The 0-2 Indians made a change at Quarterback this week and started #1 Blaydon Blake. Blake had over 100 yards passing and approx 50 yards rushing but it wasn’t enough to put points on the board. The Indians drop to 0-3 on the season but are

improving and must now prepare for County Rival, The Bohemia Manor Eagles, who come to North East on Friday for the Indians final home game until Homecoming on October 22. The next three weeks the Indians will face the three Cecil County teams on

PERRYVILLE STARTS FIRST OF THREE AT HOME

PHOTOS BY WAYNE LAMBERT

By Shawn Huth

On a cloudy Friday night, Perryville hosted the Fallston Cougars for their first home game of the season. Perryville looked to achieve their second consecutive win, and Fallston wanted to stay undefeated. Perryville received the ball first and their first drive showed some explosive rushes by running back Jamiere Guy. They were forced to punt and shut down Fallston’s first drive. On the punt from Fallston, Jamiere Guy showed his elusiveness and power for a 40 yard return. Set up with great field position, and with a great play call by Coach Dan Basara, Jayden Griffin found Zack Clarke for a 5 yard touchdown. The point after was blocked and Perryville kicked the ball back off. Fallston’s next possession began with a beautiful pass from their quarterback and a great catch by their receiver number 8. Fallston’s running back capped off the drive with one of his many rushing touchdowns of the night. Perryville stayed silent on their next possession and Fallston returned on offense with a bomb to their receiver, number 80,

who torched through zone coverage. The extra point was good and Fallston increased their lead to 14-6. Trying to fight back, Jamiere Guy ran for a 20 yard rush, but a missed opportunity on a wide open Zach Ayers for a touchdown ended Perryville’s drive. The next couple drives for both teams were slow besides a couple great runs from Jamiere Guy. Perryville looked as if they had some communication errors on offense as they struggled with some pitch plays and with players running into each other at the line of scrimmage. But, with some good blocking by the Perryville offensive line, Jayden Griffin delivered a pass to Jamiere Guy for 30 yards, setting up a 10 yard touchdown rush by Jamiere Guy. The extra point was good and Perryville drew closer to Fallston. Fallston scored once more before the half with a 31 yard rushing touchdown from their quarterback with at least 5 broken tackles. The halftime score was 21-13 Fallston, and Perryville marching band delivered an excellent halftime show highlighting their upcoming school play. For the second

half, Zack Clarke had to step in at quarterback for an injured Jayden Griffin. As well, Jamiere Guy was shaken up and replaced by a running back committee of Trevor David and John Kilby. Fallston received the ball and drove down the field. Even with great defensive plays by defensive end Caedon Kestner, cornerback Kyle Huth, and safety Zack Clarke, Perryville could not stop the run and number 7 walked it in for his second rushing touchdown of the night. The extra point was good and Fallston increased their lead by 15. On the kickoff, Fallston kicked a rocket into a member of Perryville’s front line’s face mask and recovered the kick. Fallston did fumble on their next possession and Perryville drove down the field with great rushes by Trevor David and a great touchdown reception by Daniel Tserkis, who broke 3 tackles to get into the end zone. On the extra point, the snap was skipped, but holder Zach Ayers showed great concentration in getting the hold steady, allowing the extra point to be good. With momentum their way, Perryville kicked the ball off and forced the most clear and obvious fumble ever, but Fallston

was saved from allowing Perryville to have great field position. After a couple 3 and out drives, Fallston running back, number 7, rushes for his third touchdown of the day increasing the score to 3520. Reggie Rhoades had a great spin move on the kick return, but Perryville’s drive began with a fumble by Zack Clarke. Fallston capitalized on the fumble with a 32 yard rushing touchdown by their quarterback who broke 3 tackles. Being 42-20 the game was out of reach for Perryville. Even down, Perryville showed some hope with a great pass downfield from Zack Clarke into the hands of Zach Ayers for 32 yards. Zack Clarke showed excellent mobility in the pocket and delivered a 5 yard touchdown to wide receiver Zach Ayers. The two point try was no good and the score

was 42-26. Fallston looked to run the game out and ran down the field with great runs by each running back. Number 7 capped the drive off with his fourth touchdown and the extra point was good. Fallston’s kicker looked excellent, drilling every one of his attempts on the night. Perryville’s final drive showed a great rush by John Kilby, and a 35 yard reception by Daniel Tserkis, but was finalized by an interception. Fallston knelt the game out and the final was 49-26. Fallston looks to stay undefeated next Friday night with a home game to Patterson Mill. Perryville looks to bounce back against a county opponent in Rising Sun who is also 1-2. Rising Sun is coming off a big win to Patterson Mill and the two teams will meet in Perryville next Friday night.

