Bipolar Sunshine

B

ipolar Sunshine’s Sheffield gig was off to a bad start when – on the motorway, heading for the Steel City – his tour van was pulled over by the police for being too heavily loaded with equipment. “We had to get out in the middle of the motorway and get a taxi,” explains the 30-year old singer from Manchester, shaking his head in disbelief. But then a sly grin cracks across his face. “The ironic thing is that the police officer who stopped us - he was massively overweight himself.”

We’re sitting in the backstage area of The Leadmill, and Adio Marchant is dressed to impress as usual in a floral-print jacket, matching trousers and multi-coloured trainers.

His smart-casual style, often accessorised with vintage sunglasses, has become a bit of a trademark for the Mancunian, who insists he does his own styling.

His best piece of fashion advice? “The best clothes will always be in your grandparents’ house,” he fires back without hesitating. “Back in the days they had better cuts and better styles. Now, you can just buy the same stuff in every Urban Outfitters or Topman.

They’re trying to mass-produce individual style, but it doesn’t work like that. My best jacket is actually my grandmother’s jacket, and I don’t give a fuck.”

Sheffield is the second stop on Bipolar Sunshine’s UK tour, which will lead him and his band up and down the country. Playing live shows and showing his audience a good time is what Adio enjoys most about being a musician, he says. “At this stage right now I just want to play for anyone. That’s what it’s all about. We’re trying to create a sick vibe and atmosphere where you can just be yourself and do what you want.”

Having just returned from SXSW – one of the biggest annual music conferences, held in Austin, Texas - Bipolar Sunshine has had a lot of opportunities to satisfy his desire to perform live. “We played three or four shows a day... it’s crazy over there. But it’s all part of your initiation into this game,” Marchant explains. Apart from performing with his band, he also had the chance to see some of his favourite American artists and musical influences play, most memorably Erykah Badu and rapper Travis Scott. Not a bad track record for Bipolar Sunshine’s first visit to the US.

Being British naturally makes him stand out in America - also on a personal level, Adio notes: “I only spoke to a few chicks out there, but they’re all like, ‘you’ve got a really funny accent! Say my name’.” He does his best impression of a twenty-something American girl and laughs. “Most of the time, they don’t even know where Manchester is; people tend to think it’s just another place near London,” he adds.

Speaking of Manchester, the 30-year old has a bone to pick with journalists repeatedly referring to the 1980’s Madchester days when talking about the musical legacy of his hometown. Like any musician from the area, he knows of and appreciates the great artists that shaped the musical landscape of that era in Manchester and beyond. But according to Adio Marchant, it’s time to move on. “There’s no place in the world that keeps talking about something that happened thirty years ago. It’s like, just move on man!” he says, rolling his eyes.

“A lot of the journalists who write these articles are still holding on to that stuff they think Manchester represents, the Hacienda and all. But I think we’ve passed that now.

His first track ‘fire’ is a slow-tack about difficulty in relationships showered with mellow, shimmery guitars and some spoken words.

Bipolar Sunshine doesnt idiolise anyone, but if he did it would be someone like Prince, Kanye, Alex Turner, Morrissey, Pharell... so not many really.

Bipolar Sunshine teamed up with Rudimental to create a feel-good tune called ‘Distance’ in just 24 hours. Also with rumours that they may collaborate again.

I mean that in the nicest way possible; I’m just saying, things are moving in a new direction. There is a lot of new talent around.”

The 30-year old’s confidence of his talent and abilities as a musician are what distinguished him from day one in the business. Instead of approaching record labels with sample tracks, in the hope of getting signed, Marchant set up his own label together with producer Jazz Purple. “I just thought, I’m gonna make music that I like and put it out. I wasn’t afraid, and I was confident that it would touch. And as soon as we put the music out, a lot of people started to get in contact about signing us. That’s how we ended up in a joint venture with my own label and Polydor.”

But there is more to that decision than just the background of artistic freedom. “I really want to get into signing other people as well. I want to use that same ethos and that same drive to break someone else,” he explains. “When the time is right for us to be looking at other artists - maybe in a year or so - we’ll have that platform of our own label already in place.” Leaning back on the weathered leather sofa, he adds: “I don’t want to be in music forever. I want to be like one of those guys that is just on the phone all the time.”

In the upcoming months, however, Marchant intends to dedicate his time and efforts to his solo career. “For now, it’s about setting off,” he says.

And it looks as though he is on the best way to make that happen. After the success of his 2013 releases “Drowning Butterflies”, “Fire” and “Rivers”, numerous critics have heralded Bipolar Sunshine as ‘the next big thing’ and ‘the sound of 2014’. But how does it feel to work under the pressure of such predictions? “I think pressure is good sometimes, it drives you forward. But I don’t get pressured by polls or rankings,” the singer confesses. “I’m just going to make my music like I want to make it and not get infatuated by people saying I’m going to be massive in 2014. I’ll leave that to my fans and the people who come to watch my shows to decide. I’ll just stick to what I’m doing.”

He adds: “We’re all human beings; we all share and want the same things. To me, writing songs is about telling someone’s story in a way that others can relate to”.

Where does he find inspiration for his songs, which frequently juxtapose serious lyrics with catchy, upbeat melodies? “I just try to be honest about what has happened to me or my friends,” the Mancunian reveals. “I don’t class myself as any different. A relationship can piss me off like it can piss anyone else off. I just chose to write about it. I like to think about things that will take me to a different place. Dreaming, that’s what I do.”

Adio Marchant, who used to be the front man of a band called Kid British, says it wasn’t difficult finding his own, individual style for Bipolar Sunshine: “Nothing was deliberate, it was just natural. I never thought ‘let’s make something completely different to Kid British’. That was four people’s ideas, whereas this is completely me, so it was always going to be unique.”

Asked to describe his own sound, the singer stops to think for a moment. “It’s ‘good vibe’ music. Music that will soothe your soul, but also make you do something,” he says finally.

And then he discloses what might just be the cause for this 30-year olds seemingly endless energy, ambition and optimism: “What I do every morning when I wake up, is just turn up the music really loud.

“I’ve had a few neighbour complaints already, but I think the best way to start the day is to be ready for it. I wake up, and put on a song that’s loud, fast, quick! It’s like a caffeine overdose rush straight through your ears,” he says with a broad smile on his face. Adio Marchant has big plans for the future, but it seems he also has the positive, no-bullshit attitude to fulfil them.

Life after GBBO

He found fame on series three of BAFTA award winning TV show, Great British Bake Off (GBBO), and has since launched his own business, wrote two cook books, completed the prestigious Dipl么me de P芒tisserie at Le Cordon Bleu, and moved house.

Wondering how he does it? Chic gets the low down.

John Whaite’s Fig, Stilton and Prosciutto Pizza

>> As he walks into the room, I have to double take the once skinny framed, scraggly haired boy that won the nation’s hearts on the GBBO show in 2012.

The 25-year-old seems to have grown into himself, as they say. He’s not lost the beard just yet, but he is sporting a much cleaner crop; he appears to have a much broader frame and certainly holds an air of authority – grabbing the attention of every person in the room from the moment he walks through the door. It’s clear his popularity from winning the show still stands, as crowds begin to gather around him.

“I love bringing my friends together to make a supper; this recipe is perfect for that as the portions are individual. I’ve never had a complaint about it so it should please even the pickiest person.”

“It’s been a crazy two years since GBBO” John begins. “I can’t believe I’m on to my second book already.”

- Makes four small pizzas -

Ingredients:

John published his first book, John Whaite Bakes, just a year on from the show, and his second, John Whaite Bakes At Home, has just hit the shelves.

