Welcome

Summer is well and truly underway, and what with the anticipation of the upcoming Tramlines, we’re more than fully immersed in summer in Sheffield. This issue, we’ve packed the pages with a host of treats ranging from the irresistible (Food and Drink) to the luxurious (hair review). We’ve chatted with the jolly comedian of Father Ted fame, Ardal O’Hanlon, who’s bring his Irish comedic charm to Sheffield this Autumn. Coronation Street ’s favourite hairdresser, Samia Ghadie, came to Meadowhall recently to launch their new competition and we grabbed a few words with her, plus we’ve chatted with the most hotly anticipated voice of this year, Lianne La Havas. Reporting back from the streets of Sheffield, this month we’ve reviewed Inspiration hair salon in Crosspool and Antibo restaurant in West One. Our pages are packed with ever ything from Living to Fashion so put down your 99 and get stuck in.

Carrie’s War

13th - 17th August 2013 Studio Theatre

S

eptember 1939 saw a war break out that came to engulf the world over. Imagine you are a child in 1939. You are being evacuated away from everything and everyone that you have ever loved to live in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. Many people experienced this plunge into the world of rural living, and the stories that have come out of this unique era of our history are endless and fascinating. This was evidenced by the publication of the 1973 novel Carrie’s War. A beloved tale, it has since been established into a lauded West End production, and now, we lucky people of the Steel City have the chance to experience it for ourselves!

Coming to the Studio Theatre between Tuesday 13th August and Saturday 17th August is the touring production of Carrie’s War, the fascinating tale of Carrie Willow and her brother Nick, wartime evacuees who leave the familiarity of urban life behind to jump, head first, into a life in the countryside. Their time there changes everything. Starring Brigit Forsyth (Thelma in ‘Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads) and Hannah Waterman (Laura Beale in ‘Eastenders’) this talented roster is sure to bring Emma Reeves adaptation of this much beloved book to life. An equal mix of rip roaring comedy and high drama, a trip to see Carrie’s War promises to have you glued to your seats from start to finish. www.sbr.org.co.uk

from Friday to Sunday. The University of Sheffield and Tramlines Festival team up to bring you The International Stage and a unique Street Arts Festival. The International Stage will be live over the festival weekend with demonstrations from the university’s international groups and, of course, a variety of live music from across the globe. ritten by the Sheffield born, award winning Matthew Bugg, this musical is an entertaining, dazzling, alluring story filled with fantastic songs that are sure to get your feet moving. Stylistically sexy and smart, the musical tells the story of two men struggling in war torn London to get a cabaret starlet in to the glittering starlight of fame. The story manages to create emotion and tension which will leave the audience wanting more. If that’s not enough reason to go and see ‘Miss Nightingale’, the musical stars the internationally known Amber Topaz; a talented bombshell enough to blow anyone away. So get out those corsets, pour yourself a gin and get your dancing shoes down to the Lyceum Theatre this July. www.missnightingale.co.uk Phone: (0114) 249 6000

Interview with

Ardal O’Hanlon

H

aving risen to fame on TV within his much loved role of Father Dougal Maguire in Channel 4’s Father Ted, and then as the superhero, Thermoman, in BBC’s My Hero, Ardal O’Hannon’s Irish charm has made his comedic skills some of the most sought after on the circuit. Ardal’s real love lies within stand up, however, having toured to sell out audiences internationally, releasing two top ten DVDs. His skills also stretch to various TV roles, theatrical film appearances, theatre acting and novel writing – his debut novel, The Talk of the Town, remained on the Best Seller charts for more than six months, recently voted as One of the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die. Ardal has now returned to his true love, with his latest stand up tour stopping at Sheffield City Hall on 10th October 2013. We caught up with the former superhero to talk about his comedy roots, what he’s got planned for his show and exactly where his comedy gold comes from. You’re touring the UK throughout September and October – how long have you been planning to tour and what are you most looking forward to? I toured last in 2010 so this tour has been in the planning for about the last three years and in the meantime, I was busy writing and trying to get out and going to festivals and going to clubs at night… just making sure that everything was working. I’ll do Edinburgh for ten days before I go on tour and then I’ll go on the road after that, so should be in good shape by the autumn. You’re coming to Sheffield on 10th October – what can we expect from the show? I suppose it’s where I’m at in my life, you know, it’s kind of like a state of the nation address but it’s really about the state of my mind, I suppose, so it’s just kind of observational stuff it’s about life, about

all the frustrations that you experience during the day. I touch on the bigger stuff, there’s a little strand of social commentary. I touch on politics, religion, relationships and all that kind of stuff but a lot of it’s kind of quite petty. I’m quite a petty person, to be honest with you, so it’s just all about the little annoying things and some of the bigger annoying things. You’ve played a variety of roles in shows from Father Ted to My Hero. What’s been your favourite part? I suppose I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t Father Ted. I mean, Father Ted was sort of the first big role I ever got and I was an ordinary standard comedian at the time; I really didn’t expect to ever have a career in television at the time. I suppose I owe so much to that part and it was such a joyful part as well, I enjoyed every minute of that really. I suppose I loved doing My Hero as well for different reasons, it was more the company that I kept during that show, we had a great cast and team and that was really enjoyable as well. Then little cameos and Doctor Who and stuff which were really good fun, but the Father Dougal character was great. Do you prefer to do comedy acting rather than more serious parts? Well I’m in a very serious play at the moment so it’s very hard to plan your own career, certainly for me anyway. I don’t think too far ahead, I wouldn’t know how to go about it, so you go from one thing to the next so I think you go where you get asked to go. In a way you can’t control these things yourself. I love the challenge of doing most of these roles, but when people know you as a comedy actor they think of you only in those terms, so for the last few years I have been doing plays because you get more opportunities to do more serious stuff there. I’m

doing this play in London at the moment called The Weir and I play a very awkward, sort of hard drinking bachelor, and that’s been a really great experience. You’ve developed a range of skills from acting to writing to voiceovers. What do you prefer? I think it always goes back to stand up for me, like stand up is where I started out and it’s what I always return to. I always think the other stuff is kind of like a bonus, the TV stuff - that’s like the cream on the cake. You don’t expect it; when it comes along it’s great, but the stand up is the bread and butter, it’s the vocation, it’s the addiction, it’s real life for me. It’s what life’s all about, trying to make sense of things, and the way I do that is through stand up, through jokes. So it’s what I love the most and what I always return to. How did you get into stand up to start with? I don’t know really. I was a quiet kid but I suppose it was just friends, you start making each other laugh and stuff and one thing leads to another. I just remember I did a kind of very ordinary arts degree in a very home-grown university in Dublin, and I remember we spent most of our time just putting on little shows just trying to be funny. We left there and we just had this notion of setting up a comedy club, and we did, above a pub just a year after we left. We just stayed there and we just did comedy, putting on comedy shows every week and never really expected much to come of it. So I just drifted into it really, it’s just something to do! What do you have planned for the future? Nothing really. You know there’s always a few things on the go, like different projects and people asking you to do different things, but you never really know. I mean, I do want to do more theatre, I really loved doing theatre over the last two years and compared to stand up it’s very sociable and working with a bunch of people and not dwelling on your own stuff all the time; it is different. But I really genuinely find it very hard to see more than a couple of months ahead, I really don’t know!

Interview With

S

amia Ghadie, a British actress known for playing Maria Connor on ITV’s Coronation Street and appearing on the 2013 season of Dancing on Ice, came to Sheffield to launch a new competition at Meadowhall Shopping Centre. We got the wonderful opportunity of talking to her about everything from Corrie to ice skates and to her daughter.

Ice. I’m not taking anything away from how hard Strictly is but ice skating, for me, was the scariest thing ever. I couldn’t even stand up in October so now that I’ve done that, I’m happy!

