A look at the stunning Winter Collection on display at Lakmé Fashion Week

Here at Asian Chic, each month we strive to highlight the most creative, influential and entrepreneurial individuals within Yorkshire’s Asian community; we feel that this month’s issue is our very best yet. After a patchy start to the year, we chat to former Muay Thai Boxing World Champion, Imran Khan ahead of his big comeback fight in November. We’ve teamed up with Bradford based couture company Maysa Boutique, and the always friendly photography company Upendo Images to bring you a stunning showcase of Maysa’s bridalwear – we’ve opted for an equestrian theme, in keeping with our recent Olympic successes!

Cutlers Spice Cuisine 1 Leighton Road, Sheffield, S14 1SP Email: Info@cutlersspice.co.uk Tel: 0114 2416641 www.cutlersspice.co.uk

Our fair Steel City has always been a cultural melting pot, filled to the brim with everything from the mundane to the fabulously exotic! This applies especially to Sheffield’s top notch eateries. With everything from fine Chinese cuisine to traditional English on the menu, Sheffield is truly world class when it comes to a great meal out. Amongst these dens of gastric pleasure is a true gem, a place that takes the traditional cuisine of South Asian sovereign state, Bangladesh, and ignites the hardened Steel City taste buds. This restaurant is Cutlers Spice! At its heart a true taste of Bangladesh with a contemporary twist, - Cutlers Spice on Leighton Road, Sheffield, leaves traditional behind, embracing modernity to culminate in a truly fantastic dining experience. This is no more evident than in its tasteful decoration with sleek, modern, cream and black furniture and art deco style light fixtures immediately catching the eye as you enter the restaurant. This touch of modernity is gracefully underlined with intricate, South East Asian wall art, subtle in its character yet beautiful and graceful, a new take on “what was” to make a new “what is”. The result is a restaurant that twists the traditional elements of Bangladeshi culture forging a unforgettable night’s dining. The forward thinking family that lie at the heart of Cutlers Spice are hugely passionate about cooking, and are always hunting out new recipes and new ways to twist the traditional. Filled with mouth watering, distinctly unique dishes, after the Cutlers Spice dining experience, your taste buds will never be the same. Such special delicacies include Naga Chicken for £7.95 (cooked with Naga Chilli), Banglo Gatta at a very reasonable £8.50 (cooked with mushrooms, lychees and pineapple), Mass Shatkora for £11.50 (served with a variety of fish to choose from including Bangladeshi Phangash, Ayre and Goal Fish) and Modhu Chicken for £6.95 (chicken cooked in mild spices with mustard and honey). Your mouth is watering already, right? Go down to sample the Cutlers Spice menu and your very perception of food will be forever altered! It can be ridiculously hard to find a place to eat when there are so many options available to you; choice is not always the boon it’s supposed to be. Do you want our advice? If you want to head on down to a place with an incredible ambience, mouth-watering food and pocket-friendly prices, then Cutlers Spice is the place to be. www.asianchic.co.uk

Imran Khan had a tough start to the year; having spent a short time focussing on his boxing career, Imran made his move back to Muay Thai with a thrilling fight against the stunning Andrei Kulebin, which, despite his best efforts, didn’t go Khan’s way. This was followed with a hotly anticipated rematch against current World Champion, Tim Thomas, with both fighters having claimed victory in their last bout. A sterling first three rounds from Khan were given away to the champion in the fourth and fifth, with Tim Thomas proving just why he has the belts. After this crushing defeat, there were hushed whispers that Khan was through – fat chance. Now training with the world famous Bad Company Gym in Leeds, Khan is looking as dangerous as ever. After a cracking warm up fight against the Portuguese Miguel Varela, Imran is now set to take to the world stage once again, with what is set to be a thrilling match up against the very dangerous Josh Palmer, at Showdown 12 this November. We caught up with Khan to see how he’s shaping up for the bout. What have you learnt from your last three fights? What happened was I had a transition into boxing. When I came back I fought Andrei Kulebin, he’s an A-list fighter, and it was a privilege to fight him, I’m thankful that Showdown Events brought him in because he’s not a fighter it’s easy to get hold of. I did really well against him, people have said otherwise - I called the fight and I know that I delivered, but it went against me in the end. Then I had my rematch against Tim Thomas, again Showdown Events delivering the goods, getting in the World Champion, so he’s no mug. The first time I fought him I thought I’d won, but it was called a draw. This time when I fought, I was winning until the fourth, then Tim caught me with a good shot and finished it off in round five. After that, I went back to the drawing board, talked to my coach and talked to Showdown. I had a warm up fight against this guy, Miguel, the Portuguese champion, I was really happy with my performance, and if you watch it back, you can see that I’ve still got it in the bag. After your loss to Tim Thomas, some people were saying that it was career over, but now you’ve got another fight coming up against a good, schooled fighter, Josh Palmer. Where do you see yourself going from here? I don’t honestly know that much about Josh Palmer, but from what I’ve heard about him, it sounds like he’s the bees knees. Like you said he’s a well schooled fighter and he’s been in the game a long time, he’s fought some big names and I think he can cause a lot of problems for me, so the last thing I’m going to do is take the fight lightly. I’m looking forward to the challenge, Showdown always put, on a good show and are good at match-making, so I know it’s going to be a good fight.

