HEALTHCARE ACCESS CERTIFICATION - CHAA
This program is designed to prepare students to earn certification as a Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM) through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM). The CHAA certification is designed to maximize the knowledge base for the medical insurance biller. The certification equips the medical insurance biller with credentials needed to maintain high level subject matter expertise in medical billing and regulatory guidelines associated with revenue cycle management and patient access. Students will learn the principles of medical billing and insurance, and the skills and knowledge required to provide outstanding service in all areas of the healthcare process.
Medical billers play a vital role in the connection between health care providers, patients, and insurance companies. Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims with health insurance companies to receive payment for services rendered by a healthcare provider. As a medical biller, you’ll need to read patient charts to determine medical history, including diagnoses and treatments given. Understanding charge entry, claims transmission, payment posting, insurance follow-up, and patient follow-up are duties of a medical biller. Medical billing translates a healthcare service into a billing claim. The responsibility of the medical biller in a healthcare facility is to follow the claim to ensure the practice receives reimbursement for the work the providers perform. A knowledgeable biller can optimize revenue performance for the practice. For those new to healthcare it is recommended that you pursue the billing certification before the coding certification. CFCC is the only school in our eastern region that offers this program and is accredited with NAHAM. Certification exam is $145. CHAA exam payment is facilitated through naham.org. Courses should be taken in order as listed below.
Job Opportunities: Patient access, Patient In-take Specialist, Unit Clerk I, Records Technician, Medical Records Clerk, and Billing Specialist.

CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL CODER (CPC)
This program consists of four core classes and a certification exam review class. A medical coder reviews clinical statements and assigns standard codes using CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II classification systems. JOB SKILLS TRAINING
MANUFACTURING PRODUCTION TECHNICIAN
910.362.7883 • eeaston@cfcc.edu
“I’ve been in this industry for over 5 years. I started in the production department, and now, a few promotions later, I’m an important member of the Quality Department. My time in this industry has taught me that a lot of the myths like “They’re not high paying,” or “they’re filthy jobs,” are super untrue. They do, in fact, pay well and offer great benefits. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of these opportunities.”
— Sam DiGregorio, Lead Inspector, HSM“As the owner and CEO of a manufacturing company, I am both excited and impressed with CFCC’s Manufacturing Production Technician program. They have really hit the ball out of the park with the curriculum and opportunities that this program will provide! With over 350 manufacturers in the Cape Fear area companies will be lining up to interview graduates from this program. Having a pool of individuals that have such an in-depth knowledge of the skills required to succeed in a manufacturing career is an incredible opportunity for both the new hires and the companies employing them.”
— Michael McWhorter, CEO, MojotoneThis course is designed to develop skills and knowledge of critical competencies required for modern manufacturing and other production-related occupations. Students have the opportunity to earn Forklift and OSHA10 certification as part of the class. CFCC ALUMNI LARRY O’DRISCOLL REDISCOVERS HIS LOVE OF LEARNING
Leaving his Baltimore home to follow his new wife to Wilmington, Larry O’Driscoll also left his chocolatier business behind. For many years, Larry worked in the restaurant and baking industries and now found himself starting over in a new market. Wanting to continue his passion for baking and pastry arts, he enrolled in CFCC’s Baking and Pastry Arts program in the summer of 2020.
FATEFUL DISCOVERY
Upon arriving to the area, Larry began working with a temporary employment agency to get him started in the job market. His first assignment? Working in the CFCC student bookstore.
Larry quickly learned that CFCC had a path to get him back in school and further achieve his career goals. So, he promptly applied to CFCC.
“During my work breaks, I would look through the textbooks and I would talk to everyone about the programs CFCC offered,” Larry explained. “That’s when I saw a chef kit and baking textbooks and discovered that CFCC offered Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts programs.”
ALL ARE WELCOME
Larry points out that students do not need a culinary background to enroll in the Baking and Pastry Arts program. His class consisted of beginners as well as more experienced students like himself.
Even with years of work experience, Larry still learned so much from his instructors that helped
him improve his skill set. When combined with the certifications and associate degree, Larry feels ahead of the curve in the job market.
“Even though I had a lot of experience in the industry, I had nothing on paper,” commented Larry. “Having accreditation in this field is extremely important. That was a big impetus for me to enter CFCC’s Baking and Pastry Arts program.”
MAKING AN IMPRESSION
Larry was also impressed with the quality of instruction. His instructors are experts in the industry and teach subjects ranging from how to operate equipment to sanitation and hygiene to baking. Larry enjoyed watching and learning from his instructors.
“There is some extraordinary talent in this program, such as Chef Phillip Jones,” shares Larry. “He is a fun instructor who is really supportive and creative. Chef Jones is an excellent cook and baker. He is just naturally gifted in the culinary arts.”
Area employers are equally impressed with CFCC’s Baking and Pastry Arts program. Larry witnessed how CFCC’s reputation can open doors for current students as well.
OPENING THE DOOR OF OPPORTUNITY
Following his bookstore position at CFCC, Larry was assigned to the Wilmington Convention Center where he assisted with big catering events. Initially, his tasks were limited to washing dishes.
An observant chef saw that Larry was capable of doing more and moved him to the production side. After his employer learned he was enrolled in CFCC’s Baking and Pastry Arts program, they offered to buy out his contract with the temporary agency and hired him full-time.
Chef Jones is not surprised at Larry’s success. Jones remembers Larry being an inquisitive and talented student.
“I immediately knew he was no stranger to the kitchen when he came into class,” explained Jones. “It was a pleasure to have him in the BPA program, and I know he will continue to do great things.”
NEVER STOP LEARNING
Larry graduated from CFCC’s Baking and Pastry Arts program in May of 2022 and continues to work at the convention center. But, he is not finished learning YET.
Currently enrolled in CFCC’s university transfer program, Larry graduates with his associate in arts transfer degree in May 2023. He plans
to transfer to UNCW, but first, he will enroll in CFCC’s Culinary Arts program. Some day Larry would love to teach, but he hasn’t settled on a subject just yet. Until then, he will focus on building his chocolatier business and showcasing his mouth-watering confectioneries on his Instagram account, Gemini Chocolatiers.
“I immediately knew he was no stranger to the kitchen when he came into class...I know he will continue to do great things.”
—Instructor Chef Phillip Jones

