Ah, November, probably one of the dullest months of the entire year. You may be sitting there thinking “What happens in November?” but you will always come to the same answer: nothing. Apparently some years ago (erm... in 1605 to be exact) a bunch of men got together and decided to blow up parliament... But that was really no big deal and no one talks about it any more, like ever.

Doc Brown Dan “Doc Brown” Smith, whose name actually came from a childhood taunt he received for being a geek, has, in his time, held down a multitude of professions in his time. Back n the early 2000’s, whilst still under the same stage name, Ben was know as a battle rapper, performing at live events such as Mudlumz. Now, one marriage and two children later, Ben is a screen writer come actor come comedian. Most recently he is known for working with greats such as Ricky Gervais on projects ranging for comedy series to comic songs (see here the hilarious “Equality Street ”). He was recently in Sheffield at the City Hall as part of his UK wide comedy tour “Of Mic and Men” (see review on page 19). Chic Lifestyle Magazine had the pleasure of chatting to him the morning after his Sheffield tour date, whilst he was relaxing by a lake! You’ve been all over the UK for your tour. What’s your favourite city so far? Ah, that ’s a tough one. I had a lot of fun in Bristol. Most of them have been really great. The crowds have been quite fun, quite open minded. There has been a nice mix of ages, different backgrounds, different races. But the highlights have probably been Bristol... and Manchester ’s always fun, I’m going there again tonight. But Sheffield was great, man. I’m still in Sheffield now. I’m sat out at a huge garden by a lake sunbathing. I’m at Kenwood Hall. Did you get a chance to look around Sheffield? I spend some time here back in the day when one of my mates went to university here. I’ve hung out here before. I’ve always liked it. It ’s got a good vibe to it. I mean it ’s got an edge, but I don’t mind that, I’m a Londoner. Nah, I’ve always liked it. And I think culturally too, it ’s on the come up. What is the worst response you’ve ever got to a show? Umm... Probably just complete indifference. I remember playing a gig in Notting Hill, in West London. It was the night after I’d played Wembley (Stadium) with Russell Brand, Paloma Faith, Frankly Boyle and Jimmy Carr and all these massive acts. And I got there and it was a charity thing for Human Rights Lawyers. The guy on before me did a half an hour speech about Human Rights across the world, pretty dark and depressing, and he waked off

and I sort of stumbled on stage to tell people I was going to do some jokes. I felt Horrific. I felt like a monster.

If you could never perform live music again or never perform live comedy again, which would you pick?

Yeah, it probably wasn’t the right scene for you...

Wow... That ’s a hard question. (Long pause.) I think I’d never do live comedy again.

Yeah, and at that same moment a bunch of waiters came out with dinner for ever ybody. It was just hellish. I lasted about five minutes. Oh no, did you just walk off? Yeah I just walked off after five minutes. I just said, you know, “I think it ’d be better if I leave” and one woman said “Yeah, it ’d be best.” That ’s it, job done! (Laughs) How awful! Moving on... Who are your comedy heroes? Probably Ronnie Barker, Chris Barr y, Michael Palin, Stephen Fr y. How do you think the comedy industry differ from the music industry? Should I say, which do you prefer? Ah, comedy by a long shot really. It ’s way more organisd. It ’s so much more professional. You don’t go to the gig and then because it ’s half full the promoter comes to you and says “Oooh, I was expecting twice as many people, so I’m gonna have to give you half the amount of money.” You know, that never happens in comedy. That ’s the kind of thing that happens in music ever y day. What inspires your material? Obviously, your set includes everything and anything. Do you find you ever have a writing block or do you find it quite easy to write new material?

Oh, that’s really sad. Yeah. If you’d ever tried it, you’d know why. I don’t think there’s a harder job than this. What is next for you now? You’re finishing this tour and then? Yeah, finish the tour and then I’m going to start shooting Law and Order with Bradley Walsh. Wow, that’s amazing? Yeah, I can’t wait, man. That is just a great job; acting. It ’s my favourite job and my best job. That’s incredible. When will that be out? Not for a while. Probably next year, late spring. So there’s quite a while to wait. It ’s so great and I didn’t get it just handed to me. I had to audition and beat off the competition of hundreds of other actors. It ’s a big break for me! Oh, well done! Well, thank you so much for talking to us. Good luck with everything.

Interview by Charlotte Grainger

No, it ’s really really really hard. I don’t think there’s anything harder. Of all the things I do creatively, screen writing, song writing, acting, I think the hardest thing is writing new comedy material. Does it just come to you randomly or do you sit down and say to yourself “Now I am going to write”? No, whenever I tr y and do that nothing comes. It just comes from conversations that you have with friends, or something comes up that ’s interesting and funny and you think this is it. Then you tr y it on stage.

Van Groeningen

Felix Van Groeningen

Chic Lifestyle Magazine meets face to face with Belgium’s top director Felix Van Groeningen at the UK premiere of The Broken Circle Breakdown. We managed to speak to Belgium’s biggest director at the Showroom cinema during Sheffield’s Sensoria festival. Didier and Elise fell in love at first sight, their stor y spans seven years as they tr y to come to terms with the reality of their conflicting religious beliefs and the illness of their daughter. The film received a standing ovation and multiple awards from the Berlin film festival and it ’s been submitted as Belgium’s best foreign film for the 2014 Oscars. It’s been entered for the best foreign film at the 2014 Oscars, it’s an amazing achievement in itself but how do you feel about it? It ’s a great feeling. In Belgium it ’s been out for about a year, but in a way it ’s the start of something new. We have an American distributer who feels ver y strongly about it, so we are going to go and hang around in Los Angeles and hopefully make this happen. There is a lot of competition and a lot of factors that come into play but we shall see. What competition did you have this year in Belgium? We had some competition this year, but in terms of critical reception and box office earnings we had the biggest success this year in Belgium.

14

It ’s been a great ride to release this movie. We brought it to Berlin and it went on to win the audience award and we won another award along with it. It ’s just kept growing and it ’s doing well in France at the moment. The soundtrack has become a massive hit also; ever yone in Belgium is listening to Blue Grass thanks to this movie. What drew you towards adapting the original theatre production to the big screen? It ’s a stor y that explores love, loss, religion and the need for religion. It is a real emotional rollercoaster that manages to grab your attention and doesn’t let you go until the final moments. Did you stumble across any serious issues when it came to translating it to the big screen? It was a big task and it took a while to crack it. At one point I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Me and the producer read through the text and we were just blown away. The play was basically just one concert and in between you had parts of their stor y, this one concert was the basic thread of the stor y. The roles look like they must have been very demanding on the actors. Did you have the actors in mind when it came to adapting the script? I never questioned Johan as he performed in the original theatre production and he wrote the original

ChicLifestyleMagazine | www.chiclifestylemagazine.co.uk | Issue56

play, so I knew he was going to play the role of Didier from the beginning. I decided on Veerle after seeing her in the auditions. The performances are very intense and very moving. How many takes did it require to get the final result? Some of the harder scenes took a lot of takes, but sometimes you only need one take. As a director your goal is to move people and to do this you need to move yourself. Sometimes it happens straight away on the first take, and sometimes you need to push people and tr y a lot of things to get people to that emotional state, sometimes it takes twenty takes. The Blue Grass music plays a prominent role in the film but what do you feel it means to the characters? It means a lot. It ’s part of Johan’s way of looking at life but it ’s contradictor y of course because the music is ver y religious yet Johan is an atheist. It ’s almost a meeting point for the two characters Johan and Veerle, despite their differences they come together through the Music. The Broken Circle Breakdown is one of the year’s most powerful and deeply affecting movies, its Belgium’s biggest movie of the year. Sam Barnett

News Sheffield Theatres Commended at UK Theatre Awards One of our most cherished institutes in Sheffield is undoubtedly the theatres. Sheffield Theatres are renowned not just within South Yorkshire, but nationally, as some of the best theatres in the UK which subsequently attract the highest end productions throughout the countr y. This is not mere speculation, though, this is something which has recently been recognised by the rather prestigious UK Theatre Awards in London. This year Sheffield Theatres were honoured with a total of four different titles at the awards themselves. Sheffield Theatres won awards in four different categories; Best New Play, Best Supporting Performance, Best Musical Production

Review:

RAWR! Dinosaurs Zoo hits Sheffield Theatres By Dawn Goodwin Finding something to do with the little ones of a weekend can be something of a nightmare. My two boys are quite obsessed with dinosaurs so, of course, when I saw that Dinosaur Zoo was coming to Sheffield I knew that I absolutely had to get tickets. So on Saturday 19th October I and my two little ones attended the morning showing of Dinosaur Zoo. After we were seated in a theatre packed full of excited whispering children the

and Best Touring Production. “I am thrilled and overwhelmed by our success at the UK Theatre Awards this year. It is wonderful to have received so many nominations. To win in ever y categor y is a testament to the hard work of the whole team at Sheffield Theatres. These awards represent a triumph for our commitment to staging new work and I’m so proud that we can share this success with three brilliant writers – Tim Firth, Mike Bartlett and Simon Beaufov – and ever y cast member and creative team member over the last year!” said Daniel Evans, Artistic Director. The awards are a huge honour since the UK Theatre Awards are the only awards to recognise outstanding achievements in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

show began. I have to say there was a fair bit of explanation before we saw the dinosaurs themselves. This meant that I, unexpected, got a quick lesson in palaeontology whilst my children began to fidget and squirm awaiting the actual show to begin. Soon enough the dinosaurs (i.e. the puppets of dinosaurs, not to ruin the illusion) came out to play. Children were called up onto the stage to play with the puppets. Despite being told (by the host and myself) that the dinosaurs were only puppets my children would not go near he larger dinosaurs at all! I kept telling them “They can’t hurt yo, it ’s all pretend.” and whilst they deep down knew this touching them was not an

option. Still, they had fun with the smaller ones which they petted and played with. For me the highlight was at the end of the show when we were all ushered outside of the Lyceum to see the biggest of all the dinosaurs outside in all its glor y. This show was more than I expected. It was not only a fun day out for my children, who by the way can not stop talking about the dinosaurs and having been bragging to all their friends about having seen some in the flesh (ish), but also a great experience of which I loved ever y single minute. I would recommend this to families and, dare I say it, adults alike.

Eminem – ‘The Marshall Mathers LP 2’ When the multi-award winning American rapper Eminem was announced as one of the main headliners for this year ’s Reading Festival in August I must admit, I wasn’t particularly impressed, probably down to my stubborn certainty that Reading & Leeds should be strictly a rock festival! However, shortly before the performance date, he revealed the imminent release of his eighth studio album entitled ‘The Marshall Mathers EP 2’, thirteen years after the decorated (seven-times-platinum) Marshall Mathers.