For the dough 400g strong white bread flour 7g salt 15g golden caster sugar 7g fast-action yeast 280ml tepid water 30g butter, melted Sunflower or olive oil Extra flour and ground cornmeal/ polenta for dusting

“They are very similar in style and design but this one is different because it’s not based on moods like the first, it’s based on the simplicity of home baking – the kind you enjoy with mates and a few drinks, or happy times with family.”

Despite now having the Diplôme de Pâtisserie – the most rigorous and comprehensive program in classic French pastry techniques – John is not content stopping there. “I’ve launched my own chocolate company,” he giggles, infectiously.

“I’ve named it ‘The Hungry Dog’, in memory of my Granddad. But what’s ironic is that my Granddad actually didn’t like chocolate – the grumpy old bugger – but he always used to say the saying ‘The hungry dog hunts best’, and it kind of stuck in my mind. I’m hoping people will agree my chocolates are worth the hunt.”

John runs the business from his new home, a flat in a converted Victorian Hospital built in the 1850s. “The reason I bought it, is because of its high ceilings and tall arched sash windows which let the natural light through – it’s essential for my food photography.

Essential equipment: Pizza stone (or baking sheet)

Method:

“I’d love to eventually have polished concrete work surfaces for pastry making and built-in chopping boards – one for bakery and one for patisserie – but I’m happy with my eBay finds for now. The latest is an industrial sized cooling rack. I could cool up to 500 cupcakes at any one time, but I’d need a bigger oven.”

For the bread dough, put the flour in a mixing bowl and stir through the salt, sugar and yeast. Add the water and melted butter and bring into a scraggy ball.

Knead on to the counter for five to ten minutes, or until smooth and elastic. If you have a freestanding electric mixer, knead the dough in that using the dough hook for about five minutes. Roll the ball of dough around in a lightly oiled bowl, then allow to rest until doubled in size: about 60 to 90 minutes.

With the 2014 GBBO show on the horizon, John offers his advice to the budding bakers of Sheffield, who are considering applying for the next series: “Be honest in your application form, enjoy every moment, and don’t give up if you don’t get accepted the first time round.

“It also helped me doing two things at once,” he adds, grinning proudly at the thought of his achievements.

Place the pizza stone (or baking sheet) in the oven and heat to 250°C/ 220°C fan (gas as high as it will go).

“I juggled the GBBO show with my law degree and I found it really helped flicking between the two to give my mind a break.”

When the dough has risen, divide into four equal balls, roll one ball out into a disc of about 18cm diameter.

Place this on a baking sheet that is very well dusted in flower. Crumble on a quarter of the stilton and a quarter of the quince, drape three slices of prosciutto over the top and top with four pieces of fig. Drizzle with a little olive oil then slide off the baking sheet and on to the ferociously hot pizza stone, and allow to bake for ten to 15 minutes, or until the edges have puffed up and are a glorious golden brown. Repeat with the remaining dough and topping. Serve with a scattering of pomegranate seeds and a few rocket leaves.

You can’t argue given that he came out top in both challenges - gaining a first class honours degree as well as winning the show.

“It seems surreal now, thinking back.” He adds. “I just remember being all jelly legged.

So what’s next? “Anything and everything” he proclaims. “I’m passionate about what I do – I ran away to join the culinary circus and I hope it never ends.” www.johnwhaite.com @JohnWhaiteBakes - 15 -

T

he last time we spoke to Ross, he had taken on a new approach to build himself back up to his former glory. His secret weapons – former European Boxing Champion, Ryan Rhodes, who took on the role as trainer, and Dennis Hobson, his new manager.

“I boxed very well, did what Ryan Rhodes told me, and won again, this one on points.

So how’s it going? “On March 2, I had my comeback fight and first of many wins against Levan Garibashvili from Georgia who had a pretty even record” Ross tells us.

Can he beat that? “I’m now in training camp for my next fight on Saturday, May 10, at The Octagon Centre in Sheffield. Ryan Rhodes is putting me through it and constantly guiding me in the right direction.”

“We were so happy Dennis gave me this opportunity so early into my comeback.”

“The ref stopped the fight in the third round. It was great to be back winning. I had stars and friends from the boxing world there supporting me so I wanted to impress - the likes of Clinton Woods, Curtis Woodhouse, David Fidler and SPECIAL K Kell Brook.

Ross, who got his name ‘Ross the Boss’ from his days as captain of the British Army Boxing Team, also wanted to say thanks for all of the support he’s received. “I’ve got a great team around me. My wife Nicola and my two boys really support me.

Ryan Rhodes is a great trainer and I’m constantly picking his knowledge. Dennis Hobson Promotions are doing some great stuff for me and guiding me in the right direction to get me up at really top level.

“I had three soldiers march me to the ring that a friend of mine, serving soldier Chris Barnes arranged and did for me. The whole evening was a big buzz.”

An injury from 2011 – a torn ligament in his right knee – took Ross out of boxing for 15 months. Then, his return to the ring in 2013 wasn’t the comeback he had in mind. “It went wrong” Ross told us. “I thought I could just go back in at the deep end”.

“I also want to give a massive thank you to my sponsors: Pow UK, Worksop Timber, Rhodes Asbestos, Alpha Plus, LSA meats, Sweeny4, BFN Nutrition and UKFCA. Boxing is a very tough sport in many aspects until up at top level so without their help it would be even harder for me reaching the top and the goals and dreams that I’ve got.

It seems his new tactics have certainly worked, with a strong start to 2014. “Because it was a good win, I had two days off training to rest.

“A thank you also goes to the Soldiers that marched me out, my cutsman Jamie Sheldon, and boxers SPECIAL K Kell Brook, Ryan Rhodes, Curtis Woodhouse, Zac Collins, Shawn Malcolm and my security team Big Cam and Big Craig that walk me out to the ring.”

“I’ve got such good support. My manager and promoter Dennis Hobson wanted me on his next show in Newcastle on the undercard to a World Title. It was great to be on the big shows again.

CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane

Have you got your golden ticket? Roald Dahl’s Charlie and The Chocolate Factory – the new musical – is now showing at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London’s West End. The children’s classic tale of young Charlie Bucket and the mysterious confectioner Willy Wonka comes to life in the brand new musical, directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes.

But it’s not just for kids! The musical will wow the adults too.

When Charlie wins a golden ticket to the Wonka Chocolate Factory, it’s the chance of a lifetime to feast on the sweets he’s always dreamed of. But as they step through the gates into a sugary wonderland of incredible edible delights, the five lucky golden ticket winners discover not everything is as sweet as it seems.

The show moves effortlessly from one scene to another, featuring an edible garden, an army of squirrels and the weird but wonderful line-up of Oompa-Loompas must be believed to be seen.

The whole audience were in fits of laughter, with a combination of good gags, hilarious dance moves, and spoilt brat Veruca Salt certainly steals the show.

There’s a few unexpected surprises for the audience too as some of the characters make their way through the stalls and an enchanting paper plane floats high above the balconies.

It seems the sky is the limit for little Charlie too, as he heads up high in the glass elevator to end of the show.

This modern, inventive twist on the classic tale is a visual treat!

Never Try This At Home

A production by Birmingham Repertory Theatre

The tag line read “A disturbing homage to Saturday morning TV”, the disturbing part was certainly right. This was Carl Grose and the aptly named Told by An Idiot’s original play, Never Try This At Home.

feeling uncomfortable, as I believe much of the audience were, when Okorie Chukwu, the only black cast member, was put in shackles and another character commented on how him being chained up was “no coincidence”.

The play told the story of Shushi, a 1970’s Saturday morning kids TV show similar to the likes of Tiswas, and how the show met its untimely end one fateful broadcast when things went far too far.