What would make your year? I think the first part of this year made it for me, competing in Dancing on Ice, because it was something that I never thought I would do, or that I would be able to do. I kind of faced a lot of fears and challenged myself, but a nice holiday now would probably make my year.

Who’s your favourite person on Corrie? Oh gosh, I couldn’t pick a favourite. In regards to who I’ve worked with, I’ve been really lucky but the one constant who I always work with is Sue Nicholls, who plays Audrey. She’s like a second mum to me.

How did you find Dancing on Ice? It was brilliant but it was easily the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I made some amazing friends that I know I’ll always see and so it was amazing. Now you’ve done one dancing competition, would you ever do Strictly Come Dancing? I don’t know really. I don’t know if Strictly would be as much of a challenge now I’ve done Dancing on

14

SamiaGhadie

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

Obviously you met your boyfriend on the show as well, how are things? Very good thank you!

What are your plans for the rest of the year? Just back at Corrie now, back to normality with being a mum, or as normal as my life gets. Do you think your daughter will follow in your footsteps and go into soaps? She is a bit of an actress; the tears can come like that. I wish my tears came as easy when I had to do a crying scene. I’m not going to actively encourage her to do acting, but if she really wants to do it I

won’t stop her. It’s quite a tough business to be in, really. Do you want any more children? Never say never!

How do you balance being a mother and a working woman? Really well, I think, because I’ve got a really good support network at home. My mum is always there for me and Freya’s dad’s always around. She’s at school two days a week now and obviously I’m not in work every day so I actually spend tonnes of time with her, so I’m quite lucky really. Your character is a hairdresser in Coronation Street and you change your hair quite a bit yourself. Do you go for regular hair appointments? My friend comes round to the house to do my hair so it’s not so much a treat, because I’ve got the dog round my feet and Freya making cups of tea every two minutes and curlers in her hair, so it’s not really a relaxing experience having my hair done!

Helsinki is one of the world’s coolest capitals. With its modern architecture, elegant cafés and classy cocktails, it achieves its slick status without even trying. It’s almost like the city that plays hard to get. When tourists visit, the first question is always the same: where are all the Finns? During the winter months, the Finnish can be found curled up inside or café crawling to get away from temperatures that can drop as low as -15°C. In summer, they tend to flock elsewhere for a break. If you’re after some sun, June is the best time to go with temperatures reaching 20C+. Finnish people are generally friendly, if not a little reserved. English is widely spoken and many Finns will happily change to English if you ask. They somehow manage to be very cool and very friendly in equal measure. Here’s everything you need to know for your city break to Helsinki.

Flights

Restaurants

Finnair www.finnair.com You can travel from London Heathrow to Helsinki Vantaa from £320 return on Finnair. The trip takes around three hours but you’ll receive a hot or cold deli meal on the flight. A shuttle bus can take you in to the city centre from there.

Solna www.solna.fi Solna aims to give customers a range of taste experiences which are out of the ordinary, like liver with pear and rye bread. Perhaps a spot of reindeer and barley for lunch? Solna is tucked in a side road just off one of Helsinki’s busy streets. The atmosphere is calming with cream tones and decorations of candles and soft wood furnishings.

Hotels Sokos Hotel Tapiola Garden, Espoo www.sokoshotels.fi Treat yourself to a lavish stay at Sokos Hotel, located near the WeeGee museum cluster of Helsinki. The recently refurbished hotel in the heart of the garden suburb of Tapiola hosts a gym, public and private saunas and a swimming pool to give guests the chance to relax after an action-packed day. Their Spanish-style Sevilla restaurant is a real treat, too. Sokos is very central; only five miles away from the bus and railway station. Prices start at €84/£72 a night for a double room. Scanda Grand Marina www.scandichotels.com Gran Marina Hotel has beautiful views of the seafront along with a host of other perks. The hotel is a refurbished warehouse building which provides an ideal spot to explore the city. Many of Helsinki’s bars and restaurants are within walking distance of Grand Marina. After all that walking, chill out on the summer terrace for more views of the harbour. A standard twin room comes in at €141/ £120 per night.

Demo www.restaurantdemo.fi Welcome to Demo, the first bistro-style restaurant in Finland to receive a Michelin star. The story involves two friends who started a restaurant in 2003 to bring the fun and laughter back in to dining. Despite holding a Michelin star since 2007, the friends’ goal remains the same: to serve downto-earth food. They have four different menus which vary in price to suit everybody’s needs. And in case you were wondering, they encourage you to leave your tie at home.

Bars A21 Cocktail Lounge www.a21.fi For a real taste of Finnish culture, head to A21. Awarded the title of the world’s best bar, the lounge offers all manner of cocktails - classics, newies and a surprising number of concoctions hailing from the 19th century. A21 also serves up ‘Finland in a Glass’ with many locally inspired tipples. The entrance is somewhat hidden and you have to ring a doorbell to get in, but once you get inside, it’ll be worth it.

Club Liberte www.clublberte.fi Club Liberte plays live music six nights a week including their house band and guests on Sunday nights at Naulaamo Klubi. Get ready for some amazing versions of old and new hits. Plus, they have a big screen that shows all the major sports events and a pool table to boot. Result!

Attractions Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma www.kiasma.fi Kiasma is the place to go to explore all that is unusual in the international art world. The museum holds a series of exhibitions, workshops and theatre showings. It also provides an escort service, but it’s not what you might think (get your mind out of the gutter!) Customers can hire a professional performing artist to attend a Kiasma theatre production with them. The price includes a discount on your ticket and a cup of coffee with your escort to have an in-depth discussion about the theatrical performance afterwards. Kotiharjun Sauna www.kotiharjunsauna.fi If Finland’s famous for anything, it’s for the sauna (or as they pronounce it, “saoo-na”). Kotiharjun is the last genuinely wood-heated sauna in Helsinki, with scrubbing ladies available upon request. It has been running since 1928 and offers separate male and female saunas along with other treatments such as massages. What’s more, you can put beverages on the chiller while you bask the heat, and then have your cold drink as you walk down the street afterwards. It’s all very Finnish.

ChicLifestyle | Evita Review

Evita at the Lyceum

A

s the ultimate Evita fan, I was more than a little sceptical when I crossed the threshold of the Lyceum Theatre for the latest touring production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. It’s therefore a testament to the true talent of these consummate professionals that once the final curtain had fallen, I was one of the most enthusiastic in my applause. From the minute the show began, it was clear that the major, as well as minor players of this latest production were looking to inject a new lease of life into what has become a standard of the musical theatre cannon in recent decades. The highlight of this production was by far Madalena Alberto in the title role of Eva Peron. Admittedly, I had a few doubts about her ability to pull off such a diverse role when she first appeared onstage (‘Eva Beware of the City’), however once the small town girl left Junín and hit the Big Apple (‘Buenos Aires’), Alberto’s ability to portray the patron saint of ambition shone as she powered through the high energy dance number.

18

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

From there the only way was up, as Alberto ran the gamut from ambitious to fanatical (‘A New Argentina’) to frail (‘You Must Love Me) with frightening ease. By the time Eva began her descent into the grave, we were hooked as Alberto literally broke down on stage. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Of an array of musical numbers, the actress impressed most with the musicals signature tune, ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’. A number which has come to define the show, it is notoriously hard to pull off the emotive honesty needed to bring it to life. Alberto, standing on an impressive representation of the balcony of the Casa Rosada, laid her soul bare and did this iconic number true justice. Although the rest of the cast matched her, this musical is supposed to centre on Evita, if she doesn’t shine, it all falls flat. This production saw Alberto take this role and redefine it for a modern audience.

