August 15 Santa Marija

August is the peak of holiday season for most and the Maltese Islands host all sorts of visitors from those looking to enjoy the sun and beaches to those interested in culture and the various sites located across the islands. The climax of the Maltese Summer is on the 15th August, a public holiday, with the celebration of the feast of Santa Marija, the Assumption of Our Lady. In Malta, this feast has a more special meaning because of the events which took place in 1942 when a convoy during Operation Pedestal which was a British operation to get desperately needed supplies to Malta during the Second World War. Malta was the base from which surface ships, submarines and aircraft attacked Axis convoys carrying essential supplies to the Italian and German armies in North Africa. In 1941–42,

Malta was effectively under siege, blockaded by Axis air and naval forces. To sustain Malta, the United Kingdom had to get convoys through at all costs. Despite serious losses, just enough supplies were delivered for Malta to survive, although it ceased to be an effective offensive base for much of 1942. The most crucial supply was fuel delivered by the SS Ohio, an American-built tanker with a British crew. The operation started on 9 August 1942, when the convoy sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar. The arrival of the last ships of the convoy on 15 August 1942, coincided with the Feast of the Assumption (Santa Marija) and the name Santa Marija Convoy is still used. That day's public holiday and celebrations, in part, celebrate the arrival of the convoy. The attempt to run fifty ships past bombers, E-boats, minefields, and submarines has gone down in military history as one of the most important British strategic victories of the Second World War. However, it was at a cost of more than 400 lives, with only five of the original fourteen merchant ships reaching the Grand Harbour.

Malta - The Great Story Of A Small Island Nation Through 100 Objects

Heritage Malta's National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta is currently hosting an engaging exhibition entitled 'Malta – The Great Story of a small Island Nation through 100 Objects'. It narrates the story of Malta, from its geological formation some 35 million years ago to EU accession in 2004. The 100 objects were expertly chosen from the national collection to mirror the essence of the Maltese Islands and the identity of their people. The Islands’ minuscule proportions and lack of valuable mineral resources are amply compensated for by their strategic location at the centre of the cradle of civilization, the Mediterranean. Lying approximately 90 km south of Sicily, 300 km east of Tunis and 350 km north of Libya, Malta stands at the crossroads of southern Europe, north Africa and the Middle East, and every cultural wave that rippled across the land-locked sea from late prehistory onwards is invariably captured in its intriguing cultural legacy.

The storyline is fashioned in twelve phases. The first is dedicated to geology and the colonisation by prehistoric flora and fauna, the following ten mirror the prevailing chronologic succession following the arrival of the first Neolithic settlers, while the twelfth and concluding phase deals with post-independent Malta. Each of the twelve chapters is set in context by a brief introduction highlighting the major contemporaneous developments in the Mediterranean region. The most remarkable occurrences and endeavours of the respective twelve phases are, in turn, represented by a corresponding number of varying objects, or occasionally, groups of artefacts. As expected, the compliment of objects varies from one phase to the other. The Late Neolithic, the Classical period, the stay of the Knights of St John, and the British tenure feature a more abundant compliment due to their high profiled standing in human history or lasting imprint in Malta’s socio-cultural DNA. Indeed, a unique opportunity to explore the most representative artefacts of Malta’s great story under one roof. The exhibition is open daily from 08.00hrs till 19.00hrs (last admission at 18.15hrs).

Traditional Maltese Ice Cream

As Summer is at its peak and it is just the right time to enjoy a good ice cream, why not try the traditional Maltese ice cream? Known by locals as the ice cream served at weddings, this cinnamon ice cream dates back as long as to the Arab times. It is known that the Knights of St. John used to ship ice from Mount Etna in Sicily to make their ice cream. Until about fifty years ago, cinnamon ice cream was the treat in most Maltese weddings. Why cinnamon in particular as a wedding day special? The spice would probably have been expensive in days gone by – even in a country slap bang on the Spice trading routes since ancient times – hence its use at occasions rather than every day. It’s one of the creamiest, smoothest, subtlest but enriching ice creams you can ever savour. It works equally as well in summer as winter (think of it melting into a good chunky homemade apple pie or crumble). Eating an ice cream like this one on a hot midsummer day makes you appreciate just how rare a treat ice cream would have been in Malta in times past. So ask for it in the many traditional Maltese restaurants around Malta and Gozo.