I believe the main problem with the show is that the issues it attempts to satirise are still very real and current. Sure, this play would work in a utopian world, one in which we have completely eradicated sexism and racism, got over Jimmy Savile’s child molestation and forgotten all about the IRA, but we haven’t. Making jokes about such things now is not only distasteful, but also damn right offensive.

I can only assume from the write-up I was handed at the door that this was meant to be a satirical and comic look at Saturday morning TV, whilst in fact it was a complete disaster played out before our very eyes in the studio of the Crucible Theatre. I have thought long and hard about how to portray the show, usually being a huge fan of everything Sheffield Theatres chooses to show, and yet I can find few redeeming qualities in Never Try This At Home, despite trying.

Whilst watching the show it crossed my mind that perhaps I was too PC, perhaps I’d been indoctrinated into thinking that we shouldn’t make fun of these things and that perhaps I was, for want of a better phrase, too uptight about the whole thing. Perhaps the whole thing was a big mistake and we should be dealing with these issues in the rather healthy way of making fun of them. I certainly see the argument for this and yet I still couldn’t bring myself to laugh at the crude, tasteless jokes of Never Try This At Home.

For a show that was supposedly attempting to poke fun at issues such as racism, sexism and the always-hilarious child molestation, this performance missed the mark, appearing to be sincerely sexist and racist. I could not help

Cleopatra at the Lyceum

What first intrigued me on hearing about this ballet was the name. There is just something about the name Cleopatra; it conveys a sense of female empowerment.

She is a femme fatale, playing the men around her as pawns and controlling her environment and position. She is a historical figure who has always interested me, so when the opportunity arose I jumped at the chance to see the ballet.

This was a Northern Ballet Company production. I’d seen a couple of their productions before, Beauty and the Beast and, more recently, A Christmas Carol, and very much enjoyed them. With that in mind I had extremely high expectations for Cleopatra.

The opening, the prelude, sees Martha Leebolt in the title role indulge in a dance with Wadjet, a God that takes the form of a snake, whom she has summoned to help free her from her human form and take a place amongst the Gods. The ballet begins and finishes in this way, as these are Cleopatra’s final mortal moments.

She then drowns him in his own bathwater; this is shown through a dance, which is simultaneously exciting and inexplicably erotic.

Cleopatra then moves on to Julius Caesar and has a child, a son, with him. During this sequence we see Cleopatra and Caesar between the sheets, which, as if by magic, transforms into a baby. Then, obviously, a few years later, Caesar gets assassinated and Cleopatra is heartbroken…

Until, of course, she meets Mark Anthony, a man who is already married, but has the power that she wants for herself. Anthony’s wife comes on the scene to try and take him back, but Cleopatra won’t let her and, presumably, Anthony, being a man, has no say or guilty in the whole arrangement. After a battle, which he loses, Anthony has to kill himself, but cannot bring himself to do so and so Cleopatra does it for him. Isn’t she just the best?

The ballet as whole was very contemporary in style. By that I mean that there was a lot of thrusting, popping and gyrating. It was very erotic in places, which was something I did not expect, though maybe I should have, given the subject matter. In all it was extremely enjoyable, though, with beautifully designed costumes and delightfully choreographed dances. I would suggest this ballet6 to anyone, if only for that.

We are then taken back, through the eyes of Wadjet, to see Cleopatra’s rich and interesting past. We start at the wedding of her and Ptolemy, her brother. The two marry and then partake in a dance of power, each battling for power over Egypt.

This ends and Cleopatra learns that her brother will never let her have any power.

There’s no doubt that Sheffield is blessed with a unique and exciting food scene. Nestled in the city are a number of independent restaurants serving delicious food specially crafted from fresh produce and local ingredients. etting a table at Mud Crab Diner on Eccy Road is seldom easy, if at all possible on short notice. But my god is it worth it. A laid-back, American style diner decked out with motorbike themed décor, its buzzing atmosphere is pleasantly up-beat without the noise impeding too much on your evening.

Things I’d heard about the restaurant had seriously built-up my expectations, so I was somewhat apprehensive of being let down.

Selecting from a generous and varied menu we opted for shared nachos to start. Now if you’re anything like me, this would inspire little enthusiasm. Sure, I enjoy a nacho the appropriate amount, but by no means would this order excite me. Mud Crab nachos, however, are actually damn good.

Imagine, you’ve got your standard nachos ingredients, but rich with taste and topped with beef brisket. Amazing.

Having never heard about the diner without mention of the peanut butter burger, or insistence that “it’s actually really nice, you have to try it”, I tried it. The basis being you can get whatever normal burger, but with peanut butter, just to clarify. So, it was peanut butter burgers all round, and boy they did not disappoint. How can something that seems so wrong, feel so right, right? You may not have ever realised that there was anything missing from your burger, but there is. Its peanut butter.

So peanut butter burgers finished, full-up on brilliant food and lively atmosphere, we stick around for some drinks until fairly late on in the night. Each exchange with the waiter is as friendly and light-hearted as the last. Mud Crab may not be the most wallet-friendly joint on Ecclesall Road, but you’re definitely paying for what you getdelicious food, welcoming service and a great ambience. A must visit.

Stepping inside, the fresh contemporary venue feels a million miles from the bustling city. Glass panels from floor to ceiling gives diners the feeling of informal al-fresco dining while the leather booths and luxury tableware brings a touch of fine dining.

We visited early evening – the tables filled quickly inside and out, on the heated terrace – with many diners taking advantage of Ego’s early bird deals.

to Saturday until 4pm; or the ‘Prix Fixe Menu’ – two courses for £12.95 or three for £15.95, Monday to Friday until 7pm, Saturday until 6pm and all day Sunday.

The chicken liver and rosemary pâté starter was a favourite at our table – served beneath a bed of clarified butter and accompanied with a toasted bread and chilli tomato marmalade.

Mains included: fresh fish dishes, grills, pizzas, pastas and risottos. The food portions are well balanced – a delicious blend of fresh ingredients, well-seasoned, and elegantly arranged on plate. My perfectly cooked pan roasted salmon fillet was served with rich risotto verde and basil pesto, then to follow came a variety of tempting desserts from a hot steamed sponge pudding to cheesecake, crème brûlée and lemon tart.

Meadowhall is trialling a new ‘over-taking’ lane after receiving a letter from a ten-year-old school girl abaout ‘slow shoppers’.

Chloe Nash Lowe wrote a letter to the shopping centre asking if anything could be done to solve the problem of ‘slow walkers’ holding her up when she and her family pay a visit.

ith spring vastly approaching and the cold winter nights fading, it’s time to swap those furry coats and thick sweaters to re-fresh your wardrobe, giving it a splash of colour and filling them with bang on trends for the upcoming season. To get the inside scoop I headed down West Street myself, visiting modern edgy boutique ‘Each to their Own’ and spoke to manager, Lewis Whittaker, to discuss the trend forecast for the upcoming fashion season.

Good morning, first of all thankyou for speaking to me today. What is your trend forecast for spring 2014?

Stripes are looking huge this season, for both men and women as there are so many looks that can be created. I also predict the combination of both spots and stripes together creating a controversial look but still looking far from tacky - not forgetting tartan, which has also made a huge comeback!

2013 introduced the popularity of pastel coloursWhat colours are we expecting to be a hit this spring?

I think pastel colours will definitely be making an appearance again, as they add a little colour to everyone’s wardrobe giving off a lively vibe to get you excited for the well needed sun! I also think neutral colours will be a big hit, so all the deep browns, yellows and oranges.

Are there any specific pieces in store we should bag while we can, for both men and women?

For men, spring fashion can be particularly challenging as men’s styles are more likely to be the same over a long period of time whereas women’s fashion is constantly changing and the trends are harder to keep up with. At the moment I would definitely bag the sleeveless cardigans we have in store as they are easy to throw over trench dresses but are still light for the spring season.