C

hristopher Nolan worked wonders with the Batman franchise with his Dark Knight trilogy. Here he takes a backseat as producer and co-writer to Zach Snyder, director of 300 (2006) and Watchmen (2009) to direct this Superman reboot starring Brit Henry Cavill as the titular Man Of Steel. Nolan’s flair for exploring character depth shows, but Snyder’s attitude towards gloss and sheer action

makes for an odd stylistic mesh. The performances are great, with Henry Cavill feeling born to don the red cape and Amy Adams proving a surprisingly convincing Lois Lane. The film follows in the similar comic book derived style of Richard Donner’s 1978 film, Superman but shows the clear differences in graphic styles between the two generations. Whilst the film shows promise, the plot never reaches the full potential that a Nolan-involved Superman reboot would seem to suggest.

rad Pitt stars in this adaptation of Max Brooks’ zombie novel of the same name. Here, Pitt plays a former UN employee who must travel the world looking for a potential cure of a zombie epidemic or he and his family will be denied sanctuary. Given that zombie films are often lowbudget affairs, World War Z provides a rare largescale representation of a zombie apocalypse. This provides for both interesting ideas and locales but sucking out some of the more intimate human qualities of Dawn Of The Dead (1978) or 28 Days Later (2002). Despite the somewhat strange mismatch for a Hollywood A-lister such as Brad Pitt being in such a film, he provides a decent and engaging performance; amidst that it seems rather far-fetched and extreme even for such an apocalyptic sub-genre. World War Z is ultimately nothing special, but for all its strengths and flaws it is fairly unique.

magic-themed mystery, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrellson, Isla Fisher and Dave Franco play the Four Horsemen: four magicians who pull off Robin Hood-styled magic tricks taking money from businesses and banks. Mark Ruffalo and Mélanie Laurent play two agents out to catch them. From the start, Now You See Me intends to bamboozle its audience and provides sharp twists and turns through a convoluted plot

that will probably reward repeated viewings. Yet the film is something of a display of style over substance; the camera whizzes and zooms whilst the CGI visuals often overpower, undoing some of the promising subtlety that could come from such an ambitious concept. This even seeps through to the point where the actors are held very much in the background (especially poor Dave Franco). It’s not a total wash-out but a film of this kind could’ve been a lot more intelligent and intriguing than this ends up being.

W

ith the second film now opening in wide release, it’s time to take a look back at Despicable Me as it’s granted a re-release on DVD and Blu-Ray. Colourful, comical and sweet, Despicable Me tells the story of Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) as he tries to steal the moon, aided by three little girls. The film was produced for the 3D gimmick and it plays a little too much to that angle. However, the film really pulls through in its story that pulls in its strength of being charming and amusing, aided by a strong lead performance by Carell. ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

The Smoky Voice of Lianne La Havas

F

rom her beginnings in South London to sharing a stage with the likes of Prince, Lianne La Havas has come a long way. The 23 year old songstress has, of late, been catapulted dramatically into the limelight, playing a host of festivals and performing music greats. This month graced Tramlines main stage. We caught up with the star to find out how she’s handling her new found fame and what we can expect of her this summer. It must be hard to keep your feet firmly on the ground whilst you have the world’s critics and music fans globally bowing down at them, but Lianne has as yet managed to strike a balance between being a global superstar and just being.

But how does Lianne cope with the inevitable pressures of taking to the stage and charming a crowd with that smoky voice of hers?

“It’s gradually earned and learned I think. You have to always get used to what it feels like to perform. It’s quite strange sharing something that comes from within you, your music and singing, it’s a very strange thing to perform to a large number of people but once you embrace it and enjoy it, that’s

“It’s difficult as you can imagine. I’m very lucky to have the people around me that I do. The best way is to make sure you have people that you trust. My whole band, we’re great mates, we can tell each other the truth, how you feel and that’s a comfort. Equally with my crew, even the sound-guy, we’re really great friends, we hang out. Having people around you love, and who trust and love you is the key. It doesn’t always happen, I’m very lucky, because that’s the key to surviving life on tour.” And it’s not just the critics and the fans that are showering the young singer with attention; her fellow artists and music legends alike all want a piece of her. Most recently Bon Iver invited Lianne as their support artist on their US tour, whilst Prince himself covered her song “Lost and Found” live and then invited her to jam with him in Minneapolis. For such a young and new artist sharing stage space with legends such as Prince takes guts. Thankfully, Lianne has some. Her confidence in herself and her ability as an artist is clear and completely founded.

20

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

With the music world swamped by endless prepackaged and manufactured artists vying for attention in an already saturated market it truly takes something different to break through. Lianne has just that, though. It is through her artistic integrity and will to do things on her own terms that she has carved a name for herself.

“I bring the idea and the integrity as it’s from my heart and soul. I went into this knowing that whoever was working with me would see that point of view; that the buck stops with me. The record labels are there to facilitate and help you. If you’re an artist who has some sense of the direction you want to go, the label is there to nudge you in the right direction. So I think you should always maintain that if you are an artist and you are pursuing that career, you are a creative driving force. People believe in you, so I stay true to myself and make sure I’m the boss.” This summer, Lianne will be taking that fighting spirit on tour playing some of the biggest festivals around the country and she couldn’t be better suited to it. “I’ll be honest, I love festivals in all shapes and sizes and the people you find at them are lovely”, gushes Lianne.

when you go from being a singer to an entertainer. Over the years, I’ve started to enjoy it more and more and feel it’s my chosen path, you know. That’s how I learnt to embrace it, which helps my confidence a lot because I used to be really shy with my singing.”

“I’d say that I sing about my real life, if anyone’s interested! My songs go through a range of emotions – very happy, light hearted to deeper, sorrowful ones that I hope will move the audience as well. For me it’s all about giving my personality in my music. Hopefully the audience member will go away feeling they know me a bit better through the stories I have to tell.”

T

he Whisky Files are back again with expert Chris Bamford, who has once again taken us on rather an alcoholic trip across the UK.

First we’re off to the South Welsh valleys to a village called Penderyn where we find the only Welsh distillery for over a century. Penderyn Distillery was set up shortly after the millennium and bottled their first whisky in 2004.

here’s much more to Showroom than merely the cinema screens. Whilst waiting to watch some subtitled French flick you may want to take a seat in the bar and café area, where you can grab a bite to eat, some classy booze or even just simply a cup of fresh coffee. Here at Chic we went down to the place itself to find out what it has to offer.

In keeping with the cinema, the bar and café caters to a sophisticated audience and this certainly comes across in their menu. Options included Honey Roast Baby Pumpkin and Butter Bean and Root Vegetable Crumble; both of which sounded delicious. Unfortunately we were not there to eat this time, no; we were there to have coffee. The setting for this was ideal, though we almost had to fight Tekken style to get a place on one of the comfy looking sofas. Once seated and more than comfortable we were completely prepared to order

T

I opted for a latte, the classic, whilst my friend went for a black Americano. The coffee was, as was expected, well made and they obviously know what they’re doing in that department. Coffee aside, the place was fairly quiet which was unexpected and the atmosphere was calm, which meant we could talk in peace. The serving staff were friendly and I would definitely recommend visiting this place. It may not be the most lively café in the world, but if you need somewhere a little more serene to talk, this is the place for you!

The quirky menu (presented on a mahogany board backed with fun faux cow hide) offers a range of cuts and even comprises a bovine diagram showing the less steak-savvy among us where each cut comes from and how it is best prepared. Richard Smith, owner and restaurateur, said: “We’ve always focused on quality at Artisan. We decided to re-launch this aspect of the menu to make it really special. “I liaised with our head chef, Ian Robley, who has ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

ext we’re taking a trip North of the North to one of the most famous Scottish distilleries, Glenlivit. This was one of the first well known single malts. It is the only distillery which is allowed by law to call itself “The Glenlivit”. This is because when it first became popular other distilleries attempted to cash in on the name by going by it themselves.

