The Season Of Festivals Bastille

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue54

ChicLifestyle | Interview with Bastille

The Season of Festivals: Bastille Jenny Entwistle interviews Dan Smith

S

ummer is nearly over but the country is still truly in the midst of festival season. Bastille, the pseudonym of singer-songwriter Dan Smith which also doubles as the full band’s stage name when three more members join him for live performances, have been busy bees. Having already graced the stages of Glastonbury back in June, and Leeds and Reading in August, the band are set to play Sheffield this October. Dan Smith talks about the fests, and his love for David Lynch. Have you got any advice for someone going to their first festival this year? Really boring practical stuff! Bring the baby wipes? Yes! The baby wipes, bin liners to sit down on if it’s muddy… lots and lots of alcohol! Carryable alcohol, so go for the spirits!! I don’t know… all the usual stuff.

Now it may be hard to believe but this time last year you were playing venues such as Southampton Joiners and Birmingham’s Rainbow. You recently put on a headline tour for Autumn which includes two nights at London’s Brixton Academy which sold out in a few hours. How does it feel that so many people want to come and see you live? (Jokingly) I don’t know what’s wrong with everyone. It’s very weird, very surreal. Like I said before, we’re very happily busy at the moment to the point where some of the slightly unbelievable things have happened can be appreciated but we don’t really think about them too much. There doesn’t seem to be a huge point in dwelling on stuff. We’re so excited about the tour, we’ve worked really really hard on the live side of things over the last couple

Any festival anecdotes from past times that you’ve been? Probably! Off the top of my head, as a band we’ve had some quite weird experiences, Kyle getting smuggled into Glastonbury was one… we were playing, but his ticket didn’t arrive so he had to get smuggled in inside a sofa – I don’t know how much we should promote that one though as we do want to continue playing Glastonbury! What happens at a festival stays at a festival? Yeah a little bit! The things you get up to with your mates aren’t necessarily that interesting to anyone else. If you could create your ultimate festival what acts would be on the line up? Oooh… good question! My taste is quite broad, and I’m often just into the new music that I’m listening to. I don’t know I think… are we talking like old bands or… dead people. Any, it’s up to you! I think it would be nice to have Simon & Garfunkel back, reunite the Fugees, Jay Z, Vampire Weekend, Blur, Frank Ocean would be great, James Blake… have him along! The Weeknd would be good, Laura Marling, I like her, a lot. It’s difficult to pick off the top of my head from everyone ever...loads of people!

of years – we’ve gigged and toured quite relentlessly and so it’s quite gratifying to feel it grow. In my mind I thought maybe playing somewhere like Shepherd’s Bush Empire would be the pinnacle of everything we did for this album, so to play two nights at Shepherds Bush Empire, and then to go on and play two Brixton’s is just way beyond anything that we ever expected. We played Brixton Academy with Two Door Cinema Club in February and at the time we were like ‘This is so huge!’ and if we ever get to play here it’ll be in five years’ time. It’s so exciting for us, and we’re just really keen to put on a good show. We’re trying to think of ways to incorporate visuals and just keep the show exciting and evolving so that people who have seen us

before get something different out of it if they come again to another tour. We’re in an incredibly lucky position getting to do what we love for our job and little challenges like trying to put on a better show aren’t bad ones to have. The fact that the shows sold out so quickly is… totally insane. As a self-confessed ‘New Music Geek’, any UK artists you’ve loving at the moment? They’re not from the UK but I love Haim. AlunaGeorge are awesome. Josh Record has a great sound. There’s a singer called Jay Brown who has a brilliant new EP coming out soon. There’s also a guy called Rag ‘n Bone who has this incredible, incredible bluesy voice. I hope he does really well over the next couple of years. To Kill A King, I’m a massive fan of them, they’re brilliant and I think they’re working on new stuff at the moment, which is exciting. Laura Palmer has been quite integral to the band - it was the title track to your first EP and the character from Twin Peaks has been quite an influence. Can you tell us a bit about the track for those who may not know the history behind the character? I’m obsessed with a film director called David Lynch, and he, back in the 90s, did this TV show called Twin Peaks. Laura Palmer was the main character, but the series starts with her having been murdered. She’s positioned as this idealized, perfect character but as the series, and investigation progresses, her secrets and the hidden parts of her life are unpicked. David Lynch is very good at presenting everyday situations and making them quite weird and surreal and Twin Peaks is a lot darker than people might think. It was way before my time but I found it on DVD and watched the whole show, it just really grabbed me. It’s funny and very strange, and as an idea I think it was such interesting way to present a character, to have her kind of unraveled after she has died. It sounds really morbid, but it’s so iconic. Not really for our generation, but she’s just a very iconic popular culture figure. I wrote the song while I’d been watching loads of the show, and Laura Palmer seemed to embody the idea in my mind of running away from problems. The song is basically a massive nod to the character and to Lynch.

FUNERAL for a FRIEND

uneral For A Friend, the band behind the massive 2003 sensation, ‘Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation’, an album which later went gold, are this year back with a new album, a new drummer and a newly full tour date diary. The band recently announced the forthcoming release of their sixth studio album, “Conduit”. The album, in-keeping with their previous style of posthardcore music, features the former Rise to Remain drummer Pat Lundy replacing long time drummer and vocalist Ryan Richards who departed earlier this year. We spoke to new member and drummer Pat about everything from the album release, to joining the band, to the band’s recent performance at this year’s Leeds and Reading Festival. “I’m third generation, I suppose. I knew the guys because I supported them in my old band, so I guess we’d done a few tours together. I went to Europe for the first time with a band called Bullet For My Valentine. So I was lucky to get to know them on a personal level and so when they went to replace Ryan I was like heck yeah I’ll try out. Maybe on a personal level I had the upper hand.” he explains. “Conduit” is the band’s latest musical offering and something which Pat is extremely proud to have worked on. “It’s short and sweet. It’s probably the angriest record the band’s done so far. Saying that, everyone needs an angry record. It’s a positive…” Pat pauses for a moment and continues “…and also a negative record.” It is clear that he is coming to terms with the new style of music the band has been experimenting with. Pat has recently joined the band on a UK tour of epic proportions. This is the first real feat for him

14

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue54

as part of the band, something which tested his compatibility with the other members. “Yeah it gelled. I think the personality thing was more what they were concerned about rather than if I could set down and play everything perfectly.” says Pat when asked how the band has responded to him as a new member.

This heavier and less melodic style of music ultimately runs the risk of the end product being less accessible to the audience. But this is something which Pat openly talks about. “Possibly, yeah, and I’d say purposely so as well. I think the record after ‘Conduit’ will be different again. It’s a constantly changing process.” he says. FFAF’s strong fan base and their continuous commitment can be attributed directly to the lyrical integrity of their songs, which has remained at the core of their music through-out their long spanning career. This is something which has earned them and, ultimately, kept them interested in their unique music. “[The lyrics] are all very personal. Both Chris and Matt are into poetry and literature. Everything has a meaning. They’re far more well-read than I am. They’re all about it. I couldn’t write the lyrics. Well, I could but it’d be more like The Cheeky Girls! Where did they go anyway? Poof! And The Cheeky Girls are gone.” says Pat.

Over the years FFAF have prided themselves on their ever changing musical styles. Their latest offering is yet another take on their music combining their renowned inspired lyrics with a heavier sound than ever before. “It’s not as focused on melody as previous records have been. I feel like it’s been quite intelligently put together.” admits Pat. “We are looking to get heaps more melodic on the next one. See how the dynamics go. Obviously having a new member in the band changes things, so that will change the way we make music.”

Aside from a host of this year’s summer festivals, FFAF will also be played Leeds and Reading Festival, but what did this fresh line-up’ bring to the set? “A special one. The band had the slot ten years ago and I remember that kicking off. It’s ranked one of the fifteen greatest gigs of all time, so we try and recreate that. in our performances now.” This autumn Funeral For A Friend will be playing a host of venues across the UK. The band will be playing Manchester Academy 2 on 5th October.

Ask Sheffield

ChicLifestyle | Ask Sheffield

Ellie Lewis finds out what Sheffield has to say...

W

What do you think paid apprenticeships could do for the city?

ith the news that Sheffield Council has just secured yet more funding for 100 new apprenticeships across the city, the question remains as to whether this alternative step on the job ladder is worthwhile for the youth of the city. The issue has sparked debate within the city with some people questioning the need for such a scheme.

The first batch of funding came over two years ago, back in 2011, when a hundred 16-18 year olds, who were not in education, training or employment in the city, were placed in apprenticeship job positions. That was the first success and proved widely popular. Then, last year, funding for a further hundred jobs was secured. After the success of the previous years’ apprenticeships, the council has renewed the funding which will, this year, allow

another hundred young people to benefit. The apprenticeships are part-subsidised by the council, allowing young people to enter the working world, which can be hard in the current economic climate. Chic Lifestyle Magazine took to the streets to see what our lovely citizens think of the scheme and the benefits it may have for Sheffield.

Shelby

Mary

Sarah

I think it’s a good idea, money wise. It’s a good opportunity for students; it could give them a taste of the working world.

It’ll be a good thing, really because there needs to be more shopping areas around the city centre because Meadowhall has taken all of the shops and all the shops have closed down here.

That’s obviously good for people who take that route, who come from college and want to do that. It’s a good thing for the city.

34, Promoter & DJ

Well, I’m looking for one actually. I think they’re a good thing for the city because it gets people working and it’s a good qualification.

It’s funny you should ask because I was actually involved in one of the council’s projects in the apprenticeship scheme. I think it’s good for local industry, I think it’s good for the youth of the city as well. They’re focusing on different factors like engineering and retailers, which obviously can only be good for the city in the long run.

31, Teacher

21, Student I think it will be quite a good thing. I suppose with apprenticeships it’s more of an opportunity for people to get into work and things earlier on.

ChicLifestyle | Astro Skype

Skype with an Astronaut Chic Lifestyle Magazine’s Ruby attends a Skype chat with the first astronaut to Tweet from space!

