Maybe it’s lively atmosphere that makes the Mogul Room so special or perhaps it is the open-hearted service team that makes dining here so worth while. The menu is unique and unparalleled in Sheffield. The food is both fresh and mouthwatering. The flavours are fused magnificently. Yet there is only one way to decide what makes the Mogul Room stand out, and that is to experience its charms for yourself.

Welcome Editor’s Letter Doesn’t time go by fast? Believe it or not, we’ve already gone half-way through the year and it’s time to start getting out the sun cream and shades. Sheffield had cause for celebration recently as local lad Johnny Marray took top prize at the Wimbledon Doubles, and now we’re looking forward to Olympic glory with our hopes manifest in Steel City’s wonder-girl Jessica Ennis. Here at Chic though we’ve been too busy to start popping champagne corks just yet, as we’ve been hard at work meeting and greeting entrepreneurs, artists and restaurateurs a little further north, for this, our very first issue to be published in both Sheffield and Bradford!

Frankie Boyle

“A very sharp and quick witted comedian”

Frankie Boyle / Sheffield City Hall

Friday 10th August / 7.00pm / £25 / www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

Few television personalities have been vilified, pilloried and demonised like Frankie Boyle - from his Mock the Week début in 2005, right through to his hugely controversial and frankly, not-all-that-good 2010 series, Tramadol Nights, press and public alike have found countless reasons to turn on Boyle – it takes someone very special to make a 21st Century audience encourage censorship. Either way, Boyle

has had enough, claiming his current tour, The Last Days of Sodom, to be his last; a final tour, to heal Britain’s fools, to support its rioters and to offer the inchoate laughter of despair to a culture in free-fall. This writer isn’t foolish enough to assume that Frankie Boyle is everyone’s cup of tea, but I do consider him far

more intelligent than most; beyond the shock tactics lies a very sharp and quick witted comedian, with a pessimism suited to the times. Be sure to catch The Last Days of Sodom at Sheffield’s City Hall this August, if you can handle it.

South Pacific / Lyceum Theatre Tuesday 24th July – Saturday 4th August / 7.30pm Tickets £25 - £42 / www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

Widely considered one of the greatest examples of musical theatre of all time, Roger and Hammerstein’s fourth collaboration tells a story of blossoming romance on a US Naval base during the Second World War. This breathtaking Lincoln Center Theater production reinvented Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, sweeping the board at the Tony Awards, and playing on Broadway for two years as well as being broadcast across America. Now the enchanting, smash-hit musical comes to Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre for two weeks only, following its sell-out performances at London’s Barbican. Metropolitan Opera Director and Winner of the Tony Award for Best Director, Bartlett Sher, directs a stellar cast and live orchestra of 50 in this sensational show, including British musical theatre stars Matthew Cammelle (Phantom of the Opera) and Rebecca Thornhill (Singin’ In The Rain at the National Theatre).

Treasure Island / Studio Theatre Tuesday 17th – Saturday 21st July / 7.15pm Tickets £10 / www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

Get ready to walk the plank, sail the high seas and embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Watch Robert Louis Stevenson’s timeless adventure tale come alive on stage at Sheffield’s Studio Theatre courtesy of local theatre troupe, the Denys Edwards Players. Following the success of last summer’s production of Anne of Green Gables, the Players are proud to present another well-loved story, delivered with their own unique brand of comedy and exuberance. Described by The Independent as, ‘a delightful blend of the salty and the silly,’ Phil Willmott’s adaptation of this classic novel is a delightfully funny, action packed adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat whilst roaring with laughter. Be sure to join the Denys Edwards Players for piratical adventures, buried treasure and swashbuckling action!

Weston Park Live / Weston Park

Sunday 29th July & Sunday 12th August / 12.00pm – 5.00pm Free Entry / www.bigliveevent.com

You might have noticed something strange going on at Weston Park these past few weeks; folk gathering by the bandstand, the sweet scent of cupcakes and coffee in the air and the harmonious sounds of some of Sheffield’s most talented musicians carried on the wind. Big Live Event - the team behind this year’s hugely successful Yorkshire Unplugged event – are the brains behind Weston Park Live, a new series of summer concerts showcasing acts from across Yorkshire in the beautiful open spaces of Weston Park. Four events have already taken place, with each drawing a bigger crowd than the last, and two further concerts are scheduled for the following month, one on Sunday the 29th and another on Sunday 12th August. The concerts aim to make use of the Steel City’s beautiful outdoor spaces whilst encouraging the enhancement of local culture through promotion of local musicians. Most importantly the concerts aim to raise awareness of local children’s charities, Safe@Last and The Children’s Hospital Charity. Local traders are getting involved too, with Fancie Cupcakes and Temper Coffee both hosting stalls at the events. Coffee, cake, live music and glorious sunshine, if there’s a better way to while away a Sunday afternoon, I’d like to know about it.

series of portraits. The young people ranged in age from 13 to 22 years old, and were training to compete in a range of sports from fencing to tae kwondo, kayaking to marathon running. Some sporting careers flourished, while others faced intense social and financial pressures that forced them to leave the world of competitive sport. Blake continued to photograph all the young people, irrespective of their path.

