Some days you wake up and say a big hello to the world, eyes bright and tails a-bushy. Other days you wake to find the world is not on your side, but has plans to eat you alive the second you happen to look the other way. No matter what kind of day you’re having today you can always rely on us to bring you up when you’re down and down when you’re flying high. This issue we’ve got a treat, an interview with Gary Numan, in which we will be asking him about cars, obviously. Since this is the time of love, we have a brand new column, “Sex and the Steel City”, along with a countdown of some of the best love songs Sheffield has ever seen. Of course, there is a whole lot more to be read, but now is no time to discuss that, because now you have to turn the page and read on.

Where? Sheffield City Hall When? 15th February
A revolution is coming, apparently, and only Russell Brand fully understands it, probably because he is the one who made it up. Aside from being a political genius Russell is also a comedian, actor and author. Here is your chance to catch the man against the Man, himself, in his tour aptly named “Messiah Complex”. The name refers to complex people are often afflicted with where they think that they are most likely the messiah. Watch Russell speculate his way through history about who probably suffered with this. “I am going to tour The World (our one, Earth) with Messiah Complex, causing bother and excitement and offering opinions that have not been either solicited or thought through.” Says Russell, of the tour.

Tramlines Line-up
The Feeling
This year’s Tramelines line-up has just been announced and it looks like it’s going to be better than ever! The line-up includes the rather brilliant Katy B, who has just released her brand spanking new album Little Red, The Cribs, who are Northern favourites, hailing from Wakefield and a full live set from Toddla T Sound. The renowned city centre festival is now in its sixth year and will be taking place on the weekend starting 25th July. Other acts confirmed include Theo Parrish, New Young Pony Club, Shangaan Electro, Fenech Soler, Slow Club, Jim Jones Revue, The Invisible, 2.54, Friends, Rolo Tomassi and Dutch Uncles.
Where? Leadmill, Sheffield When? 12th March £18.50 Following the success of their latest album, “Boy Cried Wolf”, The Feeling will be embarking on an eleven date UK tour and, luckily for us, they will be stopping off in the Steel City. The Feeling consist of vocalist Dan Gillespie-Sells, bassist Richard Jones, guitarist Kevin Jeremiah, keyboardist Ciaran Jeremiah and drummer Paul Stewart. I just want to take this chance to clear up something about The Feeling. For a long time I was under the common misconception that lead singer, Dan, was married to songstress Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Well, as I learnt a few months ago, that is not the case because Dan is gay, literally, and Sophie is actually married to the bassist Richard Jones. Phew, I am so glad we finally got that out there... It could have been really awkward if you ever happened to meet them without being privy to that gem of knowledge.
This year tickets will cost £12 for a day ticket and £28 for a weekend ticket. You can pre-order tickets at: http://www.gigantic.com
So, back to the point, The Feeling are a chart topping band of talented musicians, the likes of which is a rarity in music these days. Yes, they are a bit tame, but at least they aren’t a bit rubbish, so there. You can buy tickets at www.thefeeling.com

GARY NUMAN King of Synth Charlotte Grainger The king of synth is back once again, this time with a brand new album and tour to boot. Gary Numan, known for his new wave, electronic and sound effects, has had a career spanning four decades and it’s not over yet. This year he released his latest album, ‘Splinter’, and embarked on an epic tour. We caught a quick chat with the man himself. How do you feel your music has progressed over your long spanning career? I’ve never been one for relying or living on past glories. I have always tried to move forward musically, make good use of new technology, new ideas, and new sounds. I think that constant desire to keep moving and trying new things has kept the music fresh. I would hate to make an album that was simply repeating something I’d done before. What inspires you musically? It’s the never ending search for the best groove, best melody, and best sound. I’m as excited today about making music as I was the day I first picked up a guitar or saw my first synth. I love touring so the excitement of working on new songs in the studio and trying to imagine how they will sound live, how the lighting will work, how they will be performed and received by the crowd is all very inspiring. But, more than any of that, it feels like a need. I need to do it, it releases a huge amount of pent up stress and emotion. It’s like having a valve that lets the dark out. Tell us all about your new album ‘Splinter’? It’s my first studio album proper since the ‘Jagged’ album in 2006, not including a side project album with Ade Fenton called ‘Dead Son Rising’ which came out in 2011. I didn’t really start work seriously on Splinter until late 2011 and then immigrated to America in 2012 when it was about half finished. There was quite a gap then, most of my equipment was on a ship for two months, and I didn’t finish it until around May 2013. I had a lot of problems in the years following Jagged. I was on medication for depression for several years which is why it took me so long to get started. And then that’s largely the time it looks at, those difficult years when
10/Gary Numan
your life is falling apart around you. Severe depression is not something I would wish to go through again but I can’t deny it gave me some big things to write about. My career was in trouble, my marriage got into trouble, and it was a very difficult thing to get through. Writing the album was a very important part of dealing with all that, of getting myself sorted out. What can we expect from your current tour? The most interesting and exciting light show I’ve had for well over 30 years. I’m very proud of what we’ve come up for this tour. When I first saw it fire up I couldn’t believe how powerful it was. So, we’re playing a lot of Splinter songs, a few from Dead Son Rising and then a mix of much older stuff. It’s very aggressive, somewhat relentless in its energy level and, from my point of view, very exciting. It’s the most creative tour I’ve done in many, many years. Where have you enjoyed most playing so far on this tour? Seattle was great, Ashville was great, New York, Dublin, but my favourite was London at the Roundhouse. That was quite special. What is your favourite car? (Sorry, we just HAD to.) If money was no object it would be a Koenigsegg ccxr. On a slightly more down to earth level, but still expensive, the new Corvette looks amazing. I love so many it’s hard to pick a favourite (out of the mega car level anyway), Aston Martin, Ferrari obviously, Zonda, Lamborghini, just too many to mention. Back in the real world I have nothing like that. I drive a Chevrolet Suburban, which is like a small bus. I need three rows of seats to keep the children separated so they can’t fight, plus a large back area for our dog Wilbur as he’s an English Mastiff and weighs about 15 stone. I also want something basic so that I don’t freak me out every time the children trash it, which is often.
11/Gary Numan
What’s your favourite band or artist of the moment? A band called Officers are very cool and, although quite new, have already put out some amazing songs. I also love The Losers who just toured with me, their new album is fantastic. What is coming up for you post-tour? I’m working on the score for an animated apocalyptic movie called From Inside, then we start touring again for much of 2014. In between tours I will be getting the next album ready so, hopefully, that will be finished by the end of 2014. On top of that I’m really hoping I can find the time to finish my first novel which has been very much a back burner project for many years. I’d like to get on with that if possible.

