Ben Folds Live

Make a date for the unmissable Ben Folds at the O2 Academy on February 26th.

Twinkling the ivories in the friskiest of fashions, American singer-songwriter Ben Folds comes to town on February 26th. This new tour sees Folds pedal his wares across America, Europe and Australia promoting his new album-a collaboration with acclaimed English novelist Nick Hornby (High Fidelity, About a Boy). Since going solo from Ben Folds Five in ’99 Folds has released a string of successful albums. Perhaps though, he is more well known here for his collaborations- notably Regina Spektor hit ‘You Don’t Know Me’-than his talent for Producing well-crafted, eclectic albums. Those in the know who saw Folds enrapture the City Hall stage back in ’08 are sure to be present as he returns to our fair city to exude his geeky charm, quirky piano antics and ardent lyrics.

Restless Time: Art in Britain 1914 - 1945

Chic’s haunt of preference The Showroom introduces the new Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams) film ‘Biutiful’ to its programme of World Cinema treats this month. Gaining critical acclaim at Cannes for the film’s central performance from Javier Bardem, the film is a gritty and heartfelt portrayal of a man in free fall. Circumstance prompts Uxbal (Bardem) to be acutely aware of his own mortality, thus this underworld figure and single father is forced to seek redemption.

The 20th century was one of the most tumultuous periods of destructiveness and creativity in Europe’s history. Momentous and brutal, yet inspiring a generation of artists to respond to the electric pace of change. As an influx of Europe’s displaced came to Britain, so came an influx of new ideas which influenced and invigorated what was to become Modern British Art.

View this critic’s choice foreign film at The Showroom from Jan 28th- Feb 3rd

This predominately Spanish language film is an earnest, harrowing portrayal of a man’s journey as he attempts to reconcile with a past love and secure a future for his children whilst also facing his own impending demise. 8

So if you possess enviably fast responses and are partial to what the British upper classes referred to as ‘’wiff-waff’’ in the 1880s, then head down and let the professionals show you how it’s done. Over 50 nations are competing but if you want to back British, see Andrew Baggely and Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford return with the hopes of repeating their excellent performances at the Commonwealth Games.

The Breath of Life

Isla Blair and Patricia Hodge star in performances from February 16th -26th.

Take in ‘The Breath of Life’ one of the three plays showing at the Crucible theatre as part of The David Hare Season- a major retrospective of one of post- war Britain’s most prolific and influential playwrights. Celebrated novelist Frances Beale arrives at Madeline Palmer’s home in search of the story which will explain how over forty years previously their lives became inextricably linked. Reflecting on their lives over the course of an evening, the two women - united by their love for the same man-share what is a witty, brutal and poignant story by playwright Hare. Oscar nominated for his screenplay adaptations of ‘The Hours’ and ‘The Reader’, Hare is also a well renowned screenwriter and director.

Escaping from a French asylum to the stage of the City Hall, the world’s weirdest and wildest entertainers from the ‘Circus of Horrors’ imprison the stage on the 28th. Relentlessly touring the world earning a cult status this menagerie of oddities are in the city celebrating fifteen years treading the boards. Bringing their new show ‘The Four Chapters from Hell’ which sees a gaggle of lunatics journey through Mexico’s celebrated ‘Day of the Dead’,Victorian London and into the futuristic civilization of 2020A-slaughtering all in their path- the show promises to be a ‘’shocking’’ ‘’fangtastic’’ expansion of their acclaimed ‘The Asylum’ and ‘Day of the Dead’ shows. A bizarre and beautiful blend of music and maniacal theatre, this is a unique ‘cirque du freak’ not for the feint hearted. Freakish Bloodthirsty Burlesque

WANDERLUST|BERMUDA BERMUDA With Sheffield temperatures feeling more like those of Siberia this winter, it’s left many of us simpering for warmer climes. No doubt as you’ve been trudging through the snow your mind has summoned tempting thought-dreams of turquoise waters and scorching rays. Your olfactory senses have sporadically (and cruelly) wafted that reminiscent hint of Piz Buin under your sniffling schnoz. This is because your subconscious is searching for somewhere to thaw, to dispel the shivers, somewhere to crisp its dripping snout, a haven to banish its ashen complexion. Your subconscious is telling your conscious self to hop on a plane and head to the bountiful beaches of Bermuda.