Personal Best is part of the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games, and is also showing as part of Art in Yorkshire goes Modern - a celebration of modern and contemporary art in 27 galleries throughout Yorkshire during 2012. Brontë Relics Brontë Parsonage Museum Until March 2013 / 10.00am – 5.30pm £7 / www.bronte.org.uk

Alongside Dickens and Shakespeare, the collective works of the Brontë sisters are one of Britain’s greatest gifts to the literary world; so ingrained in the British consciousness is the Brontë mythology, their native Haworth and the surrounding landscapes that informed their texts, are better known as Brontë Country. The Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth has become something of an institution in itself, annually playing host to thousands of visitors seeking to learn more about the enigmatic family. The museum’s latest exhibit recalls the story of its own collection; how it came together and how it continues to grow as new discoveries are made. Complete with a colourful cast of characters, twists and turns that would seem melodramatic in fiction, and even an unresolved mystery or two, the tale of the collection is almost as extraordinary as the Brontë story itself. A must for lovers of literature, culture vultures and all those wanting to delve a little further into the world of literature’s greatest siblings.

In the Blink of an Eye / National Media Museum Friday 9th March – Tuesday 4th October Free Entry / www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk

Our world is constantly in motion; the National Media Museum’s latest exhibition reveals our fascination with movement and our desire to capture it through photography, film, television and new media. Alongside material from the National Media Museum’s Collection this exhibition will feature two new commissions by artists Bob Levene & Anne-Marie Culhane and Davide Quayola & Memo Akten. Broken up into seven distinct segments - Toys and Magic, Photographing Movement, Slicing Time, Capturing Motion, Stopping Time, Time and Motion and Seeing the Invisible - In the Blink of an Eye explores the rich history of movement on film, from the 19th Century magic of Muybridge, right through to YouTube users, The Slow Mo Guys. Be sure to make time to check out this fascinating exhibit, which reminds us what exactly is so magical about a camera lens and more importantly, in this Olympic year, revels in the joy of movement.

TENACIOUS D Interview

Back in 2001, I was a budding rocker; I had my first guitar and a bedroom adorned with Led Zep posters and Thin Lizzy record sleeves. Then along came Tenacious D, the powerhouse duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, who made rock music, well, a joke. My summer of ‘01 was soundtracked by the faux epic ‘Tribute’ to the greatest song in the world, and that outrageous Satanslaying video; in me The D had found a convert to that none-more-niche genre of comedy-rock. I have a genuine affection for Tenacious D, because jokes aside, they can genuinely riff - hell, I even have a soft spot for their cinematic outing, The Pick of Destiny, the butt of many a joke on the duos latest release, Rize of the Fenix. Their first album in six years, Rize of the Fenix went straight to the number two in the UK charts and took the top spot in the US; once again it finds Hollywood Jack and Rage Cage on fine form, providing riffs and laughs in equal measure. Chuff Media’s Jenn Nimmo-Smith caught up with the pair ahead of their live UK performances this month.

and the critics? K. Well every song has it’s own story really. I mean, ‘Low Hangin’ Fruit’

You haven’t released any songs since 2006, what brought the group out of its hiatus? K. Well, I guess…Love of the game? Yeah I’m gonna go with love of the

sible reasons as to why we came out of hiatus and then we choose one! OK, let’s go with love of the game.

What have Tenacious D been up to in this time? J. Well we’ve been working on our meditation, a lot of meditation. There’s been a lot of time spent in the Himalayas. There’s been a lot of exercise and diet. There’s been a lot of nose to the grindstone. That’s right, I’ve been nose to the ground stoned! We put out a DVD, about three years ago.

K. That’s true. The Complete Master Works 2.

was inspired by sexy, you know, sex. ‘Senorita’ was inspired by sex. Okay so I guess there’s a lot of sex in there.

J. The cover of the album is really a big raging boner. I guess the inspiration was orgasms. We should put orgasms on the special thanks list, I don’t know why we didn’t really.

K. Not until we get more, more and better ones. J. I don’t need more, I have all the orgasms I need. K. Really? J. Well, if you have more orgasms then they’re not as good, you know that. You’ve gotta spread them out. If you’re gonna want an orgasm every night, it lessens their explosivity. You’ve got to hold off sometimes, just to have a bigger blow-out.

How are you hoping the critics will receive the new album? K. I hope they rave about it. I’m gonna read every single review. J. I hope that they speak the truth, my only fear is that they’ll speak what they think they’re supposed to think. They’re gonna say what they’re supposed to say, oh these guys are just clowns right? We don’t take these guys seriously, right?’. That kind of bullshit. It’s lazy. I’m open to critics who will really listen to it and say what they really think, as I honestly think it’s the greatest album in the last seven years. And you say ‘why seven Jack, why not just one year?’ Well seven’s just the number that came into my brain.