How would you describe your personal style?

Do you find yourself following the current and upcoming trends? And do you feel it suits your personality well?

My personal style most definitely sums up my personality as I’m well known to be the outrageous one in the group with my choice of clothing. I am an outgoing, confident person, but then again I guess you have to be if you’re trying to pull off a vintage floral shirt. Most people choose one statement item; you could say I go for the ‘clash look’.

Young London entrepeneur launches new e-tail fashion business

True Gent, a one-stop online shopping destination for everything menswear, accessories, gifts, experiences and grooming products that was created in October, has become a huge success.

Launched by previous marketing student, David Archer, with help from his flair of studies, passion for fashion and a six-month sabbatical from his employer, the business has already expanded 60% since first starting.

“I’ve always been very style conscious and it was while I was studying for my marketing qualification that I saw a gap in the market for this kind of ‘one-stop’ website for men” he explained.

True Gent is hoping to launch their own range in the future and already has a huge presence on social media sites including Facebook and Twitter.

That Rock ‘N’ Roll, Eh? The buzz behind High Green hero Alex Turner’s Brit Award acceptance speech back in Feburary may well be dying down, but the message remains as relevant as ever, rock n roll will never die, but just how true is this?

The coulourful rock n roll landscape of yesteryear may well be turning a whiter shade of beige. Gone are the days when rock stars threw TV’s out their hotel windows, drove cars into the hotel’s swimming pool and generally made hotel employee’s life hell.

The closest you’ll come to seeing a crazed Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off a live bat, is Chris Martin chomping down on an organic stick of celery, freshly picked from his vegetable patch of course.

Rock music has been pushed into the sidelines by other genres, today’s charts are crowded with hip hop, dance and pop songs with what can only be described as a smattering of anything even resembling rock. It’s not like the 60s and 70s where the year’s most popular singles were made up of records

by Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones or The Beatles.

It makes you wonder what happened to the mass exodus of Beatlemania, where hordes of fans would bombard four lads from Liverpool with a taste for that rock n roll music.

Well it seems the answer is simple, it has been horribly mutated by a sadistic Father Time, creating trends like ‘Bieber fever’ or ‘One Directioners’, who run rampant on social networking site, Twitter.

You may say the fault is with today’s rock bands who just don’t compare to the giants of the past. Alex Turner’s rock rescue squad, Arctic Monkeys, are one of the only bands to propel themselves into the pop charts, desperately trying to drag rock music into the consciousness of the general public. It’s not entirely ineffective either as the Sheffield quadruplet have been sweeping up at awards shows as well as gaining massive album sales, their latest endeavour, ‘AM’, selling 100,000 copies on it’s first two days on sale. Numbers don’t lie, and these are making a confession, there’s rock n roll fans out there and they’re pinning all their hopes on the Monkeys, so in the man’s own words “that rock n roll it seems like it’s fading away at times, but it will never die.”

Just when you thought the adventure was over, it turns out it’s only just begun. This animated, musical delight finds Dorothy in post-tornado Kansas shortly after her adventure that was the Wizard of Oz. Rather than returning to her ordinary Kansas style life, she is whisked straight back to the land of Oz on a special mission to save her friends, Lion, Scarecrow, Tin-man and Glinda from a brand new villain, the rather scary looking (and sounding) Jester. The gang are back together once more to embark on a wild journey into the wonderful, colourful and sometimes a little bit terrible world of Oz.

This enticingly named film is something of a treat for audiences, seeing the brilliant (and currently controversial for all the wrong reasons) Woody Allen make one of his rare appearances as an actor within a film he has not actually directed.

Starring the lesser-known Olsen sister, Elizabeth Olsen, “In Secret” is a rather saucy period drama or betrayal and, of course, an illicit affair.

This is definitely a film to keep the kids entertained for a while, though there is sure to be enough to keep adults entertained as we revisit the land we all know so well. With voiceacting from Patrick Stewart, Lea Michele and Hugh Dancy, this is the first of many animated kid’s films of the summer, so enjoy.

Appearing as Murray, Allen plays “manager” to his friend, Fioravante, a man who has fallen on hard times and subsequently decides to undertake the oldest profession in the world.

The duo work together, with Fioravante working hard as a gigolo and Murray doing his best in the role, which hardly fits him at all, of manager, but they soon find themselves caught up with problems of the heart and, more importantly, the bank account.

Staring Sharon Stone, Woody Allen, Sofia Vergara and John Tuturro, this is set to be one of the biggest films of the summer, though it’s not for the weak hearted featuring sexual content and brief nudity.

Set in 1860’s Paris “In Secret” follows the tale of Therese Raquin (Elizabeth Olsen), who is married to her ill cousin, Camille (Tom Felton).

As you might imagine the marriage to her sick cousin is wholly unfulfilling and Therese finds herself both sexually and romantically unsatisfied. She spends her days working in a small shop and her evenings with her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin (Jessica Lange).

Trouble strikes when Therese meets her husband’s attractive and alluring friend, Laurent (Oscar Isaac) and the two soon embark on a sworded affair sure to end is complete disaster.

The Jessop’s Buggy Push is a brand new event for Sheffield Hospitals Charity, raising money for the Jessop Wing hospital.

Join in the fun for a 5km walk, power-walk or even run around Rother Valley Country Park’s “Green Route”.

With The Tour De France Grand Départ considered to be the world’s greatest competitive cycle race I think it got us all a teeny bit excited to discover Yorkshire would be hosting the annual world class event this July. Not only is this the first time the event has been brought to the North of England but also gives us the opportunity to show the world how great Yorkshire actually is and prompt people to book a visit.

This flat, family-friendly course is perfect for showing off your buggy pushing skills, but it’s also suitable for bikes including trailers, family bikes, wheelchairs, scooters and bike-ability adapted cycles, or even just a god old-fashioned walk.

The Route As always, the route is separated into three stages commencing at approximately 10am in the city centre of Leeds passing through hundreds of hot spots and locations throughout the county, finalizing at the Mall in London. With cyclists completing 580km amongst the three day period, they will also receive the opportunity to take a breather into the fresh countryside air and witness some of the beautiful scenery Yorkshire has to offer along the way.

You don’t need buggy - or a baby - to take part. The event is suitable for all the family, so the older children can ride their bikes around the route and the grandparents can join in too!

The park welcomes pets, so even the dogs can come along.

Stage 1: Saturday 5th July 2014 Stage one recognises the anticipation of the event, hyping up all spectators and encouraging support for the British cyclers taking part. Tour De France all kicks off in the heart of Leeds City Centre at 10am, cycling 190km in order to reach their target of Harrogate in the afternoon. The route passes through 20 various locations including Harewood, Otley, Skipton, Ripon and Kettlewell, some of the most popular cycling destinations throughout West and North Yorkshire.

However; the real vibe will begin when reaching Sheffield where the locals will be given the opportunity to become a part of this amazing experience, standing street side to witness all the action and support one of our 22 teams competing. Whether this is at the Peak District National Park for all you cycling fanatics or simply just in the heart of Sheffield itself, the event allows everyone to become involved and enjoy the extravaganza.

Without further adieu, I introduce to you… dramatic drum roll... Bokwa!

Never heard of it? Neither had I. It is a relatively new phenomena created by Los Angeles fitness instructor Paul Mavi, he spent seven years perfecting the programme which only came to the UK a few years ago, and has been picking up momentum ever since. So, speedily book your ticket on the Bokwa band wagon and try out a class.

What is Bokwa?

Bokwa is a hybrid class, containing elements of Boxing and Kwaito, which is where the name Bokwa originates. Kwaito is a cultural African dance, so Bokwa uses these dance moves combined with boxing maneuvers to create an energetic dance class, which improves muscle strength and flexibility, whilst offering a cardio respiratory endurance workout.