Lady Gaga ‘ARTPOP’ For me, Lady Gaga is an artist who is always going to get her spot in the limelight in a chart full of, in my opinion, ver y mediocre R&B/pop singers. Despite her visually provocative (Madonnalike) image, as a previous professional songwriter for other largely successful musicians, you can’t doubt her credentials and you can’t really say that she’s all style over substance. Although I’m personally not a fan of Gaga, the success of previous efforts ‘The Fame’, and the much more rock-influenced ‘Born This Way ’ speak for themselves, which puts

Jack Greenwell reviews

Despite quoting live on ESPN recently that ‘nothing’ interested him about his new album, loyal fans are thoroughly excited for the upcoming record that promises to revisit the style of the original Marshall Mathers LP that had such a popular hardcore hip-hop emphasis.

Ultimate Favourite Album

At forty years old, it seems we know all about the man from Missouri who struggled to deal with the fame, fortune that came with his massive early success (mostly documented through his past few releases, which never reached the spectacular heights of his first efforts). But despite his clear on-camera lack of enthusiasm for this record, I think theres more than meets the eye to Marshall Mathers, and am excited to see if ‘MMLP2’ succeeds in refreshing his fluctuating career.

Another really difficult one, but I’ve always held the ver y first track on the record ‘ Waiting On The World To Change’ above the rest, which is one of the ver y first pieces of John Mayer music I ever heard.

the brand new record entitled ‘Artpop’ in ver y good stead for it ’s November 11th release date. The first single from Artpop is ‘Applause’, released in mid-August this year, which is a loud, anthemic delve into the musical abyss that is what we know the Lady Gaga brand is so typically all about. ‘Artpop’, as described by Gaga herself, is ‘a celebration and a poetic musical journey ’ and shows a ‘lack of maturity and responsibility ’, stating that she wrote it with much more confidence than her previous two records. I’d have thought confidence was the last thing Gaga was lacking, but I guess we’ll see just how much better this sounds because of it.

John Mayer – Continuum

I think my all time favourite album, although its ver y difficult for me to pick just one, is going to be Continuum by John Mayer

Best song on album?

This album reminds me of...

Ever y time I hear this album I think of travelling in the car to see my family in the North East usually late at night and we nearly always play this on the way there. Ashamed to say that on more than more occasion I’ve fallen asleep halfway through it.

Chill Out Album

Ernest Greene – the man behind the pseudonym

There are lot of ‘chill-out ’ albums that I’ve gotten into massively recently. ‘Life of Leisure’ by Washed Out, is only the second EP from Ernest Greene (the man behind the pseudonym) and in my opinion, his best.

Best song on album?

Well there are only six tracks on the EP, but ‘Feel It All Around’ is the one I go to first ever y single time. It ’s so relaxing that a year later, I’m still putting this track on to wake up and go to sleep to!

This album reminds me of...

This record completely reminds me of summertime. When I hear the hazy sound of Washed Out, I picture myself with all my friends by a beach somewhere in the late evening.

ChicLifestyleMagazine | Music “Of Mic and Men”: Doc Brown

Miley Cyrus - She won’t stop Is anyone else tired of hearing about Miley Cyrus? No. Oh, come on, don’t lie. She’s certainly done a good PR job on us, with ever y media talking about her moronic acts at least once a day. This week yet more semi-naked photos of the Hannah Montana star have come out, taken by none other than the wonderfully perverted Terr y Richardson (uh, that ’s creepy “Uncle Terr y ” to aspiring models the world over). My personal favourite picture of this shoot is the snap of her sucking her thumb whilst she uses her other hand to touch herself. If that isn’t a paedophile’s dream then I don’t know what it is and frankly it is disgusting. Especially given the fact that her face has not aged passed her Disney Channel days.

This aside people have to question why she is doing all of this. Is she tr ying to show ever yone just how grown up she is? We’ve all been there shouting at our parents that we are adults now and so we can have sex / take drugs / get drunk if we want to. I personally never posed naked on anything in those days, mainly because I was so self-conscious and body conscious that the idea would have terrified me. If that ’s what she needs to do, though, to prove to herself and the world that she is no longer sweet and innocent Hannah Montana, then who are we to stand in her way? I’m sure she will look back in embarrassment at her actions. And, unfortunately for her, her actions were played out in front of the world. So, in a few years time, she has all of that to deal with. Which is why for now I think we should all back off.... the girl has enough trouble coming her way.

Rapper turned comedian Doc Brown, AKA Dan Smith, took to the stage of Sheffield City Hall last month as part of his UK wide tour. Chic Lifestyle Magazine were there centre front to see the man at what he does best! Here’s a tip for you: sitting front and centre at a comedy show is never ideal, unless, of course, you like to get picked on by a comic and then laughed at by hundreds of audience members. However, when you walk into a venue to find that the only two seats left are on the front row you just have to suck it up. That is exactly what we did. With much ado, a short wait and a voice-over, which was clearly Doc Brown announcing himself backstage, the show began. And what a show it was; part inspirational talks, part comedy set and part Doc Brown jumping around the stage and rapping about cats. Doc started by talking through the facts; he is an ex-rapper who tried to break into the British music scene over ten years ago and now? Now he just about does ever ything else under the sun. After the niceties were out of the way, though, Doc Brown started to get deep on the audience. He started talking about the ridiculous nature of rap music, his wife and kids, how he thought his life would turn out and, arguably most importantly, how he now spends his days staring into his fridge. To describe Doc Brown’s style of comedy is no easy feat. He switched throughout the show between what would probably be considered “street ” talk to middle class English dialogues. He spent periods of the show literally jumping around the stage rapping about how cool he is and other moments sitting on the stage talking to the audience about his life plans.

Midlake – ‘Antiphon’ Hailing from the deep south of Denton, Texas, indie folk-rock band Midlake, inspired by acts such as Bjork and Radiohead, really made their name playing festivals in Europe and the UK alike. The brand of cool, traditional raw folk music that has been so popular especially in this countr y over the past few years, lended itself perfectly to their previous 2010 effort ‘The Courage of Others’. (If you haven’t heard this album before I really do recommend it). However, over the past year or so the band have been through a

transformation that saw their lead vocalist and songwriter Tim Smith depart in pursuit of other musical projects. A slight line-up switch-around later, and Midlake are back in business after some intense writing and a definite change of musical direction for this November ’s highly anticipated ‘Antiphon’. Embracing a much more psychedelic style of music, the departure from folk-rock towards a progressive-rock sound seems the real intention for this band, whose songs are still ver y familiarly told ‘ through the eyes of Midlake’. I’m really excited to hear this follow-up to what was such a great album in ‘The Courage of Others’, and if executed as well as I’m sure they ’re capable of doing, it could propel this band to much, much greater heights.

There was something incredibly genuine about the performance, though. Either this was strategic and acted to perfection, or Doc Brown is genuinely being himself (if an exaggerated caricature of that) when he is up there on stage. There were moments that felt authentic between him and audience and, I can only speak for myself, but coming away from the show I really felt as though I knew the real Doc Brown (or rather Dan Smith). By far the highlights of the show, though, were found in Doc’s unique style of comic rapping. Throughout the set I would anticipate intro music eagerly, since ever y single rap was more entertaining than the last. The closing song, before which Doc announced that he was “half Derren Brown and half Snoop Dog” (sic - we know it ’s Snoop Lion now), was a sort of game between Doc and the audience in which we acted as his “hype men” and guessed the end rhymes of his lines. As it turns out I’m not the sharpest pencil in the pencil case and found myself getting the rhymes about two seconds later than the rest of the audience, however this didn’t matter since I was laughing so hard that I’m sure no one else even noticed.

A Milestone Night As an inhabitant of the lovely but slightly sparse Kelham Island, my choice of restaurants within close walking distance is rather limited. Fortunately one of them is Sheffield’s favourite Gastropub, The Milestone. Loved for it ’s great food, atmosphere and service, my expectations are always high. As can be expected when dining out on a Saturday night, the restaurant was all booked up and buzzing with conversation, wine glasses clinking and lots of raucous laughter. However, none of this affected the great service, before we knew it we were sat down at a candlelit table with two enormous glasses of wine choosing from the great menu.

In the end we went for a delicious smoked mackerel pate spread onto thick homemade toast and heritage tomato and feta salad followed by the best

ever homemade beef burgers, served with bacon, west countr y cheddar in a homemade bun with rough cut fries. It was all beautifully cooked and presented, I don’t believe there is a better burger to be eaten in Sheffield. The only slightly disappointing part of the evening was a rather long wait for dessert, but the waiter apologised profusely, continued to top up our glasses and all was forgiven when we tasted the amazing sticky toffee pudding with walnut ice cream. I can’t recommend The Milestone highly enough for an evening of great food, service and atmosphere. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us and ever ything ran smoothly despite the fact they were training many new staff on a busy Saturday night, which is a credit to the whole team. You’ll leave much happier but much less able to move!

Yankees This was not an average lunchtime. No, today on the menu was marinated pulled pork, smoky spare ribs, Texas hot links sausage and delicious beef brisket. We’d been asked to sample food from Yankee’s brand new BBQ menu. A staple independent restaurant in the Sheffield since 1979, Yankees has always been one of the city ’s favourite eateries. Most recently Mike Freeman has taken the business reigns from his father and is working hard to revamp the beloved business by extended the menu and bringing the taste of the USA right here to the Steel streets. “I go to America a lot, my parents spend a lot of time out there. I’ve been wanting to do it for about two years.” says Mike, who has himself worked in a range of different restaurants spanning from Australia to Leeds. Recently there have been a lot of places purporting to serve real BBQ dishes in Sheffield, however 95% of these places use electric smokers. What makes Yankees different is that all their meat is freshly prepared and seasoned on site, before being cooked in real American

24

ChicLifestyleMagazine | www.chiclifestylemagazine.co.uk | Issue56

style smokers. Sitting in Yankees with Mike we were presented with a range of meaty niceties from the BBQ menu all of which had been cooked in an offset smoker, barbequed over oak, hickor y and apple logs. This means that ever y meat is full of flavour. The spare ribs were juicy and heavily smoked, whilst the pulled pork was marinated and addictive from the first mouthful. Mike explained to us that each meat is locally sourced from a trusted butcher and he himself makes ever y sauce to accompany it. Most interesting was Mike’s spicy sausage, which was thick and tasty complimented by his homemade special BBQ sauce. Mike has the Texas hot links spicy sausage made locally and supplies 16 different spices to the butcher. The sausages are made with beer (Budwiser to be exact) instead of water. “You can’t buy these in the shops,” says Mike, “ they have a really original taste that you can’t find anywhere else.” By the end of the meal I had thoroughly enjoyed Mike’s meas. We would wholeheartedly recommend Yankees’ new menu, of which you will not find anywhere else in the city.

From Cakes to Corks!