Have you received any feedback, have you read any reviews yet? J. Everyone who’s heard it so far has creamed, they’ve creamed upon it. The songs are better than orgasms, it’s been proven scientifically. They’ve wired people’s brains and when they listen to the album their pleasure cylinders fire on all cylinders. K, can I get your back up on this?

There was a bad one.

J. What a dick. Well my mum likes it a lot. K. That guy’s either a liar or has the worst taste. J. You know what I wanna do, I want to go back into the archives and see who he likes. Maybe, ‘Well Linkin Park’s new album, that’s an album I can really get behind! That’s an album I can really sing and dance to!’. That fucking asshole can just chew on it all day long, and when I say ‘it’ I mean my shit.

plete a masterpiece, you know. But what else have you been up to?

What’s it like making music together again and being back together as a group? Is it the same dynamic or has it changed? J. You know, it’s better than ever, really. The older I get the more I ap-

J. I’ve been making babies too, but I just can’t find them.

K. Did you lose them?

J. I do love to roque. Roque and roll!

J. I don’t know where they are, maybe we’ll find them somewhere on the

So a fair chunk of your tour is going to be spent in Europe in June. What do you like about performing for this specific audience and what are you hoping for these shows? J. Well we’ve never played in Germany before so that will be interesting.

J. This time even more complete! We’ve been working very hard to com-

road!

Can you tell use a little bit about the inspiration behind the songs on Rize of the Fenix, and a bit about your songwriting process? J. Well my inspiration was really just my children. It’s kind of like when Creed found out about his baby and he wrote all those songs about it – like ‘With Arms Wide Open’. This is kinda my Arms Wide Open album. Would you agree?

K. I don’t know, that’s the first I’ve heard! J. I guess the inspiration was the haters, the non-believers, they inspired

We’re looking forward to seeing if the hunger for The ‘D’ is as ravenous as we’ve heard. But the UK has always been some of the best shows we’ve ever had. They just have a deeper apprecian for rock than the rest of the world, and it makes sense; I would say most of the best rock has come from the UK, and it makes sense that they would appreciate it more. Wouldn’t you agree K?

K. I do, I think the people in the UK are just a little smarter, a little more sophisticated. Thank you UK.

What was the inspiration K, besides fighting off the haters

Talking of British rock, what kind of British rock do you like? J. I don’t know if you’ve heard of these kids, the Arctic Monkeys? I like some Arctic Monkeys, and have you heard of a band called Biffy Clyro? We had to open for them. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, there’s just some really great bands.

So what are your favourite things to do in Britain? J. I like to go out for some curry and I like to just wander the streets, on a little bicycle built for two. I like to do a lot of tandem biking through parks, and just meet some people.

K. Get up close and personal. J. I like to go to a book store and curl up in the corner, read some Sherlock Holmes and talk to some different British people. I like to have a spot of tea and a crumpet. Or just stay in the hotel room.

Do you have anything else you would like to add? K. Whatever you do, UK, do not download this record. Go to the store and buy it. J. Are you really lecturing them on piracy. No one wants to hear you lecturing them about piracy, that is the death knell of record sales!

K. I’m gonna buy up all the vinyl, there won’t be any left. That shit’s a good investment. J. Yeah if you buy it all imagine how valuable it’s going to be? It just like buying stocks. It’s like the most precious stock you can buy. Okay I take it back, that’s good sound economic advice – not a lecture at all. You’re looking out for the fans.

K. Make sure you put it in a safety deposit box. Don’t take it out of the wrapper. J. Unless you have us sign it. But then they’ll never see that gorgeous poster inside of you and me naked, coming out of the flames.

J. But thanks UK, we’ll see you soon. And one more message for Europe: just stay alive. Because it would be a shame if you died before the D came into town. You don’t want to miss this.

Mind

106 Devonshire Street, Sheffield, S3 7SF Tel: 0114 327 76 95 Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. But hundreds of thousands of people are still struggling to get the support they need. Still unable to access the services that could change their life. Still facing prejudice and misunderstanding.

“Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem.”

Mind believes no one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We’ll listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner. And we’ll push for a better deal and respect for everyone experiencing a mental health problem. Through our network of local Minds we provide direct support to almost 250,000 people each year. The Sheffield Devonshire Mind shop is a fresh take on previous style charity shops and is set out in a modern format, fitting in well alongside the other shops in the Devonshire Quarter and appealing to the shoppers within this area. We survive on donations, and are always grateful for any, large or small. We have already received some great donations over the door since the opening which have been of a high quality; plenty have been top end high street and designer labels. New stock goes onto the shop floor every day at great prices! We also have a vintage and retro section, for men and women which we are keen to expand, stock permitting. This contains everything from dresses, jumpers and jackets to shoes, jewellery and handbags. Stock on the shop floor includes mens and womens clothing, vintage and retro clothing, vinyls, cd’s and dvd’s, books, bric-a-brac, shoes, handbags, accessories, games and much more. We often have original and unique pieces in which are well worth the visit for. We have also had a huge success rate with volunteers, lots of great people have signed up to help in the shop and are doing a fantastic job whilst enjoying meeting new people in a vibrant environment. The money raised in Mind shops helps us support one in four in the UK who experience mental distress. As well as supporting Mind itself by shopping here it is also eco-friendly; there is lots of high quality pre-loved stock ready and waiting to be loved again!