REGGAE: WILL TEE Sam Barnett Chic Lifestyle Magazine meets up with Will Tee to discuss his new album, his highlights from touring Europe this year and what’s in store for 2014. Will is a locally based, Sheffield born reggae artist and producer. His career kicked off in 2008 when he started playing to Sheffield’s very own reggae scene. During this time he built his ow n sound system and played to the underground rave and roots scenes in Sheffield with local artists. In 2011 he started releasing his own music, with his debut single King Horn, following up in 2012 with his own label; Descendant Music. He has since collaborated with musicians and artists from across the globe. Will Tee is currently supported by top DJ’s including David Rodigan, Aba Shanti, Jah Shaka, Channel One and more. 2013 has been a big year for you, what was the highlight? It would have to be playing in France, or more specifically in Toulouse. It was in a reasonably sized underground venue but it got totally packed out and the promoters had to block the entrance because there were so many people trying to get in. It was a really old school traditional reggae sound system, everyone was smoking inside… it was just great. Another one would have to be in Poland, the best place was Krakow. It was in a disused army fort, it has a traditional sound system and they’d made palm trees to hang up inside ‘cause they were sick of the cold winter. It was just really surreal. Reggae is definitely becoming more popular in the more developing European countries at the moment. Who have you been collaborating with this year? There have been a lot of different artists this year. In 2013 I predominantly worked with a New York label called Black Redemption; I’ve linked up with a lot of the artists on the label and they have also worked on The Descendent Music label too. I collaborated with Cornel Campbell over tram lines in Sheffield this year; we recorded Too Much Confusion which was the second release on the The Descendent label. But as well as that I like to collaborate with local musicians; I have worked with a local trumpet player called Jacob Harrison. A local sax player called Mimi O’Mally. I like to work with whoever I feel a connection with.
I hear you have a new album coming out. Can you tell us about it? The album…yeah. It’s still a work in progress; we are just about getting there. I have about thirty tunes at the moment and I’m trying to whittle it down to an albums worth, just get the basic tunes down. I’ve been talking with an upcoming Jamaican artist about doing some work together for a while, so this album could be a good time to go for it. I’ve been working with a lot more live bass and other instruments lately. But yeah it’s a work in progress. You are going to be quite active over the next couple of months, with Sheffield in particular. Where can we find you or listen to your music? I’ve been playing on radio shows and DJing around Sheffield; I sometimes present for the Dub Central show on Sheffield live 93.2 FM. It’s a roots Reggae show, should be awesome.
14/Will Tee
Are you playing at any festivals in 2014? I have quite a few lined up already this year. I’m playing at one North Wales, it’s a big festival called the United Nations of Dub. People come from all over Europe; it focuses a lot on the UK style of Reggae, that’s in March, as well as some others later on in the summer. Your music recently transferred over to digital from records. After starting off exclusively as a vinyl orientated music label, I finally transferred over to digital forms of distribution in 2013. You can now get all of the Descendent releases on ITunes, Amazon as well as Direct from us on the Descendent music website… we finally made it to the 21st century! If you want to find out more about Will Tee and his Descendant Music label, or listen to his music then you can go over to the website. www.descendantmusic.co.uk
SEX ANd THE STEEL CITY Salma Haidrani Moving to a new city is like the initial first stages of lust: a heady intoxicating rush of adrenaline, mixed with a potent hint of new-found possibility and potential danger. The transition from a born and bred Londoner to Northern lass? Simple. Thrusting myself into the dating scene in the Steel City? Unfortunately not quite so easy. Mr. P, my first ‘taste’ of the North undoubtedly left a lasting impression. I was off to student favourite Corp to ‘quad vod’ myself silly as celebration for submitting my final assessment. My jovial mood was to continue later in the night as Mr P, 6ft, irresistible blonde sports student with a killer body to match sauntered over on the charm offensive. I fell hook line and sinker over the coming weeks. Only for the lovestruck rose tinted glasses to come off abruptly after a harmless (or so I thought) Facebook stalk whilst he was in the toilet unearthed not only did he have a long-term girlfriend, but was seeing a string of girls making me ‘girl number 4’. While Christmas was ruined for me, Mr. P. ’s (or should I call him Mr. Player?) girlfriend soon found out and gave him an unforgettable Yuletide gift: posting an explicit photo of him on his Facebook news feed and changing his password so he couldn’t log back in to delete it. With his parents on his account, suffice to say he had a lot of explaining to do… While I’ve since recovered from Mr. Player, he certainly had rivals for the ‘types of men to avoid at all costs’ accolade. Mr. Man-child who returned home from university every few weeks only so his mum could do his laundry and of course, the unforgettable Mr. Stalker whom didn’t stop calling and texting several times a day for months of end – so much so that it appeared that he was having a conversation with himself. Sex the Steel City? Not quite what I’d had in mind.
The Music of Love Ah, love... isn’t it just lovely? Love is an indescribable feeling, soaring, tumbling, free wheeling right through your heart into your very soul. How better to describe love than through the medium of song? Here for your pleasure are the top five love songs by bands or artists from Sheffield. 1. Disco 2000 – Pulp This is a sad one, but I have chosen it because the writer is clearly in still in love with Deborah (Deb-orah, it never suited her), his childhood friend from school. Unfortunately she has now moved on and had a child with someone else. The tune’s pretty catchy too. 2. I Want to be Yours – Arctic Monkeys Was there ever a more sincere declaration of love than “I wanna be your vacuum cleaner”? No, I don’t believe there was. This list could not be complete without a song from the Arctic Monkeys and this particular gem is something of an instant classic. “Let me be your coffee pot.” 3. Sex with the Ex – Reverend and the Makers There is literally nothing worse than bumping into an ex... unless, of course, you happen to be looking particularly good that day. This is a song, a ballad of sorts, which tells the tale of a heartbroken guy who runs into his ex and the awkward encounter that follows. 4. Don’t You Want Me – The Human League So... Not your traditional love song, but more a song about love lost, the best kind of love. As they say you don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone and this song perfectly encapsulates that desperate needy feeling when someone leaves you high and dry. 15/Sex in the Steel City

MOGWAI – Rave Tapes
Formed in 1995, the five piece Scottish Postrock band known as Mogwai have consistently brought their A-game to the music they love. Often known in particular for their lengthy composed, instrumental tracks that have a wonderful dynamic to each and every one of them, this band have been in amongst the most cutting edge of musical creation and production pretty much from their start. A regular favourite of the late and great John Peel, they were involved in no less than seven of his legendary sessions for the BBC and have had continued success and popularity to date. Their new album is ‘Rave Tapes’. Due to be in stores come January 20th, the record is set to be another classic, technically brilliant effort from the band, whose mixture of electronics, string and distorted guitar riffs have pushed the boundaries of the post-rock genre further with every new release. The single from their eighth studio album is Remurdered - a dark and twisted, yet sharp number that imagine really is worth a listen before immersing yourself into this new record. Having admittedly not listened to Mogwai an awful lot since their 2011 release ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’, I would expect this new album to be full of the complex and fluid arrangements that are food and drink for these guys, yet I’m excited to hear what else new they have had hidden away in their lockers until now. Fans of My Bloody Valentine, Pixies and general shoegaze or math rock inclinations should definitely check this out.
18/Music
The brainchild of two sisters Jenny Lee Lindberg and Shannyn Sossamon, this relatively young, Los Angeles quartet (now minus Sossamon) have become a staple name in atmospheric art-rock both in America and Europe now. Their stripped down, dark and murky sounds have won much praise since we first started hearing about them, and has won the attention of some high profile names in the music game – former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to name one! The band’s discography includes their 2009 first EP ‘Exquisite Corpse’ which was mixed by Frusciante, and their follow-up full length debut ‘The Fool’ which put them firmly in the spotlight in 2010. Their hotly anticipated second effort, the self-titled ‘Warpaint’, began with jam sessions and demo recordings as far back as 2011, when they stated an intention to write their music as a whole band as they hadn’t gone about things in that way before. The lead single ‘Love Is To Die’, which recently featured in a new Calvin Klein ad of all things, suggests a fresher take on their unique sound and an arrival of a stronger, clearer songwriting style, which I’m looking forward to hearing come January 17th. With comparisons being made to the likes of Joni Mitchell and Siouxsie and the Banshees, it isn’t hard to see why this band are making serious ground with their musical endeavours and their ever-increasing fan base. It’s clear that we are in a real golden period for all-female alt-rock bands at the moment, and Warpaint are following suit impressively. WARPAINT – ‘Warpaint’
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – ‘High Hopes’ There are few musicians that have ever been before (or after), that so many people in the world love and respect as much as Bruce Springsteen. The history of his career and the beloved E-Street Band (as well as how long they’ve been touring the world together) spans in years, well over the age of some of his newest fans, and shows little sign of slowing pace! A simply masterful songwriter, his timeless, all-American working class anthems have supplied a soundtrack to the highs and lows of so many people’s lives, not just in the States but the world over. Heavily featuring Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and guest touring member of the E-Street band of late, he was a muse for Springsteen during its creation and production. The first released single ‘High Hopes’ sounds every bit the classic lead track of a Springsteen record, although originally recorded as part of their Greatest Hits collection in 1995. Having been lucky enough to see the man himself live, I am thoroughly excited by this release in January, and I’m sure his fans worldwide will have equally ‘High Hopes’ for it!

The LEGO Movie Release date: 7th February
What more could you want this spring than a movie including and about LEGO? That’s right, literally nothing. I cannot think of a better premise for a film than the beloved kids’ toy. What’s even better about this film is that it’s in 3D! The story follow Emmet, an average type of LEGO guy, who is rule abiding and generally a good boy. He is mistaken for an extraordinary type person who could be the key to saving the LEGO world. As you may imagine, this is quite an awkward case of mistaken identity, but what follows is an adventure of epic proportions, for which Emmet is completely unprepared. This is an action, adventure which is obviously for family audiences and can be a safe bet if you’re planning on taking the kids out. Also, the film stars Morgan Freeman, who is the best actor known to man.
19/Music
Despite the name this is not an adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays. No, this film sounds far more depressing than that. Set in an alternate New York City, a magical one, this is a tale of good and evil. Peter Lake, a thief, falls for the lovely Beverly Penn, a girl he meets when robbing her home. The twist? Beverly is dying, of course! Peter is also on the run from a gang of thugs, who, for one reason or another, are out to get him. The drama is set in both 1916 and present day and flits between the two, like many other films we have seen recently, I’m thinking The Time Traveller’s Wife and Cloud Atlas. Like these two films, Winter’s Tale is an adaptation of a book, the 1983 novel by Mark Helprin, but whilst seamless time shifts are pulled off on the pages, on the big screen they always tend to feel a little forced. Oh, I forgot to mention, there’s also a magical guardian horse who protects Peter, fantastic. Winter’s Tale Release date: 14th February
Vampire Academy Release date: 14th February If you need a bit of romance in your life this Valentine’s Day, then you probably shouldn’t bother going to see this film. If , on the other hand, you are dating a teenager and want to impress them then this could be a winner. Yes, in the same vain as Twilight, Vamp U and a whole load of other vampire inspired teen flicks, the latest offering from this bizarrely successful genre is in cinemas now. The story follows two 17 year old school girls, Rose Hathaway and Lissa Dragomir, as they attend a hidden magical boarding school (oh, where have we heard of that setting before?), which is for mortal vampires and half vampire and half human type things. Rose is a vampire guardian in training, whilst Lissa is a vampire princess and the two have a close relationship. Despite the fact that the producers clearly just decided to make a film filmed with every modern fantasy cliché possible (vampires, magic, high school, boys), at the core of this film is a story about friendship and Rose’s unfaltering dedication to protecting Lissa by any means possible.

