RMS MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

JAYDEN TRIPLETT - EHS The Elkton Golden Elks lost Senior RB Ian Brown in the first quarter to an ankle sprain in their game this week on the road at C. Milton Wright. Senior Jayden Triplett, playing at Quarterback, put the team on his back and had close to 400 yards of offense. Jayden had 27 rushes for an amazing 252 yards scoing 1 TD and one 2 pt conversion. Jayden was just as impressive on passing with 144 yards passing on 7/16 scoring 1 TD and one 2 pt conversion. Jayden did this all while the Golden Elks were down 3 starters on their Offensive Line. The Golden Elks defeated the C. Milton Wright Mustangs 30-20.

RMS FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

RACHEL TAYLOR - RSHS Rising Sun Senior Rachel Taylor was a force to be reckoned with as she held down the defense for the Tigers. Rachel played in both overtime periods, making many key stops as Patterson Mill tried to get into the Tiger’s defensive end. She showed true Tiger resilience in the 1 v 1 overtime period when she scored the Tiger’s winning goal with a beautiful lifted shot after a rebound from the Patterson Mill goalkeeper.

INDIANS HEADED BACK TO NORTH EAST FOR FINAL TWO GAMES

HOMECOMING WEEK AND SENIOR NIGHT NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE TO END THE REGULAR SEASON The North East Indians traveled to Havre de Grace this week in their final road game of the regular season to face a Warriors squad that has dominated every opponent they have faced this year. Only three teams have scored against the Warriors this year and none more than six points. The Indians played

hard but a few mistakes and turnovers gave the Warriors opportunities to get some easy points. North East Seniors Connor Keen, Andrew Kosinski, and Joe Funk all had some great plays in the game with Kosinski even making it into the endzone for a touchdown at the end of the first half. That play would be called

back on a penalty and the half ended with Havre de Grace leading 28-0. The Indians return home this week for Homecoming Week to face Patterson Mill that is 2-5 for

the season. Patterson Mill defested Perryville this week 44-26 but previously have not been able to get more than 15 points in their 5 losses. North East sched-

ule could be favorable to them in their last two games against the 2-5 Huskies and the Season finale on Oct 29th against a 1-6 Rising Sun Tigers.

LATE TIGERS RALLY RUNS OUT OF TIME IN HOMECOMING LOSS By Kevin Phillips

CALVERT-- Bohemia Manor ran just nine offensive plays in the second and third quarters as Rising Sun used clock killing drives to keep the Eagles’ dynamic offense off the field. Bo Manor made the most of those limited snaps as they scored 28 points in the middle two quarters to jump out to a 25-point lead before holding off a late Tiger rally to earn a 35-32 victory in UCBAC football action Thursday night. “We have great players and, also, great coaching by Coach (Jason) Zang over there,” Eagle head coach Vincent Ricci said of his team’s offensive efficiency. “Jake Koehler and Tyler Lotsen made great catches and did the rest. We also got pretty good blocking down

the field as well.” The score was knotted at 7-7 through 12 minutes after Losten caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Angel Granado with 26 seconds left in the first quarter, and Rising Sun proceeded to control the ball for the game’s next 24 plays. In the middle of that ball dominance, Bo Manor took the lead when Lotsen made a mid-play adjustment to intercept a pass and return it 50 yards for a touchdown to make the score 14-7 with 6:51 left in the second quarter. “My first mindset was get to the quarterback, but then, I see our d-end crashing hard. I saw the quarterback getting ready to throw, so I backed up. He fired it right to me,” Lotsen said. After the Tigers went

on a long drive that resulted in a 33-yard field goal from Gannon Russel to make it 14-10 with 1:16 left in the second quarter, the Eagles broke the game open with two touchdowns in 14 seconds. Facing a 4th and 8 at the Rising Sun 28, Granado connected with Jake Koehler in the endzone for a touchdown to increase Bo Manor’s lead to 21-10 with 19.9 seconds left in the second quarter.

After a squib kick went out of bounds, the Eagles were forced to rekick, and they tried the squib kick again, which they recovered at the Tiger 40. On the ensuing play, Granado connected with Lotsen again for a 40-yard touchdown that increased Bo Manor’s lead to 28-10. “We ran a fake, and I saw the safety high. I put it in there between the safety and corner. (Losten) made a move and scored along the sideline,” Granado said of the touchdown right before halftime. After getting the ball to start the third quarter, Ris-

ing Sun marched down the field to the opposing 30, but the Eagles stopped the Tigers on downs to get the ball back for their offense. Two plays later, Bo Manor added to its lead when Granado broke free for a 58-yard touchdown to make it 35-10 with 7:19 left in the third quarter, and that touchdown was the Eagles’ fifth of 20 yards or more. “We were thinking on the fly and making our move on the fly. We played as a team. We played as a family. We were all clicking, playing in sync, and reading it,” Granado said of his team’s big play ability. Rising Sun mounted a furious rally with Russel scoring three of his four

touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cut its deficit to 3532 with 4:37 remaining in the game. After recovering the onside kick, Bo Manor went on its longest drive of the game, taking the final 4:37 off the clock to hold on to the win. “That’s what I told the guys after the game. The second half was rough for us at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth quarter. The o-line stepped up, and we were able to get a couple of first downs. On the last play, we only needed to run three seconds,” Ricci said of the last drive. “The offensive line stepped up big time.”