Steak – the Artisan choice

some hot java and talk about all of our deep and meaningful thoughts.

Interesting the Penderyn is distilled at an incredibly strong 92% ABV to begin with, before it is aged and watered down to a rather more acceptable (and less lethal) 46% ABV. Through aging whiskies generally become weaker. This particular whiskey is aged in bourbon casks and then in Madeira casks which give the whisky a fruity finish. The whisky is sweet smelling and smooth to drink. This is a non-chill filtered and non-coloured whiskey. Why not try it for yourself at just £3.20?

worked with me for nearly two decades. The menu makes steak really accessible to our diners and helps to cut through the jargon so they can choose something they like.”

Artisan has also launched new a la carte and dessert menus, titled ‘Neighbourhood’ and ‘Classic’ offering a range of dishes and prices to suit every budget. Culinary highlights including ox cheek & short rib bourguignon, classic fish dishes and a tasting of pork. Fancy giving it a try on a budget? The Neighbourhood menu is priced at £6-£12-£6 for starters, mains and desserts respectively, or on a £5£10-£5 Early Bird offer from Tuesday to Saturday. The particular whisky we’re looking at now is Glenlivit Nadurra. Nadurra, meaning “natural” in Gaelic, hints at the whisky’s natural colour. This one is aged in bourbon casks for 16 years, this gives the whisky a very sweet taste. The whisky had vanilla scents which are also caused by the bourbon cask. At £3.20 a single and 55.5% ABV, this is certainly one worth trying.

astly we have another Scottish delight. This time from the Ila Distllery, one of the hardest distilleries to actually reach in the country. If you manage to get there, though, it’s worth it since they produce the oh-so-strong Caol Ila. This, the strongest whisky in Shakespeares’ rather large collection, is a whisky which is aged for 12 years in bourbon casks. Whilst you may expect it to be peaty, this one is not. At 64% this one will really put some hairs on your chest (and arms and head) and at £4.30 a single that’s got to be cheaper than a wig! ChicLifestyle | Fry Masters Restaurant Review

FoodReview

FryMaster

That was exactly what we were expecting when a friend of ours told us that there was a chip shop on Attercliffe Road with ‘The Best’ fish and chips in town. Expecting only the best, we went down to Fry Master Fish & Chip Restaurant to see if this bold declaration was true.

in a butty. I chose the Cod Meal whilst my friend opted for the Sausage Meal, both of which included a generous portion of chunky chips as well as our choice of sides (mushy peas and beans were our preferences). Eating the food, all we could think was that this is what fish and chips are supposed to be; light and crispy as opposed to greasy and soggy. The crispyaround-the-outside-and-soft-in-the-middle chips were exactly what we wanted, with the telltale sign of being homemade. I received a filling portion of flaky and perfectly cooked cod with chips on the side and it lived up to the expectation that I had of the restaurant whereas my friend had the battered and fried sausage meal which, in her words, was “delicious and light, perfect for a lunchtime meal”.

Walking into the restaurant (which also offers a takeaway service), we knew that it was easy to mess up the British classic of fish and chips. However, we were welcomed into the restaurant with a waft of salt & vinegar, frying chips and were greeted by the smiling staff. After sitting at a booth in the restaurant, our gleeful waitress promptly took our order and returned with our drinks as well as buttered bread, should we choose to eat our chips

One thing that stood out for us, apart from the great food, was the impeccable service in which the waitress was accommodating to our needs. The cool décor and lively atmosphere made the restaurant more inviting and I would go as far as to say that Fry Master Restaurant provided us with one of the best plates of fish and chips that we’ve had in a long time. The family run restaurant has existed in many various incarnations since the 1950’s, when it began

The best fish and chip shop in Sheffield, possibly in the UK” is quite a staggering claim from a Trip Advisor commenter. Most of the time when people rave about something being ‘the best’, it is a clear over-exaggeration and the hype doesn’t live up to the reality. When these words are said it’s usually only a matter of time before people investigate the issue and realise that the reality doesn’t quite live up to the high expectation.

ChicInterior This season it’s all about Fifty Shades of Green!

Are you seeing green? You should be, as this month’s home and décor style bible is all about olive, teal and emerald. Setting such striking colours against a backdrop of muted, toned down colour assumes an understated style. It’s time to grow up and decorate your home to suit your character; sophisticated.

Living Room

Bathroom

Dunelm Mill Bathroom Sets, £9.99

The living room sets the tone for the rest of the house. It is the room where you will probably spend most of your time. The thing to remember is that a focal point (one key piece) will give the eyes something to primarily focus on when you enter the room. This could be in the form of a mirror, fireplace, clock or even a large piece of furniture such as a sofa. This piece can then be used as the colour palette to set the tone for the rest of the room; using a richer colour such as a grape purple means that the upholstery can see you into autumn as well.

www.dunelm-mill.com

Kitchen The kitchen is the ideal place to experiment with colour. Keep the shades in the bright and fresh bracket, since this will serve to revitalise the space rather than ultimately make it feel more claustrophobic. Stick to limes and bright greens, but all in moderation! A splash of fresh green will look great in the form of the Bodum Bistro Bender from Selfridges. The piece is not only functional and a great addition to any modern kitchen, but it is also bang on this season’s trend by way of colour.

Dining Room The dining area of your house is where you entertain, eat and socialise. Thus, the dining room is the most important room in the house. Keeping in with the green theme, you may wish to pick some key items which will accentuate the room’s features and create an atmosphere akin to fine dining eateries. We love these elegant Clarendon emerald champagne flutes from Selfridges, which scream style and sophistication.

Bedroom Ah the bedroom; your haven away from the daily stresses of life. Close your eyes and picture yourself in a wide fresh meadow. Breathe in and take in the sweet scents of nature. Are you calm yet? Create you’re very own safe haven with the beautiful Spring Meadow Sweet Bedset from M&S. If you can’t go to the meadow, let it come to you.

Bathroom Much like the kitchen, if you’re going to experiment with green in the bathroom area, you have to keep to fresh and bright shades. Avoid dark greens or olives and instead feature bright lime accessories which will freshen up and revitalise the look of your bathroom. A key tip when decorating your bathroom, regardless of size, is to always bear in mind two words: clean and fresh. The Lime Brights Bathroom Collection from Dunelm Mill incorporates this idea perfectly.

They accept a variety of items such as beds, suites, book tables, carpets and tables. The Single Girl Tries Online Dating

I

took my first few steps back into the dating world this month by joining the free online matchmaking website Plenty of Fish (POF). It claims to be the world’s largest dating website, with over two million people using POF every day. It didn’t take me too long to create my profile and fill in my details. However, it took a little while longer to decide on a suitable profile picture that said I was friendly-but-not-desperate. The next morning I checked my account to find 15 new messages in my inbox. I’d achieved more date invitations in 12 hours than I had in 12 months! Looking through the emails I’d been sent, I soon realised the guys on this site were not messing around. They were direct. They got straight to the point, with one keen bean messaging me simply saying: “Date tonight, Brazilian restaurant in town?” No polite how are you, no trying to get to know me, just diving straight in with the killer question. The thing is I didn’t seem to mind; in fact it was quite flattering. Even the messages from those who had two teeth and abbreviated every word were all rather nice about it. Browsing around the website I became quite hooked, excuse the fishing pun. It began to feel as though I was online shopping, but instead of looking for an outfit I was searching for a date. Soon a cute guy messaged me and after a few polite back-and-forth emails, we decided to take it to the next level and add each other on Facebook. We got on quite well and so arranged to meet in a few days’ time at a pizza restaurant. Immediately the butterflies attacked and my nerves kicked in; I actually had a date. But just what was I supposed to do now? What was I meant to wear? What was I meant to say?

