Our cover star – QI regular Alan Davies – recently embarked on his first UK stand-up tour in thirteen years. We caught up with him in Wales, where he was having a little phone trouble, but the everaffable Alan battled through to give Chic the scoop on his tour, the latest series of QI and some special news for us die-hard Jonathan Creek fans. The paranormal has been a constant source of fascination for me, ever since my days as a strange little child. Halloween’s approach gave me an excuse to mix work and pleasure, as I chatted to the head of Sheffield Paranormal Society, Brenda Diskin at her Circle of Friends shop on Langsett Road. She was of course, very welcoming and extremely helpful and happy to share her knowledge with the Chic Lifestyle readers. As always, our beauty and fashion editors are on hand to give you their top tips to looking and feeling your best. We’ve been scouting out the finest restaurants and salons to to share with you, as well as giving you our hot picks of the month’s theatre, gigs and events in our regular Flaunt feature.

Andi Osho The Studio, Bradford

Bradford Animation Festival / National Media Museum 13-17th November / Tickets £40-£79 www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk

Friday 19th October / £15 / 6pm / www.bradford-theatres.co.uk

Bradford will be getting animated this November as Bradford Animation Festival (BAF) returns to the National Media Museum.

In many ways, Andi Osho sounds like every man’s dream; she’s flirty, funny, and she likes football. How can she not get a date? But such is the premise behind her latest tour in ode to, ‘All the Single Ladies.’ Osho made her comic début last year with the renowned ‘Afrobility’ tour. Now the former actress-turned-stand-up comedian is coming to Bradford with more of her fresh, quick-witted quips.

BAF, the UK’s longest-running animation festival takes place every November and is the perfect hot spot for aspiring animators, cartoonists and artists. Offering a wide selection of host-to-screen talks, retrospectives, workshops and special events by some of the industry’s top names, the festival is set to celebrate the very best in new animation from around the world.

Opening the show, Osho unearths one unsuspecting male from the audience to take her out for a drink afterward – provided he doesn’t change his mind. She then moves through her past dating disasters and embarrassments, perils with online dating, and a number of cruder subjects that she is unafraid to tackle.

Packed with legends from the world of animation and guests from top international studios, BAF will deliver screenings, workshops and the hotly contested BAF Awards which celebrate the best in new animation from around the world. Whether you’re a budding animator, or - like me - just love cartoons, Bradford Animation Festival is a little slice of animated heaven.

Stand-up mathematician Matt Parker, geek songstress Helen Arney and experiments guy Steve Mould present a comedy night for the fearlessly inquisitive.

We all need a good laugh sometimes. Sometimes work and life in general can get you down and you need to let loose, burst out into gut tickling chuckles and relax. Did you know that laughter actually keeps you healthy? Seriously, it’s medically proven! If you want to improve your health then get on down to The Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 18th October or Monday 29th October to watch stand-up comedian Kevin Bridges put on a first class show guaranteed to have you in stitches.

8th November / Tickets £8 / www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

After a year of sell-out shows in London and science festivals around the country, they’re bringing their unique mix of facts and fun to City Hall for the sum total of one night only. Join three of the UK’s best (and nerdiest) performers for an evening of comedy, science, music, maths and interactive experiments as they ask those all-important questions: How can you use a parabola to set stuff on fire? How does the angler fish make love? And how dangerous can things get with just numbers? One not to miss!

Thursday 18th October / £21 / 8pm / www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

So what are his credentials? Bridges started out his televised comedy career on ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ in 2009, he has since gone on to host the BAFTA nominated ‘Live At The Apollo’ and Channel 4’s ‘Stand-Up For The Week’. Bridges now embarks on his new live show ‘The Story Continues…’and will be hitting Sheffield in late October to give us his charming, off the wall take on himself and the trials and tribulations of our modern society, drawing chuckles from every member of the audience on the way.

International rap sensation, freshly pressed American Idol judge, and the undisputed hottest star in the world right now, Nicki Minaj will be bringing her hugely anticipated Pink Friday: Reloaded tour to the ‘Barbz’ of Sheffield this November. Following the successes of her UK Number One album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and the first leg of the tour which came to the UK earlier this year, Minaj will be exercising her polished British accent at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena, this November. The show will see the multi-platinum star reciting a colourful array of hits ranging from her trademark hip-hop specialities to her newfound euro-pop injected tracks resonant of her latest album. See the Young Money rapstress rock the Steel City with floorshaking hits such as three times Platinum single - Starships, Superbass, Pound The Alarm, Did It On ‘Em, Beez In The Trap and you’ll be left in no doubt as to why she was crowned “the most influential female rapper of all time” by the New York Times. As if this weren’t enough, joining the line-up will be special guests, X-Factor contestant, Misha B, and fellow Young Money star, Tyga, so get out those day-glo leggings and get yourself down.

Celluloid Screams, Sheffield’s first horror film festival was launched in 2009 at the Showroom Cinema. Created by award-winning filmmaker and horror aficionado Rob Nevitt, the first festival featured over thirty classic and new horror films from around the world, including the UK première of the monster hit Paranormal Activity, along with special previews and guests. In 2010 the festival returned with an equally impressive line-up including a short film retrospective of the work of Robert Morgan, special guest Catriona MacColl, along with previews of We Are What We Are and I Spit On Your Grave among others. The 2011 festival was the biggest, with Q&A’s with the cast and crew of Inbred and Harold’s Going Stiff, and a preview of Warp Films’ stunning Snowtown. Now, just in time for Halloween, the team behind Celluloid Screams are putting the final pumpkins in place for their fourth festival - which will run from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th of October - promising to be bigger, better and more blood-curdling than ever before. Of course, here at Chic there is nothing we love more than a good horror film and we couldn’t be more excited. Here we take a look at the festival line-up and highlight a few of our favourite picks. Be sure to keep check on the Chic Twitter and Facebook throughout the festival for news, reviews and updates.

Director: Clive Barker / Restoration Director: Russell Cherrington | USA/UK | 1990/2012 | 146 mins -----------------------------------------------------------------------The turbulent production of Clive Barker’s NIGHTBREED is the stuff of legend, and the film released in 1990 was a far cry from Barker’s original novella, with many significant scenes excised by the film’s producers. Presumed lost for over twenty years, the footage surfaced in the form of two separate workprints and has been integrated with scenes from the original theatrical version to create The Cabal Cut – a fully fleshed-out monster epic that captures Clive Barker’s original vision in vivid detail. Featuring a Q and A session with Restoration Director Russell Cherrington and cast members Simon Bamford, Nick Vince and Hugh Ross.

Things begin to go very wrong, however, when Michael discovers that Chris never sent him the video in the first place and strange things start to occur. EXCISION (18)

Directors: Richard Bates Jr. | USA | 2012 | 81 mins -----------------------------------------------------------------------Pauline is a troubled teen. Socially awkward and with an unhealthy obsession with surgery, she would much rather spend her days dissecting roadkill than attempting to fit in with the “normal” students that populate her high school. Her home life is similarly unfulfilling and is punctuated by frequent clashes with her overbearing mother and ineffectual father. The only comfort Pauline finds is in the company of her younger sister Grace, who is dying of Cystic Fibrosis. Influential talkings with

A L A N DAV I E S Emerging from the hugely influential Alternative Comedy scene of the late ‘80s, Alan Davies is these days perhaps best known as Stephen Fry’s permanent stooge on the BBC panel show QI. No longer the angry young socialist, but rather a forty-something father of two, Davies is currently in the midst of a fifty date stand-up tour of the UK, his first in thirteen years. Met with rave reviews across the country, Life is Pain mixes nostalgia, a little soul searching and plenty of belly laughs. The sometime Jonathan Creek star took some time out of his busy schedule, to chat with Chic Lifestyle, from his Welsh hotel room – we talk Life is Pain, contemporary comedy, the latest QI series plus some exciting news for Jonathan Creek fans! What can audiences expect from your latest show, Life is Pain? Well it’s obviously very funny, that goes without saying. It’s nice for me to come back to stand up because I’ve been away from it for a long time. Now I’m 46, I’ve got a whole lot of new things to talk about, there’s a fair bit about my children, who are constantly providing me with new material. There’s a bit about my own childhood, a bit of nostalgia about the eighties, and then there’s a whole lot of scatological nonsense, which always gets a laugh.