RISING SUN TIGERS FOOTBALL

Tuesday, September 21, 2021

TIGERS WIN A BIG ONE AT PATTERSON MILL, 48-14 The Rising Sun Tigers traveled to Patterson Mill on Friday looking for their first win of the season. Patterson Mill had just defeated Bohemia Manor a week before and seemed to favor letting their Quarterback keep the ball and run and the Tigers were prepared. The Tigers were first to get on the Scoreboard when Sam Erhart returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown giving his team the early 6-0 lead. The Tigers are unable to get the extra point but have opened the game with everyone fired up and ready to play hard. Patterson Mill would be ineffective against a Tigers defense that was aggressive and ready for a running Quarterback. After failing to march down the field Patterson Mill is forced to kick back to the Tigers and the Rising Sun Offense is back on the field. The Offense proved too much for Patterson Mill to stop as the Tigers kept the ball on the ground handing off mostly to Sophomore Mason Testerman but also giving carries to Jeremy Flowers and Sam Erhart. On the Tigers second possession they

would quickly move down the field with Testerman who would score his first of 4 Touchdowns on the night. The Tigers 2 point conversion is good and gives them a 14 point lead. After another failed attempt by Patterson Mill to move the ball down the field the Tigers have control of the game and the confidence of their coach to go for a 4th and 1 play with Quarterback Gannon Russell keeping the ball to rush for a Tigers First Down. The Tigers move the ball down the field quickly and are up 21-0 with Patterson Mill unable to stop the run game or hold back the Tigers from scoring. With 55 seconds to go in the first half, and the Tigers with the ball, Quarterback Gannon Russell throws high on a pass to the endzone and the Tigers go for a field goal. The Field Goal is no good and the first half comes to an end with the Tigers up 21 and Patterson Mill unable to get on the board. Patterson Mill comes back from the half with first possession but the Tigers Defense forces them to have to turn the ball over on downs at the 49 yard line and bring the

Tigers Offense back on the field. Testerman would once again get the ball and rush for another touchdown putting the Tigers up 28-0 after the extra point is good. Patterson Mill would finally find the endzone when the Quarterback would keep the ball and get thru the Defense to rush for a touchdown and get the Huskies on the board with 3 minutes to go in the Third Quarter. Patterson Mill’s kicker would miss the extra point making the score 28-6. Rising Sun’s next possession would once again see points on the board as Mason Testerman finds the endzone again giving the Tigers a 35-6 lead after the successful kick for the extra point. Patterson Mill gets the ball, and with 2:04 left in the third quarter, a pass to an open receiver would result in a touchdown followed by a 2 point conversion giving the Huskies some hope they could mount a comeback. The score is now 35-14. Sam Erhart would have a great night rushing for 103 yards on 9 carries and put the Tigers in position to score with First

and Goal with 9:08 left in the Fourth Quarter. Testerman rushes for his third Touchdown of the night putting the Tigers up 4114. Patterson Mill on their next possession make a mistake and the ball is high over the Quarterbacks head forcing him to run back for the ball and taking a huge loss of yards. The error puts the Huskes at Third down and 33 yards and they would eventually turn the ball over on downs at the 28 yard line with 7:53 remaining in the game. After a couple

short advances Testerman rushes for 17 yards and puts the ball on the 1 yard line setting up his fourth touchdown of the night on the next play. Patterson Mill would turn the ball over again to the Tigers with 8 seconds remaining and the Tigers kneel the ball to run out the clock. The Tigers head back to Rising Sun with a win over Patterson Mill for the first time since 2015. Final Score Tigers 48, Huskies 14.

Perryville 2-0

Coming off a loss just two days prior, the Perryville Panthers were on the hunt for a win. Behind a stellar performance by senior Kaiva Hicks, the Panthers would go on to beat the North East Indians in straight sets 25-22, 25-23, 25-14 improving their record to 2-1 on the year. The Panthers and Indians appeared evenly matched, coming out focused and energized in set one. While the score was close, Perryville survived with a three-point win, leaving the Indians eager to get back on the court and take game two. Both sides continued to battle, keeping the score close and the volleys long in set two. North East’s Rachel Mullins had back-toback kills, giving the team a momentum swing— resulting in an Indians lead for nearly all of the game where they capitalized on ball possession and opportunities for attacks. pable at the net, tallying five kills to go with Jackie Marison’s two, helping their team to a 23-18 lead. With only two points standing in the way of a tied match, Panthers’ coach Matt Borrelli called a crucial timeout. “We just had to dial-up our focus. We had to pick ourselves up and get ourselves back together” Hicks explained. They did just that— clawing their way back to tie the score 23-23, when another lengthy volley transpired. Neither team would surrender until Hicks found the ball to end the play with a massive kill, swaying the momentum back to Perryville’s side and revitalizing the squad to go on and win game two. Hicks carried that energy over into game three, rattling off a kill and three aces to put the Panthers up 7-1 however the Indians wouldn’t go away so easily. Marison answered with three aces of her own to bring North East within two, but it was not enough. Perryville