W

omen wanting more privacy whilst being indulged and pampered at Creator Hair on West Street need no longer want. The innovative salon has now started taking bookings for a women’s only section where women who require an extra level of privacy may have their hair styled in a specifically allocated area.

Ultimately though date-day arrived and to help keep my calm I ran through a list of topics I had planned to talk about; a pre-date must. However what I hadn’t got round to planning was how we were going to greet each other. He went in with a hug. I went in with a formal handshake. As you can imagine, things got a bit awkward from there on. Luckily we managed to laugh it off and the rest of date went, actually, surprisingly well. There were a few hideous stretches of silence as both of us desperately tried to think of another question to ask each other. But overall, he was a regular guy who since finishing university had found it hard to meet girls back home.

“We have seen a steady increase in the amount of Asian women who request private areas where there are no men, as whilst they wear scarfs when in public, they still want great hair. We have several stylists who can do both keratin straightening and Brazilian blow drying.” said Mark Pearson, Creator Hair’s Creative Director and Owner. “We also offer a full range of other services and the clients only need to mention when booking an appointment that they require this service. I believe we are the first salon to offer this service and again this shows our desire to be the leaders in hairdressing.” he continued. If you wish to book an appointment in the new women’s only section then do not hesitate to call.

BohoBeauty The festival season is upon us, and although setting up a tent in a muddy puddle might not be your thing, it doesn’t mean you can’t channel the carefree festival spirit. Think mermaid waved hair, glowing cheeks and stunning summer goddess makeup; this look is perfect for any summer event and will set you apart from the rest of the crowd. Colourful eyeshadows blended perfectly, lightly bronzed flawless skin and kissable matte lips are stunning, eye catching and the epitome of summer sun-kissed beauty.

Expert Tips Chloe Sanchez

C

hloe Sanchez, a local makeup artist that knows what it takes to look your best, talked to us about some beauty dilemmas that we just had to have the answers to. Here is what she says are the most important things to remember when applying your own make up. What is your secret for flawless looking skin? Flawless looking skin starts from the inside, so drink lots of water and exercise regularly. Exfoliate bi-weekly and cleanse, tone and moisturise daily. Apply a primer before everything as this will allow the foundation to go on smoothly and will keep your make up in place all day. Then dot some tinted moisturiser on your face and blend with a stippling brush. It is important that your base is blended properly to give a natural finish and if you require a lot of coverage, buy a foundation that is buildable as this will allow you to apply product to just the areas that need it. Lastly, use powder to set the base.

Eye Catching Peepers

Your eyes are the main point of attraction for this look, so work with what God gave you to their maximum impact. Try muted pastels to add some colour without being too 80s secretary. Use a colour palette like the Benefit World Famous Neutrals Kit and smudge with your fingertips to soften the edges of colour into each other. Benefit World Famous Neutrals Kit, £23.50

Summer Toned Skin

To accentuate this look your skin needs to have a healthy glow; imagine you’ve just walked off a Spanish beach. Foundation covered skin become greasy, making you feel uncomfortable. A quick and easy solution to this is Clinque’s Face Bronzing Gel Tint - oil free, fragrance free and can be worn on its own or mixed it with foundation for light or heavier coverage. Clinique Face Bronzing Gel Tint, £17.50

Mermaid Waves

Perfectly circular and hairspray hardened tonged curls don’t portray a sense of natural beauty. A relaxed head of mermaid-esque waves does, however. The secret is in a surf spray, like Bumble

& Bumble’s Surf Spray. Spritz onto towel dried hair, leave to dry or use a diffuser and say hello to sexy, salty waves. Bumble & Bumble, Surf Spray, £20.50

Blushed Cheeks

A subtly blushing beauty is what you’re after with this look. After using the Clinque Face Bronzing Gel tint your face will already have the glow it needs. A simple brush of a light brown blusher is all that is needed, a sweep to bring out your cheekbones. Opt for a glowing peach or dusky bronze, like the Bronze or Nectar Shimmer Brick from Bobbi Brown, adding a touch of glimmer. Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick, £32

Kissable Lips

With the light summer nights and the soft colours of this look, a brighter lip would be a perfect focal point to the face. Chanel’s iconic Rouge Allure Velvet offers a range of cute shades in a velvety soft, deep coloured, luminous matte finish. Their peach and pink options add a warm and cute pop of colour. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet, £25

What’s the trick to having eye makeup that lasts? As with your foundation, primer is key to helping makeup last all day. Eyelids tend to get oily and that’s what causes makeup to smudge. One thing to remember is that cream products need to be set with powder products. How would you apply bright lipstick to give maximum impact? I would apply a lip moisturiser to a cotton bud and rub it across the lips. The aim is to buff off any dry skin and at the same time, work the moisturiser into the lips. You can then use a lip liner in the same colour as your lipstick to line and colour the entirety of the lips as this will give the lipstick something to stick to. Then use a lip brush to apply the lipstick and work in the colour. Blot your lips and re-apply using either the brush or applying directly from the bullet. What are your most important tips for our readers, when applying make up? Use a natural light in which to apply all make up and remember that less is usually more. Apply foundation first as you might not need as much product as you think. But mostly I would say be confident, feel free to experiment and find what you feel most comfortable with. IndulgenceBeautySalon Ahead of me lay a few hours of pampering with nail treatment and massage. I was first greeted by Lucy, Indulgence’s nail specialist, who is skilled in treatments including Shellac and Bio Sculpture Gel. She took a look at my nails – I’d had acrylic extensions which had grown out, leaving some battered acrylic on the ends of my nails. Lucy decided to remove the remaining product then apply new extensions as I missed the length. Using warm acetone liquid to soak off the acrylic, she filed and buffed my nails ready for the reapplication, and softened and trimmed the cuticles. She then glued on the plastic tips and trimmed to a length I was happy with. After filing the tips into a perfect, oval stiletto shape, she applied the acrylic, dipping a brush into the liquid then powder to create a gel. Once dry, she filed and buffed each nail to create smooth and level nails. For the polish, it was hard choice between the dozens of OPI colours stocked by the salon. After deliberating between an intense red and dusky pink, I went for the nude colour for a more summery feel. After a clear base coat, two coats of pink, a clear top coat and a spritz of quick dry spray, my nails were complete and looked fabulous. Next up was the massage. Therapist Holly took me into one of their four treatment rooms, and after removing the top half of my clothes, I lay down on the incredibly comfortable couch. Treated to a back, neck and shoulder massage, Holly used a Clarins lotion to soothe my stresses and strains away, massaging and kneading any knots until I felt calm and unwound.

idden up Abbeydale Road lies a haven of beautification and relaxation. Having opened in December 2012, the salon is beautifully decorated. Glittering chandeliers hang from high ceilings, flower adorned walls add a spot of rosy colour to the clean white interior and the mezzanine nail bar adds something different to the usual salon set up. Having recently been taken over by therapists Carli and Lucy, changes and new treatments are planned for Indulgence so I popped down to take a look. The salon offers a range of beauty treatments including facials, body treatments, waxing, threading, eye treatments, nails, manicures and pedicures, Fake Bake tanning, make up applications and lessons and semi-permanent make up. Indulgence also offers a selection of specialist treatments, including dermal fillers, teeth whitening, hair extensions, Power Plate, Caci nonsurgical treatments and VPL hair removal. Men are also welcome with a range of treatments to choose from especially tailored towards their

needs, plus there’s a selection of pampering packages available, with different offers up for grabs throughout the year. With bikini season well underway, there’s never been a better time to tone up and get your body beach ready. Helping you on the way to body beautiful is Indulgence’s latest addition: Lipo Reshape. Having stormed to success in Leeds, product specialist Lauryn Middleton is bringing the miracle alternative to invasive surgery to Sheffield, exclusively available at Indulgence. The process uses non-invasive ultrasonic liposuction technology to target specific areas safely and pain-free.

