Welcome A
h, October! What a beautiful month this one is. The leaves on the trees are slowly dying a prolonged death, before they fall to the ground. The weather has become significantly harsher. The days have become shorter. The students are back in the Steel City. Yes, this truly is the greatest of all the months. To cheer you up, though, we have some treats (and, we promise, no tricks). We have been catching up with the absolutey lovely (in every way) Newton Faulkner, who has just completed his new album, Studio Zoo. We have also had a little chat with The Feeling to find out how they’re feeling (get it?) this month! In other news we went to the theatre to see the truly brilliant Stuart: A Life Backwards, which you may want to read all about.

Newton Faulkner
ChicLifestyleMagazine | Newton Faulkner
Stripped back with Newton Faulkner
W
hen you think of Newton Faulkner the things most likely to come to mind are his trademark dreadlocks and upbeat acoustic pop music. Faulkner’s take on Massive Attack’s ‘Teardrop’ and his massive hit single ‘Dream Catch Me’ made him a household name and established his large, very loyal fan base. Three albums later and Faulkner has decided to strip it back and takes his latest album back to basics with a renewed focus on making the music real rather than radio ready. Newton Faulkner’s latest single ‘Losing Ground’ which was released on September 8th, is the first single from his highly anticipated new album ‘Studio Zoo’. Faulkner has taken a wholly unique approach to his latest album, making history by live streaming the entirety of the recording process so that fans could watch 24/7 for five weeks from his home studio. Fans have been able to log in and watch every single detail of the recording process including guest appearances from Ted Dwayne of Mumford and Sons and Janet Devlin of X Factor fame. Faulkner’s last album ‘Write it on your Skin’ went straight to number one in the UK, selling over 1.5 million copies so there are high hopes for his latest offering which displays a different side to the singer songwriter’s personality. “I’ve gone back to my roots. But I’ve gone back beyond that to what I was doing before people knew me...I wanted it to feel loose and live, to be exactly what I do without any pretence or pop sensibility.” This album feels more raw and spontaneous than Newton’s previous work and a lot of the music that’s being put out at the moment. “Everything is so ridiculously clean and poppy these days. I don’t think it needs to be that way. This album has my chair squeaking on some songs. On one of the songs there are birds in the background because I forgot to close the window.”
In the process which Faulkner chose for this album, being live was the most important factor instead of being polished in a studio, it was “basically like a five week gig.” This level of exposure to the fans has given this album an edge and created an energy in the performances because there was a high level of pressure to get things sounding good since there was nothing to hide behind.
watching me and my brother play video games”, which was a rather strange element of the album making process but integral in the idea of breaking down barriers between the process of making an album and the music reaching the fans. This album definitely has the feel of a piece of work which wholly reflects the artist and is made with honesty and integrity being prioritised over radio play and chart success. “It’s very much a whole album, not singles for radio.” This album wasn’t inspired by anything in particular, ‘just general life, a lot of ups and downs. The third album was insanely positive. I look around and say, ‘’what do people need now?’’ This album has moved on considerably from the last album, “it’s definitely darker. I’ve been very honest. I mean a song like ‘Innocent’ is intense from a writing point of view.” This album “It’s definitely darker. I’ve been very honest. I mean a song like “Innocent” is intense from a writing point of view.”
“With this process it does solidify what I do, which some people don’t know. In a live set the guitar carries the performance, so we’re letting the guitar carry the whole album this time...You’d do a guitar take and I’d think it was good but then someone would be like ‘I think you can do better than that’’. On being watched by fans 24/7 Faulkner admits that it was a little intimidating but that ‘it would’ve been more intimidating if I didn’t have work to do. I had more than five weeks’ worth of work. It would have been weirder if people were just watching me do nothing.” “It meant I worked much more solidly than I would have otherwise, because there is an audience’. Although at points, fans had access to Faulkner’s downtime, there were times when ‘people were just
His songs are often woven with narrative but Faulkner doesn’t necessarily consider himself to be a storyteller, “Sometimes, not always. It’s something that’s very hard to do well.” That will be up to the fans to decide whether he succeeds in this or not in the latest album, but his previous albums have not disappointed and this new approach to making music, giving fans access to the process promises a new sound, showing a different side to the singer songwriter that isn’t necessarily as consistently upbeat but is perhaps even more real and honest. Have you got The Feeling?
B
rit nominated band The Feeling, are back with their brilliant new album Boy Cried Wolf which is released on 7th October. Chic talks to bassist Kevin Jeremiah about the record, its new sound and touring with a band that’s been together for over ten years.
What element of the music inspired the album artwork? It’s quite interesting! I think it was a feeling of nostalgia. We grew up in the 80s and the album felt very nostalgic to us, we were looking back at our childhood and we felt the artwork evokes something of the sentiment of the films and TV that we were watching in those days.
Oh nice! How did that come about? The photography was an idea we had and it was a bit of a fluke. We had an idea inspired by Steven Spielberg type stuff, it’s geared to be in this weird situation with lights and a runway, it was something that Rich suggested as he flies planes as a hobby, he had access to an airfield so we got the boy and a photographer and hoped for the best, it was a complete fluke.
You were so lucky with that! What made you choose Rescue as your first single for that album? It’s always hard choosing a single. For us there isn’t a weak single on the album, we like them all equally but they are all different, its not a case of choosing two or three of the best, it’s more that it’s the first time people are going to be listening to us for a good while. We wanted to choose one that audiences would be able to identify as being us easily.
14
How do you think your new record differs from your old sound? If by old sound you mean the first record, it’s probably the closest we have been to it since; it’s different in that it’s a bit darker. To me it sounds similar but more experienced and you can tell that we have evolved musically.
Did you intend to go a bit darker? Or has life experience affected the tone and feel of the album? We never set out to achieve one thing when we make records, however the circumstances in making this one were very similar to when we made our first album. We didn’t have a record deal at the time and we didn’t have anybody putting pressure on us to make a specific kind of record. I think that the freedom we have had has contributed to making the record far better than it could have been any other way.
What’s next for you? You are releasing this album then you are doing an arena tour this year? Yeah the album comes out the beginning of October, we’re trying to get as many people to hear it as possible and part of that is a tour for a couple of weeks across the UK, then we’ll see what happens from there.
How do you deal with being around band mates constantly on tour? Do you need your own space? No its great…we never had a problem with it and we all get on really well...we kind of wander off and do our own thing if we feel like it… it’s actually really fun.

Did you know? The Feeling • Bassist Richard Jones got their name from a neon sign on a bar (Le feeling) which he came across whilst in Paris. • The quintet initially performed as Super Fly, a resident cover band playing at La Tania Ski Resort in the French Alps. • Vocalist Dan Gillespie Sells and Richard Jones attended the coveted Brit School where they were members of one the most popular bands, ‘Horn’. • All 5 members of the band attended the University of Westminster where they all studied a BA in Commercial Music. • Dan Gillespie Sells (unofficially!) played Glastonbury at the age of five on the third stage which was used as a cabaret tent. • Richard Jones is married to songstress Sophie Ellis Bextor who encouraged the band to release a 4th record despite a split from their original record label in 2011. • To date, the band have won an Elle Style Award for band of the year and an Ivor Novello Award for songwriters of the year. They have also been nominated for a Q award, an NME award and the sought after Brit Award. • The band recently performed on stage with Beverly Knight and actor Dominic West for the coronation festival evening gala at Buckingham Palace.
ChicLifestyleMagazine | Jim Connolly & Lovelace
A Quick Q&A with Jim Connolly
Y
ou may not know the name off hand, but you will most certainly have seen some of his work knocking about Sheffield. Jim Connolly, the man behind such iconic Sheffield posters as “Escape from the Moor” and “The Man of Steel City”, has a wide portfolio of work which can be seen all over the city.
a graphic novel. It’s a huge thing to tackle but it’s my main arty goal. I’ve got everything I need apart from the time to do it but over a long period it’s do-able. I’d like to do some more album covers and book covers too.
His recent (and on-going) work on Kelhelm Island Brewery pump clips has stood out on bars in the city for months now, whilst his most recent work can be seen on this month’s rather scary Fright Night poster. We caught Jim for a few quick words!
Kelham had previously worked with Sheff art heavyweights Martin Bedford & Pete McKee. They had a heroes vs villains concept and wanted a comic-book style artist to develop it. They’ve really let me flex the old creative muscles and given me a lot of freedom. I’m most proud of ‘King of the Rocket Men’ as it sold out in record time which was a big ego rocket-boost!
Tell us about the inspiration for the Fright Night poster?
Last year’s poster was Voodoo themed but this year Fright Night will have a Mexican Day of the Dead theme. Luchadors, sugar skulls, undead mariachi bands and monsterous cacti are the order of the day. Think Robert Rodriguez via Tim Burton.
October will see the sequel beer ‘Radar Men from the Moon’ hit the pumps and there will be a third rocketman beer in 2014 , alongside a new series I’m currently working on.
How did that come about?
Are you a big beer drinker yourself?
What inspired you to become an artist?
What is your favourite type of beer?
Yellow Bus Events asked me to work with that theme. They are a fun bunch with an open mind. They are the only client ever to ask me for extra gore.
Yep I’ll happily take a punt on the most whacky pump label on the bar and it usually pays off. It’s good to see what’s out there and a good range of beers is a selling point of a pub for me these days. Sláinte!
Watching cartoons and reading comic-books as a kid played a major part in it. I wanted to grow up to be the Adam West Batman but drawing seemed like the next best thing.
I briefly lived in Congleton and the Beartown Brewery’s flagship ale Kodiak Gold is a belter!
How did you start?
It varies but for example I just drew a gangster themed commission so I gathered some vintage posters and old photos of gangsters to get the cogs ticking. Ideally it’s better when you can take inspiration from what’s around you though i.e. a strange looking bloke walking down the Moor.
I went to university to study animation & illustration then got into making online learning games (at Can Studies and Desq) after graduating. I did a sideline of comic-style posters and album artwork which eventually started to take over as my style developed. I took the plunge about 4 years ago to go freelance and these days it’s mainly comicstyle illustration commissions I do.
What are your aspirations?
I’ve been planning a comic-book mini-series for a while in the back of my mind. My dream would be to make it happen and eventually publish it as
16
How did you get involved with Kelham Island?
Where do you get the initial idea for a piece of work from?
What is next for you?
Alongside the beer pump artwork I’ve got some personal commissions to tackle next, including one for an English-themed Chicago bakery / restaurant which should be fun. I’m also about to become a dad which is scary but equally exciting!