Does it give you more confidence now, training with Bad Company? Yeah, definitely, they’re a good bunch of lads, Richard Smith has been great and he really knows what he’s doing, he’s dealt with some of the best up and coming fighters. The team at Bad Company have really brought me forward leaps and bounds; it’s amazing, 32 and still learning. What have you achieved so far in your career? I’ve managed to fight some of the very best fighters out there. I’ve held two world titles, I fought for one in Sheffield, the WPKC and then I fought for the Golden Belt World Title in Bangkok. I’ve fougt many of the world’s top ten fighters and fought in some great venues worldwide. Fighting against Tim Thomas was a great achievement because of what he has gone on to achieve, which puts our fights in perspective. He’s now got two world titles at 67 kilos, do you think there is any chance of you challenging for one of those titles next year? I’d love to fight Tim Thomas, even if it wasn’t for a world title. He always causes a threat, and to challenge him, and try and pick apart his game is always a good fight. Are there any other UK fighters that you’d be interested in fighting at that weight? I like to fight the best out there. When you’re fighting against the best fighters out there, there’s always some way to benefit from it, win or lose, they develop your game and make you a better fighter.

How have you started training for the fight? Obviously we’ve just come to the end of Ramadan, which is a blessed month for all Muslims, but I’ve been working hard, I’ve been training every day without fail, an hour or two hours after the last prayer at night. So I’ve stayed in shape and kept my weight down, the only thing I feel I’ve been missing really is running, and maybe a little bit more sparring, but those are the kind of things that I will incorporate over the last few weeks in camp. Has your training changed at all since your loss to Tim Thomas? Training with Bad Company has really made me pick up my game. When I fought Tim Thomas, you could see I was caught off guard and he was very powerful. There are things like plyometrics that I should have been incorporating into my training but I’ve learnt from that now and working with Bad Company has really improved my training.

LAKMÉ

FASHION WEEK 2012

Lakmé Fashion Week started the month of August off with a bang with over 80 world renowned designers taking to the catwalk. Trend spotting: Layering, Tailoring, Structure (shoulder pads and statement shapes), Warm Hues, Celebration Brights and Aztec Prints. There was a wide spectrum of trends on show at the LFW but here’s a couple of the favourites.

Rich earth tones, deep browns and navy, emerald green and sunset reds. Colour block the shades to get the perfect look; Payal Khadawala’s minimalist approach is the perfect way to wear a pop of colour, adding heavily embroided pieces of jewellery or headwear. Embroidery was the show stopping trend on everything from head pieces to collars seen at Shyamal & Bhumika.

Noodle Inn Centro 15 Westfield Terrace, Sheffield, S1 4GH www.noodleinncentro.co.uk Tel: 0114 270 07 35