BOYD MARTIN WINS MARYLAND 5 STAR AT FAIR HILL

PHOTOS BY SCOTT SERIO

After a weekend of postulating that the title for the Inaugural Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill would go across the pond to Great Britain’s Oliver Townend, it turned out the crown would only go up the road a few miles to Cochranville-based, Australian transplant Boyd Martin. The win would be Martin’s first at the sport of three-day eventing’s penultimate difficulty level. His first four-star win was in Australia, but this win in the five-star was in front of a crowd in Cecil County. For the county, it was a splashy event that drew

thousands of fans to the rolling landscape in the top part of the county in a area known for horses, horse trails and horse competitions. By all accounts from attendees, the event was a huge success. “Cecil County shined during the Maryland 5 star. It was great to see so many local Rising Sun businesses represented. Buying and supporting local is how we are going to continue to grow our economy in Rising Sun and Cecil County.” said Rising Sun Mayor, Travis Marion.

MANOLESCU & HOGAN WIN 2021 CHESAPEAKE LEAGUE

By Andrew Barbin

Chesapeake League rookies Bob Manolescu and Rick Hogan topped off their excellent debut season with a huge win over Tom Vincenti and Tim Taylor in the finals. Manolescu and Hogan were nearly wire to wire the #1 overall seed through the 20-week regular season, and continued their winning

through the playoffs taking down the teams of Mark Thompson and Justin Eldreth, Joe Gaskill and Dave Gaskill, and Doug Phillips and Rick Speed en route to their title match against the red-hot team of Tom Vincenti and Tim Taylor. Doug Phillips, with Rick Speed out of the lineup due to injury, took down Roger Keane and John Van Fossen in the third-place match

with an outstanding score of 38 for a net 32. On the consolation bracket, Mark McCoy, also missing his partner Doug Barry, took down Joe Ferdinando and Ryan Jackson in the finals with a 37 for 32 of his own. Frank Hill and Doug Bolton won on a walkoff over Andrew Barbin Jr and Mike Nelles when Frank drained a par putt from the back bunker on hole #9 to come from behind and win

the match. The Chesapeake League, ran and hosted by Chesapeake Bay Golf Club, is a 9-hole league played on Thursday Nights (starting at 5:30pm). The 2021 season was the biggest turnout by far, with 64 golfers (32 teams) teeing it up over a 20-week regular season and 4-week playoff. With gross and net skin pots, proximity contests, random drawings,

quarterly and seasonal payouts, and a Calcutta during the playoffs – the Chesapeake League gave out nearly $16,000 in prize money (mostly cash, some gift cards). Next year’s league will begin April 7th, 2022 and will have an 18-week regular season ending August 4th, and a 4-week playoff ending September 1st.

RISING SUN FALLS SHORT OF PATTERSON MILL, WINS OVER EDGEWOOD AND JOPPATOWNE

By Andrew Barbin

On Tuesday, October 12th the Rising Sun Tigers played their last regular season match for the season against Patterson Mill, Edgewood, and Joppatowne at Winter’s Run CC. Despite a team season low score of 225, they still could not quite keep up with the Huskies’ score of 215. They did howev-

er win big over Edgewood and Joppatowne to finish their 2021 campaign at 11-6 overall and 9-0 in the Susquehanna division. Ben Adams shot his season low score to lead the Tigers with a great score of 40, finishing one back of Patterson Mill’s John Harrison’s medaling score of 39. Adams was followed up by Tyler Hogue, who shot his season best

score of 41. Hogue notably had no scores worse than a bogey in his 5-over finish. Rounding out the scoring was Tim Dobrowolski’s 46, Bradley Dietz’s 47, and a 51 from Johnny Waldridge. Rising Sun looks to get past their disappointing finish at the divisional championship, and improve upon their solid showing at the district championships as they take down

the other county teams at Back Creek on Thursday at the County Championships. The Tigers will look to take down Noah Wallace and the rest of the North East Indians in the rematch they’ve been waiting two weeks for. Perryville will look to stage an upset of their own after close finishes with both North East and Rising Sun at the previous two championships.

