Derren Brown- Svengali

Sheffield City Hall - May 3rd and 4th

The phenomenon that is Derren Brown makes a much-anticipated return to the Sheffield City Hall for two evenings this May. Following his previous sell out performances in Sheffield, Brown returns with a new tour set to run through to 2012. A renowned and unique force in the world of illusion, Brown seemingly predicts and controls human behaviour. Not claiming to be a mind-reader, instead describing his craft as a mixture of magic, psychology, suggestion, misdirection and showmanship. Brown, who states that he loves writing and performing on the stage, brings a fresh array of complex, intelligent, theatrical tricks to the stage in; ‘Derren Brown- Svengali’. Little is known about the show as secrecy is paramount to Brown’s success; “I ask audiences to keep the contents of the show a secret so as not to spoil it for others, and I have to do the same. But I hope it’s fun and freaky and a great night out”. Following the 73 date national tour ‘Svengali’ will reside at the Shaftsbury theatre from June 8th- July 11th.

The Leadmill - Tuesday May 24th

Weaving intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, post-punk rhythms and melodramatic tones into an ornate and intimate sprawling of heady and psychedelic songs, this four piece from Los Angeles have been pedaling their pretty wares across America and other foreign lands since forming in 2004. Band members Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Theresa Wayman (guitar, vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals) and Stella Mozgawa (drums, keyboards) now make their way to the Sheffield stage when they play The Leadmill on May 24th. Following the release of their October 2010 debut-full length- album ‘The Fool’ the band have received a much yearned for inclusion in the BBC’s ‘’15 Most Promising Artists of 2011’’ and garnered praise and frequent airplay from resident Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton. Those who are yet to hear ‘Undertow’ or ‘Shadows’ but who are already fans of the Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joni Mitchell and the like are sure to appreciate the mystical, goose-bump inducing sounds of Warpaint. Peeping Tom: 50th Anniversary The Showroom - Tuesday April 26th 20:30

Screening as part of the Showroom’s ‘Cult Tuesdays’, 1960’s British psychological thriller ‘Peeping Tom’ makes a return to the cinema for one night this April. Critically crucified upon its initial release and subsequently serving as the ultimate blow in destroying the career of director Michael Powell, fifty years on the controversial film is now frequently considered a masterpiece. Aspiring filmmaker Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) who works for a British film company moonlights as a photographer, capturing images of lurid women. Lonely, unfriendly and sexually repressed, Lewis is obsessed with fear and how it manifests on the face of those terrified. What ensues is a voyeuristic, murderous rampage captured on Lewis’s 16mm. Much ahead of its time, ‘Peeping Tom’ is a terrifying portrayal of bizarre obsession, accompanied by an unnerving chill that resonates with the audience as the final credits roll; ‘’don’t let him see the fear in your eyes!’’

“Creative”

Noah and the Whale

The Leadmill - Saturday May 7th

Following his sell out show in the Steel city this February, John Bishop has succumbed to great demand and added another Sheffield date to ‘The Sunshine Tour’. Since winning the ‘British Comedy Awards Best Male Comedy Breakthrough Artist 2010’ Bishop has enjoyed mainstream success with sell out tours and regular appearances on BBC 1’s primetime comedy showcase ‘Live At The Apollo’, as well as ‘Mock The Week’ and ‘8 Out Of 10 Cats’. The Scouser sources his material from his experiences as a father, a stint as a nightclub doorman, his cycles across the globe and his time as a semi-professional footballer. What results is an intelligent, witty and hilarious take on life from this Liverpudlian everyman.

Noah and his Whale breach onto The Leadmill stage this May. Following the recent release of their third album ‘Last Night On Earth’ on March 7th, the four piece indie folk group from Twickenham headline a new tour taking their melodic, breezy tunes across Europe and America. Winding up at summer festivals Benicassim, Oxygen, Leeds and Reading it’s a busy few months of pretty synths, catchy choruses and euphoric harmonies from members Charlie Fink (vocals, guitar, ukulele), Tom Hobden (fiddle), Matt ‘Urby Whale’ Owens (bass guitar) and Fred Abbott (guitar, keys). Until mid 2008 Laura Marling-who has since received huge solo success and critical acclaim- was a member of the band, touring with them when her schedule would permit and lending her vocals to their first album. Since then the boys have borrowed the femme sounds of Emmy the Great, Lillie Flynn and Slow Club’s Rebecca Taylor.

The show is an uncomplicated and feel-good one as Bishop endeavours to enjoy –with all the spoils he can pocket-what he suspects to be a limited time in the ‘Sun’.

With memorable tunes ‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N’, ‘5 Years Time’ and ‘2 Atoms In A Molecule’ Noah and the Whale are sure to make a spectacular splash on the Sheffield stage this spring.