What prompted the return to stand-up? It was a combination of things really. We were going down to Australia last year to do QI Live, where Stephen Fry and I went over to Australia and did a tour of QI in theatres, with Australian comedians on the panel. I’ve got a friend down there who is a promoter and she kind of talked me into doing some stand-up dates while I was down there. I’d been wanting to get back into it for a while, but until you’ve actually got some theatres booked and someone pushing you, you can find yourself putting off and putting it off. Once those theatres were in place, I had to come up with these shows. I went to the local studio theatre near where I live in London and started doing work in progress shows, which I’d never done before, it’s absolute torment for the punters who turn up. Eventually, after a couple of weeks, I started to work out the stuff and shortly after I had the completed show. I went and toured Australia and I absolutely loved it – I loved being back on stage and audiences responded well. I got in touch with Mick Perrin who’s a promoter here, and here I am, on a fifty date UK tour.

Are you approaching touring differently now from how you would have a decade ago? When I last toured, which was in ‘99, I was doing so many other things at the same time, that I couldn’t really enjoy it all. So I’ve made sure that I’m doing usually three shows a week, sometimes two, sometimes four. I’m not out all the time, I get back to see the family and it makes it much more manageable and enjoyable. I’m looking forward to each gig, instead of thinking, “I’ve got to do fifty dates in fifty-three days”. It’s much more fun. When I was younger, I was much more ambitious, thinking one thing might lead to another, but now I’m a middle aged man, I just like doing what I want to do.

When you first came to public attention, it was quite a transitional period in British comedy; you started just after “Alternative Comedy” had taken off, nowadays comedy is a huge industry. Do you think that it’s still possible to be incendiary or provocative or indeed to encourage social change? It is different now, definitely – it was a much smaller business on the alternative scene, there weren’t many people in front of us and there definitely weren’t people doing arena tours making millions of pounds, people were doing comedy just because they wanted to. It was certainly more politicised, political correctness was a big thing and I’m a bit weary of people slipping back in that regard, where it’s becoming quite cool and trendy to be anti-P.C. and just calling it “ironic”, I think some people are off the mark with that kind of humour. As far as affecting social change, I think it’s a big ask; really as a comedian, you’re an individual person with your individual stories and if people relate to what you’re talking about great. But as far as influencing behaviour goes – it’s not really possible. You can certainly send people away thoughtful at times. What I’m finding is that a lot of people coming to the shows now, don’t even know me as a stand-up comedian, they only know me from QI – fortunately I’m much funnier live than I am on QI – which I’ve found quite interesting.

What kind of age range are you getting at the shows and do you think comedy is more resilient to an audience age than, say music? I think so to an extent, although I think that the younger comedians like Jack Whitehall attract the younger crowd and then if Bill Cosby came over and toured again . . . My audience is very broad, because I think that the television shows that I do have a wide appeal; Jonathan Creek has been on for a long time and QI attracts a very wide age range. I tend not to think about demographics though, I just want to make them laugh.

Do you consider yourself a comedian or an actor first? Comedy is what I started out doing, though I always wanted to do acting. The first part of my career was many happy years on the comedy circuit. In hindsight, they were probably the happiest years of my career - working with other comedians, going round the country with complete freedom and anonymity. I still consider myself a stand-up, that’s what I’m best at. I’ve done a lot of acting, and I’m not bad at it, Jonathan Creek is hugely well loved, it’s amazing how often I get asked about it, and we are doing another one next year, a feature length one.

The next series of QI is well under way on BBC2 now, what was it like filming? It has been really nice because, after we went to Australia it gave everyone a real shot in the arm, we’d all been feeling a little jaded, and it freshened up the booking policy. They booked a lot of new people this year, a lot more women, there had always been a problem with that, for some or no reason they didn’t think women were funny, it turns out they’re really funny. There was one show with three women guests and I think in the whole history of QI there had only been one show with more than one women on. There was a big change in that regard and it’s been for the best, it’s always nice to have new faces on. I think it’s given everyone a lift, they’ve commissioned us to do another series next year, so it’s all good.

Is it something that you enjoy doing? Yeah, I do enjoy it. I really enjoyed it in Australia and I’ve enjoyed the series. We’ve had big budget cuts and had to do two shows in a day which has knackered us, but those things aside I think it has been enjoyable. I think it will continue as long as the BBC still want it, we might end up with a future online or on the radio – we have got to get through the whole alphabet and we’re only on the letter J so we’ve got sixteen years to go.

Do you have any plans post tour, a new book maybe? Well we’ve got the Jonathan Creek and then QI which takes me up to May next year and then no plans ahead of that. I was supposed to be writing another book, I had a two book deal with the publishers, no one bought the first book sadly, but I’ve been doing signings after each show on the tour so hopefully that’ll shift some of the copies. The second book will have to wait until my two little children are at school because at the moment, at home it’s impossible to do anything other than play with them, which is also much more fun than writing.

What would Alan now say to Alan starting out in the late eighties? “Take your time and enjoy yourself”, I think. My agent twenty years ago did say to me, “you’ve got to smell the roses on the way”, it’s not original advice but it’s good advice.

The latest addition to EnKahnz HQ is a particularly eye-catching piece; a custom made canary yellow Lamborghini desk, produced in house by Naveed and his team, including working headlights! Impressive doesn’t cover it - we sat down with Naveed to find the method behind the madness.

Issue 46 | Chic Lifestyle Magazine

You’ve recently installed your very impressive, £30,000 Lamborghini desk - how did the idea come about and what sort of reaction has it had?

The Lamborghini desk was a personal challenge for me, I wanted to push all boundaries and exceed expectations to see how far I can push my creative mind. I wanted to have something unique in my office that would reflect my work so I decided to make the first working Lamborghini desk in the world. The Lamborghini is also one of my favourite supercars. It was made in house by myself and some of my technicians and finished to a very high standard using all original Lamborghini parts; some that EnKahnz had in stock other parts were bought direct from Lamborghini and some salvaged from Lamborghini breakers. The desk is fully functional both headlights work and the boot space is used for documents/folders etc. We have had an enormous positive feedback, people can’t believe what we have created and find it totally unique.

Can you explain to our readers what EnKahnz do?

EnKahnz specialise in vehicle accident repair and vehicle customisation, we have a fully equipped state of the art workshop and an award winning team of technicians. We deal with anything interior and exterior, from dents and scratches to big major accident repairs, we also do insurance work and provide free courtesy cars. We are a one stop accident management garage and we customise all types of vehicles to any budget you want to work with.

How did you first get involved with vehicle customisation?

It originally started out as a hobby, tinkering around in my back garden. When I got my first car, a Vauxhall Nova, I spent hours working on it and creating my own body kit out of plastic. I’m fortunate that I have been able to turn it into my career.

EnKahnz

Can you tell us a little more about your background, where the idea came from and how you got to where you are now?

I went to Keighley College where I did a three year vehicle body repair course. In between my studies, I worked in small garages to gain experience. When I had completed my course and won the National Student of the year award and got job offers in bigger garages where I continued to work till the age of 23. I felt that I had mastered the craft, so I set myself a new challenge and opened my own small business. I started in a small 20 sq ft garage and now have a 30,000 sq ft garage employing up to 50 people.

Can you tell us a little more about car customisation?

When we customise a car, we are changing the interior or exterior of a car to suits the driver’s wants or needs. People want their vehicles customised for a number of different reasons, perhaps they want to make it faster, or louder or they want a new body kit fitting. More often than not however, people just want something individual that makes them stand out from the crowd. It’s an opportunity to inject some of your own personality into your car. Some people alter the colours or the exhaust, while some go further and install TVs or games consoles.

How do you maintain your enthusiasm for the job?

Car customisation is my biggest passion. I feel no different about it now than when I was first starting out, to me it still feels like a hobby and something that I enjoy. I always strive to make each car unique and different from the last and - like any kind of artist - I feel that my work reflects my own personality.

What’s the most ambitious customisation you’ve worked on?