Since the recent travel chaos appears to have been quelled somewhat, such a thought isn’t so heady. Lugging your pasty corpse across the globe may seem like a chore and then some, but with Bermuda only a six and a half hour flight from Gatwick there’s barely time for a movie and a couple of G&T’s before you’ve landed in Bermuda’s capital Hamilton. “Bountiful beaches” The warmth that greets you upon deplaning is not only that of Bermuda’s subtropical climes but of the people that give this island its heart. Something in that air renders them perpetually pleasant. Located off the east coast of the United States, Bermuda is actually the oldest and most populated remaining

British overseas territory and the time difference of only four hours leaves jet lag whimpering away in search of another victim. Due to Bermuda’s semi-tropical climate, this island –a bridged union of approximately 180 smaller islands- enjoys only two seasons: spring and summer. April is the start of the summer “Opulence” season, known locally as ‘Beach and Sizzle’ where temperatures can soar to an average of 85 degrees. The scorching temperatures stay until September and it is between these times that you can most enjoy the eclectic array of activities that make summer in Bermuda so special. Accommodation on the island is varied. Choose between luxury resorts offering first-rate leisure facilities such as spa treatments, fine dining and sporting activities or smaller hotels with the intimacy and charm of a B&B, to quaint, uniquely Bermudian cottages.

For those opting for opulence, Grotto Bay Beach resort must be considered. With its own beach, golf course, tennis courts, spa and gourmet restaurants it makes for a high-end holiday destination. Set amongst a lush tropical estate featuring fresh water caves, acres of woodland preserves and along the turquoise coast of Bailey’s Bay, it is Bermuda’s top water sports “Dusky pink sands” destination. A refreshing snorkel in the Grotto caves is a must and fishfeeding time at the Grotto beach is a hectic but unmissable experience for anyone submerged within the mass of frenzied fish. Bookings to Bermuda can be made with confidence as many hotels participate in the ‘Hurricane Guarantee Program’ where cancellations due to severe weather warnings can be made without charge. The coral reefs wash powder-soft, dusky pink sands to shore like no other, for which Bermuda is famous. Beaches to note are Tobacco bay, a cove which is family friendly and perfect for snorkeling. The abundance of parrot, angel and flounder fish is mesmerising. No doubt you’ll also see barracuda, stingrays, squids and a whole menagerie of tiny fish who like to have a nibble on your tanning flesh.

18

WANDERLUST|BERMUDA Horseshoe bay is most certainly Bermuda’s most famous and popular beach and arguably one of the most beautiful. Stretching out with its pink sands, this beach has the most amenities of any beach in Bermuda. Seemingly calm, the sea on this side of the island is prone to strong undercurrents, thus a lifeguard is always on duty during the busy seasons.

If you’re all beached out there are plenty of sand-free places to explore. The town of St George’s is a World Heritage site and a picturesque colonial town. A maze of byways with a lush backdrop of flora leads you to Fairylands. It’s an affluent residential area with spectacular homes and views of the ocean.

“Unearthed treasures”

“Warm seas”

There are more than 300 shipwrecks in the waters surrounding Bermuda with more than 20 close to the shoreline. Hazardous coral reefs in the North Atlantic waters are blamed, rather than the infamous ‘Bermuda Triangle’ myth. These underwater relics are a haven for divers who travel from across the globe in the hopes of finding unearthed treasures. If you left your snorkel at home then you can explore these historical sights from dry land at the Bermuda Maritime Museum.

There is an abundance of nature reserves and parks in Bermuda but you don’t have to venture far to feast your eyes on its fauna- notably the whistling frogs and gigantic grasshoppers who like to greet you at breakfast.

Bermuda is where the frogs will whistle you lullabies, where crabs cross the street in their scuttles and where if you’re lucky, the call of a humpback whale will rouse you from your slumber. For during March and April these huge marine mammals pass through Bermuda’s waters as they migrate North. Various trips to see them frolic in their natural habitat are arranged during this period.

With this in mind, for those who have a fishy palette The Barracuda Grill in Hamilton is the place for generous portions of freshly prepared seafood. The Grill also boasts an extensive wine menu.

To eat out in Bermuda can be expensive, but how often can you say you’ve been swimming amongst the same squid that by that same evening are now swimming in garlic on your dinner plate?