Review: The truth behind the pornstar’s fame!
L
inda Lovelace’s career in porn was seriously short lived and yet she has made more of a long lasting impact on popular culture than anyone else in the industry. ‘Deep Throat’, Lovelace’s first and only pornographic movie became an overnight cult hit and despite grossing approximately $100 million dollars, Lovelace herself reportedly made less than $2,000. This film, fascinating, funny and deeply sad, documents the life of Linda Marchiano AKA ‘Lovelace’, in particular her tragic relationship with hugely influential husband and manager Chuck Traynor. Directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman manage to successfully balance showing the glamour and fame on the surface of the porn industry in the 1970s with the extremely brutal, dark side of Linda’s personal life. Amanda Seyfried excels in this role, her genuine performance pulls off starry eyed naivety and then steely determination perfectly. The supporting cast of this film is seriously impressive, including Peter Sarsgaard, Adam Brody, Sharon Stone and a particularly good turn from James Franco as Hugh Heffner. This film is hugely enjoyable but there are parts that are hard to watch, the directors have not turned away from the dark side but instead embraced it and documented it as accurately as possible. This is not a film to be missed.

A Quickie with Celluloid Screams Organiser, Rob Nevitt
O
ctober the 25th marks the start of Celluloid Screams; Sheffield’s own annual horror film festival at the Showroom Cinema and in preparation, Ben Halford speaks to Rob Nevitt, the programmer and organiser of the festival.
When and how did Celluloid Screams start?
I always believed there was a hardcore rabid audience for horror in Sheffield and South Yorkshire and in late 2008 the Showroom engaged me to program a mini “introduction to horror” season, all of which sold out, so then we knew a festival of this kind could work. The first edition of the festival was in 2009, and was a success. Since then, Celluloid Screams has grown into a highlight on the UK genre festival calendar that attracts people from across the country and this year is our biggest (and according to some) best lineup ever.
What are some of the new films lined up for this year’s festival?
We open with Motivational Growth, which almost defies categorisation it’s so self-assured and confident in its utter weirdness. Elsewhere, we have the stunning Israeli thriller Big Bad Wolves, microbudget zombie film The Battery and Euro vampire drama Chimeres. As you can probably gather, I’m immensely proud of this year’s lineup.
Carrie “reimagined”
T
he UK release of Carrie (2013) is just around the corner, early reports are positive despite the stigma often carried by horror remakes, particularly when remaking classic and cult cinema. Carrie has infuriated and disappointed ardent fans throughout the years due to a disastrous sequel and a lukewarm 2002 adaption. The 2013 remake is being helmed by Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry, Stop-Loss) and is
18
You also have a special guest attending. Any further information on that?
Mr Frank Hennenlotter, director of the Basket Case trilogy and Frankenhooker. Frank is a genre titan and we’re so pleased that we’re able to bring him to the festival to present several of his films on the big screen and meet the fans.
You’re also holding a special allnighter on the second night. Has this been something that’s been planned for a while?
An all-nighter is something I’ve wanted to bring to Celluloid Screams since the beginning and this year it’s happening in the form of Night of the [un]dead. We deliberately went retro with the allnighter, so we’ve got Frankenhooker, The return of the living dead, The beyond and Braindead.
Will there be other non-screening events held at the festival?
We’ll have opening and closing night parties with DJs, and the other main non-screening event is our annual art exhibition. This year it’s called Destination: Terror, and is a collection of vintagestyle travel posters for fictional horror locations. They’re the kind of promotional posters that might be produced by the tourist boards of towns, cities and landmarks of classic horror films to encourage people to visit them. Celluloid Screams is taking place on the 25th 27th of October.
attempting to subvert this notion and stave off the pitchfork wielding fans by proclaiming itself as a “reimagining” as opposed to a shot to shot remake. Brian De Palma’s Carrie exploded onto screens in 1976; it changed the face of the high school films and had a powerful impact on a generation of viewers and film makers. It was the first of many Stephen King novels’s adapted to the big screen and is still arguably one of the most accomplished, let’s just hope this iteration lives up to the name and grabs the attention of a new generation.

Woody Allen is back (again)
F
rom witty stand up comedy, to creating simply astonishing cinema, Woody Allen has been a statue of solidarity and continuity to the film world. He sets the example for all aspiring filmmakers, that you can be funny without having to delve into lowest common denominator humour. Often referencing his own life throughout many of his works he’s opened up the world to see his experiences and memories, this made films like ‘Manhattan’ and ‘Radio Days’ seem even more palpable. There’s one scene I can remember in ‘Annie Hall’ where it shows a flashback where the main character Alvy (played by Allen) is sat on a doctor’s bench, and he tells the doctor there’s no point in anything because the universe is expanding and some day it will just tear apart. This summarises him for me, a not so optimistic, existentialist who has the ability to make audiences laugh, cry and think all in sequence of one another. His work has evolved and matured as he has grown older but the essence of character and inside of him is still going strong, which is evident in his latest film ‘Blue Jasmine’ through the amazing performance from ‘Cate Blanchett’. We will always remember him for his sense of humour, but ultimately the way in which the audience could feel the viscosity and substance of his story-telling through incredibly visceral and hearty cinema. Most writers, directors and actors have at most a ten year period in which they are at their peak, and after this period they tend to lack the gusto, but not Woody. He’s produced 40 years of consistently entertaining work which is still going strong today, and its inevitable he still has some masterpieces left in him. Woody Allen’s new film, Blue Jasmine, is in cinemas now. Paul Haddock

Ed Sheeran – Collaborations No. 5
When I first downloaded it, it was something so new nothing like I’d heard before, now obviously it’s just typical Ed Sheeran/songwriter type music but at the time it was so exciting, could listen to it over and over again. Best song on album? Radio ft. JME
This album reminds me of... Growing up – as cliché as it sounds.
Because it’s an album full of the songs you hear on the radio or in night clubs that you love, but don’t actually know what they are or who they’re by. This album puts them all in one place. Best song on album? So Good To Me – Chris Malinchak
This album reminds me of...

M Artist of the Month: Mike Hughes
W
e’ve been speaking to local folk sensation Mike Hughes about his own genre of music, inspirations and supporting Miles Kane. Read all about it. How would you describe your sound? Apocalyptic Gospel Folk That’s quite interesting! What does that actually mean? It means songs about the end of the world or something within that realm, that sound like they’ve been recorded in a church.
So is it quite dark and morbid? I don’t think it’s really dark although some elements are. Not too dark, maybe a grey!
ost Metal music seems to me like a pause in the mind of a generation of men united by an early Judas Priest fantasy. It’s fine I suppose, but surely, remains brainless and static while music moves on around it. Now don’t get me wrong; I love System of a Down because I’m a real life human man, but it’s true to say that no revolution will be soundtracked by metal music. Explosions and cosplay maybe, but people grow up, right? We all stop worrying about how new our trainers look at some point.
So you’re supporting Miles Kane now, how did that come about? About a year ago a lad in Miles’ band saw me playing above a pub somewhere in Sheffield and said that he would like to work with us and record some of the songs, then Miles heard them and it kind of went from there really.
But I’m enjoying this UK Number One© record. Escapism and nostalgia are powerful bedfellows and if you like listening to music you already love then you’re in for a treat. Bands like Guns and Roses, Metallica and Velvet Revolver all spring to mind as you start nodding and smiling to this daft but fun record.
You’ve been around for four years, what do you think has made you stand out now? Some of the songs, which are now the singles I only wrote about two or three months ago. So I think I’ve just been kind of learning how to write better songs.
It’s a real trick of the mind, this record. How is it a new album? It sounds so old. Despite and because of that it’s genuinely charming and fun to listen to. Seriously, buy this album but make sure you budget for the hooch you’ll almost certainly crave as you listen to it on the swings.
Thanks for talking to us Mike!

Stuart: A Life Backwards
Having Not Read The Book...
H
aving heard very little about “Stuart: A Life Backwards” before seeing the play I went into this blind. As ‘research’ I skimmed a Guardian article on the release of the book, but that offered little insight into the intensity of the story itself. I must admit, then, that I walked into the Studio at the Crucible expecting a fairly mild story documenting the life of Stuart Shorter. Within four minutes of the play’s opening I was sucked in, though, captivated by the story of the charismatic quirky Stuart and irritatingly likeable Alexander. Fraser Ayres performance as Stuart stole the show (but I guess that was the point) and his ‘interesting’ yet touching speeches carried much of the play itself. Will Adamsdale, as Alexander, was weirdly attractive which was entertaining in itself. His depiction of a middle class writer / activist was
over-acted in places, but this didn’t matter because his seamless Queen’s English discourse was enough to detract attention from this. I found myself watching his performance in a state of mild arousal with undertones of annoyance at his Eastendersesque style of drama. The plotline meandered along (the audience laughed and gasped at regular intervals) to its climax, literally and figuratively, when we learn that Stuart was sexually abused by his brother as a child. This is depicted on stage play by play, which was disturbing to say the least. For me this could have been left out; merely stated as part of the narrative, rather than explicitly shown. However, I imagine that the opposing argument would suggest that we need to be confronted with such horrific scenes so as to fully grasp the situation. Overall the play was entertaining and heartbreaking through-out; a feat which is difficult to achieve. Charlotte Grainger

Having Read The Book...
S
tuart: A Life Backwards, a biography of sorts documenting the life of Stuart Shorter, a homeless man from Cambridge, is one of those books which you read once and it lingers. Long after you’ve finished, it invades your thoughts and makes you consider new elements that you’d never thought of before. As with anything that you really love in a particular format, I was apprehensive about seeing it adapted for the stage, I wasn’t sure how it was going to work and if they’d properly be able to capture Stuart the way that Alexander Masters did in the book. However, the second that Fraser Ayres walked on stage as Stuart, my concerns washed away. He had Stuart spot on and was instantly believable. The story, covering the events of Stuart’s life from his troubled childhood, illness, drug addiction, homelessness and tragic death, manages to be
22
truly funny and desperately heartbreaking in equal measure. The audience were laughing out loud and then shocked into unsettled silence within a matter of moments such was the easy control the script provided for the dark subject matter, just as the book had. The simple set, moved around by and sometimes made up of the cast themselves, was extremely effective. The focus remained on the people and not on the props around them. The intimate setting of the Crucible Studio was the perfect setting for this play with such an in depth and personal look into someone’s life. I can’t recommend this play highly enough, for those who have read the book and those who haven’t. It’s funny, touching and deeply moving. You won’t be forgetting the life of Stuart Shorter anytime soon. Laura Kay

Zero Budget Film Forget the Cannes Film Festival, move over Sundance...