One of the most memorable ones was a Fiat Bravo; it’s a pretty dull car, but not when we had finished with it. We basically created a car collage, using pieces from five different cars and making them fit on the Fiat; bumpers from a BMW and a Porsche Cayenne, and lights from an Audi. When we had put it all together, we painted it in a five-tone flip colour. It looked pretty out there.

How long does it take to customise a car?

It really depends what the customer wants doing. For a simple pant job, or smaller changes it take take a couple of days, but a complete overhaul can take a few months. You get back what you put in though!

What sets you apart from other businesses in your field?

We’re really the only place that offers all the services a car-owner would require; we’re a one stop shop where everything is done in house. We offer a complete “experience”, we’re a charismatic and enthusiastic team and we love what we do. We always use high-end materials and our after-care services are second to none. My whole team and I are very hands on, no one is afraid to get their hands mucky to guarantee the very best for our customers.

We’ve heard you’re doing a Pimp My Ride style TV show?

It’s in the pipeline. Nothing has been signed yet though but we’re hopeful that it might start broadcast by the end of the year. It will be broadcast on one of the big Asian music channels, and hopefully be titled Kustomizing Kingz. It’s a little bit like Pimp My Ride, but a more realistic look at the technical side of the business, with a bit of fun thrown in too. We’ll have a mix of celebrities and our regular clientèle, so watch this space.

What are EnKahnz plans for the future?

Just working hard and going above and beyond. We’re hoping to expand, maybe even opening another premises in another city. We’re also hoping to open a training academy locally, so that kids who maybe would have been deprived of an opportunity will have the chance to learn and develop new skills which will hopefully give them a leg up in the industry. We’re also working alongside Barugzai designing and manufacturing our own body kits for high end cars. Basically we plan to do it bigger and better!

Sheffield Paranormal

H

alloween is perhaps one of the most misunderstood times of the year. Culturally we see Halloween as the night where we dress our children up in ridiculous costumes and buy chocolate en masse so rabid little devils pass us over and don’t egg our houses. The truth is that Halloween has been twisted into a perversion of what it really is by our consumer culture - the holiday, which was originally known as All Hallows Eve, is actually supposed to be a time for remembering the dead. It was a time to remember those you loved who had passed away and connect with them, feel closer to them than you ever could at any other time of the year. Maybe, as we have discovered more about the world around us, the old beliefs have become the stuff of pantomime, and Halloween went right along with it resulting in the bastardised holiday we have today. There is a small element of truth left however; Halloween is still about connecting with those who have left us behind. This notion, that there is a chance that those who have left us are not truly gone, is something that no amount of scientific advancement has been able to wipe away from our culture; in one form or another, the idea has never completely left our collective consciousness. So people turn towards other methods of explanation. One such theory is belief in the paranormal; the idea that there is tangible evidence that the spirits of those who have left us behind are still with us. This month Chic Lifestyle magazine went to chat with Brenda Diskin, of the ‘Circle of Friends’ establishment in Hillsborough - who is something of an expert on paranormal activity – to get a better insight.

Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 46

Sheffield Paranormal Brenda took the time to sit me down and explain the paranormal in detail, in the process separating fact from fiction; Brenda started by explaining the myth and reality of spotting paranormal activity. Most people think they can spot the paranormal when they use their camera phones to take a picture, and in the process seem to capture on screen what looks like an ‘orb of light’. However these ‘orbs’ are not seen as evidence of the paranormal by experts. This is because they are too easily explained away, either as a trick of technology or as a consequence of their surroundings, Brenda suggested that the evidence needs to be more concrete. Stronger evidence of paranormal activity includes signs of objects moving of their own volition, unexplainable noises and ghostly appearances. However, it cannot be taken at face value; experts insist that before you confirm that it is paranormal activity you must first count out external factors, such as pipes clanging and shadows appearing in your line of sight. After establishing the signs that somebody is not alone, Brenda decided to fill me in on what a spirit actually is. Ultimately, she describes a spirit as energy just like everything else in the universe, a spirit feeds off energy and is powered by the world around us. This leads to the idea that it is the places that are more charged with excess energy, such as places surrounding electric pylons, which attract spirits. This leads to a discussion on psychic energy; Brenda put forth the idea that we all have a latent psychic energy that although often left ignored, due to societal pressure, when developed, allows a person to connect with a spirit. Then we got to that all important part, the encounter. Brenda was quick to reassure me that an encounter with an element of the supernatural is not as dramatic as the media would have us believe. Rather it starts with investigation and the gathering of evidence, often through trigger objects, that there is a presence among us. At that point those who have developed their psychic energy may feel the spirit passing through them, which Brenda described as “though your insides are being pulled at, as though they are being tugged”. At that point comes the time for communication. The fascinating part of this is that it’s not about exorcism, and that most spirits are not in fact malevolent, the key is identity, most spirits are simply lost. They have passed away, encountered new circumstances and seen their world change around them. Most Brenda Diskin

Brenda Diskin began to realise her gift right from infant school, where she would often hear unexplainable voices. However, the gift remained dormant and misunderstood until she met a friend in senior school, who had had similar experiences and the two began learning more, even exploring abandoned buildings. As she reached adulthood she joined the Society for Psychical Research, where she learned how to identify and contact elements of the paranormal. Today she runs her ‘Circle of Friends’ shop in Hillsborough, conducts mediumship shows and goes out with her team of specialists to deal with the Steel City’s paranormal elements.

Trigger Object

These are objects specifically used to confirm the presence of paranormal activity. The idea behind a trigger object is that it is something that when left alone could not be moved without outside (e.g. paranormal) interference. Examples include a marble sitting in the hole of a Chinese coin and alarms that must be moved apart to be activated. When used they are small objects that confirm the presence of the paranormal because they should not be moving without assistance.

of these encounters end quite peacefully, as long as the spirit, as well as their right of peaceful abode, is recognised. This to me was the most understandable part of the whole process; we all want to be recognised, we all need to be understood for who we are. The establishment of identity is a battle we can all sympathise with. Following that Brenda discussed the types of haunting and the results were fascinating. There were two types she highlighted to me; the first is a recording in time. This is where you witness a spirit engaging in a normal activity, such as walking through a building. This was described to me as an imprint, an echo often embedded into the very building, of a person indulging in their usual routine, ultimately harmless. The second type of haunting was more complex, described as the encounter with the ‘ghostly hitchhiker’. An example is where you pick up a hitch hiker, they seem normal, solid and you even talk to them, then a few miles down the road they disappear into the ether. This is because the person either met a tragic end, or because they had a message (even a warning) to deliver. This to me, just further highlights the fact that we dealing with ordinary people, just like us and that they are not something to fear. In accordance with this, we then last discussed making contact with those on the other side. Brenda at her ‘Circle of Friends’ store puts on a class every Tuesday where people are taught how to achieve this state of psychic enlightenment. The first step is to close yourself down to latent psychic energy. The next step is to teach people to use all their senses, this is achieved through meditation or the use of tarot card interpretation. The idea of both is to teach someone to listen to everything at their disposal to establish a connection. This to me seems perfectly natural, we use what we have to establish a connection, there’s no shortcut or magic wand. The idea of the paranormal is much closer to the original concept of All Hallows Eve, than it is to our modern Halloween. At its core, contact with the paranormal is inherently natural, it’s about listening to the world around us to connect with those who have left us behind. This Halloween, instead of playing the part, sit down, relax and just connect. We’re all people; the dead are not something that should be twisted by consumerism. Rather, those trying to make contact are simply looking to be recognised for whom they are and what they have to contribute.

Deep Trance

One type of show Brenda puts on is the deep trance show, where she is deeply put under, her voice and often her face changes, and she as a consequence is not aware of the experience as it happens. It’s an inexact science because you can never be sure what will happen and which spirit will be contacted. It could be a person special to an audience member, but equally likely is the idea that the spirit contacted will hold an attachment to the building or surroundings themselves.