The Pickled Onion is a popular meeting place for Bermuda’s opulent and sophisticated crowd. Serving wine and a wide range of cocktails it has prime location overlooking Hamilton Harbour. Whether you want to explore the ocean to the point of pruning, take in some history or simply bask under the rays, Bermuda is the remedy for dispelling that winter gloom. For when (on rare occasion) it does rain in Bermuda, the showers are short and the warm seas make for the perfect retreat.

With 2011 now in full swing there’s never been a better time to pamper yourself. Although i need no excuses to get out there and see just what delights Sheffield is hiding in its salons, im here to bring you whats hot and whats not and where to go on the hair and beauty scene. This month i pop into House Creations in Walkley for a wax, and Brownes on Devision street for some love of my locks, in addition i do some research into the latest treatment to hit the salons The Brazilion Blowout, as well as giving you some detox tips to get over that Christmas indulgence. Brazilion Blowout Suffer unmanageable hair no more; sleek and soft tresses are here via the latest frizz banishing solution- the Brazilian Blowout. Recently landing to the UK from the

“Banish frizz” sunny skies of LA, the Brazilian Blowout treatment is a combination of amino acids and protein, which is applied and immediately absorbed into the hair. Plus an added boost of pure keratin. Can’t stay away from the straighteners, hairdryer, curling tongues and colour? All these hair sins spell bad news for your locks and result in dry hair, split ends, breakage and dull locks. Regular off-the-shelf conditioners may appear to work after one wash but in fact they just shine

the surface. Only offering a short term solution. However, richer conditioners and hair masks with added protein actually nourish the hair from within, repairing damaged strands and

“The results are spectacular” strengthening the hair length through. Once the treatment has been left on for 30 minutes or more - depending on the hair type - the hair is blow dried to seal the treatment in, straightened, washed again and finally blow dried again. The results are spectacular; shiny, sleek hair with zero frizz. Even when left to dry naturally results can last for a whopping 12 weeks.

Detox Mounds of pudding and far too many New Years shots…the party season certainly takes its toll on your body. You know what that means- detox. Step away from the Quality Street. All that over indulgence will ultimately

It’s not all about treadmills though, for what goes in must come out and after the Christmas input your insides will no doubtfully be feeling rather sorry for themselves.

“Over Indulgence”

“Zero fast food”

result in dull skin, a spotty complexion. You’ll feel bloated and sluggish but perhaps most undesirable of all- those few extra pounds. Detoxing is more than just a superficial remedy. It actually aids in flushing out the toxins from deep within the body. Cleansing and refreshing, it results in a much healthier you!

Try to stick to a menu of zero alcohol and caffeine. Abstain from fast food, instead replacing that with five fruits or vegetables. Opt for light meals and shy away from too many carbs.

New gym memberships soar in January- but don’t fall into the trap of joining if you don’t intend to stick it out. Getting started is no doubt the hardest part, especially after a lazy Christmas spent lounging on the sofa. But the hard work will pay off. 22

BEAUTIFY|REVIEW

House Creations For a top to toe January make over I popped over to House Creations in Walkley to see just what tricks they have up their sleeves. The Treatment As an experienced beauty therapist Claire suggested I try a bikini and leg wax. Being a wax virgin myself, preferring my trusty razor, it was with trepidation that I stepped into the treatment room.

Claire worked her way around, and I’m not going to lie, the further down she got the more it hurt! But soon it was over and Claire made me feel comfortable throughout. She gave me some oil to put on to soothe the area and look after the skin, this is because after a wax skin is sensitive and open to infection. Next to be waxed the legs, a much less painful experience! First lying on my back, Claire de-haired the fronts, then I lay on my front in order for her to wax the backs. In a whiz of wax this was complete. The result? Smooth, soft and hairless. This should last for about 2 weeks due to it being my first time; if I continue with the waxing the hairs become finer and grow back more slowly and can last between two to eight weeks dependent on hair growth cycle. With very little drama involved I’d definitely recommend House Creations – Claire made me feel comfortable and was very efficient. The Therapists Manager and owner Claire has over 17 years salon experience within the beauty industry and is City and Guilds qualified. April specialises in eye treatments, aroma massage techniques and facials. Special offers from April include lash extensions from £10, lash tinting from £5, aroma massage £20, aroma facial £10 and Indian head massage for £10. After removing my clothes from the waist down, I lay on the bed and Claire prepared the wax. Spreading on the warm wax with a spatula, she then pressed down a small sheet of paper on the area then whipped it off, whipping out the hairs as they stuck to the wax. Having been dreading the pain, it wasn’t too bad!