FEATURE | TIM MINCHIN

Mid-tour, how stands your current mental state? I’m pretty good, thanks! Having just come back from Australia, I’m a bit jetlagged and I think my skanky kids have given me a cold… but apart from that I’m swell. Although this tour is sort of stretched out (I started it in early December) and pretty monstrous (lots of trucks and buses and musos), it’s actually sort of fun and relaxing. The orchestra does half the work, so I don’t have to make my hands bleed any more.

R

aised in Perth and now residing in Crouch End (when he’s not on tour), 35 year old comedian and musician Tim Minchin is currently busy dragging his scraggy locks, black piano and 55 piece orchestra across the globe in search of those who like their melodies with a smack of savvy humour. This May Minchin returns to Sheffield with a new show-predominately consisting of comedic songs and poetry of varying subjects ranging from; inanimate inflatable lovers, social satire, sex fetishes and his own failed rock star ambitions. Intertwined with short stand up routines, Minchin will don his distinguishable eyeliner, ditch his shoes and deliver a ‘Peace Anthem for Palestine’ whilst parodying the power of the word ‘Prejudice’’. Ahead of his upcoming appearance, u caught up with the curious comic mid-tour to ascertain just what makes an ivory twinkling ginger cackle.

What can we expect to see on stage (aside from your bare angry feet)? One conductor, the 55 members of the Heritage Orchestra, Pete and Brad on bass and drums, my big black piano and me. Oh, and a whole lot of lights and smoke machines and a lift. And maybe a cage and a disco ball. And some other stuff. Do you have plans to adapt another novel following the success of Matilda, A Musical? I certainly have plans to write more musical theatre. Whether or not it’s another adaptation depends on who approaches me I guess. How do you feel about the recent news of Matilda’s journey to the West End? I feel incredibly excited about it. I would say it’s a dream come true, but I don’t think I’d ever been so audacious as to dream it. It’s a bit scary too, because we all want it to be a

smash-hit… and although we’re very proud of the piece and the reviews have been great and everyone’s very optimistic, there’s no guarantee that people will choose our quirky, lovely show over, say, something with songs in it what were written by a band. With whom would you most like to do a collaboration? Depends on the genre. The experience of working with Dennis Kelly (script) and Matthew Warchus (director) on Matilda was so incredibly cool that I’m scared I’ll never have it so good again. Musically, I’d like to meet Neil Finn or Ray Davies or Ben Folds. I like people who use words in interesting ways, but with honesty. Collaborating in comedy is more difficult, because it’s all about your own angle, your own world-view. There are plenty of people I admire but I wouldn’t want to saddle them with me! Having said that, Mark Watson and I have talked about doing stuff loads, but we’re both busy on our own things. On your Facebook page you note ‘’Guns, gospel music, porn, pottery (and other crafts), gambling, wedding magazines and crayfishing’’ amongst your interests. Any thoughts of ever combining these into a stage show? For we think it’d make for superior viewing. Wow – I think that was something I wrote for my MySpace page originally… which dates it to a time when MySpace was still a thing. You are right though, it has all the elements of a classic stage piece. FEATURE | TIM MINCHIN

It was once stated that you aren’t much of a consumer of comedy, can you credit this to your original style? I have no doubt that my naivety has been a bonus, both in my comedy and with things like Matilda. Not so much because I think my work is particularly innovative or anything like that – far from it – but simply because I’m less weighed down by the pressure to emulate my heroes. I don’t really watch live comedy, I don’t actually listen to much music, and I don’t watch much telly at all. I’m not proud of this and I can’t really explain it, but I feel like I’m doing ok so far, so I don’t get too stressed about being an ignoramus. Despite not being a great consumer of the medium –allegedly- are there any comedians past or present that inspire a cackle in you? Stewart Lee, Tim Key, Tony Law, Mark Watson, – pretty much any of the oddballs. To be honest, I really appreciate most of the comedians I see, I reckon it looks like a bloody hard job. Give me a piano any day. What occupies your downtime on tour? Downtime? What downtime? I spend it doing interviews for people who want to put my beautiful face on the front of their publications (among other things). There really is very little time to do much on tour, once you take into account the travelling and the sound-checking and the endless emails about other stuff and maybe a jog if one is lucky. I did, however, play golf twice in Australia. Which is pretty good, because I don’t actually play golf. Thus far what has been the most heartwarming heckle? I get a lot of teenagers – of all three genders - screaming “I love you”. I think they’re being ironic… you know, like metal-rock-fans… But I take what I can get.

Aside from the Bible, what books do you cherish? (I’m personally interested to know whether you’ve read any Tom Robbins?) Oh bugger, this is a hard question. I love McEwan because he organises his thoughts beautifully and always starts with a strong premise. Admirable. I like Rushdie, but have only read a couple, because it’s such an epic activity. I’ve read reasonably broadly, but not enough at the moment, and I have a big hole where the classics should be. Next to my bed at the moment, in very stages of consumption, is “Jasper Jones”, by a young West Aussie called Craig Silvey, Christopher Hitchens’ “Hitch 22”, Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn”, and the third in the “Twilight” series. (I’ve read “Jitterbug Perfume”, which was pretty amazing. What else of his should I read? “Even Cowgirls”?) Have you had the pleasure of visiting the Steel City before? Oh yes. I’ve had great fun shows in Sheffield. I’ve played the City Hall three times: twice in the little front room, and once in the big oval. And I’ve been for a couple of jogs up the hill there. I like it.