Ross ''The Boss" Burkinshaw Charlotte Grainger At the age of eight Ross Burkinshaw first began to box. At eleven he took part in his first amateur fight. From this early age there was no doubt in his mind what he wanted to do when he grew up. He knew. Ross Burkinshaw was going to be a professional boxer. “All through high school I didn’t really knuckle down, because with my boxing, I just wanted to turn pro.” Admits Ross. He is well spoken and articulate. The mythology surrounding boxers, that they in any way lack intelligence, is shattered when you speak to him. After high school, in 2003, Ross joined the army and in 2004 began boxing for their team. This is where he got his fighting name, “The Boss”; the British Army Boxing Team Captain began calling it him during training and, in his own words, “it just stuck”. Not long after this Ross became Boxing Champion of the army, the navy and the RAF. In 2006 Ross was truly at the top of his game; he made his professional debut and managed to knock out his opponent, Rob Bunford, just 60 seconds into the match. This was just the start of Ross’ career in the boxing world, however just five years later he would suffer a set back that would change the course of his career. It was in January 2011 when things took a turn for the worse for Ross; he tore the ligament in his right knee and needed an operation to fix it. The injury took him out of boxing for 15 months. During this time he trained as much as was possible, but his left leg ultimately overcompensated for his right, causing him to have to undergo two more operations. Ross’ comeback was set for 7th July 2013, when he boxed Gavin McDonnell, whose brother is World Champion Jamie McDonnell. This, he admits, was a mistake so soon after his injury. “After having all of the time out that I’d had with injury, boxing someone so good. I was still thinking I was the same fighter I was before. I thought I could just go straight in at the deep end and,” he pauses, as though for dramatic effect, “it went wrong.” That was a learning curve for Ross; it was going to take time to build himself back up to his former glory, whether he liked it or not. Since then he has changed his approach entirely; six months later he’s under new management, working with a new trainer and using a new promotions service. With this new team, he hopes, he will be able regain his reputation as one of the best boxers in the UK once again. His new secret weapons, then, come in the form of former European Champion, Ryan Rhodes, who
has now taken on the role of being Ross’ trainer, and Dennis Hobson, who has taken over as Ross’ manager. “Dennis Hobson says I’ve been given the golden goose, with him as my manager and promotions and Ryan Rhodes as my trainer, and I agree with him, but I’ve also turned round to him and said he’s been given the golden goose getting me. I’ve got all the experience of Ryan behind me and the experience of David Coldwell as well, with him being in the gym when I train.” With this newfound experience and has come a maturity, and Ross is the first to admit he’s changed. “I’ve matured, I’ve settled down, I’ve got a family now, so things have changed. I can concentrate on my training now.” This new attitude is something Ross puts down to the support of his lovely wife, Nicola. “Before I go in the ring I just want to impress, I want to impress everyone and I want to impress myself. I just want to win and impress everyone. I like the showmanship of boxing.” Showmanship aside, one of the major criticisms of the sport is that it promotes violence. “I agree with that.” Says Ross, “People go to boxing matches, go out after, have a few drinks and think they can box. But most boxers I know are really well disciplined and they don’t use their talent out of the ring. We spar nearly every other day, so we get our aggression out there, so you don’t need to prove anything.” Whilst Ross might not feel like he has nothing to prove outside of the ring, he cannot control the actions of his fans. Regularly he gets people when he’s out coming up to him whilst he is out and wanting to fight. “They think if they knock you out in a street fight, then they’ve achieved something.” In this, Ross says, he is not alone; many of his friends who are also boxers have had similar experiences when out in and around Sheffield. In fact, this unwanted attention is something of a frequent occurrence in the boxing community in general, but by no means something boxers support. Talking to Ross is like talking to an old friend. He is at ease telling me stories and anecdotes. When I ask him what’s next for him, the stock interview question, he is forthcoming and jovial. “I’m fighting a Russain lad and I can’t even pronounce his name” He says and then laughs, self-deprecatingly. I’ll be the first to admit that I did not hold boxers or even the sport itself in any sort of esteem. I will also be the first to admit that, since speaking to Ross “The Boss” Burkinshaw, my perception has changed for the better. Ross will be fighting in the Octagon, Sheffield on Sunday 2nd March. Small Talk with Eliza Doolittle Eliza Doolittle, songstress, writer, pianist, the list goes on. Is there nothing that this girl can’t do? We doubt it. Chic Lifestyle Magazine grabbed the girl for a quick chat. You left school at 16, is that when you started your singing career? Yeah cause I started singing, I knew that that was what I wanted to do already. I started writing songs, I always liked singing, but I started writing songs when I was about 12 or 13. And then I was hooked really and there was just no going back on it after that. I love to write and then I started recording and gigging. Yeah, when I was 15 I started gigging. Obviously then you released your first album, that was three years ago. What lead up to that? Well, I spent a lot of time kind of working on my music and figuring out the sound I wanted to come out with first, and kind of figuring out who I was really, you know artistically. And by the time the album had come out I’d already figured that out, what, two years before so I was writing and writing and then got the album together.
the things I’m singing about. It’s very true to the changes you go through at my age, because you learn about yourself and life in general. I mean do you feel scared, I suppose would be the best word, about having something so very personal out there? Do you know what, no I don’t. I actually feel empowered by it, because you’re releasing so much and there’s nothing you can do, you just have to let go. It’s such a nice feeling. Who are your musical influences? What we’re you listening to when you made this record? I don’t know exactly. I listen to a lot of music. When I was making this record I listened to a lot of hip hop, actually, but I don’t know whether that influenced me. You know, I listen to some old 70’s rock bands, but then I’ll listen to Beyonce and Michael Jackson and all sorts of things, so I don’t know what influences me. I just like great music.
How do you feel like the second album, “In Your Hands”, has progressed from your first album?
Did you know? In 2010 she was an ambassador for Nike running game and did some modeling to promote in London. She has 8 siblings - a big table needed at Christmas (wow). She played Young Cosette in Les Miserables in London’s West End. She is a big fan of Poker. As well as being able to play piano, she is also learning to play the drums. Eliza’s mum represented the UK in the Eurovision Song contest in 1994 (and came 10th, not bad). Her grandmother founded the famous Sylvia Young Theatre School. Growing up in North London, Eliza is an Arsenal fan. Prince Charles has been her hero since she met him when she was 13 and they had a conversation about her Playstation. At 16 she signed a publishing deal. She has over 187 thousand followers on Twitter (are you one of them?). Her recording of the song “Running For Life” features on the soundtrack of the film Adulthood. Her song “Skinny Genes” has been featured on a Very.co.uk advert. Her first album “Eliza Doolittle” received a UK Gold. Her mother won a Tony Award for her role as Eponine in the English version of Les Miserables. Her Instagram account has more than 40 thousand followers.
It’s been three years since the first one and I’ve definitely been on a bit of a journey since that first album. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and I wanted to really write on the second album an honest kind of diary almost from my mind and my heart. In the first album I hadn’t really experienced much of anything, so it was a carefree and upbeat album, whereas this one definitely has upbeat and carefree moments because that’s who I like to be, but it’s also got some other things in it that are just another side of me really, after experiencing some different things. So, are your lyrics quite personal then? Yeah they are. It’s the most personal I’ve ever got actually and it was quite difficult for me to let that out at first and then eventually I did and I felt like after I opened Pandora’s box it kept spilling out of me! So, yeah, every song is very intimate with my feelings and you can really hear where I’m at, or where I was at. I feel like people listening to it will understand that and I think they will understand some of 22/Eliza Doolite
hilariously awful films with a cult following Sam Barnett When the perfect amount of things go wrong, a film can transform from being disappointing box office fodder to a veritable slice of genius. It’s a strange, well documented phenomenon in film. It’s often worse when a much anticipated film displays one outstandingly awful attribute; it only serves to remind the audience that the film was just short of greatness. Are these cult groups quietly mocking the film through an extreme form of enthusiasm, or do they genuinely love the campy, cheap attributes of the film... it’s undoubtedly a combination of the two. But how far is too far? It’s only a matter of time until the cult fans get their new born children tattooed with film references, buy their grandparents movie related merchandise for Christmas and hold you at gun point to watch Troll 2.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988, Chiodo Brothers) This was the Chiodo Brothers directorial debut, but despite their initial success they never made another feature film... Killer Klowns From Out Of Space is classed as a comedy/horror hybrid, but it’s never particularly succeeds in either genre. It’s not funny; it’s not scary but god damn did it make me feel uneasy. Much like many of the films on this list, it instils a sense of unease due to its inability to succeed in any single genre; it creates a peculiar sensation not too dissimilar to trying to have a good time at the circus. It’s quite a rare film to find in physical form, but you can find it within the deep, dark recesses of Netflix.
This was the Chiodo Brothers directorial debut, The Room (2003, Tommy Wiseau)
Troll 2 (1990, Claudio Fragasso) Claudio Fragasso: “Troll 2 is a film that examines many serious and important issues, like eating, living and dying. It’s an important film which talks about the family, the union of family resisting all of those things that want to destroy it and see it dead. In Italy we call this a parable.” The best, worst films are not intentionally made to be awful. Troll 2 was a passion project from Claudio Fragasso, he made it with all sincerity in mind. It started off as a little low budget Italian movie and over the years it turned into a cultural phenomenon. Troll 2 is widely considered as one of the worst films of all time by critics and viewers, I disagree. It’s easily one of the strangest films ever made but by no means the worst. The whole film is one massive contradiction. It’s a horror film without the horror. It’s a film about vegetarian man eating trolls. It’s a film about trolls without any trolls! It just makes no sense, yet it’s one of the most unique and entertaining movies of the early 90’s. Troll 2 has since had sell out screenings across the world, conventions and meeting points for crazed fans to meet up and share their love and passion for the film.
Tommy Wiseau: “I got the idea of The Room from life” Tommy Wiseau is a screenwriter, director, producer and actor. His debut film is so bad that I challenge you to find one single redeeming element. After the release of The Room Tommy Wiseau went on to claim that he was trying to make an intentionally bad movie with The Room. But it was too late, the damage was already done, and it will forever be considered one of the worst movies of all time. The Room follows a happy, fulfilled, wealthy banker. He has everything he could ever want, a beautiful house, close friends and a wonderful fiancée called Lisa. When Lisa decides to cheat everything changes for the worst. It was initially obliterated by critics, but like most films that acquire a cult status over time it acquired a community or hardened and committed fans. There are a multitude of issues such as dreadful dialogue, creating sub plots then dismissing them altogether in the same scene, and who could forget Tommy Wiseau’s creepy laugh.