O T
hanks to the arrival of digital film, high quality cameras have become more acessible than ever before, It’s never been easier to pick up a camera and create stories on little to no budget. The rules of film distribution have also changed; you can effortlessly upload your creative efforts online in a matter of seconds for all to see on a myriad of digital devices. Despite this we all know film is best experienced on the big screen, surrounded by your friends and total strangers. The Cheap Thrills Zero Budget Film Festival is an independent and free collaborative community film festival based in Sheffield and it was here for the third consecutive year last month. Once again it aims to bring the home movie experience to the big screen, encouraging young (and old) film makers to conceptualise their fictional worlds and stories and let the world see what they have to say. This year I was lucky enough to attend the event held at the Burngreave Cemetary Chapel, as I
entered through the chapel doors the audience (and filmmakers) seemed elated and excited to be there and it had a genuine community spirit to the event. The films varied from live action to animated with highlights including a martial arts spoof directed by a nine year old and a Thunderbirds homage made in a shed. Its incredible to see what Janet, Martin, Steve and Peter have acheived and their passion for film and the community clearly shines through with this event. In case you missed this one, the next event will be held in Loughborough on the 28th of September. For more information visit their website at www.zerobudgetfilmfest.com Sam Barnett
rdering a taxi has never been so simple with the Mercury Taxis Android and iPhone Apps; simple tap for a taxi!
At the end of a long and alcohol fueled night the last thing you want to do is pick up the phone and have an incoherant chat in order to order a taxi. Luckily, now Mercury Taxis have a new way of enabling customers to order a taxi; Mercury Taxis Apps. Mercury have developed a new App which means your taxi pickup is merely a tap away (that’s got to be easier than having to mess around dialing all those pesky numbers, hasn’t it?). The App is availble in both iPhone and Android formats, meaning you literally have no excuse for not getting this App. An App of that capacity and sheer brilliance must cost an arm and a leg, you say. Well we have some rather pleasing news for your ears; the App is free, 100% free! If you’re planning a journey in advance you can prebook with the App. You can set a list of “favourite” locations (if you so wish), meaning that ordering a taxi could not be made any easier, least you had a robot butler named Henry to do your daily bidding. If you require specifics for your journey (e.g. wheelchair access to the vehicle or a five seater taxi) then you can use the App to enter all of these details. The best part of this App is the “tracking” function, which allows you to track your taxi (coming to you) once you have made a booking. Yes, that’s right, the Mercury App allows you to stalk your taxi driver right up to your very door. Don’t mind if we do. Download the Mercury Taxis App now! (You know you want to…)

A Quickie with Sean Clarke
W
ith the opening of the new Moor Market in November comes a host of new stores and outlets. Luckily for beer lovers one such outlet is Beer Central, a new beer store selling everything from local ales to exotic rarities! We spoke to Sean Clarke to find out what the store has in store for us!
and ales direct from the brewers, dealing with as many micro-breweries as possible and featuring beers that are hard to get elsewhere. These beers will make up our main ‘local’ section. We’ll also be using Yorkshire wholesalers to source beers from all over the UK, Europe, North America and beyond – even a craft brewer in Hawaii!
So Beer Central is brand new, how did you get started?
When does the shop open and do you have any events lined up?
We’re (Sean Clarke & Deborah Jackson) big fans of craft beers & real ales and last winter we were in the Sheffield Tap discussing that Sheffield ought to have a city centre bottle shop. We decided to go for it... and then, along came the opportunity to apply for an outlet in the new Moor Market. All systems go since then!
Where are you sourcing your beers from? Are they local? It’s our strategy to source as many bottled beers
Our biggest event is opening day of the new Moor Market which is Mon 18th November. We’ll also have some fantastic beer gifts lined up for the Christmas shoppers! After that, we’ve hooked up with the amazing ladies of Seven Hills WI and will organise their first ever beer tasting evening in Feb 2014. Also we’re sponsoring the Foreign Bottled Beer & Cider Bar at the New York Beer Festival in Rotherham in November!

o, summer is well and truly over and ‘tis the season to get wrapped up warm and admit that your weekends revolve around Strictly and X-Factor (don’t try and deny it!)
A Quickie with James Morton
F
ans of The Great British Bake Off will already know and love James Morton. The very cute, Scottish runner-up from Series 3. We caught up with him at Off The Shelf Festival.
First off, the bake off; your life must have changed a lot since then...
In many ways it has but in many ways its the same because it’s not like you go on the X-Factor and you win a million pound recording contract. I’m in my 4th year of medicine but weekends and evenings are very busy doing baking, media stuff. I’ve got a book out which is going swimmingly well at the moment, I’m very happy!
Your book is going to be competing with Paul Hollywood’s ‘Bread’... Is he actually scary? No! He’s a cuddly bear; he just kind of has to put that on for the Simon Cowell-esque thing. Up until last week I was behind him in the charts but now we’re jostling for number one best-seller in bread so that’s very exciting.
Are you watching GBBO? Who’s your favourite?
Difficult question because I would have not hesitated to say Glenn until last week and now I know them and they’re all lovely. Howard’s very nice... he’s from Sheffield.
Yes, Sheffield Howard! So are you going to keep baking alongside medicine or as your profession?
No, I’m going to do medicine. I may have to take some time out, it depends what kind of television work happens but I’m not sure if I want to do that, so it’s all very up in the air. Baking and the media are fickle and it’s a very risky place to put yourself whereas I’m a very risk averse person.
If you could only bake one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Well it would have to be some sort of bread... it needs to be something savoury and it would need to be something that gave you a rounded balanced meal. Pizza! James’ Book ‘Brilliant Bread’ is out now!

I love the changing of the seasons and Autumn is definitely my favourite time of year – hot chocolate, log fires, long walks and roast dinners – how could the warmer months ever compete? The best thing about us now serving food at Fancie is that we can work with our suppliers, and use in season produce at their absolute best. Think chunky soups, big bowls of pasta and a menu full of slow cooked comfort food to warm you up from the inside. There have been a lot of changes at Fancie over the last few years and we will continue to evolve as our customers tastes change, but one thing that will remain a constant is quality and a passion for the best food – be that cake, a fine dining tasting menu or our mid week Supperclub, you are guaranteed great food cooked by our team of wonder chefs led by John Parsons (formerly of Kitchen, Ecclesall Rd) great service and of course, great cake! I am massively proud of what I have achieved with Fancie and have some very exciting plans for the future. I look forward to sharing them with you as they develop! Come and see us soon! Amanda Perry

Fancie Food at Night
Delicious Chilli
F
ancie, over the past few years has become a Sheffield institution. Famous for its cupcakes and other sweet treats, the brand has expanded with the opening of its Ecclesall Road restaurant which has a nightly Supper Club menu and offers regular themed food nights thanks to the expertise of their brilliant chefs. I’ve been desperate to attend one of these food nights as I’m sure that anyone who follows Fancie on Instagram would be. Food night themes are brilliantly diverse; past nights have included Fish and Seafood, Curry, Mexican Street Food and Fine Dining among many others. Tonight, we’re attending Tex Mex night, and having already basically memorised the seven course menu, it’s safe to say we’re excited. The restaurant itself is lovely with a vintage, homemade feel. It’s BYO and on food night it’s free corkage, which is an excellent excuse for a couple of glasses of wine on a week night! The food is delicious and in perfect size portions to allow you to fit in seven of them! Personal highlights included Turkey and Ham Pie with Sweet Potato Mash and Smoked
Coca Cola Ribs with Hickory Smoked Grits, which sounds very unusual and tastes absolutely amazing. Everything is cooked perfectly and is testament to the incredible skill of the Fancie chefs. My favourite part of the meal (as always) was pudding and it being Fancie, specialists in all things naughty and nice, my expectations were high! They were more than met with Peach Cobbler and Vanilla Ice Cream which was the perfect mixture of spicy and sweet and basically completely delicious.
Smoked Coca Cola Ribs
The fantastic staff and the warm, friendly atmosphere is what makes the night and I couldn’t recommend it more for an exciting, different dining experience and a brilliant way to try food you’ve never had before. Fancie have shown that they are so much more than cupcakes, but if you can possibly manage then you can buy one from the in house bakery for the way home. Not that I’m admitting to doing that of course, but how could you resist? Laura Kay

Shakespeares Whisky Files Let’s learn about whisky!
O
ur man, Chris Bamford, is back to hit us with some more whisky knowledge. This month we will be taken, in the steady hands of Chris, through his top picks of this month. Whether you are (or, at least, consider yourself) something of a whisky expert or a self-confessed novice let’s now take a brief moment to learn something we didn’t before. The first whiskey this month is the Larbrot and Graham Woodford Reserve, made in my favourite chicken frying state, Kentucky. This whiskey is a bourbon because it is over 51% corn (it is, in fact, 73% corn), it is made in Kentucky and it has been aged in new charred oak barrels. This one tastes of honey spice, leather (yum!), cocoa, vanilla and cream. Interestingly each bottle of this whiskey has its own bottle number. This whiskey is made in the oldest currently working distillery in Kentucky, which opened its doors in 1865. Larbrot and Graham Woodford Reserve comes in at 43.2% ABV and wil cost you £2.80 for a single at Shakespeares. The next whisky is the Longmorn 18 Year Old from single malts of Scotland range. This whisky is particularly special, since the bottle at Shakespeares is one of only 282 bottles in the entire world. The flavours boast ‘nutty, apple-y, clove and cinnamon’
tones. This is a classic Speyside single malt whisky. “Because it’s a bit older it’s a smooth whisky, but it’s a bit more complex than your standard.” says Chris. The Longmorn Distillery is named after a missionary who brought Christianity to the Speyside area way back in 600AD. This one is not for the weaklings out there, coming in at 51.4% ABV and will cost you the small price of £3.80! The final whisky this month is a familiar looking bottle that you may have seen gracing many-a-bar. Highland Park is a standard whisky in every sense of the word. Michael Jackson (no, not THE Michael Jackson, but also dead), the esteemed whisky writer, called this “The greatest all-rounder”; a dram for any time of the day. Chris says “It’s one that I do recommend quite a lot for people to try.” The taste is slightly peaty, though honeyed since it is aged in bourbon casks. This is a 12 year old, which is quite normal for a whisky. Coming in at 40% ABV, this can be drunk by pretty much anyone and costs just £2.80 for a single. That’s all folks! www.shakespeares-sheffield.co.uk