Elkton digs deep, wins in 5 sets over North East for 7th in a row

By Megan Steimer

Elkton entered Monday night’s match on a sixgame winning streak, including two game five victories in their previous two contests. When it became evident the match against county rival North East Indians was heading in that same direction, the Elks were prepared as they came out on top 2523, 19-25, 23-25, 25-18, 1510 to defeat a tough North East team and win their seventh game in a row. The first set saw several unforced errors as both Elkton and North East tried to find their rhythm and develop plays, but the North East offense came alive in game two. Anna Breneman stepped up to knock in four kills and tie the match at 1-1 for the Indians who ended the game on a seven-point

service run. By game three the volleys became longer and more intense, the plays were more strategic, and the match was overall livelier. Both Delaney and Shelby Donaldson recorded aces for North East, including backto-back aces for Shelby Donaldson to put her team ahead 22-20. With the game on the line, Elkton’s Emily Bonson made a smart play, tipping the ball over to the Indian’s side for a kill and giving the Elks a chance for a comeback, however North East held on to win game three. Shelby Donaldson continued her impeccable serving in game four, dishing out three aces in a row as the Indians jumped to a 3-0 lead. A characteristically energetic Elkton team became unusually quiet as they faced a gut-check. Down 15-13, Elks’ head coach Kim Brown

called a timeout to get her team back in gear. A North East hitting error gave Elkton the ball and the opportunity to prove a comeback was again possible. Both Kendall Gitau and Hanna Workman went on service runs to give the Elks a 22-16 lead and soon after, the win to tie the match. With their winning streak again on the line, Elkton entered a familiar game five situation. At one point, the Elks were up 10-4 and looked to run away with the victory before North East came within a point to tie the game. Bonson made sure the comeback was short lived as she tallied three significant kills late in the game, giving the Elks momentum to capture game five and the match. “I think we did really well tonight. It was tough, but we pulled through” said

Bonson, who finished with five kills on the night. Mikayla Jefferson led the Elks with 12 assists, two kills and three aces while Hanna Workman tallied five kills and two aces. Autumn Simpson led the defense with 7 digs to go with Ainsley Jackson’s four digs and three aces. Jackie Marison had a stellar night on offense for the Indians with six kills and two aces while Delaney Donaldson and Emily Mullins each tallied four kills and Shelby Donaldson had four assists to go with her ten aces. Elkton has since gone on to win two more matches for nine wins in a row. Look for the Elks to host Edgewood Tuesday, October 19th while North East hosts Havre de Grace on Monday, October 18th.

WEST NOTTINGHAM ACADEMY WINS HOMECOMING THRILLER OVER PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN

West Nottingham Academy celebrated Homecoming this past weekend and hosted the Providence Christian Academy Varsity Volleyball Team. The West Nottingham Rams won the first set 25-22 but the Lady Griffins from Providence showed they were not to be taken lightly. West Nottingham would again win in the second set by a score of 25-19 giving the Rams a two game lead in the best of five series. The Griffins would rally back in the third set and get their first win of the contest. A win by Providence in the fourth set 25-20 would take the game into a fifth set to determine the winner. West Nottingham won the fifth set 16-14 to get the hard fought victory over a very competitive Providence Christian Academy.

LITTLE LEAGUE DISTRICT 5

ALEXIS ARCE When I knew I was going to be a mom for the first time I was very happy. At two and a half months I felt your first kick so I knew that you were going to be a great soccer player. The years passed and I saw you play for the first time at the age of 3. You were called the star player on the team you played with in Mexico. I am the happiest mom seeing you play and continue to shine. I know that you will go very far and become someone in life. Congratulations for being a Senior and to the whole team for always giving their best efforts on the field. I wish nothing but the best to the team. Love, Mom

We are so proud of the man you’ve become on and off the field. It’s been amazing to see your transformation over the years from playing at a very early age to becoming an impressive athlete. We have so many great memories watching you play over the years, and have enjoyed every moment of it!

We have loved watching you grow from the smallest, scrappiest little guy on the field to the talented young man you’ve become. We are so proud of your accomplishments on and off of the field. We’ll always cherish our soccer family memories, and we look forward to making more memories as you begin your college soccer career. Congratulations to all of the Rising Sun High Seniors. Go Tigers!

CONOR NAJERA

Love, Mom & Dad

We are extremely proud of you. You have blessed us with such joy watching your successes in life and on the field. Over the years we’ve had early mornings, travelled hundreds of miles, slept in countless hotel rooms, and seen way too many soccer fields...but nothing will ever amount to the memories and time we spent together. Congratulations on your Senior Season.