Baked Off Very Chocolatey Brownies

These lovely chocolatey brownies are for people with a ver y sweet tooth! I have adapted this much loved recipe to include this Oreo chocolate, which gives it a little crunch and a lift from the intense dark chocolate.

Ingredients

Amanda Perry So this week we launch our alcohol offer at Fancie. What a grueling process one must undertake to be deemed responsible enough to sell alcohol to the general public. We have sat our exams, applied for our license and paid the necessar y fees… and now we are able to offer our customers a glass of wine or beer with their food. It ’s a pretty significant step as it ’s a huge departure from the days of tea and cake at Sharrowvale Road. And so I can’t help reflecting how far Fancie has come as a business. From teacups and cake stands to champagne glasses and 7 course

dinners in five years. It ’s been quite a journey with more than its fair share of bumpy roads and wrong turns, but I’m delighted with what we have today. Flying in the face of the corporate, profit-hungr y food chains, we are offering something we (and our customers) really believe in, and that feels good. Come and join us for ever ything from Breakfast to Afternoon Tea (with a glass of fizz?), Evening meal or of course, just tea & cake…. You can take the cake away from Fancie but you’ll never take us away from our cake. We’ll never forget where we came from!

250g Unsalted Butter 150g Dark Chocolate 100g Cadbur y Oreo Chocolate 4 Eggs 65g Plain Flour 80g Cocoa Powder 1tsp Baking Powder 300g Caster Sugar

Method: • Pre-heat the oven to 180°C and line a 25cm by 20 cm tin with greaseproof paper • In a non-stick pan melt the dark chocolate and butter until smooth • In a separate bowl mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and caster sugar and then stir in the broken up oreo chocolate (or whatever else you want to add!) • Mix in the melted chocolate mixture and the beaten eggs then stir until glossy • Pour evenly into the tin and bake for 2530 mins until a skewer comes out nearly clean, but not entirely or they won’t be squidgy enough • Lick the bowl, obviously. • Leave to cool in the tin for 5-10 minutes before turning onto a cooling rack and serving!

Whisky Files

Let’s learn about whisky! Chris Bamford of Shakespeare’s fame is back to tell us what whiskey we should all be drinking this November to keep us warm in this winter y weather! You’re allowed as much as you like because it ’s nearly Christmas, that ’s a fact. The first whiskey we’re looking at this month is an unusual one because it ’s an American single malt whiskey, which as whiskey experts will know, is ver y rare. Single malts have been produced in America before but ver y small amounts come over to this countr y, so this one is ver y special. Wasmund’s single malt whiskey comes from a distiller y which was only established 13 years ago and unusually the malt is dried over a fire of various fruitwoods and hardwoods rather than peat or coal which are much more common but this way gives it a much more interesting flavour. This whiskey is 48% and will set you back £3.80 for a single. Bargain. The next whiskey is a 1990 single malt from BenRiach distiller y in Speyside, established in 1898 in Moray near the Moray Firth in Inverness. The distiller y was recently taken over by an independent company comprised of two South

Africans and a Scottish whiskey expert after years of being owned by one of the big whiskey companies. This particular version was bottled in July 2012 and finished in port casks to give it a ver y fruity flavour. Because it ’s older, it ’s quite oaky and quite complex. This whiskey is 53.4% and costs £4.50 for a single. Last but not least, we have a 10 year old Bruichladdich standard whiskey from Bruichladdich distiller y which dates back to 1881. This is one of the distilleries which has been owned by some big companies in its time, but at the turn of the millennium it was taken over by an independent company and Jim McEwan, a master distiller and one of the best in the business. However, it ’s recently been reacquired by massive company Remy Cointreau, one of the biggest French spirit companies. This non-chill filtered whiskey has delicious fruity flavours, is quite smooth and ver y drinkable, which at £2.80 for a single is also ver y affordable! This whiskey is 46%. That ’s all for now, catch Chris again next month, and this time with a bit of a surprise. Hint: it ’s clear and rhymes with fin. ChicLifestyleMagazine | www.chiclifestylemagazine.co.uk | Issue56

Instinctive Health: An Urban Oasis My job, like a lot of peoples’, mainly revolves around sitting at my desk hunched over a computer, consuming lots of caffeine. Occasionally though, I get released into the outside world to go and do fun things, and this time it was to go and get a massage at Instinctive Health by Rachael Hibberd. Having been practising for over four years, Rachael describes her massage technique as ‘quite eclectic’ due to varied styles of training and a combination of techniques.

thanks to a combination of being glued to a laptop and bad posture, I’ve got really tense shoulders, a fairly common problem among people with desk jobs. The massage itself was completely relaxing; the environment that Rachael has created is calm and really lovely to be in. As well as feeling drowsy and smelling like a bounty afterwards (she used natural coconut oil), my shoulders felt much less tense and I was much more aware of my posture when I returned to my desk.

Rachael told me that Wednesdays tend to be her busiest day, which I can imagine is because by midweek ever yone feels like they need a de-stress and for that, I cannot recommend a treatment with Rachael more highly. Read all about Rachael and Instinctive Health at: www.instinctivehealth.co.uk Laura Kay

Having never had a massage before I wasn’t really sure what to expect and I was especially flustered having spent about 20 minutes running round Kelham Island tr ying to find the building, but I immediately relaxed upon entering her therapy room. Simply decorated with soft music, cushions and candles, it ’s like a little oasis in the bustling city. All sorts of people with var ying needs visit Rachael, whose treatment options also include Reflexology and pre and ante natal massage. As with all her clients she asked me if there are any specific areas she should focus on. I told her that

Bumps: The Best Pain Relief During Pregnancy Who needs a bit of luxur y in their life more than a pregnant woman? That ’s right, no one. Well, a pregnant woman I am (a 34 weeks gone pregnant woman to be precise) , which is why I decided it was about time to get some luxur y in my life. Having experienced mild aches and pains in the later stage of my pregnancy I was just about getting tired of having to deal with the relentless pain. It was rare that I managed to have a comfortable night sleep by this stage and, quite frankly, I was like the walking dead most days.

was having trouble sleeping due to my upper leg pain and so Hannah said she would aim to work on this area during the massage. I was taken into a room laden with pillows, throws and other niceties. Relaxation music was playing and I was told to lie down whilst Hannah worked her magic. What followed was a soft (let us not forget that there is a baby in my body, making ever y inch of me ver y sensitive) but effective body massage. This was the first time I had relaxed in over a month

The side effects of pregnancy had left me feeling awful. I certainly didn’t want to put anything in my body that could hinder the baby, so that rules out medication and even pain killers. I had previously heard that some pregnant women turned to massage to help relieve their pain, but had never actually tried this approach myself. It was only when the pain got ver y extreme that I decided to tr y a massage from Bumps in Sheffield, which would purportedly help relieve my pain. On entering Bumps I was immediately relaxed. I was greeted by Hannah, one of the owners, who gave me a full consultation, which lasted about thirty minutes. This was a chance for her to get to know me and how my pregnancy had developed so far. I told her that I

and so felt like bliss. I came out of the experience feeling calm and, dare I say it, happy. The proof of the pudding, though, came that evening when I slept through the night, having no aches or pains to keep me up. This was ideal as, let ’s face it, I’m going to need all the rest I can get before little Jasper (yes, we have already named him) arrives. I would recommend Bumps massages to any pregnant women and will definitely be telling all my friends.

Eat Sheffield Awards 2013

There is nothing better than finding Aren’t we lucky in Sheffield? We have some of the best eateries in the entire countr y. Never of an evening are we at a loss for where to go to eat, rather overwhelmed by the extensive array of restaurants that we have right on our doorsteps. The annual Eat Sheffield Awards are a chance to commend some of the great establishments we have in this city. Over the years the awards have grown and are now renowned in the city. It is a great honour to be recognised by the Eat Sheffield Awards and one which local businesses would be privileged to receive. This year there were some great

contenders with the likes of The Milestone, Urban Pantr y Deli, Tamper Coffee, Street Food Chef and The Rutland Arms being nominated for awards. Of course, not ever yone can win… so who made it big this year? For the third year in a row Street Food Chef won an award in the ‘Food To Go’ categor y and rightly so. They certainly serve one of the best take-out burritos in this fine city and are is known amongst Sheffield inhabitants for its spicy jalapenos and refried beans. Controversially Thronebridge Brewer y, a Derbyshire based company, was nominated for ‘Best Sheffield Brand’. Luckily, Moss Valley, a company actually

based in Sheffield won the award. This saved on a lot of complaints, which would have doubtless flooded the awards. The ‘Best Newcomer ’ award went to favourites Tamper Coffee, who have recently expanded to a second property. This was no real surprise and was truly a well-deserved achievement for the coffee shop. The awards, as always, were accompanied by a great set menu and despite the odd jovial rivalr y a good time was had by all. Roll on the Eat Sheffield Awards 2014!

Carrie “reimagined” Gravity Director: Alfonso Cuaron Release date: 8th November In early November, an eagerly anticipated, critically acclaimed film will grace the screens of the UK, Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity ’. George Clooney and Sandra Bullock star in this fascinating stor y about two stranded astronauts who find themselves alone after high speed debris destroyed their shuttle. Written by Cuaron and his son Jonas, ‘Gravity ’ is being tipped for Oscars from Best Actress to Best Director. The film is due to be released in UK

Film Thoughts: Cut the Hype There is nothing better than finding a hidden gem of a film, be it shown late night on TV or found in an old DVD collection, which you would have never expected to enjoy, yet you love from start to finish. This is one of the true pleasures for film lovers, firstly because they enjoy the film itself, but secondly, and more importantly, because they can then boast to friends and prospective lovers about this little known great film that they just happen to be an expert on. I get that. I don’t do that, but I get it, accept it and silently mock the foolish people who do it. That here is the lesser evil I want to write about. The primar y evil is almost the opposite of this. It ’s not about unknown directors or subtitled foreign films, it ’s about massive blockbusters that people (no matter how much you contort your

cinema’s on 8th November, with cinema’s already making preperations to meet with consumer demand, the film looks like it ’s going to easily surpass its $80 million budget. ‘Gravity ’ has all the right ingredients to be a masterpiece. Two A-List stars in main roles, backing by Warner Bro’s, and a confident script. With so much global hype and widespread chatter about this project, it seems like it will be impossible to dislike it. Time will tell whether it can truly compete amongst the great space motion pictures such as 2001: A Space Oddyssey or Silent Running, however one thing I’m certain of is that if theres one movie you should definitely see this month, it should be ‘Gravity ’.