The 2014 wedding guide Sheffield: Love is in the air (or at least the pheromones) The season of love is upon us, but what is love anyway? Science would say it’s merely down to a pheromone surge in your body, not emotional but purely physical and designed purely to ensure we reproduce. That view is a little pessimistic and to deny any emotional element would be naive. It’s a rarity in the modern world to find another person with whom you have both a physical attraction and a mental connection. If you do, by chance, fate or your own engineering, happen to find someone who fits this bill then you had better hold on to them for dear life, because you are one very lucky person. Once you have found the person you are truly happy with then there is only one way to solidify your relationship status; no, I’m not talking about making it Facebook official (though, let’s face it, that is a massive commitment), I’m talking about the big M: marriage. A wedding is more than just a very expensive party, it’s the union of two people and the celebration of a true bond, that, in this day and age, can be neigh impossible to come across. A wedding is two people declaring their love for each other to the entire world. If you happen to be loved up and ready to make the biggest commitment of your life, then it’s time to get planning. Luckily for you loved up northerners, Sheffield has a brilliant selection of some of the best wedding retailers in the country for you to pick from, so sit back, relax and read on.

Wig and Pen Laura Kay Having eaten at The Milestone several times, it seemed like the natural progression to try the Wig and Pen, its sister restaurant on Campo Lane. The menu is just as full of local, fresh ingredients but just that little bit varied so we felt that we were having a fresh experience. There was also the appeal from their gorgeous winter cocktail menu that includes everything from mulled wine and cider to sloe gin cocktails and a festive mojito, they all come deliciously strong and at excellent value so you can sample at least a couple! The menu is full of amazing choices but in the end after lots of deliberation and promises to share whatever we chose with each other so no one felt they were missing out, in the end we finally went with the famous Paradise Burger, topped with pulled pork and served with fries and the Wig and Unpenned Chicken Burger with chorizo and ‘fookin’ hot mayo’.
They were served on unbelievably heavy slates and in gigantic portions, which is obviously a massive bonus. The burgers were both delicious, served in brioche buns and with a fresh, crunchy red cabbage coleslaw. We actually struggled to finish them, but because we are troopers, powered through and even made room for pudding. We finished the meal with red wine and chocolate cake with salted caramel sauce and their classic sticky toffee pudding. Both were completely delicious and washed down with a festive mojito and a Wig and Tonic perfectly. There is a great atmosphere, the staff were brilliant and it was all reasonably priced for such great food and service. We will now be alternating between The Milestone and The Wig and Pen just to be fair on them both. They’re both as good as each other.
food Sushi at Sakushi Charlotte Grainger A sushi review for people who don’t like sushi. Let’s start with a disclaimer, before we get into the nitty gritty bulk of this review. I hate fish in all of its glorious forms; fried, baked or even raw I find fish a disgusting source of sustenance and this is a subject which I stubbornly refuse to have my mind changed on. So then you may wonder why I am writing a food review about a place which predominantly serves sushi and raw fish. Well, the answer is simple, I, like many other poor souls, get dragged along to these places by fish loving fiends (and friends) and have to find something, anything, on the menu to satisfy my hunger. So here is a review of a Sushi restaurant for people who don’t like fish. I was reassured before seeing the menu that there would be
something even I could get my teeth into and this was not wrong. I was particularly taken by the idea of “Japanese Tapas”, which included a good variety of dishes, all of which were quite appealing to me as a meat lover. Whilst my friends took their time over the sushi menu, choosing the most exotic sounding seaweed wrapped delicacy, I moved on to more important things like sussing out where the deep fried chicken was on the menu. Luckily I found it in the form of Tori Katsu, crispy deep fried chicken in a fruity Japanese sauce. This came on a bed of some sort of salad, which I was able to quickly discard of, and was crispy, tasty good. I treated this as my starter, though it wasn’t specified as such.
30/Food
Next my friends moved on to other fish based nasties, so I opted for Chicken Yaki, which came on a bed of bean sprouts and yaki noodles. I cannot describe how happy bean sprouts make me when they burst in my mouth, the feeling is comparable to winning the lottery. The release you get every time one bursts is fantastical. The chicken and noodles were also well cooked and a lot better than eating fish. I would recommend going to Yakushi on Campo Lane; there is a conveyer belt and the décor is crazy modern. And hey, if you don’t like sushi, they have fried chicken! Excellent.

Origins Clear Improvement Charcoal Mask £10.00 If you suffer from blackheads and large, clogged pores, this mask is for you. This charcoal and clay work to draw impurities out from the skin and absorb environmental pollutants that can get trapped in the skin. Just like a detox for your skin, it gets rid of any lurking dirt and leaves skin feeling clearer, fresher and as though it’s breathed a sigh of relief.
Beauty Spotlight: Face Masks There is nothing nicer than having a bit of time to yourself after a busy day, especially if you plan on giving yourself a proper pamper. One product I’m sure never to skip when giving my skin a little TLC is a face mask, as we all need a little dose of luxury without breaking the bank. Here are my favourite picks for masks that will leave you feeling like you’ve just stepped out a spa.
Soap & Glory Fab Pore Facial Peel £10
Lush Catastrophe Cosmetic Fresh Face Mask £5.95
Have shiny or oily skin that needs mattifying? This little pot is here to help. The mask contains tiny blue beads which dissolve when you rub the solution into your skin and work to soak up any excess grease without stripping your skin of its essential oils. This mask smells heavenly and leaves your skin looking clear, healthy and clean.
We’ve all been there: it’s the day of a huge party, night out or a date and you’ve woken up with two huge spots. In times of a sudden breakout, this mask is like a miracle worker. Made with fresh blueberries, it works to sooth and give your skin a deep cleanse without causing irritation, as well as reducing any redness. It should be kept in the fridge and only has a shelf life of three weeks, so you know it really is fresh!
Capsule Make-Up Bag Essentials Sometimes during long days we can all be in need of a little make-up top up- but have you ever rummaged through your bag only to find four lipsticks in the same shade? Or perhaps you panic-pack your entire make-up collection only to lug around plenty of products you don’t use? This essentials guide will ensure you only pack what you need to spruce up your look on your lunch break. Your day make-up bag should be small and only packed with the essentials as you don’t want to be carrying too much weight in your handbag. The first necessity should be a good lip balm, such as Carmex Cherry Lip Balm. This nifty little pot heals dry, chapped lips, acts as a good base for lip products and even protects against the sun with SPF 15. If wearing a lip colour, make sure you pack it for top-ups, but it’s always nice to have an alternative too (especially if you’re going for drinks after work!) Lip crayons are super easy to apply and give a great pop of colour to “dress up” a day-to-night make-up look. The Bourjois Colour Boost Lip Crayon in Fuschia Libre looks great on both pale and darker skins. It’s important to tend to your skin as well as your make-up. Pop a little tube of hand and body cream in your make-up bag to sort out any dry patches and keep your hands hydrated. Palmers Cocoa Butter Concentrated Cream is perfect for quick fixes. It’s also a good idea to keep a little tube of sanitizer handy, too- Soap & Glory Hand Maid Antibacterial Gel kills 99% of bacteria and contains moisturising ingredients. A concealer is a must for your make-up bag to cover up any dark circles and blemishes and keep your skin looking fresh. Benefit Boi-ing Concealer, described as “industrial strength” concealer, will eradicate any traces of tiredness without smudging or creasing. Nobody needs to know you were up at 6am! Another make-up bag staple is a pressed powder, as they have so many functions. Rimmel Stay Matte Powder minimises the appearance of pores, sets concealer, keeps make-up looking fresh and gets rid of shine. With all those benefits in one little product you’d be silly not to pack it! The final bits to add to your bag are little essentials such as hair ties, hair bands and a little make-up brush (we love the Models Own Powder Blush- its neon colour means you won’t be losing it any time soon!) keep these in a separate pouch or pocket so as to find them easily. And there you have it! A perfect capsule make-up bag with everything you need to top-up through the day. Whether refreshing your look on your lunch break or changing