Stage 3: Monday 7th July 2014 Finally, although the smallest route, the 170km travel from Cambridge to London may just be the most important yet, to determine the winner.

Passing some of the most iconic locations and tourist spots in the UK, thousands of people will gather around Canary Wharf, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament and the Olympic Park to observe the last few strides of the event before the grand finale at the Mall in Central London.

It is an energetic dance fitness class with rhythmic beats with easy to follow moves. Letters and numbers form the foundation of every move.

It is advertised for all ages, as all you need to know is the numbers and letters. It is great for all fitness levels as you get out of it what you put in.

Where can I Bokwa?

There are a number of venues across Sheffield that already run classes, with, hopefully, more to follow. The University of Sheffield Gym holds regular Bokwa sessions.

These classes are only a small fee and anyone is welcome. For those that are already a member at the gyms the classes are free, but if you are not a member do not worry you can go to a one off class, but you may have to book in advance. So grab your fitness clothes, as many friends that you can convince to try it and get ready to Bokwa.

A celebration of Sheffield Street Art K id Acne A Milawi-born boy who found his artistic inspiration after seeing street artists in Leicester from the age of nine – has become a European success. His work has featured in cities as exciting as Vienna, Munich, Rome and London.

He’s gone from a spotty kid who got into a trouble with his teacher at school for stealing chalk to draw on the playground, to having his work feature on major brands such as Levis, Kenzo, Mercedez Benz, Elle and Warp Records. He has also worked on a series of pilot animations, Zebra Face for Channel 4.

According to Creative Review, “Zebra Face gets into scrapes with various friends whilst listening to as much hip hop as possible, only now the characters are in glorious technicolour and brought to life by the voices of an impressive cast of UK hip hop artists including Lady Chann, Juice Aleem, Infinite Livez, Taskforce, Farma G and Kid Acne himself. It features as part of Channel 4’s ‘Random Acts’ just after midnight.”

The successful street artist has drawn for as long as he can remember he previously told Chic Lifestyle Magazine. He went on to reveal the inspiration behind his quirky name. He combined the New York graffiti writers styled ‘Kid’ with self-deprecating and typically Britishsounding ‘Acne’. The name has stuck with him for around 20 years and has become a unique and well-recognised identity for him. His work can be spotted around the world and needless to say, scattered all across Sheffield.

In the late 90’s his work was first published in the now seminal Scrawl tome, which documented the conversion of counter culture illustration, skateboard graphics and left-field graffiti, pre-empting what are now widely recognised as ‘Street Art’ aesthetics.

Although Kid Acnee grew up in the East Midlands after migrating from Africa, he moved to Sheffield as a young man set to begin a career in art. While studying Fine Art in Sheffield, his quirky and unique style of work attracted captivated the attention of Warp Records executives who commissioned him to illustrate the LP sleeve for Plaid’s Rest Proof Clockwork in 1999. In 200, his work began to appear as the backdrop for major UK club nights and in style magazines throughout Europe.

P h legm Known for his intricate, precise, black and white illustrations created completely from his fantastical imagination, Phlegm is the most exciting and eccentric street artists in the world.

He initiated his creative career as an illustrator,

making hand-crafted zines and books. The characters and stories illustrated in his early work soon began to fly off the pages of his books as he transplanted them onto large scale, outdoor walls.

The acclaimed artist began his work in Sheffield, which is also where the bulk of his work can be found. Long abandoned warehouses and factories around the Steel City feature Phlegm’s story-telling murals, as well as many walls and allies.

Over the past year, Phlegm has taken to England’s capital to adorn the streets with what Sheffield has been fortunate to glare at for a number of years. He has also marked his territory in the most unimaginable places across the world. In November 2013, he climbed to the peak of Water Tower in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. One of the artist’s most popular and, indeed, profound pieces was based on the rising waters across the UK and is aptly called ‘Floods’.

Another of Phlegm’s famous pieces features a 33 ft high robot, which can be seen painted on the outside wall of a derelict substation in Sheffield.

According to the Huffington Post, “The bold and intricate ‘pen and ink’ detailing are characteristic of the artist’s unique style.

Phlegm’s work has a sinister, nightmarish feel, with ill-proportioned, other-worldly figures operating complicated machinery - enough to give anyone the heebie jeebies.”

Although most of his work can be noticed on walls of abandoned buildings or near-derelict buildings, a lot of his other work can be seen by canal boats and planes. His ink has spread as far as Wales, Croatia and Norway, the first global phenomenon of its kind.

Time for tea: Sheffield beauty salon staff and Olympian raise a cup for charity

“He was a very theatrical person and right before he passed away he was in the process of arranging a charity performance in Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

“Unfortunately, he never got the chance to fulfill his wish but with the help of colleagues at The Relaxation Den, I can hopefully support Time for Tea in his memory.”

The tea party at The Relaxation Den in Dore, Sheffield, will take place on May 24, and will see customers and staff join together for a cup of tea and some tasty treats, while enjoying a complimentary beauty treatment in return for a donation to the Cancer Charity.

olleagues from a beauty salon chain with locations across the region have vowed to raise a cup in support of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s new fundraising tea party initiative, Time for Tea. The Relaxation Den, which offers a full range of beauty and massage treatments, has four locations across the UK, three of which are located in South Yorkshire.

Each branch will be supporting Time for Tea by hosting a beauty treatment tea party on May 24, and offering those who follow in their footsteps the chance to win a free relax and unwind pamper package.

As part of a quirky new social media campaign, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is encouraging everyone to host their very own tea party during the month of May, and send in their best ‘Mug Shot’ to be in with a chance of winning this fantastic prize. ’Mug Shots’, consisting of a Time for Tea supporter holding their favorite tea mug, can be sent into the Cancer Charity via Twitter or Facebook throughout April, with the winner being announced at the end of the month.

2014 is a landmark year for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, as it marks 20 years of fighting cancer locally.

Time for Tea is a new fundraising initiative, sponsored by local bus company Stagecoach, encouraging the community to mark the charity’s anniversary year by hosting a tea party during the month of May.

Throughout 2014, the charity is marking its 20th anniversary by funding a wide variety of projects for the hospital, including the completion of the new Clinical Research Unit and the Day Case refurbishment.

One of the first people to send in a ‘Mug Shot’ and sign up to host their own tea party in support of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is British Taekwondo Olympian, Sarah Stevenson, MBE. Sarah (30) from Bentley in Doncaster, tragically lost both parents to cancer in 2011 and has chosen to support the Cancer Charity to raise awareness of the vital work done by the hospital.

Sarah said: “‘Weston Park Hospital is very close to my heart. My dad had an incurable brain tumor and fought his battle for only 3 months and during this short period the staff at Weston Park were just incredible.

“They were always so positive and helpful and made him feel invincible at a time when he needed it the most.

I’m supporting Time for Tea to thank everyone at the hospital for the way they take care of every person that walks through the door!”

It is hoped that Time for Tea will raise £20,000 to coincide with the charity’s twentieth anniversary.

Dad’s charity marathon mission: 40 marathons in 40 weeks

The Relaxation Den in Sheffield chose to support Time for Tea after salon manager, Lauren Maw (22), lost her granddad to cancer.

A devoted dad has set himself the challenge of running 40 marathons in 40 weeks in aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Lauren’s granddad, Terry Marsland, was diagnosed with bowel cancer and treated at Weston Park Hospital 11 years ago.

Athletics enthusiast Damian Thacker, from Hathersage, found himself compelled to raise funds after his young son was treated by staff in the Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s special Burns Unit and decided to kick off the 40 marathon feat as he celebrated his 40th birthday.