Prithi Raj

407 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PG, 0114 266 6003 www.prithirajrestaurant.co.uk

The restaurant itself is decked out in a modern, contemporary style; deep plums, golds and reds mixed with dark brown wood to give a sleek and warm atmosphere. A welcoming bar area gives way to separate booths and tables, offering a personal space to individual dining parties. With an extensive menu combining old favourites with a careful selection of dishes unique to Prithi Raj, the range of tasty treats is impressive and alluring. With tastes remaining true to that of India and Bangladesh, names like Shobuz Masalla, King Prawn Spa-Cha and Bengal Baher made my tastebuds start to tingle in anticipation. With the chef preparing a selection of Prithi Raj’s best dishes to review, I was excited to try something I wouldn’t normally choose. As an appetite teaser we were first presented with plain poppadums and a pickle tray – warm and crisp with a delicious selection of chutneys, pickles and condiments. We began with a mixed starter, a large platter filled with various dishes - Raj Jumbo Prawns (marinated king prawns, skewered then cooked in a clay oven), Machli Fillet Sizzler (fish stir-fried with potatoes and bullet chillies, with roasted onions and peppers) and Sheek Kebab (minced meat lamb with mild spices, fresh coriander and skewered to cook in a clay oven). Each dish complimented the other perfectly, with an excellently flavoured sauce giving a unique citrusy taste. Fish and seafood wouldn’t usually be my first choice from a menu but I was made to wonder why; the fish was cooked to perfection, soft, light and fresh, taking up the flavour of the sauce without being overpowered. The prawns were juicy and full of flavour, and the lamb kebab was expertly seasoned, adding just a tingle of spice. The dishes were accompanied with fried onion and new potatoes, and although you wouldn’t usually expect to find the potatoes within an Indian starter, they were delicious – delectably spiced, soft and moist.

Recently opened Prithi Raj brings a burst of Asian taste to the culinary hub that is Ecclesall Road. Promising the finest dishes, sophisticated flavours and tantalising spices, I was eager to try the newest Indian eatery in the city.

For the main course, we tried Chicken Jhali and King Prawn Spa-Cha. Strips of chicken tikka cooked with potatoes, onion, green peppers, and cucumber in mild spices, the Jhali was deliciously tomatoey whilst still mouth-wateringly spicy. The potatoes were again an excellent ingredient, flavoursome and perfectly cooked. The King Prawn Spa-Cha was a green-looking dish on account of the added spinach and potatoes, cooked in medium spices with red chillies. The spinach took prominence in this dish, giving an earthy yet spicy taste to the prawns, and an almost minty aroma. We accompanied the main dishes with a portion of soft and fluffy pilau rice and a Kulcha naan, deliciously hot and doughy, filled with bullet chillies, coriander and crushed garlic, oozing with aromatic temptation. For an Indian feast where flavours and spices are adoringly added to create a delicate meal, Prithi Raj is an asset to the Indian cuisine and definitely somewhere to try some new and delicious tastes. Shake, Rattle and Roll Drapes of scarlet, crimson and mauve decorate the inner sanctum as you step through the door. Your surroundings are luxurious, the drinks flowing and the dancers beautiful. They wear outfits sporting magnificent feathers and adorned in thousands of tiny, sparkling sequins. It can only be burlesque, it’s Shake, Rattle and Roll! The Shakespeare Pub is organising a charity event (Shake, Rattle and Roll) on Friday 12th October in aid of St Luke’s Hospice, where among a whole host of home grown acts, burlesque act ‘Secrets of the Boudoir Burlesque’ are donning their sequins and feathers to close the show. Secrets of the Boudoir Burlesque, who describe themselves as ‘Sheffield’s most friendly, fun and affordable burlesque act’ were put together by burlesque performer and pin up model Deadly Nightshade back in 2008 and is described as ‘harking back to the nineteenth century music hall style of entertainment’. With something that promises to be a little different from things on the regular Sheffield Club scene, these cabaret style headliners promise to make Shake, Rattle and Roll an unforgettable experience.

A Plastic Rose Camera.Shutter.Life

However burlesque is not the only style of entertainment on the menu, with other acts such as the live music portion of the night, which is being headlined by soulful rock and roll band The Hosts. Other acts sated to perform on the night include blues act The Blackbirds, and the night’s opening act, indie rockers The Lion Works, who welcome us into the Shake Rattle and Roll party in the Bards Bar at 9pm. As well as music there will be an auction of Sheffield finest artwork form such creative types as Kid Acne, Geo Law and Martin Bedford.

If we were ever to take a snapshot of our entire life what would we find? There is no possible way to fully convey where we are at, physically, emotionally or mentally that specific moment in time. We wouldn’t be able to document our thoughts and experiences, all the mental elements that went into the creation of that snapshot. We need to hear and feel to experience these elements of life - and Belfast post hardcore alternative rock band, A Plastic Rose, have taken this approach on their new album ‘Camera.Shutter. Life’, their new release set to hit stores on Monday 22nd October.

With everything from burlesque to indie rock on the menu, Shake Rattle and Roll promises to be a night of alternative music culture that will not only prove memorable, but will provide a fantastic alternative to the thudding chart music that filters through the speakers of every other club the Steel City currently has to offer!

The LP seems to very much be a round-up, a look back from a specific point in time at the life, times and experiences of the member of ‘A Plastic Rose’. The album opens with tracks that appear to address negativity, through themes such as anarchy (Build From the Ground Up), impermanence (‘All You Know And Love Will Die’) and the wearing down of internal strength (‘...And The Sea’), pos-

sibly reflecting the songwriter’s unhinged mental state that sets a tone for the rest of ‘Camera.Shutter.Life. As the album progresses, it builds momentum, hitting its stride when it turns to address the issues present in the break down of a relationship (‘Kids Don’t Behave Like This’), along with the desperation of trying to make things work (‘Indian Sheets’, ‘Skin’). At this point the beat of the music takes a back seat as the band use eloquent lyrics alongside insistent vocal refrains to convey the true desperation one can feel when the love of their life is slipping out of their hands. The LP takes on a more positive and determined tone towards its end (‘When the Morning Comes’, ‘Boy Racer’, ‘Suns a Shadow’) as the band use imagery in a clever manner to explore redemption. Ultimately the lyrics drive the record, using word plays, vocal refrains and classic rock sounds to explore a state of mind in one mental snapshot.

Gallows Gallows How do we define punk rock music? To many of us it’s screaming vocals that almost literally break the sound barrier. For others it’s that classic mix of fierce electric guitar and pounding drum beats that ignite the feel of rebellion. Perhaps it’s about anarchy and rebellion itself - the music has to say something? Punk Rock is no longer the dominant genre of the youth it was once, the true essence has been lost somewhat. Is it still possible to create the quintessential punk rock record? Following the departure of lead singer Frank Carter, Gallow’s third album marks the first release on their own label, Venn Records. The band themselves describe the sound of the record as their “statement of intent, our laugh in the face of those who said Gallows were done when in reality we’re just getting started”. They certainly seem to have the rebellious spirit down, but does it translate into pure punk tunes? Musically the answer has to be an unequivocal yes. The album is dominated by the hallmarks of classic punk; the electric guitar is present in force, and is used to great effect throughout the record, with heavy sounds permeating through even the softest of tracks. Lyrically there is a most definite feeling of anarchy spread throughout the album, whether its concerning the chaos of our personal lives or the complete abandonment we feel in today’s society for any sort of morality or even the descriptions of our own inner confusions and how we deal with them. Ultimately this is a punk record out of its time. It shouldn’t work and in theory the concept doesn’t. Punk never did follow the rules though; maybe that’s what makes it so good.