A

t school, the most popular careers that children aspired to when they grew up were sometimes realistic and sometimes quite far-fetched; zoo keeper, pop star and superhero. But one profession that always seemed to rank high on the list was an astronaut. Nigel McEnaney organised the recent live Skype video link with an astronaut from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Though the audience were originally expecting Astronaut Shannon Walker, scheduling conflicts meant that Astronaut Timothy ‘TJ’ Creamer was to answer the questions instead. Known as the astronaut who first tweeted from space, Creamer answered the audience’s questions with regards to his time in space as well as some of their other burning questions. He proclaims that he “will go down in history as having 140 characters in my legacy, in which there is actually a typographical error”.

How has being in space changed how you view life on earth?

I don’t think I have a different perspective from prior to flying, to post-flying. Part of that is because of the background I’ve got. Since I’m the son of an army officer, we moved around quite a bit with dad and then as an army officer myself, I moved around quite a bit also. The beauty of being outside of the Earth’s atmosphere and having the vantage point of looking through the windows simply solidifies some of the international feeling of what we’ve been going through. The bottom line is that when you look out of the window, there are no borders painted on maps. That’s why it makes it a little bit more difficult to find things to take pictures of, but it also emphasises that we are one big community and I came in with that appreciation before I flew and it just solidified.

18

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue54

Which part of the astronaut selection process did you find most challenging? Filling out the forms!

If you could improve the launch vehicle into space, how would you go about doing it?

I understand the need to reduce mass, I understand the need to be as ballistically conveniently designed as possible but if you were to make me snap my fingers and say ‘improve one thing about the launch vehicle into space’, I’d like a little more leg room so that we can stretch out.

Who were your astronaut heroes or inspirations in space exploration history?

You’re asking a great question because there have been so many. The best answer that I can give you is I’m old enough to have seen Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. That was a little spark that kind of piqued my interest in that realm and then that was sparked a little bit further by teachers through all school levels, pushing me because I enjoyed and was interested in maths and the sciences. There are other folks in the line of, not only space flight itself but also the space business, that I kind of attribute as heroes.

What’s the next big challenge for astronauts in space exploration?

Going further into space is the next big challenge. Then, we’ll look into sharing more with the public about what we’re going to study. Ruby Qaimkhani

Three things you didn’t know about astronauts! 1. Astronauts get taller when they are in space, it can be up to two inches if they are there for a month. Due to lack of gravity, the spine stretches while they’re in space. 2. They can choose from 70 different types of food but bread is not allowed in space as crumbs can be inhaled, get in one’s eyes or damage equipment. Tortillas are given to the astronauts instead. 3. They attach Velcro to their helmets so they can use to rough surface to scratch their nose. It’s not just the suits that have Velcro. You can find it all over the shuttle to secure all sorts of things, such as trays or even chess pieces. Ellie Lewis

Must-See Films

ChicLifestyle | Must-See Films

Ben Halford picks out the top must-see films this month!

This Is The End

Directors: Evan Goldberg & Seth Rogen

C

omedian buddies Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel meet up for a party at James Franco’s house. Everything goes swimmingly until none other than the apocalypse puts a dampener on proceedings. This Is The End promises a fair amount but doesn’t really deliver much. The film boasts a star-studded cast, but it’s not always managed very effectively with the film’s supporting roles being disappointingly underused. While the film boasts a great concept, it mostly discards it save for a few decent sequences, such as the homage to The Exorcist (1973). The stoner humour and sex jokes have been featured many times amongst the ensemble of comedians at hand, and whilst fans of this style may enjoy the near-the-knuckle comedy, it’s an acquired taste and there will be those who will be left feeling slightly cold towards this.

The Internship Director: Shawn Levy

V

ince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play two middle-aged salesmen who are left unemployed when their traditional company goes bust. Finally deciding to take on the modern world of work, the duo take up a contest at Google for a possible internship, but have to go up against younger, more tech-savvy competition. The Internship brings comparisons with 1998’s You’ve Got Mail. Whilst You’ve Got Mail hinged much of its plot on AOL, The Internship is extremely intensive in its coverage on Google (this is very unfortunate, given the recent bad press Google has received). Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn’s comic chemistry is present, giving the film some energy and the jokes can arouse a couple of chuckles, but the characters are too broad (especially Max Minghella’s role as the antagonist) and the plot is too predictable, working in a lot of underdog clichés. But mostly, whilst the film’s not completely terrible, it just can’t shrug off that it looks like a great big ad for Google.

The East

Director: Zac Batmanglij

B

rit Marling stars as a government agent who is dispatched to investigate a group of Ecoterrorists known as The East. Grungy and earthy in its tone and production style, The East presents some interesting questions on morality, but has a few plot holes and some of the roles feel a little mis-cast. This is especially true in regards to Alexander Skårsgard as East leader, Benji where a lack of clarity and exposition seems more of a reason for mystery than having a sense of mystique or enigma. The film’s rough-and-ready shooting style is subtly executed with a camcorder-styled approach to visuals, with the frame often shifting slightly, giving off a raw feeling, albeit with some occasionally impressive cinematography. For the most part, The East is a fairly good and somewhat thought-provoking film, but overall it’s nothing very special. ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue54

Rod Stewart – Time

hen you see the new Rod Stewart album rocket up the charts you can’t help thinking “Who is buying this and how is it number two?” Rather than be judgemental, though, I’m going to properly listen to the album with an open mind by picking the track titles that seem the most interesting. I must also mention that I’m listening on Beats headphones I’ve borrowed, and they make everything sound like I’ve got an ear infection so apologies if I’m unnecessarily cruel about the production. We’ll start with “Legless”; a song about getting drunk, a song about looking at the world and thinking “My God, this constant trickle of disappointment is driving me mad. Sod work, I’m getting shitfaced”. The fact that it does this while sounding so sedate is almost perverse. Rod’s voice is still a bit raspy, but there’s no real thrust to it here. It just sort of slips across the song like posh sauce on a plate. Nice but nowhere near enough. But wait! What’s this? The song that follows shows him singing properly and it’s sort of good! “Love

ehind Tom Odell and Rod Stewart in the album chart is the new release from QOTSA, “Like Clockwork”, sat at a pretty depressing number 19. You lot. Why aren’t QOTSA your favourite band? Lead single “My God is The Sun” sets the tone nicely. A quick rattle, a crunch of guitar and kick and then the song marches straight into your head and demands to sit where you’re sitting. Within 50 seconds the track hits the chorus and has already shown more invention and variety than the entirety of the Rod Stewart album I had to listen to this morning. “So good to be an ant who crawls atop a spinning

has no pride” is a bit like a Ryan Adams song and it seems that slowing the pace somewhat shows us where his voice lives now. Rod’s hurting in this track and he’s a pleasure to listen to although I wish he’d cut back on the glossy production so we could hear the man actually work. The lyrics aren’t great, but they sound like his words and he coaxes (or croaks?) some real power from them. Perhaps I’ve misjudged him? The treacly sound continues over the album and the sentiment keeps getting obscured. “Brighton Beach” for example is a wistful lament for both a girl Rod knew as a kid and a misspent youth he clearly misses which is all good stuff, but it doesn’t feel real. It’s not a true snapshot of the past, it’s been instagrammed and carefully presented as authentic and I just don’t buy it I’m afraid. There’s good stuff here, but it doesn’t connect as often as it should. The saddest proof arrives when you hear him cover the Tom Waits classic “Picture in a frame”. Tom is five years younger than Rod but makes him sound ancient. Listen to the original and the Rod version side by side and tell me who’s making music and who’s painting by numbers.

rock” Josh Homme’s frankly beautiful voice takes the lead with an almost feminine guile, never losing charge despite the huge noise. It’s a great track and isn’t even the best thing on the album, just the most single-y song to drag in new listeners. The great things QOTSA are capable of are often to be found what class as their ballads. This is a band that can do sexy and the title track “...Like Clockwork” shows you how a great band (or songwriter) can shift and change but always retain the little bit of special that makes us listen in the first place. A piano sets off and Josh sings about death and longing and it just sounds lovely. Best album of the month by an easy distance. Listen to it. If you don’t like it, listen to it again until you do because you’re doing it wrong.

h, the power of music! Just hearing that one special track can transport you back in time and bring back memories. This month we asked our Sales Manager, Melanie Jackson, to take us on a journey through her favourite albums of all time. Chill Out Album The XX - XX Why? This is one of the finest LP’s out from start to finish. With the stripped back haunting vocals of adoring love and heartache, XX keeps you hooked and before you know it it’s over. You’ve just lost 45mins or so and you’re wanting more. Honestly your repeat button gets worn down because of this album. This is a great self-produced, ahead of its time album. Best song on album? In 1995, the year I properly got into house music, this was THE album for me and my mates. A Gym With A Conscience Chic Lifestyle Magazine speaks to Unity Gym volunteer, Andrew about his work with the community.

H

aving a social conscience in this day and age is as rare as an Ellie Goulding song that doesn’t make your ears bleed, yet there are people out there who still have one (a social conscience that is, not a bleeding ear.) Take Andrew, for example; a man dedicated to voluntary work with the sole goal of, in his own words, “achieving a better community.” During the week he volunteers at Unity Gym, Wellington Street, where he and the co-manager Saeed work closely with youths. The gym itself has everything you need to train and is decorated with graffiti art and inspiration quotes. Andrew has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to working out, which he is always happy to share with gym-goers. But that isn’t where it ends, no, the gym itself is associated with a range of other community projects from the Step Up project (to make bus travel safer) to gang mediation. The gang related violence between youths from areas, such as Parson Cross, Park Hill, Pitsmoor

and Broomhall, is wide spread and can affect youths in the community. “Kids who are generally well behaved at home can be easily influenced.” explains Andrew. The outreach projects, along with Unity Gym, are funded by Ending Gang and Youth Violence (EGYV) and focus on helping youths affected by gang crime, association and other issues realise their full potential. Diversionary activities, such as having ex-convicts come to talk to troubled young people about prison life, are but one thread to the rich tapestry of this community aid. “It’s my belief that just removing someone from that environment is going to do nothing; apart from they’re not going to be there for an hour. They need to speak to people who have been there and done it.” says Andrew, who has sat in and conducted many of these activities. Recently the Home Office highlighted Unity Gym as a place of good practice in Sheffield, which luckily

secured the gym funding. However, in order to keep doing the work within the community the gym needs members. For just £20 a month you can be a do-gooder two-fold; a healthy person (assuming you actually go to the gym) and someone giving back to the community via your membership fees. In his spare time Andrew runs the printing and branding business called Taylored with his business partner, James, which, of course, did all the branding and merchandise for Unity Gym. The gym is always looking for volunteers, so if this is something you’re interested in then don’t hesitate to get in contact. ChicLifestyle | The Debate

Should Sheffield still be called the Steel City? Ellie Lewis and Charlotte Grainger debate about Sheffield’s heritage.

