Summer in Sheffield this year is set to be one for the senses.

It’s all about edibles at the start of July as the Sheffield Food Festival makes a welcome return. Your olfactory senses are in for a treat as the scents of a diverse array of cuisines are set to emanate across the city. Your wallets won’t feel the pinch- even if your waist does- as Sheffield’s best eateries conjure some very tempting offers both for the bank balance and the taste buds. July comes to a close with Tramlines Festival, Sheffield’s biggest, free celebration of music. We caught up with Sheffield’s own Shake Aletti ahead of their much anticipated gig at The Harley to find out why they think our Steel City is a hotbed of creativity. Along with maniacal cab drivers, more free music courtesy of Fyfe Dangerfield and his flock and the epitome of 80s pop rebellion Cyndi Lauper, we have regular features from motor writer Tim Barnes Clay, Norrie, Waite and Slater Solicitors and in-house beauty expert Kate.

SPOILS|LOCAL BUSINESSES Browns Bar & Brasserie www.browns-restaurants.co.uk

In the heart of the theatre district and overlooking the tranquil Peace Gardens; what better location for a classy cocktail and piano bar? In April, Browns Bar & Brasserie opened its doors and for those mourning the loss of Sheffield’s beloved HaHa, there should be no tears shed. If anything, Browns is very much an improvement on its predecessor. Chandeliers, mahogany woods and deep, red leathers give the newly refurbished locale a contemporary, yet rich and inviting atmosphere. The location has always attracted a healthy number of punters with many spilling out onto the cobbles over the summer months; a hotspot watering hole for after work drinks.

“ extensive menu ” Browns, as you would expect, has a luxurious and extensive menu of beers, wines, champagnes, spirits, cocktails and mocktails (for those of you who don’t want to get too rowdy at the opera). They even cater for those watching their waist with a range of ‘Skinny’ cocktails. Boasting all the flavour of a regular mojito, Browns’ touch of agave syrup ensures your taste buds are oblivious, yet if you’re calorie counting, you can afford to sample another. The menu at Browns is rather impressive

and with so much variety, it’s difficult to not find anything on there to salivate over. You can breakfast and brunch here, enjoy a Sunday roast or indulge in puddings and afternoon tea. The menu is classic meets contemporary, with such dishes as watermelon, feta and hazelnut salad and lobster and crab croquettes gracing the menu. Browns Bar & Brasserie is a real addition to the Sheffield bar and restaurant scene. With live piano music on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and weekend afternoons, it boasts a relaxing ambience as well as exquisite edibles and drinks.

Pete McKee www.therealmckee.co.uk

Sheffield’s very own artist Pete McKee is back and he needs you! Or rather your old, dusty holiday snaps. Pete’s newest project ‘Wish I Were Here’ is an exhibition made by you, the public. Held at McKee’s very own gallery ‘A Month of Sundays’, this celebration of the great British holiday is bound to leave you feeling slightly nostalgic. Based on old memories and holiday recollections, this is one display that will have you yearning for the seaside and a chip butty. Think caravans, candy floss and slot machines; we’ve all enjoyed a good British holiday, where for one week in the summer all is well… and usually wet (that’s a British summer for you!).

“ nostalgic ” Pete himself has volunteered some of his own personal snaps and wants the good folk of Sheffield to get involved! Whether your memory is a one of joy or gloom, if it means something to you then tell your story. Get those photo albums out and have a good old rummage – there is nothing more enjoyable than unearthing a collection of forgotten memories (even if some do happen to be a tad cringeworthy). The exhibition runs from July 2nd - 31st

Cyndi lauper Cyndi Lauper - Sheffield City Hall - Friday June 24th

For most, if you mention the name Cyndi Lauper, an image of the quirky, flame haired, 80’s pop rebel dancing through the streets of New York to ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ springs to mind. She was the quintessential eccentric pop star with gusto, but now, twenty five years later, Lauper has a touch of the blues. But fear not, for the colourful chanteuse is only transcending the genres as she embarks on an eighty show tour in support of her eleventh studio album ‘Memphis Blues’ which was released last spring. Though she may not have seen chart success in the UK for some time, Lauper has maintained a loyal following thanks to previous hits such as ‘Time After Time’ and ‘True Colours’. In addition she 8

has no doubt gained a few Little Monsters, thanks to her collaboration with Mac and Lady Gaga as the face of their Spring 2010 Aids Awareness Campaign. Continually reinventing her style, collaborating with renowned artists and remaining an active figure in the fight for gay rights, this 57 year old has proved to be more than a one-hit wonder of the 80s.

Known for her intimate performances, don’t miss a night of blues, ballads and she bops with the offbeat New Yorker as she takes to the City Hall stage on June 24th.