If you could own an inflatable replica of any celebrity, who would it be? Ewww. That’s a bit weird. Umm, John Candy? Might as well get as much plastic as you can for your buck. Any chance of an inflatable Tim amongst the upcoming merchandise? (For our pleasure) Ha. I’m not sure inflating me any more is a good idea. So many thanks squire! Pleasure! Thank you.

No longer banished to the ‘’little room’’ of the City Hall, Tim Minchin and his Orchestra perform at the Sheffield Arena on May 10th, for tickets call 0114 256 5656. www.timminchin.com

When travelling with a particular show do you ever find a necessity to adapt the dialogue according to the location of the show? Never! I don’t know enough about this country to get away with it, and besides, my themes (God, death, guilt, sex, cheese) are pretty universal I think. And following from that, have you ever had an entire audience appear completely dumbfounded by your deluge of poetic ramblings? Never! I sometimes definitely dumbfound sections of my audiences, but I always (nearly) get them back.

WANDERLUST|LOS ANGELES LOS ANGELES

We all have preconceptions about LA; either believing it’s just a smoggy, concrete jungle sans culture or an ostentatious, intimidating landscape of peroxide and enhancements taken to the hilt. Whilst aspects of the above are of course true, there is much more to the City of Angels than can be portrayed in one episode of The Hills. So don your rollerblades, your biggest sunnies and grab a Starbucks Tazo Chai Tea Soy latte to accompany you along a journey down the star spangled boulevards of Los Angeles. Destination LA doesn’t need to be overly expensive. If you hunt around for flight deals well in advance, extravagance doesn’t have to prevail. However us Northern folk must first venture to fancy London before even hopping a plane as the eleven-hour flights only depart from Heathrow and Gatwick. Prices to the West Coast range anywhere from £350-£500 for a return flight and land you in the heart at LAX.

lust for. Upon landing in LA, the question is, where to start? Don’t drag your heels for there are so many treats to see and taste in Tinseltown. First stop should be to your favourite celebrity’s paw prints on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Whilst you’re looking amongst the immortalized imprints of Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe and Mickey Mouse you may fail to notice that you’re actually stood at the Kodak Theatre- home to the Oscars and Hollywood’s

“la la land”

“immortalised imprints”

Though you probably won’t spend too much time slumbering, there are some fantastically cheap hotels strewn across LA. Days Inn is the American take on the Travel Lodge. Situated in good locations, clean and reasonably priced at around $50 a night they allow you more moola to spend in La La Land. But if you are going all out then why not stay at The Hollywood Roosevelt. It has prime location upon the Hollywood Boulevard and no doubt you’ll be snoozing upon the same pillows as the stars as this hotel is partial to the odd A list guest. If glamour is your thing then head towards the Hills to the Hilton or The Beverly Wiltshire- Pretty Woman anyone? But if you’re more partial to poolside cocktails, luxurious loungers and nights driving down the Sunset Strip with the likes of Motley Crue, then the Hyatt is the perfect location for you; it is the epitome of the sunny, carefree LA party scene many of us

glitziest film premiers. The Walk of Fame is also home to many other iconic Hollywood attractions: Grauman’s (Mann’s) Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Wax Museum, El Capitan Theatre and Hollywood and Highland Shopping Centre where amidst the threads you can also get an excellent view of the Hollywood sign. However the best view of LA can be found at the Griffith Observatory. A national leader in public astronomy and beloved social meeting place it is amongst Southern California’s top attractions. Whilst you may have the camera perpetually poised for a spot of celebrity snapping what you really need to keep your peepers alert for are a flash of a magic wand and flying cards, for the most exclusive invite you can obtain in LA is a ticket to the mystical labyrinths of Magic Castle. Only a magician can dish out invites so keep an eye out for Copperfield and the like.

As for restaurants and nights out, there is something to suit all tastes. For celeb spotting head to the Ivy on Robertson or Ketchup on Sunset. Fast food connoisseurs, LA is home to an abundance of quick stop places to fuel up, but with health being paramount to those aesthetically driven Californian’s it doesn’t always mean a grease fest. If it is something cheap and cheerful you fancy then you can’t go wrong with a Denny’s or Baja Fresh. And “palm - treed patio” of course if you’ve been partying and the munchies sneak upon you, a slice of pizza from Frankie and Johnnies on Sunset is divine. Us Brits love a bit of boozing and there is plenty of that to be done in La La Land. Head down to the Sunset Strip, home of many bars including the famous Rainbow (remember Guns n Roses ‘November Rain’ video?), The Viper Room, Whiskey a GoGo, The Roxy, Key Club and The House of Blues. Live music is on most nights on the strip, but even if it’s a quiet drink you’re after there are some great places to just hang out and have a few nightcaps. Notably the palm-treed patio of Santa Monica’s most chilled out lounge bar Warzsawa - you never know whom you may tipsily bump into!