Sheffield should not be called the Steel City anymore! It’s not been the Steel City for decades.

The steel industry made Sheffield. If we ignore that, we’re ignoring our heritage.

T

F

ime and time again I hear Sheffield being called the “Steel City”, which seems unfair given its many other traits. Sure, in the 19th Century, it gained an international reputation for its steel production, but the modern day Sheffield is far from merely an industrial city. Aside from anything else, we were not the only city to produce a high amount of steel, there were a great number of industrial areas within the UK and Europe who produced just as much steel as we did and I can’t imagine that those places are still feebly grasping on to the label. The city’s industry sadly died out decades ago, along with the coal industry, and now Sheffield is known for many other things including being the third biggest English district by population. This city has the highest ratio of trees to people of any city in Europe, isn’t that something to shout about? I’ve never heard anyone refer to it as the “Third City” or the “Green City” despite these having just as much, if not more, relevance to the city as it stands today.

If you are a native to this city then you should take ownership of that heritage, don’t cast it aside in favour of things deemed cooler, such as the music and art scene. Sure, these things are as much a part of Sheffield as the industry, but they came afterwards and they hardly set us apart from any other city in the UK. Most cities have a music scene and art scene and, yes, I dare to say it; many of these cities have a better music and art scene (take Liverpool, Manchester and London, to name but a few).

What’s more is that Sheffield is built around a number of hills and five rivers. With two universities in the city, it prides itself on having a seriously good nightlife including an eclectic mix of night clubs, bars and music venues.

So let’s first establish that we are not known for these things, we did not invent art or music and we are in no way unique for having had a handful of bands that made it big originate from this city. Now that’s out of the way we can focus on what does make us unique and that is our industry.

Leadmill, Plug, Corporation and West Street Live are amongst some of the biggest and best night clubs and live music venues in Sheffield and many people love them so much that they keep coming back in search of new music and good nights out.

Another thing people tend to cite when raising this argument is the fact that we are the greenest city in the UK. This is something of an honour, but doesn’t overshadow the industry here. If anything it is a feather in our cap that we were able to maintain both the industry and the environment for so long!

Not only that, but many famous people were born and/or established in Sheffield like Def Leppard, Pulp, Bring Me the Horizon and Arctic Monkeys, the last of which have become as iconic as the city itself.

If you walk around this city and really pay attention to the minor details you will pick up on hat tips to the city’s origins. From the everlasting cutlery exhibition in Millennium Galleries to the steel structures dotted around the city, the streets tell a story of what this city once was and what it should be remembered for. I, for one, am extremely proud of that and believe if we forget about that we will have very little to differentiate ourselves from every other place in the country.

Sheffield is memorable for so many things such as Meadowhall, its countless galleries and museums, the Winter Gardens (the largest urban greenhouse in Europe) and even the Full Monty films. The city just wants one thing, to set itself apart from a moniker that was awarded to it decades ago, in order to really come into its own.

22

orget what you know of Sheffield today because what really made Sheffield, back in the 19th Century, was its steel industry. This city’s economy, at that time, rested on the very industry. The name the “Steel City” is thrown about in this city; it’s a staple cliché every writer uses when writing about the city. This can get annoying, sure, but that is no reason to completely ignore the heritage of the city itself.

YO! Sushi

Charlotte Grainger tries the unique cuisine of the Japanese

Have you eaten here before?” No, we had to admit we hadn’t. As YO! Sushi virgins we were ever so slightly taken aback by the set-up of the restaurant.

If you’ve never been, this includes a conveyer belt system whereby you pick up your colour coded dishes when they happen to pass by your seat. It may sound strange, because it is strange, but for novelty value we enjoyed it all the same.

Luckily for us it’s quite acceptable to order more than one dish at Yo! Sushi so I ordered myself a dish of Chicken Katsu; crispy chicken smothered in a sweet and fruity sauce. This, to my utter dismay, came on a bed of raw cabbage. I have to admit I panicked but the situation was quickly rectified when I removed the chicken and put it on a separate plate. The chicken itself was extremely tasty; crisped

The place certainly had that urban vibe going on and we felt very cosmopolitan sitting in the middle of a bustling crowd whilst eating Japanese cuisine.

One dish simply wasn’t enough, since we’re greedy girls with big appetites (by which I mean stomachs).

This was disappointing for everyone involved, but we soon got over that by trying some hot sake (180ml), which we drank in shots. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted anything which was so pungently close to the taste of pure alcohol before in my life. I was shocked to find out it was actually only 14 % ABV and, subsequently, felt quite silly. Throughout the meal we were served by what can only be described as a happy-go-lucky waitress, who’s accent only served to entertain. We were made to feel welcome and appreciated throughout the experience.

We were served by a chirpy American with bright red hair who explained the rules of the game (um... I mean meal, sorry) to us. I tried the Chicken Yakisoba; marinated chicken pieces in moreish sauce with pan fried noodles. This surprised me, as, being a vegetable-phobe, I’d worried that it’d be all greens and no meat, but I was oh-so wrong. There were copious amounts of chicken pieces and nicely spiced noodles. My friend opted for the Vegetable Gyoza, which she assured me was just delicious.

At the beginning of the meal we both attempted to eat with chopsticks, but, being uncoordinated, we gave up after the first dish and ended up eating with spoons like you might imagine a toddler would.

For those of you wishing to try YO! Sushi for yourself the Leeds Harvey Nic’s branch has an exclusive offer. You can enjoy four yellow plates and a glass of champagne for just £20, which is almost half the price of the original RRP. Why not, eh?

to perfection. My friend decided she would try the Spicy Pepper Squid, which she gobbled down in minutes, and so I can only assume it tasted good.

ShakespearesWhisky Files We talk to Shakespeares about their top whisky choices for this month!

O

nce again we are graced with the lovely presence of the Whisky Files. Chris Bamford, whisky expert and bearded man, is back giving us yet another lesson in all things whisky! This time Chris has turned his hand to presenting and the Whisky Files has been taped for all to see. The first whisky we look at this month is the Arran 12 Year Old Cask Strength, which is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky. Chris explains that this particular tipple comes from the Southern Scottish island of Arran where there was no distillery up until 1995 when the Arran Distillery was founded. From the nose of this drink there is quite a fruity smell of peaches and nectarines. This is due to the fact that the whisky is finished in cherry casks. As you might well know cherry is made from grapes and some of the flavour of the grapes is transferred via the cask whilst the whisky is finishing. To drink the whisky has hints of spice, which comes from the wood of the cask, nutmeg and orange zest. The whisky is 54.1% ABV, which is pretty damn strong so Chris suggests trying this one with a couple of drops of water so as to bring out the full potential within the flavours. At Shakespeares a single of Arran 12 Year Old will set you back a mere £3.80. Chris moves on to his next whisky, a golden coloured one, which takes its name from the word

gold in Gaelic; Glenmorangie Nectar D’or. This whisky, Chris explains, is finished in white wine casks and is an extremely complex whisky. The aroma is dry and fruity and Chris claims he can smell limes and sultanas with an almost coconutesque scent. He tastes it and proclaims that it is very smooth, dry and bitter to begin with but quickly develops in sweet, nutty flavours which have hints of almonds. The whisky is also quite a honeyed drink, both in taste and colouring. The Glenmorangie Distillery was founded way back in the days of 1843 and to this day each whisky that is produced there is judged by the committee the “Twelve Men of Tain”. The whisky retails at £3.80 and comes in at 46% ABV.

legal in Scotland. Chris suggests that, since the distillery stands on quite a remote Scottish album, Ardbeg may have been able to avoid the legal restrictions. This one comes in at 52.1% ABV and will set you back £5.50 for a single in Shakespeares, but, as Chris says, this is a once in a lifetime experience, since it’s limited edition, so it’s well worth the extra cash! Watch the full video at: www.chiclifestylemagazine.co.uk!

The third and, sadly, final whisky for this month’s Whisky Files is the tongue twisting Ardbeg Ardbog, a limited edition bottle from the Ardbeg Distillery. Most interestingly, as Chris tells us, this whisky has it’s very own day; June 1st is Arbog Day! Since 1996 the Ardbeg Distillery has been owned by the Glenmorangie Distillery and is well known for its rather peaty whiskies. This one is certainly no exception and has a smoky, peaty kick when you first taste it. There is a maple style sweetness which balances out any smoky BBQ flavours, since this whisky is also finished in cherry casks. Controversially the Ardbeg Distillery was founded in 1815, which was actually before distilling was

D’Micheals – bringing the laid back charm of Miami to the Steel City

t’s Saturday night and D’Micheals, the bar hoping to bring a new and different vibe to the streets of Sheffield, is definitely the place to be. The bar is alive with the sound of laughter and the cocktail makers are doing their thing behind the bar. Over the past four months D’Micheals popularity has grown and grown.

“If you’ve got a dream, you can follow that dream.” says Marshal. That is exactly what his wife Dr Michelle Niak did when she, along with Marshal, decided to take a chance and followed her dream of opening a bar in Sheffield. The American themed bar is a refreshing change in the city, something which its popularity can be attributed to. Marshal says he wanted the bar to have the “Wow factor” and it seems this is something he’s truly delivered on. “It’s about remembering that the customer is king.” Marshal explains. For him, customer service is key. “You’ve worked hard all week and you don’t want to go somewhere and feel like you’re paying

Aside from the great service, the extensive (and might we say affordable) cocktail menu is enough to draw a crowd. Marshal and his wife have certainly teamed up here to recreate the laid back cool atmosphere of a hip Miami bar. We love it.

Do you think before you speak?