Taxi Driver (18)

The Showroom - June 24th-30th various times

Thanks to The Showroom, Martin Scorsese’s award winning 1976 American drama-thriller Taxi Driver, is back on the big screen this June. Frequently named amongst the best films of all time, it tells the story of Travis Bickle, an ex-Marine and Vietnam War veteran living in New York City. Suffering from insomnia, Bickle spends his nights as a cab driver and his days watching porn in seedy downtown theatres. A loner with strong opinions, manically obsessed with the rapidly deteriorating cesspool that is New York City, Bickle takes it upon himself to do whatever it takes to make the world a better place. The film features some outstanding performances, notably a young Jodie Foster as 12 year old prostitute Iris ‘Easy’ Steensma, for whom Bickle wants to be a savior and Robert De Niro, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of the volatile protagonist, Bickle.

Dylan Moran Sheffield City Hall - Friday July 1st & Saturday July 2nd

Last month we interviewed Dylan Moran ahead of his two-date stint at the City Hall this July. Preparing for the shows with a now, not so secret routine involving ‘’T’ai Chi, Astral Projection and Marine drills’’, Moran has promised that hidden amongst the topics of ageing, religion, kids, relationships and the general absurdities of life would be ‘’tremendous violence, impressions of victorian chemists. breasts and taramasolata’’. If you have an appetite for such an agenda then be sure to see this sardonic comedian as he battles the smoking ban whilst gulping ‘’warm pints of walrus blubber mixed with a nice handful of jute’’ on the Steel City stage. Citing his favourite book as the ‘AA Guide to Caravanning In andAround Rotherham’’, be sure to look out for the unkempt comic and his chemical toilet.

Guillemots The Leadmill - Thursday July 21st

If you flick over a few pages, you’ll see Sheffield’s biggest free music festival Tramlines is set to return this July. The three day event officially commences on Friday July 22nd and sees a host of musicians and genres descend on the city. However, the celebration of free music really kicks off on Thursday July 21st as the Guillemots take to the Leadmill stage for a 100%, no strings attached, free show. Fyfe Dangerfield, MC Lord Magrão, Aristazabal Hawkes and Greig Stewart, who formed back in 2004, are back with their new album ‘Walk The River’.Guillemots are a regular on the festival lineup and gained great praise for their stints as support acts to the likes of Rufus Wainwright and KT Tunstall. Known for their ‘’secret’’ gigs that sell out in minutes, keep up to date with how to secure your place by visiting the Leadmill website. www.leadmill.co.uk FLAUNT | REVIEW

Stubble Trouble? ///////////////////////////////// Millions of men all over the world suffer from tough stubble – a vicious foe which defies the attention of every shaving cream or foam known to man, blunting the edge of even the keenest razor. WANDERLUST|MEXICO

MEXICO T

he tenth most visited country in the world, with twenty-six declared world heritage sites, charming colonial towns and dozens of thrilling cities, there’s plenty to explore in this country of 111 million. Outside the cities, stunning Pacific beaches, stark deserts, mangrove swamps and secluded swimming holes provide all you need for a relaxing, romantic or adventurous escape. Captivating, cosmopolitan and chaotic, Mexico City and the 32 states offer an incredible abundance of experiences, from laid-back and leisurely to upbeat to adrenaline-charging.

“ Aztec temples ” History and culture dominate Mexico’s capital city, where you’ll find the ruins of Aztec temples, the murals of Diego Rivera and the paintings of Frida Kahlo. Connecting the 21st century to the city’s vibrant past, local dancers and drummers perform at the Zócalo, a public plaza surrounded by famous landmarks such as the Metropolitan Cathedral and Palacio Nacional. Mexico is the ideal locale for those who cherish culture, art and the world’s natural beauty. Forgetting your camera would be unforgivable. While you might be thinking this tropical paradise could be just the adventure holiday you’ve been looking for, it doesn’t come cheap, a return ticket from

London can set you back £700. What you’ll experience upon arriving though is, as they say, priceless. Although many people associate Mexico with hot weather, it’s a big country with a diverse range of climatic zones. The weather at sea-level tends to be warm to hot throughout the year, making for yearround beach weather. Whereas at higher elevations the weather can get chilly to unbearably cold in the winter months, especially from November through to January. Mexico’s beach resorts are most pleasant between October and May-June to September generally being the hottest yet most humid months- and you should keep in mind that hurricane season lasts from June to November. Thus, if you’re in search of a sizzling tan and seas to snorkel, winter would be the best time to visit this country. Whilst the tourism in Mexico is a multimillion dollar industry, it’s the charm and warmth of the smaller communities that will have you yearning to return. If you’ve never travelled outside of the developed world before, you should prepare yourself for poverty, heat, noise and crowds. Mexico City is notorious for its violence and gang related crimes, so as with most of the world’s major cities, keeping your wits about you (especially at night) is advised.