WANDERLUST|LOS ANGELES Before you go out in search of a celebrity to seduce you need to perfect your attire and LA is the place to shop. FACT! Whether you’re after a cute vintage find or have saved your pennies for something designer, Melrose is a fantastic street to shop; it starts with boutique stores selling vintage threads and one-of-a-kind garments. Heading down Melrose you will see

some of LA’s more zany characters and a well known hot spot for people watching.

time to chill, put on some tunes and stare out the window. The metro system has improved dramatically in LA over the past few years and offers services up and down Hollywood Boulavard all the way to Downtown LA and Beverly Hills. You may find that to get to your destination you have to get more than one bus/train. Luckily day passes are available and for as little as $3. If you can drive (and remember

LA can be difficult and time consuming to navigate and is somewhat renowned for not having the best transport (mainly because most of the population wouldn’t be seen dead on a bus) but for us mere peasants then a good bus journey is the

If it’s a bit of designer you’re after then saunter down to the most famous zip code of them all; 90210. Rodeo Drive and the up and coming Robertson Blvd are also a must - both sporting the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and celeb fave Kitson-you will be frothing at the mouth. Those places are designer heaven, even if you can’t afford the eye watering prices then it’s (almost) as satisfying to gaze longingly through the windows and bask in the sunshine. LEGAL|MAKING A WILL

CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU The BBC recently broadcast a series of programmes where business guru Sir Gerry Robinson examined the reasons why 70% of the UK population never make a Will. The programme offered a fascinating insight into the British psyche and delved into the reasons why some people are “family’s future inheritance” willing to take this risk with their family’s future inheritance. In life, most people will do anything to protect their loved ones. So why should it be any different in death? Many people simply do not want to think about the prospect of death and therefore put off making any decisions related to it. The problem facing the family of anyone who does not make a Will is this: If you don’t make the decision about how your assets are passed on, who makes it? Unfortunately, in many cases, by not making your wishes clear in a Will beforehand, you may leave a situation where the family you leave behind end up in dispute with one another about who should get what. Most people would like to think that this would not happen with their family, but sadly in many cases it does. If you die without leaving a Will you are said to have died intestate and your estate is distributed according to the laws of intestacy. The laws specify how assets are distributed to family members in a fixed order. If you have no family members then 22

LEGAL|MAKING A WILL

your assets will go to the crown. The danger of dying intestate is that you will have no say in who gets what. Family members who you may not wish to could inherit your assets. Likewise, people who are not blood relatives but who you would like to leave assets to, such as unmarried “blood relatives” partners, may not receive anything. The lack of protection that long term unmarried partners have under English law is one of the areas that commonly causes problems. One of the main things the show illustrated was that the reason most people don’t make a Will is not cost. Having a Will written is usually a straight forward process which can be carried out by a specialist

Will writing solicitor, and unless your affairs are particularly complex or of high value, the cost of a Will is minimal. What it did illustrate was that many people put off making a Will because they do not want to confront the difficult issues that are “Will writing solicitor” raised by today’s modern, often fractured families. A good example is where a man who has children from a previous marriage has remarried. The problem is that he wants to leave assets to his children, often assets such as the family home that have been built up during the marriage to their mother, but at the same time he wants to protect his current spouse who lives in the home with him, protecting her in the event that he should die first. The perception

LEGAL|MAKING A WILL among many people is that this is an insurmountable problem and that one party or the other has to lose out, and this leads to no action being taken. In truth, a legal solution exists to most problems of this type. T he solution is called a ‘Life Interest Trust’ or ‘Life Interest Will’. With a standard Will, if you leave everything to your new partner your assets would become theirs. When they die those assets would then be passed to their beneficiaries, who may “life interest Will” be their own children, thus depriving your children of any inheritance. With a ‘Life interest Will’ it is possible to avoid this situation. You may wish to leave this to your children eventually, but still enable your current partner to live in it after you have died. It is possible to give your partner a life interest in the property, which means that after you die they can live in the property until they die (or remarry if you wish), at which point it passes to your beneficiaries. So the asset belongs to your beneficiaries (your children), but your current partner retains the benefit of it in their lifetime. In this way you can protect both your partner and eventual beneficiaries.

NOT GOING TO GET INSURED NOW, ARE YOU? THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK 6 points and a £1000 finenot really worth the risk, is it?

What the programme did highlight is that taking no action, not making a Will, is not an option. Inaction is almost certain to result in your assets not going to those you would choose and possibly even a family dispute. However complex your family or your financial affairs may be, a good Solicitor who specialises in Wills and Trusts should be able to find a suitable solution to carry out your wishes.