You will hear about it on the radio, on our beloved Lorraine in the morning and spitting from the mouths of friends and foe for months on end. The problem with this film is that once hyped to a mind-boggling level, the film is doomed to failure. Not failure in a record breaking sense, the film is sure to be a massive hit by box office standards, but failure to strike a note of sincerity with its audience. At least with me, I can only speak for myself and many, many would argue the contrar y, I find that I never truly enjoy a hyped up film. I am always sat there expecting it to be bigger, better, the scenes to be more dramatic, the sex scenes to be more graphic and the climax to be higher. But it ’s not. It ’s just a film, albeit a good film, since these hyped up films are usually good, but no more than that. A prime example of this is Inception, a truly average film and concept, which was hyped from day one and is

still mentioned by morons over a drink as though liking the film makes them something of an intellectual. I just recently got round to watching Inception and needless to say I was disappointed. It was okay, but it was by no means a mind-bending philosophical minefield that it had previously been made out to be. Spoiler: It ’s about incepting dreams to gain information from people’s subconscious. That laid down there then follows a whole lot of action (something which always makes me zone out) and not much substance. This is exactly like ever y other film which has been hyped in the media and through communities, they turn out to be a massive disappointed to me. So just for once, no matter how much you love the next big film, don’t tell me about it. If it ’s good I’ll find out myself.

Chloe Moretz stars as the tragic title character in Kimberly Peirce’s update of Stephen King’s novel and Brian De Palma’s 1976 film. Julianne Moore gets the lucky task of playing her psychotic mother. Revolving around the dark and twisted childhood of a teenage social outcast, and the powers she possesses. An unknowingly telekenetic teenager with a mentally unstable and religious mother, what could go wrong? The advance of special effects, sound engineering and stringent camera-work make horrors such as ‘Carrie’ even more distrubing. However, with such an arsenal of tools at Kimberly Peirce’s disposal it will be interesting to see if this remake can compete with De Palma’s 1976 hit.

All Aboard the - Fashion Express We couldn’t resist. We’d received the invite for a fashion show on the tram that afternoon and straight away agreed to attend. What could be more fun than watching a catwalk whilst sitting on one of Sheffield’s best loved transport systems? And, more importantly, how would the models trot up and down the thin aisles of the tram without falling from their six inch heels to their untimely death? We had to attend to find out. On boarding the Fashion Express at Cathedral we soon realised that this would be no ordinar y journey. Four

34

cheek-boned models lent in sultr y posed positions whilst a variety of photographers snapped away. A red carpet had been laid down between the seats; a make-shift catwalk for the day, which was being used by all four models. The fashion show previewed some of this autumn winter 2013 top trends and each model had been expertly styled in themes ranging from Winter Romance to Red Muss to Dark Vigor by the Meadowhall team and Bethanie Lunn, Meadowhall’s Fashion and Beauty Advisor, meaning each one of them looked like pristine dolls.

“The autumn winter collections from London Fashion Week have been electric this year – awash with colour, texture and stand-out combinations, but Sheffield doesn’t always manage to enjoy the buzz experienced by those in the capital. So, as a means to change that, Meadowhall has teamed up with Sheffield Supertram and Sheffield Train Station to bring highlights from this year ’s Fashion Week and a taste of what is on offer at the shopping centre, to Sheffield commuters in the form of the Meadowhall Fashion Express catwalk show!” said Bethanie of the catwalk.

London Fashion Weekend A Little Piece of Wonderland By Queenie Mak

This month we’re colouring in Whilst the days are getting particularly gloomy and depressing, the catwalk is getting colourful. The catwalks of the likes of Michael Kors and J W Anderson have been awash with vibrant blues, reds and yellows. Whatever the weather, block colour is the name of the game this Autumn. Chuck out your dull greys and whites, we knew they were boring all along, and get some colour in your life. As Apple would say this season is “For the colourful.” There is one problem with colourful clothing and that is skin tone. Your skin tone can make all the difference as to whether a colour looks good on you or

makes you look like a washed out sheet. Pale skin tones, perhaps the hardest tones to dress, should opt for colours such as deep red and green, which contrast their natural colouring. Olive skinned people also suit greens ver y well, whilst purples and blues will also serve to enhance their natural features. As a general rule dark to medium skin tones work well with bright colours, and therefore have the pick of this year ’s trend. If you are struggling to find bright fashionable pieces in Sheffield this autumn, here are some of our top picks from the steely streets to get you started.

The runway ’s front row and blank-faced skinny models may portray a less-than approachable image of high fashion shows. However, the London Fashion Weekend, hosted by Vodafone at Somerset House, has a shown a more accessible side to the fashion world. You don’t have to be a professional fashionista to enjoy the weekend, ever yone is welcomed and tickets are available online in advance and at the door. Slightly different from London Fashion week, London fashion weekend targets buyers and consumers, therefore; trend catwalks and exhibitions are more ‘ready-to-wear ’ instead of ‘hautecouture’. Over 120 brands have been shown and exhibited, including the luxur y and high-end ones. Products are sold at a discounted price and catwalks showcase what ’s on sale right there on the day. One of the best parts of the fashion weekend is that you are able to blag a lot of freebies, from cosmetics to hair styling services, unlimited offers of champagne to various flavors of macaroons! The Levis team are caring enough to offer a refreshment session to costumers, letting them have a break from the hustle of finding themselves a pair of jeans that are perfectly customized for their body shape with the help of Levis designers. Popping into the Toni & Guy studio is definitely high on the must-do list at the Fashion Weekend. It offers free trimming and discounted hairstyling services. The Label. M also gave-away free hair care goodie packs which included amazing sea salt spray products. The weekend was more than just about clothes and beauty products, the Canon 360 degree studio was set inside Somerset House, introducing the newest digital photography technologies. Customers were encouraged to tr y out the studio, experiencing what it was like to be a supermodel (or a Kardashian) and pose in front of more than thirty cameras! An exciting experience to end to an amazing weekend.

My Sober Diary Sobriety is not a life choice I would ever opt for. Too much do I enjoy unwinding with a large glass of wine, (gin, or vodka) after a long day. Never did I think I would decide to go sober. I mean, as we all know too well, our sober friends are some of the dullest people who inhabit this here earth. Why would I want to join them?

1

: One day of sobriety was not Day so bad. I drank tea and ate brownies at work. I didn’t for one minute crave wine because, despite popular belief, I am not an alcoholic.

On a bored night way back in September I was scanning my Facebook newsfeed. This is the way in which I receive most of my news from the outside world and also, unsurprisingly, where I learnt about Go Sober for October in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. In a moment of what I can only describe as blind madness I decided that, being bored with the monotony of my ever y day life, this would be a fun and interesting thing to do for a month. Shortly after signing up I remembered that it was, in fact, alcohol which made life fun and interesting and that I’d made a grave mistake. Charlotte Grainger

: This is where things got tricky. I went for Day a meal with my boyfriend, his dad and his dad’s (relatively) new wife. With no wine to lubricate conversation I quickly found myself at a loss for words and tr ying to fill long, awkward gaps in the conversation with anything and ever ything that came to mind.

: Super stressful day Day at work. On the way home I felt as though the chances of my head actually exploding all over the tram were ver y high. In this situation I would usually go and vent to a friend in a pub over a drink. Instead I went home and called up my dad. Lucky him!

11

Day : Friday night. Stayed in because I couldn’t stand the idea of West Street when I was sober.

14 Fourteen Day

: Flying to Valencia, Spain.

(night): Day My ver y good friend, Maria, tries to tempt me into playing a drinking game with her. I have to duck out and she looks at me like I stabbed her kitten in its throat.

16

: Went to a Spanish club... drank Day Coke. Watched Maria kiss two different guys. I think she has a boyfriend... Day

19

: Back to England.

You being ill makes your doggy sad! Have you ever wondered why when you are feeling ill or down, your dog also seems to feel the same way? Well, there may be more to the phrase “man’s best friend” than simply a tired and lazy metaphor for our canine pets. Research from experts at Newcastle University has suggested that the level of empathy felt by our pet dogs may be more than you would expect. “A dog’s physical and emotional dependence on their owner means that their well-being is likely reflect that of their owner and any changes such as the dog being walked less often, perhaps not being fed regularly, or simply demonstrating ‘unhappy ’ behaviour could be an early indicator for families that an older relative needs help.” says Nils Hammerla, Behaviour Imaging Expert. In short this means that as elderly dog owners getting less able to cope with daily life, the dog, having not been fed as often or walked as often, picks up on the physical state of their owner and shows signs of sadness as a result of this. This will hopefully be used in the future as an indicator of when elderly people are being to struggle, so as they can get some help. Aww, there’s a good doggy!

21

: Tonight I had a poetr y workshop Day with some friends. As usual someone brought along a bottle of wine. I smiled as ever yone else got slightly merr y, but on the inside I was cursing them all in my mind.

25

: It ’s not like I miss Day alcohol, but I could really do with something to do!

Thirty One

Day : Halloween is no fun without alcohol. I did not dress up tonight. Instead I watched Dirty Dancing. ‘‘I’ve had the time of my life’’

Take that.

You can also taste the beer during your bathing experience from a separate tap – don’t be tempted to drink from the tub!

We’re constantly faced with reminders about the negative effects certain products can have on our physical and mental health – but are we just using them in the wrong way? Here’s a look at three alternative spa treatments that focus on surprising ingredients to improve our skin and immune system.

Hershey’s Chocolate Spa

Ice Cave - Cryotherapy

Many people’s self-confessed weakness. Now a whole new chocolate experience can be enjoyed, except without any calories. The set of treatments at Hershey ’s spa in the US revolve around the use of chocolate and cocoa, including an edible chocolate face mask. The anti-oxidants in the dark chocolate mask soften and replenish your skin, whilst the smell of cocoa relaxes your senses, ensuring you’ll have a pleasant treatment.

With the unpredictable UK weather it ’s often necessar y to make sure you wrap up to avoid getting ill, so how about facing the unimaginable temperature of 110C-? Finland’s Haikko Spa was the original place to include a ‘cr yotherapy ’ treatment, for extreme spa-ing only. Originally an Japanese innovation in the 1800s, cr yotherapy has been developed into treating maladies such as sleeping disorders, muscle pain and skin problems. Three stages exist in the treatment. Modelling a swimming costume, headgear, mittens and slippers you firstly enter the first chamber at 30C-. The second room drops to 60C- to prepare you for the final treatment room cooled to a whopping 110C-. Depending on the treatment you’re having, guests will stay in here for 1-3 minutes. The short time period ensures that no tissue damage will occur, so the guest only feels the positive results. The cold temperature triggers a release of endorphins; this ‘rush’ influences a positive mental attitude as well as reducing pain.