Microdermabrasion at Beauty Care
Eye Do That?
Five tips to avoid the biggest faux pas in eye make up One Colour Doesn’t Suit All
Most people don’t have access to the extensive pallet that makeup artists use, but we recommend using to to three colours when applying eye shadow. Try to create a style that shows a light to dark transition towards your lashes, to give your eyes more prominence. When choosing your eye shadow pallet, take into consideration your personal ‘facial pallet’. What will suit your eye colour and skin tone? If in doubt, go for neutral colours.
Drawing the Line
B
efore getting this treatment, I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive. The word ‘Microdermabrasion’ is a bit scary in itself and I had no idea what to expect. However, as soon as I walked into Beauty Care and salon owner Helen’s capable hands, all my concerns melted away. Beauty Care has recently acquired the latest Crystal Clear machine which is used to carry out the treatment which, it turns out, works by exfoliating the outer layers of the skin with special crystals. You can have it on your face or body and it works to fight against lines, wrinkles, ageing skin as well as more serious conditions such as scars, stretch marks or pigmentation. You can have the treatment as part of a course or as a one off treat, depending on the needs of your skin.
soft and clean. I cannot recommend this treatment highly enough, the staff at Beauty Care were fantastic and really made sure I knew how to look after my newly exfoliated skin. Treatment costs £45 for 1 hour. Beauty Care 368 Sharrow Vale Road Hunters Bar Sheffield S11 8ZP
I lay down on the treatment table under a cosy blanket whilst Helen removed my make up and explained that she would be using a little wand to move the crystals over my skin. I can only describe the way this felt as gentle sandpapering by a tiny hoover. This doesn’t sound particularly pleasant but it actually was and the whole treatment was very relaxing, especially at the end when I was left with a lovely face mask on in a dark room with relaxing music. I could easily have fallen asleep. The results were seriously impressive, my skin felt soft and it was weirdly satisfying to see the colour of the crystals after the treatment from the impurities from my skin. It’s been a few days now since I had the Microdermabrasion and my skin feels just as

There’s a fine line between using eyeliner as an enhancer or as part of a racoon costume. The main point here is: don’t overdo it. If you’re used to eyeliner woes yet still want to make your eyes pop, an easy solution is applying the eye liner to the upper rim of your lid. This process will intensify your lash line, making your eyelashes appear to have more volume. It’s best to do this by lifting up your lid and looking down into a mirror.
Stain Solution - Blending
Ever found excess product on your lids? When applying a thick eyeshadow a likely result is that it may smudge on to your lids when you blink. The way to avoid this is to always blend your eyeshadow. This will ensure that the makeup will stay put and generally, look neat; as well as avoiding the ‘borderline’ effect where the difference between two shades is unprofessionally obvious!
Location, Location
Ensure you consider the areas around your eyes; a perfect eye- popping look can be ruined when surrounded by dark circles. Experiment (preferably at home) with the folk lore of eye makeup and see what works for you. Unusual tips that work include using lilac concealer for specifically under your eyes as this covers dark circles. Once applied the green will counteracts with the red, resulting in less obvious blemishes – apply your normal foundation over this for a pristine look. Amy Catling

Shellac-ed & Tinted to Perfection!
I
t takes seven seconds to make a permanent first impression, so they say. Within my first seven seconds through the door of Ruby’s Nails and Beauty I’d been greeted with a warm smile from the owner, Clare Taylor, herself and seated in a comfortable window seat. Two customers were having their nails preened, whilst chatting away to the friendly nail technicians (erm...artists? masters?). It seemed that Ruby’s offered more than mere beauty treatments, Ruby’s offered a complimentary counselling service with every treatment sold. It has been 18 months since Ruby’s opened its doors the salon already has a number of regulars. The salon, which is named after Clare’s great grandmother, offers a range of services including spray tanning, manicures and waxing, and has built up quite a clientèle doing so. I had the pleasure of sampling a Luxury Shellac Manicure and an Eyelash Tint. Once seated I was confronted with an array of colour samples to pick from. “Indecisive” doesn’t even cover my reaction to this, but I finally opted for Wild Fire, a bright eye-catching red. Whilst my hands were massaged in ways I didn’t know possible, Clare took me through the salon’s history. Clare herself has had a number of roles, most recently, before she took on Ruby’s, she worked as a Manager for Virgin Media. However, Clare’s passion has always been beauty, this is what she first studied and something she was, inevitably, always going to return to. After having walked past
the shop a number of times, back when it was a shoe shop, Clare decided to go for it. “I just bit the bullet and did it and it paid off.”says Clare. Next my nails were fully cleaned and shaped, before the Shellac was applied. A regular sat next to me chatting about her day, the weather and her bad time keeping. After what seemed like a million hand switches from UV light to manicure table, my nails were done, though a little tacky to touch. This was quickly resolved by a quick wipe of alcohol and my nails were instantly dry and instantly Instagrammed to everyone I ever met. With my hands finished I was whisked into a luxury treatment room, where I lay down to have my eyelashes tinted. The process was quick and easy; two minutes with my eyes closed and a tint applied and I could really notice the difference. My eyelashes immediately looked longer and more defined. I left the salon feeling my at my ultimate best, just what I needed on a lazy Tuesday afternoon. I would highly recommend Ruby’s, not only for their affordable prices and luxurious treatments, but also for their friendly and approachable manner which was second to none! This Season We’re Going Plastic! The University of Sheffield, London College of Fashion and Bill Amberg Studio collaborate to bring Sheffield a unique ‘Plastic is Precious’ exhibit.
No way José (Mourinho)
N
ow the shorts and t-shirts are no longer suitable attire for the weather and the football season is in full swing, it makes clear sense to look to the Barclays Premier League for some style inspiration; and I don’t mean the player, but look a little further to the side lines, especially the side line at West London, Stamford Bridge, home to Chelsea FC, to the newly returned ‘special one’ Jose Mourinho.
W
hen someone says those two words “plastic” and “bag” together what do you think? Very little I imagine. You may have a plastic bag drawyer at home (come on, we all have one), but doubtless that is as far as your relationship with the beloved item has gone. That’s okay, because now is your chance to confirm the relationship status by attending the new “Plastic is Precious” exhibit at Meadowhall between 13th October and 4th November. Science will meet fashion with this thoughtprovoking exclusive exhibition exploring the future of the humble plastic bag, it will be on display as part of ‘Objects of Truth’ - a collaborative project between the University of Sheffield, the London College of Fashion and the world-renowned Bill Amberg Design Studio. So can you make plastic fashionable? The exhibit has certainly given it a good go, boasting a range of ‘alternative’ style plastic bags. The unique new design bags, which can be seen at the exhibit, were designed by Bill Amberg, designer of choice for celebs such as Jude law, Tom Cruise and Uma Thurman. “l chose to add leather handles to the bag as it has an intrinsic sensual quality that we are all familiar with. I wanted to juxtapose this luxurious material with the humble plastic carrier bag to provoke some thought about what, how and why we use our bags. Leather will provide the lasting and timeless quality we all too soon forget with a disposable bag.” said Bill, whose aim during the exhibit has been to bring sustainability to high fashion in this weird and wonderful collaboration. Even the uni is getting involved, the exhibition will also host a plastic bag amnesty, managed by students from the University of Sheffield encouraging shoppers to exchange their current plastic bags for one similar to the carrier bags
34
exhibited as part of Bill Amberg’s design. These bags, printed with slogans to remind shoppers that plastic is precious, will breakdown under UV light, eliminating issues and concerns of the future. It is hoped that shoppers will be inspired to customise their bags, potentially starting a wave of new thinking and new fashion surrounding plastic bags. “By sharing the science behind the materials we use in every day life we hope to encourage and support those who wish to live more sustainable lives. There are no easy answers to living green, but by changing our behaviours in small ways we can make a big difference to our environment. We hope that this exhibition will provoke shoppers to think about their consumption of plastic bags today and in the future.” says Professor Helen Storey, of London College of Fashion. You may be wondering why the words “sustainibility” and “plastic” are in the same sentences here. Well we were too, but according to a Professor Tony Ryan from the University of Sheffield plastic bags aren’t all bad! “In recent years society has been bombarded with negative messages surrounding the use of plastic bags. Scientifically speaking however plastic bags are more eco-friendly than many popular eco-bags available to the public, especially if the plastic bag is reused prior to its disposal.” he said. So this season why not switch your dirty looking eco-bag for a sustainable and, more importantly, fashionable plastic bag? We know we’re going to! Richard Pinfold, Marketing Director at Meadowhall commented: “We’re delighted to play host to this pioneering exhibition and hope it will encourage shoppers to think about their plastic bags as a fashion commodity. The message is to re-use bags as many times as you can.”