The Chevin Borderland It’s a universal truth that we’ve all felt as though we’re on a shatter point at some time in our lives. It’s a fact of life and it’s often how we grow; adversity makes us better people. It seems to make sense then that being on the borders, that point where we don’t know which direction to take, would make a fantastic theme for an album then. That’s exactly what The Chevin has done with their new studio album ‘Borderland’. They have taken those points in life where we are unsure of our own path and explored them to show how it’s the shatter points in our lives that make us who we are. Musically the album strays away from traditional rock with theatrical, Matt Bellamy style vocals layered over the top of a clash of instrumentals. With pounding drums, high xylophone beats; light piano strains and dark synths mixed up into a frenzy of a storm, The Chevin never leave things calm for long, and use their music to highlight the unstable nature that is reflected in

the lyrics of this body of work. Lyrically the album strives to avoid stagnation, as opening tracks that explore the shatter points of a fast and furious young love (‘Drive’, ‘Blue Eye’s’, ‘Dirty Little Secret’) eventually give way to darker tracks exploring deeper themes such as war and peace (‘Beautiful World’) the nature of self truth ‘(Gospel’) and regret and eventual acceptance (‘Colours’, ‘So Long Summer’). Ultimately the LP itself crosses the border; it begins with personal struggle and segues into deeper, more philosophical territory. The aptly named ‘Borderland’ in fact helps the reader cross their mental borders in an intelligent, if slightly jumbled manner to help them reach new heights in their own crazy lives. You might just walk away with your head a little clearer.

Wigs And warpaint Wigs And Warpaint, 11 West One Plaza Fitzwilliam Street Sheffield, S1 4JB Tel: 0114 270 0336

At the helm of the Warpaint revolution is Maria Dallagiovanna, who at just 24 is taking the Beauty rooms by the horns. Overflowing with passion for her profession, Maria’s aim is to inject the Beauty world of Sheffield with a blast of glamour, introducing therapies you wouldn’t usually find in the city. Her vision is to bring the opulence and glitz from the more forward thinking Essex to Sheffield – vajazzles are no longer a luxury solely for the cast of TOWIE. Having previously worked at another city centre salon, where Maria was forced to juggle spray tans with another client’s pedicure whilst booking appointments, Wigs and Warpaint is a dream come true for her. Maria now has the time to focus on individual clients, booking out time slots to devote plenty of time to both the treatment and the client’s needs. She wants to make beauty treatments a luxury, not just a chore to be completed. She finds that clients open up to her, using their time in the salon not just as a beauty treatment but also to be thoroughly looked after and pampered. Showing me around the salon, Maria clearly has a love for all things Beauty. Brimming with plans to further both her skills and the services the salon can offer, she regularly attends courses to gain proficiencies in niche treatments which few salons can offer. Situated upstairs, away from the bustle and blow-drying of the hair salon downstairs, the Beauty rooms are a little lap of luxury, light, bright and, of course, glam. With a bespoke spray tan room and separate treatment room, pride of place is given to the luxury pedicure chair, something many therapists would die for!

Shellac. Maria also offers the clients downstairs a selection of expertly applied, celebrity inspired fake lash designs to go with their shiny new hairstyle. One of Maria’s best talents, however, is brow care. The salon has recently become one of the exclusive salons to offer HD (High Definition) Brows, a treatment taking the beauty world by storm, transforming bushy beasts (or even over-plucked disasters) into sleek and sexy brows to be proud of. With the HD leaflet claiming that I will ‘love my new brows so much there’ll be no turning back’, I was more than curious, so Maria showed me how it was done. After passing the patch test a week before the treatment (the dye used for HD Brows is slightly different to that of normal brow tints so no treatments are carried out without a test), Maria led me to the HD Brows station situated in the centre of the hair salon. Consisting of a luxe chair, mirror and ornate drawers holding a wealth of brow treats, I sat back in the chair and let Maria work her magic. She started with a consultation, taking a close look at my brows and analysing what needed to be done and which parts in particular needed some attention. I like a defined look with my brows, every day using an eyebrow pencil to achieve a more precise shape.

HD Brows create an individual look whether it’s extreme or natural you’re after, so Maria took my opinion, age and overall look into consideration. My eyebrows are naturally quite fair, so Maria decided to use a mid-dark brown tint, then shaped using a mix of waxing, threading and tweezing, talking me through every stage. I took a look in the mirror and was already surprised and impressed with the results – the darker colour of my brows made them look thicker and more defined, meaning I could actually leave the house without drawing them on! Next, Maria really showed off her skills, using the HD Bombshell make up palette to finish off the shape. By using just powder she created a perfectly shaped, defined brow, tailored to my personal preference and face shape. My brows looked fantastic and the colour really drew attention to my eyes! To finish off the treatment, Maria explained which products she’d used and how to maintain my brows – with regular HD visits, my brows can be improved more each time, with Maria concentrating on encouraging hair to grow where it’s needed and taming the hair which isn’t. Leaving the salon amidst a barrage of compliments I was truly impressed and brow-fantastic. The Warpaint promises to be big stuff, but it’s clear that this is down to Maria’s passion and determination to make it just a big as the Wigs.

Offering treatments with just a little bit more pizazz than the norm, Maria’s skillset includes Crystal pedicures, semi-permanent mascara, Minx and CND Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 46

Wigs and Warpaint – famed in Sheffield for creating some of the best ‘Wigs’ in the hairdressing world, but what about the ‘Warpaint’? The Beauty side may have taken a back seat in the past but a recent relaunch promises to blast it back into the forefront.

Kinkks 374 Sharrowvale Road, Sheffield, S11 8ZP 0114 268 2325 www.kinkks.com

The latest hair sanctuary to arrive onto the Sheffield salon scene is Kinkks, having opened in July on the eclectic Sharrowvale Road. With a philosophy slightly different to most however, I was eager to try it out. ‘We understand that getting your hair done can be an important part of your social life’. Kinkks describe themselves as Hair and Social, making the trip to the hair salon a whole new experience. It’s not about rushing in for a quick trim, it’s about ensuring their clients enjoy their experience and walk away with exactly what they want. I was met by directors Natalie Hayes and Hayley Schofield, who decided to open their first salon together after accruing over 30 years of hairdressing experience between them. Kinkks itself is a contemporary, bright, stylish setting, from the minimal grey and cream design to the elegant, featheradorned wallpaper. On the menu is a full range of services for men, women and children, including cuts, colours and wedding hair. Focusing on the ‘Social’ attitude, Kinkks also offers private salon bookings for groups of friends, with late evening openings before a night out, hair and make up packages, fizz and canapés.

I moved over to the sinks for the wash. The salon uses a range of Kevin Murphy products, a product line based upon the ‘building blocks’ of great hair: strength, moisture and regeneration. Perfect for my hair type was ‘ANGEL. WASH’, a delicate recovery shampoo for fine, dry or broken hair, packed with aloe, milk proteins and olive esters to gently protect, cleansing without stripping the hair. This was followed with the ‘ANGEL.RINSE’, a conditioner for fine, dry hair, in which mango butter, cocoa butter and chamomile gently repair damaged areas, keeping hair soft and protected. Once washed, Natalie started on the cut, sectioning my hair to ensure she took off the required amount at the back and just a snip off the sides, levelling up the overall length. She then rubbed in a dollop of ‘ANTI.GRAVITY’, an oil free volumiser and texturiser to add control to flyaways, helping to hold in the style. To boost some life into my fine hair, Natalie finished by blowdrying with a large, round, bristled brush, then finished by smoothing through with wide GHDs. The result? Soft, sleek tresses, glossy and much healthier looking than before! By levelling up the base, my hair appears thicker than before, giving the sides chance to catch up with the back. I left Kinkks with a glowing mane, vowing to shower it with some well-deserved TLC to keep it that way. Tue - Wed: 10:00 - 18:00 Thu - Fri: 10:00 - 20:00 Sat: 09:00 - 17:00

Natalie led me to a cutting station and took a look at my hair. My locks had grown longer at the back than at the front and sides, having lain victim to heat and styling damage. Natalie suggested we cut about 4cm off the back to level it up with the rest, but with me being reluctant to snip off some long-awaited growth, we compromised with about 2cm.

Smithfield Skate Plaza One of the Steel City’s best kept secrets, Smithfield Skate Plaza - situated just outside the city centre on Smithfield Industrial Estate - is an indoor BMX, Skateboard and Scooter friendly skate park which welcomes all ages and abilities. Funded by Paul O’Donnell, Smithfield Skate Plaza was constructed by Alex Riley, with the help of world renown rider, Joe Cox, with the intention of creating a social environment that expands on Sheffield’s existing skate scene whilst offering something fresh and creative in terms of ramp set-ups and styles.