Healthy Winter Skin
Whilst it’s always fun to play with new makeup looks and try out colourful products, the focus for beauty is a perfect base. Rather than slathering your skin in thick foundation, treat it with the right products and you’ll be provided with glowing, healthy skin that really is crucial in those dull winter months. As always, good skin comes from within too and it’s important not to forget this. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants and if you don’t eat a lot of seafood, take cod liver oil supplements. They contain the Omega-3 fatty acid, an essential element for the skin. Firstly, it’s important to use a cleanser to suit your skin type. Those with dry skin will benefit from the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish kit. The creamy consistency of the cleanser hydrates the skin, and the muslin cloth gently buffs away any dead cells for a smoother base. If your skin tends to sway more towards the oilier side, try Origins Zero Oil Cleanser. It clears the skin without stripping it of the essential oils it needs to remain healthy. Prep your skin with a moisturiser, a key beauty product as the cold winter weather can dry you out and leave you with flaky skin. The Benefit Total Moisture Facial Cream refreshes and sinks into the skin leaving it plump and healthy. Primers are still relatively new to the beauty scene, first becoming popular last year, and now every brand from high street to high end will stock its own version. Primers are an important step in achieving the perfect base as they smooth out the skin, help fix your make-up into place and provide a protective barrier over the skin. The Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch Primer helps to smooth over pores without leaving a greasy residue and leaves the tiniest hint of highlight to inject your skin with a glow. It has been described by make-up artists as a great primer for acne sufferers as it smooths over imperfections. The final finish to your flawless base is a touch of tinted moisturiser. Tinted moisturisers such as the Laura Mercier offering are sheer, lightweight and cover up the necessary blemishes and dark circles whilst hydrating the skin and leaving it with a healthy, dewy finish. Instead of applying with your fingers, use a Real Techniques Expert Face Brush to gently buff the product into the skin to achieve a more natural, long lasting look. And there you have it! Beautiful, glowing, dewy skin which gives a flawless appearance without looking caked in make-up. To accentuate your new, fresh faced image, be subtle with the rest of your look. Add a pinch of colour with a rosy blush, and apply lashing of mascara to open up eyes. Amy Catling

It’s back! SS 2014 will see a revival of the trend that lay in wait since last year, the crop top. This trend, if you can call it that, is best worn with its lengthy counterpart, the midi-skirt. Yes, the clone Top Shop girls will be dressed in crops and midis from now until autumn, so I guess you’re just going to have to get used to that. One of the major issues with the crop top is the obvious: it exposes your stomach. This is all very well and good if you happen to be a stick thin model type, who has the perfect flat stomach physique, which most of us would have to be sick after meals to achieve. However, if you are one of us ‘normals’ then the idea of showing the world your tummy will terrify you and chill you to your rather chubby core. The beauty of this trend, though, is in its counterpart. The midi-skirt is ideal for tricking people into believing that you’re thin, because it covers your actual stomach. This means that the strip of skin you show off when wearing a crop and
39/Fashion
midi is not in fact your stomach, but your rib cage. Now, you’d have to be pretty damn podgy to have fat ribs, wouldn’t you? The midi-skirt serves to hide your belly by flowing over in, whilst onlookers assume that the skin on show is your washboard stomach. Instead of buying high street on this one you can go vintage, at least when it comes to buying the maxi-skirt. Luckily for you, and all of us really, the maxi-skirt trend has been a recurring theme in fashion since the 1970’s, so you can pick up some pretty cheap in the likes of Cow or Freshmans. As for the crop top, I am afraid you’re going to have to buy new. Try Arc, who have a good range of crop tops, from lace to neon. Choose wisely on your next shopping trip.

Interview: Paul Pashley Here’s one for the ladies. If you love a crooner we’ve got just the guy, Paul Pashley, Sheffield’s answer to the likes of Michael Bulblé and Jamie Cullum. Paul has been praised widely for his smooth vocals, velvety voice and smouldering looks. Bringing a fresh lease of life to what could be considered a fairly old school genre, Paul, is at the top of his game having played sell out events in the Steel City and beyond. Here at Chic Lifestyle Magazine we had the pleasure of meeting the man behind the voice.
I'm sort of on a journey and each month throws exciting prospects at me.
Hi Paul, thanks for chatting to us. Let’s start at the beginning. When did you first start performing? I have been performing from my early teens and then trained on a BTEC in Sheffield before a BA Hons degree In Manchester. Who inspires you musically? There are quite a few. I like to appreciate talent, voices like Sammy Davis, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Adele…Harry Connick for not only his voice but his overall input into his works and musical arrangements. If you weren’t a performer what would you do? No Idea. I was working part-time at a supermarket photoshop when I left university, in and out of pro acting jobs. I often thought ‘What on earth am I going to do now I’m in the real world?’ What has been your career highlight so far? There’s been quite a few, but I really treat every gig as they come, I don’t change how or who I am… The highly publicised Rooney wedding was great fun in Italy, working on original material by such respected people in the industry is up there. Sheffield Lyceum gig was nice to do in my home city with my big band! (That would be great to come back and do again!) Performing last week at an event HRH Princess Anne attended. I’m sort of on a journey and each month throws exciting prospects at me. Maybe one day in the future, I will sit back and go?!? Did I do that? You’ve done a lot of covers, which was your favourite? I do appreciate classics that everyone seems to remember and appreciate. Depending on where you are and the
mood, I change favourites! I obviously love each song that I have chosen for my album ‘More..’ A special has to be ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ which has been endorsed by Phil Lynotts mom Philomena! That is a great honour for me and excites me for its release! What are your plans for 2014? After over two years of planning ‘More..’ is top of my list to release in 2014! I want to try and give it the best push I can and already early reviews are very, very exciting! In 2014 I’m looking forward to performing for eight shows for 100 people only at my ‘Fahrenheit stage’ Genting Club

jazz events with my quartet! The spring sees eight intimate shows in Sheffield. What do you think makes Sheffield so special? The people. Honest and hard working.
Sheffield Business Person of the Year Marc Wildes
The end of 2013 saw the 12th annual Sheffield Business Awards, an event which recognises the talents and achievements of local businesses within the city. This year’s event was particularly popular with over a thousand guests turning up to show their support. Presented by The Star and The Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, the awards seek to highlight some of the best businesses and business owners in the community. One of the most prestigious awards is the highly sought after Business Person of the Year Award, which this time went to MD Marc Wildes, of W Academy & Education, a company offering training and apprenticeships for young people within the city. We had the pleasure of speaking to Marc himself to find out how it felt to have won such a title. What did it mean to you to win Sheffield Business Person of the Year? Winning the award means a great deal to me, not just on a personal level but that it recognises the hard work and dedication of my staff who have worked hard through 2013 to make the academy what is it today. We are proud to have received this recognition, which is testament to the ongoing and strengthening relationships we have with so many businesses across the region, and rewards the hard work and commitment shown by all of our team members.
We’re you surprised when you won the award? Very surprised, 2013 has been such a busy time, we haven’t had the chance to sit and reflect on our achievements until now in addition Paul Fletcher and James Biggin have achieved equal success but within a different field in their businesses. Tell us a bit about W Academy & Education? W Academy & Education is a training provider specialising in Apprenticeship delivery in Hairdressing, Barbering, Hospitality, Customer Services, Business Administration, Marketing, Team Leading and Management for 16-23 year olds. It also provides funded learning for employees who want to develop their skills further. The Sheffield market is back on the up and we’re keen to continue to provide outstanding training to young people across the region to get them fantastic jobs. We placed over 150 people in work last year and we’re aiming for over 250 this year. How long has it been running and what are you trying to achieve with it? The academy opened in 2010 but was launched officially in 2012 to both employers and learner. Our aspirations are to be the provider of choice for Apprenticeships in Yorkshire offering high quality training programs and flexible learning opportunities.
43/Sheffield Business Person of the Year
What do you think about the state of the local businesses in Sheffield? The Sheffield City Region is an excellent place to live, work and invest, boasting a broad range of businesses of all sizes and sectors. Local businesses are proud of the area and will bang the drum for its towns and cities at any given opportunity. However, it is important – if we are to grow the city economy – to be realistic and at the same time as championing our city region to recognise some of the key challenges facing local businesses. What advice would you give to other business owners within the area? For all businesses its staff are key to its success, you need to ensuring you develop, train and reward all staff and you will reap the rewards and their commitment and dedication. What are your plans for 2014 and onwards? We have large growth aspirations for 2014 and beyond but ensuring we keep an eye on quality. We are looking at opening other academies to expand our provision and replicate the success we have already achieved.