Lauren, from Brightside, said: “My granddad spoke incredibly highly of the hospital where he spent his final days and he was adamant he would help raise money the Cancer Charity throughout his chemotherapy.

Last year, Damian’s two-year-old son, Jem, received horrific burns after accidentally knocking tea over

himself, an injury which required months of treatment.

Thankfully, with the help of the specialist team at the hospital, Jem was quickly treated and managed to return home after just ten days, despite burns covering his face, right shoulder, arm and abdomen.

Whilst Jem has made an excellent recovery and maintains a relatively normal life, he still has to wear a compression suit and is monitored regularly for ongoing treatment at the hospital.

As a thank you to the hospital and the charity that supports it, Damian has chosen to undertake the unimaginable task and do so to raise money for the unit where his son was treated.

Damian said: “After seeing how well Jem was looked after, I just wanted to give something back to the unit.

With it being my 40th birthday this year I just thought ‘why not go for 40 marathons?!’

“I think my wife thought I was mad but she agreed that it was a very worthy cause and meant a lot to the both of us.”

Damian’s family and friends are continuing to support him in his challenge and clearly have every faith in him, with £600 being donated before he had even run his first race. So far, Damian has run five of the 40 races and is set to run another 35 over the coming weeks.

The marathon of marathons is set to end on Jem’s 3rd birthday at the beginning of December, with Damian saying that he’s looking forward to celebrating his milestone in a joint birthday party once all the marathons have finished.

The money raised will go towards the Burns Unit in The Children’s Hospital, Sheffield, helping to treat and support children just like Jem. The Children’s Hospital Charity Director, David Vernon-Edwards, said: “The huge challenge Damian is undertaking shows true determination; one marathon is no easy feat but 40 in as many weeks will be an amazing achievement and all of us at The Children’s Hospital Charity wish him well with his remaining race.

“We are always overwhelmed by the support we receive from members of the public through fundraising effort and generous donations.

“The money raised from this event in particular will go towards our Burn’s Unit where Damian’s son Jem was treated. We’d like to thank Damian and those who have sponsored him for supporting the hospital.”

The Children’s Hospital, Sheffield, is one of only four stand-alone children’s hospitals in the UK and is considered a centre of excellence in many areas including neuroscience.

New Subaru Outback

The new Subaru Outback is a joy to drive. It has a more premium feel than its predecessor, with soft padding now covering up the slabs of plastic that once festooned the cabin.

The result is mixed; the power is there alright, but it’s released in a way that doesn’t really blow you away. The engine steadily cranks up the clout until you’re over the maximum speed limit without even realising it. That’s kind of disappointing, because if I’m going to get a speeding ticket I want to know it was worth it.

The car is styled in a masculine way too. Previously it looked a little insipid but now there’s a definite authority about its stance. This is accentuated by Subaru’s signature bonnet scoop, which gives the impression of a car with power under the hood. Also, emphasising the Outback’s sense of toughness and its ability to tackle all roads and conditions, the latest model features body-coloured cladding in place of the previous iteration’s black plastic.

The ride is typically Subaru – Velcro-like grip and a slightly cushioned feel thanks to the comfortable seats.

In fact, as part of its 2014 upgrade, the car’s handling characteristics have been enhanced with revised suspension components and the latest incarnation of Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control ( VDC). This technology, along with alterations to the front and rear suspension, gives a stable on-road feel.

In addition, the Outback fills you with confidence in the wet or the snow – or indeed on anything without a pasting of tar. Subaru’s legendry all-wheel-drive credentials just work – no fuss – no fiddly buttons – the technology simply kicks in whenever you get to slippery terrain.

The most significant change for the Outback is the introduction of a new powertrain pairing. A world first, Subaru engineers have combined the popular 2.0-litre Boxer diesel engine with a Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic gearbox.

With the new engine and gearbox combination the fresh Subaru Outback can return an average fuel consumption of up to 44.8 mpg whilst emitting 166g/km CO2.

The figures aren’t astounding, but they’re not bad especially for a car with more gadgetry to keep it from straying off the road than the average new motor.

The upgraded cabin of the current Outback features clearer and more modern instrumentation. It includes the addition of a liquid crystal instrument cluster display and new materials for a number of dashboard elements. Black metallic panels bring about a more modern and quality appearance and feel, while a powersliding glass sunroof and UV protected front, side and rear glass also feature.

The car I drove, the Subaru Outback 2.0D Lineartronic SX, has flagship levels of standard equipment inside and out. For the exterior there are new 17-inch gunmetal alloy wheels, along with body-coloured power folding door mirrors (with integrated LED indicator repeaters), and matching colour-coded door handles. Silver roof rails and a roof spoiler are other external accents. What’s more, self-levelling automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers add extra convenience.

Phew! That’s a lot of car then – and so, when you think about it, £31,495 isn’t really that outrageous a price.

Especially when compared with German models of the same ilk.

What can we say about Salman Khan?

The man himself is something of a legend, the one true star of Bollywood.

This man has managed to forge a career for himself as not only an actor, but also a model and a successful TV presenter.

He is a favourite amongst Bollywood fans and is often hailed as one of the most accomplished actors the industry has seen in recent years. All of these reasons, and many more, have compelled us to take a look at the man that is Salman Kahn.

Son of famous face, Salim Khan, who was also an actor and a screenwriter, Salman was given the full birth name of Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan, but shortened this to the more manageable ‘Salam Khan’ when he embarked upon his career in the entertainment business. He was educated in Mumbai at St Stanislaus High School and went on to study, joining his younger brother, Atbaaz, in Gwalior at the Scindia School.

In 1988 Salam began what was to be an extremely successful acting career when he starred in Biwi Ho To Aisi, although another actor dubbed over his voice in this film. However, this did not gain the actor quite as much attention as was originally expected and, in fact, it wasn’t until his second role, within the hit film, Maine Pyar Kiya the following year that Salman gained the exposure and acclaim that he so rightly deserved. This role won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, along with a nomination for Best Actor in the same year. At this point the actor was in his early twenties and had already exceeded his goal to be a successful actor, but his career was not to end there.

Throughout the early 1990’s Salman starred in a succession of hit movies, which helped to build his

already huge fan-base and won him a number of new fans, which had previously not been aware of his work. This was a very exciting time in the young man’s career. Most notable, though, was the release of the film Baaghi: A Rebel for Love, which was a massive box office hit back in 1990. Three mildly successful films, Sanam Bewafa, Kurbaan and Patthar Ke Phool, starring the actor swiftly followed this, which only served to enhance his reputation.

Salman’s career hasn’t been all smooth sailing, though; in 1996 the actor suffered quite a knock to his career when he starred in Khamoshi: The Musical, which, despite gaining high acclaim, was a box office failure. However in the same year Salman also starred in the action hit Jeet, which did extremely well. This contrast in his early career is symptomatic of young stars, who have not yet honed in the art of discriminating against inadequate scripts.

Since then, though, Salman has starred in a number of popular films ranging in theme and genre from romantic comedies to action flicks.

After having successful conquered the world of film and Bollywood, Salman was to move into yet another area of the entertainment industry. In 2008 Salman began hosting a new game show entitled 10 Ka Dum, which often took the number one spot in terms of ratings in India. For this he won the Best Anchor Award two years running, in both 2008 and 2009. Since then he took on the position of presenter for the show Big Boss, which proved to also be a wildly successful show.

Salman has also been involved in a number of charity and fundraising projects, including starting a line of merchandise under the brand name Being Human, which is a registered charity and raises money for the underprivileged.

Salman has had one long term relationship, which was extremely public, with the actress Aishwarya Rai, but the couple broke up back in 2002. Since then, in 2013, Salman has admitted to being a virgin and stated that he is saving himself for his future wife, whilst on the show Koffee with Karan.