F

rom the utterance of the first word to the last wish or confession, language remains our most powerful and precious tool. Second to none of our other skills, language has the capacity to create or destroy friendships (we’ve all said the wrong thing from time to time, haven’t we?), to raise or fail leaders, to regulate our moods and to guide our behaviour. The question is, then, do we think before we speak or, in other words, do we think independently of language? Research has previously suggested that language is a key element of “theory of mind”, the human ability to understand others’ intentions or actions. The questions raised by such scientific claims are as big as the answers they provide. Does it mean that people who suffer from language disability are less “intelligent” or, even, less “human”? This is very hard to test. Many of the tasks we perform use language, so how can one separate the language from the task? Yael Benn of The University Of Sheffield completed her PhD attempting to do just that. With her supervisor, Prof. Rosemary Varley, and her

colleagues she compared the performance of healthy individuals, and those with severe language difficulty as a result of brain damage, on a range of tasks. They also used fMRI to compare the brain activity of the two groups while performing mathematical calculations. The findings of this suggested that language is not essential in thought process. You can think and do tasks without language. The patients had very similar activations to those of the healthy participants, apart from the fact that they did not show any language activation since these parts were severely damaged. So, to answer the question of do you think before you speak, yes you do, and your brain is not reliant on language in order to function. While this is important and can have implications for those who suffer damage to language at later life, there still remains the question- could calculation, as well as other high order functions, have developed without the aid of language? In other words, is it us humans who invented language, or could it be the language that invented us? Yael Benn & Charlotte Grainger

It’s A Dream Come True for Runners

F

or years runners have been saying that visualisation is the key to success. If you can imagine yourself heart pumping, your legs pounding the pavement, hurling yourself over the finish line then you’re much more likely to be left with the feeling that you can really do it. Unfortunately no amount of closing your eyes and hoping for the best can compete with actually getting out there and training but a dream expert has claimed there is a way to make it all seem easier. Charlie Morley, a dream expert claims that a lucid dream, in which you consciously know that running is the best way to prepare for a marathon. According to Morley during this method, similar to that of being hypnotised, the neural pathways involved in the ability to run are physically strengthened meaning that when you wake up from your dream you’ll find running easier. So don’t feel guilty next time you choose an extra half hour in bed over a run, just make sure you dream about crossing that finish line instead! Laura Kay

Sexist or Science?

T

he stereotypical view of each gender when concerned with love is an unfashionable notion. The idea that men should ask women out and not vice versa may seem out-dated. It’s certainly not something I’d want to propagate without good reason (especially given that I consider myself to be fairly brave when it comes to these matters); however, luckily I have a good reason so here goes. I’m stating the blindingly obvious here, but this notion is evolutionary! A recent study published by Taylor and Francis Group entitled “Romantic motives and risk-taking: an evolutionary approach”, suggested that men are bigger risk-takers than women, particularly in matters of the heart. This is purely down to survival instinct. In the past men had to take a number of risks in order

30

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue54

to survive. They were the hunter-gatherers, whilst women stayed in shelter to nurture the young. Men who were willing to take greater risks were likely to “win” (and I use that term very loosely here) a better mate, since they would be able to provide for them well. The new research suggests that whilst times have changes attitudes such as this have not. Men still innately believe that in order to gain a better partner they should take risks. So, ladies, give guys a break when they go out on a limb to ask you out they’re only doing what feels natural, not being sexist! Charlotte Grainger

ou might think that the rollered hairstyles, cute candy colours and happy-go-lucky swinging tunes are simply a thing of the past, belonging to Grease re-runs. However, hidden into a corner of Abbeydale Road’s antique and vintage quarter, lies a haven of kitsch hairdressing delight. Stepping into Purdys is like stepping back in time. Everything is vintage and authentic, from the baby pink hairdryers to the spinning records to the well thumbed through magazines. Having opened just six weeks ago, owner Jane Infanti is a lover of all things vintage, specialising in styles reminiscing all eras from the 1940s-70s. “The salon is vintage style, because that’s the kind of style I like. But I do everything else as far as hairdressing and treatments as well.” And there’s certainly nothing out dated about Purdys, Jane says whilst she likes vintage

style, she specialises in combining this with modern fashion to give each look a contemporary twist. If that isn’t your thing, though, Jane also offers a range of modern hair styles and treatments. Fully qualified in all areas of hairdressing, Jane offers all services from cuts and colours to themed wedding hair and hen parties, bringing the full vintage experience to homes or in salon. Purdys also offers a range of beauty treatments, all provided in their Moroccan inspired beauty room. I put my hair in Jane’s hands to be transformed into a modern take on a vintage wonder. Jane used curling tongs, exclusive boutique brand, Percy & Reed, hairspray and dry shampoo, and a wealth of hair grips to produce an early ‘60s inspired style.

Purdys offers an experience unique to any other salon in Sheffield. A truly vintage salon, I could finally live the Grease dream. For anyone wanting to reminisce on days gone by, experience what the ’50s was all about or even achieve an authentic ‘60s hairstyle, Purdys is the place. I’d recommend it for the retro tea cups alone!

are also available, plus specialists help in sports rehabilitation and chiropody. With so much available it’s hard to make a choice, however something we’d recommend is the Minx nail treatments. Painting on an intricate design is a messy task, however with Minx your nail designs can be as quirky as you’d like. Consisting of a printed nail wrap, designs range from animal print to American flags, easily applied and lasting for a few weeks. One of our favourites is the metallic leopard print, adding a fierce dazzle of gold to your fingertips. The nail wrap is simply heated under a lamp then applied to the nail, sticking on and filed to size. Passion Beauty Studios are also at Norton Lees, and visit our website to take advantage of all Passion Beauty’s latest offers. We expect to see some pretty amazing talons waving about Sheffield!

60’s Glam Look Lucy Robertson gives us some beauty tips!

T

he Autumn Winter catwalk showed that the ‘60s style cat flick liner is here to stay- however this time, it has a futuristic twist. Here are five simple steps to achieving a bang on trend swinging ‘60’s look. 1. Using a monochrome eyeshadow trio (we love No7’s Stay Perfect Trio in Twilight) sweep the lightest colour over your eyelid and up to the browbone to highlight. 2. Taking a gel liner kit, like Maybelline’s Lasting Drama Gel Liner, draw the liner along your lash line ending in a defined feline flick. 3. Now, using an eye brush, take the darkest colour of the trio and gently blend it into the socket line of your eye, blending all the way down the flick of the liner. Buff over the edges with the brush to soften the edges.

No7 Stay Perfect Eyeshadow, £9.50

Katy Perry Fake Eyelashes, £5.95

Sleek Blusher in Rose Gold, £4.49

4. Next, apply a pair of fluttery fake lashes to your upper lash line. The Katy Perry for Eylure lashes in Cool Kitty give the feline finish you’re after, but remember to cut the lashes to fit before applying! 5. Finally, mascara! Apply lashings of Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara to your lower lashes to give a doe-eyed ‘60s feel. And there you have it: a simple yet striking ‘60s eye make-up look. Keep the rest of your make-up minimal with a flush of peach blush to the apples of your cheeks (Sleek’s Powder Blush in Rose Gold does the trick) and a neutral lip colour (Revlon’s Lip Butter in Crème Brulee is subtle yet sweet) and you’re good to go!

Tired of doing your makeup every single day?

Then why not try it Cleopatra style with semipermanent make-up; the royal look with none of the hassle.

I

t may sound bizarre but semi-permanent makeup could be the answer to all your beauty prayers. Imagine waking up every single day looking absolutely stunning (hey, hey, we’re not saying you don’t already, but we all need a little help every now and then). Imagine not having to waste half an hour (minimum) every day before you go out ensuring that each eye-lash is in place and your lips are lusciously rouged. Semi-permanent make-up, or micropigmentation, involves minute particles of hypoallergenic colour pigment being placed below the surface of the skin. We know that Queen Cleopatra in ancient Egypt used various substances in order to give her eyes semi-permanent make-up and if it’s good enough for a beauty like her then it’s good enough for us! One of the only salons to provide semi-permanent make-up in Sheffield is Top Nails Salon. The salon has eight years of experience practising the procedure, which is now widely popular across the UK and America. The make-up is designed to enhance your natural features with slight pigmentation, it may also be known as cosmetic tattooing. The salon offers a range of semipermanent make-up such as eyeliner, lip liner, full lip, eyebrows and even beauty spots! Unlike tattooing, though, micropigmentation has minimal drawbacks and recovery time. That means you can have a procedure done in your lunch break and go back to work afterwards. Top Nails Salon has been established in Sheffield for 13 years and has expertly trained staff that will help you every step of the way. And at the moment Top Nails Salon is offering 20% off on all semi-permanent make-up procedures. Of course, deciding to have something which will last a matter of years is a tough decision so if you’re not sure but want to discuss the options feel free to pop into Top Nails Salon where the team will be happy to help! fter a summer of bright, in your face colours, it is seriously time to tone it down. This month it’s all about understating that summer look. Throw out your over the top coloured prints, they’re hurting out eyes, and instead go for something a little more subtle. Mute those colours and darken those shades when choosing pieces. It’s time to get sophisticated with your style. We love this Evisu Kariya Pattern Tee, which fuses the free –spirited vibes of the summer with dark and, ultimately, toned down colour. The creative design is all we need here to ensure the world knows what an individual we are, without shouting it too loud. The tee can be teamed with these stylish Dr Denim Karl Slim Fit Chinos in green (yes, we are allowing you to have some colour) to create a cool and effortless look. Finally, the New Balance M576TPM Tan Trainers are your chance to show off your experimental side, plus we absolutely love them!

To Beard or not to Beard? That is most certainly the question on our lips this month. The manly beard, a fashion statement in its own right, has become something of an icon over the past few years with stunning examples of the male gender, such as Ben Affleck and Ryan Gosling, donning the hairy face accessory with pride. It has also been taken on as a symbol of hipster status, slapped across the dumbstruck face of every unbuttoned-denim-shirt-wearing man/boy across Sheffield. Love it or hate it the beard is here to stay (by the sorry looks of things). However, there may be another way… Why don’t men try, and I know I am going out on something of a limb here, shaving? I’m not saying that Ben Affleck doesn’t look delicious with his man hair, but then, Ben Affleck was always a fine specimen of man, even in his pre-beard days. Him and Gosling aside, I can find few reasons that men should grow it out. Yet, I can find a couple of strong reasons I believe the faces of men globally should see a razor every now and then. First and foremost on my list of reasons is, you guessed it, kissing. I do not want to kiss a man and get a mouth full of hair. I’m sorry but that just doesn’t do it for me. Nor do I want to get a face rash from being grazed with sandpaper-esque stubble. Cut it out. Cut it off.