FEATURE | SMART ART GALLERIES Mike Jackson

Amongst the offerings this season at the Smart Art Galleries are Mike Jackson and his ‘New Perspec-tives’ exhibition coming to the gallery with works in watercolour, acrylic and giclee (digital ink-jet prints).Born to a working class family in 1960’s Manchester, Jackson left school with few qualifications but with a great love of art. Having been told that he ought to learn a trade as ‘something to fall back on’ he became a butcher. Subsequently, after what he describes as ‘a wide and varied career path’, he pursued his artistic desires and became a graphic designer. For the next 12 years he used his time in commercial art to develop his illustration skills and he learnt to work in various mediums.

and bone man for a few balloons and beach butties filled with sand evoke happy memories for Jackson. As a grown man he finds his subjects from the beaches of Somerset stating, ‘I love to people watch, witnessing holiday romancers, beach bums, screaming kids high on candy floss and day trippers trying to enjoy their day whilst over-laden with bucket and spades, carrier bags full of butties, flasks of tea and sand-sodden towels, queuing for the ‘charrabang’ to go home...deep joy’. Jackson draws hundreds of little sketches upon getting an idea in his head and develops his works from the best few. Often ideas will come to Jackson whilst he’s driving, but

“LS Lowry inspires Jackson”

“Fabulous artistic inpiration”

Years of honing his watercolours skills gave him the confidence to sell, and as a result, Jackson had quite a lot of success as a watercolour artist. Prompted by a friend and gallery owner in Somerset, Jackson ventured into acrylics. Jackson also credits his move to Somerset in 1999 as being ‘fabulous’ for his ‘artistic inspiration’. The colours and sounds of the countryside proved to be a haven for his busy mind. The influence of LS Lowry is apparent in Jackson’s pieces. Lowry was friends with his Grandfather and he notes that he was ‘greatly inspired by Lowry’. Jackson’s works have a high-spirited feel and he claims he loves to share the humour of life through his pieces. Childhood memories of selling his mum’s best coat to the rag

thinking up these quirky little images isn’t easy. ‘It really is hard work,’ states Jackson, but ‘I love my work passionately and never want to stop painting. I feel extremely blessed to have been given a skill such as this’.

Ruby Keller Peter Worswick is regarded as one of the most collectable artists in the UK. This award winning artist has exhibited throughout the UK, including London’s Kensington Palace. In 2010 Worswick decided to show some of his work under the name of Ruby Keller. With Image Design acting

“Peter Worswick as Ruby Keller” as the sole agent for all of the Ruby Keller paintings, they became an instant success. They are now so sought after, that Peter works hard to keep up with the increasing demand. TRESSES|REVIEW The Salon Owner and manager Grant opened Brownes 13 years ago, and now has four stylists and two trainees. The salon is a contemporary space filled with dark brown wooden flooring, mahogany shelves at the cutting stations, white and pink spot lights, a chandelier dropping with crystals, ornate mirrors, luxury wall paper and huge black and white photography on the walls. Each side of the salon is lined with cutting stations and mirrors, with the sinks at the back, with special massage chairs. Brownes offers a full range of cutting and colouring for men and women, from cuts and finishes to highlights, perms, full colours and semi-permanent colouring, as well as party, prom or wedding hair. The salon also specialises in Yuko permanent straightening and Racoon hair extensions. Grant’s philosophy is to be “hair orientated”, creating a result that is best for each individual head of hair as well as the client. The quality of work is very important to him, making sure every client receives the perfect style for them and goes home happy. The Style On entering the salon I was met by Grant, manager and my stylist. We decided to just trim the ends off – I’m trying to grow my hair. Grant explained that to increase the length I’d probably need to grow my shorter layers longer to give more bulk to the ends and keep it stronger. I had my hair washed with Paul Mitchell Shampoo One then The Detangler conditioner, to smooth, soften and prevent moisture loss, super rich to boost moisture. Then it was time for the cut. Grant snipped off a tiny bit from the top layers first, then worked around, making sure the bottom was straight.