Cancun is probably the most popular tourist destination in Mexico thanks to its prior inhabitants, the Mayans, and the gifts they left for us to explore. Close to Cancun is the site of the Chichen Itza which translated means “At the mouth of the well of the Itza”. The Chichen Itza was a popular site for settlement as it was built near two natural sink holes called ‘cenotes’ which would have provided a plentiful source of water for settlers there. The most famous cenote, the “Cenote Sagrado”, also know as the Well of Sacrifice is where pre-Columbian Mayans would sacrifice, humans into the cenote as a form of worship to their God of rain, Chaac. The Mayan-built wonders are often situated amongst vast, grassy areas with little to no shade, so don’t forget to take some hydration if you plan a visit there. Mexico is also home to one of the most popular shrines in the world, Our Lady of Guadalupe. A celebrated religious icon, it is a real treat to explore the vast cathedral in Mexico City. Mexico is a colourful country of stunningly unique architecture and art. There’s no better place to discover this than at the Frida Kahlo Museum also known as the Blue House (La Casa Azul) for the structure’s cobalt-blue walls. A historic house museum dedicated to the life and work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, it is located in the Colonia del Carmen neighbourhood of Coyoacán in Mexico City and is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist attractions.

19

WANDERLUST|MEXICO The building was the birthplace of famed painter Kahlo and is also the home where she grew up, lived –with renowned muralist husband Diego Rivera -and eventually died. In 1958 (four years after her death) Diego Rivera donated the home and its contents in order to turn it into a museum in Frida’s honour. Along with warmer climes and stunning sights, an experience of different tastes is what inspires many of us to travel the globe. Mexican dishes are bursting with flavour and vary greatly from the ‘Mexican’ dishes you may have sampled on West Street and the like. As well as the native chillis, its wise to be aware that maladies in Mexico can be caused by un-purified water used in ice or used to wash salads and fruit so be sure to stock up on bottled water and avoid the above if you have a weak stomach.

“ Tequila ” The red volcanic soils surrounding the state of Jalisco are home to the blue agave, from which tequila is made. Named after the city Tequila, Mexican laws state that tequila can only be made in Jalisco and a few other, limited regions. You may be known for being able to knock a few back in Cubana, but be aware that in Mexico, tequila can have an alcohol content of up to 55%. Whilst it’s all well to try the local juice, don’t ruin your holiday with excess. Covering two million square metres, Mexico is vast. From its culture, to its diversity in cuisine, to its landscapes and the exotic creatures that inhabit it. Whilst it is the ideal locale for a couple of weeks on the beach, to not soak up some culture and wondrous natural and man-made sights along with the sun would be something unforgivable.

LEGAL|BUYING A PROPERTY

. Choose the perfect home . Not just the cheapest It’s cheaper for a reason

The Dangers of Cutting Corners When Buying a Property The true value of seeking specialist advice when buying a property has been highlighted with a recent report in the press of the valuation of a property at £1 by the Nationwide. The property had previously been bought for £86,000 and having had £10,000 spent on renovation it is now being rented out to tenants at £550 per month. So how can it only be worth £1?

“ damp and rot ” The property is certainly no wreck, but according to a property survey carried out for the Nationwide, there are problems of damp and rot and some issues with the roof. These are all common problems with older properties which can be easily rectified. So why the valuation of £1? It seems that this price tag is a standard valuation applied by some mortgage lenders when a property is outside their criteria to secure mortgage lending on. This should act as a timely reminder to homebuyers to take professional advice and not cut corners when buying a property, lest they be left stuck with a white elephant further down the road. Nick Elliott, solicitor at Norrie Waite & Slater, offers tips on how to avoid unsuspectingly encountering problems when buying a property. 22

LEGAL|BUYING A PROPERTY

• Get the most detailed property survey you can afford, particularly on older properties. Surveys carried out by mortgage lenders are usually superficial and are aimed at protecting the lenders’ investment only, not your interests. This type of survey will only usually show up the most obvious problems with the property. A more thorough survey will provide you with more detailed information about the property you want to buy, and it may highlight any problems with the property that you should be aware of. If problems with the property are uncovered this can often work to your advantage as a buyer as you can use this information to either pull out of the purchase, renegotiate the price or insist that the sellers deal with the problems before the transaction is completed. • Ensure that the price you are quoted by your solicitor for conveyancing includes all the necessary property searches. The searches carried out by a solicitor are aimed at ensuring that you know everything you need to about the property you are buying. As well as confirming things such as the sellers’ legal right to sell the property, they can also uncover things such as local planning applications, possible environmental issues arising from land usage in the immediate vicinity and whether the property may be susceptible to subsidence due to mining in the area. Some law firms may not include all the required searches in order to make their

quote seem more attractive. This can seem appealing upfront, when you are trying to stretch your budget, but it can prove to be false economy if important information is not uncovered.

