PERRYVILLE SENIOR NIGHT WIN OVER NORTH EAST 33-16

By Shawn Huth

On a chilly night in Perryville, the clash between county rivals North East and Perryville ensued. It was Perryville’s senior night, and the stands were filled with pink because it was also their pink out game. North East came into the game, hoping to achieve their first win of the season, while Perryville was looking to continue to beat their county opponents. The game started out with a punt, a fumble from Perryville, and then a missed field goal from North East. Perryville made North East pay for their miss and Daniel Tserkis caught a dart across the middle of the field for an 80 yard touchdown pass. Daniel Tserkis has been a monster this season

and is continuing to put up amazing numbers. The extra point was good and this was only the start to Perryville’s offensive domination. On their next drive, Perryville quarterback Zack Clarke showed his amazing elusiveness during an 11 yard scramble. Then he found Zach Ayers who showed his electric speed on a 35 yard touchdown pass. The rest of the half showed no more scoring, and North East could not muster up any offense to compete with Perryville. Some highlights on the next couple drives included solid rushes by Joe Funk of North East and an amazing 22 yard catch by Daniel Tserkis overtop his defender. After halftime, Perryville started their drive with

a 3 and out but faked the punt in order to have a big gain from Tayvin Griffin. Perryville could not convert on fourth and gave the ball to North East. North East had a chance to score, but quarterback Nathan Patterson missed a wide open receiver who could’ve had a massive gain. Another bad throw led to a ball placed right into Daniel Tserkis hands for an interception. Within the next couple plays Jamiere Guy showed his incredible speed on a 67 yard rushing touchdown. Perryville was already up by 20. The North East run game finally started to work when Joe Funk single handedly drove his team down the field. But, Nathan Patterson threw another interception right into the hands of

Caedon Kestner who had an excellent defensive performance. Perryville switched quarterbacks to Jayden Griffin and he instantly found a wide open Jamiere Guy for a 68 yard receiving touchdown. Jayden delivered a great throw while being sacked for the touchdown. North East finally would get onto the scoreboard in the fourth quarter on a screen pass to wide receiver Andrew Kosinski for a 51 yard touchdown. The score changed to 26-8. Following a punt, North East looked to bring the game even closer, but Nathan Patterson threw another interception. Zach Ayers made an amazing play, catching the ball and overpowering wide receiver Andrew Kosinski who is at

least 6 inches taller than him. The next points were two drives later following a North East fumble when Perryville running back Jamiere Guy ran a touchdown in from one yard out. North East scored on the next drive after a 58 yard rush from Greg Kirby for 58 yards and Joe Funke punched it in for a touchdown. The final score would be Perryville 33 North East 16. Next week, Perryville will travel to Edgewood for a very tough battle to keep their win streak alive. North East will travel to Elkton for a tough game to try to have a number in the win column.

The Elkton Elks won their fourth game in a row Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Havre de Grace Warriors 25-23, 25-15, 25-21 and improving to an overall record of 4-2 this season. Despite a close first game, the Elks capitalized on ball possession, registering 10 kills and 14 aces— two of which ended game one and two. The first set did not begin how Elkton intended. Down 1-5, setter Mikayla Jefferson found hitters Myaven Ewing and Emily Bonson who combined, unleashed three kills, waking the offense up and giving the Elks an 8-7 lead. Behind a short service run by Autumn Simpson, Elkton went up 12-8 before the Warriors battled back to take a 17-16 lead. “We needed to come together,” Jefferson said, “we needed to start playing as a team instead of as individuals.” It was then the roles reversed as Ewing found the ball and set it to Jefferson who made the kill, tying the score 17-17 and demonstrating the versatility of an Elkton offense. A couple of extensive volleys transpired— each point more valuable than the last as the Elks closed out game one, ending it with a Hanna Workman ace.

Workman carried over her efficient serving, tallying four aces in game two as the Elks began to find their groove. Elkton was up 20-12 at one point and had no plans to look back as they put on a dominate performance to win the second set. Jefferson helped the Elks to an early 4-0 lead in game three, including a play where she strategically placed the ball deep on Havre de Grace’s side, just out of reach for a return. But the Warriors were able to answer this time as they rallied back and took a 16-13 lead over the Elks. “We started to play down to the other team” Workman observed. With the score tied 21-21, Elkton coach Kim Brown took a necessary timeout to give her team a breather— soon after sophomore Kendall Gitau stepped up to the service line and secured the final four points, helping her team to a 3-0 match win. Hanna Workman finished the night with five kills, two blocks and five aces while Mikayla Jefferson dished out ten assists to go with her two digs and three aces. Although the Elks came away with a win, the team is not about to settle with their performance, “while we did win, I think we’re a whole lot better then how we played tonight,” said Workman.

