for the second half, which paid off as they created more chances with possession than they had in the first half. Eventually, North East earned a free kick in the sixth minute of the sec-

ond half after a handball, and Hammer took the kick and rocketed a shot over the goalkeeper’s hand into the net to tie the game at 1-1. “We changed formations, and I think the team was playing a lot faster and playing with more energy. That was a good thing,” Hammer said of the Indians’ quick start to the second half. The Indians continued to apply pressure and took a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute when Hammer won a 50/50 ball on a Sarah Jones cross and kicked the ball into the net. “I saw Sophie Schleffer make the run out, and I saw the gap right in front of the goal. (Jones) played it perfectly right there for me,” Hammer said as she

described her second goal. The Eagles tried to get the equalizer in the game’s final 20 minutes, but the North East defense stymied any scoring chance to help the Indians hold on to the victory. The annual Pink Game is a special game for both Bo Manor and North East, and both teams brought high energy throughout the game because of the meaning it brings, which is about Breast Cancer awareness. “There's energy that starts with this game just being Bo Manor-North East then it’s the Pink Game on top of it then we threw senior night on top of that. There was a lot of energy from the players in this game.”

NOAH WALLACE WINS DISTRICT 7 CHAMPIONSHIP By Andrew Barbin

It’s not often highly-touted athletes live up to the hype and expectations. And it’s especially rare for them to dominate in their first year. In a county where golf talent is budding, there is one name that is flourishing and leading this new wave of young golfers. North East sophomore Noah Wallace has not only met the expectations had for him, but shattered them this week with one of the most dominant playoff performances in county history. It started with the Susquehanna Division championships on Tuesday, in which Wallace led North East to a staggering upset victory over Rising Sun and Perryville. Wallace’s 39 at the front 9 at Furnace Bay was the best score in the tournament by 7 strokes.

This performance concluded Wallace’s 9 hole season in which he averaged 38.4 in his five 9-hole rounds – the best average in the county by nearly 7 strokes. Fast forward to the District 7 Championships on Thursday, featuring powerhouses such as C. Milton Wright, North Harford, Patterson Mill, Fallston, and Rising Sun, and Wallace had an even more impressive showing. Wallace fired a one-over-par 73 to finish four shots clear of North Harford’s Zachary Wilcox and Patterson Mill’s Brandon Palen for medalist honors. Wallace’s round could have been even better, as he was three-under par through 14 holes, before giving back a few shots to the field on the treacherous 15th hole at Mountain Branch. Nevertheless, Wallace becomes the first Cecil County golfer

to win the District 7 Championship in over a decade, and he has a great shot at being the first Cecil County golfer ever to win the Maryland High School State Championship. Wallace’s overall high school average of 37.8 completes a phenomenal season for Wallace, who also won three times on the Philadelphia Junior Tour (including a win on Monday), with six runner-ups, five third place finishes, and nineteen top-10s. Wallace also notably took 13th in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at Doral. While he’s already at the top of the District, Wallace is just getting started. Combining natural ability with a rigorous practice routine and insatiable drive to be the best, Noah Wallace is a golfer we’ll be following for a long, long time.

AUSTIN BARBIN NAMED ASUN CONFERENCE

GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Following a fourthplace finish earlier this week at the Hamptons Intercollegiate, Liberty University’s Austin Barbin has been named the ASUN Men’s Golfer of the Week. Barbin fired an even par 216 (7370-73) at the Loyola-Maryland hosted event, held at the Maidstone Club (par 72, 6,742 yards) in East Hampton, N.Y. In just his second event since transferring to Liberty from Maryland, Barbin led the 72-man field in par-3 scoring (2.83 scor-

ing average) and ranked third in par-5 scoring (4.42 scoring average). The native of Elkton, Md., helped No. 22 Liberty to a fourth-place finished in a 12-team field, which included No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 42 Northwestern and No. 57 Duke. Barbin at one point was in solo first place at the start of the third round, but couldn’t string together enough birdies to keep up with Virginia’s Chris Fosdick, who won the event at 7-under after posting a final round 67.

