Perryville High School Performance Arts Students thrill audiences with Broadway’s Classic Musical

PERRYVILLE - The Perryville High School Performing Arts program put on a spectacular performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Broadway Musical this past week.

This is the third time Director Jill Welsheimer has directed the Broadway hit at Perryville. The last time was nine years ago in 2014 and most of those who attended the show this week were not even born yet.

The show was a huge success with over 1500 children and adults coming out to see the show.

The show had two performers in the role of Belle. Depending on which performance you attended you would have seen Senior Alana Guardipee or Junior Kinsey McCulloch in the title role. Both had wonderful performances that had children singing along and dancing in their seats.

“It was amazing!” said Felicia Rowland who attended with her family on Saturday night.

Director Jill Welsheimer has been at Perryville High School for 30 years and this marks her 26th live show at Perryville all starting with You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown in 1996.

“Many of the props we are able to save for future performances but we lost some of our original set so this year

we had to rebuild a lot.” said Welsheimer.

The castle design is the most elaborate set we’ve seen of any High School production in the county. Perryville Math Teacher Kevin Forman has been working with Welsheimer since arriving at Perryville 17 years ago. He assists as the Technical Director, Set Design, Builder and Lighting. Forman has even appeared on stage as the Big Bad Wolf in

a previous production.

Choreographer and Stage Manager was Caron Leath. Leath also PHS Color Guard.

Welsheimer has not considered yet what will be coming next year but she has proven that each year will be a stunning production with some of Cecil County’s most talented and gifted performers.

Senior Alana Guardipee is Belle of the Ball

Senior Alana Guardipee gave a magnificent performance in the title role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. She has previously appeared on stage in Shrek the Musical, Lion King Jr., Newsies and Seussical. Her final performance on the Perryville stage would be her biggest role as Belle. Alana had the crowd on their feet cheering and young girls dressed as Belle were dancing in the aisles on opening night. Alana plans to attend Cecil College next year and major in Musical Theatre. While at Cecil she hopes to perform in productions with Milburn Stone Theater.

No One Steals A Show Like Gaston...

Senior Isaac Lawson was perfectly cast to perform the role of the arrogant hunter Gaston who is determined to marry Belle. His scenes are memorable and with the help of the Silly Girls, who hang on his every word and fight to be on his arm, the audience loves Gaston even though he is the villian of the production.

Issac previously played Humpty Dumpty in last years production of Shrek. He also played Mufasa in the Lion King.

Issac is also Captain of Perryville’s Tennis Team, he is the Vice President of the National Honor Society and is the Senior Class President for the Class of 2023.

No one over achieves like Gaston!

Christopher Williams is a BEAST!

Christopher Williams finishes his senior year having been in five productions at Perryville High School. His first was as Winthrop in the Music Man in 2017. He was Donkey in last years production of Shrek which he includes as one of his favorite roles.

Next year he will be attending West Virginia University where he will be majoring in Musical Theatre.

In her dream role...

Junior Kinsey McCulloch has been a Princess before having played Cinderella in another production outside of school but she says the role of Belle was her dream role to perform.

This is only the second Perryville High School production Kinsey has been in but she is has been a part of many other productions outside of school and her experience was obvious. Her performance as Belle was as good, if not better, than any Beauty and the Beast stage show you would see in a Disney park.

Kinsey has been in the All County and All State Choirs multiple times.

Do you love the Disney experience but want to try something new? Everyone knows about Disney World, Disneyland, and Disney cruises as options, but Disney also has resorts in Hilton Head, Vero Beach, and Hawaii. If you would like a tropical vacation with the signature Disney magic, Disney Aulani Resort is a perfect combination.

Located on Oahu, Aulani Resort is a luxurious hotel with the fun of Disney and the beauty of Hawaii. Plenty of accommodation choices are available for different size families and budgets. Villas with one to three bedrooms or suites with kitchenettes provide a larger space and the ability to prepare some meals. The standard rooms have either a porch or a balcony to enjoy all the amazing views.