EffortlessStyle

Aside from that (if we can ever overlook the major kissing drawback) is the fact that the hair is unsightly; especially when it looks like it should be growing on your other pair of cheeks. If you can’t grow a full bushy outfit then don’t bother at all, you’re wasting everyone’s time. And even when you do it successfully it still covers up your jawline; arguably the best part of a man’s face.

he festival season may be drawing to an end, but that doesn’t mean we have to lose that bohemian feeling. No, instead let’s dig in those nails and hold firmly on to our free-spirited style for at least the end of the summer. This month we’re channelling our inner goddesses with flowing dresses which are ideally complemented by tight waist belts so as to accentuate curvaceous figures (and give the illusion of curves to those of us who are not so blessed.) This ASOS Medallion Print 70’s Maxi Dress is ideal for those of us wanting to experiment with boho style whilst still maintaining an air of decorum and grace. Bold statement jewellery is an absolute must at the moment with it being seen everywhere. We love this Amaya by Priyanka Key Necklace in Silver which would perfectly suit almost any outfit. Finally to complete the look we suggest doing something you can only get away with in the summer; wearing sandles. These Sweedish Hasbeens Sandles in beige are stunning and a staple summer piece.

AutumnFashionColumn

T

he sun is fading here so let’s pack up and jet off to sunnier shores; and when we’ve reached our destination, the first thing many of us do is reach for is our swimsuit or bikini set. Whether you relish the chance to test the “less is more” theory, or shiver at the thought of stripping down to your swimwear, it’s a part of holiday life which can’t really be avoided, so choosing the right one or two piece should definitely be near the top of your holiday to do list. There are many styles out there; something to suit every taste, size and shape. Whether it’s strapless or supported, patterned or plain, you name it, the high street has it. But the safest and most stylish option comes in the form of a plain white swimsuit. Topshop’s version is finished with broiderie detail to add a little punch to the timeless one piece. To add more glamour to some woven wedges (also from Topshop), a Monsoon trilby and a Pieces striped beach bag. The dashes of navy throughout add a colourful element to the simple costume. I don’t want to jinx anything- but just in case the sea breeze gets a little chilly, don’t forget a crisp white beach jumper. This thin, loose fitting jumper from Seafolly acts as a great cover up, but also completes a glamorous, brilliantly white outfit.

FreeSpirit

This outfit is timeless, and can see you through from beach to bar, or pool to party if you need it to. A slick of red lipstick and –hopefully- a golden glow are the only accessories you need. Megan Sutton

ChicLifestyle | Northern Style & Single Girl

Northern Style Designer Alex Christopher tells us about his newly opened online boutique.

Single Girl: Blind Date

B

lind date. It’s either a phrase that fills you with a sense of dread or a shiver of excitement.

For me the idea of being thrust into an unknown situation with a complete stranger is terrifying. However, after realising that my fear of becoming a lonely old cat lady is starting to become more realistic, I plucked up the courage and called my friend for her help.

W

hen it comes to your own style, it should be exactly that, your own. It’s easy to get bogged down in High Street trends and end up looking something of a cloned mannequin, but why not try something a little different and, more importantly, local? “Each To Their Own” is the creation of Designer Alex Christopher, a man who quite literally believes in indulging in your own sense of style, whatever that may be. The brand started with shops in Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester and has recently opened an online boutique. We spoke to Designer, Alex Christopher, about the style that’s taking the North by storm. When did you decide you wanted to become a fashion designer? It actually happened by accident! I used to customise my own clothing as I could never find anything out there that was different. I was sick of the usual clothes from the High-Street and the overpriced designer labels. How did you get started? My friends and people in clubs used to always ask me where my customized clothes were from. I had just come back from a season abroad travelling and decided it was now or never to make a go of it. I started making my own clothes from there and wanted to showcase other independent designers, so took on some other local designers – that was how “Each To Their Own” was born! What makes your clothing different? I try and combine different patterned fabrics and experiment with the drape and fluidity of garments. I wanted to create a really nice tailored suit, so to make it stand out I designed the suit with an overexaggerated lapel. I like mixing tartan into the mix at the moment for both men’s and women’s wear for autumn/winter, but maybe not as you’d usually expect to give it a twist. All the clothes are made in England and in small quantities so they are limited editions to maintain that exclusive feel.

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue54

On occasion all the shops and the website stock different colours in the same garment, so when my customers go out on a night out and never see the person in the same thing. What is your own personal style motto? The name of the shop obviously comes from the saying ‘Each to Their Own’. It was always my response when people thought my dress sense was a bit out there so I suppose that would have to be my style motto! What is the inspiration behind the brand? The inspiration behind my own label comes from my inspiration of nightlife and house music clubbing scene. I started the label back when everyone used to get really dressed up and make an effort to wear the newest designers and labels on a night out. I wanted to keep that attitude going. The designs are so diverse from vests to tailoring that no matter where you are going you can wear one of my designs. Where can people find out more? Our newly launched online boutique www.eachtotheirown.co.uk or you can always stop and ask me anything if you see me in any of the shops!

This friend has always considered herself as a mother of matchmaking and time upon time has tried to set me up with the most bearded of blokes when we go out. It’s sad to say that she was more than delighted at the prospect of setting me up with someone and suggested a guy who she used to work with. When I tried to pry further details out of her, she said: “He’s really nice, a bit weird, but a massive animal fan. You can just talk to him about that. You’ll be fine!” It’s fair to say the conversation didn’t leave me feeling confident. But before I could say any more, she had sent him a text arranging our date. I only was allowed to know his name half an hour before meeting him, as my friend was too suspicious I would stalk him online. I acted annoyed but I knew it was true. It’s just too easy these days to do some background digging into a potential partner via the internet. After we had been introduced to each other and ordered a drink we were left alone un-chaperoned by our mutual friend. I cannot even begin to describe to you how awkward it became. We spoke about our drinks, the weather, his pet tortoise, but ultimately nothing of any real substance. As bad as it sounds, I knew I wasn’t attracted to him within the first ten seconds and I think he felt the same way towards me. I think we both breathed a sigh of relief when my phone rang and we could make our excuses to leave. I wished both him and his tortoise the best of luck for the future, just one that didn’t involve me. Blind dates are a good way to meet new people, if you trust your friends that is! My advice however would be to go somewhere for a date that involves you both sharing a fun experience and less small talk. Sitting behind a table twiddling my thumbs and staring around a bar for an hour was sadly not the best blind date. But I can imagine it can be fun if you meet the right person so bring on the next! t’s a Friday night and that means just one thing, it’s time to go out, drink, relax and socialise. You’ve been waiting for this all week and now it’s finally time to take some you time. What do you prioritise? Your outfit? Your cash and cards? Tagging yourself and twelve other friends in a status about how great your night is? How about your safety? The latest video campaign for Mercury Taxis, which has been produced by Chic Media, a subsidiary of Chic Promotions Marketing, centres on keeping yourself safe on a night out. Getting home safely should be your number one priority when out having a good time. If you have been drinking, for example, you are particularly susceptible to petty crime and so you should avoid walking the streets in order to find a cab to take you home. The video promotes the idea that, in order to ensure you arrive home safely after a night out on the town, you should rely on mercury taxis trusted call back service. Calling Mercury Taxis whilst you are still inside the club means you will not have to go out on the streets looking for a black cab, instead you can rest safe in the knowledge that your taxi will be here soon to pick you up and when they are they will give you a quick call back so you can meet them.

within the Steel City, due to their swift and reliable taxi service. “We were thinking about safety in Sheffield. On a Friday and Saturday night Sheffield is a buzzing city and this prompted us to ask how safe people were on a night out. This is something not many people think about when going out, but we should always be aware of our actions and try to keep ourselves safe at all times.” says Melanie Jackson, of Chic Promotions Marketing, who came up with the concept for the video itself. “Mercury Taxis are renowned for their great service in this city and we wanted to accentuate that within this video. Using their call back service people can ensure that they will get home safely. I think this is a great service and one which I’ve relied on time and time again myself.”

Motoring Tim Barnes-Clay reviews this month’s top car

Rapid Drive Car Hire

H Volvo XC70 D5 SE Lux Geartronic By Tim Barnes-Clay Motoring Journalist t @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk VOLVO CARS paved the way for a totally new segment with the V70 Cross Country in 1997 – and then came the less long-winded moniker: the XC70.

T

he Swedish company’s focus in the continuous development of the XC70 model has been to create a well-heeled on-road car with competent, off-road ability. The rugged and refined present-day look reflects the vehicle’s underlying strength and competence. Volvo says to think of it as an “exclusive goose down jacket, designed around those who like their adventure with a true feeling of sophistication”. Pretentious marketing spin? Not really. You see, as well as All-Wheel Drive, Hill Descent Control is a further boost to the XC70’s goanywhere potential. And these days, fresh exterior design cues sharpen its road presence. If truth be told, the XC70 would look at home in any environment, whether it’s in the middle of the open country or at your place of business. As with the V70 estate car, the rear seats can be folded down in three 40/20/40 sections. Collapse all of the seats flat and the load space swells from 575 litres to 1,600 litres. Another handy function is the power-operated tailgate. What’s more, the outer rear seats can be fitted with integrated child booster cushions that offer children from the age of three and upwards a cosy and safe ride height. That’s a massive tick in the box for any parent of youngsters. On the road, IntelliSafe, - Volvo’s umbrella name for all its active safety systems, is a vital part of the driver-centric approach in the XC70. City Safety technology is fitted as standard, and this advanced technology works at speeds of up to 31MPH. You can also fit Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake. This watches out for people strolling into the

39

ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue17

car’s path and automatically puts the anchors on the vehicle if there’s an imminent collision. In addition, Road Sign Information supports you by displaying road signs on the instrument panel. The XC70’s seats are certainly amongst the most comfortable of the many cars I’ve driven – and the Volvo feels one of the best rides for keeping your children protected. Everything about the vehicle feels tank-solid – from the reassuring ‘thud’ the closing doors make to the quality cabin materials and thick, padded, leather seats. Still, a heavyweight, high-centre-of-gravity car like this has its downsides – it’s not amazingly nimble and all four corners tend to squeal if you take bends at speed. The steering also feels slightly lumpy around town. But get it on a long commute or off-road and it’ll fare very well. The six-speed geartronic transmission makes especially light work of any distance driving and acceleration is brisk. Granted - off-road, it’s not as heroic as a pure mudplugger, but the XC70’s talented enough to take the family into the rough – or up a snow covered hill if you need it.