PROMOTION|ADVERTISING

MOBILE ADVERTISING SPECIALISTS Specialists in advertising campaigns, Chic Promotions Marketing have been instrumental in establishing mobile and outdoor advertising throughout the UK. Having been providing promotional solutions to our clients for several years, we can target mass audiences 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Mobile and Outdoor Advertising Is your brand always visible to the public? With mobile and outdoor advertising your name won’t be missed. The fastest growing form of advertising, mobile advertising allows your company to target all walks of life both nationally and locally; unmissable on taxis, buses, advertising bikes, billboards and digital screens. This means your brand can cover hundreds of miles every week, frequently visiting high streets, shopping centres, travel interchanges, restaurants, bars, hotels and business parks to name just a few possibilities.

The Benefits of Mobile Advertising

The statistics speak for themselves: over two thirds of the population have noticed taxi advertising, and over 50 per cent of people aged over 35 said they find taxi advertising easier to read, being on one eye level. In London over 43 per cent of people believe taxis encourage them to buy a new product. Over 90 per cent of people live within five minutes of a bus route, and over

half of the population have seen advertising on the side of a bus in the last week. People in the UK take 2.4 billion bus journeys every year and your brand could be with them on every one. 29 per cent of all adults use the bus for at least one hour a week and the average bus journey lasts 30 minutes. Easily the most cost effective method of marketing your company, unlike newspapers and magazines mobile advertising won’t be disregarded and will always be on view.

Types of Advertising With various attention-grabbing forms of mobile advertising to choose from, there’s something for every need.

Taxis Spending 95 per cent of their time in city centres, black cabs are ideal to build cover and frequency quickly, not concentrating on set routes. We offer Full Wraps, (complete coverage of your advert on the taxi – a creative and eye-catching method), or Supersides - (semi coverage of the cab, with the advert covering both sides of the vehicle) Another choice is a back

window ad, or tip up seats inside the cab meaning your brand is seen by passengers throughout their journey. We can also print receipt books featuring your brand, leaving your details with every customer.

Buses The size, prominence and frequency of buses make them unmissable. Catching the eye of both pedestrians and motorists, there’s various options to choose from. T-Sides offer the biggest impact, lifting your message above the crowds on iconic double deckers. Mega Rear ads cover the back of the bus, imposing, dominant and impossible to ignore, whilst Super Squares allow positioning on the nearside or offside, versatile and effective. Super Sides are 20ft long banners, giving the designer optimal space for a high impact message. Rears are a great way to get your company’s information out to the public quickly and effectively.

Advertising Bikes Ad Bikes integrate huge A-frame billboards to the bikes, enabling you to take your message directly to the

Billboards Outdoor advertising through the billboard medium is one of the most noticeable forms of advertising. With people spending more time out of their homes than ever before, billboards are unavoidable to both pedestrians and motorists, always there to see and on busy routes. Available in different sizes from bus stops to street level to huge HD billboards, you can choose to make a shocking impact to the public with this form of advertising.

looking for new ways to improve their service, providing clients with even better results. Our latest advertising option is Digital Taxi Screen Advertising, involving a digital screen installed into the driver’s headrest inside a black cab. This offers you the opportunity to run an advert, consisting of a video or just simple images engaging the passengers and making a big impact. Positioned directly in front of the passenger, your advert will be unmissable and offer a welcome distraction on their journey.

I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows, Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine: There sleeps Titania sometime of the night, Lull’d in these flowers with dances and delight, And there the snake throws her enamell’d skin, Weed wide enough to wrap fairy in -A Midsummer Night’s Dream William Shakespeare

~

Had Shakespeare penned the tale, the fluttering of winged faerie servants Cobweb, Mustardseed, Peaseblossom and Moth would stir a zephyr of sweet floral scents to rouse the olfactory senses and entice verve. Rather in 1836, renowned horticulturist Robert Marnock summoned humming bees, dancing butterflies, agile tree-dwelling nut hoarders

and other such creatures with his selection of flora from across the sphere. Set amidst nineteen acres of land and several listed buildings are the National Collections of Weigela, Diervilla and Sarcococca as well as a vast selection of natural flora and those borrowed from lands afar including Asia, the North American Prairies and the Mediterranean. Ergo, forming the Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Upon first being opened the gardens were only open to the public on four Gala days per year, otherwise admission was limited to shareholders and annual subscribers. In the late 1890s failing income, residential development and competition from free city parks lead to Sheffield Town Trust being called upon to save the Gardens. Fortunately they did just that and it was in 1898 that the free admission that remains today was introduced. In 1996 the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust was formed and along with other trusts this registered charity managed to obtain £1.22 million in donations; enough to secure a further £5.06 million grant from the

