GOLDEN ELKS SCRIMMAGE OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL The Golden Elks of Elkton played their final scrimmage of the year on Friday against Oxford Area High School. When we first arrived at Elkton’s Softball Field we found both teams wearing white. Oxford has their usual uniforms but the Lady Elks were wearing white Elkton Softball T-shirts. The

Lady Elks will be sporting new uniforms this year with a Home and an Away Uniform. On Wednesday, March 23 the Lady Elks will be playing away at Patterson Mill and have their new away jerseys while fans who come to the first home game of the year on Friday March

25 will see the new Home Uniform. Leann Pugh started out in the circle for Elkton with Maddie Holmes finishing the game. The Lady Elks look ready for the season to begin which is good because Patterson Mill is not where anyone usually wants to start a season.

RISING SUN’S LADY TIGERS READY TO START THE REGULAR SEASON ON MONDAY

The Rising Sun Lady Tigers finished of their pre-season scrimmage schedule with a busy day on Saturday playing 3 teams from Delaware. Red Lion Christian Academy hosted Rising Sun, Caravel, and St George for an exciting day at their beautiful facility unlike any softball field in Cecil County. There are a few new names on the roster for the Tigers this year. Madison Nolan was shortstop for the undefeated Lady Tigers JV squad last year and made the Varsity team this year. Kelsey Barks is a new student to Rising Sun High and an experienced player who is also a pitcher for the Lady Dukes - Lynch travel ball team. Lexi Haywood is a freshman and also an experienced player for the Lady Dukes. Jayden Pyle didn’t play for the Lady Tigers last season and this is her first season in the Orange and Black. Last summer Jayden played for the SCC Swat 18u Team where they had a 2nd Place win out of 32 teams in

the 18u Open Grand Slam Select Elite Showcase. The Lady Tigers lost their short stop last year and 2 outfielders but have filled the spots with experienced players. The Lady Tigers and Caravel started off the morning schedule with Cadence Williams in the circle pitching for the Tigers. Caravel came away with the 2-1 win in the first game of the day. Immediately following the Caravel game, the Lady Tigers faced their host team from Red Lion. It was a great game and more than once we saw both teams escape bases loaded situations. The game would end in an 8-8 tie due to time limits on the games. After a break the Lady Tigers came back to play the fourth game of the againt St Georges where it was sun on top 6-3 at the end. The Tigers begin regular season play on Monday with a Home Opener against Laurel High School from Delaware. Game time is scheduled for 3:30pm. On Thursday, the

Varsity squad travels to Queen Anne’s for a game against last years Class 2A Maryland State Champions then return home to Rising Sun and play the defending Regional Champion North East Indians on Friday. The game to see on Friday is definitely the matchup between the Lady Tigers and North East Indians.

In just 6 short hours it was decided who was number 1 in the State of Maryland for the 2022 NASP Bullseye archery season. Lucas Homsombath quietly stepped to the line and by the end of day took the #3 overall Middle School male shooter in the state. Bo Manor Middle School took 2nd place overall in the state for 3D also with Emma Rhudy, Vera Schultz, Talia Rhoads, Greyson Sizemore, Lucas Homsombath and Zach Matthews all grabbing trophys for being a top 5 state archer. The “Poof” and the “Zach Attack”grabbed 2nd overall in the state.

Nope not done yet…….

Bo Manor High School walked away with Aiden Woodie aka “Woodie” knocking down the #2 place overall in the state for High School archers in 3D. The achievements by these archers was no small feat, considering over 436 archers participated in the State Finals for Middle School and High School. Our Eagles brought their “A” game and it showed. Also without the sup-

port of our parents this would not be possible. Our parents selflessly have given their time, money, vehicles and sometimes their “sanity” to support this great team. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne

* Agree with those diehard fans of Pluto who still insist it’s a planet? So does New Mexico. Its legislature resolved that Pluto is still legally a planet ... at least whenever it passes over the state. * During a time of political turmoil, Michelangelo hid in a secret room under Florence’s Medici Chapel for three months, passing the time by sketching on the walls. His secret wasn’t discovered until some five centuries later, when the museum director stumbled upon the room in 1976. * Honorary members of the Harlem Globetrotters include Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. * The Rhizanthella gardneri orchid, which grows entirely underground, was discovered by an Australian farmer in 1928 and generated such excitement that a wax model of it toured the British Isles. * A hen will eat her own raw eggs if not satisfied with her diet. * The Mexican language Ayapaneco, or, more properly, Nuumte Oote (“the true voice”), is dying out, and small wonder: Its only fluent speakers number a grand total of two, and they refuse to talk to each other! * A paired kidney exchange allows people to donate their kidney that wasn’t a match for an intended recipient to a stranger in exchange for a kidney that is a match for their loved one. * In 2010 a San Diego Chipotle customer in a wheelchair successfully sued the restaurant chain with the claim that their tall order counter denied him the full “Chipotle experience” -- like watching his order being assembled. * Sand is the most extracted material in the world. * Actor Joe Pesci was a singer and guitar player in his early 20s and once played in the same band (called Joey Dee and the Starliters) as Jimi Hendrix. COMMUNITY RALLIES BEHIND POP’S CULTURE

