Valletta And The Dominicans: A Common Journey

Valletta and the Dominicans: A Common Journey is an exhibition narrating how the story of the City of Valletta has often intertwined with that of the Dominican Community in the capital. Both took their first steps in the years following the Great Siege of 1565 when, without delay, Grand Master de Valette thought of constructing this fortified city to protect Malta from another Ottoman attack. Due to the lack of necessary funds, the main benefactor was the Dominican Pope St Pius V, who sent 30,000 silver florins and his engineer Francesco Laparelli, so that on 28 March 1566 the first stone of the City of Valletta was laid.

For two whole years the Dominicans would cross from their Convent in Vittoriosa to the new city in order to assist the 4000 workers constructing the bastions. It was for this reason that Fr Damiano Taliana, Prior of the Annunciation Convent and Provincial Vicar of the Dominican convents in Malta, asked to be given a location to build a church and a convent. Grand Master Pietro del Monte accepted his request and in 1571 a Dominican community established itself permanently and built a new church dedicated to St Mary of Porto Salvo and St Dominic for the devotion of sailors.

On 18 March 1571, the Knights officially moved from Vittoriosa to Valletta, while on the 19 April the first stone of the Church of Porto Salvo was laid. On 2 July 1571, through the Apostolic Bill Ex Debito Pastorali Officcii, Pope Pius V declared the Church of St Mary of Porto Salvo and St Dominic as the main parish and matrix of the new city in its entirety.

This exhibition will delve into the Dominican mission in the Valletta story, the spiritual comfort it offered to the Valletta community, especially in times of distress, the contribution of the parish confraternities and the Dominican artistic heritage and personalities.

The initial presence of the Dominicans among the city’s builders, evolved into a 500 year rich and inseparable history. In the year in which we are celebrating the City of Valletta as the European Capital of Culture, this exhibition will help us appreciate the rich historical, socio-cultural and artistic legacy left by the Dominican Order as reflected in the development of Valletta.

The exhibition, Valletta and the Dominicans: a common journey, relies on eight different themes which are The Dominican Legacy, Valletta Legacy, Religious Legacy – the Spiritual wellbeing of the Valletta Community, The Archconfraternity of Our Lady of the Rosary and Mercy, The Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, The Confraternity of St Vincent Ferreri, Artistic Heritage and Personalities linked to the Dominican Order in Valletta.

Heritage Malta and the Parish of St Mary of Porto Salvo and St Dominic have teamed up for an exhibition of paintings, prints, manuscript volumes, object d’art, vestments and curious paraphernalia from the national and Parish collections to narrate

Malta Jazz Festival

This year’s edition of the Malta Jazz Festival runs from 16 to 21 July will be a special one, with iconic performers as well as an attractive world jazz element, seeing as Valletta the European Capital of Culture. Following from last year’s success, the festival will also feature free lunchtime concerts as well as masterclasses. The festival boasts three of the biggest names in jazz today, namely Chick Corea, Christian McBride and Karim Ziad. Held in various venues across Valletta’s historical setting, the festival promises to be one of the highlights of the summer festivals, presenting an eclectic range of styles which make up the contemporary jazz scene. The festival will open with three free events on 16 July: a concert featuring Vinny Vella on piano, singer Andreana Debattista, Anthony Saliba on bass and Joe Micallef on drums, just outside the Parliament Building. The all-embracing line-up of the festival stretches further boundaries this year with Karim Ziad, who will bring his unique blend of jazz, gnaoua and other North African rhythms to Malta. The Brazilian legend Joâo Bosco, which The New York Times described as

“one of Brazil’s most fabled guitarists, singers and composers” will be back in Malta to close this year’s special edition of the festival. The acts on Friday, 20 July will feature Christian McBride’s New Jawn, a killer tight and soulful unit. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing. Five-time Grammy winner Christian McBride’s path has seen a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. Also performing on the same day is the newly formed BOKANTÉ ensemble. Meaning ‘ensemble’ in Creole, BOKANTÉ is Snarky Puppy founder and GroundUP Music creator Michael League’s experiment. Eight musicians from four continents come together to create a diverse ensemble rich in groove, melody, and soul. The American jazz, and jazz fusion pianist, keyboardist and composer Chick Corea will be reunited with longtime brothers-in-music John Patitucci and Dave Weckl as the Chick Corea Trio on Saturday, 21 July. Expect Chick’s signature boundless energy on piano and brilliant songwriting, John’s

unparalleled mastery on the bass, and Dave’s unmistakable brilliance on drums.

Malta International Arts Festival

The Malta International Arts Festival (MIAF 2018) has been awarded the prestigious Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe (EFFE) label for the second time running. The label is a sign of a festival’s artistic commitment, community involvement and its international and global outlook.

The MIAF 2018, which runs from 29 June to 15 July, marks a special celebratory European Capital of Culture edition. In addition to the celebratory element, the festival also features an underlying humanitarian and political aspect throughout. This includes National Geographic photojournalist Reza Deghati’s Exile Voices, the story of refugees told by the refugees themselves, together with the poignant work of photographers Darrin Zammit Lupi and

The festival’s programme is its richest yet as it celebrates all the art forms from residence with the Italy-based company No Gravity, the premiere of a new work that stems from writer Immanuel Mifsud’s text and fuses other art forms with the work of visual artists Vince Briffa, physical actor Paul Portelli and musician Kris Spiteri. Debussy’s music is celebrated in a number of concerts as well as visually in Watercolour Madness, a watercolour exhibition by Kenneth Zammit Tabona.

The festival takes great pride in reaching out to the community and has programmed a plethora of street theatre, dance, music, visual art, cinematography, puppetry and alternative experiences, to name a few, by local and international artists, which will bring the city of Valletta to life. Highlights of the programme also include morning events, including performances by dancers and stilt artists as well as young bands in a specially designed structure. Look out for the travelling marionette theatre, Karromato, the interactive street and puppet theatre Alice’s Dreams, and Artibusk, a free-for-all day during which artists will perform, dance, paint, sing for passersby.