Travel: Salamanca A Spanish city of culture & nightlife

W

hen visiting Spain, most travellers either opt for a holiday on the beach or visit well-known cities like Barcelona or Madrid. If you want a more authentic experience of life in Spain, why not visit a smaller, more traditional place? Salamanca is a beautiful city with a lot of historical relevance and – before you start yawning – also what is described by many people as the best night life in Spain. You won’t encounter super-clubs or famous dj’s, but you will experience a night out like no other. Salamanca is known for its pure, accent-free Spanish, which makes it an ideal destination for anyone wanting to brush up on their language skills. It’s also one of the cheapest cities in Spain – what more are you waiting for?

Hotel Don Juan

S

alamanca is a very popular tourist destination among foreigners and spaniards alike, which means that accommodation prices are set at a competitive level. If you are looking for both a central location and good value for money, you may want to consider the Hotel Don Juan. It is located in the heart of the city, right across from the Plaza Mayor. Double rooms start at £35, including breakfast and wi-fi. From here, all of the city’s main attractions are less than a ten minute walk away.

Mares de Van Dyck

D

o not leave Salamanca without paying a visit to the ‘tapas zone’ of the city: Calle Van Dyck. Located 15 minutes north of the city centre, this street is the home of all tapas lovers. If you’re in the mood for seafood, head to Mares de Van Dyck where you can order various ‘raciones’ (plates to share in a group) of fried baby squids, octopus in garlic, mussels, calamares and different types of fish. Don’t forget a side order of traditional spanish ‘patatas bravas’ with alioli; and if you dare, try the incredibly spicy fried Padron peppers. Don’t like seafood? The Mexican Lounge offers a large selection of authentic Mexican food, both in tapas sizes or as a main meal.

Bar Doze

or a calmer, more classy evening, head to Doze, a premium bar and restaurant just across from the Plaza Mayor. The secret star of the cocktail menu is the strawberry mojito, while the gin club features what seems like every quality brand of gin under the sun. A fun fact about Salamanca is that it has more bars per square metre than any other city in Spain. Because of this, a lot of bars have been elaborately decorated in a specific theme. There is Jacko’s, a bar dedicated entirely to the King of Pop, BNDR, painted from top to bottom in Futurama comic strips, and Submarino, which from the inside looks like – you guessed it – a submarine. The best way to out in Salamanca is to not tie yourself to go one place but hop in between bars to see where the night takes you.

hether or not you are in Salamanca on a romantic couple’s holiday, a trip to the famous lovers’ garden “El Huerto de Calixto y Melibea“ is a must-do. This beautiful garden is tucked away behind the old cathedral. It is rumored that Calixto and Melibea, two figures of medieval literature, met here in secret because of the ‘Romeo and Juliet’-esque nature of their relationship

Travel:

Located in Dalton-in-Furness, in the stunning, un-touristy South Lakes, the newly refurbished Bar 20 is perfect to unwind. Serving classic and original cocktails and wines at reasonable prices. The modern design is great for younger visitors and couples. The bar also holds a weekly quiz night on Wednesdays in cooperation with the neighbouring pizza restaurant, quizzing, cocktails and pizza – what more could you ask for?

Nowadays, the garden has become a spot where young people meet, play the guitar and watch the sun set over the city and the river Tormes. If you come with that special someone, don’t forget to bring your personal locket, which you can attach to the well in the centre of the garden.

his tale of feuding brothers set in Leicester; is the latest cinematic offering from the makers of the 2011 hit “Resistance”. The plot centres on the young Shalini (Amara Karan) who has just returned to her hometown with the exciting news that she is to be married. It is not all plain sailing for Shalini, though, as her family is ripping at the seams. Her father, Raja (Harish Patel), and uncle, Jagi (Kulvinder Ghir) are in the middle of a two decade long feud and have even gone as far as to rival each other within their restaurants, each of which

he blockbuster of the season, Zanjeer, is set out to be a huge hit. Directed by Apoovra Lakhia, this is an action film at its best. The story follows Vijay, an honest and dry police officer who has just been transferred by the system for chasing underworld villains. Currently he is on a murder case where the key witness, who, of course, witnessed the murder taking place, is flat out refusing to co-operate. The plot follows Vijay as he attempts to go up against the dark underworld and risks his life in order to find the truth of his murder case.

uses half of their mother’s recipe book to create their menu. Shalini would like nothing more than for both her father and her uncle to attend her wedding, however the brothers drown out her pleas in favour of arguing with one another. The unique plotline for this family comedy-drama is based around stories from the director’s childhood and is therefore a fascinating watch. Watching the two brothers feud over nothing in particular, whilst conveniently ignoring the fact that if they joined forces then their restaurant could be the best in the city, is entertaining to say the least. But at its heart this is a film about family and values.

Along the way Vijay comes across damsel in distress Ria, who is wanted dead by the notorious Teja Gang. Vijay decides to help her by giving her shelter, but soon realises that she is starting to mean more to him. At the same time he is attempting to find his own parent’s killers. The plot unfolds with a great deal of drama, crashes and bangs. This is an action film which tries to cover every single plotline. Will it work? Watch it to see.

But is love more important than tradition? Only time will tell in this truly contemporary take on classic love stories. Directed by Band Baaja Baaraat, this film will be previewed at the Toronto International Film Festival this month and then be released in selected cinemas across the UK.

Crossfit

A High Intensity Workout

D

o you dabble in gym-going? Occasionally go for a run after work, do you? I’m sure that’s very hard for you, but if you want to know what it’s like to do a real workout you ought to try Crossfit; the high intensity workout that will really build you up (after it’s knocked you down that is). We spoke to Head Coach Andy at Crossfit SC1 to find out what it’s all about. So, what exactly is Crossfit? “It’s a combination of a whole heap of different fitness regimes combined. It’s basically constantly varied functional movements which are done at high intensity. It’s hard to describe. The best way to know what it is, is to come down and try it yourself!”

What is the aim of it? “To prepare for the unknown and the unknowable. We have all sorts of people coming including fire fighters and the police.” How did you start Crossfit? “I did my first workout in 2011, which left me in bits. That got me hooked.” What can people expect from their first workout? “Expect the unexpected. All of the workouts are scalable to suit the individual dong them.”

T

A Mediterranean Diet

ired of dieting? Yeah, we are too! Why not try just eating healthily like the Mediterraneans? Giulia Smith explains how to do things differently. Just because summer is over there is no excuse to let yourself go and hide under those jumpers. Instead of sticking to the usual diet plans, why not try a typical Mediterranean diet?

Breakfast A bowl of mixed fruit and yoghurt. Pick any fruit you like, trying to include a minimum of two (your five a day should be made up more of vegetables than fruit due to the high sugar content in fruit).

Super Foods: Baked Beans

Beans, beans good for your heart; the more you eat, the healthier you will be” is definitely how the famous rhyme goes. It may seem hard to believe, but the humble baked bean is one of the best superfoods out there. For too long these have remained on the children’s menu, as a healthy substitute to veg, but why aren’t we eating more of them?

The beans themselves also contain carbohydrates which are of the low glycaemic index (GI) type. Foods in this category are digested slowly meaning when they are digested they gradually pump glucose into the bloodstream. This means that your glucose sugar levels rise at a slow and gradual rate, rather than fast. This may help with weight control in the long term!

Baked beans contain iron, protein, calcium and fibre which in simple terms means they provide four of the most important things your body needs to keep healthy. The fibre within the beans is insoluble so it cannot be digested. Instead it travels to the large intestine or colon where through bacteria, which works on it; it produces short-chai fatty acids. These fatty acids have properties which protect the colon from supposed cancer causing intruders getting into your body!

And it’s not just the beans themselves which are good for you; the tomato sauce which covers them contains lycopene, which is a great antioxidant. So next time you have your spud you needn’t feel so bad about filling it with those baked goodies. In fact, it’s probably the best thing you can do for your body!

Lunch A typical healthy Italian lunch consists of a plate of wholemeal pasta and freshly chopped tomatoes. Or if you’re out at work, then make a spinach, mozzarella and tomato sandwich on a brown baguette to take with you.

Dinner For dinner, try a piece of roasted chicken breast followed by a plate of salad with tomato, sweetcorn, lettuce and onion. This is quite a plain meal, but is by no means bland and is perfectly balanced to ensure your body gets all the good stuff it needs. ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue17

ChicAsianLifestyle | Noodle Inn Hot Pot

The First BBQ Hot Plates in the UK!

There’s nothing bizarre about Mughal Bazaar

M

ughal Bazaar is based on the famous White Abbey Road in Bradford. Established in the 1970s this family owned business originally started off making shawls, cardigans and other clothing, gaining them an established and loyal customer base which still exists today. The current owner Waseem Zaffer has been working in the shop for 20 years, taking over the business from his parents.

P

iping hot service straight from China is now available for you to experience in Sheffield. The Noodle Inn, on London Road, is the first restaurant in the UK to have BBQ hot plates for people to cook their own dishes at their tables. The hot pot temperature can get up to 300°C, so if you’re on a date and things aren’t warming up between the two of you, then at least you can rely on the hot plate to keep things sizzling. The plate is completely smokeless so wont interrupt your dining experience. For those of you who are precise with how you like your food cooked, then this is definitely something you should try as you cook a dish until it’s just right. Or if you don’t consider yourself a foodie, it could still be a fun experience and makes the ideal date situation, providing a great talking point for the two of you. Don’t worry if things start getting too hot; staff will prevent you from burning the restaurant down! If you need to cool down from all the excitement at having cooked your food just how you like it, then fear not for this hot pot can cool down to -30°C. In just a few minutes you can make your own ice cream. The hot, now cold, plate deepfreezes more than 30 different flavours of ice cream.