HUGE TURN OUT FOR CORN HOLE FUNDRAISER EVENT

By Aaron Rouselle

These past few years have been challenging for us all. During a time we all are so connected via social media and the internet we seem more divided than ever. Yesterday at Pop’s Culture we showed that our community more connected than ever. A few months ago Aaron Boyd reached out about playing cornhole at our facility. We didn't have anything going on and I knew some of the kids involved at Pops loved cornhole so it was a no brainer to let them come on in and throw. With Aaron Boyd came Richard Gary Martin and John Rudik. They loved what we did at Pops and decided they wanted to help out and organized a cornhole fundraiser. I knew it was going to be a good time but I had no Idea how amazing this event was going to be. They worked every evening after work to clean Pops out and help us get the stuff to our new location. They organized to

have Bog Turtle Brewery to be there who donated 20% of beer sales back to Pops. They connected a Black owned food truck from Delaware called L’s Good Eats to come to Rising Sun. I was blown away by what they put together in such a short amount of time. The forecast for Saturday called for rain all day but the sun never stopped shining on us, as over 100 people hung out and enjoyed the day and watched over 60 people participate in the tournament. The entire day went on without a single issue proving the power of our community and that we are all capable of so much love when we come together. Which is part of our message with Pops Culture. On top of the money raised for Pops Culture we were able to introduce what we do and the upgrades we have coming to our new facility. Pops Culture has been a quiet part of the Rising Sun area community for almost two years now. We

are currently renovating the old daycare next to Greenhurst Market to add indoor basketball to the other sports training we offer at little to no cost. Myself Aaron Rouselle tends to get all the credit for Pops but without Ricky Maska, Tyler Ore, and our group of close friends who always show up this wouldn't be possible. As we transition to our new facility we need to thank Andrew Bolen of Precise Performance for allowing us to set up shop in his Building. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Pops Culture the more support we receive the more kids we can help reach their goals. We plan to continue to grow and reach as many kids in Cecil County as possible. Though we are happy with our success so far I think of one of my favorite quotes from the late great Kobe Bean Bryant, “Jobs not finished”. Lets continue to show our youth what we are capable of when we work together.

50CAL ROGUE ECHO BIKE CHALLENGE

21

GRACIE SPRENKLE SETS WORLD RECORD By Sam Dixon

Gracie Sprenkle entered the 50cal Rogue Echo International Bike Challenge for the first-time last year after learning about the contest from Barnes Corner Fitness owner, Mike Montgomery. Gracie has been a member of Barnes Corner Fitness for a little of a year and participates in the CrossFit classes where Montgomery is one of her instructors. Gracie finished fourth last year in the competition with a time of 2:22. The competition is to see how fast you can burn 50 calories while riding the Rogue Echo Bike. Gracie describes it as an all-out sprint on the bike riding as fast as you can. “You can’t just ride it. You have to get the right pace so you can finish the event or else you can’t finish.” says Sprenkle. Signing up for the event again this year Sprenkle felt she had a good chance to win if she could get that pace. Gracie improved on her time from last year by 30 seconds completing the 50-calorie challenge in 1:52. A fast time, but would it be good enough to win? “Times are entered

into the Rogue website and then you have to wait for everyone else to put in their time. It took about a week to get the final results” said Sprenkle. Gracie’s time was entered and once certified and accepted by Rogue, she was declared the winner with the fastest time of all entries worldwide. For her efforts, Gracie received $1000 and a Rogue Echo Bike of her own which sell on RogueFitness. com for $795. She continues to work out three days a week in the CrossFit classes at Barnes Corner Fitness and is playing Softball on the Diamond Divas Travel Team based out of Oxford, PA. She is a student at Rising Sun High School. This year Sprenkle was the only one from Barnes Corner Fitness to enter the contest but now that Gracie has shown it can be done maybe next year there will be more to give it a try.