took a commanding lead and never looked back, winning game three and the match. Hicks led all hitters with nine kills, six aces, four assists and two digs, while Paige Kilduff dished out 11 assists to go with her four aces and four digs. Gillian Carr had a solid defensive performance totaling nine digs along with five aces and two kills. Both Hicks and Carr were quick to give recognition to their team, mentioning Kilduff’s key sets, along with crediting their coach for keeping them in the game. “Borrelli really inspired us… in the last set, he pushed us to do our best, it really motivated us to just do better,” said Carr.

RISING SUN LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK WITH AWAY GAME AT C. MILTON WRIGHT ON SEPTEMBER 21 AFTER LOSING 0-3 TO BEL AIR.

TRI-STATE CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL TEAM FACES PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

By Megan Steimer It was an exciting afternoon for Providence Christian Academy and TriState Christian Academy as the middle school volleyball teams faced off against each other for the first time this year. The Providence Griffins made some great passes while the Tri-State Crusaders had some strong serves, helping them secure a 25-18, 25-13 win over Providence Christian. Early in game one, Tri-State was leading 4-3 when Lizzy Harris served an ace to make it 5-3 but Providence came right back with

a kill from Kylie Ameen to make it 5-4. Soon after, the Crusaders Hayden Thomas served back-to-back aces followed by an Edye Page kill, giving Tri-State a sixpoint lead. The Griffins Ashlyn Reeder had a great pass that took the ball over the net, landing on Tri-State’s court and giving Providence a point along with some momentum. The Crusaders bounced back as Page made a beautiful set to Harris who finished off the play with a kill. Providence continued to make some terrific passes to stay in the competition and with the game on the line,

Halle Chaffee served an ace to keep her team alive at 2418. Despite the Griffins late surge, Tri-State was able to lock in the last point and close out game one 25-18. The Crusaders serving was a dominant factor in a 25-13 game two win as multiple players went on service runs— including Harris who finished the night with two aces and a kill along with Page who amassed three aces, one assist and one kill. For the Griffins, Ameen had two aces and a kill while Chaffee and Peyton Laye each had an ace.

Strong Defense Is Key To Victory For Lady Tigers

PHOTOS BY JACKI TAYLOR

Rising Sun holds off Bohemia Manor surge to get a 1-0 Win By Kevin Phillips CALVERT--Rising Sun got a goal from Erin Mahaffey late in the first half to take the lead in its field hockey UCBAC battle against visiting Bohemia Manor. That goal proved to be the difference as the Tigers withstood a strong surge by the Eagles in the third quarter and played shutdown defense in the fourth to hold on to a 1-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Calvert Regional Park. “We talked about marking. We talked about how it was a super close game, and we needed to shut them down before they get to the 25,” Rising Sun head coach Katie Keyes said of the fourth quater defense. “That was one of our goals for the fourth quarter. The game was a tight, defensive battle as both defensives played well throughout, and it took a turnover to someone to get on the board. Mahaffey won the ball after a Bo Manor free hit, raced her way down the field and dodged several defenders, and as she approached the net, Mahaffey spun around and took a shot that found the back of the cage to give the Tigers the lead with 1:30 seconds left in the second quarter. “Well, initially, I intended to cross the goal, but when I looked up and saw the open scoring opportunity, I took it,” Mahaffey said of her mindset as she was taking the shot. Rising Sun refused to sit on its lead and attacked for the first seven minutes of the third quarter but could not score, however. The Eagles responded with their longest sustained surge during the contest as they kept the ball deep on its attacking end of the field over the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter. The Tigers withstood the pressure in the third quarter as they fended off five penalty corners during the stretch to keep Bo Manor off the board, and Keyes credits her team’s mindset for holding on during the surge. “We do a lot of practice on corners in regards to marking and whatnot,” Keyes said. “Honestly, I think it’s the desire to prevent a goal. We have a tough group of players, especially the defenders. We worked on mental toughness, and I think they showed that today.” The Tigers possessed the ball for most of the fourth quarter, and each time the Eagles managed to gain possession, the Rising Sun defense stymied any foray into its territory and quickly took the ball back to hold on to the win.