“ stretch your budget ” Temporary savings to be made of up to £2500, Buyers should also enquire as to whether they qualify for any of the available Stamp Duty Exemptions- and ensure that the solicitor acting on their behalf explores any possible exemptions.

LEGAL|BUYING A PROPERTY Normally, when you buy any property valued between £125,000 and £250,000, you have to pay a Tax to the Governmewhich is 1% of the value of the property. This is called Stamp Duty Land Tax. At present a First Time Buyer can qualify for Stamp Duty Land Tax relief, designed to try and encourage first time buyers back into the housing market and offering a saving of up to £2500, providing the following criteria are met: • The purchase price must not be more than £250,000 • The Buyer (or all buyers if a joint purchase) must not have previously owned an interest in the property anywhere in the world • Completion date must take place before 25 March 2012 • The property being purchased must be their main home A buyer should ensure that their solicitor includes any charges for obtaining this exemption in the quotation provided and does not levy a separate invoice for such work. For further advice, or an all inclusive conveyancing quote, contact Nick on 0114 2766166 www.solicitorssheffield.net

Diverse sounds emanating from over fifty venues across the city is what you can expect to hear if you take a saunter down to this year’s Tramlines Festival. Arriving on July 22nd with a continuously expanding line-up of established acts and must-see bands, the free festival promises to be a summer highlight. Originating in 2009, the first Tramlines festival brought 35,000 people to Sheffield’s city centre. Arranged in just five months, the organisers gave us local music in a festival setting and brought the city alight. 2010 saw the festival more than double in size, with 65,000 people attending the Saturday alone. Now in its third year, Tramlines is back and is set to be more extravagant than ever. Hop on the vintage bus which will take you across the Tramlines circuit to see the likes of Ash, The Futureheads, Los Campesinos!, Islet, Dry The River, Rolo Tomassi, Toddla T, The Duke Spirit, Dels and many, many, many more. One act causing a notable buzz are Sheffield’s own Shake Aletti. We caught up with the band ahead of their appearance at the Harley on July 3rd.

For those who haven’t yet heard your material, how would you describe the sound of Shake Aletti? Wow! I never really know how to answer this question, I don’t think we really fit into any ready made box. What we do is always evolving, but our influence is based mainly in mid 80s Disco and Funk, and some more modern forms of dance music. I think we have quite an authentic sound, but its not really intentional, it’s because we use a load of old kit that’s about 25 years old! Was there a defining moment in your life when you knew music was the way you wanted to go? When I realised I wasn’t very good at anything else! Apart from cooking. But no, in honesty, it’s just been a very natural progression for us, no defining moments to note! Why the name Shake Aletti? Its taken from ‘Vince Aletti’ who was (and still is) a big influence

of music really, Detroit or Berlin for example have always produced great artists, and even entire genres. How would you describe the current Sheffield music scene and is there anyone else breaking the mould that we should listen out for? It’s healthy as ever right now. There’s so much, in all the genres. I wouldn’t know where to start.... Mable Love and Dead Sons are doing great stuff at the moment, Wet Nuns and Hey Sholay are great to watch live too. There’s young Checan and Square Head who are both wicked producers, you should check them out! Too many to mention!

on the Disco scene in NY as it first began to emerge. He actually coined the term ‘Disco’. Shake however is just, well.... ‘Shake’! You’re playing at The Harley this July for Tramlines, how important is it for you to return to home soil? Yeah its very important! I think any band would tell you its nice to play on home ground, it’s where you started out! Tramlines though, and The Harley both played a massive role in us coming up through Sheffield, which in turn is how you break out, so it’s kind of extra special for us this year. Its gonna be an amazing show that one, a few surprises. We can’t wait! Sheffield is of course home to some of the UK’s most successful artists, what do you think it is about our Steel City that inspires so much creativity? I’d like to come up with a new reason, but it really is down to the industrial nature of the city. Industrial cities have always been at the front

31

You’re known for your collaborations, who currently would you most like to work with? I love collaborating, its a big thing for us. We’ve worked on the next single from Toddla T ‘Watch Me Dance’ which is out in July and also features Roots Manuva. Its nice to be on this album as well as the last! Also we’re doing a track for the ‘2 Bears’ album (Raff, and Joe Goddard from Hot Chip) which is going to be a lot of fun, and a track for Darkstarr which is a new project from the legendary Ashley Beedle and Cosmo. A dream collab for us would be like Cameo or something…or Justin Bieber. After the success of your debut single ‘Dancefloor’ you’re about to release the next single ‘Inside Out’, How important are chart positions to you? Yes ‘Inside Out’ will be released in June and we’re really happy with it. The whole package from remixes to video and artwork is something we’re very proud of. Charts are clearly important in terms of sales, but its quite difficult to chart unless you’re Adele or… Justin Bieber.