Throughout my visit all the staff were welcoming and friendly, and the beautifully decorated and spacious salon is the perfect place for a spot of wellearned pampering. Each therapist is at the top of her game. Offering a range of specialist treatments sets Indulgence apart from the crowd. Ultrasonic waves are delivered deep into the fat cells under the skin, melted away and then moved to the nearest lymph node to pass out of the body naturally. The treatment can also be used to tone and tighten the skin, reduce cellulite and stretch marks and even target fine lines. With results visible after just one treatment, a series of three to six treatments is recommended. ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

S

heffield is full of hair salons, some good and some bad, but at times the choice can feel suffocating. There is definitely such a thing as too much choice and weeding out the good from the bad is no walk in the park. We tried to do just that, find a good hair salon where you know your hair is in the trustworthy hands of a team of professionals. This month, we took a trip to Inspiration Hair Salon, situated in Crosspool. Upon entering what is a modern salon with wooden furnishings, I was greeted by the welcoming staff and Tracy Varey, my coiffeur of the day, who led me to my seat for a brief consultation on how I wanted my hair done. I simply asked for a trim, in the hopes that my hair will be long and luscious for the summer months, and told Tracy that she has full reign of what she wants to do in terms of styling, as long as it looks beautiful, and sure enough, she did not disappoint. I received what the salon call a “Shampoo, Cut and

36

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

Finish”, where Tracy used the well-known Wella shampoo and conditioner from the Enrich range, to cleanse my hair. After a therapeutic wash of my long black hair, the scissors came out as Tracy trimmed the entirety of my hair (including a trim of the layers), as well as creating a slight side fringe whilst shaping it to frame my face. In the industry, this is known as a forward graduation. With the cut in place, it was time to move on to the styling; the Finish part of the hair experience. Judging by what Tracy did, it seems as though less is definitely more as she rubbed a bit of Paul Mitchell Curl’s Best Friend into the palm of her hands and ran it through my hair for heat protection and to add texture to my hair. She proceeded to blow dry my hair with a roller brush to create voluminous curls before using the Curls Best Friend again to create movement and add more curly definition. Finally, she sprayed a touch of Wella Performance Hairspray to make my hair stay in place and my transformation was complete. I was more than

happy with my glamorous look and would highly recommend it. Inspiration Hair Salon 18 Sandygate Road Sheffield S10 5NH 0114 266 3996 www.inspirationhairsalon.com

oolside glamour should be effortless for men; a shirt and pair of shorts and you’re good to go. However, it ’s not as simple as that anymore. Things just got complicated. You need to decide on a pair of shorts that you’ll wear on the beach or in the pool, as well as choosing a shirt/t-shirt/polo shirt that perfectly matches the shorts. Aside from this, it ’s even harder to pack something that you can easily put on to dress up a simple pair of white trousers. If you’re going on holiday this summer you’ll need a suitcase full of diverse items that can be used to make a range of outfits.

We spoke to owner Max Wadsworth about his inspirations in life and what is up and coming for Ideology. Have you always wanted to run your own clothing store? Well, Ideology opened in 2008 so before that it wasn’t something I thought of doing. It was something that got more thrust upon me! Your Tumblr page is an obvious look on to your inspirations and passions but could you name one particular music artist and film which has inspired you? n the summer heat, whether you’re by the beach in Sicily enjoying your favourite cocktail in one of the top restaurants in Singapore, you deserve to look as beautiful as possible. There’s simply no point in going all that way not to look like a goddess. That is why we’ve found some of the best and classiest items of clothing to truly update your summer wardrobe and make it go from drab to fab. It ’s easy to put a swimsuit on but the hard part is putting something on over it, for pre/postbeach or poolside bar. Covering up needn’t mean hiding away, instead strut your stuff and wear your wraps with pride. These four pieces will suit any kind of beachwear and you can go from day to night with a cover up dress or even a pareo (wrap around skirt). Looking great has never been as easy as this laid-back summer style!

ith the reports that the British summer has been and gone in the flash of sunshine we saw earlier this month, it looks like we are going to have to reinvent our summer wardrobe and bring in some rainy day fashion favourites. The rules are pretty simple, stick to the bright and floral colours that are all the rage at the moment but add in this sophisticated Zara double-breasted beige raincoat at £49.99 and a cute flower necklace, £29.99 at Zara, which will bring in your own ray of sunshine through the dull grey clouds which seem to be having a hold over the whole of the UK. Other favourites which go perfect with the staple skinny jeans are heeled ankle boots; we love these Elova Round Toed Boots from Ted Baker, £75, perfect for the summer right through to autumn. Seeing as denim shorts will be kept for the sunny shores of warmer countries for the UK holiday makers or the daring individuals wearing them rain or shine, you can get your denim summer fix by adding in one of the many denim jackets that the high street has to offer at the moment. Mango has a great range, and we love this cropped stylish piece £29.99 which ticks all the boxes in this season’s summer must haves. A final way to brighten up these dull days is with statement jewellery, adding the extra wow factor to the everyday outfit. From chandelier earrings to sparkly necklaces you can find these at nearly every shop on the high street.

GrandPrix

F

or the second time, the Steel City will play host to the Claremont Gran Prix. The Claremont Gran Prix is the final round of the British Cycling Elite Circuit Series, which will also include the British Cycling Womens National Road Race Series. This means only one thing; dust off your bike, pull on those racing gloves, strap on a helmet and let’s get peddling. Here at Chic we’ve got some great tips to get you started. Ready. Set. Go! Prep We hope we don’t need to tell you this, but just in case we do: you need to prep. There is simply no way that you can go into race like this one without preparation. That means training in the weeks leading up to the race itself. Get fighting fit, eat well, sleep well and, most importantly, train well. First Impressions Don’t Count The start of the race is arguably the least important part of the race. This is where everyone goes wild, attempts to assert their authority by peddling their behinds off and intimidating fellow cyclists. You can expect breakaways and attacks whilst racers attempt to establish a solid position. Don’t get involved in this; the first twenty minutes do not define the race and you could end up draining your body’s batteries too soon. Steady pacing is key, your chance to really compete will come but you have to wait. Get Your Positioning Right Whilst going in for the attack or attempting to start at the very front of the race is a stupid move too early on, it is still important to be somewhere in the front. Being in the top third of cyclists is all that counts during the first proportion of the race. You will have your chance to move forward later on and so all you need to do right now is keep position and don’t lose it. Attack and Attack Hard When your time to move forward comes, and it will, you need to be forceful about it. Wait until you’re close enough to take the risk (about ten paces behind) and go in strong and fast. If you attempt to do this from any further back you run the risk of wearing yourself out.

42

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue53

Don’t Waste Energy You can’t go around trying to move up in position and trying to breakaway throughout the entirety of the race. Instead try to conserve energy by taking the pace at a steady flow. You have to plan ahead in order to ensure that you are able to sustain positioning! That means not being overzealous and waiting for the opportune moment to move upwards. Conserving energy means that when you come to the end of the race, the kill, you will be fully charged to go in for it. Don’t try to move forward all of the time, instead wait for a lull.

Sportsmanship is Key As with any sporting event, being a good sportsman is key. Your fellow cyclists are exactly that so keep that in mind. When you are in the race you are obviously thinking about how best to win places. However, it is also important to treat the other cyclists with respect. Enjoy! Never forget why you’re doing this. Taking the sport seriously is obviously important but don’t forget to enjoy the experience!

re you bored of doing the same type of exercise, week after week? Even if it’s something you enjoy doing such as swimming or playing tennis, it’s always good to try something new. That is where Pilates comes in, an exercise system that stretches and strengthens the whole body to improve balance, muscle strength, flexibility and posture. With so many people now jumping on the bandwagon and doing Pilates, we’re more than

happy to have a huge array of classes around Sheffield. A class which is recommended by many is located on 348 Cemetery Road, established in 2001 by Jeni Ferguson. There are so many benefits to carrying out Pilates such as strengthening the core of your body, improving posture and gaining flexibility, whilst also alleviating stress and tension.