The food was laid out, champagne was on ice, waiters ready - the scene was set to usher a new Chinese eatery onto the streets of the Steel City. Needless to say when this reporter was told he was to cover the opening of Noodle Inn Centro he was expecting the usual; a speech, small talk and a laid back night. I really couldn’t have been more wrong! Walking into Noodle Inn Centro was like leaving the mundane, grey filtered streets of Sheffield and straight into a room in the Imperial Palace, housed deep within the Forbidden City. Intricate, detailed scenes of ancient Chinese life and civilisation were stretched across the walls; scenes interwoven with gold and silver threads of ancient Chinese life acted to lend an air of authenticity to the opening, as they hung proudly along with bold traditional Chinese wall patterns and stunningly bright lamps that lit the way into a world so far away from our own. “Authenticity” was the word of the night, as Noodle Inn Centro let the Sheffield masses know that they had arrived, and that when it came to replicating the true Chinese experience, they weren’t going to be cowed, delivering instead a spectacle that wouldn’t feel out of place on the streets on Shanghai. Bursting through the doors with an almighty roar, a replica of a traditional Chinese celebratory dragon - known to us as a feature of the ceremonies for Chinese New Year - stumbled and growled its way over the threshold. The dragon itself was a sight to behold, a costume as intricate as it was blindingly colourful, a true work of art with gorgeously detailed, dazzling patterns, filtered through with every colour of the rainbow, along with a proud magnificent head piece that emulated the fierce nature of this beast of Chinese myth and legend. Once it made its grand entrance, the dragon was let loose. Backed up by the beat of a pounding drum, the dragon proceeded to crash its way through the restaurant, dazzling, amazing and even intimidating in equal measure. The ceremony, which is a tradition for the opening of a Chinese restaurant, drew to a close as the waiters gathered to scatter the ceremonial lettuce leaves that signal the end of the traditional opening ceremony. So the restaurant, according to Chinese custom was officially open but the night was still young. After the retreat of the beast, those in attendance were allowed to rush to the buffet and sample the delights of this new gem in Sheffield’s culinary crown. Needless to say those who taste tested this fare were not left disappointed as comments such as ‘tantalizingly succulent’, ‘delicious’ and ‘amazingly appetizing’ were thrown in my earshot. The rice and chicken, cooked with sweet and sour sauce was a particular hit, seen on the vast majority of plates throughout the night. I actually don’t think I saw plates empty very often either, as everyone – and I mean everyone - went back for seconds. Isn’t that the sign of a truly successful opening night?

Noodle Inn Centro has staked its claim as the Chinese of choice amongst Sheffield’s heaving restaurant district, and with food this good, as well as the fact that it is the Steel City’s only Chinese joint to serve Halal lamb, beef and chicken, it can do nothing but succeed, and boy are we glad. When asked about the success of the restaurant’s first night in business, the owner commented that he was “thrilled”, going on to say, “We wanted to put on a show, let people know that Noodle Inn Centro has arrived, and that it’s here to stay”. If opening night is anything to go by, we couldn’t agree more!

The problem for many people is finding enough time and energy to be able to do this. At the end of a long day the last thing we might feel like doing is making a healthy dinner for the family, and then finding more energy to go and exercise. So how do we get that motivation and energy? Making big changes all at once rarely works - try and incorporate small changes into your lifestyle. If you are stressed and don’t have much ‘me’ time, for example, then the first week you could set aside 20 minutes a day to just relax, maybe by having a hot bath, or listening to some music, or reading a good book. It is amazing how much that makes a difference to your overall well-being over time. Being more relaxed and able to switch off your mind may bring better sleep, an improvement in blood pressure, and rid you of headaches to name but a few. Try and do something other than watching TV.

Little and Often

Nutrition is very important, how many of us eat unhealthily due to lack of time, or maybe don’t notice exactly how much we are eating because our minds are focussed on the TV and not how full our stomach is getting? Subconsciously if we haven’t eaten all day we will fill up our plate more, therefore eating little and often to keep blood sugar levels stable is the key.

Quick and Easy Meals

With a little planning it is easy to make healthier meals which are very quick and easy - there are countless recipes available online. Healthy meals for the week could be made all at once and frozen into little freezer bags so it is even quicker to have that healthy meal straight from work.

Water Works

How many of us drink plenty of water? We may mistake dehydration for hunger and reach for food when a glass of water would satisfy us.

Be Different

If you feel a little help is needed with motivation it may be worth looking at something different to dieting; hypnosis can be a fantastic way of changing the way that you think and feel. Apart from helping with your eating habits, helping you to eat less, and giving you motivation to exercise, it improves your overall well-being, teaching you how to relax, and targets the reasons WHY you over eat or can’t find that motivation, for example confidence and stress.

The Human Mind

The human mind is an endlessly complex creation made up of the conscious/subconscious mind. The subconscious mind stores our past, good times and bad times. In times of stress we may experience past bad feelings, which can cause pain physically and emotionally, and feeling stuck in these emotions. This is when we reach for food, to make us feel better.

By changing the way we think, we can begin to make small changes to our habits and start out on the road to enjoying a fit and healthy lifestyle.