You must have some guilty music pleasures? Nah not really. Having said that I think a lot of people would class some of the music I love as guilty pleasures I reckon. Radio One DJs Annie Mac, Judge Jules, Huw Stephens and Nick Grimshaw are among your fans, have you discovered any unlikely Shake Aletti groupies? Well, Vince Aletti (who I mentioned earlier) got in touch saying he was a fan and we are named after him! We even got the chance to meet him when he invited us to an exhibition he was curating in London. Deep. How do you find touring? Is there a country you’d especially like to break? America has to be the one! You can chart at like 1000 over there and be getting PAID! Over here to make any money every single person in the country would have to buy your record. Twice. Touring is odd though. When you’re on the road you just want to get home, but as soon as you are you miss being on the road. You get used to it though, and it is a whole lot of fun.

The last few months have been an amazing journey for you guys; how do you plan to spend the summer? And what can fans expect to see next from Shake Aletti? Yeah, it’s been great. This summer we’re doing a few festivals, Isle Of Wight and V are gonna be fun, Tramlines of course will be a highlight, then we have lots of club shows around the country. After the summer we’ll continue to work on the album and there’ll be another single before that is released. Sheffielders should keep an eye out for our “Pyjama Parties’ too. We gonna start them after the summer, and they’re basically about bringing some of the people we’ve had the pleasure of meeting or working with to Sheffield to play and have a rave! The idea is big names, big parties, big fun! Catch Shake Aletti at The Harley on July 23rd as part of this year’s Sheffield Tramlines Festival.

Originality in your sound and stage presence is obvious, there must be a lot of pressure to remain unique? What inspires your own creativity? I think it’s just something that has to come naturally to be honest. If you think too hard about it, you’ll end up

wearing suits made of meat. Or making films called Believe.

CUISINE|RECIPES Mushroom and Spinach Risotto

The fresh, bright green leaves of spinach make it one of the more appealing vegetables. Those vibrant leaves are packed with a high concentration of vitamins and minerals, making spinach one of the most nutritious edibles. Not quite the panacea portrayed on Popeye, spinach is however, a sure-fire way to infuse some hearty sustenance into your diet.

To Cook: Prepared in 50 minutes, Serves 2. Suitable for vegetarians. In a large deep frying pan heat the oil and butter. Add an onion and cook gently for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the mushrooms and garlic and continue to cook gently for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the rice and coat with the onion and mushroom mixture. Pour in the wine and cook over a moderate heat for around 3 minutes, stirring from time to time until the wine is absorbed. Reduce to a gentle heat. Add the tomatoes and 125ml of the vegetable stock and cook for about 5 minutes until the liquid is absorbed. Add a further 125ml of stock and continue cooking until absorbed. Repeat with the remaining stock until liquid is absorbed and the rice is creamy and tender. Stir in the parsley and half the Parmesan. Season to taste. Scatter the spinach over the risotto, cover and cook gently for 4-5 minutes until the spinach has wilted.

CUISINE|REVIEW The Mediterranean Restaurant 271 Sharrowvale Road

The Mediterranean Restaurant lies on Sharrowvale Road; a little taste of the sun soaked Med right here in Sheffield. From the azure blue and white exterior to the Balearic-esque wooden chairs, uneven wooden flooring and whitewashed walls, the restaurant oozes something special, filling me with that holiday feeling. Pictures on the walls depict a flavour of what was to come - being the only independent fish restaurant in the city, The Mediterranean Restaurant is something of a little-known treat, having been open for an impressive 25 years. ing to resist – on recommendation from our waiter I chose the halibut, baked and served on creamed leeks with lemon beurre blanc sauce. Cooked to perfection, the fish was delicate and tender, the sauce light with a hint of cream. My partner opted for the roasted sea bass, served with pancetta, shallots and mushrooms – served whole the fish flaked off the bone, light and moist. Both dishes were accompanied with roasted new potatoes, carrots and green beans and sprinkled with caviar – a treat you won’t find on many plates!

aroma I knew the torte wasn’t going to disappoint; rich and dense. My partner’s poached pears, sliced into petal-like shapes, were soaked in a deep purple, syrupy sauce, bursting with sweet, juicy flavour.