Mariachi bands and Mexican food: El Paso
There is little more you can hope for in a night out than a mariachi band and some delicious Mexican food. Luckily, the opening night of El Paso combined both of these things perfectly. The re-opening of El Paso had been long awaited and now, when the night was finally here, the months of tireless work and planning were all worthwhile. On entering the newly refurbished restaurant we were handed a glass of champagne; this was a celebration after all. Unsurprisingly the place was very full, it seemed that almost everyone in Sheffield had turned out to take a sneak peak at the new cuisine on offer and with this they were by no means disappointed. Shortly after a drink or three of complimentary wine, the mariachi band began to play and as if by magic as soon as the intro to La Bamba began to chime in, the buffet opened causing quite a stir through out the room. There was a wide range of cuisine on offer to sample from both the Italian and Mexican side of the spectrum. There was everything from chilli con carne to enchiladas to pizza and even the rather delicious jalapeno poppers, which consisted of deep fried cream cheese and jalapenos. One of the most difficult things to perfect when attempting to prepare two types of cuisine is to ensure that both styles are done well, without compromising on quality. However, this
46
is something that El Paso managed to do with what seemed like an incredible amount of ease. Favourites from the buffet included the chilli con carne, which managed at the same time to be tasty, whilst not being too overpoweringly spicy, and a seafood rice dish, which was a nice aside. Every single thing was cooked perfectly and once everyone was fully satisfied, it was time to get drinking. This was our chance to sample the wide range of cocktails that El Paso serves. There is, of course, a list of ‘Classic Cocktails’, including such favourites as the Cosmopolitan, the Manhattan and, of course, The Bloody Mary. However, the cocktails don’t stop there; there are also Martinis, Shots, Sours and even a range of ‘Latin and Italian Cocktails’. Most excitingly, though, was the brand new range of ‘House Inspired Cocktails’; a variety of individual and interesting cocktails designed in house. I tried the Mexican Sunrise, which, though extremely alcoholic, was also very tasty. It wasn’t long before I had another and another of these little delicacies. This cocktail is Prosecco heavy and let’s just say by the end of the night I was happily dancing away to the mariachi band.

Mitsubishi L200 2.5 Double Cab Barbarian
SEat Toledo
It triggers traffic turmoil, shuts schools and closes down factories. But, conversely, the Artic weather that goes with the UK’s winter tends to set the cash registers ringing in dealerships. You see, many motorists, especially those who need to keep businesses running, will now be eyeing up 4x4s for their ice and snow beating skills. Mitsubishi’s L200 Double Cab is one to definitely test drive – especially if an indestructible workhorse is what you need.
On the road, the new Toledo is no speed-demon, but it always has enough ‘get up and go’ to prevent accusations of sluggishness. Its 1598cc, 16 valve, four cylinder turbo diesel engine produces 103bhp – and that’s enough to get you from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds.
In Barbarian guise the L200 Double Cab is practical, comfortable and, with all-wheel-drive ability, it will get you on and off mud-ridden building sites or farm fields with absolute ease. Not only that, the pick-up does what it says on the tin – it will be your best buddy when it comes to collecting loads and, when the cargo area is full, it is the perfect vehicle for dragging a weighed down trailer around. The L200’s looks are not bad either. It is mean and handsome – in a coarse sort of way. The double cab means there is enough room for four-up, so when the Barbarian is not engaged with off road activities or hauling heavy-duty merchandise around, it is a usable main motor, especially kitted out with a luscious leather interior and an automatic transmission. Rapidity, although it is not the first thing you think about when you buy a pick-up, is not an issue on the L200. There is a reason for this: the Japanese-made vehicle has 173 horses under its bonnet and enough pulling power to yank a tree stump out of the ground (well, probably!). The result is that the Mitsubishi picks up pace like an angry rhino – even with its easy going, but rather old fashioned, five speed auto gearbox. And when it gets to its limit it is a raging roadtrain. Good job, then, that the Barbarian has first class brakes to scrub off any excessive get-upand-go. The mighty Mitsubishi is classed as a commercial vehicle – so it is an affordable alternative for outdoorsy business types who demand resilience, versatility and performance. It will also work as the family car – so it is a win win situation – especially if you need a motor with grip when the white stuff comes down. Max speed: 109 mph 0-60 mph: 13.0 secs Combined mpg: 32.1 (unladen) Engine: 2477 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo diesel Max. power (bhp): 173 at 4000 rpm Max. torque (lb/ft): 268 at 1800 rpm Max. towing weight (braked): 2700 kg CO2: 233 g/km Price: £23,249 + VAT on the road
Top speed is a more-than-respectable118mph and CO2 emissions are low at only 106g/km. That means the Toledo is not only eco-friendly, the small amount of carbon dioxide it releases into the atmosphere also brings it into cheap annual road tax territory. The SEAT embraces corners and soaks up lumps and bumps without difficulty. The switchgear is nicely damped and the steering is direct. The well-weighted wheel also gives you good feedback – thoroughly communicating what the road surface is like beneath the four rubber corners. Looks-wise, the latest Toledo is peculiar. It has the appearance of a saloon but actually it’s a hatchback. The front looks modern, with aggressively shaped headlights, but the further back you go, SEAT’s designers have lost their way. The rear-end is the visual equivalent of a song that’s been ‘faded-out’ because the guys in the recording studio didn’t have a clear-cut way to finish the track. My test car, in SE 1.6 TDI Ecomotive 105 PS guise, produced 70.6mpg. That’s pretty staggering. The tank is big too – with a potential range of around 600 miles. The standard safety package for all SEAT Toledos includes driver and passenger airbags, front side, head and thorax airbags. The car is available from as little as £12,500 on the road, but the flagship form I test drove comes with a price-tag of over five grand more at £17,840. Max speed: 118 mph 0-62 mph: 10.4 secs Combined mpg: 70.6 Engine: 1598 cc 4 cylinder 16 valve turbo diesel Max. power (bhp): 103 at 4400 rpm Max. torque (lb/ft): 184 at 1500 rpm CO2: 106 g/km Price: £17,840
37/Motoring
‘I can’t be bothered to drive tonight…’ Well now you won’t have to with BMW’s brand new self driving cars that ‘drift’ around bends and slalom between cones with all the expertise of a race car driver, except actually, they’re completely empty. Using 360 degree radar, ultrasonic sensors and cameras, the cars can sense their surroundings and drive accordingly, whilst being safe, secure and not bumping into everything in sight. It’s not yet been announced when real live, lazy humans will be able to get their hands on these cars but when they do, they’re sure to cause a driving revolution, well a non-driving revolution really.

Psychology Smacking children makes them criminals, probably The debate over smacking children is one which I have always shown little interest in, probably due to the fact that I have no children to smack. However, I am aware that this is something which people tend to talk about from time to time and now there is some evidence to suggest that smacking children can be more detrimental to them then we once thought. A new book, which brings together over forty years of research, searches to highlight new evidence about smacking children. The Primordial Violence by Murray Straus, founder and co-director of the Family Research Lab, suggests that smacking children at a young age can have serious repercussions on the child in their adulthood. "Research shows that spanking corrects misbehaviour. But it also shows that spanking does not work better than other modes of correction, such as time out, explaining, and depriving a child of privileges. Moreover, the research clearly shows that the gains from spanking come at a big cost. These include weakening the tie between children and parents and increasing the probability that the child will hit other children and their parents, and as adults, hit a dating or marital partner. Spanking also slows down mental development and lowers the probability of a child doing well in school" says Murray. The book goes on to suggest that by if children are not smacked they stand a better chance of developing good interpersonal skills and may also achieve more academically. The notion that there may be a link between smacking children and them committing crimes later in life, though, is by one of the most persuasive pieces evidence yet that parents should refrain from smacking in any circumstances.
Facebook #Awks We’ve all been there. You log in to Facebook for a lovely session of mindless procrastination, only to find that you have been tagged in twenty five pictures and in every single one you look like a horse pretending to be a real human and, worse still, your mum has commented on them to say how beautiful her “baby” is looking these days. This kind of social media shame is not uncommon, but what effect do they have on us mentally? A recent study from Northwestern University suggests that theses embarrassing incidents evoke a very strong emotional response in us and one which could actually be bad for us. The most common response that the study found people had to being embarrassed on social media was something called “Norm Violation”. This happens when people feel threatened because their behaviour (which may be considered to differ from social norms) has been exposed to the masses online and they subsequently worry about the social consequences of this. In simple terms this means people worry about how people will react to their embarrassment online and whether they will be shunned by friends and co-workers as a result of it. “People can make bad decisions when posting to your Facebook because they don’t have a good idea of your privacy settings and which friends of yours might see this content,” said Jeremy Birnholtz, one of the authors on the study, “Facebook doesn’t provide a lot of cues as to how friends want to present themselves to their audience.” So what’s the remedy to this? Well, no one actually knows, but maybe higher privacy settings or even quitting Facebook and social media for good. 35/Pyschology

Desi Moves Winner: I Have A Dream
The second ever exhilarating Desi Moves competition was this year hosted by the community radio presenters Steve and Huggy. The competition took place in Birmingham Town Hall and saw a variety of acts and talented dancers come together to compete for the prestigious title. The evening began with a special surprise performance from Team PBN including Bambi and Raj Bains with young dancing stars in areas from Gidda to hip-hop to Bhangra, who grabbed the audience’s attention with their rather brilliant routines and acts. The Sagi Road Show was a performance to behold with Karan Pangali’s classical act taking the audience’s breath away. Karan shot to fame back in 2011 as the only UK contestant to make it to the final of Bollywood’s Hrithik Roshan’s “Just Dance” competition, which was one of the most popular dance events of the year. Toffee and Tru Street Dance also performed and were lively, whipping the crowd up into something of a frenzy. Still there could only be one winner and this time it was dance group I Have A Dream. ‘The competition definitely gave us a platform to showcase our hard work and compete against other fantastic artists. It is very different to what we usually enter, which makes it a unique competition as we specifically focused on two styles we could incorporate rather than sticking to a safe routine for a street dance competition. Thank you for bringing something different and allowing us to experiment with our moves and being able to share the stage with other cultured dance styles was amazing. We have had fun throughout the whole experience’’ said the dance group. “Desi Moves Showdown attracted the wealth of talent out there to create a phenomenal showcase. We had a variety of sponsors on board to make Desi Moves a well produced and high profile dance competition but at the same time bringing together all ages, races and our diverse community together’’ said Gurpreet, the Director of Desi Moves. The show will be aired on BritAsia TV, channel 833.