EVAN BARBIN FINISHES T-6TH IN THE 115th MIDDLE ATLANTIC AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Evan Barbin of Elkton, MD had a solid showing in the 115th Middle Atlantic Amateur Championship this weekend, shooting 6974-72 for a three-day total of 215 at Baltimore Country Club. The rising senior out of Red Lion Christian Academy (Bear, DE) was the leader in the clubhouse after his first round, and despite some troubles late in his second round, managed to hold second place at one point in the final round. His 6th place finish out of 122 qualifying golfers is another solid finish to what has been a strong season for Barbin, who qualifed to play in the 73rd U.S. Junior Amateur at the Country Club of North Carolina as well as the nationally televised Notah Begay III Junior Golf

Championship last November. The youngest Barbin brother also notched several victories this season, winning the Delaware Boy’s High School State Championship, the U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier at Doylestown, the Philadelphia Open qualifier at 1912 Club, Philadelphia Amateur Qualifier at Running Deer, the Philadelphia PGA Junior Qualifier, among both Philadelphia Junior Tour events he played in this year. Evan also had top 10 finishes at the Maryland Junior Amateur, the Pennsylvania Junior Amateur, the Delaware Junior Amateur, the GAP’s Christman Cup, the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Bedens Brook, and the Notah Begay Regional at Seaview.

TIGERS COMPLETE COUNTY SWEEP WITH WIN OVER INDIANS

By Kevin Phillips

CALVERT--After a first half in which North East proved to be dangerous on the counter, Rising Sun looked to make adjustments at halftime to limit the chances the visiting Indians had from taking the ball away. Those adjustments proved to be successful as the Tigers prevented the Indians from getting as many counters in the second half, and they got a go-ahead goal late to earn a 2-1 win in UCBAC nondivisional boys’ soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Calvert Regional Park. “I realized their plan was to counterattack, double-teaming our central players, so that opened up our flanks. We moved the ball out wide and attacked from there, but we had to be careful of the counterattack, which they had a good game plan,” Rising Sun head

coach Dylan Aiman said. After the Tigers controlled the tempo in the early minutes, North East launched its first successful counter, which led to a corner kick, and the Indians took advantage of the opportunity when Corey O’Connell scored off a rebound off the crossbar in the seventh minute to make it 1-0. Rising Sun continued to push the action after the North East goal, creating several chances through possession while the Indians created opportunities through the counter, and both teams’ goalies were up to the challenge, stopping several shots each. The Tigers equalized at 1-1 in the 23rd minute when Beckham Aiman rocketed a cross from 20 yards out into the net, and he was a bit surprised the cross was allowed as he heard the ball might have gone out of bounds when it was crossed

to him. “I actually, at first, thought the ball went out because everyone was saying ‘the ball went out’ as it was crossed to me. It went to me,” Beckham Aiman said. “I touched it and went through it with my left and went to the right side of the keeper.” The remainder of the first half played out similarly to early stages of the game as both teams created promising scoring chances, but the ball did not get the ball into the net to keep the score at 1-1. During the halftime break, Dylan Aiman told the Tigers to use a different method to get the ball past the North East pressure and limit the counter’s effectiveness. “We talked at halftime about ‘instead of dribbling through, we need to pass the ball through because they’re trying to steal the ball on the dribble. They

have a hard time defending when we knocked it through.’ So, we passed through, instead of dribbling. That was the difference,” Dylan Aiman said. Those adjustments paid off as Rising Sun broke through the pressure with passes and created several chances, and in the game’s 65th minute, the Tigers took the lead when the ball found the foot of Beckham Aiman, who’s shot found the far side of the net to make it 2-1. The Indians spent the remainder of the game trying to get the equalizer, but the Rising Sun defense held firm and kept North East from establishing any type of attack to hold on to the win and complete a sweep of county teams. “It felt really, really good. Especially at the end because we got the county sweep,” Beckham Aiman said. “They’re a good team, so it felt really good to win.”