After applying Neäl & Wolf Elevate Volumising Lotion to add body, he then dried my fringe with a comb, encouraging it to stay flat, and sectioned and blow dried my hair, using a round, metal brush to boost volume. After drying each section, Grant used a large Velcro roller to add further oomph, lifting the hair up from the roots. Once my entire head was covered in green rollers (a look I secretly liked), Grant removed the rollers and straightened the ends with the GHDs, curling inwards, to keep in the volume. To finish, he razored a bit on the top for a texture then spritzed on Paul Mitchell Spray Wax for bendable texture and Extra-Body Finishing Spray to fight frizz, add shine and secure. The Products Brownes uses a wide range of Paul Mitchell, Neäl and Wolf and L’anza products in the salon.

“ Contemporary space ” Paul Mitchell started off 30 years ago with Shampoo One, Shampoo Two and The Conditioner. Now they produce over 100 products. To create my style, Grant used the Shampoo One, which gently cleanses, adding deep shine to the hair, whilst being extremely mild so suitable for coloured hair. The shampoo contains wheatderived conditioners to improve the surface texture and manageability, and algae, aloe, jojoba, henna and rosemary to give deep shine. Grant used the Spray Wax on my hair to add definition and flexible texture.

“ Hair orientated ” It’s non oily and contains sunflower seed oil to give a satiny finish, whilst fine beeswax adds pliability. The Extra Body Finishing Spray keeps frizz at bay and adds hold to shiny hair, providing a boost of body making hair feel and look thicker. When used on my hair the spray dried instantly and kept my style in place with a light hold. The volumising lotion Grant used was Neäl and Wolf Elevate, designed to improve body and texture whilst enhancing shine and manageability, reducing static and adding shine. This is a must for my hair, as left to its own devices it has zero life!

ASTON HALL Don’t think you have to go far a field for a January weekend getaway. Built in 1772, Aston Hall is a luxury country house set in 55 acres of gardens and meadowland just outside of Sheffield. The History Host to a grand house for centuries, the Aston Hall site was originally home to the Archbishop of York, Sir William de Melton and his family between 1317 and 1340, before being passed on to the D’Arcy family in 1547. However in the 18th Century this house was destroyed in a blaze and the current Aston Hall was created for Lord Robert D’Arcy, the fourth Lord Holderness. Erected in 1772, the house was constantly added to until 1825. After marrying the daughter of the Earl of Holderness, Captain John Byron- father of poet Lord Byron- eloped to Paris with his lover.

The house then moved into the possession of the Dutch Verelsts, with Harry Verelsts becoming the Governor of Bengal. Transferring into the ownership of Sir Ronald Matthews in 1928, he then sold the house to East Riding Council thus ending Aston Hall’s legacy as a family home. The 1980’s saw Aston Hall become the country hotel it is today. The Rooms The hall has 52 luxury bedrooms, including 17 individually designed bedrooms in the Main House, 29 further bedrooms in the West Wing and 6 in Darcy House – a separate building in the grounds with self contained bedrooms and fully restored glass roof. All the bedrooms boast flat screen LCD TVs, mood lighting and Internet connection. The bathrooms have walk-in wet room showers, some with impressive free-standing baths and all are tiled in black granite. “Romantic french style” The sumptuous penthouse suite ‘Empire’ offers guests the modern luxury of contemporary and vintage furniture. The ornate black and tangerine velvet king-sized bed takes prominence in the room, with a separate sitting room and amazing views. The ‘Jazz’ suite is decked out in cool creams and browns. Contemporary and classic with a modern four-poster bed and Victorian bathtub. ‘Tang’ has entirely different décor, with blues and whites in a romantic French style, with a feature free-standing blue bathtub in the bedroom. The hall is licensed for civil weddings and partnership ceremonies, but the nearby 17th Century country church offers another option for a fairytale wedding. Providing everything for intimate ceremonies in the Vanquish room to lavish celebrations in the Lagonda room, the Hall now has a marquee in the gardens; fully heated, carpeted, with a bar, walkway to the house and private terrace. The hotel can provide professional and experienced wedding coordinators and the Bride and Groom can also enjoy complimentary treats, courtesy of Aston Hall. Aston Hall also offers several meeting rooms: Vanquish- the former library, Vantage, with period windows on three sides, Lagonda-the biggest suite, Marquee in the grounds and the Wellington and Dixon Bead in the West Wing, which each have a 42 inch flat screen TV, pull down screen, DVD player, surround sound music system, air conditioning and Wifi. SHEFFIELD SKI VILLAGE If the recent deluge of snow has ignited a desire to shun the car and snowboard to work, or if you naturally possess a proclivity towards daredevil moves but are done with aimlessly dragging your sledge around Sheffield in search of the next perilous incline, then you need head to only one place- Sheffield Ski Village. For as much as our seven hills have resembled the ski slopes of Val d’Isère of late, there is nothing like taking to the real pistes of Sheffield at South Yorkshire’s premier Ski resort. With artificial Alpine slopes stretching out for one-third of a mile and boasting the UK’s only half-pipe, the Village is one of Europe’s biggest artificial ski facilities. An array of slopes cater to both ‘Ski Virgins’ and those more skilled at suavely swooshing their way down the slopes. “UK’s only half pipe”