The Bollywood star continues to present television shows and star in hit Bollywood film and even has a number of screen performances in the pipeline.

This summer brings the rather exciting news that the legend of Hollywood that is Arnold Schwarzenegger would quite like to make a move in his acting career and work on a Bollywood film.

In an email interview with www.bollywood.com, the famous actor said that he ‘wouldn’t mind working in Bollywood’. The actor has a number of Indian fans, with films such as True Lies (1994), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Conan The Destroyer (1984) winning him a number of action film fans globally.

But how would old Arnie fit into the Bollywood film dynamic as it currently stands? Is it even possible to fathom watching the star of so many Western hit films take to the screens of Bollywood? The answer, of course, is that he would easily slip into any role in the wide variety of Bollywood action films, but could you imagine the muscle man in a romantic flick? We doubt it.

On the subject of whether he thought that Bollywood actors would be able to break in to the world of Hollywood, Arnold answered, “Definitely. Why not? It’s all about the talent and dedication to the art.

As long as they do a good job and succeed in impressing the audience, they can surely attract a fan following.”

Is this a sign that we will be seeing more of a crossover between Bollywood and Hollywood actors in the coming years? Could be.

Arnold Schwarzenegger to work in Bollywood?

The loss of a star: Nanda In March this year the world lost one of it’s oldest Bollywood stars.

Nanda, who had previously worked with some of Bollywood’s top actors, died of a heart attack. She was 75 years old and passed away in her home in Mumbai. The death has been described as a ‘shock’, since she did not have a history of illness and her death was sudden.

Nanda began her career in Bollywood in the 1950’s, as a child actor and became a known face at a very early age. Later, as a young adult, she went on to take leading and supporting roles in some of Bollywood’s most acclaimed films.

She was known for acting with such legends as Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, Waheeda Rehman and Ashok Kumar. Most notably she starred in a grand total of eight films with the greatly popular and suwccessful actor, Shashi Kapoor.

Nanda was best known for films including Jab Jab Phool Khile, Teen Deviyan, The Train and Ram Laxman. She retired from acting in 1982 and during her brief, yet successful, career in the entertainment business Nanda won a number of fans.

The sense of a moment: Gianni Berengo Gardin Prahlad Bubbar gallery is exhibiting work of Italy’s most celebrated living photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin; his first UK exhibition since he was selected by Bill Brandt for Twentieth Century Landscape Photographs at the V&A, London, in 1975.

The Sense of a Moment: Gianni Berengo Gardin exhibition is open from April 11 to May 23, and features original prints drawn from the artist’s personal archive. Berengo Gardin’s iconic images of post-war Italy will be shown alongside his first photographic series shot away from home, in a rarely documented rural India between 1977-1979.

Berengo Gardin was prompted to visit India’s rural heartland, the regions between New Delhi and Bombay, because “I have always been a great admirer of Gandhi and one of his statements is engraved on my mind. He said that Europeans and Westerners come to India and visit the big cities but they never go to see the villages, even though, in reality, India is made up of small villages.”

Over the course of two years, Berengo Gardin documented the India talked about by Gandhi in a fascinating series of portraits that intimately depict the lives of ordinary people, their rituals, customs and industry.

These images were to later feature in his prestigious Scanno prizewinning publication India dei Villaggi (1980) and continue to serve as a remarkable record of life in India during an altogether different epoch.

Much like his Indian series, Berengo Gardin’s photographs of post-war Italy also capture a country on the brink of transformation, from an agricultural based economy, which had been severely affected by the consequences of World War II, into one of the world’s most industrialized nations.

Many of Berengo Gardin’s famous views of Italy will be featured in the exhibition, alongside previously unseen pieces. His iconic images of Venice will be shown as will Henri Cartier Bresson’s favourite shot by the artist, taken from inside a vaporetto – its glass and mirrors ingeniously reassembling the sharp-suited men aboard.

Gallery owner Prahlad Bubbar - a leading specialist in classical Indian and Islamic art and widely known for his knowledge of the masters of 19th century Indian photography - is delighted to present this beautiful portrait of the countries in which he himself grew up, shot at a pivotal point in their histories by family friend and master of Italian photography: Gianni Berengo Gardin.

About Prahlad Bubbar Prahlad Bubbar is a dealer and consultant of Indian and Islamic art based in London. He is a leading specialist in classical paintings from 1400-1900, respected in the field for his knowledge. He has placed works of historical importance and great beauty in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum Rietberg, Zurich, and the David Collection, Copenhagen, to name a few.

Prahlad’s wife Shubha is a post-graduate from Central Saint Martins. She is an artist and co-curator of exhibitions and projects. They staged the first exhibition in London on the great Indian photographer Raja Deen Dayal in 2001 and have since shown select examples of vintage photography from the subcontinent. Most recently, ‘Dazzling and Spirited: Indian Court Paintings 1400-1900,’ presented at Asia House, London, in October 2009, was accompanied by a series of scholarly lectures.

Kashmir Crown Bakeries – Wholesale across Europe It started in Bradford in 1970, and now decades later it’s a European success.

Kashmir Crown Bakeries (KCB) isn’t sausage rolls and gingerbread men like we might expect from a national chain bakery, but something much more special and delicious. Kashmir Crown Bakeries is authentic Asian cakes biscuits and savouries, influenced straight from original Pakistani recipes.

Founder, businessman Mohammed Saleem, spent his youth in Pakistan and clearly never forgot the flavours he encountered as he made one of the country’s first authentic Asian bakeries a reality. With stores expanding across Yorkshire and Manchester, Kashmir Crown Bakeries now produces baked products wholesale; becoming one of the largest Asian food manufacturers in Europe and employing

hundreds of people across West Yorkshire.

Their popular delicacies include traditional Pakistani fare, such as Badam Cake Rusk, Sweet Baker Khani, Pangeere Sundh and Karachi Crunch Mix, which thanks to the success of the company are enjoyed across the continent. Although maintaining a high standard of traditional Asian cakes and savouries, the future of KCB is to attract younger Asians to their products. “The next generation of Asians have a more westernised palette. Chocolate is going to be a key ingredient for the future, we know with chocolate that older the Asians are not overly keen but the younger ones love it.”

Seating up to 80 diners, the fully licenced restaurant will be open Monday to Sunday from 5pm til late.

A Brief History of Bhangra

New Bhangra Releases:

Dave Purdy Bhangra, the uplifting, rhythmic music with roots in both the Punjab and UK, has provided a musical bridge between Punjab immigrants living in the UK and their native lands of India and Pakistan since the mid 20th century.

Jagowala Jatha & Inside-Man Chanan Munare (Out 10th April)

Originally a dance performed by farmers of the Punjab region, Bhangra was used to celebrate the spring harvest of crops such as hemp (also known as bhang), giving birth to the name Bhangra. The dance usually included vigorous moves, which were included to mimic typical actions used when farming.

The dance was performed to the beat of a double-sided drum named a dhol, which later became one of the defining features of bhangra music.

As Bhangra began to grow in popularity it started to move away from it’s agricultural origins and began to be used in more general celebrations like weddings or birthday parties, and the term began to be used to refer to the music as well as the dance.

Bhangra quickly began to trickle into the culture of the South Asian community living in the UK. Here individuals needed a way to connect with their ancestors and origins, which bhangra provided.

In the hands of the British Punjab community bhangra began to evolve as the traditional Asian elements began to merge with Western elements. Instruments such as the guitar, saxophone and synthesizer began to feature in bhangra music creating a hybrid Asian/British sound.

One of the forerunners of this new style of bhangra was a Southall based band called Alaap led by the bhangra godfather Channi Singh, who has been awarded with the BBC’s lifetime achievement award and an OBE for services to bhangra.