For dessert I lapped up the chocolate torte, luxuriously presented with a vanillary sauce, caramelised sugar lattice, cherries, blackberries and a physalis, drizzled in chocolate sauce. With a sultry chocolate

We were greeted with olives and freshly cooked bread, filled with sweet herbs and sprinkled with sesame seeds to whet our appetites. First up: Zazuella – a Spanish fish stew, packed with mussels, prawns, king prawn and chunks of fish in a tomato and white wine sauce, garnished with seaweed. Beautifully presented, the seafood was flawlessly complemented by the sauce with a hint of spice; the whole prawns offering something of an authentic thrill. Although being the first restaurant to bring tapas to Sheffield, the fish dishes on the mains menu sounded too mouthwater-

TRESSES|REVIEW L Beautique www.l-beautique.co.uk

On my quest to find and review the best salons in Sheffield, my journey took me to the recently opened L.Beautique in Hillsborough. Having only opened at the end of May, L.Beautique is the baby of stylist Jenna and beauty therapist Lauren. Offering both hair and beauty services, clients are treated to having everything under one roof – and why not save time by getting your nails or brows done whilst waiting for your colour to take? Welcoming new and existing clients, Jenna comes from a local salon and the duo are soon to add new stylist Alice to the team.

“ everything under one roof ” Offering a wide range of hairdressing services - cuts from just £15.95, blow-dries, restyles, full colours and highlights, with services for men and special child and teen prices, L.Beautique specialises in wedding and prom hair, creating spectacular updos to make their client the belle of the ball. Added to beauty treatments including waxing, lash and brow tinting, facials, make up (with a speciality in bridal and evening application), massage, ear piercing, St Tropez tanning, nail extensions, art and Gelac, manicures and pedicures, you’ve got no excuse not to be looking like a million dollars. Eager to be glammed up with a posh do, I gave Jenna free range to blow-dry my hair into perfection; but first came the wash. Jenna scrubbed in a squirt of Clynol Repair shampoo to rescue my damaged, brittle hair and get it sparkling from the roots, before smoothing through a dollop of the Repair conditioner, to support the cuticles, fibres and basic structure of the hair, sealing in moisture, elasticity and shine. Once towel dried, Jenna whisked through some Tigi Bed Head Small Talk – a thickening lotion to give body and volume, boost life into my limp locks, separate and control, as well as protecting from heat. Whipping out a hairdryer and round brush, Jenna blow-dried my hair, injecting volume by brushing upwards from the roots, then skilfully twisting the brush to give a soft curl. Next came the GHDs – Jenna curled them through my hair to smooth off any frizz. For a superstar updo, Jenna pinned up the curls from the sides, and backcombed the crown, creating a glamorous wave at the back with big volume on top; the grips expertly hidden away. After a spritz of Clynol Free Flow Hairspray to hold the style in place and Look Lustrous shine spray, the look was complete: a glam-rock, shiny style with understated waves. 38

With summer becoming much more of a reality, it’s time to freshen up and get into the sunshine vibe. With the wedding season upon us, I’ve taken a look at wedding make up and spritzed on a bit of perfume to help you find a perfect new scent. As usual, I’ve hit the streets of Sheffield to see what the latest is on the beauty scene; this time I popped into Pampered on Abbeydale Road for a relaxing Tsuboki facial.

Wedding Bliss

The wedding season is upon us and no one wants to see a bridezilla stumbling down the aisle; wedding makeup makes or breaks a bride’s appearance. There’s always the conundrum of whether to go for a makeup artist or just DIY; prewedding, trial any artist before you decide to let them loose on your wedding day but you may feel more comfortable to stick with your own style and the products you’re used to.

“ fresh face and subtle tones ” Although you’ll be dressing up for your big day, a heavily made up face will not be complimentary! Think fresh face and subtle tones; focus on a good base of foundation and powder with a sprinkling of bronzer to

keep your skin matte and sunkissed, then dust a flush of rose or peach blusher onto your cheekbones. Dark eyes are a no-no – stick to a pale colour to compliment your eye colour (beige, light brown, peach, pink), with a hint of darker shading in the outer corner. Add a slick of eyeliner to define the eye, and compliment with a flutter of lash – fake lashes are excellent to add length and volume as long as you choose a more subtle style. Drop the bright red lips and go for a pale pink or nude shade.

Remember these photos are going to be with you forever, so make sure you’re a beautifully blushing bride!

Your face needs to stay in place for probably a whole afternoon and through the evening into the early hours, so keep a stash of top-up products in your clutch or with your bridesmaid.