Three Corners of China www.threecornersofchina.co.uk

In my opinion, the average Chinese takeaway has become all too tailored to Western tastes, with the spirit of true Chinese cuisine becoming all the more difficult to find. However, the opening of a new restaurant in the city centre filled me with the hope that here could lie the traditional Chinese flavours I’d been yearning for. Three Corners of China strives to deliver authentic Oriental flavours, with the menu split into three sections – the three corners of China – Corner One: Cantonese Dishes, Corner Two: Sezchuan Dishes and Corner Three: Hunan Dishes. Each section celebrates the different parts of the cuisine. The names of the dishes are both impressive and slightly terrifying to an unaccustomed eye – if you’re after the regular chow mein or sweet and sour chicken then this is probably not the place for you. Filled with intriguing delights catered to true Chinese tastes, the menu is packed with dishes such as Spicy Marinated Pig Ears, Hot and Sour Strip Jelly Fish and Sauteed Bullfrog in Chilli Sauces.

The first sign that Three Corners would be something different was the pot of traditional Chinese green tea we were presented with on being seated, setting the scene for the Oriental experience yet to come.

“ Authentic Oriental Flavours ” Treated to a massive selection of the restaurant’s finest creations, we were presented with dish after dish of the chef ’s specialities, beautifully prepared resembling works of art rather than dishes of food! First came Chairman Mao’s Red Braised Pork, a speciality in Hunan style, which consisted of cubes of pork on a bed of lettuce and broccoli, in a sweet, smoky sauce. Each cube was half meat and half fat, favoured by the Chinese but we decidedly stuck to the meat! The Spicy Chicken in Hot Pot – sizzling snippets of chicken mixed with peppers and vegetables – was served over a flame causing the dish to remain hot and spitting; very spicy with a zingy aroma. Next up was Deep Fried Spicy Crab – a whole crab covered with chilli, peanuts and spring onion, then Chrysanthemum Looking Fish - stunningly prepared and decorated sea bass, divided into deep fried pieces and covered in a sweet and sour sauce – delicious. The Golden Sand Crispy King Prawn was tantalisingly tasty cooked king prawns, covered in a delicate dusting of batter and served within a pile of batter crumbs. We next sampled the Sizzling Black Pepper with Chicken – another sizzling and spitting dish, this was served with peppers and onions and lashings of black pepper and sauce for burnished taste with a kick. We finished with the Three Corners of China Spicy and Tasty Chicken in a Big Hot Pot – a massive pot of chicken pieces on the bone and vegetables in a rich stew, served with raw tofu, noodles, cabbage and broccoli for dipping, and the Aromatic Crispy Duck Half – shredded duck fresh off the bone, slightly crispy on the outside and very succulent. Served with shredded cucumber, spring onion, hoi-sin sauce and pancakes, this was delicious and definitely something I would order again.

The menu at Three Corners is not for the light hearted – a visit to the restaurant can be a true taste of China if you fancy experimenting with something authentic. However, if you’d prefer to play it a bit safer the serving staff will be more than happy to suggest a few dishes. Our tongues were left tingling with the new flavours, feeling we’d truly tasted a flavour of the Far East. Issue 44 | Chic Lifestyle Magazine

Paint By Numbers

When we say experiment with colour, we don’t mean blithely throwing as many shockingly shaded products as possible all over your face. Colour should be used sparingly and wisely; less is more and one statement feature is much more effective than a rainbow jumble. Here’s our top tips to colour harmony – but you’re only allowed to choose one!

3

Lipstick – Select a colour to compliment your skin tone (those with brown eyes should stray more towards the peach, blue eyes towards the pink) and go for a light, bright shade; the intensity of the colour is up to you. Keep the rest of your make up simple and finish with a slick of clear gloss. Eyeshadow – Copper is the latest favourite in the industry, complimenting all eye colours and managing to be bright yet neutral. With a sunkissed face a subtle shimmer of copper will be sure to dazzle.

4

Eyeliner – Although you may normally keep religiously to black kohl, try a touch of shimmery gold, electric blue or green eyeliner instead. Draw a subtle line around the outer corner of and below your eye. Blusher – For a true burst of colour, opt for a brighter shade than normal and dust it over your cheekbones, adding a healthy glow to freshen up your face.