When package holidays go wrong Charlotte Grainger Now that we’re entering into the wonders of 2014, you may be feeling like it’s time to get away, get some stress relief and get some sun at the same time. But as Marc Cooper, 26, and Danielle Noble, 24, from Sheffield, found out, sometimes going on holiday can be more stressful than staying at home. The couple booked a holiday to Tunisia towards the end of 2013 with hopes of finally getting some down time in between their busy jobs. They opted to go with budget holiday company, Hola Holidays, who offered low priced package holidays by buying each element of the holiday separately and then passing on the whole package to the customers. It cost just over £700 for both Marc and Danielle to get away, a fee which included the hotel for seven nights, flights and transfers. It seemed too good to be true, but the couple would soon find out that it wasn’t. The first three days of the holiday went well, with the couple enjoying life by the pool side and seeing the sights of Tunisia. This was just the break they needed, but on the fourth day Marc was woken by a knock at his hotel room door and a member of staff ushering him downstairs to the hotel manager’s office. “I didn’t know if I was drunk the night before and did something stupid” says Marc, who was shocked to find that the manager wanted to see him about a much more serious matter than mere drunken mishaps. In the hotel manager’s office Marc was told that he was indeed in serious trouble. He was presented with an email, of which the first line read, “This will not come as a surprise to you, but Hola Holidays have ceased trading from 20th November 2013.” The email went on to say that there were currently 500 people who had booked with Hola
Holidays and were now stranded abroad and that a further 2000 would lose their money, which they had pre-paid on upcoming holidays. The hotel manager then told Marc that he would have to pay for the full weeks holiday, a bill to the sum of £350, or leave the hotel. “I asked him what would happen if I didn’t have the money to pay,” says Marc, “but he just said that we’d have to leave then.” Marc and Danielle had no other choice other than to ring their bank in England to extend their overdraft in order to be able to afford this unexpected fee, but that was by no means the end of their troubles. When the couple managed to get in touch with Hola Holidays, who weren’t even able to tell them whether they’d still be able to get their transfers and flights. This lead to Marc and Danielle having to book new seats on their original flight and then waiting outside their hotel at 5.50am on the day of their flight in the hope that their transfers actually turned up. “It was a cheap holiday that turned into a complete nightmare.” admits Marc. “The worst thing is that the day after Hola Holidays went bust, they opened a new company under a different name, so they got away with ripping everyone off.” Marc and Danielle hope to eventually get their money back, because, luckily, they were insured. However, the process could take months before they even see a penny and in the mean time the couple are left out of pocket and have come back from holiday feeling worse than when they went.

The Hazards of Fad Diets You could be tempted, in a haze of pure panic, to start the new year with a fad diet. Fad or crash diets offer a seemingly quick and easy solution, but a sudden deprivation of calories and sustenance can leave your body feeling weak and tired. Fad diets often exclude certain food groups, meaning you could miss out on carbs, vitamins and protein. Many celebrities use fad dieting to drop weight for acting roles or big events, this means that the method is constantly in the media with big name women’s magazines
promoting the latest diet fad as a quick fix. Sure, limiting your diet will mean you lose weight in the short term, but cutting any of the essential food groups from your diet can be seriously detrimental to your health in the long-term. Missing out any of these food groups can lead to symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, fatigue, headaches, weakness and, of course, a decline in your general health.
that there is a shortage in food (because you have been starving yourself on a fad diet) it will immediately start storing fats. That means as soon as you have a break from your fad diet, maybe in the form of a sneaky bag of chips, your body will store it because it will think that there is a shortage of food. This means, you guessed it, that you will actually put on weight in the long-term.
If that’s not enough to scare you into eating right, then think about the long-term stability of your weight. One of the biggest drawbacks of fad dieting, from a body image perspective, is that it can make your weight fluctuate greatly. When your body suddenly detects
I know you don’t want to hear this, because fad diets seem like a good option, but there really is only one way to have a healthy physique and sustain it and that is eating a healthy balanced diet. As with everything in life there are no quick fixes, sorry.

Inside the mind of a Boxer When you hear the word ‘boxing’ what do you think? Violence? Strength? Determination? Boxing encompasses all of these things, surely, but fundamentally it’s a sport and here in Sheffield a very popular one. It’s an all for one sport that not only tests your precision with your punches, but your commitment and drive to succeed. Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine speaks to Sheffield’s undefeated, up and coming Boxing star, Lewis Taylor, on winning a title, training, dieting and his hopes for 2014. I hear congratulations is in order on winning your 12th Professional fight as Undercard for the IBF World Title in Leeds on 21st December…! How does it feel being undefeated? Lewis: Feels amazing. I want to keep an undefeated record for as long as possible, I know not many boxers do but I want to for as long as I can. Aside from being a successful boxer, you also work full time and have a degree in Accounting and Financial
Management, you’ve achieved a lot while still quite young. Is boxing what you’re aiming for full time in the future? Lewis: I’d love to think I’d be able to be a full time boxer but for most you wouldn’t earn enough money just through boxing. Really for any boxer the goal is to earn a lot of money and win a lot of titles.
Lewis: To keep winning, remain undefeated and go onto win more titles on top of my British Masters Bronze I won in March. I’m aiming for an English Title to start next. You’re very technical and fast when you’re in the ring, is there anybody you have in mind you would like to fight and test in the future?
What work do you put in on the lead up to each fight? What does your training and diet consist of?
Lewis: I’d like to fight any of the top boxers as I’d like to be in World Title ranking.
Lewis: I run about five miles a day, six days a week and train five-six times a week. On an average day I’d have cereal, brown pasta, chicken and vegetables, cutting out carbs on an evening. The work for boxing also involves going out and selling your tickets and selling yourself.
With that in mind, what are you hoping for in this year?
You’re only 23 and you have already done very well for yourself in boxing, what do you think would make you even better, to stand out from the rest?
Follow Lewis on Twitter - @Lewistaylor90 Facebook - Lewis Taylor (Professional Boxer)
19/Interview
Lewis: The minimum, I’d like to be thinking I’d be fighting for an English Title. I just want to be stepped up in class. I want to fight in big venues now I’ve fought in the show in Leeds, getting myself on television more.
A negative mind will never give you a positive life.

Mohammed Saleem: Rise to Sweet Success A short history of Bradford’s Kashmir Crown Bakeries store As with most children, Mohammed Saleem’s idea of what he should do in terms of a career were quite different to his parents. Saleem was born in 1940 in Bagh Sheri, Mirpure Azad Kashmir, and whilst his dad would have firmly liked Saleem to go to college get on the career ladder that way, he had other plans. Whilst in Bagh Sheri, Mirpure, he sat his Matriculation exams, and shortly afterwards got a job in a textile mill there. This was merely the beginning of Azid’s career, though. A couple of year’s into his textile job Saleem wanted out. “I had a deep desire to strike out on
my own, but I didn’t have the means” he said. And a few years later he would make that desire a reality. With just a fiver in his pocket Saleem turned up in Bradford, England in 1961. He settled in Bradford working in yet another textiles factory. Soon after he got a job in a shop called Kashmiri Food Store, where he worked for another five years. This is realy where he learnt about the Asian food market and honed in his skills in buying and selling, this is something which would later come in handy when he decided to open his own business. Taking a job as an Asian sweets delivery driver. This gave him the idea for his business; he would start an Asian bakery and confectionery shop. He bought an oven and a mixer and began making a range of Asian bakery products, all of which proved very popular with the population of Bradford.
A few years later, in 1970, Saleem bought a bakery store on Carrington Street, called Kashmir Crown Bakeries, which was one of the first Asian bakeries in Europe. This is where he developed his very special sweet, Crown Cake Rusk. The cake is still made to the same recipe to this day! Now, 43 years later, the company has grown to something which even Saleem himself could not have predicted. Saleem is still the company Chairman, but has now passed on the managerial responsibilities on to the next generation. KCB now distribute to Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Spain, along with USA and Canada. The company is now renowned worldwide!