Beer Bath Alcohol is known to cause dehydration and acts as a depressant, so immersing yourself within the liquid seems like an odd choice to improve your health. The hotel brewer y Chodovar in the Czech Republic however begs to differ, offering both the consumption and remedial of their home brewed beer. A 20 minute soak (either in a single or double ‘couples’ tub) is thought to improve both mental and physical properties. The bath is filled with hot mineral water, beer and grains from the fermentation; the procedure aims to relax muscle tension as well as to act as a deep conditioner for both hair and skin in the rural ambience. The bath is followed by a 20 minute ‘cool down’ session wrapped in a sheet within a separate room. This gives the body a chance to slow down after the heat of the bath, so that your body energy is renewed. The relaxation induces positive thoughts and feeling as your mind disengages and your body has renewed. www.chodovar.cz

Superfoods: Blueberries Some nutritionists believe that if you were only to make one change to your diet, it should be to add blueberries. So why are they so beneficial? Here’s why you should be popping some of these berries in your shopping basket. Blueberries contain antioxidants which keep the skin looking younger for longer by helping the body to make collagen. Who knew that just by eating a handful of berries a day, you could keep your skin looking young and gorgeous? Time to ditch those expensive face creams! Not only are blueberries good for the skin, but they also help to prevent an entire catalogue of diseases. The blue hue of the skin is caused by flavonoids, which help to preserve memor y function and reduce your risk of developing

Alzheimer ’s. Other flavonoids protect against cancer and the antioxidants help fight heart disease, asthma and arthritis. Not only can these berries keep you looking youthful, but they can also make you smarter. Studies have shown that eating just 100g of blueberries a day can stimulate the growth of plenty of new brain cells and slow down mental ageing. These tiny berries pack a huge punch of antioxidants and are worth introducing to your diet. Tr y sprinkling a handful over porridge or yoghurt, or even bake them in muffins for a tasty yet nutritional treat.

The Single Girl on Online Dating

I took my first few steps back into the dating world this month by joining the free online match-making website Plenty of Fish (POF). It claims to be the world’s largest dating website, with over two million people using POF ever y day. It didn’t take me too long to create my profile and fill in my details. However, it took a little while longer to decide on a suitable profile picture that said I was friendly-but-not-desperate. The next morning I checked my account to find 15 new messages in my inbox. I’d achieved more date invitations in 12 hours than I had in 12 months. Looking through the emails I’d been sent, I soon realised the guys on this site were not messing around. They got straight to the point, with one keen bean messaging me simply saying: “Date tonight, Brazilian restaurant in town?” No polite how are you, no tr ying to get to know me, just diving straight in with the killer question. The thing is I didn’t seem to mind, in

fact it was quite flattering. Even the messages from those who had two teeth and abbreviated ever y word were all rather nice about it. Browsing around the website I became quite hooked, excuse the fishing pun. It began to feel as though I was online shopping, but instead of looking for an outfit I was searching for a date. Soon a cute guy messaged me and after a few back-and-forth emails, we decided to take it to the next level and add each other on Facebook. We got on quite well and so arranged to meet in a few days’ time at a pizza restaurant. Immediately the butterflies attacked and my nerves kicked in, I actually had a date. But just what was I supposed to do now? What was I meant to wear, to say? Ultimately though date-day arrived and to help keep my calm I ran through a list of topics I had planned to talk about. However what I hadn’t got round to planning was how we were going to greet

The Worst First

1. Little Things – One Direction ‘You never want to know how much you weigh, you still have to squeeze into your jeans, but you’re still perfect to me’. Seriously. 2. We Found Love – Rihanna Ft. Calvin Harris Only acceptable if you fully embrace the song and ‘do a Rihanna’, i.e dance in a perspex box covered in neon paint. A classy and elegant choice. 3. Diamonds – Rihanna One of the more romantic songs referencing ‘molly ’; it could have been Miley Cyrus so at least there’s that 4. Kiss Me – Ed Sheeran Ed Sheeran is the worst. That ’s all. I’ve Had the Time of my Life – Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes 5. People will watch this intently only to see if you pull off the lift which is impressive, otherwise you are two grown adults dancing in front of a room of adults to the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Come on guys.

(Dances) Laura Kay

Personally, the idea of a first dance where you and your newly-wed take to the makeshift dancefloor and awkwardly slow dance as if you’re at a year six disco is almost enough to put me off a wedding altogether. I get that for some it is a fair ytale moment but for many it ’s something that strikes fear and cringe deep in their heart. A recent list compiled of the ten most common songs for first dances backs up my theor y that although, when done well and imaginitively, first dances can be pretty good, the majority just make people look at the floor and put their hands over their ears until they ’re over and real life resumes. I have picked five highlights (lowlights) for analysis.

each other. He went in with a hug. I went in with a formal handshake. As you can imagine, things got a bit awkward. Luckily we managed to laugh it off and the rest of date went, actually, surprisingly well. There were a few hideous stretches of silence as both of us desperately tried to think of another question to ask each other. But overall, he was a regular guy who since finishing university had found it hard to meet girls back home. We swapped numbers and said we’d keep in contact but even if nothing comes of it, I don’t mind. I’m just pleased I gripped the fish by the fins and discovered that online dating websites should not be so quickly shunned. If it doesn’t work out the first time, as the saying goes, there’s plenty more fish in the sea. Jenny Dempster

Moor Markets

Something which has for a long time been a cause of embarrassment in Sheffield is the rather measly and (for lack of a better word) unhygienic looking markets. As the fourth largest city in the UK you’d think that we would have a bustling market selling fresh produce and attracting the attention this city so much deserves. Well, it just so happens that this November we are getting a brand new market. The Moor Markets were initially going to open on 25th November, however due to traders needing more time to prep up for the big event. The council have invested

a mind-blowing £18 million into this new project, which will need 10,000 people to visit per week so as to sustain itself! Dubbed by the management as “A place for ever ybody in Sheffield”, the Moor Markets will be home to a host of new specialist retailers, offering ever ything from ice cream to Russian food to cured meats and cheeses to handmade jams and preserves. In total there will be about 190 stalls, including a dedicated meat and fish section (yum), and twelve cafes and food outlets over a massive 79,000 square feet! The rumours are true, around two thirds

single “Can We Dance” hit the UK top ten earlier this year, supported by X-Factor favourites Union J and Little Nikki. Previous years have seen huge stars such as The Wanted,Olly Murs, Eliza Doolittle and Alesha Dixon perform and all proceeds go to The Children’s Hospital Charity and Help a Capital Child making it one of South Yorkshire’s biggest charity events. Further announcements of the latest acts to sign up will be confirmed via Facebook and Twitter. Simply follow Meadowhall online to find out more. Christmas opening times from Monday 28th October: Weekdays 10am-10pm Saturday 9am-8pm Sunday 11am-5pm

It ’s almost that time again, the red Starbucks cups will be out, Slade and The Pogues will dominated the airwaves and people will start to think that wearing disgustingly tacky jumpers is en vogue. You guessed it! It ’s the run up to Christmas. One of the most Christmas-y events to come to Sheffield this November is the lights turn on at Meadowhall. Meadowhall have announced that the first act at their annual light switch on is up and coming indie band The Vamps whose first

Sports in Sheffield Safe Once Again For a while there there was a genuine fear that athletes, such as Jess Ennis, would no longer be able to train in Sheffield. The closure plans for Don Valley Stadium got tongues across the city wagging, mostly in anger at the fact that there would be no where for elite athletes to train in the city. The importance of this was only further emphasised by last year ’s Olympics and in the wake of that a stadium closure was not likely to be a favourable option. Don Valley will still close. Unfortunately

that battle is lost. However, there is some good news on the subject since Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Hallam University have just signed a deal to make the new home of Sheffield sport the city ’s Woodburn Road Stadium. The stadium, which will be renamed the Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium, has been newly refurbished and will be used by such elite athletes as Jess Ennis and the Hallamshire Harriers. Of course, the stadium will also be used by Sheffield Hallam students on a day to day basis, but will also be open to community groups and groups which were formerly based at Don Valley Stadium. The facilities at the stadium will be brought to the highest standards

of the new markets will be made up of the old market stalls (originally at Castle Market) which have been transferred over to the Moor. One of the most exciting new stalls, though, is Beer Central, a new beer stall selling over 400 different beers from across the UK. But, the question on ever yone’s lips has to be , will it work? Will it not just be a revamped version of Castle Market? And, if so, does that not mean that it will fail in the same way Castle Market did? Well, only time will tell.

meaning the stadium will have new flood lights, stadium seating, track improvements, repairs to fencing and renovation of the grass ‘infield’. “I am really delighted that athletics not only has a sustainable future in the city but also that for the first time in many years the council can invest in developing athletics programmes. Not only will the stadium offer dedicated first class training facilities, it will also host a range of school, club and city events. What ’s more the public will be able to access the stadium on a pay and play basis and athletics has been guaranteed priority use of the facilities.” said Councillor Isobel Bowler, Sport and Leisure.

The Winters Tale

Just under three and a half hours of Shakespeare. That is what I had let myself in for. On reading this the two thoughts which crossed my mind were “Aren’t plays shorter than that?” and “ Well, perhaps I can sneak out in the interval.” It took me around twenty minutes of the play starting to get passed the language barrier. I am not quite as fluent in Shakespearean English as you would expect an English Literature graduate to be and I spent much of the first scene squinting my eyes in hopes that this will aid my understanding of the play. It didn’t. Once I got into it, though, The Winter ’s Tale turned out to be filled with drama and intrigue. As my dad put it, it had as much drama as “an episode of Eastenders.” In short the stor y sees one king, Leonte, feud with another king, Polixenes, over the supposed (but not actual) infidelity of Leonte’s wife, Hermione, with Polixenes. This causes Leonte to imprison his pregnant wife, Hermione, and once his baby is born banish her to another land to live as

Daytona Before I went to see Daytona I admit that I had only skimmed the synopsis, and was far more excited about seeing Harr y Shearer of Simpsons fame, the voice of Ned Flanders, Principle Skinner and Reverand Lovejoy than I was about seeing the actual play. However as soon as I set foot in the beautiful Lyceum Theatre and saw the fantastic set, I was immediately drawn into the world of 1980’s Brooklyn and the play completely absorbed me for the next two hours. With just three characters, played by Harr y Shearer, John Bowe and the always incredible, Maureen Lipman the play is made up of two long scenes seamlessly describing the events between the past couple of days and the past 50 years to unravel the mysterious plot filled with intrigue, sadness and moral dilemma. The script is perfect; funny, engaging and poignant. It takes a lot to keep an entire audience totally fixated on a static set

a shepherd’s daughter. Meanwhile, Hermione stands trial which is stopped when the news of the couple’s first son has died. Hermione faints and dies at the news. Dramatic, no? And that ’s merely Act One. Act Two picks up on the couple’s daughter, Perdita, living as a shepherd’s daughter in a land which just happens to be governed by King Polixenes. Perdita has, by sheer coincidence, fell in love with Polixenes’ son. Polixenes tells her outright that she is not good enough to marr y into royalty. The young couple then flee to the land governed by King Leonte, who greets them with open arms proclaiming them a beautiful couple. All is well for all of five minutes before news reaches Leonte that Perdita is but a shepherd’s daughter. Shortly after, in a scene unseen and only narrated by minor characters, the two kings come together, all is reconciled. Ever yone realises that Perdita is in fact royal and the couple are to be married. Then in a weird twist Hermione comes back to life, Snow White style. And, scene.