Beauty Review | Halo Nails

- Halo Nails Beauty Review

981 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8TN 0114 327 0682 With the summery temperatures finally reaching the shores of Sheffield, hiding behind the cover of clothing is no longer an option. Now is the time to break out the legs, reveal the toes and fully beautify oneself in anticipation of the sunshine. On our quest to discover the chicest salons in the city, we made an appointment at Halo Nails on Ecclesall Road to see what treats they could offer. I have to admit, I was pretty excited about visiting Halo. Recently opened, the salon is managed by Amy Oldale and Becky Powls, offering a full range of nail indulgences, including Gelcolour by OPI, Shellac, Minx, Rockstar Nails, Swarovski crystals, silk tips and overlays and luxury OPI manicures and pedicures, plus man-icures and pedicures for the boys. The salon also offers Sienna X spray tanning, official tan partner of Strictly Come Dancing and the Brit Awards 2012. Decked out in a contemporary red and white style, the salon looks gorgeous and Amy and Becky are lovely. My toes were looking a little dejected so nail technician Amy suggested I try a sparkling set of Rockstar nails on my toes, plus a spray tan from Becky to get me looking rosy for an upcoming weekend away. My pampering started with the toes; Amy removed my existing nail varnish then worked on the cuticles, pushing

them down and trimming off the excess. She then filed them into a short, straight shape and applied a gel polish base coat, then a clear gel polish on top, each cured under the UV dryer. Then came the interesting part – the glitter. Available in a rainbow choice of colour from red to blue to green to purple, the glitter can either be applied as one solid colour or in three shades. I chose to go for the gold in three shades – dark bronze on the tips, gold in the middle and white gold at the base. Amy applied the glitter with a small brush, painting on each colour, then covered with a clear top coat to finish. After a quick spell in the dryer and file my toes were complete and looked amazing – fabulously sparkly with the three shades of gold all merging into each other, and smooth and hard to the touch. I couldn’t stop looking at them glimmering – love them! For the spray tan, Halo uses Sienna X - a favourite of the celebs giving a fabulous, natural glow. With this tan there’s a choice of four levels of intensity – 8% (for those with fair skin who wouldn’t ever achieve a natural tan), 10% (best suited to skin which would tan well in the sun), 12% (a dark tan which would be hard to achieve naturally) and 16% (an intense colour as used on Strictly Come Dancing). With Becky’s advice, I chose to go for 10% as I tan in the sun, regularly fake tan and like to have a rich, healthy glow.

Becky left me to prepare, stripping off and popping on a pair of paper pants, then covering up with a robe. Becky applied barrier cream to my palms, feet, elbows and any dry patches, which helps to keep an overload of tan from gathering in these areas. Decked out in a very attractive hair net and stick-on soles, I was ready to go, removing the robe and stepping into the tanning tent. Becky sprayed me with the tan as I moved around in different positions, making sure she hit every part with the spray and talking to me the whole time putting me at ease. Once finished, Becky dried me off with air from the spray and I popped my gown back on. The tan works by giving an instant colour, giving me a warm glow which gradually got slightly darker as the day went on, as the tan develops. Becky advised me not to shower until the next morning, and to moisturise as much as possible to keep the tan for longer, which should last five to seven days, but can last for up to two weeks with some TLC! After my shower the next morning I was left with a natural looking, warm glow, beautifully sun-kissed. I usually end up with tell-tale orange face, hands and feet after faketanning but this time it wasn’t a problem – I just looked like I’d caught a bit of sun – impressive!

The Hair Company www.thehaircompanysheffield.com

A transforming hair revival is a perfect way to give a refreshing new look for summer. As always, the team at Chic are striving to bring our readers the lowdown on the hottest salons in town, thus we found ourselves in Woodseats, at The Hair Company. Having been a firm fixture on Sheffield’s hair and beauty scene for over 30 years, the salon offers a full range of hair treatments from a quick trim to a total re-colour. I met stylist Sophie Rowlett, who’s been styling hair since 2003, having racked up an impressive amount of experience including work in Worksop, Retford and Essensuals. Having been blonde for – well, the whole of my life, I thought it was about time for a change. Every time I try asking for something different however, I still end up with blonde hair! Sophie showed me the colour chart and we discussed the shades; she didn’t recommend using bleach as it would be too harsh as my hair was already damaged, instead using a light blonde. We decided to add a few highlights and apply a darker all over colour to produce a darker shade.

Hours Tue: 09:00-17:00 Wed: 09:00-19:00 Thu: 09:00 - 17:00 Fri: 09:00 - 19:00 Sat: 08:00 - 15:00

Sophie started by sectioning my hair and adding the highlights, a few through the back and sides in a very light, natural ash shade to remove the yellowness of my previous colour. She then applied the all-over colour in between the foils, a light gold blonde to bring down the colour. After leaving on for about 20 minutes, Sophie washed off using Tigi Bedhead Dumb Blonde Shampoo, a colour saver for highlighted, damaged hair, locking in the colour and conditioning and repairing the hair. She then massaged in a conditioning treatment, using L2, a higher level of nourishment, on the dry ends, and L1 on the roots so as not to weigh down the hair.