Ten years ago, you would see football managers wearing worn out tracksuit straight out of the dressing room, whilst Jose would stand out of the crowd in his fitted suit and Armani over coat, but now most managers throughout the football leagues prefer a smart suit over sports wear. One of the most important items in a man’s wardrobe, Jose believes, is a white shirt, suitable for any occasion, smart and sophisticated without looking to exclusive. Sooner or later, you will need a white shirt. And how does a man, as smart and refined as the Portuguese Chelsea boss accessorise his sharp look? The answer is, very simply. To Jose a watch is the only jewellery a man should wear and a man should have the choice of a few nice watches rather than necklaces, bracelets or rings. Get yourself the perfect time piece from Jose’s chosen brand, deLaCour, Genève. And men, fear not, Jose makes it okay to be grey. When Jose first came to the UK for his first stint at Chelsea in 2004 he was the attractive mix of salt and pepper, now almost ten years later he makes a perfect archetype for the silver fox. Slogan T-Shirts: Ever Acceptable?
T
here appears to be a constant stream of incidents reported in the press of slogan t-shirts being banned from sale for being offensive to women, people of all possible races, children, animals; basically anything you can offend, there is a slogan for it emblazoned on a cheap Fruits of the Loom t-shirt and flogged for £20 somewhere on the web. It’s pretty obvious that it’s not cool to wear a t-shirt saying (and these are the most mild, magazine appropriate examples) ‘Nice New Girlfriend, What Breed Is She?’ or ‘You Were Better Looking from Behind’, yes seriously, people literally buy these. But the bigger question is, are slogan T-shirts ever really cool at all? I am struggling to think of an example of a slogan T-shirt which completes an outfit, which says something genuinely funny on the front or doesn’t make the wearer look like he is desperately clueless about fashion, humour and life itself. There are the odd exceptions which seem slightly more socially acceptable; t-shirts with catchphrases from cult
TV shows such as Arrested Development, Parks and Recreation or 30 Rock can look cute and a bit eclectic. One of these teamed with skinny jeans and massive geek glasses can complete your hipster look, depending on just how pretentious you like your fashion to be. So the rule of thumb with slogan t-shirts is basically don’t offend anyone and don’t make anyone sad with pathetic slogans like ‘Keep Calm and have a Pint’ (the re-appropriation of ‘Keep Calm’ is a several thousand word rant for another time). If you have a favourite TV show or band and the t-shirt is fairly subtle and the rest of your style is already pretty cool then you can probably pull it off. Whatever you do and however funny your mates may think it is, it is never OK to wear an offensive t-shirt. You think that all the women in the bar are going to think you’re a hilarious cheeky chappy? They’re going to think you’re the worst. Seriously, the worst. Laura Kay
Tantalising Tartan
T
hroughout the summer, ‘90s dungarees, tie-dye prints and crop tops worked their way into our wardrobes, but now it’s time to revive the Beverly Hills high school style we adored in the 1995 Paramount picture Clueless. Remember Clueless? Plaid skirts, slip dresses and the bright tartan prints? Well in this years autumn/winter collections Tartan is a must have. Mulberry, Saint Laurent and Versace have all featured the traditional checked prints in their runway shows and high street stores such as Topshop and ASOS are also championing the ‘90s fashion trend. But tartan has now grown up from its school days and now can be worn as a quirky yet sophisticated dose of vintage attire, but in true Clueless fashion, you don’t have to keep your plaid outfit traditional black and red. Layer up tartan with this pastel skirt (£65) and vest (£70) from Topshop to create your own, up to date, 90s nostalgia look. Glamour Magazine’s deputy editor, Charlotte Duck, asserts ‘every girl has something tartan in her wardrobe’ and if you don’t then this autumn season is the best time to invest, even if it something as simple as this Barbour Lifestyle Twill Weave Scarf, £39.95. The beautiful thing about the British check is that it can match up to any personal style; from the Vivienne Westwood-esque punk approach or the classy, sophisticated looked that mirrors the prim and pretty. It isn’t just the women donning this autumn’s trend, Thom Browne, Burberry Prorsum and Chanel also sent their men down the runway in the Scottish fabric. Catherine Taylor

Sexting: Why Do We Reveal So Much?
S
exting, up until recently was not even a word let alone a cultural phenomenon yet it is becoming increasingly common especially now that everybody has a smart phone and access to picture messaging, apps such as Snapchat and are constantly glued to Twitter and Facebook. Sexting is still viewed with social stigma, as something which is the height of stupidity but is somewhat more acceptable if it’s kept private; the stigma is only attached once it enters the public domain. Studies show that this has led to people who sext considering it as just harmless fun whereas those who don’t, tend to view it as dangerous, having only experienced it negatively via depictions in the media. Studies show that 80% of undergraduates have received sexts, whilst 67% admit to having sent them, 46% of these being picture messages, so what makes people to do it? Examples from high profile celebrities and politicians having their private photos and messages splashed all over magazines and the internet have shown that there are huge social risks to this behaviour with leaking leading to social humiliation and alienation. But research
suggests that instead of deterring people from sexting, it actually drives them to do it. Positive expectations of sexting outweigh thinking about the possible socially disastrous consequences in favour of feeling a rush of exhilaration, partly from doing something with social danger attached to it. Studies show that this is the same process linked to the reasons behind excessive alcohol and drug use as well as gambling. There are endless ‘how to’ guides about sexting online and in magazines, all of which treat it as a bit of fun, with lots of tips on how to successfully keep it private, which is in huge contrast to the current trend of sharing as much as possible via social media. But this is part of the reason, according to researchers, why sexting has become so common. The threshold for embarrassment has increased because of people’s constant online presence. They are used to revealing a lot about themselves to a large, anonymous audience that revealing a lot (quite literally) to just one person privately seems less intimidating. Remember, however chilled out you are about sexting, to make sure it stays between the two of you, when the consequences actually happen, they’re almost definitely not worth that adrenaline rush! Why Love Hurts, Literally
W
hile many of us can agree that love hurts, we don’t tend to mean it in the literal sense. However, recent studies have shown that “heartbreak” might not just be a figure of speech. Psychologists have discovered a link between the social pain we feel caused by a breakup and physical pain. In an experiment, participants had to complete various tasks, some social and some physical, whilst inside a brain imaging machine. The psychologists found that the tasks which involved withstanding pain (in this case, a hot stimulation on their forearm) and those involving social pain (looking at pictures of an ex) sparked the same neural responses in the brain. They also shared the same sensory regions: suggesting a clear link between the two types of pain.
Wine = Happiness
A wine a day makes Betty a happy girl
H
ere’s an excuse to drink, if ever we needed one, a recent study has found that people who drink wine in moderation are in a lower risk category when it comes to developing depression. Well, that’s good enough for us! Crack open a bottle of red! The charicature of a depressed man (I’m thinking Bernard Black, here) weeping into an overflowing glass of merlot may be the opposite of wine drinkers in reality. Whilst previous studies have suggested
38
that the increase in alcohol consumption globally (yeah, you know who you are…) is related to higher percentages of people suffering with mental health problems, this study contrarily suggests a link between drinking wine and low risks of depression. The study followed 5,500 light-to-moderate wine drinkers for a period of up to seven years and, thankfully for us, he results showed that those who drank two to seven small glasses of wine per week (no, not all in one night) were the least depressed over that period. Well, that’s good enough for us; pour me another one! Charlotte Grainger

This isn’t the first suggestion of a link between a broken heart and the real pain it can cause. In 2012, Majorie and James Landis, who had been married 65 years, died only 88 minutes apart. A group of doctors at Johns Hopkins University had previously reported a rare but lethal heart condition caused by acute emotional distress, otherwise known as “broken heart syndrome.” On the other hand, studies have found that the presence of a partner can help relieve physical pain: it appears love can heal as well as hurt. Is Beauty Really In The Eye Of The Beholder? Do you feel pretty? Oh so pretty? Do you feel pretty and witty and bright? Do you let others dictate how attractive you feel? Do you prescribe to the notion that beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Or do you believe there is one ultimate image of beauty that is the aim for all mankind? Chic Lifestyle Magazine discusses.
For
Against “We need to learn to feel beautiful outside of the eye of the beholder.”
P
hysical beauty may be defined as taste. Just in the same way that a person could prefer documentary films to action, (usually) without any retaliation or accusations of being judgemental, it is widely known that differing attraction to an individual can be categorised as evidence that people have their own opinions. This would suggest evidence for the above statement – if beauty was only measured physically. The moral component of beauty surely exists. The Kardashian clan are seen as physically attractive yet their reality stardom is often a repulsive feature. Even outside of the physical perceptions, the personal life of Amy Winehouse was unappreciated despite the popularity of her music. A shared opinion seems to exist where substance owns the majority of steps in the race to beauty; and the concept of being ‘good’ yet ‘interesting’ is what we aim for. There is also the issue of the beholder themselves – who judges their beauty? Are we subject only to the views of others to truly have that feeling of beauty? Logically speaking, we do feel more positive about ourselves when someone calls us beautiful; this isn’t necessarily due to the wise words of our judge, but the act of accepting that idea in our own minds. The feeling of being beautiful is one we can only give to ourselves. Although this proverb has an element to allow our own diverse views to exist, it also suggests that other people have the right to judge others by taking on the beholder role. Substance is held in higher esteem than physical attributes and more widely sought after. Without the ambition of substance we would not aim to be the perfect version of ourselves, and truly feel beautiful against the ideas of any outside ‘beholders’. Amy Catling
“What is perceived as beautiful changes with time, but we can all feel beautiful if we are take on the role of the beholder ourselves.”
T
his statement is ambiguous. Whilst it could be seen to give a lot of power to the ‘beholder’ and their judgemental eyes, it is much more likely to mean that beauty is subjective. Although sometimes it might feel like there is one supermodel ideal that we all need to aim for, actually, regardless of what you do, wear or look like your ‘beauty’ inside and out will always be judged differently by other people. Even though you are only projecting one image outwardly it will be received in a new way by every individual you encounter. Beauty is perceived uniquely by everybody and is therefore, in the eye of the beholder. I love this saying, the positivity of thinking that although you may not feel attractive compared to the unattainable images plastered all over magazines, to those who meet you, get to know you and care about you, you are beautiful. Or even that every day, you are the beholder of your own appearance and that having a positive attitude and positive influences can make you judge yourself kindly and see beauty instead of imperfections. I think that more than anything, your own eyes are the ‘beholder’ and in this way, it’s true because there is no beautiful or ugly, there are only perceptions of beauty which are all down to the individual. The definition of beauty is fluid and constantly changing, it’s entirely different now to what it was ten years ago, and even more so than what it was a hundred years ago and what it will be in a hundred years time. ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ including yourself and therefore striving to look like anyone else or a certain, fashionable, out of the mould way isn’t the way to achieve perfection, because it is always unique. Laura Kay
Made Up Men?
M Brand.
ake up for men up until recently has been confined to a bit of a niche market, that is to goths, emos, 80’s rockstars and Russell
Men’s beauty has always been a secondary topic to womens and has always been met with slight derision. Recently, however there has been a bit of a man make up revival with perhaps the most famous face of it being teen idol (and adult’s secret idol) Harry Styles openly wearing eyeliner and lipstick on the red carpet, and quite frankly looking good in it. Male grooming is definitely on the rise with facials, man-icures (get it?) and boyzilians (sorry) all becoming more commonplace so why is there still the stigma attached to a boy getting beauty treatments? Maybe it’s disappearing. Beauticians are reporting record high numbers of male clients and the male beauty industry is reportedly valued at £600 million. Gucci’s Tom Ford is launching a new all male cosmetic range, this surely means it’s only a matter of time before there’s a copycat high street range in Topman. Bring on the male beauty revolution, it’s about time men faced the same appearance related dilemmas as women; the pain and extreme planning of waxing, stupidly expensive manicures and a silly amount of make up propaganda to wade through until you find something that just makes your face looks nice. Which is basically what we all want, isn’t it?