Why not give it a go today, with the help of experts at Jeni Ferguson Pilates? For more information, visit the website at: www.sheffieldpilates.co.uk

What does your new health regime consist of? Mostly just eating better and cutting portion sizes down. When I go out for meals, I used to get big portions and feel so full. Now, I make sure I order off the children’s menu because it’s cheaper and it’s a smaller portion. I’ve always snacked but now I snack on fruit. I have a box of fruit on my table in the office so if I’m hungry, I’ll eat grapes rather than reaching for crisps. I’m trying to walk more and do more exercise but I never seem to have the time. I finish work and then I just want to relax, whereas I should be motivated to go to the gym, so Shaine [a work colleague] and I are joining the gym across the road next month. When did you start? I started properly, I’d say, about two weeks ago. I’ve had a couple of ups and downs because I love chocolate; it’s like my favourite thing in the world and to try and cut that down is a big deal. There are Special K Bars which contain chocolate now and they’re only 90 calories! What is your goal? To lose two stones by this time next year, for two reasons: 1. I’m going to Cyprus with my family and I want to feel comfortable and 2. I’m going to be the maid of honour for my best friend’s wedding. It’s a pretty progressive change which is good. Oh yeah, I don’t think crash diets work because you’ll lose the weight that you want to lose, sure. But then you’ll start eating normally and you’ll put it back on again, whereas I’m trying to make a lifestyle change.

SuperFoods: DarkChocolate

T

here are some things which just don’t sound appetising when you’re trying to lose weight, and the doctors always say that you need to eat things such as olives and spinach and drink soya milk. However, scientists have now discovered that one of our favourite foods, dark chocolate, is packed with antioxidants to combat cell damage and prevent premature aging. Another benefit of eating dark chocolate, (the same benefits cannot be achieved by eating milk or white chocolate) is that it helps to increase blood flow to the brain and releases endorphins to boost your mood. Dark chocolate isn’t just beneficial to those that need a pick-me-up. It regulates blood sugar and also contains high amounts of copper, magnesium

and iron to protect your body against stroke, cardiovascular disease, anaemia and even high blood pressure. Although it is good for your health, you should opt for a cocoa content of at least 70% to get the most amount of antioxidants and don’t exceed 50g a day.

You still indulge, right? Of course. I love chocolate! I’m a big fan of ice cream as well. I’ve found an alternative to that though, which is frozen yoghurt. Flurt on Pinstone Street in Sheffield is amazing! It’s frozen yoghurt in lots of different flavours and it’s completely fat free. They have a buffet of toppings like granola, raisins, strawberries and kiwi. It’s healthy and really nice. You mentioned some pills that you’ve been taking to help weight loss. What are they and what do they do? Well, one is called the Natural Cleanse, which cleans your insides. It gets rid of all the toxins and helps to avoid parasites. The other one helps to speed up your metabolism in a way. I can feel them working and you take two in the morning and two before your evening meal. Have you noticed any changes? From these tablets, I’ve felt like I’ve got more energy. I used to wake up and didn’t want to get out of bed but after having a tablet, it’s like I’ve drunk a can of red bull. I feel slight changes but I’ve said to myself that I’m not going to weigh myself until I can feel a difference.

summer’s day of golf for the Mercury Taxi drivers was not your average staff day out. Instead the guys were raising money for an extremely worthy cause, The Children’s Hospital Charity in Sheffield. The day saw 150 golfers take part in the day-long event at Dore & Totley Golf Club.

t’s the Griffin-badged company’s answer to the Nissan Juke or the Skoda Yeti, and power to the small Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) is provided by three efficient engines, all equipped with fuel saving Start/Stop technology. The petrol version comprises a 1.6-litre engine or a 1.4-litre Turbo and there is a 1.7-litre CDTI diesel. I drove the 113bhp 1.6 petrol Mokka; it has moderate pulling power, but, working your way through the five speed gearbox, it eventually spins up to a decent speed. It also provides a smooth and grippy ride. Looks-wise the Mokka is beefy and incorporates Vauxhall’s signature ‘blade’ on the body side, sweeping towards the rear. Its muscular disposition is reinforced by its higher ground clearance and 18” alloy wheels. But what I really liked about the Mokka is its cleverness. Inside, the vehicle displays archetypal Vauxhall values such as versatility and userfriendly functionality, providing up to 1,372-litres of load space and 19 storage locations. The Mokka also offers the latest generation Flex-Fix bicycle carrier. The user-friendly case is fully integrated in the rear underbody, functioning like a drawer and accommodating up to three bikes at a time. Brilliant, if you’re into two-wheeled outdoor family fun.

39

ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue16

The SUV is available in front-wheel and all-wheeldrive. The 4x4 system wasn’t fitted to my demo, but if I was in the market for a Mokka I’d definitely want it. As you’d expect, the extra technology ensures a high level of stability and traction, extending the car’s capabilities to more rugged environments. It’s always worth having for extra safety reasons alone. Standard features that enhanced the driving experience for me included Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control (TC), as well as Hill Start Assist (HAS). Other progressive upmarket gadgetry the Mokka brings to the table includes Advanced Adaptive Forward Lighting. This increases driving safety and includes High Beam Assist. The lights cut a way through the dark like a laser - they really are that good. The Vauxhall Mokka range is available, priced, as my test model was, from a very reasonable £15,995 - and it’s far more handsome than its unsightly rival, the Nissan Juke.

‘In The Rings with Ali’ Exhibition

ChicAsianLifestyle | Exhibition

T

his year Muhammad Ali, The Greatest, turned 70. The iconic athlete’s wide spanning and successful career is a topic of great interest. Last month, Bradford’s Midland Hotel played host to an exhibit detailing the life and career of the man himself. Photographer and brainchild of ‘In the Rings with Ali’, Christina Jansen, writes:

Cooper managed to knock him down. He said to me, with a twinkle in his eye, it was because he took his eye off Cooper for a moment because he glimpsed Elizabeth Taylor sitting in the audience.

“In 2012 Ali, the greatest athlete in the world, was returning once more to the greatest sporting event, the Olympics. My photos had sat in a drawer for 20 years, but with these two things coming together I realised it was time to revive them.

“Meeting Ali and having the opportunity to get to know him was simply inspiring. He was a wonderful flirt and entertainer. I was very touched when he wrote a special poem to me on the back of a contact sheet. He wrote, ‘Love is the net our hearts are caught in like fish’, and he drew a big heart around it and a smiley face at the bottom. He knew how to flatter a lady.

“We premiered ‘In the Rings with Ali’ in London at the Foreman’s Smokehouse Gallery which overlooks the Olympic Stadium, during the games themselves. Lance Foreman told me it was his favourite ever exhibition that he’d hosted. With the help of Cause UK, a Yorkshire fundraising and marketing agency that works with charities, we were determined to bring it to the north of England. Bradford was just an inspired fit.

“What I’m hoping this exhibition gives is an allround sense of the man, the many different sides of ‘The Greatest’, not just the boxing success. I hope it gets people inspired to go out and do good, to believe in their own convictions and to stand by them. I’m also hoping it will do some good for our charity in Bradford, QEDUK, which works to break down the socio-economic barriers ethnic minorities face.

“I was very fortunate to meet Ali himself and spend two weeks with him after I was asked to take stills for a commercial while he was being filmed. On my first day I was very nervous about meeting ‘The Greatest’, but he put me at immediate ease.