Perfume The signature scent: a sultry, unique aroma to remind everyone of you. Find yourself clinging on to that perfume you’ve been spritzing on for the past five years? Now is the time to refresh your fragrance and reinvent your olfactory aura. Don’t become attached to one singular scent however – there’s nothing wrong with having two or three regular

“ a sultry, unique aroma ” perfumes to suit the occasion and keep things interesting. The nose becomes used to a regular smell so keep it keen with a variety of scents. A fresh, floral whiff is perfect for summery days. Try Chloe by Chloe, with notes of rose, lychee and honey, Gucci by Gucci, with pear, guava, honey, patchouli and musk with or Paul Smith Floral, a burst of flora with magnolia, orchid, orange, grapefruit, ginger, musk and amber. 40

Pampered www.pampered-studio.co.uk

Pampered has been a part of the Sheffield therapy and well being scene for three years, offering a mixture of holistic and complimentary therapies, and soon to add new beauty treatments to the list like waxing, manicures and pedicures to meet demand. Pampered provides a huge range of therapies that can be hard to find in Sheffield: reflexology, Indian head massage, yoga, Tsuboki facial massage,

“ Tsuboki facial ” No Hands, holistic therapeutic, pregnancy and hot stones massages, Reiki, acupuncture, Hopi ear candles, Power Plate fitness programme and VacuStep inch loss and cellulite reduction. I was warmly met by manager Sue and Vanessa, massage therapist at Pampered. Vanessa is trained in a variety of holistic therapies, having been massaging for 14 years. Her skills include the No Hands massage; a dynamic new form of touch therapy which can be focused on the whole body, colon or as a structural treatment to straighten and realign the spine, as well as hot stone massage, holistic therapeutic massage and pregnancy massage. The most recent addition to Vanessa’s healing repertoire is Tsuboki – a Japanese face massage based, in part, on the principles of acupuncture. I was to be treated to a taster of the benefits of Tsuboki with a 45 minute treatment.

The meridian theory is based on the idea that various energy lines run through the body, with eight going through the face. By massaging and stimulating these facial lines, the use of the meridians can stimulate all organs in the body and benefit the entire health also working with the lymphatic system to encourage the removal of metabolic waste products. Working on the surface improves skin tone and lymph flow, then working on a deeper level with the musculature affects muscle tone and general appearance. Tsuboki is also a natural face lift, helping to prevent lines, wrinkles and puffiness – and is luckily a knife-free procedure! After I settled down on the table beneath a towel, Vanessa started the treatment by gently wiping off my makeup, then began with a dry massage to the shoulders, before massaging the base of my head, moving my head from side to side. Moving on to the face, Vanessa used jojoba oil – very similar to the skin’s natural oils, jojoba provides all day moisturisation and

can balance the skin’s oil production. She started to massage my face using gentle, soothing movements with her fingertips, working on pressure points and occasionally tapping her fingers on my face. Incredibly relaxing, with soothing music in the background, I was very close to nodding off! To finish the treatment, Vanessa massaged my shoulders then worked down my legs, just pressing down until she reached my feet. After a brief foot massage, she gently pulled my legs and swung them from side to side. The final result? I left Pampered feeling totally relaxed and in a very good mood; the stresses and strains of a hard day’s beauty reviewing had been soothed away!

A permanent and popular collection at the Gallery is that by Victorian writer, John Ruskin. For over forty years, Ruskin travelled widely across Britain and Europe in search of natural beauty to observe, draw and write about. Upon his return to England, Ruskin noted that as England’s manufacturing cities expanded and

“ John Ruskin ” became wealthier, the workforce continued to live in poverty and grime, with very little to inspire them. Thus Ruskin created the Guild of St George and founded a museum in Walkley, specifically for Sheffield’s workers. Filled with an eclectic collection of manuscripts, minerals, watercolours and drawings, which reveal the connections between nature and art, it is a collection conjured to inspire and open our eyes to the beauty in the everyday world. Upcoming exhibitions at the Gallery include a collection of works by Sheffield’s foremost urban artist Kid Acne. ‘Kill Your Darlings’ is Kid Acne’s first solo exhibition in his hometown and celebrates his work

The new state-of-the-art Sheffield South showroom at Archer Road, which opened at the end of last year, is fast gaining a reputation for having the friendliest staff in the area, all of whom specialise in different areas and are dedicated to the highest level of customer care. Fronting the team is general sales manager Ryan Smith, who started in the motor industry in 2005 as a sales representative. Beginning his career at the Saville Street site, when it was Dixons Ford, Ryan stayed on when Lookers took over and helped the business achieve the prestigious title of Dealership of the Year. Ryan, of Pontefract, praises the new site in Sheffield 8 for its friendly atmosphere and the fact local residents no longer have to travel across the city to benefit from the the services and quality of care offered at Saville Street. One of his goals is to see the local operation land its own Dealership of the Year award.