Remember when you were younger and you used to put juice in the freezer to make ice lollies? Well, now you can relive the childhood joy at the Noodle Inn by adding juice, or nearly another liquid you’d like, to the pot and making yourself an ice lolly in a few minutes. This is a popular novelty in restaurants in throughout China, and the Noodle Inn Hot Pot is proud to be the only restaurant in the UK offering this service; the new hot plate service makes it a hot spot indeed. So go grab some friends, and have fun cooking or cooling your own creations! We’ll see you there…

Zaffer has transformed Mughal Bazaar into a fantastic modern store, stocking a range of designers and fabrics with first choice of designs at least 3 or 4 weeks before other stores, making your purchases from Mughal Bazaar the most exclusive. Renowned for its quality, there is an exciting expansion on the horizon into a 10,000 square foot store which will include bridal items, makeup artists and other exciting products and services all under one roof. ChicAsianLifestyle | The Facts About Shisha

The Facts About Shisha Call it hookah, shisha or narghile, but learn the facts before you smoke it!

F

ancy a smoke? With the growing popularity in the UK of shisha cafés, your next smoke might be from a pipe rather than a cigarette. Shisha (or hookah, arghila, narghile) is a large tobacco pipe which passes smoke, which is usually fruit flavoured, through water in the base of the pipe before it is inhaled. Many see this seemingly innocent pastime as a method of relaxation and a way to socialise. This is particularly popular in the Asian community as an alternative to the pub and has, in recent years, become more popular within the wider city. Sitting round a table and smoking shisha is a great way to socialise, there is no doubting that whatsoever. There is something extremely communal about passing the pipe around within a circle of friends and taking a drag each. This is an almost religious act (indeed in some cultures the pipe is used in religious and traditional ceremonies) and a way of connecting with people in a situation which doesn’t involve copious amounts of alcohol. But how much do we really know about the pipe itself? There are many myths which surround it and many people seem ignorant to the harmful effects smoking can have on your body and the true origins of shisha.

The Origins of Shisha

There is much dispute about the actual origins of the pipe. Some stories say that the pipe originated in Turkey, others that it originated in Persia or India after the Europeans brought tobacco to the countries. So which story is true? Well, we don’t actually know what the true story is regarding the pipes origins. We do know, though, that the pipes are now globally popular and most people tend to associate the pipes with the Middle Eastern café culture despite the mystery surrounding their origins.

ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue17

Health Issues

There is a widespread myth that shisha is not as bad for you as cigarettes. Whoever has been propagating this, though, is seriously misinformed. The truth is shisha is not as bad for you as cigarettes, it’s actually worse! Despite popular belief shisha tobacco is no less toxic than that which people smoke on a daily basis. The smoke contains the same toxins as cigarette smoke, meaning you’re inhaling the same chemicals and nicotine you would inhale when having a fag. However, this is combined with some extra toxins which are produced in the coal burning process. A 2007 study on the health risks of smoking shisha suggested that in an average shisha session a smoker would inhale up to 200 times more smoke than if he or she smoked a cigarette instead. The social aspects of shisha mean that the likelihood of continuous smoking is extremely high, which is actually quite frightening given the possible health risks.

Pros & Cons The Cons

• In some cultures it is common for children to share shisha with their parents socially. • 45 minutes after smoking shisha your heart rate increases. • A French study of Parisian school children found that more than half of 16 year olds had tried shisha and a quarter smoked it on a regular basis. • The harsh tobacco flavour which in shisha is conveniently masked by the strong artificial fruit flavouring. • It has been illegal to smoke shisha in an enclosed space in the UK since July 2007! • Long term shisha use can lead to the same cardiovascular problems as smoking. • Sharing a pipe means you run the risk of catching orally infectious diseases.

The Pros • Shisha is a sociable activity bringing together friends and family. • The harsh smell and taste of cigarettes is masked in shisha meaning your clothes don’t smell like smoke. • Shisha doesn’t stain your teeth the way frequent cigarette smoking would. • In some cafés you may be able to get a tobaccofree herb to smoke which doesn’t have the negative health drawbacks that smoking tobacco does. • Smoking shisha has stress relieving qualities. This is why so many people enjoy shisha after a long day!

ChicAsianLifestyle | Arooj Restaurant & Sweets Launch

Arooj Restaurant & Sweets Arooj launches with free food for all! Charlotte Grainger tells us all about the grand opening.

F

ree food for three days? Regardless of how insane it may sound it is exactly what Arooj, Sheffield’s newest Indian and Chinese restaurant, did. For their special three day launch they gave away free food to anyone who happened to book in! We just couldn’t say no to free food (you show me a person who could?) so we popped down to sample some fine Asian cuisine, all in the name of good journalism we’ll have you know! As you might imagine a place giving out free food would be the restaurant was crowded. Of course, we’d had the good sense to book in advance, but others had been less intelligent about the whole affair; turning up unannounced hoping to get seated. They we’re lucky. The restaurant staff quickly found some extra space and seated them, after all, the event was about sharing and enjoying food, not seeing people leave the place hungry.

Luckily for me and my rather large appetite, Arooj had a buffet system going on for this event. The restaurant will usually be serving individual dishes from the menu, a la carte if you will, but so as to give everyone a chance to sample their range of cuisines, Arooj went for the pleasing buffet option for their three day launch. Free food that’s all you can eat? I was in my element.

Whilst many restaurants tend to focus on merely one type of Asian food, specialising in Indian, Chinese or Thai, Arooj had chosen to focus on two; both Chinese and Indian cuisine. This choice was a brave one. It ran the risk of producing two rather inadequate styles of cuisine due to a pure case of over stretching one’s staff. Luckily for Arooj this risk wasn’t realised and instead the two styles seemed perfectly cooked and worked well; complementing each other.

ChicAsianLifestyle | Arooj Restaurant & Sweets Launch

I am not the world’s number one fan of Chinese food. I generally find it greasy, heavy and underspiced. But somehow this spicier version of the much loved cuisine managed to hit the spot perfectly and was light with it. (I even went up for a second helping of the stir fry!) Turning me on to Chinese food was a feat in itself, so I give Arooj ten points for that straight away. I was easier to please on the Indian front however, though my standards are still high. Having grown up in the West Midlands, where there is a curry house on every other corner, I have tasted the good, the bad and the ugly of Indian cuisine. I took a loaded up plate of chickpea curry, which was extremely spicy, and brown rice. I was very impressed with this. The rice was cooked well; light and fluffy, whilst the curry itself was a natural colour (a sign that it was not full of additives and food colouring) and boasted strongly spiced flavours. I finished my dining experience with a bowl of Indian rice pudding; sweet and delicious. This was the perfect thing to cleanse my palate of rich spices. Arooj is now open boasting a wide variety of Asian cuisines.

Have it Asian Homemade Style!

I

f you fancy something a little more authentic, Arooj also offers dishes which are cooked Asian homemade style.

This is an altogether more traditional style of dish and gets its name from the fact that it takes note of how people prepared their food within their own homes. Dishes which are made in this style include: Mixed Taka Tak Tawa Chicken Handi If you would like your food to be prepared in this style then ask your waiter at Arooj and they will ensure your food is cooked to your own specification. The same rules apply if there is a dish you would like which is not on the menu; simply ask your waiter. Remember the age old saying? “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue17

ChicAsianLifestyle | Sukhvinder Javeed

Sukhvinder Javeed

Charlotte Grainger meets the woman who really does have it all; the mind behind Milkysnugz, Sukhvinder Javeed.

We’ve all got a journey. We’ve all got something we want to do inside and it’s the fear of breaking out of the norm that doesn’t allow us to do it.” Sukhvinder Javeed, fulltime Sales Consultant, knows how difficult it can be to step out alone and follow your dream, but she also knows just how worthwhile that journey can be. Sukhvinder flew to china back in 2011 when she began her own journey to design, create, and market her unique brand of baby comforters. The idea came about organically when the mother of two found herself encountering the difficulty that so many mothers do when weaning her children off breastfeeding. “When they were younger we always had issues with breastfeeding and and involving my husband.” Sukhvinder found that her children bottle-fed best when they had a cuddly toy to hold onto for comfort. The soft texture and comfort of the toy simulated the feeling of breastfeeding. That was the light bulb moment when Sukhvinder realised what it is that children crave when taking the bottle for the first time. “I thought, ‘I’m going to invent a new baby comforter. Babies need comfort when feeding.’” she says of the moment. “Milkysnugz evolved from an amalgamation of ideas. I was in the kitchen with my mother and we were discussing it. I was holding a cuddly toy and ended up cutting the top off, which looked terrible but then I knew what I needed to design.”