Heritage Lottery. The funds have been used to complete and maintain a full renovation of the Gardens, thus restoring the haven to its former magnificence. Peace instantly descends upon you as you escape the hustle and bustle of the Sheffield streets and immerse yourself in the flowers and foliage of Sheffield’s most peaceful locale. The faint buzzing of bees, the crunches of gravel beneath your feet and the rustling of leaves high in the trees as squirrels frolic are likely to be the only sounds that penetrate the silence. The gardens are an enticing labyrinth of aromas attracting an array of winged creatures, notably the beautiful butterflies that inhabit the gardens during the summer months. Lovers of photography- particularly Macro nature- will find the insects here almost as lazy as the humans basking in the sun, thus being able to capture shots of the usually timid creatures is relatively easy here. During spring and summer the gardens are the ultimate suntrap. Shaded retreat can be found under the many Blossom and Mulberry

trees. A perpetually warmer clime can be found in The Glass Pavilions- Grade II listedwhich are home to plants selected from the warm temperate areas of the globe, such as the Asian banana and citrus plants. Though events in the Botanical Gardens take place year-round, summer is when the land really comes alive. Sounds of Jazz and Classical music emanate from the gardens during early evenings in July as the tweets retreat to their nests and allow The Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra to entertain late into the night. Open-air theatre events are the perfect accompaniment to the beautiful surroundings. This August, prestigious professional touring Theatre Company ‘Heartbreak Productions’ tread the grass with ‘Pinocchio’ and Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’. Other events include ‘Art in the Gardens’, various exhibitions, talks and plant sales. There is little that could top a day of basking in the sunshine at Sheffield’s most glorious retreat with a picnic, or a frosty autumn saunter whilst crunching leaves and observing the spectrum of oranges and reds that nature adopts during its rejuvenation. However, whatever you plan to do whilst there, remember to go with your pockets brimming with treats for the creatures and most importantly…don’t disturb the faeries.

CUISINE|RECIPES Greek Roast Lamb

No longer in medieval times, we need not wait until spring to enjoy the succulent taste of lamb. However, the poor little darlings are in season and thus have awakened in us an insatiable salivation for their juicy pink meat. Accompanied by a Grecian inspired seasoning, this lamb dish makes for the perfect farewell to winter roasts.

To Cook:

Prepared in 15 minutes, cooked in 1hr 45mins, serves 8.

Stab the lamb all over with a sharp knife, then liberally fill the holes with the paste. Tip the potatoes into a large roasting tin, toss in olive oil and the remaining herb paste.

CUISINE|REVIEW Kashmiri Aroma www.kashmiriaroma.com

If you’ve wandered around Woodseats you know the scene – small businesses, many a sandwich shop and a few pubs for extra measure, but what you may have missed is the wonder that is Kashmiri Aroma. Hidden in the depths of a call centre car park, this is one restaurant you should definitely make the effort to sniff out. Upon entering Kashmiri you are instantly “mouth-watering dishes” at ease. The lighting is dark, the furniture elegant but cosy. Inviting and intimate it is perfectly accompanied by someone special. The fully licensed restaurant offers an extensive wine menu with a ‘Chilli Guide’ to help you choose the right wine to compliment your dish. Whilst perusing the menus your taste buds are treated to a myriad of stimulating flavours from the pickle tray. The extensive menu caters for meat eaters, vegetarians and serves Halal dishes. We went for the chicken Jalfrazi- accompanied by the obligatory beer, in this case Corona- Achar chicken and a Keema Naan to mop up the sauce. Swiftly served by friendly and attentive staff the mouthwatering dishes were of the perfection portion size. The Jalfrazi can often induce a deluge from the tear ducts but in this case Kashmiri got it just right. The sweet,

fruity flavours of the tomatoes along with red and green peppers were not overpowered by a malady inducing infusion of chillis. Accompanied with rice cooked to perfection and the aromatic stuffed lamb of the Keema Naan, the dishes at Kashmiri make for a hearty meal that isn’t too heavy. Though the restaurant was buzzing with those salivating for dishes derived from the Indian Subcontinent, the service wasn’t at all rushed and the staff were perpetually attentive. Kashmiri Aroma is without a doubt a diamond in the rough; at £15 a head (including two bottled beers each) it’s reasonably

priced and was money very well spent. So next time you fancy a curry, don’t be lazy and order a takeaway - stick your gladrags on and get yourself down to Kashmiri for a delectable evening of fine Indian cuisine.

Revolución de Cuba www.revoluciondecuba.com

The Buddha has hopped a plane back to Bangkok, making way for a swarm of rum fuelled, Spanish speaking Zombies. Eeeee! Those bereft at the recent passing of Bia Hoi and its zingy cocktails can now find contentment in the arms of Don Facundo “rum infused Cuban creations” Bacardi and the finest selection of rum infused Cuban creations conjured during the American prohibition of the 1920s. Aside from a few strewn vibrantly coloured cushions the new Cuban bar has a completely different feel to its predecessor. An abundance of fans stir that Sheffield air and instantly make you feel like you’ve landed somewhere exotic. The décor is an amalgamation of Caribbean beachside bar and 50’s American diner. A rich wooden bar stretches across the length of the left side and is lined with a selection of over 50 of the finest Caribbean and Latin American rums. Revolución de Cuba is of course all about rum. Feel the thrill of a pinch with the bar’s own creation ‘Rum Pinches’ and enjoy fine rum infused with flavours such as coffee, chilli, ginger, pistachio and passion fruit.