Business manager Adam Devoy is in charge of the finance side of things, ensuring that customers get one-on-one attention and all the help they require to find the right finance package for their situation. Overseeing the accounts, Adam can help car buyers with their finances, often even those with not-sogood credit ratings. “Even if people haven’t got amazing credit scores, we can help them with it and find the right deal for them. You don’t have to have the best credit rating in the world,” explained Adam, of Pontefract. With six years experience in the motor industry, Adam previously worked at Lookers Saville Street site for almost three years.

MOMENTUM|REVIEW Renault Laguna Sport Tourer GT www.renault.co.uk

According to a recent study, the average male driver travels an extra 276 miles every year as a result of being lost. Women will only persevere for 256 miles. The research by Sheila’s Wheels car insurance found that 12 percent of men refuse to ask a stranger for help at all, yet 74 percent of women have no hang-ups about asking for directions. This lost driver time could be costing as much as £2,000 in fuel in a lifetime. All this getting lost malarkey could be avoided if you buy a car with sat-nav built in. Or, of course, you could just buy a cheap one and stick it to the windscreen, like most people do. However, if you do want a fuss-free sat-nav, and you’re after a decent sized family estate, then why not take a look at the Renault Laguna Sport Tourer TomTom 2.0 dci 150?

“ mile-muncher ” I had the flagship GT Line TomTom model on test recently, and I was pretty impressed with it. Renault’s provision of an integrated Carminat TomTom® satellite navigation system remains a core feature of the Laguna’s specification, made even more user friendly for the 2011 range with the addition of live traffic data analysis to help avoid hold-ups on programmed itineraries. But what is the refreshed Laguna like? Well, the French car maker’s mile-muncher displays assertive new front-end styling that immediately distinguishes it from its predecessor. Under the skin, important changes have been made too, with revisions to the range of powertrains that deliver lower emissions and better fuel economy, without compromising on performance. The 2011 version of the Laguna is offered in a simplified range structure with three comprehensively specified trim levels: Expression, Dynamique TomTom and, at the top-of-the-

range, the GT Line TomTom. The choice of engines includes 150, 175 and 180hp versions of the 2.0 dCi unit and a 2.0 16V 140 petrol engine.

top-of-the-range feel, the positioning of all the controls having been re-thought to deliver the best ergonomic solution for visibility and ease of use.

“ 18 inch alloys ”

The seat design allows for good passenger comfort (so my wife tells me) with a high level of lateral support. It is also easy to find the ideal driving position, with a wide range of height adjustment and independent seat back angle adjustment. Rear seat passengers benefit from large headrests and more generous knee room, thanks to a slimmer front seatback design.

But is it attractive? Yes, much more so than before. In fact, the Laguna Sport Tourer is, undeniably, a good looking estate car. The steeply raked rear screen is pleasing to the eye and, in GT Line TomTom trim, the profile is almost sexy. Other exterior styling features include a sports grille, air intakes and pearl black mirror housings. Twin chrome tailpipes complete the picture, alongside 18 inch alloys, which have a dark, very appealing, Shadow Chrome finish. Inside, it’s all very plush and well screwed together. Cabin detail touches include combination leather and alcantara upholstery, aluminium pedals, electrically adjustable heated front seats and a 10-speaker BOSE premium audio system. The dashboard design in particular accentuates the Laguna 2011’s

The load area in the Sport Tourer uses Renault’s ‘Super-fold’ system for quick and easy folding of the rear seats. A pull of a lever located on either side of tailgate aperture is all that is needed for the seats to fold automatically, leaving a perfectly flat load floor over two metres in length. For added convenience, four control levers are provided, two in the tailgate pillar and the other two on either side of the rear seats.

On the road, the Laguna is responsive and steering is quick and direct. The decent feedback at the wheel is down to variable hydraulic assistance, which automatically adjusts the level of assistance in line with vehicle speed. This makes low-speed manoeuvring easier, and gives firmer performance for safer and more precise steering at high speed. A Renault might not be something badge snobs would consider, and, to be honest, the whole Laguna experience surprised me. I actually enjoyed my time with the car and, as a family man, I would gladly have one. The 2011 Laguna Sports Tourer is big enough for the kids, it’ll swallow all the shopping and it’s more than happy to effortlessly eat up the motorways miles. In fact I’d quite happily get ‘lost’ driving a new Laguna all day - the trouble is the wife would soon cotton on – it’s virtually impossible to pretend you don’t know where you are with the GT Line TomTom model.