The process from there on was complex to say the least, but Sukhvinder was adamant that she was to be involved every step of the way. “You don’t realise how many things you have to do. It’s not just having a great product and taking it to market. There are a lot of steps to take before that.” The first of those steps took Sukhvinder to design the basic product which would later become Milkysnugz. Manufacturing the product in the UK was not proving cost effective which took her to a meeting with her lawyer about using Chinese manufacturers. He suggested that if she was really serious about the product and its quality she would have to go to China herself to find the right people for the job. This was an unexpected twist for Sukhvinder but despite a number of other commitments, she decided to take the leap and go. “I cried for four nights when I was in China. I was thinking ‘I’m so far away from home!’” she admits, however the journey was worth it as she was able to make valuable contacts in China and determine who would produce her stock. Sukhvinder spoke to a number of different factory owners and was able to ensure that her products were made in an ethical environment. Back in the UK Sukhvinder saw the product through the extensive EN 71 testing process, ensuring that Milkysnugz would meet all standards. “I wanted to create a product I’d give to my own kids.” she says, which is why the product had to be of only the highest quality. One of the things that was key to the products success was it being machine washable. A concern which was brought to light in the focus groups

was how hygienic the product had to be. This is why Sukhvinder ensured the product was able to be washed and recommends that the product is washed regularly. Milkysnugz saw their official launch at The Baby Show 2012, ExCel London, where the likes of Stacey Solomon, amongst others, were greatly impressed. This is where Sukhvinder realised the true potential her product had for helping people. At the show a mother came up to her who had previously had trouble getting her baby to take to the bottle. Claiming she’d tried everything the woman was sceptical that anything could help her at this point. She was distressed since she was due to go into hospital and was not sure she’d be able to given that her young son was still reliant on her for feeding. “I invented this. I created this. I am a mum. This will work.” reassured Sukhviner and even offered to give a full refund if Milkysnugz didn’t solve the woman’s problem. Later, whilst surfing the net, Sukhvinder came across the same woman’s blog which gushed about her product saying it had reduced her and her husband to tears when it had actually worked. This was an emotional moment for Sukhvinder and the realisation of what her product can do for others spurred her on. Sukhvinder religiously took part in Theo Paphitis’, of Dragon’s Den, Small Business Sunday (#SBS) competition on Twitter, in which Theo chooses six of the best small businesses to retweet. Recently she was successful and was one of the lucky six winning her a page on the SBS website. “I was elated to say the least. When a serial entrepreneur can put his name to your product, that’s when you know it’s really going to happen.” she says. Milkysnugz are currently available on Amazon, but Sukhvinder has plans to get them into a range of mainstream shops. “I want to turn Milkysnugz into a global brand. Bill Gates said that he wanted everyone to have a computer in their home, well I want every baby to have a Milkysnugz in their home.” It seems as though big things are in store for Sukhvinder and she knows it! “Honestly now I only feel scared. Sometimes I’m scared of the success, because I now they’re going to be huge. I know they’re brilliant.” Watch this space. ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue17

This puts people at ease but that’s not the only reason people chose LJS. “Growing up I knew a lot of people who we’re coming into the UK because of problems they had encountered in their native country, whether it was political or religious problems and I think witnessing this is what made me want to work to help people in difficult situations. I think that’s what people relate to. We’re not just people who speak their language; we’re people who understand their situation and what they’ve been through.” says Awrad, who was born in Iraq herself but grew up in Brighton. “There are people, hopefully not too many of them, that do just churn the work out, but we’re not like that. We like to take a more personal approach.” Awrad has also worked in the Immigration field for over 10 years and also trained as a solicitor. Ali and Awrad are not Immigration consultants. They are actually specialist immigration solicitors accredited by the Law Society who have a passion for helping people and, as a result of this, offer extremely competitive rates to their clients. To them this is more than a job, it’s a life choice and what they love doing. Ali himself is a local Yorkshireman who grew up in Sheffield. His father, Qurban Hussain from Firth Park, pushed him back into

education after Ali got married. Unfortunately, his father did not see him graduating as he passed away from a heart attack in 2001. However, this made him more determined to succeed. After attending University where he completed his LLB and his LPC, he got at a job at a local firm in Rotherham where he built up a strong client base. He trained as a caseworker to qualifying as a Solicitor. Ali has worked in the Immigration filed for more than 7 years and has taken many cases to the High Court and Immigration Tribunals. Ali does not shy away from attending hearings himself if he has time, therefore, providing a more personal service from start to finish. The slogan of LJS is, unsurprisingly, “Fighting for Your Rights” and this is something which the company adheres to proudly. Whilst it is of course a business, it is also a place where people can come and discuss their status and their options if they are feeling confused or alone. LJS offer a drop-in session on Tuesday afternoons between 2.00pm and 4.30pm free of charge.

“A lot of people don’t know how to navigate the immigration laws and restrictions. Case law develops over time so it is always worth checking with LJS to see whether they can assist.” explains Ali, “It’s so fast moving. you could have a case today and it could’ve changed tomorrow.” For this reason it is always worth checking with us as to whether you case might have changed. And it’s not just Legal Aid the company offers for asylum work, LJS also help within the local community as well. “We try and put back into the community as well. We’ve had people from local schools come in to do work experience. In the future we would like to develop into other areas aswell. We have a lot of plans.” Watch this space. ChicAsianLifestyle | Eid Festival

Eid at Millhouses Park This year saw the first large scale Eid Festival in Sheffield. Laura Kay investigates!

S

aturday the 10th August saw the first large-scale EID festival in Sheffield held at Millhouses Park. Organised by the Sheffield Heritage foundation, the event promised to ‘bring communities together for a great family day out’ and definitely delivered on those terms. The festival boasted a number of different stalls selling prayer mats, jewellery, clothes and food as well as hosting Sheffield station Radio Ramadhan and several charities raising awareness and making videos of the brand new event.

Giving the whole event a real festival feel for all the family was a stage especially for children which got them up dancing and an area for skateboarding near the stage giving whole families, including young people and teenagers, a range of activities to take part in.

Despite there being a slow start in proceedings due to traffic jams affecting visitors’ ability to actually get to the park; the turnout was eventually estimated to exceed 4,000 which is a real triumph for the organisers. As well as the market and charity stalls, there were various rides available for all ages and a ‘massive stage area’ where they’d set up Anasheed, religious vocal music with the various artists singing in English, Punjabi and Urdu catering for everybody and making sure that all attending felt involved.

ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue17

Chic Magazine’s Shazia Afzal, who attended for the whole day praised the festival, saying that “overall for a first festival it was really good” and that the turnout was incredible with the organisers obviously not anticipating the sheer volume of

people who turned up to celebrate at the free event. Not everybody was there celebrating Eid for religious reasons but they were just there enjoying the festival and the fact that they were all there as part of a wider community. Shaz emphasised that “it was great that you could meet so many people in such a small space...it meant that the 50 or 60 families you might normally meet over Eid were all in one place” and that “it had a really, really sociable feel”. Overall the festival was a huge success. It’s telling of the popularity of the event that the only thing that needs addressing for next year is that it needs a larger space and even more activities to accommodate the volume of people that want to get involved and be a part of the festival and celebrations.

ChicAsianLifestyle| Eid Festival Eid al-Fitr Fact File

H

ow much do you know about Eid al-Fitr? If you’re not Muslim yourself, chances are the answer is very little. As the lesser of the two Eids, you will probably not have heard as much about it as you would have Eid al-Adha. Here are some interesting facts about Eid al-Fitr: • Other names for “Eid al-Fitr” include “The Small Eid” (by comparison to Eid which falls later in the year, “Eid al-Adha” or “The Big Eid”), “The Sweet Festival”, “The Sugar Feast”, “Lesser Eid” and “Feast of Breaking Fast”. • Eid al-Fitr and Ramadan is a month of charity. This is the month when Muslims are most charitable and are encouraged to give to charity and help those in need. • On the day of Eid, Muslims should bathe and wear new clothes, if possible, as part of the ceremony and day. • Special Eid prayers are held on the morning of Eid. Everyone has to pay “a zakatul-fitr-an alms” (a charitable doation) as part of the prayer which goes straight to charity. The prayer is not complete if this is not done. • Eid is not just one day of celebrations, it actually spans across three days with the first day being the most important of the three. • Eid al-Fitr occurs in the first three days of the month of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar.

An Average Eid

How do you imagine an average Eid day to pan out? Contrary to some beliefs Eid is actually a family orientated day in which Muslims visit friends and family and wish them well. It is a day of good food and good company. This is the relief after the long fast of Ramadan and is when the Muslim community comes together to wish one another well and also to help the needy and be charitable. 6.00am Wake up early to prepare for the day. Eid al-Fitr is an exciting day so there is usually no problem with waking up! 8.00am – 9.00am Give money, an “a zakatul-fitr-an alms”, to the poor and then pray for half an hour. The money is the equivalent to a measurement of dates, which would be traditionally given out to the needy during this time. 9.30am Share wishes of kindness to friends and family. This can be done in the Mosque, if the prayer is held there, or from home. It is very important to wish people well in this religious time. 10.00am Eat with the family! Eid al-Fitr culminates in a huge feast. After a month of not eating and fasting it is time to eat, eat, eat. Traditionally dishes are cooked by the women of the house and the family sits down together to enjoy a good meal. 12.00pm Go to peoples’ houses and visit friends and family. Eid is a time of community and, thus, it is important to visit the people in your life. ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue17

It’s a dream come true for fashionista, Tanzeela Khan!

Husband and wife duo Nadim and Tanzeela Khan have teamed up to bring the suave boutique fashion of Pakistan to Sheffield with their store, ‘Fashionista’. Chic Asian Lifestyle caught up with the couple to find out more about their new store.

W

alking into the boutique style store it is plain to see that this is no ordinary clothing outlet. Asian clothing decorates the walls in every colour, boasting luxurious designs in luscious materials. This is something out of the ordinary, a place where the passion is style and this is truly at the heart of the store. The boutique offers a wide range of fashions including designer wear, party wear, formal wear and casual wear. Aside from this the shop also stocks a range of Asian materials, accessories and even bags, all of which are styled to absolute perfection.

barely have time to think about anything else, but for Tanzeela there was always one thing on the mind. Her keen eye for fashion and, in particular, Asian fashion was something that always set her apart from the crowd.

“We wanted to keep it slightly individual by stocking items that nobody else in Sheffield does. The kind of items which we stock are usually only available in Bradford or Manchester meaning people would have to travel to get them.” says Nadim, who little over two and a half weeks ago opened the business with his wife.

Running a business together is no easy feat, though, and sometimes the pressure can be too much. However, there is no danger of this happening with the Khans. “My husband is a big help to me running the business. I couldn’t do it without him!” Tanzeela gushes. There is so much love in the room right now and it is clear to see that the couple are living their dream come true.

It was not so long ago that the couple’s lives were quite different. Nadim previously worked as an engineer for Toshiba, which meant that he travelled the country for work, whilst Tanzeela was herself a nurse before giving that up to look after the couple’s three children. You might think that, with having a family and two full-time jobs the couple would

“Many people would complement my wife on what she was wearing and that’s really how it started.” says Nadim, “Whenever she wanted a new outfit we would have to travel to another city which would work out quite expensive. This is why we decided to open the shop, ‘Fashionista’.”