Cocktails But if a pinch isn’t enough and you’re after an early Halloween Romero style you can slurp on a Zombie (so deadly is this drink that it is subject to a ‘two limit’ rule). Served in a ghoulish green Zombie glass, this is not your average evening tipple. Back in the 30s when alcohol was banned in America -fuelling high society to travel to Cuba to indulge in all things intoxicating underground taverns serving alcohol in teapots and other guises was rife. Order a pot of ‘tea’ at Revolucion de Cuba and get something a bit fancier than a Yorkshire brew; don’t ask your grandmother to join, unless of course she’s known to be partial to the odd pot of absinthe with her Hobnobs. As well as serving what must be considered as one of the best selection of

alcoholic drinks available in the Steel city, Revolución de Cuba also serves teas, coffees and have an extensive Latin inspired food menu to soak up all that rum. Needless to say we’re very excited to be joining the Revolución and intend to make this Cuban inspired locale a regular haunt.

TRESSES|REVIEW Nüba Hair and Beauty www.nubahairandbeauty.co.uk

It’s always time for a pampering sesh and as always I’m here to bring you readers the lowdown of the hottest salons in our city. This month I popped down to Nüba in the city centre to see just what delights they held for my mane. The synonymous orange and grey colours of the salon front stand out at the top of West Street/ Glossop Road, with the colour scheme continuing inside; orange framed mirrors and pale grey and white walls. An impressive red abstract mural dominates a corner of the wall by the sinks, outlining a woman with long flowing locks, surrounded by flowers and fluttering butterflies, whilst “long flowing flocks” black chairs and sinks contrast against the walls. The salon is two shops knocked into one, with the reception and some cutting stations at the front; sinks, further styling chairs and a huge sweeping nail bar situated round the corner. Having only been open a year this summer, Nüba offers a full range of cutting and colouring services from a crew of eight stylists, including the popular Braziliana Blowout, weaves and extensions – something you’d be hard pushed to find in a regular high street salon – for all hair types; European to Afro to Asian; everyone’s welcome. On top of this, the salon also offers a huge range of beauty treatments, including waxing with female

All these warm rays blessing our steel city with sun can only mean one thing – time to freshen up that face and wake up to summer. As Chic Lifestyle’s resident beauty expert, I’ve been tracking down all the latest tricks to transform a tired, wintery bod into a summer sensation. This month I’ve popped down to Baseline in Walkley for a nail rescue and let Funky Divas put the bounce back into my barnet; as well as offering you some indispensable tips to flutter up those baby blues.

Luscious Lashes Flirting with a fluttery eyelash? Lengthy lashes are a thing of beauty – making eyes look bigger, brighter and more defined, adding an irresistible sense of femininity to an otherwise plain face. “ a flirty flutter” Lash management is, however, a fine art. Picture those faces piled cringingly high with slap, eyes struggling to open due to the weight of layer upon layer of fake lashes – stick to subtlety for understated glamour. Day lashes are very different to evening lashes – a flirty flutter is all that’s needed in the sunlight but by night feel free to transform your peepers into sexy, sultry baby blues. Temporary strip lashes are so versatile with so many variations available; try snipping

a full lash in half and sticking to the outer corner of the eye for a sexy daytime look, and choose graduated lashes for a night out – those with longer lashes towards the outer edge. “stunning exotic eyes” Lashes should be the last thing applied after the make up’s complete – never attempt to smother them with mascara – the resultant clumps will have you sobbing blackened tears. Urban Decay have a solution to this however – the new Urban Lash is specifically designed for fake lashes. Apply the glue to the fake lash first, stick as close to the natural lash line as possible and behold the stunning, exotic eyes which look back at you from the mirror.

Eye Shadow Blue Eyes – A technicolour face is not the most attractive of features; a vibrant blue eye should be given pride of place on the face. Stick to browns and more natural colours to draw attention to the baby blue. Brunettes – define the eye with “compliment your eye colour” black liner and dark shades to produce a piercing gaze; blondes try brown liner for natural beauty. Brown Eyes – Think of the colour spectrum: browns, yellows, oranges, reds on one side; greens, blues, purples on the other. Keep to the warmer colours to compliment your eye colour, and go big time for dark, sultry eyes with a huge swish of black liner and a smudgy, ‘just got of bed’ look. Green Eyes – Your eyes are a little bit more unique so make the most of them! Try a dramatic sweep of black kohl liner and smudge black pencil liner over the lower lash line. 41

Bassline Hair & Nail Salon 26-28 Commonside, Walkley, S10 1GB

I always have time for a pamper and this month was no exception – with my ear (or should we say, pedicured toe?) to the ground of Sheffield’s beauty scene, I was eager to discover what the new Baseline Hair and Nail Salon in Walkley had to offer me.