RISING SUN LOW CECIL COUNTY TEAM AT DISTRICT 7 CHAMPIONSHIPS

While Noah Wallace stole the show at the District 7 Championships, the Rising Sun Tigers bounced back from a disappointing finish at the Divisional Championship to take fifth overall. With a young core that’s improving rapidly, this was a big step forward for the young Tigers squad as they look to make a run at States next season. Ben Adams had the second best score in the county with his 86, good enough for a top 10 finish and

6-strokes away from making it to the state championship. Tyler Hogue rebounded after a nightmarish start to his round to finish T-14 with his score of 90. Tim Dobrowolski (96), Bradley Dietz (105), and Jake Eckman (110) rounded out scoring for a 377. North East (394 total) finished second in the county and 7th overall, followed by Perryville (396), Bohemia Manor (413), and Havre de Grace (417).

NORTH EAST STUNS SUSQUEHANNA IN UPSET WIN AT DIVISIONALS

By Andrew Barbin

While golf is typically thought of as an individual game, great coaching can go a long way when it comes to team golf. And while North East High School boasts the best golfer in District 7 in Noah Wallace, Coach Seth Grimes was instrumental in leading North East High School to a huge upset win over Rising Sun and Perryville at the Susquehanna Division Championship. While most of the golfers in the county are familiar with Furnace Bay’s back 9, in which most matches against Perryville are played, the front 9 is played rarely at the high school level. Coach Grimes was prepared for this possibility and made a detailed strategy guide for each golfer to help them navigate Furnace Bay’s unique layout. This preparation

gave North East the edge, and gave them some unlikely heroes. Noah Wallace was medalist by 7 strokes after shooting 39, but the big story was the 46 shot by Reese Swartout – who shot his career best when his team needed him most. Swartout’s 46 was the second best score of the 40 player field, and was followed by Brandon Kristovich’s 48 and Lance Richardson’s 49 – both of which were top-10 scores. The fifth score to count was Ethan Moyer’s 57, and while that was uncharacteristically high for North East’s #4 golfer, their team total of 239 helped North East take the title. Despite beating North East twice in regular season play and being undefeated in the Susquehanna Division, Rising Sun took third place – a disappointing finish on what was a great

campaign. A 46 from Bradley Dietz and 47s from Ben Adams and Tyler Hogue paced the Tigers, followed by a 50 from Tim Dobrowolski and matching 56s from Jake Eckman and Anthony Hartsoe. Whereas depth was normally Rising Sun’s greatest advantage, all six golfers shot on average 3 strokes higher than their season averages. That 15 strokes ultimately was the difference maker, as their 246 fell 7 strokes short of moving up to the Chesapeake division. Perryville had a good run as well, finishing two shot over Rising Sun and four back of the Indians with their score of 244. Andrew Kidd fired a 47 to set the pace and was followed by a trio of 49s from Ronnie Kidd, Jared Eldreth, and Lucas Umbarger. Nick Lepore and Jacob Tabor rounded out scoring with a 50 and 52.

CECIL COLLEGE

CECIL COLLEGE SOFTBALL

RETURNS AFTER 3 YEAR HIATUS

What excitement seeing Cecil College Softball back on the diamond! Cecil College hasn’t fielded a team since April of 2018, but you would never have known it. Thursday’s Double Header debut against Harford Community College showcased several positives. Although the team did not get the win in either game, it was a major step forward for Cecil Athletics as the College gets their teams back on the field post-covid shutdowns. “The team never gave up. They gelled as a team and grew as a unit. The girls displayed perseverance.“ said Coach Mengel. The tenacity and determination that entailed was noteworthy. In the circle was Andrea Johnson who stayed strong throughout her outing.

Her work ethic and mental toughness were impeccable as she threw over 100 pitches in the game. In addition, AJ proved to be strong offensively as well, rounding the bases as she hit a solo inside the park homerun. Also in the circle and remaining strong was Iyana Jurry and Natalie Cook, both equally strong at the position showing both their velocity and movement of the ball. The leadership qualities of Rachel Durham was significant, for this leadership kept the team’s momentum moving forward. Durham made several great plays at Short Stop and showed an impressive arm when she threw from shallow left field to home plate. Behind the plate was Sam Jakubac whose strong arm and quick footwork made

the difference during the game and playing first base was Taylore Brown whose quick reflexes proved to be vital. The outfield, which consisted of Alyssa Jezyk, Alli Borchardt, Ally Ables and Emia Gatewood showcased their strong arms, their quick speed, and their ability to effectively read fly balls. The Seahawks showed they have some good talent on the new team and under the guidance of Coach Mengel should be polished and ready for a full season in the Spring. “Overall the team had an amazing outing, and we are extremely proud of them.” said Coach Vicki Mengel.