Sophie applied the colour and left it to take under the heat, then used a Wella shampoo for fine, coloured hair, a less harsh product and followed with the Wella treatment to give a boost of moisture to my hair. After rinsing, she blowdried, using Tigi Bedhead Ego Boost as a leave-in conditioner to mend and protect my dry hair, and Bed Head Small Talk, thickifier, energiser and styliser to add volume and some much needed oomph to my head. Sophie blasted dry my hair, then used a round brush to add some lift into the roots. After spritzing on a bit of Bed Head Headrush to protect but leave hair light, Sophie ran through the GHDs to give a sleek look. The result was complete change – after usually leaving hairdressers looking pretty much the same for years, I’d finally achieved the colour I’d been after – a coppery, light brown with a blonde shimmer. Sophie then dried off the hair to show the colour, however it hadn’t taken as expected and was still an ashy blonde. As I’d wanted to go a little bit darker and warmer, Sophie offered to recolour the hair with a semi-permanent colour – we chose a light brunette, gold blonde; being semi-permanent the colour will lift after a few washes showing the previous highlights, and be more conditioning to my hair.

601 Boutique

West One Plaza . 5 West One Sheffield . S1 4JB The 601 concept came from the birth of our son Taylor. We wanted to create a name that was precious and personal to us that we could share with you. 601, being the time of his birth, had a unique feeling to it and that is something we have tried to create within our boutique.

“601 Boutique is a family run business from a background of Football and Beauty”

We wanted to give the store an edgy but sophisticated look that was not only unusual but completely different to what you would normally find in your everyday boutique, and that is because we wanted to be something different. The boutique is situated within the West One complex and we have been overwhelmed with the response and support we are receiving from our customers in such a short space of time. Our range is Unisex and we have already built a very loyal customer base, in particular the International Students of sheffield who are looking for something a bit different. Each week we replenish our range with new, exciting designer ranges which are not found within our city and would usually only be found in the capital! As well as mens and womens clothes, we stock footwear and accessories which all fit in with the 601 range. We appreciate that clothing has become an important part of your everyday life and that you like to take time in selecting your outfits. We understand that how you dress is a reflection of your unique personality. “You are what you wear,” as the saying goes. Although there’s definitely a degree of truth in it, our approach is better summed up by the phrase, “Clothes are fun”!

Spotlight | Pinemarten

Spotlight Pinemarten

Sheffield is home to one of the most diverse and fruitful art and music scenes in the country. Catering for all tastes and abilities, the city is a hub of creativity and imagination, boasting a host of galleries - from the small, intimate Old Sweet Shop, right through to the spacious Millennium Gallery – and music venues, from the ever reliable weekly West Street Live, to our annual crowning jewel, Tramlines Festival. Each month we aim to shine our Chic Spotlight on one of the Steel City’s most inspired artists. This month is the turn of electronic artist, music producer and all round nice guy Pinemarten, who, from years of experience, offers his advice to aspiring bedroom musicians County-wide - take heed. Firstly, I’ve always been rather vague when talking about my own music, but since I started this project in December 2010 I’ve tried to improve that and I’ve come a long way. Not in terms of chart success or popularity but certainly in my own sense of satisfaction and achievement. For those of you who don’t know me (and I’d be surprised if you had heard of me prior to this article) I’m a music producer from Chesterfield, Derbyshire - just south of the city of Sheffield - a ‘stone’s throw’ you might say. I’ve been a musician for many years and I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some great artists and labels but none have given me as much pleasure and contentment as my own creations in the last 18 months. I’ve also been given the chance to write this article for you lovely readers, so here goes. There are many ‘bedroom producers’ out there, and the wealth of technology available at such convenience now means there’s new music popping up everywhere whether you want it to or not. Probably right now maybe even right next to you, someone’s bashing something together on an iPhone or some marvellous Android app - I’ve not ignored such technology but I find myself most at home with a cup of tea and a keyboard. In these musically flooded times, it seems there’s a lot of focus on making the next big thing, or reinventing an old song with some fresher sounding instrumentation, but I never had half the satisfaction from trying that as from creating my own style of music - something that’s completely mine. I was asked if I had any advice to impart to any aspiring music producers for this article, and I think the first thing I would say is to decide why you’re making the music in the first place. Is it to find chart success or gain a foothold in the music industry? Maybe it’s a casual hobby or you want to score films and soundtracks? For me it was simply that I had things to say and sounds to make that I had no other way of sharing with others. Mostly, I wanted to take my thoughts and feelings and pour them out as music, even if no one listened. Once you’ve decided why you’re making your music, it’s then on to finding some inspiration - I find people and places a huge inspiration. I’m a big fan of rolling hills and open spaces but I love the urban feel of a large city like Sheffield. I should visit more often, it has to be said (and truthfully I find the train a rather relaxing and almost captivating way to travel). It takes just 15 minutes to get from Chesterfield to Sheffield, but the contrast couldn’t be more noticeable. Chesterfield is hardly a rural hamlet - but it’s a world apart from Sheffield and the atmosphere you feel as soon as you step out of the station entrance. There’s some more advice coming here… get out and experience different places, people and situations. I’m not saying you should take up fishing and join an angling society but bear it in mind, finding new ways to stimulate your creativity is (in my humble opinion) the best way to fashion something original and something you’re going to be proud of. I didn’t want this article to turn into a promotional blurb for my music, but one of the things I find most exciting about people listening to my music is when I receive some feedback, not always positive either but I just love it when people actually listen. If you place your creations in the hands of people who are actually passionate about music you’re more than likely to get some comments in return. You also have to understand that