I can’t say I wasn’t dragged whole heartedly into the drama. I can’t say that there weren’t moments when I laughed. I can’t say that I didn’t get emotionally involved when I thought that poor Perdita wouldn’t get her man in the end. All of those things happened to me. By far the show stealing actress was the rather brilliant Barbara Marten, who played Paulina, a woman who pleas with Leonte to say his wife and daughter. Her passionate speeches and fiesty acting were something of a soap opera dream. Whilst the highlight moments, for me, were the lovers’ speech, which was far more OTT than any final Rom Com speech, followed by an extremely camp musical number and quite honestly the oddest folk style dancing I have ever seen. All this set against the backdrop of a giant sheep head and I was sold. I would strongly recommend seeing this production, if only for that. The Winters Tale at The Crucible

with lengthy dialogue but that ’s exactly what they did, ever yone remained completely captured by the stor y. Written by London playwright Oliver Cotton, the title Daytona was used because it contained both the word ‘day ’ and part of the word ‘atonement ’, a key theme in the play which Oliver Cotton describes as an exploration of the ‘conflict between our gut level urge to avenge injustice and our more considered ideas about how a humane society should behave’. This play far exceeded all my expectations and was intelligent, touching and witty. If you get a chance to see this play then go, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Daytona at The Lyceum

Tim Tests It: French Fancies By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist

Tim’s Top Tips For Buying A New Car Buying the latest 63 plate means you’ll get a manufacturer-backed warranty; you won’t have to face an MOT test for three years and you might be able to gain from special offers on servicing packages. On the other hand, there are downsides to steer clear of. Concealed extras can bring unpleasant surprises, and speedy depreciation means that an up-to-the-minute motor comes at a price. Here are my top tips if you’re getting in the mood for a brand new car purchase: Budget with care: • Aim to keep a new vehicle for at least three years to smooth out the cost of rapid early depreciation • Make sure your budget includes insurance and road tax • If you need to borrow cash, shop around for a loan before visiting the dealer. It ’ll be cheaper than a finance package.

Citroën DS3 DSport

Peugeot 2008

Citroën keeps getting more inventive and, this year, the French automaker launched an exciting range of DS3 Red special editions.

The 2008 is an Urban Crossover based on the 208 supermini. It drives like a sporty hatch, and even has the same ‘shirt-button’ steering wheel the 208 has. It sticks to the road like burnt eggs to a pan, and it ’s punchy – especially in 1.6 e-HDi 115 ‘Feline’ guise.

The new models are based on DS3’s existing DStyle and DSport trim levels, with sexy styling cues and extra standard equipment. Matching the exterior body colour chosen by you, the DSport Red comes with striking black 17-inch ‘Bellone’ alloys wheels, which come complete with ‘Sport Red’ centre caps. The car has gobbets of gadgetr y and gear shoehorned into it. Kit includes automatic headlights and wipers, rear parking sensors, electric heated and folding door mirrors, an electro chrome rear view mirror, interior mood lighting and a front central armrest. Phew! All DSport Red versions are also specified, as standard, with Bluetooth®, USB connectivity and an enhanced Hi-Fi system for top-notch sound quality. The snazzy pocket-rocket is powered by a THP 155 petrol engine, with a six-speed manual gearbox. This means one thing: clout. The 1.6 multi point electronic, turbocharged lump will propel the car from 0-62mph in just 7.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 133mph. It all makes for an exhilarating driving experience – and one that doesn’t cause you to dig too deep. The DSport Red can be yours for under £18,000; not bad if speed and standing out from the crowd floats your boat.

The 115 horses under the oil-burner ’s bonnet take the Crossover to 117 mph and 0-62 mph comes in 10.4 seconds. But those figures get blown out of the water when you look at the fuel consumption figures. If you combine urban and out of town driving, you could average up to 70.6 mpg. Inside, the flagship ‘Feline’ model has all the trimmings. The car ’s supportive seats have a leather-effect look, whilst the satin chrome door handles stand out under the blue light emanating from the dashboard and the sunroof recess. The car ’s trump card is its ‘Grip Control’ dial. It gives you a choice of traction for the sort of weather and terrain you’re heading into. You can decide to select from standard mode to: snow, off-road, sand or ESP-off. This last option allows you the freedom to control the grip independently. All things considered, it ’s no surprise that demand for the 2008 is already as stratospheric as the 208, which has secured over 35,000 UK orders during its first full year.

Watch out for hidden extras: • Ensure the price-tag includes deliver y charges and number plates • Confirm any special features or extras you want are included in the cost. If you’re part–exchanging, price your car sensibly: • Get clued up about your car ’s value, based on its age, condition and mileage • Concentrate on the ‘cost to change’ – if you negotiate a good reduction on a new vehicle, you’re unlikely to get a generous trade–in for your old motor • You should be able to get more for the car by selling privately but that can be timeconsuming compared with the ease of driving to the dealer and motoring away in the new one. • Be war y of minimum trade–in promotions. They might look desirable, but may only be obtainable if you take the dealer ’s finance package. Negotiate: • Many car dealers will have allowed for bartering in agreeing a price • Remember your budget though – don’t get carried away. Agree collection or delivery: • Don’t hand over cash until you’re satisfied with the collection or deliver y arrangements • Tr y to plan the handover of the new car when the dealer ’s not too busy. They can then put aside enough time to help get you acquainted with controls and any set-up required. Familiarise yourself with the warranty conditions before you sign: • You may need to fork-out for regular checks done to ensure the long-term anti-corrosion warranty remains valid • Automakers can’t insist that you get the car serviced by a franchise dealer during the warranty period but you must still get it serviced according to the manufacturer ’s recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts. You’ll have to keep records so you can demonstrate servicing was undertaken properly • It ’s worth bearing in mind that if anything goes wrong after the warranty expires, a manufacturer is more likely to show goodwill towards any claim if the car has been serviced by one of their dealers • Don’t be coerced into buying. Walk away if you’re not absolutely happy.

W

indy, despite cruel rumour, is one thing that Chicago rarely is. It is rather, a glittering metropolis of holiday heaven that has fallen prey to the apathy of those who choose to fawn over its extrovert younger brother, New York. Consider this the more reserved older sibling who becomes mysteriously attractive after you accidentally encounter them in the hallway. It has upwards of 7, 000 restaurants, a stunning skyline of

many a movie establishing shot fame, and a beach directly beneath the shadows of the skyscrapers. Chicago produced the likes of Ernest Hemingway, the zip and the brownie and if that isn’t enough to convince you as to the genius and delectability of America’s ‘Second’ City, then read on to be further convinced.

Hotel SAX

A

ny hotel adjacent to the House of Blues is destined to be achingly cool, and the Hotel Sax is as smooth as it sounds. The decor has a heavy, old school glamour feel that is at once ostentatious and yet relaxingly luxurious. Art deco chandeliers and marble contrast with the modern views of Chicago’s river that can be seen through floor-to-ceiling windows to create a real feeling of comfort and privilege. The Magnificent (shopping) Mile is within walking distance, as is the theatre district and the exciting nightlife.

Food

C

hicago is really rather famous for its pizza. Forget questionable branding in the frozen pizza aisle and think queues of hip young things round the block at opening time and gut-busting deep dish recipes that are more akin to pies. Burt’s Place is a local favourite with it’s cute awning and log wood look front. The best known pizza chef in Chicago, Burt Katz is inventor of the caramelised crust and is so iconic that a slice of his pie appeared on the Chicago edition of Saveur magazine. Now that’s notoriety.

Bar

T

hey claim to have the ‘most spectacular views in all of Chicago’ and there doesn’t appear to be a lot of resistance. The J Parker, which sits atop the Hotel Lincoln, boasts one hundred and forty outside seats with unobstructed views of the astonishingly large Lake Michigan (so big, it has a horizon…) Award winning chef, Paul Virant offers small plates while the two working bars (one in and one out) churn out fabulous cocktails, wine, beer and champagne. Looking over the water, you’ll forget you’re in a city…until you look the other way.

Culture

T

he Field Museum, you’ll be relieved to hear, is not a dedicated to areas of open grassy land. Instead in this beautiful columned building, which has been a museum almost as long as Chicago has been a city, houses an amazing 4.6 billion years of history. It’s in-house dinosaur, Sue (yes, really) is the ‘largest, most complete, and best preserved’ Tyrannosaurus Rex on Earth, is on permanent display, and guards the lobby to true, wondered discovery.

British Break: York

Brimming with stunning historical buildings, bustling streets filled with boutique shops and cafes and lots of open, green spaces, there is no doubt that York is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. With loads to do ranging from endless museums, spas, shopping and first class restaurants, it should be top of your winter city break list.

Guy Fawkes Inn

Y

ork is a treasure trove of boutique hotels and the Guy Fawkes Hotel, built on the spot where the notorious plotter himself was born, is one of its best. This is the perfect place to stay for people who like their hotels to have plenty of character and charm. The beautiful rooms maintain their own historical character, each one decorated differently and downstairs you can eat delicious, homemade food and drink local real ale. From only £89 a night for a double room, this hotel in its city centre location, next to York Minster is an ideal to base yourself for your break in York.

House of Trembling Madness

T

here are parts of this pub which have been standing since 1180ad, the first Norman house to be built in York. However, the period it feels stuck in today is very definitely medieval. Walking up the creaky stairs you enter the world of the old tavern with low ceilings, walls covered in mounted animal heads and wonderfully mismatched wooden tables and benches. This is the place to visit for a truly different dining experience, with a great, locally sourced menu and a huge range of craft beers and ales.

Betty’s Tea Rooms

I

n the heart of York, Betty’s Tea Rooms is an institution instantly recognisable by the huge queue winding out of the door and onto the street. Especially famous for its incredible traditional, afternoon teas, they also do amazing breakfasts and lunches and main meals, including an especially good fish and chips. You can usually miss the worst of the queues for Bettys by avoiding peak times, especially weekends and school holidays. However, we can absolutely guarantee you that it is worth the wait for the beautiful surroundings.