“Built by skateboarders and BMXers, for skateboarders and BMXers”

Smithfield Skate Plaza opened its doors last month under the management of well known rider Louis Hogg and has been met with overwhelming enthusiasm from the skate community. Unlike so many typical warehouse parks, Smithfield offers a warm, welcoming environment, with cloakrooms, purpose built toilets, and even a café serving refreshments throughout the day. Built by skateboarders and BMXers, for skateboarders and BMXers, Smithfield Skate Plaza has been constructed with the singular purpose of offering the most rewarding and adventurous experience possible. Divided into two rooms, each with a selection of rails, boxes and ramps, and moveable features to get creative. The first room consists of a street style plaza set up, whilst the second veers more towards the traditional park, with flowing lines, wall rides and jump boxes. With countless years of extreme sports experience between them, the staff at Smithfield Skate Park couldn’t be more helpful and supportive in offering not only riding advice, but technical expertise and first-aid for those inevitable bumps and bruises. They also stock a variety of parts, ranging from inner tubes, to high end frames, and everything in-between, with an in-house mechanic able to fit any new parts then and there. Of course, with a great skate park comes great responsibility, and the team at Smithfield are keen to give something back to the community. They are endeavouring to encourage local youngsters and school groups to the park, offering a safer and more communal environments than local street sites, and with a comfy chill out area and food and drink on offer throughout the day, parents have a comfortable place to unwind while the young ‘uns skate. There are even talks of offering classes to new riders, in a bid to encourage a healthy, active hobby for local youth. Membership to the Smithfield Skate Plaza costs £10, with a free session and reduced costs from then on, whilst non-members prices range from £4 and hour to £12 for the day.

City Break | Seville

- Seville City Break

When one thinks of Seville, the image of oranges comes to mint, but there is so much more to the fourth biggest city in Spain besides a citric fruit. According to legend, the city, having been established by the famed Hercules, is one steeped in history through Roman and Moorish occupations up to modern day, and the bustling capital of Andalusia is now home to over three quarters of a million people along its iconic Guadalquivir River banks. With a date of birth of just over 2,200 years ago, the only Spanish city with an inland port is one that never sleeps.

Attractions

With stunning architecture, phenomenal gardens and that quintessential Andalucian lifestyle, it’s hard to beat the attractions that the Flamenco dancing city has to offer. The Alcázar Gardens: No trip to Seville would be complete without first taking a stroll through the Alcázar region of the city, with art and architecture from arabic to gothic. Yet the jewel in the crown of the area is the breath-taking gardens where the palace of the late kings of Seville took their daily stroll. The expansive green area contains pools, fountains, recessed seats and tiny courtyards. If you are visiting in Spring the orange plants tend to drop their fruits and a scent of marmalade and a world within a world experience can be had. The Plaza de Espana: Originally built in 1928, the square is one of the most authentic examples of a true Renaissance revival style in Spanish Architecture. With rich mosaics, museums and the tiled “Alcoves of the Provinces”, it is no wonder the plaza has been used not only as a backdrop to many a holiday photo but also in movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, the Star Wars franchise and, most recently, British comic actor, Sasha Baron Cohen’s, The Dictator. Torre del Oro: The golden dodecagonal military tower that over looks the Guadalquivir River is as eye catching as its name suggests. Having kept watch for over 700 years the watch tower is now used as a marine and military museum.

Issue 46 | Chic Lifestyle Magazine

Its current role is a more subdued one than in the past, when it also served as a prison, an imperial store house and as a home to the mistress of King Pedro I. Triana District: The Triana district is a quaint and secluded area of the city on what has been described as an almost island. It is connected to Seville’s bustling city centre by the Isabel II bridge and is famous for two of the most popular religious celebrations in the city called La Esperanza de Triana (Our Lady of Hope of Triana) and El Cachorro ( The Puppy). These events occur during the Holy Week processions, and churches and religion have left a strong imprint on the area. Sherry wine is popular here among locals and tourists alike with traditional roasted sardines available throughout the region.

Food

Whether it’s traditional Spanish food you are after or something more continental, Seville has restaurants to keep the hungriest and the most picky content with fresh produce, combined with rich and diverse menus in a city that is bustling with vibrant and exciting eateries. La Pincelada; Competitive prices, local cuisine and fantastic location, this restaurant has it all. Located in the heart of the city, the local restaurant is famous for its mini-burgers and well known risotto. With a vast range of local and continental wines as well as delicious tapas, La Pincelada is the

City Break | Seville

perfect location for your first meal in Seville to fully soak up the flavour and atmosphere of the city. Vineria San Telmo: Located a stones throw from the Jardin de Alcázar this quirky restaurant is one that requires a reservation. With competitive prices and irresistible tapas it is the perfect location to bring a family when visiting Seville. The restaurant’s name and quality attracts locals and tourists alike, offering large and colourful salads for those who want a break from mainly fish and meat dishes. La Mojigata: Cozy, romantic and tucked away from the hustle and bustle of life, this is a cheaper alternative to most restaurants in the city, as well as offering something very different. All wines are house wines and there is no such thing as a regular serving of tapas; all the food is creative and full of variety which extends to original servings of sushi. With helpful and welcoming staff this is a lovely location to see a quieter, more relaxed Seville dining experience, with the moussed chicken liver ‘Ferrero Rocher’ dish one of the finest dishes on offer. Bar Las Golondrinas: If you are looking to be totally immersed in the city cuisine and not see another tourist then this is your bar. With a great lunch menu and fresh food to be had between a downstairs tapas bar and a more fulfilled dining experience in the upstairs restaurant, this venue will keep you happy for three meals a day. For vegetarian diners there is a strong selection of “sin carne” options, and if you are looking to be fed and happy for not much expense and without much effort, then this is your place.

Nightlife

With over 70,000 students, clubs, bars and venues can be found on every street and on every corner. From heavy dance clubs to quirky little traditional bars, this city has it all to keep all ages and interests happy. El Tremendo, a cerveceria located in Santa Catalina which specialises in one thing and one thing only cold beer. While not the most eye catching location from the outside, this is a famous watering hole in Seville. With larger glasses than other bars and venues and prices of under one euro, El Tremendo is a common place for a beer after work or to get the evening started in fine form. While the bartenders often offer tapas, there’s nothing hot or cooked offered. The bar does serve Mojama, a salty dried fish snack and one that is sure to make you thirsty. La Bodeguita Antigua and Los Soportales Plaza Salvador: After a number of recent major renovations, both of these iconic and fun bars are open for service. Both venues are great locations for a cold beer, a plate of olives and or a little portion of jamón. Live music is very popular and many local vendors sell everything from toys and trinkets for children to snacks to keep you ticking over. With a great buzz and atmosphere in the area you are sure to feel the true energy and ambience of a Seville night out.

Motoring Car Review

There are many things I like about this car and just a couple of tiny things I don’t. - Kia Cee’d Sportswagon 1.6 CRDi 3 -

It really is quite astonishing how quickly Kia has risen from producing dull budget motors to making desirable cars that are now serious competition to the likes of Ford and Volkswagen.

character: adventurous, sporty, modern and technologically advanced, but with even more of the practicality and value which made its predecessor a success in the British fleet and business market.

Only last year the new version of the Picanto was launched in the UK; then the latest Rio and, more recently, the gorgeous new Optima - and I haven’t even mentioned the sexy Sportage SUV or the latest Cee’d. I’ve been to many of these car launches set up for the motoring press, and I can honestly say Kia seems unstoppable in its quest to ‘wow’ the European motoring market.

Like its forerunner, it was designed and engineered at Kia’s Frankfurt design studios and technical centre, and is made at the company’s Žilina plant in Slovakia, which is where I flew to test the car before it hit British showrooms.

Now, just three months after the arrival of the stylish allnew Kia cee’d hatchback, another model joins the family – the cee’d Sportswagon. Replacing the former Cee’d SW, it introduces a fresh model name to reflect the new car’s

40

www.asianchic.co.uk

I drove the 126 bhp 1.6 CRDi 3 version. Its steering is direct and well-weighted, and the six speed manual gearbox is smooth. The Cee’d Sportswagon won’t blow you away with excitement but then you’d be naïve to expect an estate car with a mid capacity diesel engine to do that. What the Kia does do, though, is transport you from A to B with minimum fuss in an economical, comfortable and practical way.