no matter how long you spend crafting something - some people may not actually enjoy it. This is a pretty crushing feeling of course but it’s part of being an artist. Way back when I was a wee Pinemarten I posted my first EP on Bandcamp (for those of you who don’t know Bandcamp, it’s a very useful website where you can upload and self-release singles / EPs / albums / compilations etc and link it to your PayPal account so people can purchase them). I had no real intention of anyone listening to it at first - but the very same day someone posted a short blog about my EP ‘Bay’ on their site. I was amazed that it had been heard - let alone the fact that someone had taken the time to listen to and consequently write about it, that feeling has inspired me ever since and as I received more and more reviews my confidence in my own music grew. I felt able to write the music I loved and get some recognition for it, something I had previously never really found. Don’t worry about your music falling into a category or a niche – as long as you enjoy it, does it really matter if someone describes it as shoe gaze industrial techno? I’m sure there’s someone out there who could identify with that particular genre I just made up but at the end of the day good music is good music no matter how people choose to label it. If your songs cross the boundaries between jazz, folk and drum & bass then I salute you.

I’ve had some success with my releases, mostly because of so many wonderful people who wrote about them. I have them to thank for a lot of the promotion I receive and I’ve had so much wonderful feedback from listeners – one of them even wanted to manage my press for me which I am truly grateful for as I don’t really have a lot of background in that side of things at all. Everything is always better when you work together – no one can do or know everything and I would advise everyone who wants to share their work to make links with as many like-minded people as possible, you never know how they could help. Most of my songs have been about particular situations and places, or in some cases even simple things like breakfast time, but I’ve always tried to stay true to what the songs about, and not get out of my depth. It’s made songwriting a joy, and I can even construct whole phrases with relative ease, as long as I keep to what I know, and that’s what’s in my head. I’m not saying this is how all songwriters work, there are many ways to write great songs – but this works for me. When you have an idea, get it to paper, or some form of virtual paper as soon as possible and don’t be afraid to try new things that challenge you. These of course, are just the words of a relatively obscure but happy musician from Chesterfield and although I hope you’ve gained some insight and possibly a little motivation from this article, I don’t expect it to resonate with everyone. Far be it from me to say how music should be created or whether shoe gaze industrial techno should exist or not, but I’ve found so much happiness through creating music that tells my stories – I strongly urge you all to do the same.

I write semi-regular updates on my site: www.pinemartenmusic.blogspot.co.uk You can also find all my releases, mostly for free visit: www.pinemarten.bandcamp.com

Thanks for reading, Pinemarten

City Break | Liverpool

- Liverpool City Break Thanks to the creation of Desperate Scousewives on E4, Liverpool has been heralded as home of wannabe Wags and the infamous Scouse Brow. However, with a rich history on the banks of the Mersey, there is much more to Liverpool than hair extensions and fake tan. We took a trip to the home of the Liver Bird to discover what treats lie in store within the glossy jewel of Merseyside.

Attractions Liverpool ONE

5 Wall Street, Liverpool, L1 8JQ

The Liverpool ONE shopping centre is simply a total paradise for shopaholics. With 1.65million sq ft of shopping and leisure, the complex contains 160 shops, over 20 bars and restaurants and a cinema, all in spectacularly built modern architecture creating contemporary indoor and outdoor spaces. Stores include Cath Kidson, Flannels and Nike, and once you’ve shopped ‘til you’ve dropped, why not grab a bite to eat at Jamie’s Italian or the stunning rustic meets glamour, Zeligs restaurant?

Albert Dock Liverpool, L3 4AF

Situated on the banks of the Mersey is Albert Dock, the most fashionable area of Liverpool packed with restaurants, bars and attractions, all residing in the UK’s largest group of Grade 1 listed buildings. First opened in 1846 as a set of dock buildings and warehouses, it was considered to be a revolutionary docking system. After a decline of docking in the city, the complex lay derelict for ten years before reopening in 1988 as a tourist attraction. Pop in for a blast of culture in one of the museums during the day, then wile away a romantic evening at one of the stunningly decked out bars and restaurants lining the waterside.

The Beatles Story

Britannia Vaults, Albert Dock, Liverpool, L3 4AD

Of course, a trip to the ‘Pool wouldn’t be complete without a touch of the legend that is The Beatles. Famously formed in the city in 1957, The Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr) became the focus of Beatlemania which took the country, and the rest of the world, by storm. The Beatles Story recreates the spirit of the 60s, taking visitors on a trip through the history of band. Walk along the cobbled streets of Germany to watch the band play at the notorious Star Club, take a behind-the-scenes look in London’s Abbey Road Studios and embark on an underwater trip in the Yellow Submarine.