How Happy Are You? Jack Greenwell It ’s a question we all seem to be asked on a daily basis, whether it be our friends, colleagues, or family, and it seems we’re getting a bit sick of hearing it if you listen to the controversial Office of National Statistics’ annual ‘happiness survey ’. Last year, the government recorded that one in four Brits were reported to be experiencing a less than adequate level of life satisfaction (that ’s not counting the percentage of the teen-aged and retired population having the unemployed time of their lives). It turns out there are quite a lot of factors that actually do contribute to a person’s feeling of well-being and quality of life, but government statistics are one thing. What if we were to look at happiness differently? Introducing the eccentric, Austrian design guru, Stefan Sagmeister. His work has taken him right across the world, in a career spanning 35 years; the most recent of which is an intensive study into people’s happiness. He has designed an exhibition in Los Angeles around his findings entitled ‘The Happy Show ’, and speaking at the AGI Open Design Conference at London’s Barbican Centre last week, Sagmeister presented them in an hour-long talk.

results. Sagmeister states that overall happiness in a relationship for example, is entirely determined by the intentions of the participants. A ver y passionate relationship after around six months, is likely to end, but if people are looking for ‘companionship’ overall, the chances of things lasting are boosted exponentially. All great stuff right, but what if we’re not in a relationship? And what can we do to make ourselves genuinely happier? Well it seems he has found an answer to this too. According to the Austrian, broken down to its ver y basics, our happiness is 10% our state of life, 50% genetics, and 40% doing new activities. So as we’re unable to change ourselves genetically (yet), repetitive activities could be the ver y thing that is making one quarter of us so utterly fed up. So what advice does he give? Set yourself a goal for the next month. Tr y and achieve it. Then tr y something else, and enjoy it! Oh and don’t wait for fate. Make sure to make the first move. That way we’ll all be happily shacked up in time for next year ’s government survey.

Amongst the mass of really fascinating, surprising and in some cases shocking information revealed about our planet ’s happy habits, there were some threads of data uncovered that appeared to suggest why we may at times, feel like we don’t live happy lives. ‘Types of Love’ was a study that brought about some real, thought-provoking

You’re so Vain You Probably Think this Post is About You Laura Kay How many likes did your latest Facebook status get? Come on, don’t pretend you don’t know how many peopled liked your ‘ woo, two weeks in the sun’ check in at the airport. If you didn’t care you wouldn’t have taken the time to make a public announcement that you’re going on holiday. In fact what is Facebook for if not to boast about yourself and make your life look amazing? It is, in a way like your own personal PR campaign making you, in your little Facebook world, a social media celebrity. Recent psychological research has shown that using Facebook has made us more vain which is not hard to believe. The central tools of Facebook are writing

statuses about your life or uploading photos of yourself for your ‘ friends’ to ‘like’ and comment on. It ’s this part of Facebook which researchers claim is addictive, the little rush we get when someone says something nice about our profile picture or when we get loads of likes on a status. We can pretend that we don’t care, but if we didn’t then we wouldn’t continually post about our lives. Facebook allows us to project a certain image of ourselves, editing out all the bits we’d rather hide and building on things like the number of friends we have as a way to measure how important or popular you are compared to other people. In turn, other people judge us based on these things, literally ever ybody is guilty of Facebook stalking and making snap judgements based on a few minutes looking at a profile of carefully selected words and photos. So think, after a Facebook stalking session, how honest and well rounded is your profile? Does it just project your good side (figuratively and literally?) So is theirs, whether we like it or not, Facebook preys on our vainest tendencies and we secretly love it.

Violent video games don’t lead to bad behaviour Sam Barnett Video games are regularly publicised as being a negative influence on society, and in some extreme instances they have been directly blamed for acts of violence between young males. The eternally controversial and eagerly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto 5 has arrived in the UK and its broken ever y record available making it the highest selling piece of media of all time, if the Jaded Journalists and illinformed politicians have been right all along, we might have a hoard of blood thirsty teenagers to deal with in the coming week. Previous studies have suggested that video games encourage violent behaviour through positive reinforcement. Ferguson and Olson have conducted some fresh research into the effects violent videogames have on society, it ’s a particularly relevant time as there is an on-going debate as to whether video games fuel behavioural aggression and violence within society. Ferguson and Olson studied 377 American children from various backgrounds. The results suggest that video games might be a calming influence on young teenagers, particularly those with attention deficit disorder or traits of depression, it ’s been discovered that videogames actually decrease violent tendencies by instilling a sense of catharsis during gameplay, this could go on to reduce and relieve aggressive tendencies and violent behaviour between young people. Video games being a fairly recent medium of entertainment have been and will continue to be used as a scape goat in the media for deeper societal issues, but it ’s always reassuring to hear that we don’t have an epidemic on our hands.

ChicAsianLifestyle | Interview

Taz - StereoNation

Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine talks fusion with Taz - StereoNation Taz Stereo Nation, AKA Tarsame Singh Saini, is something of a legend in the Asian music scene. Hailing from the somewhat beautiful lands of Coventr y the British singer has been a household name since the late eighties after the release of his debut album “Hit the Deck” in 1989. This is generally acknowledged as the birth of East meets West fusion music, something which Taz is extremely proud of given it ’s relevance in today ’s music scene. Since then Taz has released multiple albums, remixes and even worked in the film industr y. Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine speaks to the man himself about fusion music, the future and wanting to collaborate with Beyonce. How do you think your music has changed over time? From old school Bhangra to what it is now? I mean look, I kind of pioneered the sound of fusion, so what you hear today is that. I’m ver y proud to say that it ’s something I created back in the late eighties. So it ’s lovely to be able to see people embracing that sound because I’l never forget the day when I first released “Hit the Deck”, my first album. Because remember I was known AKA Johnny Z and I was, you know, pretty much told off for it and I had ever ybody after me who wasn’t into fusing East and West. The people used to say “Oh, you’ve bastardised Asian music.” So, having been through all that stuff, and believing in my music

18

ChicAsianLifestyle | www.asianchic.co.uk | Issue19

and believing in what I did, it ’s nice to be able to say today from Bollywood to ever ybody under the sun whose making Asian music have embraced the sound of fusion, which is what I was all about. Not just fusion musically, but also bi-lingual. I sing in many different languages, so it ’s fantastic. How have you found the support in the UK compared to America and where you are now in Mumbai? The thing is I think your support is... Your carriers really are your fans. And I have to say that, because I am celebrating 25 years this year, so if it wasn’t for the fans I don’t think I’d be here. I’ve always believed in my fans, but they ’ve believed in me and there’s this ver y close relationship. I do listen to a lot of what the fans have to say as well. If they say “Oh, can we have another one of these?” or “Can we do something like this?” It ’s ver y important to understand your fans are the people who are responsible for why you’re in front of a camera. If there was one classical Indian song that you would remix what would it be? I’d love to say Kabhie Kabhie, which is one of my favourite songs. But you know I’ve done remakes of many songs. One thing I wouldn’t touch is any of the songs from the film Sholay, because it ’s just not possible to top something like that. You wouldn’t even think about it, as a creator, as a writer, as a composer myself, there are certain things and creations made by legends that you just can’t repeat.

Michael Jackson being one of them, you know? If you could collaborate with anyone now, who would you collaborate with? If I could collaborate with anybody now I guess it would be Beyonce. I think she’s an absolutely amazing artist. Other than that I think my daughter, Serena, she’s an amazing singer and a pianist as well. Where do you see yourself in five years time? Again, my journey has been a rollercoaster ride and I’ve had a fantastic experience and, you know, God’s been on my side. What I would say to you is that as far as what ’s ahead and what ’s yet to come I don’t have a clue. But the one thing I do know is that I sincerely continue the journey, with all sincerity. I’m working on a lot of stuff at the moment. I mean, I’m just off to New York right now because I’m releasing my first American single with the infamous DJ UNC. It ’s called “Have a Toast ”. I’ve just done a collaboration with a famous reggae star, Chaos, that ’s coming out as well. Apart from that I’m putting the final touches to my masterpiece for the next album. I haven’t titled it yet so it ’ll be interesting what we’re gonna call it, but I’m really excited about the times ahead. I’m a music directing a Bollywood gangster film and I’m doing a couple of Punjabi films. I don’t know. You know, I’m just enjoying my career, I’m enjoying my life and I’m making music.

ChicAsianLifestyle |BritAsia

This year, Chic Lifestyle Magazine had the pleasure of attending the 2013 BritAsia TV Awards which also happened to mark their 5th anniversar y. This is an event that we’ve been hugely excited about because of the attendance and performances by huge stars such as Jaz Dharmi, Diljit Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal. With BritAsia TV being the UK’s first and only dedicated television channel for British Asian Music with a focus on Bhangra, Punjabi Pop and Bollywood but it also covers Rnb, Urban, Hip Hop and Underground Music. With this in mind we were excited for a night full of the best of BritAsian music and it did not disappoint. As we took our seats, the excitement of the enormous audience was huge and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The night, expertly hosted by Kulvinder Ghir was opened by a show stopping performance by Raxstar and Dream

Warriors, which set the tone for the show ’s impeccably high standards. Highlights for us definitely included Jaz Dharmi’s performance, particularly his spectacular entrance, appearing on the stage by being suspended from the ceiling! His incredible versatility from performing club music to classic Punjabi is what makes him so uniquely impressive and one of the biggest reasons why he received this year ’s Best Male Act Award. The winner of the Best International Act, Diljit Dosanjh was another favourite performance of the night. His 2012 album ‘Back to Basics’ has received massive critical acclaim both in the UK and internationally. His performance was completely for the audience and for his adoring fans. He sang songs requested by the audience and turned the awards into a huge party with ever ybody singing along and jumping up and dancing. It

truly felt like a celebration. Other notable winners included the amazing Sarika Gill who won the Best Female Act and The Legends Band who won the Best Live Band award. Also Naughty Boy (AKA Shahid Kahn) who received the Best Non - Asian Music Award, thanks to the huge success of his 2012 album ‘Our Version of Events’ which shot to No.1 in the mainstream charts, making him one of the most notable breakout stars of 2013. ‘The atmosphere tonight was amazing. It exceeded all my expectations and was as good as it promised to be’. This testament from Chic’s Shazia Afzal, sums up the night, which was basically just a huge party in celebration of the ver y best BritAsian music talent in the UK and internationally. We’re already excited for next year!

60’s French Films

Mathilde Mouchonnat Les Demoiselles de Rochefort By Jacques Demy

Delphine and Solange are two twins in their twenties, both living with their single mother in the small city of Rochefort. They love to sing and to dance but most of all, they ’d like to find the love of their lives. It was fun back in the Sixties, when you had the right to wear pink dresses and to sing about true love and still be considered as a spiritual human being. Well, maybe it ’s not only the Sixties but Jacques Demy ’s genius that allows us to actually think highly of ecstatic French people who wear beret and seem to fall

in love on ever y street corner. The movie transports us a bit further than the simple love stor y of the script, with its perfect framing, an original use of colours on the set (they repainted over four thousand square meters of Rochefort ’s facades to shoot the film), the witty lines and the innovative soundtrack of Michel Legrand. Yes, it ’s cheesy. Yes, it ’s annoyingly happy. Yes, it looks like giant marshmallow. Yes, Gene Kelly should see a psychiatrist for being the least complicated guy to express his feelings, ever. Nevertheless, it ’s pure cinema, mixing fantasy with reality and paying tribute to Hollywood golden age. In short, it ’s the kind of film that makes you want to live, not to die; and well, sometimes, it just feels nice.