And I don’t use the word ‘practical’ lightly. This car actually offers more luggage capacity than the majority of the competition – 528 litres up to the load cover with all seats upright and 1642 litres up to the roof with the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat. This means motors such as the Ford Focus Estate and Golf Estate now have a serious rival. Looks-wise I was struck by how attractive the front of the car is. LED lights give the Cee’d a very streetwise, modern appearance, while the rest of the Sportswagon simply appears stylish without appearing ‘boxy’ – as is the case with some estate cars. The dash material (which resembles ‘elephant hide’ in looks, texture and colour) doesn’t quite match up to the pleasing aesthetics of the exterior, but everything is well screwed together and the switches and dials are clear and logically set out. The doors and the boot close with a reassuring ‘thunk’ rather than a clang - again,

an indication of a marque that has evolved well beyond ‘budget’. The turn-around in Kia’s new look is thanks to the company’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. His plan with the Cee’ds sportswagon was to “build on the strengths that made the first-generation model such a success, but with added emotion and character and improved proportions and stance”. I think it’s fair to say that he’s achieved that. The Cee’d Sportswagon is available in four trim grades – named ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘4’, with the option of a ‘4 Tech’ version. As with every Kia, the latest model comes with a fully transferable seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

Travel Guide

The Kingdom Of Cambodia

The fact that 50% of Cambodia’s population is aged under 22 shows perfectly the devastation this beautiful country has suffered in recent years. After the Vietnam War and then the tyranny that was The Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodia is still slowly recovering. Everything about this country is remarkable: from the friendly people who have such a tremendous sense of humour despite the horrors they have seen, to the majestic temples of Angkor, to the extraordinary everyday life of the families living in floating villages. Every minute you spend here is eye opening, awe-inspiring and as far from English culture as you can imagine. This is a place for an adventure; if you want a relaxing beach holiday this perhaps isn’t for you. You can fly with Thai Airways to Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh from London for £750-£1000 return. Alternatively you can fly to Bangkok, Thailand for £600+ return and travel by bus over the border to start your Cambodian travels in Siem Reap. US dollars are used pretty much everywhere in Cambodia. You will only be given Riel, their own currency, as small change because the value of it is so low. UK passport holders can purchase a Cambodia e-visa for $25. This allows travel within the country for 30 days and can be purchased from www.cambodianembassy.org.uk. Travelling independently through Cambodia is possible using local buses. However if you want to remove the stress of haggling down transport

35

www.asianchic.co.uk

prices and make sure you are travelling as safely as possible you could always go as part of a tour. Gap Adventures offers The Cambodia Experience package for £487, which includes a local guide and 8 nights accommodation and breakfast. All details are on www.gadventures.com. Most trips through Cambodia begin with Angkor Wat, by far the biggest tourist attraction in the country. Located about 5km from the town of Siem Reap, Angkor is the largest Hindu temple complex in the world. Built by King Suryavarman in the 12th Century as the capital of the Khmer Empire it really is something to behold. A day pass to Angkor is $20. For an extra $20 or so you can get a tour in an air-conditioned bus or for around $7 – $10 a rather uncomfortable tuck-tuck to take you round. The very energetic and thrifty can hire bicycles for just a couple of dollars but as the average monthly temperature can be as high as 35 degrees centigrade and some of the temples are great distances apart, this can be exhausting work. Angkor Wat is the largest temple and the central point to the complex. The best time to view this majestic piece of architecture is at sunrise; the reflection of the towers in the lake surrounding the

temple will make for some of the most impressive pictures you will ever take. Don’t worry if you don’t have time for breakfast; this area is full of small stands selling western style breakfasts. Every stand is named after a big Hollywood movie. “James”, the proprietor of the 007 stand, has particularly brilliant customer service. Ask him to show you his trick of photographing the sunrise through his sunglasses which gives them a much more impressive (if slightly unnatural) reddish glow. The second most jaw-dropping sight in Angkor is the temple of Ta Prohm: recognisable to most from the set of Lara Croft:Tomb Raider. The huge roots which have dominated the stone work have been left exactly as they were found and make a surreal sight. Next make sure you see the temple of Bayon; Everything about this country is remarkable: from the friendly people who have such a tremendous sense of humour despite the horrors they have seen, to the majestic temples of Angkor, to the extraordinary everyday life of the families living in floating villages. Every minute you spend here is eye opening, awe-inspiring and as far from English culture as you can imagine. You can fly with Thai Airways to Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh from London for £750-£1000 return. You will only be given Riel, their own currency, as small change because the value of it is so low. Be aware that all over Angkor you will be harassed by small and very cute Cambodian children selling postcards and bracelets. They will plead with you to buy their special gifts to ‘let them go to school’, however most charities discourage buying from these children as it will only encourage the parents to carry on sending them out to work. To visit Angkor most visitors will stay in Siem Reap where, because of the huge number of tourists, new luxury hotels are popping up every month. Accommodation in Siem Reap and indeed the rest of Cambodia is incredibly cheap:backpackers can get a dorm room at the highly recommended Garden Village Guest House for $1 a night and there are hotels to suit every price range on www.angkorhotels.org. In the evening make sure you take a walk down ‘Pub Street’ which, lined with restaurants and bars of every variety, is aptly named. The Temple Club has nightly performances of traditional Cambodian dancing and does a great Amok curry: a local, coconut flavoured curry of river fish or chicken served inside a hollowed out coconut. Don’t expect to pay more than $10 for a full meal and drinks. 20-cent glasses of Angkor beer are advertised outside every doorway and the intoxicating yet tasty cocktail ‘Welcome to Cambodia’ is definitely worth a try. Make a visit to the legendary Angkor What? bar before you head home to bed andpick up a free t-shirt when you buy any jug of beer. An extra day in Siem Reap is much needed; there’s lots to see aside from Angkor. Chong Khneas floating village can be reached by taking a trip with one of the many boat operators you’ll find waiting by the edge of the Tonle Sap lake. The brightly painted houses floating on the lake are lovely to see, the people are so used to tourists passing by they will barely notice you as they go about fishing or washing in the lake. Most boats stop at the crocodile “farm” which is essentially a floating gift shop with a pit of miserable looking crocodiles floating in rubbish which children are allowed to urinate into. This has to be endured before you can go to more pleasant and enlightening sights like the local school.

you depart with an eased conscience. Run mainly by Australian volunteers, they are always glad to have visitors in the classroom to help the pupils practice their English, and the pupils themselves are so excited to talk to you. Afterwards you can eat at their restaurant which is staffed entirely by pupils from the school. As tourism is the biggest industry in the country, hospitality and English are some of the most valuable skills the school teaches. Your money is well spent here on an evening meal. Visit www.newhopecambodia.com for more information. After Siem Reap travel on to the capital, Phnom Penh. If you’re lucky the six hour bus journey will be air-conditioned and Mr Bean will be playing on the TV screen. The Cambodians are huge fans of comedy; their stand up comedians are famous across South-East Asia. Security Prison 21 (S21) is perhaps the most important place to visit in Phnom Penh. Once a high school, it was used by the Khmer Rouge during 1975 -79 as a prison. Although the place isn’t well decked out with information boards or tour guides, the shackles attached to the beds, blood stains on the floor and rooms filled wall-to-wall with photographs of the men, women and children who were tortured and imprisoned within its walls is more powerful than any museum display. The Killing Field of Choeung Ek, where most prisoners of S21 were sent to be killed, should be next on your list to visit. There is a powerful audio commentary to listen to as you walk around and most harrowing of all are the teeth and small segments of bone that lie on top of the grass-topped mass graves, washed up every time it rains and collected periodically by the park wardens. At the centre of the field is a commemorative Stupa filled with the skulls of just a fraction of the victims killed here. To take your mind off the horrors you have seen, take the opportunity to go shopping once you are back in the centre of the city. The Russian Market is great for cheap jewellery and clothes and the huge dome shaped Central Market is home to the famous live insect and fried insect stall. If you’re lucky you might get to watch another tourist eat