Tim Tests It: Bling vs Budget By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist
Tim’s Top Tips For Buying A New Car
B
uying the latest 63 plate means you’ll get a manufacturer-backed warranty; you won’t have to face an MOT test for three years and you might be able to gain from special offers on servicing packages. On the other hand, there are downsides to steer clear of. Concealed extras can bring unpleasant surprises, and speedy depreciation means that an up-to-the-minute motor comes at a price. Here are my top tips if you’re getting in the mood for a brand new car purchase:
Budget with care:
• Aim to keep a new vehicle for at least three years to smooth out the cost of rapid early depreciation • Make sure your budget includes insurance and road tax • If you need to borrow cash, shop around for a loan before visiting the dealer. It’ll be cheaper than a finance package.
Watch out for hidden extras: Bling: Audi A4 S Line Saloon

T
f you’re after a prestige symbol in the compact executive car market then four shiny silver rings should do it.
The Audi emblem of four linked circles will elevate your standing in the hierarchical world of business in an instant. The logo denotes one of Germany’s oldest automobile manufacturers and it has represented quality for generations. It symbolizes the merger in 1932 of four previously independent motor vehicle producers: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. Audis tend to have a less aggressive perceived image than, say, BMWs and, to some extent, the make is still an enigma. Why? Well, it’s a high-end luxury brand, but its philosophy has always been about understatement. It’s never been about shouting from every rooftop – and that tends to be appreciated by motorists who want motion without commotion. The redesigned bumpers are striking with their angular air inlets, their revised grilles and the flat front fog lights. The headlights have also changed, with a slight wave at the bottom edges, and a rearranged interior. Xenon plus headlights are available as optional equipment, but standard on the sportier S line model I tested. The taillights reflect the shape of the headlights, and have harmonized strips of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The bumper, with its diffuser insert, hints at the car’s athleticism, as does the exhaust system, with its twin tailpipes. What’s more, CO2 emissions are only 120g/km and an average of up to 61.4mpg can be teased from the tank. This means the Audi A4 is made for milemunching and so, along with its tasteful image, will serve any senior manager who ‘lives on the road’ very well indeed. AUDI A4 • • • • • • • •

he Duster is so basic that my wife took five minutes to figure out how to open the tailgate. She then remembered how cars used to work years ago – and she pressed the button you stick the key in – and voilà, the boot opened. That says a lot about what the Dacia brand is all about. It strips away all the frills we have become used to on our motors. The Duster certainly doesn’t cosset you or pretend it’s anything other than a crude four-wheel-drive Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). Step inside and you feel like you’re sitting in something from the late 80s. The Renault owned Romanian automaker obviously loves plastic. There’s so much of the stuff that the cabin reeks of it. The dashboard is just one big slab of synthetic material, with all the appeal of that long forgotten Tupperware box in the back of your mum’s cupboard. But the boot, once you’ve worked out how to get into it, is surprisingly square and spacious. As you might expect with all-wheel-drive, roadholding is impressive. You have the option to twist a dial in the cabin to turn four-wheel-drive on or off –so you have plenty of control over when you want to engage all four corners. I didn’t venture off the tarmac, but given the ride height of the Duster and the impressive grip in normal circumstances, I reckon this bit of Romanian rough will see you through a British winter or over a rutted field. The Dacia may come without any icing on the cake, but the Access model, on test here, is Britain’s most affordable new SUV. It starts at £8,995 for the two wheel drive model, and my 4x4 version will only set you back £10,995. • Ensure the price-tag includes delivery charges and number plates • Confirm any special features or extras you want are included in the cost.
If you’re part–exchanging, price your car sensibly:
• Get clued up about your car’s value, based on its age, condition and mileage • Concentrate on the ‘cost to change’ – if you negotiate a good reduction on a new vehicle, you’re unlikely to get a generous trade–in for your old motor • You should be able to get more for the car by selling privately but that can be time-consuming compared with the ease of driving to the dealer and motoring away in the new one. • Be wary of minimum trade–in promotions. They might look desirable, but may only be obtainable if you take the dealer’s finance package.
Negotiate:
• Many car dealers will have allowed for bartering in agreeing a price • Remember your budget though – don’t get carried away.
Agree collection or delivery:
• Don’t hand over cash until you’re satisfied with the collection or delivery arrangements • Try to plan the handover of the new car when the dealer’s not too busy. They can then put aside enough time to help get you acquainted with controls and any set-up required.
Familiarise yourself with the warranty conditions before you sign:
• You may need to fork-out for regular checks done to ensure the long-term anti-corrosion warranty remains valid • Automakers can’t insist that you get the car serviced by a franchise dealer during the warranty period but you must still get it serviced according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts. You’ll have to keep records so you can demonstrate servicing was undertaken properly • It’s worth bearing in mind that if anything goes wrong after the warranty expires, a manufacturer is more likely to show goodwill towards any claim if the car has been serviced by one of their dealers • Don’t be coerced into buying. The Shining Hope Foundation
M
arie Sant-Arnoult, Co-Founder of The Shining Hope Foundation, is gushing about ‘altruistic love’ and helping others for absolutely no return. This is exactly what you would expect from a woman who, along with her family, has devoted her efforts and finances to supporting community projects across India. The Shining Hope Foundation is a UK registered charity which helps supports a range of community aid projects throughout India. “It started three years ago. My family supported many different humanitarian projects for over ten years.” says Marie. They wanted to set up their own foundation in order to better focus the work they’d already started independently. Shining Hope is a grant making organisation which chooses projects across the world to fund which strive to safeguard local wildlife, natural resources and human populations. The projects must encompass the values of Shining Hope which are compassion, sustainability and transparency. The foundation chooses one project at a time, providing funds over a period of three years to ensure that the project gets the most out of the funding and maintains its sustainability. The foundation is doing fantastic work with existing local projects and ensuring they are getting the funding they deserve.
iPrayer Mat
A quick chat with the inventor of the iPrayer Mat
M
ade in Sheffield, the Islamic iPrayer Mat is a new gadget which teaches children how to perform prayers. This new and interactive product is a great way to introduce religion to children in a modern and interesting way. Asian Chic Lifestyle caught up with inventor, Munif Zia, to find out more.
How did you come up with the initial concept for the prayer mat? I am Director of Mathematics and Numeracy for a Secondary School in Sheffield. I came up with the concept in order to engage children and new Muslims to learn and perform Salah (prayers).
How does it work?
It works by having a touch screen electronic device integrated within a Turkish Prayer Rug. You select the prayer you would like to perform and then the contents of that particular prayer are recited and you listen, recite and perform the prayer.
What makes it unique?
It’s the world’s first electronics prayer learning device. All completely non-profit and manufactured in Sheffield.
Where can we get one?
All information on the Islamic iPrayer and purchasing one can be found on our website. www.islamiciprayer.com ChicAsianLifestyle | www.asianchic.co.uk | Issue18

British Break: London The capital of our country is renowned for being bustling, vibrant and culturally-rich. London, home to more than 8 million inhabitants, is a place which often gets overlooked when UK residents are choosing their holiday destinations. Filled with many hotels, attractions, bars and restaurants, London should be high on the places to visit this summer.
The Hoxton Shoreditch Hotel
W
ith the money you save from not having to book flights to go somewhere abroad, you can afford to splash on the finer things in life such as your accommodation. Pricing from as little as £59 on www.lastminute.com, the Hoxton offers innovative rooms inspired by the ‘urban experience’ that you would get from the surrounding area. Each room is designed to be a mixture of different cultures and styles but manages to flow coherently with furniture, art and lighting all sourced within a 3 minute walk from the hotel. It is a cheaper alternative to the Connaught but it is equally as luxurious and you won’t find a nicer place for the price. www.hoxtonhotels.com

With a bustling atmosphere and an eclectic mix of innovative cocktails, the vibrant bar justifies charging such steep prices. A few cocktails worth the money would be the Baby Bear, a mix of 42 below vodka, raspberries, watermelon and framboise (raspberry liqueur) syrup, the Green Tea Daiquiri, a combination of rum, green tea, lime juice and maple syrup, and the lychee mojito which is bound to be good. www.crazybeargroup.co.uk

Fortunately, London is bursting at the seams with these types of niche restaurants and one which is rated highly by the trusted site Trip Advisor (www.tripadvisor.co.uk) is Bar-shu, a Szechuan restaurant which is known for its fiery spiciness and lip-tingling flavours. With interior that is very classy and exquisitely presented food, this south western Chinese restaurant is definitely one to look out for if you’re in the Soho area of London. www.bar-shu.co.uk

Fusco Browne: For the good of the public If you’re in need of immigration advice you can trust in the Immigration Service with a heart. If you are attempting to migrate to the UK then chances are you have problems enough already. The last thing you need in this situation is more things to worr y about. Dealing with the tricky sides of immigration law is something of a nightmare. That is where an immigration expert comes in, to help relieve your stress. We spoke to Margaret, Immigration Expert, at Fusco Browne. In 1988 Margaret came from Zimbabwe to Lancaster where she attended Lancaster University and lived with her family for over twenty years. After graduating she was offered a position at the Racial Equality Council within immigration. Here she not only perfected her valuable skill set within immigration law, but also found a love of charity and helping people. “Once I’d worked in a charity it was really difficult to move away from that. You really put your heart into it.” explains
Margaret, who came to manage an office for the Immigration Advisor y Services in Sheffield shortly after her stint at the Racial Equality Council. It was after this, and with a wealth of experience, that Margaret decided to open her own business, so that she might share her knowledge with people who so desperately need it. Within her own business Margaret has incorporated her charitable background. She explains that Fusco Browne offer a free advice service be that face to face, over the phone or via email. This allows the people who need help to access it without having to worr y about the financial obligations. The charitable spirit with Fusco Browne runs deeper than mere free advice. Most recently Margaret has put together a team of legal volunteers who will help the most needly asylum seekers, who cannot afford to pay for legal aid, by offering pro bono legal aid. Margaret speaks with passion about this, glowing with excitement.
Fusco Browne will soon be expanding. Margaret is currently in the process of opening an office in Pakistan. “Our focus is on students and on work visas. We are working with a company that deals with student placements and we work with universities.” Finding an expert who you feel at ease with and able to confide will ensure that the entire immigration application process is as painless as possible. The company has a multitude of languages under their belt, including Urdu and Shona, meaning that they can communicate with clients who cannot speak English well. The experts at Fusco Browne will take you through the steps and give you a helping hand when it comes to legal advice, no matter how stressful your current situation may be.