If you are a beginner then lessons are available on a group and one-on-one basis. With this in mind, should you find a blank space on the calendar then why not ‘Learn to ski in a weekend’? This £80 ski/ £12O snowboarding package includes four hours of tuition on both days. Medium to high physical fitness is advised but by Sunday evening it’s hoped you’ll be able to swish down the slopes with ease, turn, and stop in a controlled (rather than maniacal) manner. Weekdays the slopes are open until 10pm- for those of you who prefer the added thrill of doing your stimulating activities under the cloak of darkness. In addition to all things faux-snow, the Ski Village now boasts full sized Ten Pin Bowling lanes, built with Brunswick technology, offering a state of the art bowling experience. Oozing a 50’s charm with its American décor, the bowling alley is somewhat of a chameleon; a children’s paradise during the daylight hours, yet when darkness falls the neons flash, the tunes come thumping in and you can try Bowling in the Dark’. In contrast you can also enjoy a relaxing evening with a game, a glass of red and a bite to 42

LEGAL|RENTING PROPERTY

Would You Endanger Someone’s Health? It could result in you paying out thousands in legal fees. Not really worth the risk is it?

UK LAW ON RENTING PROPERTY Be In The Know About The Law On Renting Property. The Need To Know’s And All Those Things To Look Out For.

The private rented sector has undergone a massive change in the last few years. The growth in popularity of city centre apartments coupled with the ongoing effects of the banking crisis mean that there are now three million households renting privately, with predictions that one in five people will be living in the sector by 2020. “By 2020 1 in 5 people will be renting”

Many first time buyers are being blocked from entering the purchase market as they cannot get together the sizeable deposits currently required by most mortgage lenders. “First time buyers are being blocked”

A survey by the Council of Mortgage Lenders recently showed that the desire to become an owner-occupier is as strong as ever, but the means to finance it are more difficult than at any time in decades. Added to this many people are wary of falling house prices and concerned over the effect of government cuts on their own ability to meet long-term financial commitments. 44

Recent figures also show that rents are now increasing at their fastest rate in years as a result of the imbalance in supply and demand, with the Yorkshire and Humberside region suffering the biggest annual rise, up by 5.4%. This combination of factors means that power is currently shifting towards landlords. A lot of people are entering the rental market for “Cost to rent up by 5.4%”

the first time with no clear idea of what a landlord is obliged to provide in terms of minimum standards and ongoing maintenance. So if you are living in a rented property, what are “What are your rights?”

your rights? Here Solicitor Brian Wrigley of Norrie Waite & Slater Solicitors explains the obligations of landlords and tenants to carry out repairs in rented housing.

What are my landlord’s obligations towards repairs? Laws exist which oblige landlords to maintain properties in an adequate state of repair. The Landlord and Tenant Act of 1985 sets out the statutory duties of landlords, including: Keeping the structure of the building in good repair, including: guttering drains and external pipes the roof exterior walls windows and doors Keeping systems used for heating and hot water in good repair. Keeping systems used for the supply of essential services in working order. This means: electricity gas sanitation (including sinks, baths, toilets) water

LEGAL|RENTING PROPERTY My landlord won’t carry out repairs to the property, what can I do? Your landlord has an obligation to ensure the property is maintained in an adequate state of repair. “Force your landlordto comply”

If essential repairs are not carried out on the property it may be possible to take legal action to force your landlord to comply with their legal obligations. This may be in the form of a court order requiring your landlord to carry out the repairs. If the repairs have been delayed for no good reason then a solicitor may also be able to help you to claim compensation. What are the obligations of a tenant? Tenants also have obligations to their landlord and the property they reside in. These include: Paying the rent as agreed. Paying utility bills such as gas and electricity if this was agreed with the landlord.