The resort has its own private beach and six pools for fun in the water. The beach has complementary boogie boards and sand toys, so you won’t need to pack those items. Snorkel equipment, paddleboard, and kayaks are available to rent. The largest pool is 8,200 square feet with zero entry and a tunnel slide while the Ka Maka grotto pool has an infinity edge overlooking the beach giving breathtaking views while soaking. Two different tubing adventures await guests, one with extreme rapids through canyons and the other a lazy river through tropical landscapes. The Menehune Bridge is a water play zone for the younger kids. Characters will join guests in a pool party with fun and games. From fun to relaxation, the pools and beach have something for everyone in the family.

Aulani Resort will keep you busy with more than thirty complementary activities. In addition to the pool parties and movie nights under the stars, there are activities to learn about Hawaiian culture. The cultural activities include firepit storytelling of island legends, ukulele lessons and hula dancing. If you need some adult time, Aunty’s Beach house has arts and crafts and games for kids 4-12. Families can discover the Menehune Adventure Trail where they can solve riddles during an interactive treasure hunt while learning about the legend of the menehune’s magical powers and mischief. The fitness center provides free and premium classes so maybe try sunrise yoga on the beach.

In addition to tons of included activities, premium activities can be added as well. A world class spa offers a myriad of treatment options including family treatments. Golf outings can be arranged as well through the resort. Aulani offers excursions such as zip lining, dolphin encounters, island tours or a Pearl Harbor tour. The resort staff will book these for you to make the most of this amazing vacation.

A big part of any Disney vacation is the delicious food and Aulani has plenty of options. In addition to traditional fare, a luau with a buffet of Hawaiian specialties is one choice. Other local favorites like poke bowls, shave ice and sushi are available to try. Contemporary island cuisine at Ama Ama will satisfy foodies with their upscale tasting menu. Of course, it would not be Disney without fun character breakfasts. From snacks at the pool to tropical delights, there are choices for everyone.

A stay at Aulani Resort is a way to experience Hawaii with the signature Disney service and fun. Cruise Planners is a preferred partner for Disney vacations. Contact me if you are ready to book this fabulous vacation.

ing situations and highlights the good in everyday life. Patel plans to continue his education in art and design at a four-year college or university.

ELKTON MAGIC PRESENTS: RJ OWENS

RJ Owens is…in no particular order, an actor, magician, director, and clown.

Born on the Central Coast of California to a School Principal and a Prison Matron proved to be the single-most dullest experience in RJ’s life. Having his father as his school principal and RJ being a miscreant is what lead to RJ’s life of “the ways of magic”. Being suspended by his father for a week from school (for reasons yet to be divulged) and having to spend his days from 7:00am – 3:00pm in the public library reading and finishing three book reports a day is where his first dalliance in magic occurred (unless of course, you count the stealing of quarters from his father’s change jar magic).

RJ’s first paid performance was when he was 10. This momentous occurrence took place in a mobile home park in Soledad, California. The fee was $25.00.

It was there that RJ fell in love with two things…

1. The sound of laughter and applause.

2. Money.

Realizing he could get paid for being entertaining, at age 13 he packed his bags and moved to the Big City…Salinas, California. Ok, getting paid to perform wasn’t the only thing, but no one wants to talk about divorce…do they?

RJ has been performing ever since.

Magic and Acting has taken RJ around the globe, both physically and on Film and Television. Some of you might remember RJ’s first and most definitely last Nude Scene in the movie “The Darwin Awards”. Most of you are having trouble forgetting it.

While living in San Francisco, RJ plied his trade as a magician and actor, having performed in over 70 stage productions, thousands of solo performances and numerous feature films and television series. Utilizing his M.A. in Theater, RJ has directed everything from solo works to full scale stage and video productions the world over.

Run away and join the Circus...

In 2012 RJ was asked to join the illustrious Cirque du Soleil...not as a magician but rather, a clown. He toured with Saltimbanco through 19 countries in 12 months.

Then Vegas came calling.

Currently, RJ lives in Las Vegas and can be seen as Bebe Francois in Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère, a role he has dedicated the last 10 years of his passions to.

When not “trodding the boards” in Vegas, RJ is a quite sought-after Performer, Director and Instructor.

As for RJ’s future…who knows? In the words of his grandmother, “Hell… you’re 53, how much future do you have left”?