Quitting The Habit Help Quitting Smoking
I
sn’t it time you quit? We all say (usually about eight times a day) that we’re going to quit, but when are we actually going to do it? Well, there really is no time like the present so let’s do it together. We look at some useful tips of breaking the habit!
N Shock Yourself Remind yourself of the effects of continuously smoking by looking at them every day. Find a fairly grotesque photo of an infected heart or lung and pin it up somewhere where you’ll see it all the time. That way you can’t pretend you don’t know why you’re quitting.
Tell People Now is the time to use peer pressure to your absolute advantage. Tell anyone and everyone that you’re quitting! This will mean that people are constantly asking you about how it’s going. This may sound like hell, but it should work in your favour and motivate you to stop.

Perk up: Coffee
cause cancer, in fact it can reduce the risk of oral, oesophageal and pharyngeal cancer.
C
However, to reap all these wonderful health benefits of coffee you must drink it regularly because the caffeine in coffee, which encourages these benefits, only stays in the body for a short period of time. But be careful, drinking too much coffee can lead to trouble sleeping at night, cause headaches and temporarily increases your heart rate so people who suffer heart problems should rethink their beverage choice. Drinking more than eight cups of coffee a day can cause the negative effects to overpower the positive.
The perfect perk or a dangerous drug? offee. Many of us don’t start the day without it and the media are always telling us what the latest reports say about drinking coffee. It prevents depression, causes cancer or makes you live longer, there’s a stream of health effects coffee apparently has on you and it’s hard to know what to believe. But the truth is the advantages of coffee outweigh the disadvantages. Drinking two to three cups of coffee a day can reduce your risk of diabetes, help fight Parkinson’s disease and helps break up gallstones. And despite some reports coffee does not
So keep the cafeteria full, a couple of cups a day can probably make you a healthier person.
Pole Dance Your Way Fit!
P
ole dancing is fast becoming the new exercise trend, billed as the best way to burn calories and tone muscles; Tabby Smith tells us why she’s a pole dancing convert.
The Perils Of Sugar
W
hat do Kellogg’s Special K, Innocent Smoothies and Apples have in common? They’re all healthy foods right? Wrong.
Whilst most of us may stock up on Kellogg’s Special K for breakfast and drink Innocent Smoothies and apples towards one of our 5 a day; the foods are actually sky high in sugars. But of course, the companies promoting them don’t tell you that. They focus on the health benefits of Kellogg’s Special K, even telling customers they can lose weight if they eat it twice a day. (I’m pretty sure you could lose weight eating any cereal twice a day). And sure, it does have only 0.5g of fat and 120 calories per serving, but what about the sugar content? There’s a whopping 5g in the Original Kellogg’s cereal alone and that’s before you add your own sugar on top. Also it turns out that Innocent Smoothies aren’t so innocent after all. Sure, they taste delicious (especially the kids ones which I drink – no bits!) and count towards one of your fruit and vegetables for the day, but each serving contains 10.9g of sugar. And it’s not just processed food that is hazardous. Apples contain high levels of fructose also known as fruit sugar. Whilst this is a natural form of sugar, it is still sugar none the less, and dieticians advise to
make your five a day contain more vegetables than fruit. Why is this? It’s simple really. Foods that are so low in fat and calories have to make up the taste value somewhere, and that’s where the sugars come in. A study carried out in 2012 by Dr Evropi Theodoratou, of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Molecular, found a strong correlation between diet that is high in sugar and bowel cancer. This doesn’t necessarily mean that just because your diet is high in sugar you will develop bowel cancer, but it does increase your chances. It’s not just adults who should be cautious. Another study conducted in 2011 by the University of Hertordshire collected data from seven of the major supermarkets in the country and compared food targeted at children and adults. They found that many ‘healthy’ foods promoted for children such as yoghurts and cereal bars actually have more sugar and fats in them than foods which are aimed at adults, but due to their clever marketing tactics many adults are unaware of this. So, next time you are in a supermarket and you spot a healthy cereal bar, or low fat yoghurt, check out the levels of sugars it contains, and prepare to be shocked.
What made you choose pole dancing?
One of my mates asked me if I wanted to go and I ended up really enjoying it. I just want to stick to it and get really good at it. It uses different muscles than at a gym; your stomach and arms and really gets your heart pumping.
Can you feel a difference in your fitness? Yeah, I definitely feel like I’m a lot stronger; I’m using muscles that I’d never used before.
Did you feel self conscious?
Yes, extremely nervous! But now I’ve been going once or twice a week since May and I’ve really started to pick up doing it and I can just go on my own now.
Do you think it will catch on as a mainstream fitness trend?
I think obviously people are a bit wary about it, but I’ve had some girls from work getting into it and when they went they said they really enjoyed it as well. Tabby does classes at Butterfly Studios. www.butterflyfitnessstudio.com ChicAsianLifestyle | www.asianchic.co.uk | Issue18

From small acorns do giant oak trees grow Kashmir Crown Bakeries (KCB) was founded in 1968 and is widely acknowledged as one of the first Asian bakeries in Europe. Since then the business has grown from strength to strength with millions in revenue. The company currently specialises in Asian sweets, biscuits, cakes and savoury snacks which are famed throughout the world. The man behind this phenomenal business is Mohammed Saleem, born in Bagh Sheri, Mirpur Azad Kashmir, in 1940. His father would have liked him to go to college but he knew that it was out of his reach. Instead he sat his Matriculation exams, and then got a job in a textile mill.
When he landed in the UK, he had a determination to make a success of his life. After working hard for five year he rented a shop on Leeds Road called Kashmir Food Store supplying fruit and vegetables. He then continued working nights at the mill, and during the day he worked in his shop. In 1970, Saleem bought a bakery in Carrington Street, Bradford, from Mr Whitehead. Saleem experimented making cake rusks, stumbling on the recipe for the best-selling, prizewinning, signature product, the Crown Cake Rusk. It is still made to that original secret recipe and distributed throughout the world.
In the new millennium, Saleem, whilst remaining Company Chairman, handed the running of the business over to the second generation. Expansion into Europe now became the keynote with distributors in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Spain. Though known globally, the aim now is to make KCB a leading global food manufacturer as famous as Nestle and Coca Cola. KCB’s Product Development Department aims to find new innovations that fulfil the next generation’s more westernised palette.

ChicAsianLifestyle | South India Meets Sheffield
South India Meets Sheffield
What happens when you take up in a different country with different values and a completely different culture? After spending a month in South India, Adam Pigott, investigates the fundamental differences in lifestyle and how we can embrace, not fear, that in our day to day life.
A
fter a wonderful month, I had left Madurai in the south of India with a heavy heart, such was the positive imprint the city had left on my spirit. So it was that less than two weeks after my return home I found myself basking in the warmth of my local South Indian restaurant, Arusuvai, on London Road. I spoke to newly appointed acting-manager at Arusuvai restaurant, Balaji, 29, originally from Coimbatore, just a few hours drive from Madurai in Tamil Nadu. I wanted to discover how his cross-cultural experiences compared with my own. The congenial interview was accompanied by a very welcome cup of genuine Indian Chai Tea. He explained that he had come to England five years ago to study to become a physiotherapist, and became involved in the management of Arusuvai only two weeks previously. “My wife’s passion was to start a business, and I love food and drink”, he explained. Without hesitation he exclaimed that the biggest culture shock he encountered on arriving in England was the food. ‘Wherever I go I get beef or pork, the things Hindu’s won’t eat. I prefer vegetarian and the options were very limited for me. I ended up with just mashed potatoes and wedges, which made me quite sick. That inspired
20
ChicAsianLifestyle | www.asianchic.co.uk | Issue18
me to learn to cook actually‘. He went on to say that the language barrier, dress codes and activities of English people were initially very strange to him too. I could understood this all too well, having experienced the same differences from the opposite perspective. Whilst in the conservative southern states of India I saw first hand the restrictions placed on young men and, particularly, young unmarried women. India is a land of contrasts, at its best replete with unexpected wonder, but at its worst muddled with hypocrisy. I learnt that while unmarried men and women are often barely allowed to speak to one another, or even sit next to each other on the bus, conversely, and controversially, in some instances it has been heard of for a young woman to be wedded to her uncle. This marriage would be arranged in order to protect the status and caste of the family, which Balaji confirmed for me is a highly significant aspect of Indian culture. Talk turns even closer to home next and with a slightly self-depreciating smile on his face Balaji is quick to identify his mother’s home cooked food as the main thing he misses. “Again, culturally it is very different, up until I came here I was barely apart from my parents. I miss pampering from
mum. Though, I think English people are more friendly than Indian people, generally.” I tell him straight that I disagree with this, but he goes on to elucidate; “Everyone here gives a social smile, in India I never get a social smile. But, family bonding is much more important in India than it is here. In England, at 12 or 13 the son is getting away from the family. One time I saw a father and son paying separately for their own bills, which was embarrassing for me’. This seemed to concur with my experience of living in the home of an Indian family, where there were no distinct bedrooms. The family slept together in the living room, and there was less emphasis on the self. He opened up further at this point; ’Every year I go back to India, and still, when I go home I sleep on my mother’s lap” Here in the West, in the pursuit of individuality and personal wealth, we have lost something fundamental to the human experience. Despite the apparent cultural disparities, the poverty and visible lack of infrastructure found in some areas of India, it seems there is arguably a lot to be learnt from a country that, on a social level, values the family unit over individual aspirations.