1-2 Worthington Street, Bradford, BD8 8ET 502-504 Barsley Road, Sheffield, S5 7AE Tel: 0845 094 30 30 Traditional bakeries move on over, Kashmir Crown Bakeries has blown into town! When we think of the bakery, what do we think? Power through the bluster of what a stereotypical western bakery is supposed to be, what we’ve been told it is through the glossy image of the bakery displayed by the media and we get our answer. A bakery is a place where delicious baked goods are lovingly crafted by expert culinary artisans all with the express purpose of delighting our taste buds on mass, bringing a ray of edible sunshine into our working weeks. True, when encompassed by the warm dry heat of big bakery ovens, we often have to forget the size of our waist line. Our new year resolution to not indulge in luxuries is out of the window. But if a bakery is truly doing its job right, it’s so worth it! If you want a bakery that truly is worth it, then look no further than the Sheffield branch of Kashmir Crown Bakeries. A chain that began in the multi-cultural metropolis of Bradford over forty years ago by forward thinking, innovative Bradford businessman Mohammed Saleem, a man who spent his youth in Pakistan, Kashmir Crown Bakeries was one of Bradford’s first authentic Asian bakeries. Having since then expanded throughout the West Yorkshire area, Kashmir Crown Bakeries has, over its illustrious almost half Century history, become one of the largest Asian Food manufacturers in Europe. Not half bad for a man who started his professional career earning 70 rupees a month at a textile mill! Mohammed Saleem clearly never forgot his roots, as the world class food sold through the Kashmir Crown Bakery chain originates from truly authentic Pakistani recipes that Saleem encountered throughout his youth. With a range of traditional fare on offer such as Badam Cake Rusk, Sweet Baker Khani, Pangeere Sundh and Karachi Crunch Mix, which are among the most popular products the chain has to offer, you can get a taste of authentic Pakistani baking at your convenience. Kashmir Crown Bakery doesn’t neglect the classics either, with Plain Fairy Cakes, Chocolate Cake Slices, Coconut Biscuits and Twin Madeira amongst the list of baked goods it has to offer. Kashmir Crown Bakery has whatever you need, and promises to delight the taste buds in a way that will never leave you lacking! It’s all you need really!

If you plan to embrace true tourist fashion, Times Square is an essential pit stop. As the establishing shot for a thousand films, it’s everything you’d imagine, intensified. Clusters of flashing billboards, TV ads and fast food chains make late night look like mid-day. Check out the waxworks at Madame Tussauds, test yourself with a super-super-size McDonalds or visit one of New York’s famous Broadway shows. To look up and see the night sky framed inside the careful arrangement of towering buildings is to know why Times Square is a top pick for any visitor’s must-see list.

A morning stroll

Take ten paces into the greenery of Central Park and it will become clear why there is an entrance named after every point on the compass – it is no less than gargantuan. Spanning 843 acres across the heart of Manhattan, the park is bursting with life. Whether you visit the zoo, check out Belvedere Castle or eat at the Boathouse, Central Park is the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Above the city

Nothing tells the story of a city as vividly as its skyline. Seen over the course of decades, it’s the evolution of New York’s appearance that tells of traumatic events and new and exciting constructions. Elevated high above those famous sidewalks, stare from the Top of the Rock over the endless stretch of avenues and streets: A life sized chessboard scattered with its finest pieces from The Empire State Building to The Yankee Stadium. Located in Midtown Manhattan, The Rockefeller Center offers spectacular views of Uptown and Downtown New York – and with entertaining pastimes inside and just one elevator to the top, the experience is both effortless and enjoyable. They say the view from The Empire State Building portrays New York at its finest, but after two hours of queuing for the three elevators to the top, your weary feet won’t thank you – 1-0 to the Rockefeller.

View from the river

The Statue of Liberty has become an American symbol of freedom, welcoming immigrants who come to New York looking for a better life – or in your case, just a memorable holiday. Board the Staten Island Ferry and get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the eager sightseers, or speak to the locals who know the city beneath the flashing lights and tourist hype. As you leave Manhattan behind, catch a view of Lady Liberty herself highlighted amongst the famous skyline on the Hudson River – a picture perfect evening, which won’t cost you a dime.

Getting from A to B

New York offers many exciting means of travel, from pedi cabs to helicopters. But with the exception of the occasional cab ride and the endless miles you’ll cover on foot, the subway is the easiest source of travel. At just $30 per week, it’s quick, convenient and spans into every corner of the city.