After dabbling between hairdressing, childcare and the running of a city centre bar, Nerris has come back home to hair styling. She insists that Baseline is for everyone; all ages, backgrounds and ethnic origins, from children to students to the more mature client; Baseline welcomes them all. Certainly experienced enough to tackle any bouffant conundrum, Nerris has over 23 years of knowledge under her belt, with a certificate in Education from Hallam University, a childcare Award and, drawing on her experience as a lecturer and assessor at Castle College, strives to incorporate teaching into the salon. The salon itself is in a prime position on the main Commonside road, decked out with glossy dark wood, sparkling chandeliers dripping with jewels and luxurious flock wallpaper. The main salon area hosts the cutting stations and nail bar, with the wash basins hidden away in the next room. As well as a treasure trove of hairdressing services, Baseline also offers a host of nail treatments; manicures, silk and acrylic extensions, infills, French polish, nail art and repairs. The newest addition to the Baseline team is Katy Nolan, fresh out of college at just 17 but raring to go as the salon’s nail technician.

Katy settled me down to begin, starting by buffing then gluing on a white plastic tip to the missing nail. She clipped off the excess length then filed the edges down. Next she filed down the ends of all my nails, smoothing the top where the acrylic meets the base of the nail, removing the ridge and buffing up the surface to prepare for the next stage. Using acrylic, Katy then filled in the space between the existing acrylic and my new growth of natural nail. The process of acrylic never ceases to amaze me; a small brush is dipped into a liquid chemi-

cal then the powder acrylic, forming a gel substance which is smoothed onto the nail and smoothed out. Katy finished off every nail, then set about filing and buffing the nails to create a smooth, thin layer, finally slicking on a dose of clear varnish to give a dazzling shine and sparkle. I left the salon with a shiny new set of nails – extending the life of my existing extensions and adding a welcome bit of glamour to my fingertips!

I’d had acrylic nail extensions applied a few weeks earlier, so my fingers were starting to look a bit sorry for themselves, having grown out and, in one case, fallen off completely. Thus the challenge was put upon Katy to refresh my finger tips and return them to their former glory. Greeted with a big smile and a giggle, BEAUTIFY | REVIEW

MOMENTUM|REVIEW Subaru WRX STI saloon Style www.subaru.co.uk

THE SUBARU WRX STI is like nothing else on the road. It combines power with precision and rally-bred performance with everyday practicality, putting it in a class of its own. Introduced at the end of last year, the 2011 Subaru WRX STI is a substantial upgrade to the high performance version of the Impreza. And it is a welcome comeback, because it sees a four-door saloon rejoin the range after a three-year absence from the UK. “combines power with precision” The major difference between Subaru and other brands begins with the balance and control that comes from its permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Boxer engine. But, unlike most performance cars, the Japanese motor manufacturer’s WRX STI doesn’t just excite while in motion. Its styling, both inside and out, is geared towards making petrol-heads drool. New bumpers, enlarged rear quarter panels and a lower ride height give the car a more muscular presence than ever before. Inside, the quality of the cabin materials has been upgraded, and the driver and passenger are assured of a secure and comfortable seating position thanks to the introduction of all-new RECARO bucket seats. Behind the wheel, your feet settle easily onto the drilled aluminium pedals and you instantly feel at one with the car. The thick, leather-wrapped steering wheel gives you easy access to audio switches and cruise control buttons, meaning you can concentrate on the road ahead without taking your hands off the wheel. The only thing left is a quick press of the push-button engine starter to bring the vehicle to life.

Aficionados of Subaru performance motors will love the sound the car makes when it starts up; a new exhaust system, with a bigger centre muffler and larger diameter piping, enhances the engine’s iconic boxer ‘burble’. And at the core of the WRX STI beats the heart of a champion the turbocharged 2.5-litre Subaru

the lights because, unlike most cars, with the WRX STI you control the set up. The Subaru features a default setting of 41 / 59 per cent front / rear torque distribution for optimum balance, and you can adjust this while on the move using the four-mode (Driver’s Control Centre Differential) system. The WRX STI also

Boxer engine. The lump propels the car from 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds and the smooth 6-speed manual transmission lets you savour every sweep of the glowing red rev counter. As you match revs to extract the most of the engine’s charitable torque curve, you feel the 158mph performance potential of the WRX STI firmly within your grasp. But the fun isn’t all about being first off at

Subaru has further tuned its threemode SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) system, which can be used to adjust the engine’s characteristics to best suit a variety of driving conditions.

MOMENTUM|REVIEW

You may have noticed that during this review that there has been very little mention of the name ‘Impreza’. Well, there’s a reason for that – it seems those six letters (WRX STI) are so synonymous with automotive exhilaration that the moniker has been dropped and the new model is now simply known as the ‘Subaru WRX STI’. But whatever it’s called, the car will continue to be a superstar – certainly in the hearts and minds of speedy Subaru purists.