Tate Liverpool

Albert Dock, Liverpool, L3 4BB

Cram a little bit of culture into your trip with a visit to the Tate gallery. One of only four in the UK, the famous gallery hosts a selection of the 70,000 pieces of artwork divided over the four sites. Holding the national collection of British art from 1500 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art, current artworks on display at Tate Liverpool include Richard Dadd’s ‘The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke’, Jeff Koon’s ‘Three Ball Total Equilibrium Tank’ and ‘Pity’ by William Blake.

Food

Nightlife

Chaophraya

Alma de Cuba

One of the most popular eateries in the city is Chaophraya, located in the Liverpool ONE complex. Serving authentic Thai food, their menus feature classic dishes from the different regions of Thailand. Set over two floors, with an awesome al fresco terrace, the restaurant also features Palm Sugar – a spectacular 15 metre long granite bar, twinkling with Swarovski crystal chandeliers and peppered with stunning cocktails. Menu delights include the King Prawn Jungle Curry and Grilled Peanut Chicken, served as a truly luxurious taste of the Orient.

Perfect for a tad of celeb spotting, Alma de Cuba is one of the hottest (and most beautiful) bars in town. Set inside a former church, the bar is an eclectic mix of Cuban, Hispanic and Latin American influences, with a hint of impressive gothic glamour. Expect to see more than a bit of cash being flashed and their tempting list of cocktails is hard to resist – our favourite is the indulgent Chocolate Gateaux, complete with cherry.

5-6 Kenyan Steps, Liverpool One, Liverpool, L1 3DF

Il Forno

132 Duke Street, Liverpool, L1 5AG

Launched by Vincenzo Margiotta through a vision to bring real Italian food to Liverpool, Il Forno is an acclaimed restaurant with a real taste of Italy. Everything is authentic, from the olive oil, grown especially for the restaurant, to the ice cream machine, pizza oven and espresso machine. Try their veal Osso Bucco Alla Milanese for a truly indulgent meal, or perhaps a homemade, stone baked pizza, or treat yourself to sumptuous desserts like gelato and pannacotta. A true taste of Italian passion.

St Peter’s Church, Seel Street, Liverpool, L1 4BH

Newz Bar

18 Water Street, Liverpool, L2 8TD

Converted from a former 19th century shipping warehouse, Newz Bar is one of Liverpool’s most high profile venues. The stunning art deco bar, one of the longest in the country, red leather furnishings and walnut panelling set the scene for the perfect place to party, accompanied by a classic cocktail.

the restaurant offers an eclectic selection of modern European and international dishes, all served within the intimate setting of rich, dark colours and flicking candelabras encouraging a slightly gothic feel, with the odd clown thrown in for good measure. Follow with a tipple in the bar which comes alive at night, with live DJs and special guests… and the Circo FreakShow. A ‘dark vaudevillian extravaganza’, expect professional entertainers with stunning visuals, from fire-eaters to pole dancers.

Garlands

8-10 Erbele Street, Liverpool, L2 2AG

If you’re feeling in the mood for a wild one, it doesn’t get much much wilder than Garlands club, a firm favourite with the gay community. With a philosophy of ‘enjoyment is everything’, Garlands’ flyers have been displayed in the Tate, and the venue has even been the setting for a Tatler magazine shoot. Expect everything from house to vocal anthems to the sounds of yesteryear throughout the five individually unique rooms. And if it turns into a wild one, remember: ‘Garlands made me do it’!

Circo Bar and Restaurant

Britannia House, Albert Dock, Liverpool, L3 4AD

Roll up, roll up! Situated in the prestigious Albert Dock, Circo is a unique nightlife experience. With an intriguing circus themed décor and atmosphere,

St John Restaurant

Sir Thomas Hotel, 24 St Thomas Street, Liverpool, L1 6JB

Nestled inside the luxurious Sir Thomas Hotel is the St John Restaurant, one of the most exclusive eating establishments in the city. With oodles of classic style and sophistication with a contemporary twist, the St John has a reputation for style and creativity. Mains include Lemon Sole on a Bed of Braised Chickory with a Shrimp and Dill Beurre Blanc and a Muscavado Jelly, but if this isn’t enough to get your tongue tingling then how about the Whole Lobster with Spring Onion and Carrot Truffled Potato Salad and a Choron Sauce?

Panoramic 34

West Tower 34th Floor, Brook Street, Liverpool, L3 9PJ

With breathtaking views across the skyline of the city, Panoramic 34 is a dining experience which needs to be seen to be believed. Positioned 300 feet above sea level on the 34th floor of the West Tower building, the restaurant is the UK’s highest restaurant, framed by floor to ceiling windows. With a stunning, contemporary feel to the décor, from the sensuous bar area to the suavely understated dining area, the menu more than reflects the impressive setting. The tempting Taster Menu includes treats such as Lamb Sweetbreads, Seared Scallops, Halibut and Duck, exquisitely created by Head Chef Parth Bhatt.