The Ugly Truth “Bollywood” the next big thing to “Hollywood” represents a diverse culture, the whole 28 states of India and the Hindi language of India. Overall, Bollywood will never fail to attract the eye of every on-looker. It is a larger than life entertainment platform and the big budgets, clothes, make-up and of course the beautiful people is the reasoning behind the attraction. Here you will not find quick fix films, here you will find the real deal. The question on everyone’s lips; what is the truth behind the Bollywood phenomenon? Well the clichéd audience expects to see the same sort of films and same sort of stars again and again. How this routine continues stems from the growth of power rather than the talent factor you would expect. Have you ever asked yourself, how on earth have they got the talent to get that part or be in that film? The short answer: it is very hard for anyone who doesn’t belong to a influential political or film family to break through. That phrase “it’s not what you know but who you know” springs to mind. We have all been there when you’ve sat through a film, wondered what the point of it was and how somebody came up with such a boring storyline. In the case of Bollywood, it does not matter how pathetic movies sometimes can be, but if it has a big name in it, the audience will not think twice.
The truth behind star prices Welcome to the real Bollywood world of stars and their unreal prices. Kareena Kapoor would have to act in eight films to earn as much as Salman Khan can pocket in one film, which in numbers is around RS 23-27 crore. The dirty truth shows that it is the stars who are suppose to be living the high life up in the sky, but in fact it is their prices going sky high. A Bollywood star can be compared to an inanimate object, yes weird and inhuman I know. The price of a star is like supply and demand. In non-economically directed speech, so easier to understand, the great the demand and/or lower the supply, the higher the price.
Bollywood love story Move over all the loved up couples of Hollywood and come forward the Bollywood couple, the most famous in the world, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan. Aswell as holding 5 million fans across the globe, Abhi was born into India’s film industry, the first step to success. Ash’s beauty did not go unnoticed when she was crowned Miss World in 1994 before becoming Bollywood’s breakout star. Working as co-stars to begin with sparked up feelings on both parts, later becoming a blossoming love story. As a culture, Abhi and Ash said they like to celebrate everything, with weddings sometimes going on for 10 days. Imagine the cost and more importantly, the pain in your feet at the end of it. As Bollywood stars appear in 5 or 6 movies a year, the couple have said they are both very busy and in their spare time they don’t do the usual sea, sand and sea holiday or hit the biggest club, they retreat home. Sometimes a cup of tea and a biscuit can have the same relaxing effect as the sand beneath your feet.

Sholay 3D 2014 not only signifies the start of a new year, but a step up in film as we know it, starting off the new year with a 3D conversion of the hit movie Sholay. The 1975 action-adventure Hindi film follows two criminals hired by a retired police officer to capture the ruthless dacoit. It was ranked first in the British Film Institute’s 2002 poll of “Top 10 Indian Films” of all time. 3rd January will see the movie come back with a bang, showing audiences what they missed first time as it will literally and visually be right in front of them this time, 3D is the new generation of Bollywood films as we know it.
Fun Fact Time In the film “Heroine” Kareena Kapoor wore over 130 different dresses provided from top designers all over the world. It has been reported that Kareena’s wardrobe for the film was one of the most expensive out of all the Bollywood films ever created. “Rockstar” was shot in reverse order, with the climax being shot first. Reason: the makers did not want to disturb the continuity of Ranbir Kapoor’s hairstyle Dev Anand picked up his movie titles and story lines from newspaper headlines and stories. The longest film in the world is a Bollywood film “LOC: Kargil” and is four hours and 25 minutes long. A strong recommendation would be to sit comfortably with plenty of snacks if you choose to watch this epic film. Indians buy 2.7 billion movie tickets annually, the highest in the world. But average ticket prices are among the lowest in the world so revenues are a fraction compared to Hollywood. For being obsessed with films, there are very few cinema screens. India has fewer than 13,000 screens compared to the nearly 40,000 in the US.

Style Matters at Jemeirah Spice
Style Matters at Jumeirah Spice Over 300 guests attended the highly anticipated opening of Jumeirah Spice in Ecclesfield. Local talents, such as boxing star, Ryan Rhodes, and Sheffield Wednesday wonder, Roger Wylde, graced the prestigious event. The glamorous event was alive with a buzz of people, all wanting to sample some of the new cuisine and check out the restaurant’s makeover. Guests were treated to a special champagne reception on arrival, before being seated and dined, with full table service. Ryan Rhodes had the privilege of cutting the ribbon in the official restaurant opening, which was rather fitting since he is such a big fan of the local eatery. “I live a two minute walk just up the road and I was a regular before,” said the former British and European boxing champion, “They’ve done a fantastic job. The décor’s really nice, the people are great and the food is probably a little bit too nice! I think it’s great for the area and great for the community.”
12
“I love Indian food and I’ve really enjoyed it. The people I’ve been here with have said it’s as good as any Indian restaurant they’ve been in.” said Roger Wylde. Jumeirah Spice is one of the main sponsors on the ex-footballer’s biography, The Wylde Man of Football, and the restaurant has taken great pride in helping to support one of football’s greatest heroes. The night itself was a massive hit, something, which can be attributed in part to its brand new makeover, which was completed by the interior design specialists at Style Matters, who have done a brilliant job in brining together Eastern and contemporary style to create a modern and beautiful environment. “We’ve got a really great place where we offer high quality, contemporary Indian cuisine that combines the traditional – in the same way that I would eat in my house. We’ve brought my mum’s cooking to Jumeirah Spice to offer Indian cuisine at its best.” Says Abdul Ghafoor, Owner.
Miss Pearl of Asia: Karmen Tang This year saw the very first Miss Pearl of Asia competition, a beauty pageant which represents the diversity of young Asian women, aged 18 to 24. The competition aims to raise funds for children in need, whilst also raising an awareness of modern British Asian women. This year’s MPOA took place in London and was a huge hit, selling out and creating quite a stir in the capital city. The competition was tough, but in the end there could only be one winner and this year that title went to the lovely Karmen Tang. Chic Asian Lifestyle caught up with Karmen to see how 2014 is treating her and what the crown meant to her. Congratulations on winning such a prestigious title! What made you decide to enter Miss Pearl of Asia? My parents have always wanted me to join a pageant. Ever since I was younger they wanted me to join Miss Hong Kong. I’m based in London and someone messaged me online on my Models Mayhem page and asked me to enter and I thought “Why not?”. After moving to London I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet more people. Also I mainly did it just for fun! What is your background before entering MPOA? Well, I was born in England, my parents are both from Hong Kong. I studied Economics at South Hampton University and I literally graduated this summer. So yeah, I’ve done a lot this year and then I started my new job in September which is why I moved to London. Wow, so you’ve had a crazy year. Yeah, it’s been quite a hectic year. What did you hope to gain by entering the competition and do you feel that you fulfilled what you set out to do? Yes, definitely. I think that the main reason that I wanted to join the competition was not only to meet people but also to use that exposure to help the charity and make money for that, and also to help a good cause. There’s still so many things that I set out to do and there’s so many more opportunities that I’d like to take. I’d like to help with charities and societies and having that platform and having that crown has given me the opportunity to do that.
Is the charity aspect of the event something that is quite close to your heart then? I think that pageants are definitely a good way to bring attention to those causes. A lot of people just see charity and ignore it, and then you have the other people who are quite passionate about it, but I think that pageants are a really good way to increase exposure and actually get people’s attention and hopefully get them to help too. The pageant’s motto is ‘natural beauty speaks for itself’, how much do you believe this to be true? I don’t think pageants are all about how you look. Obviously being presentable is a huge aspect, but I think being in a pageant you have to be well-rounded as a person and you have to be beautiful on the inside and intelligent. The way you carry yourself is really important. It’s not just about how much make-up you wear or what kind of clothes you wear, it’s about how you are as a person and that really reflects and shows on stage. What do you believe makes a person truly beautiful? I think what makes a person truly beautiful is being humble. I think not utilising your beauty in the wrong way. I think the way a person carries themselves is important for them to be beautiful too. Do you see yourself as something of a role model for young women in the UK and what impact has that had on your life? I’d like to hope so! I’d like to be a role model for young girls in the respect that I want them to be able to respect themselves. I think that so much pressure is put on young girls right now to look good and send so much money on keeping up with fashion, make-up and hair, but I think a lot of girls miss the point that the focus should be on education and building themselves up. As a role model I’d like to portray that idea. What advice would you give to aspiring girls entering beauty pageants? I would say definitely enter. You meet amazing people; two of the girls I met in the competition have become two of my best friends and I still see them all the time now even afterwards. It’s a really good chance to build your confidence and it’s just a

really good life experience. It’s about improving yourself as a person. So it’s not necessarily about winning, but improving yourself in every single way possible. What plans do you have for the rest of 2014? This year I’ve got a lot of charity events coming up through Miss Pearl of Asia. I haven’t got anything really big yet, but maybe stay tuned.
After moving to London I thought it would be a great opportunity to meet more people. Also I mainly did it just for fun! Karmen Tang receiving the ceremonial flowers at Miss Pearl of Asia

The stars are coming out tonight, they’re lighting up the sky tonight for you... Well they certainly will be at one of London’s best astronomy events of the year. The winner this year, Mark Gee, will have his mesmerising image Guiding Light to the Stars exhibited and you can can catch a sneak peek of some other great photography of the universe as well. Favourites include ‘A Flawless Point’ by Rogelio Bernal Andreo, depicting the Milky Way blankets California’s Yosemite Valley, and Paul Haese’s ‘Solar Max’ – a close-up of the sun we could happily stare at until our eyes went funny. This is probably as close to the sun as any of us will ever get, we hope anyway, as there will be a serious problem if we ever happen to be that close to something so hot! Categories of photos include: ‘Earth and Space’, ‘Our Solar System’, ‘Deep Space’ and ‘Young Astronomer’ for under-16s. Each and every picture is awe-inspiring in beauty. This is an exhibit not to be missed.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, the beholder is me and I think everyone is simply stunning in their own very special way. Unfortunately the world does not agree with me and judges people, particularly women, based on their appearance. This month we have an interview with the rather beautiful (by everyone’s standards) woman, the winner of Miss Pearl of Asia, Karmen Tang. We also have a whole load more interesting things in here... If you’re thinking about going on holiday this spring then make sure you read our special story on package holidays before you do... it might just save you a grand or so. And for film fans we have our Bollywood special feature. Enjoy.