Could You Raise A Child Here?

In most cases paying the council tax, water and sewerage charges. Keeping the property reasonably clean not damaging property and ensuring guests do not damage the property.

Depriving a chil of a safe envioronment to live , is to deprive a child of a future.

Using the heating properly. Carrying our minor maintenance, like checking smoke alarm batteries.

If you do cause damage to the property or supplied furnishings then the landlord may be able to charge you for the cost of repairs or withhold some or all of your deposit.

Can I get Legal Aid for Housing problems? Legal Aid (Public Funding) is available to help with housing problems and Norrie Waite and Slater solicitors are able to offer advice and representation on a legal aid basis. “Free Legal Aid”

If you are in receipt of Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance or Pension Credit you will qualify automatically for free legal aid. If you are in receipt of other benefits or are on a low income, legal aid may still be free and we will be able to assess if you qualify. If you are not entitled to legal aid we may still be able to help you. We will discuss with you suitable alternative funding arrangements. Brian Wrigley Norrie Waite & Slator Solicitor.

MOMENTUM|REVIEW Mercedes-Benz CL500 When Mercedes launches a brand new flagship design you know you can expect plenty of fireworks- and the fresh- faced CL promises not to let the side down.

“Ferocious bang” This new Mercedes boasts an array of clever features and advanced electronics, but does the new CL5O0 burst onto the scene with a ferocious bang? Or is it a fizzling disappointment? We took one for a spin in search of the answer.

Mercedes-Benz CL500 4/5S FHC (Fixed-head coupé) £87,780.00 Mercedes-Benz.co.uk Maximum power: 383 bhp(285.6 kW)

TOP SPEED:

250 km/h (155 mph)

MAXIMUM TORQUE: 530.0 Nm 0-60mph: 5.5 Seconds CO2 EMISSIONS: 288.0 g/km FUEL CONSUMPTION: 21.1mpg

“Amazing drive, sleek and beautiful inside and out” From the outside Mercedes’ designers have subtly enhanced the original bubble-canopied machine, creating an infinitely meaner looking supersized coupe. The CL on the whole is bigger than its predecessors but it still cuts an elegant design. Sweeping curves and a distinctive crease in the flanks –borrowed from the four-door CLS- are integral to the new look. Trademark styling cues such as the pillarless doors and the prominent grille have been retained, thus the CL appears every inch the sports car its powerful engine suggests.

“Flawless design” With swathes of leather interior and Black Ash wood trim dominating the high quality cabin, the first impression is that this is a flawless design. However, the over-sized instrument binnaclewhich uses a large colour screen to control all major functions- appears clumsy and the dials somewhat plain for a motor costing the best part of £80,000.

MOMENTUM|REVIEW

Press the starter button and the 5.5 litre V8 spins silently into life. At high motorway speeds the hushed unit is very impressive, with wind noise being the only distraction (albeit a minor one). With 580Nm of torque, performance is strong and the imperceptible changes of the slick 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox mean paying attention to the speed is a must- the CL is deceptively quick. Buttons on the back of the steering wheel allow manual control of the gearbox for those more sporty drivers but on the whole the steering on the CL feels

“Spins silently into life” lifeless and lacks feedback. Combined with a super-smooth ride (provided by the second-generation Active Body Control system) it makes for a detached driving experience. One can be forgiven for thinking you’re at the wheel of a computer game- and with so many hi-tech electronics on board that’s hardly a surprise.

“Fuel ecenomic” As if that wasn’t enough, anyone purchasing the new CL can opt for Advance Parking Guidance. This feature measures the length of available space to ensure the car fits and then directs the driver into it. The CL now features BlueEfficiency as standard, which offers a vast improvement on fuel economy- despite top speeds of 155mph.

“Impressive tourer” Overall, the new CL is an impressive luxury tourer offering a truly refined driving experience. However, the vague controls distance you so far from the action that you can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed.

Not only is there ABS and ESP stability control but Distronic Plus is available as an extra option. This latest evolution of the brand’s radar-based cruise control also manages Brake Assist Plus and the new Pre-Safe Brake System. The former warns the driver of an impending collision and helps to apply the required stopping power, while the latter triggers the brakes automatically when an accident is unavoidable, to reduce the impact.