Une Femme est une Femme “A Woman is a Woman” By Jean-Luc Godard

Mon Oncle (“My Uncle”) By Jacques Tati

How much would you have liked to ride a bike across the old Paris, during the 60’s, with one the most eccentric, funny and charming Frenchies of all time? Well, luckily enough for you, this dream is still possible because of this movie. M. Hulot is the uncle of young Gérard. They both live in ver y different worlds. Hulot lives in a working-class area of Paris where nothing is perfect, the walls fall into ruins, the conversations get tangled up and the buildings’ architecture is convoluted. In this world of humanity ever ything is abundant: fruits and vegetables, toys and games, laughters, screams, children, sugar and jam on the doughnuts… Nothing’s calculated, measured. It ’s a world like Hulot, imperfect but ver y human. Gérard lives in a modern world, based on design and appearances. All of the houses of the neighbourhood look alike

14

ChicAsianLifestyle | www.asianchic.co.uk | Issue19

and so do the owners. The atmosphere is cold, even the kitchen looks like an hospital with its white walls and all the surgical look alike instruments. Ever ything is geometric, including the nature and the characters acting like machines. It seems like the industrial world overrode human beings. In “My Uncle”, Tati paints a portrait of a post-war society, opposing two different worlds: the modern one and the timeless world of childhood and daydream. The director criticizes modernity considering it as an hindrance to human’s whim. By these means, he gives us an authentic view of the 60’s society and changes our perception of it. To be completely honest, at the end of the movie you won’t really know either you want to live next to the noisy market and eat doughnuts all day long while listening to a bird singing or either you want to cook your steak in a square kitchen making it jump out of the pan by pressing a button and then eat it in front of a sardine shaped fountain. The only thing that you’ll know for sure is that you really love Tati for making you ask yourself those types of questions.

Emile and Angela are young, beautiful and ver y much in love. There is only one fly in the ointment: Angela wants a baby within twenty-four hours. Emile doesn’t. A common problem for common people. Agreed. But this time, Godard is filming it and it doesn’t seem that common anymore. The director gives one of the most realistic view of the human being functioning through an ironic comedy, mixing fiction and reality during the entire movie, The good thing about “A woman is a woman” except for the incredible cinematography, the hilarious lines, the original use of sound, the unconventional editing, the actors’ performance, the beauty of Paris itself, the choice of costumes (… I’m breathless), is that it ’s simple but ver y true at the same time. After all, the film tells us anything we need to know to live an aware life: Girls will do anything that it takes to get what they want. Boys will realize that fact a bit too late.

ChicAsianLifestyle | Upcoming Bollywood Releases

Bollywood Films

Bullett Raja Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia Release Date: 29th November This upcoming crime thriller is not to be missed. The film, which was produced under BrandSmiith Motion Pictures and Moving Pictures, centres on a mafia underworld which is rife with crime, deceit and, of course, a lot of action. Set in Uttah Pradesh Bullett Raja is a mixture of intrigue, thrills and dark plot-lines set to have you on the edge of your seat from

start to finish. Bullett Raja stars a host of fantastic Hindi actors and actresses such as Saif Ali Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Jimmy Shergill and Chunky Pandey. The film was originally going to be called Jai Ram Ji Ki, however this was soon changed to the more action-esque Bullett Raja, which the production team felt had a better and more catchy sound to it. The film is set to be one of the biggest Hindi films of the year and will be crashing (action and all) into cinemas nationally on 29th November.

Krrish 3 Director: Rakesh Roshan Release Date: 1st November

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein Director: Punit Malhotra Release Date: 22nd November This is one for the girls. Starring the ever-fascinating Imran Khan and the rather lovely Kareena Kapoor. Translating literally as “My Fair Lady, In Your Love” this romantic film was written by Puni Malhotra. This long awaited film has been in the making since it was announced back in 2011 and has since then gone through a multitude of changes which have arguably changed the nature of the original film. The film was originally supposed to star Sonam Kapoor alongside Imram Khan, however Sonam quickly left the project since she did not want her fans to think that she was only cast in the role due to her public love

affair with the director. Imran Khan also left initially saying he was not happy with the script of the film itself and would therefore not want to be the star. After Sonam left the film officially Imran Khan had a sudden change of heart and decided that he actually would be in the film. Shortly after this Kareena Kapoor was signed to the film as the lead female role and so the final lineup was settled. The romantic comedy is set to be a huge hit, though this can merely be contributed to the fantastic star factor held within it. The script on the other had should be approached with suspicion, let ’s not forget that even Imran Khan himself initially didn’t like it!

A Bollywood Superhero Science Fiction film? Hmm... What to say about this? Where to start? The film’s sub-genremedley may sound like a made-up line, however, with the greatest respect to the producers of this film, the line will also leave viewers wondering how on earth those genres can be merged successfully without them falling into the comedy genre, if accidentally. The film centres around the rather heroic Vivek. In the first half of the movie Vivek is living in his pretty swanky high-tech den, kitted out like the gadget man’s dream world. This is where we learn the most about the character, as we watch him in his futuristic habitat. Later we learn that Vivek has super powers of epic proportions, as he is able to miraculously heal all of his injuries like some sort of super-doctor. He also has a number of powers that even he is not aware of. In the film he is against humanity (i.e. the world and mankind itself) in a war which is action filled and violence a plentiful. But why would he want to fight us? Watch the film to find out...

Superwoman

Introducing.... Superwoman! Queen of the viral and YouTube stars, Superwoman, is certainly not one to mince her words. This self-made comedian come rapper come actress come singer, rose to fame in recent years after gaining something of a cult following on YouTube. Superwoman, AKA Lily Singh, is of Canadian origins and, despite all adversities, has made her name for herself in the tough world of comedy. Using her Indian, Punjabi heritage as scope for her comic act, Superwoman has managed to capitalise on her background.

10

ChicAsianLifestyle | www.asianchic.co.uk | Issue19

On her YouTube channel, her own personal diar y if you will, Superwoman video blogs (or vlogs as I believe is the correct term now) about anything and ever ything. Vlogs include her wildly popular “How girls get ready...”and “Annoying people on Facebook.” Superwoman is known for telling it how it is, something which we may attribute her huge fanbase to. This year Superwoman played at the London Mela 2013, where she received a whole lot of attention for her unique comic style. At Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine we caught up with her after the show to get a rather intimate chat with the woman herself.

ChicAsianLifestyle | Interview

Being a young Asian woman comedian have you found it difficult breaking through?

And what would you like to do in the future? What do you still need to break into now?

If there was another London Mela would you come back and do it again?

It ’s the hardest thing and the biggest blessing at the same time. It ’s hard because, being a female, when people see you you might get sexist remarks. It ’s a blessing in the sense that when you don’t follow that traditional path that people expect you to it becomes outstanding and draws attention. So it ’s been the biggest challenge and the biggest blessing.

I don’t know if it ’s going to be acting, or singing, or a TV show even. I would love it to be in entertainment. As long as it makes people laugh and smile, that ’s all I want to do.

Definitely! I would definitely come back, as long as all these wonderful people are back here.

What was it that motivated you to be where you are now? I figure you can’t let things like that stop you living your life, with anything. Growing up I was a ver y outspoken person, I was a president of all the clubs at school and that ’s something I’ve never stopped. I don’t want to live my life for others, I want to live for myself. And I saw that there was a need for a female to do this. I’m fearless, that ’s what I say, fearless. That’s the best way to be isn’t it? Did you always know that this is what you we’re going to be? Are you from a traditional family where they expect you to be a doctor or a lawyer?

How did you find the Mela? I found it to be awesome! I feel like I get surprised all over again when I travel somewhere new other than Toronto and people are like “Oh my God, Superwoman!” I’m like “Me?” I get so surprised all over again. When I go out and see people have signs, like “Superwoman”, it ’s just so overwhelming. It ’s a great experience.

Do you have any new material or anything we should be expecting? My first movie is releasing next year, so maybe more acting. Hopefully! Thank you for speaking to us! Good luck with everything. Interview by Charlotte Grainger

Do you think you have the same following here as you do back home? The thing is, I think maybe more people will know me back home. Having said that there’s a greater appreciation for you when you’re away from home, because people see me ever ywhere in Toronto. It ’s not that they don’t appreciate me, they still do, but I’ve noticed that when I go abroad that the reaction is a bit greater.

To be honest right before I decided to start consistently doing the YouTube videos I was in the process of applying for my masters. So it was either masters or YouTube, so it was a really big dilemma.I didn’t always know I was going to do YouTube, just because when I was younger YouTube didn’t exist, because I’m old. But I knew I wanted to do entertainment, I knew I didn’t want to do the nine to five. Whether it was rapping, acting or whatever, I knew it was something I wanted to do.

Mohammed Saleem: Rise to Sweet Success A short history of Bradford’s Kashmir Crown Bakeries store As with most children, Mohammed Saleem’s idea of what he should do in terms of a career were quite different to his parents. Saleem was born in 1940 in Bagh Sheri, Mirpure Azad Kashmir, and whilst his dad would have firmly liked Saleem to go to college get on the career ladder that way, he had other plans. Whilst in Bagh Sheri, Mirpure, he sat his Matriculation exams, and shortly afterwards got a job in a textile mill there. This was merely the beginning of Azid’s career, though. A couple of year’s into his textile job Saleem wanted out. “I had a deep desire to strike out on

my own, but I didn’t have the means” he said. And a few years later he would make that desire a reality. With just a fiver in his pocket Saleem turned up in Bradford, England in 1961. He settled in Bradford working in yet another textiles factory. Soon after he got a job in a shop called Kashmiri Food Store, where he worked for another five years. This is realy where he learnt about the Asian food market and honed in his skills in buying and selling, this is something which would later come in handy when he decided to open his own business. Taking a job as an Asian sweets delivery driver. This gave him the idea for his business; he would start an Asian bakery and confectionery shop. He bought an oven and a mixer and began making a range of Asian bakery products, all of which proved very popular with the population of Bradford.

A few years later, in 1970, Saleem bought a bakery store on Carrington Street, called Kashmir Crown Bakeries, which was one of the first Asian bakeries in Europe. This is where he developed his very special sweet, Crown Cake Rusk. The cake is still made to the same recipe to this day! Now, 43 years later, the company has grown to something which even Saleem himself could not have predicted. Saleem is still the company Chairman, but has now passed on the managerial responsibilities on to the next generation. KCB now distribute to Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Spain, along with USA and Canada. The company is now renowned worldwide!