Their debut album ‘Teri Chunni De Sitare’ was one of the first examples of traditional bhangra merging with the Western disco genre.

RDB Isn’t Over Yet

Bhangra has made a huge transition, now, instead of the farming areas of India and Pakistan you are more likely to hear the beat of the dhol in British dance clubs, vigorous moves included, some things never change.

On hearing that Manj Ral would be leaving the band RDB and going it alone as a solo artist, you might be forgiven for thinking that this is the end of the RDB legacy, but you’d be wrong.

Surjeet Ral, better known as Surj RDB, has now confirmed that he will be continuing making music under the name RDB, meaning that, in a form, the band will live on. Surjeet has stated that he will be doing this in honour of his eldest brother, Kuldeep Ral, known to some as Kuly, who, sadly, passed away back in 2012.

DEEP COLD Passes Away This year has is not yet half way through and yet we already have some extremely sad news from the world of music. The young Punjabi rapper, DEEP COLD, has passed away this year leaving fans shocked and devastated.

“I was sad to see my brother leave RDB. Along with my late brother Kuly, he was one of the founders of the group. He will be missed, but I wish him all the best in his solo career.” says Surj, who will now be taking the reins in terms of making music.

DEEP was a Punjabis-American rapper, from Houston, Texas. His interest in music and his developing music career started when DEEP was very young. Whilst growing up his family was not in the best financial situation, which lead the young man to pursue a number of income streams.

Kuly was always the leader of the group and many have, in the past, underestimated the influence that Surj had on the music. Now is his chance to really make a mark on the music industry and prove to the world that he truly is as much a part of RDB as his brothers were.

Over the course of his career DEEP won fans in both the UK and India. He has become something of a global phenomenon. DEEP COLD died on 5th March, whilst in India. His death was unexpected and sudden.

By Jessica Fogarty Holding the title of Junior Champion at just 13 years old, there have always been high expectations for Sheffield born Thai boxer, Imran Khan. Now 20 years on, age 33, Imran looks back on his successful career – a two time world champion, three time European Champion and three time British Champion.

What age did you start boxing?

I was only 11 when I first discovered boxing. A friend got me into it.

Who and what are your inspirations?

I used to watch a lot of Marshall Arts and Rocky films, then I just kind of fell in to the sport and never looked back.

What are your biggest achievements?

Becoming a two time World Champion is my greatest success. I was 26 when I won my first title in 2006, then I won my second title a year or two later.

You’ve travelled the world throughout your career, why did you decide to stay in Sheffield?

It’s my home and always will be. I love the city.

I’ve fought in some of the biggest stadiums in Thailand, appeared on TV out there, and travelled all over Europe but nothing beats coming back home.

What’s next for you?

I have a fight in three weeks’ time with a young up-and-coming boxer in St Helens. It’s just a warm-up fight but I’m not looking past him.

Then, because I’m Muslim, I’m fasting in June so I’ll take some time out.

What do you do when you’re not boxing?

I help out with the family car business and teach boxing to adults and juniors in Hillsborough.

You’re also part of an eight man tournament in Sheffield in September, how do you think you’ll do?

I’m planning on winning it. A 10k cheque would make me happy.

Sheffield supermodel x creative director A name known throughout the UK fashion scene as the most diverse, versatile and the only Asian creative that has officially earned a respected title as a fashionista, Zaf Shabir is one individual with many talents.

With a solid background in fashion, Zaf has created a name for himself in both the Asian and mainstream fashion industries. Recognised and known for his distinct image, runway walk, fierce execution and his mane of hair, this is one award winning supermodel and creative director divo hard to forget.

How did your career in the fashion industry begin?

What made you take the transition from modelling to production?

What does your collaboration with Moonlight involve?

I studied fashion design in Leeds and landed myself a job with a leading retailer as their purchaser. It was while working for this company that I got scouted by a modelling agency so I decided to focus on this as a career and I moved to London.

I moved accidentally in to production. Because my background is in design and management and I have made so many contacts and connections in the fashion world, I suppose the transition made sense.

What have been the highlights of your modelling career?

What does being a creative production director involve?

Together we can create bespoke, creative projects to suit any client’s needs. We are currently looking for talented industry professionals to work with in Sheffield – from make-up-artistes to designers and photographers.

My modelling career took off fast. My first runway show was at London Fashion Week in 2010 and I never looked back. I quickly became known as the only South Asian model doing high end work. I worked with some big names in the hair industry; such as L’Oreal, Toni & Guy and Lee Strafford. They have a lot of hair to work with, I have a massive nest which I mostly keep under control with a hat.

I mostly manage the creative production of fashion shows. My first big show was at an A-list show in Pakistan – the equivalent to the likes of Gucci and Armani in the UK. I’ve also done shoots for many national publications, working alongside international models. My experiences have helped me to gather a good bank of contacts.

What’s next for you?

In June, I’m off to NYC and LA, directing fashion shoots, then I’m back home in Sheffield ready for fasting. I’ll be ready for some much needed rest by then too. When I’m home, I tend to hibernate. Apart from catching up with family, I can go unnoticed. I always wear black too.

Why do you only wear black?

What are you working on at the moment?

What has been the most memorable moment of your career?

I was on the cover of Vogue, which was a pretty big moment for me.

Were you surprised by your success?

Absolutely. I’m not the tallest of guys but I have a unique image which appeals to the industry. I also started modelling quite late in life in comparison to most. I was 25 when I began four years ago, working alongside some 16 and 17 year old teens. I’m glad I got my education and experience first though – it developed me as a person, giving me the knowledge and confidence to move on to fashion production.

I’m currently working in collaboration with Khalid Mahmood, the director at Moonlight – a leading cinematography brand in Sheffield. I’m selective with who I work with – not because of having a big ego or because “you can’t sit with us” – I’m just a very articulate person and a perfectionist to the point where I’m borderline annoying. The partnership with Khalid works well because we’re both passionate about what we do, we have a similar background and he’s very talented and creative. We were introduced by couple of mutual friends Kamran Hussain & Zarah Khan to work together at the Asian Wedding Fair– Khalid is the event organiser – and he invited me to direct the fashion show for the 2014 fair which happened in February. We had such a good response, I really didn’t expect it to be so well received by the people of Sheffield.

I love black clothing because I travel a lot and it’s universal. You can wear it to anything – a wedding, funeral, dinner and going out. I do wear denim but you’ll usually only ever see me in a black jacket and black shoes or trainers.

De Montford Hall, Leicester Indian playback superstar Mamta Sharma will be appearing for the first time and for one time only at Leicester’s De Montford Hall. The singer is responsible for the hit ‘Munni Badnaam Hui’ from the blockbuster film ‘Dabaang’, which earnt her a Filmfare award for Best Playback Female Singer, as well as a plethera of nominations at various awards ceremonies.

Playing alongside Mamta Sharma will be Yashraj Kapil who won the reality TV show ‘Sitaron Ko Choona Hai’ in 2009. The singer, who later went on to appear in ‘Indian Idol 5’, has had his songs featured in films such as ‘Policegiri’, and is ideal to feature beside Mamta Sharma.

Literature Festival //// 6th May - 21st May

Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, London If you’re a bookworm or budding writer interested in Asian literature then this is the perfect event for you.

The festival, which is now in its eighth year, helps promote the reading and writing of Asian literature, with a variety of different speakers and events based around prominent areas of the industry.

This year’s speakers include a number of major award winning writers including headline speaker Hanif Kureishi who will be discussing his new novel ‘The Last Words’. Other writers appearing at the event include Kamila Shamsie, Tash Aw, and Romesh Gunesekera.

If all this book talk seems a little dry for your tastes, worry not there are also shows on British Asian comedy, with Anil Gupta, Vietnamese food and family events that include origami, music and tai chi.