BritAsia TV Music Awards 2013 Fans from all over the world have been voting for their favourite British Asian Artists!
T
he wait is nearly over and as ever, 2013 has been a fabulous year for British Asian stars who have undoubtedly been showing Britain (and the world) what they are made of. To celebrate this, an eclectic and exciting mix of stars from the British Asian Music Scene attended the Brit Asia TV Music Awards 2013 Media Nominations Party set in the prestigious Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham which was the perfect setting for this glamorous event. Notable for its ambience, the BritAsia TV Music Awards 2013 nominations party involved an evening of mingling between stars and media. There were stars milling around every corner, celebrating each others success over the past 12 months.
The event did not disappoint and as expected there was a vibrant and buzzing atmosphere; the champagne flowed and Canapés were gratefully consumed courtesy of Mahirs catering. The decadence ensured this star-studded evening was one to be remembered as V.I.P guests all waited witj bated breath to hear the well known Sukhi Bart, BritAsia TV presenter to announce the nominees for the 15 categories. Nominations include up and coming artists such as Sama Blake and Raj Bains for Best newcomer, and DJ Friction for best DJ. There was immense competition between the artists and the tension could be felt rippling through the air whilst the nominees were announced as success is sought after throughout this ever growing industry.
One step closer and with just over a month to go, on Saturday 12th October at the NIA, Birmingham the BritAsia TV Music Awards 2013 are set to take Birmingham by storm with an incredible line up of dazzling performances from the Asian music industry featuring exclusive performances from both UK and international artists such as Diljit Dosanjh, Gippy Grewal, Dr Zeus and Jaz Dhami to name a few, hosted by British actor, comedian and writer Kulvinder Ghir. This momentous event will promise to be a night to remember (depending on how much champagne is consumed!) Let’s hope the awards show lives up to the precedent that has been set by the magnificent nominee’s party!

Music was not the only thing on offer; kids were kept well entertained by a fun fair and hundreds of stalls selling food and handicrafts from all over the world.
An attendee of the event, from Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine, said “Whilst the Mela could have provided a more communal and ethnically varied event, people flew in across from Europe to celebrate what was an action packed free event” with a total of nine different zones which included the main stage, the classical stage; the magic Mela family area, South Asian food market and a Sports area. Big stars such as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Harshdeep Kaur and A S Kang drew in massive crowds creating what was reportedly a “buzzing and energetic atmosphere across the whole event”. Audiences were invited to enjoy an exclusive mixture of international stars and UK premieres which make the festival an increasingly significant event in the capital’s summer of festivals, bringing together thousands of people to socialise and celebrate all areas of South Asian culture. As well as the main stage, there was a classical stage with highlights including a special performance

The London Mela entices a variety of Londoners out for a good time and this year Nasser Hussain challenged festival goers to attempt to out bowl him at the Skype Cricket pavilion. A popular element of the event was the beautiful twilight parade and firework finale accompanying a shadow movement performance of the exhilarating tale of love, jealousy, betrayal that is Rama and Sita completed the event, which “ended it on a calm and relaxing note”. In case that wasn’t enough, England cricket legend Nasser Hussain challenged festival-goers to compete in the Skype Superbowl Challenge and the amazing Kawa Circus displayed their impressive skills in the Magic Mela arena. “Jagten” (The Hunt) Directed By: Thomas Vinterberg
L
ucas (Mads Mikklesen) is recently divorced and trying his best to have a fresh start by getting involved in his work at nursery school and starting to date a new girl. But as soon as Christmas arrives, an unkind remark will turn into a considerable rumor which will get the community to conspire against Lucas, soon becoming a destructive lie with no way out. It’s the typical Scandinavian movie, with its light and image processing, its choice of sets with big wooden houses lost in giant forests and its characters’ psychology. Indeed, Thomas Vinterberg talks about Lucas character as “the modern Scandinavian men: warm hearted, friendly, helpful
and modest”. The interesting thing here is that neither the director or the actor is falling in the easy cliché trap. When classical witch hunt films centers around scenes like the gathered community screaming with hate. or the the suspect being interviewed by the police, The Hunt doesn’t get tricked and tackles the subject from a brand new point of view, the one of the defendant. By these means, we avoid everything that could have been boring in the script for the benefit of a true moral questioning. And that’s why Vinterberg’s film works: basing one’s argument on déjà vu to ask new questions. Every familiar ingredients are combined but it’s not a foregone conclusion. The real moral will spread slowly during the entire movie like a rumor in a village or snowflakes on the winter floor.
“Call Girl”
Directed By Michael Marcimain
S
tockholm in the seventies, its dark streets and fair haired girls. A postcard kind of city, where sexual politics comes up against minor prostitution. With this highly topical issue, which left its mark on the country, Michael Marcimain introduces us Iris (Sofia Karemyr), a young troubled girl who will have no qualms about selling her body with her associate Sonia (Josefin Asplund) in order to climb up the Swedish social ladder. During almost two hours and a half, the director seems to stretch the time on purpose. By setting the film in a dreary and colourless atmosphere, Michael Marcimain puts us in empathy with the two girls, jailed in a world they wish to escape.
“ Oslo 31 August” Directed By: Joachim Trier
I
t’s the last day of summer in Oslo. Anders (Anders Danielsen Lie) just got out of rehab and comes to spend a day in the city for a job interview. At the same time, he gets to see members of his family and old friends to make the most of it. In this documentary look-alike movie, Joachim Trier enrolls his central figure in a melancholic and vaporous Oslo. The film constantly lingers between Anders’ social environment and the city, with its light, its nature and its architecture. Thanks to the

given perception of the character, the film absorbs us into his thoughts. By setting up a metaphor of loneliness through the figure of a junkie, the director goes beyond the simple stereotype of the drug addict. Between sociological reflexion and impressionist painting, the film transports us on a twenty-four hour odyssey to get us interested in integrity, self questioning and to debate about life in general. We come out of the cinema changed and our mind full of questions as if we just had a long conversation in a cafe with a friend.
Moreover, it’s on a chromatic level that everything takes place in the movie. The pastel shades of youth club are continuously crashed into the garish colours of the city and the parties. After a full-immersion stay at the bottom of the social ladder, we gradually accede to glamour and power to then sink , just like the characters, in a dead end nightmare emphasized by a neurotic editing and Mattias Bärjed’s forceful soundtrack. Somewhere between arthouse film, ikea commercial and typical thriller, “Call Girl” gives a new facet of Sweden and of Scandinavian cinema at the same time.

hahid is a biographical hindi film which is based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi who was assassinated in Mumbai in 2010. Azmi and his family were terrorised during the Mumbai riots of 1993. Shahid was then accused of having terrorist links and was arrested and imprisoned under a draconian law before he became the fearless lawyer that he was known as. He was murdered whilst defending Fahim Ansari who was on trial accused of playing a part in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, but was later acquitted and has gone on to become an unlikely martyr. The film follows Azmi’s awe-inspiring journey as an impoverished citizen who became a symbol for human rights and an inspirational testament of the power of human spirit. Mehta was inspired to make the film when Shahid Azmi was accused of criminal activities after his death and he was not alive to tell his side of the story; Mehta took it in to his side to show the world the whole tale and stand up for Shahid and his beliefs.

ChicAsianLifestyle | Eid Al Adha
Your Perfect Eid Al-Adha How much do you know about The Feast of Sacrifice?
I
10
t is almost that time of year again, Eid Al-Adha; the Feast of Sacrifice. This is, of course, a holy time when we remember the ultimate sacrifice which Abraham chose to make. It is a reminder to have faith regardless of what is asked of us. It is also a family time, a time to celebrate and a chance to have a massive party. This is the bigger of the two Eids and, hence, the bigger of the two parties. With that in mind it is time to get planning!
Muslims all over the world will sacrifice an animal such as a sheep or a goat as a reminder of Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah (although in Britain this can only legally occur in a slaughterhouse) and share the meal out between family, friends and the poor. At Eid it is also obligatory to donate a certain amount of money to charity to help less fortunate people buy food and clothes so they too can celebrate the day.
clothing that they are required to wear throughout Eid which is a big part of the celebration.
Eid Al-Adha (or big Eid) is the latter of two religious festivals celebrated by Muslims around the world and it honours prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his first born son to Allah. For Muslims this event reminds them of how important it is that they themselves be willing to sacrifice anything at Allah’s command. It also marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.
2013’s celebration will take place on 15th October and on this day many Muslims will make a special effort to purchase new clothes or wear their finest outfits to attend the prayer service at their local Mosque. Muslims are encouraged to prepare themselves for the occasion of Eid by making wudu (ablution) and offering Salat-al-fair (the pre sunrise prayer) and preparing for personal cleanliness. This includes taking care of the beautiful yet modest
Whatever religion you are, the message of Eid Al-Adha is an important one and the generosity of those who are well off giving to people who are not as financially secure as they are is a very positive thing, especially considering the financial hardship many people are currently suffering.

These days, traditional designs, patterns, and styles are blended with modernity to create a stunning mix. As long as all designs follow the modesty guidelines there are no restrictions on what colours or fabrics can be used so it really is a colourful and extravagant event in the Islamic calendar.
One of the biggest Eid events of the year, Eid Masti 2013, has just been announced. Tickets on sale now.

D

Sheikh, of Malaysia, was the first Muslim to go to space during an Eid celebration, meaning he had to follow the Guidebook for Islamic Astronauts issued by the government which set out specific ways in which to carry out prayers in space. The 35 year old took traditional celebration food, such as spicy meat skewers, cookies and Malaysian satay, to space during his eleven day exhibition, which unfortunately clashed with the Islamic celebration.