VICTOR MORALES discovers
A BRIGHT NEW CAREER
CFCC ELECTRICAL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
Immediately after high school, Victor Morales went to work for a farm in his hometown of Warsaw, NC . It didn’t take long for Morales to learn that farming wasn’t for him .
A PROMISING CAREER PATH
Determined to start a new career path, Morales began working as an electrician’s helper for T.A. Woods Company , a Wilmington-based commercial construction company.
After a year of employment with T.A. Woods, the company approached Morales with an opportunity to expand his career trajectory. His manager told him about an apprenticeship program at CFCC where he could return to school, gain more training, and still work full-time with T.A. Woods—all while working toward his electrician’s journeyman license.
Morales agreed to sign up for CFCC’s Electrical Apprenticeship program. Through the program, Morales attends class at CFCC’s North Campus two nights per week to continue his education in electrical systems. The four-year program will equip Morales with the hours needed to sit for the journeyman license exam.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT
One of the best parts for Morales is that T.A. Woods has paid all four years of tuition. T.A. Woods and other apprenticeship partners believe in investing in their employees by helping them achieve their career goals. While Morales could have learned on the job with T.A. Woods, the path to his journeyman license might take even longer to obtain. Through the apprenticeship program, T.A. Woods knows that they have an employee who is wellversed in electrical code, compliance, and handson training.
LEARN MORE: CFCC .EDU/APPRENTICESHIPS
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
The program is designed for full-time employees to attend class twice a week. During those two evenings, students progressively learn about electrical theory, installation, compliance, and the National Electrical Code. All of which students can take and apply at their jobs.
If you are already working for an electrician, and want to advance your career, ask your employer about sponsoring you in CFCC’s Electrical Apprenticeship program.
If you are not currently working for an electrical contractor, contact Emily Holt at eholt@cfcc.edu to learn more about registering and connecting with employers for interviews.

Small businesses, non-profits and startups are in need of strong communications.