Where to stay

New York has accommodation to cater for every type of guest, and boasts some of the most lavish hotels in the world. But if you’re looking for a way to cut the cost of your city break, a hostel stay might be just up your street. The hostel industry is expanding all-over the world, and New York has a number of options. Many people (especially students and travellers), rely on hostels for budget orientated, sociable accommodation – and at around $19 per night at HI-NY, you’re set to save a small fortune. Just be sure to pack your flip flops for the communal showers.

Shopping

Even with all the attractions and events in New York, nothing beats a day of shopping. Plan a stroll down Fifth Avenue or take the subway to Soho and spend some time making sure that your suitcase definitely won’t close. With everything from art stands on the street to high-end boutiques, Soho sets to exceed every expectation. Unlike the polished streets that have long since been famed for their fashion, this retail spot has more of an artistic vibe. Let loose with the dollars and hit the cobbles for a day of bargain hunting and celeb-spotting.

Thinking Outside the Box

As one of the most famous cities in the world, it’s not uncommon to feel some kind of personal connection to New York – whether it’s a sport you’re intrigued by or a film scene you’ve pictured yourself in. Think why you came here. Was it to see a ball game and hang with the New York Mets, visit Queens and check out its famous graffiti, or hit the Lower East Side bars and drink $2 Budweisers with the locals? Whatever your scene, scratch the surface and really make the experience your own. Average Temperature | NYC

Although you may want to stay forever, most visitors settle for an action-filled week or ten days. No matter how much time you have in the city that never sleeps, you’ll find that after roaming the five boroughs of New York, sleep is something you’ll need. It’s worth planning your days well, and leaving room for a bit of unstructured exploring – after all, no two New York experiences will be the same.

Sports Tourer manages to achieve a combined 55.4 mpg - this is the last piece of the jigsaw to make the car a great all-rounder. It’s economical and spacious enough to be the main family car, its emissions are low enough to make it an affordable yet very smart business motor, and, of course, the potency of its engine will bring out the devil in you when you feel the need for speed. Motoring Car Review

There are many things I like about this car and just a couple of tiny things I don’t. - Vauxhall Insignia BiTurbo SRi Sports Tourer Let’s get the grumbles out of the way first. The Vauxhall Insignia needs better wing mirrors - they’re just too small and narrow to give you a confident view, especially when changing lanes on motorways. The other small niggle is the steering wheel, it’s big enough to belong in a bus. These minor issues, however, are eclipsed by the motor’s merits. For a start, the Insignia is a good looking estate (Sports Tourer in today’s parlance). It comes loaded with equipment, it’s practical, it’s comfortable. and it’s satisfying to drive. But the model on test here - the BiTurbo SRi Sports Tourer - is not just the usual griffin labelled, load-lugging, mile-muncher. Why? Because under the bonnet, Vauxhall has shoehorned in its most commanding diesel engine ever. It produces 192 bhp and 295 lb/ft of torque, and yet CO2 emissions are only 134 g/km.

The heady, twin-sequential turbocharged oil-burner is based on the existing 1956 cc unit that powers key models in the Insignia, Astra and Zafira Tourer range. However, in BiTurbo form it delivers an extra 34.5 bhp and a significant 37 lb/ft of further ‘get-up-and-go’. The result for the Sports Tourer is 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds - it’s the sort of acceleration that gives you that perceptible ‘pulled back into your seat’ feeling. Complementing this power gain, Vauxhall’s FlexRide adaptive damping is standard on all Insignia BiTurbos (normally a £790 option on front-wheel drive models); the system can ‘learn’ how you drive the car and adapts the dampers accordingly. You can also select Tour and Sport buttons, and configure the throttle, steering and damper settings in Sport mode separately.

The result is a car which is more rewarding to drive than many other large turbo diesel motors on the market. In Sport mode it’s taut, quick, and it takes corners on rails. In Tour mode it’s a gracious and unflappable vehicle, and one which will give you a magic carpet ride to work. In normal mode, it’s simply a good estate car with poke. Unsurprisingly, the Sports Tourer has a big area for loading, and cleverly, under the powered tailgate (which incorporates the rear light clusters), there is an additional set of rear lights, making the car highly visible to other road users if you need to sort out your luggage after the sun has gone down. Finally, thanks to a package of eco features – including standard Start/Stop across the range – the Insignia BiTurbo