I raised money for the London show for an outreach programme with boxer Oliver Wilson – the ‘In the Rings with Ali the Ultimate Contender’ programme. It helps disaffected youth in the inner city, using boxing clubs to help them use their energy in a positive way and learn discipline and respect in a safe environment. I believe boxing clubs can play a vital and much needed role for young people who are lost or feeling hopeless. Sadly, despite a wonderful start, I haven’t raised enough sponsorship to continue that work and bring Oliver Wilson and his team to Bradford, but we’ll have boxers and coaches from the Bradford Police and College Boxing Academy at the launch.

“We had many conversations and he told me his philosophies of life, which inspired me to do this show. He said to me, ‘If you reach for the moon you might end up next door, but if you reach for the stars you might get to the moon’. It was that sense of courage, to have belief in yourself, to go that little bit further. “While on set with Muhammad he would entertain the children being filmed by performing magic tricks, making hankies disappear from nowhere. He showed a childlike, wicked sense of humour that both children and adults responded to. “A lovely story he told me was about how Henry

“This exhibition really is a special journey through the life of Muhammad Ali. It’s very much a celebration of his message of love and kindness and tolerance that a lot of people seem to have lost. That and his spirit of never giving up; he said, ‘He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish

nothing in life’, which seems especially relevant in these difficult times we live in.” To find out more about the charity QED-UK visit www.qed-uk.org and to learn more about Bradford’s fascinating exhibit visit www.in-the-rings-with-ali.com

Photo by Ken Regan How I would Like to be Remembered By Muhammad Ali

I would like to be remembered as a man who won the heavyweight title three times, who was humourous, and who treated everyone right. As a man who never looked down on those who looked up at him and who helped as many people he could. As a man who stood up for his beliefs no matter what. As a man who tried to unite all mankind through his faith and love. And if all that’s too much, then I guess I’d settle for being remembered only as a great boxer who became a leader and a champion of his people. And I wouldn’t even mind if folks forgot how pretty I was.

Cafeccino Sit back and enjoy all flavours of shisha...

T

he richly decorated Cafeccino feels warm and inviting on the summer’s day we choose to visit. Luckily, we are in the midst of a UK heat-wave, so the café windows completely open out onto the decking. Inside, the décor screams North Africa, with pieces from Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt which hints at the heritage of the Co-owners who have recently taken over the space. Rugs and art hang from the walls whilst a wooden African sculpture watches us from its perch on a shelf above. I don’t think we’re in Sheffield anymore, no; we must have taken a wrong turn and ended up on foreign sands. The café has recently reopened under the new management of Bacem Ben Aboud and his business partner, who have completely transformed the space into the quirky and interesting one that it is today. The place itself serves two main functions; firstly it is a café where you can choose from a wide array of hot and cold drinks. I can vouch that the coffee is made to perfection for coffee lovers; strong and rich. This is the ideal place to enjoy a coffee, tea or even non-alcoholic cocktail, but there is more to this little café than purely drinks. Outside are tables where you can enjoy an altogether different experience: shisha. For just £6 you can sit out in the summer’s sun and smoke

shisha, which ranges in flavours from pineapple to strawberry to peach. Over the years shisha has become ever more popular and is a rather sociable activity that can be enjoyed in groups. Co-owner, Bacem, explains to us his service ethic for his new business. “I make sure that every customer who comes in, leaves happy.” After working as an engineer he moved into the hospitality sector where he worked in hotels and restaurants for seven years. That wealth of experience is something he is hoping to take forward into his business. “I think it’s time,” he says, smiling, when we ask him, why now? It’s clear that this is something he’s wanted for some time. The guys have more plans in store for the café. Next on their agenda is food. Creating an authentic North African menu is something Cafeccino are passionate about and the plan is to start serving food as the next step. The café is currently open 8am until 4am, so pop down at your leisure! Cafeccino 07429 433 334 47 Wicker Sheffield S3 8HT

Butler’sBaltiHouse

A

t the door of Butlers Balti House we are greeted by a huge grin on the face of Rajesh Sharma, the restaurant’s manager. Having worked in the food industry, in various guises, for nearly 20 years, he knows what he’s doing and from the start to the end of our meal he attends to our every need. “We want a satisfied customer. That’s the main thing”, he tells us, as we’re seated and handed the menus. Before our meal we whet our appetites with a poppadum, fresh pickle and sauce tray. We were warned, when the tray was brought over, that the green chilli pickle was hot. This lead us both to take a dip of it immediately, only to have to follow it up with a huge gulp of water. That was our first indicator that Butlers meant business; traditional Indian food; hot, traditional Indian food. We began our meals with an array of starters to try; Paneer Tikka, Stuffed Mushrooms, Tandoori Fish and Chicken Tawa. Each was made fresh and to our specification. The Paneer Tikka consisted of a traditional Indian cheese marinated for eight hours before being stewed. In particular I found this extremely filling and moreish, with a soft

27

ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue16

warm texture. The Stuffed Mushrooms were filled with generous amounts of minced spiced lamb and cheese. The Tandoori Fish was cod, cooked in Indian sweet spices and flaked beautifully when cut. Our favourite, though, had to be the Chicken Tawa, which is not actually on the menu but is so frequently asked for that the chefs have introduced it regardless. The chicken is minced ad well cooked in medium spices. This is not something either of us had tried before, but is definitely something we will be trying again. After our starters Rajesh invited us into the kitchen to see our mains being prepared fresh, where we met the chef, Mr Latif; a cheerful guy who has been working in the trade for 15 years. He explained to us that everything was made fresh on site and so customers can ask for dishes to be cooked to suit their tastes. We then watched our naan and roti being made in front of us and cooked in a tandoor oven. Having fully explored the kitchen we were seated again and our food was served. I opted for the Asian home cooked style (which generally means

spicier and dryer) Chicken Punjabi, which boasted warm and appetising heat. My friend opted for the Balti Baruchi Lamb. He proclaimed it was the best cooked lamb he’d ever tasted, and was cooked with chilies and potatoes and topped with red onions. The onions provided an unexpected sweetness to the dish which accompanied the lamb well. We also each tried a main portion of Chicken Tawa, which differed from the starter as it was hotter and also included chilies, potatoes, tomato and egg. Each meal was delicious and well cooked and we will definitely be returning for seconds very soon. Butlers Balti House will soon be expanding into a two floor restaurant that has a fully stocked bar, which is open until late at weekends. It is the ideal venue for any celebration! Viraaj, a restaurant thats décor is as well dressed as its sharp waiters and waitresses, tries to please its customers by providing a wide range of options in how they can dine. Having opened in October 2010, the fully licensed and air conditioned restaurant brings emphasis to the fact that it uses fresh herbs and spices to create flavours which are authentically Indian. The restaurant wants its customers to know that, as well as offering an a la carte (off the menu) option, customers can have a night in and take their food to the comfort of their own homes. As well as this guests can enjoy their regular buffet evenings and can even hire them to cater for parties. The

Viraaj

restaurant has private dining areas for large groups and it offers halal and vegetarian options. Some of the unique food items that they serve are Chicken Monipuri, Bengal Chingri Sizzler and Vegetable Achari, whilst the full menu highlights the exotic nature of the dishes. With Indian food being so popular in this day and age it’s hard to stand out from the crowd but Viraaj is going back to basics and hopes to provide ‘quality, quick and efficient service’. his dance group, led by Nisha Lall, features a mixture of technique, body conditioning, choreography and creative tasks. Another type of class that Nisha teaches throughout the month is a tribal fusion lesson in which you have the ability to learn the steps to belly dancing and elements of hip hop, Indian dance, flamenco and contemporary dance are included.