a fried tarantula or if you’ve had enough pints of Angkor beer you might feel brave enough to do it yourself! The top floor of the Sorya Mall is a huge roller skating rink - a great way to spend an hour or so. From here you also get a panoramic view of the city. Sadly this puts into perspective how damaged much of the city is: not much escaped the Vietnam War and it is still being slowly rebuilt. After a couple of days here head south to Shinoukville on the coast for some beachside relaxation. Here the beach is lined with bars:perfect for sitting on the sand sipping cocktails and eating freshly caught and barbecued Barramundi. However, the beach is not a place to sunbathe and relax in the daytime. Patrolling the beach are throngs of Cambodia’s 14-16 year olds, all determined to sell you a bracelet. Tell one your name and promise you will buy a bracelet later and they will remember you, they will be very offended and sometimes get quite aggressive if you then go and buy from someone else. One young girl who calls herself ‘Beyonce’ is a particular one to watch out for. To escape the teenagers, take a boat trip out to the surrounding islands to find mercifully deserted beaches. Some can only be reached after trekking through jungle for half an hour, dodging the huge millipedes that cover the paths. But you are rewarded with scenes of pure paradise and warm clear waters. These trips will also take you snorkelling, however much of the coral in this area has become very damaged. In the evenings Shinoukville is alive with the backpacker party scene, the Utopia bar even has its own Full Moon Party complete with plastic buckets of alcohol. One visit to Cambodia will have you desperate to return. Right now it has the feel of a place that is just being explored, but tourism is growing at a tremendous rate and it won’t be long before it catches up with Thailand. For now The Kingdom Of Cambodia remains a place of wonder and mystery: it’s a privilege to be one of the first generations able to explore it.

Images: www.captainkimo.com

Whilst travelling back from the lake you will witness some of the areas of Siem Reap that the wealth of tourism hasn’t yet managed to reach. The road is lined with handmade shacks of wood and corrugated iron: the homes of Vietnamese refugees who are still living in the country illegally. Skinny children knock on bus windows gesturing to their mouths that they are hungry. Nothing makes you appreciate what you have like seeing families who own nothing but a leaking handmade shelter smaller than your garden shed. New Hope Cambodia is a charity based in Siem Reap which has started its own school and social care scheme. Pay them a visit before leaving to help www.asianchic.co.uk

You look through your wardrobe and you realise that there’s nothing there that you would feel comfortable with, that defines who you are and the way you live your life? If you’re like Annisa Maryam, you take the bull by the horns, and find those clothes for yourself! Annisa Maryam has actually gone further than that by opening her very own high end Middle Eastern fashion boutique on St Margaret’s Road, Bradford. Annisa Maryam, who describes herself as ‘not a trend follower’, instead relying on ‘her own sense of style’ became a practising Muslim, and in the process of doing so realised that there was nothing out there for women like her. She instead looked to the glamorous fashion houses of Dubai for inspiration and brought the feel of one of the worlds most fabulous locations over to Bradford. Annisa Maryam went on to found Sheikha with the support from her Mum, her very own fashion store which stocks clothes with a distinctive Middle Eastern style and specifically authentic fabrics, yet still managing to bring a touch of glamour to the everyday wardrobe. In particular Sheikha stocks a range of Abayas (which are all hand embroidered) from abayas for everyday use, to abayas that are embroidered, decorated with Swarovski crystals, and beaded embellished abayas. Sheikha also stocks dresses, kaftans, belly dance outfits and accessories, hair & hijaab jewellery, Sheikha however doesn’t just offer one extra service, but a whole host of them as there is a special hair and makeup consultation service and also an advice service for Brides on their special day. As well as this Sheikha offers a one on one tutorial service on how to wear a headscarf to best suit your sense of style and offer a support service for those looking for the right outfit to wear when making the pilgrimage. Most importantly; with their open by appointment service it’s possible to catch them out of their usual opening hours. Sheikha are there to help you with any fashion emergency, whenever you need them! With an additional 10 percent discount for students and specialised Arabian Hair and Makeup artistry for weddings and parties, Sheikha are there to ensure that you feel comfortable without loosing that touch of sparkle and glamour in the process! www.asianchic.co.uk

Paul Sinha What do you get when you mix a doctor with a comedian? No, not a load of medical jokes, you get Paul Sinha, the British-Indian comedian who has spent the last few years climbing the comedy ladder and earning a fair amount of critical plaudits en route. You perhaps know him best as ‘the funny one’, from ITV’s much loved quiz show, The Chase, but Paul is a seasoned pro on the stand up circuit, cracking up clubs across the globe with his self-deprecating style. The comedian - who has appeared over recent years in such TV shows as ‘Edinburgh and Beyond’, ‘World Stands up’, ‘Comedy Shuffle’ and ‘Comedy Cuts’, is a very busy man, so we jumped at the chance to get inside the mind of Britain’s best comedy-quizzer. Read on to hear Paul’s thoughts on GB’s Olympic success, his passion for quizzing and the question we all wanted to know: who would win a Chaser quiz-off? Hi Paul, how are you? Have you had a good summer? It has been a brilliant summer, thanks. I have spent it either gigging, travelling, or engorging on an amazing summer of sport. Autumn finds me in a great mood.

How would you define your style of comedy? It is hard to describe your own style, but luckily I have been reviewed many times. Self-deprecating storytelling appears to be a phrase often used, and I think it is correct. I would stress though that I have always had proper jokes as well!

Following on from your ‘Sinha Games’ broadcast on BBC Radio 4, how were the 2012 Games for you? Any highlights? I realised some time ago the degree to which the Olympics and the Paralympics were going to be a once in a lifetime occasion. So I threw caution to the wind, spent lots of hard earned money on seeing as many things as possible. It was remarkable, unique in the way opinions were almost universally positive. As for the highlight, being at the Olympic Stadium watching Jessica Ennis start her heptathlon in such electrifying style was truly memorable. Sheffield should fight for her right to be canonized.

How has your Indian heritage informed your material, if at all? Your heritage always informs your humour, particularly with this new show, as many of the tales are of my own family. But it would be wrong to say that I am a stereotypical “Asian comedian”. My background is a very specific medicine dominated West Bengal background, with its own idiosyncrasies.

You will be playing at Sheffield Memorial Hall this October as part of the Last Laugh Festival – What can audiences expect from your appearance? “Last Christmas” is a new show that I wrote with the festival in mind. For anyone who has seen any of my previous shows, it continues in the gag driven storytelling style that I have previously brought to the festival, and looks at life, death and love through the lens of a lovelorn “Gaysian” doctor/comedian/ professional quizzer. People will know you best as one of the Chasers on ITV’s The Chase, how did you become a Chaser? I have been taking part in high level quizzes for a number of years, fulfilling a childhood dream to take it seriously. As a result I had met the other three Chasers on several occasions, and it was my good fortune that when a gap became available, they recommended me. I consider myself blessed, because I really love the show. You’re a trained GP, how did the move from medicine to comedy come about? The move from medicine to comedy was a gradual one. I spent many years doing both jobs pretty much full time, but as age started to set in and the bones grew wearier, it became apparent I was going to have to make a choice. Carpe diem, as Robin Williams once said.

You’re also a dedicated quizzer – what comes first, quizzing or comedy? My television quiz career is temporary. I am realistic enough to know that. Comedy is the dream, comedy is the reason that I am where I am. You’ve worked on radio and television alongside your stand-up career, covering a variety of topics – what have been some of your highlights? I am quite a shallow man. My highlights have really been the opportunity to work with or simply to meet people whom I already admired. Being a massive Liverpool FC fan, I have been starstruck by meeting Jamie Redknapp and Dietmar Hamann. But working with Stewart Lee, one of my comedy heroes, on two of his television shows has been the big highlight. Who would win a general knowledge quiz between the Chasers? We get asked that a lot. The honest answer is that we all have our own strengths and weaknesses and it would depend on the format of the quiz. What are your plans for the future? I have never been one to plan too far ahead. I am looking forward to fulfilling one of my big life dreams to watch England versus India at Eden Gardens Kolkata in December. Other than that my plans involve drinking less, losing weight and learning more facts on my weak subjects. www.paulsinha.com www.asianchic.co.uk
