GOZO CARNIVAL 1-5 MARCH Carnival is a colourful and fun celebration in Gozo. For five consecutive days, the island’s intense, natural Mediterranean blue and green are rivalled by the vibrant colours of carnival costumes and floats that meander through the main towns and villages in upbeat mood. Join the locals for five days of revelry, with young and old dressing up in intricate costumes or grotesque masks. Follow the Rabat parades with their floats and rhythmic dance for pure family fun. For an extravagant take on carnival, Nadur village is the unmissable choice. This carnival stems from village tradition and is essentially spontaneous. Here, the purpose of costumes is disguise. Tracing contrasts between Mdina and Ħal Safi in Early Medieval Malta

Two rescue archaeological excavations which were carried out by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage in Mdina in 2008 and in Ħal Safi in 2015 are shedding light on the medieval past of the Maltese Islands. This period is still relevantly unknown due to the scanty historical documentation available. Some of the archaeological remains which were recovered during these excavations are being displayed in Heritage Malta’s exhibition Core and Periphery: Mdina and Ħal Safi in the 9th and 10th centuries. The exhibition, set up in collaboration with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the University of Malta, is the first of a series which will introduce this fascinating epoch. The main aims of the exhibition are to stimulate scholarly discussion about Malta’s medieval inheritance and to increase public appreciation for this period. It also intends to acknowledge the strategic importance of rescue archaeological

services, while providing visibility to the results being obtained in the process. The exhibited ceramic typology which dates to the 9th and 10th centuries is presenting one of the least understood, yet crucial moments of change in Maltese medieval history. The selected artefacts help in the understanding of these dark centuries, particularly by highlighting the difference between life in the urban community of Mdina and that in the outlying agricultural hinterland settlements such in the territory of Ħal Safi. Archaeological finds indicate that Malta had a well-structured economy in the 9th and 10th centuries, and was not subjected to a long-lasting phase of abandonment after the 870 Arab invasion. Evidence points to the existence of a layered social structure which included an elite based in Mdina and peasantry working in rural sites like Ħal Safi.

18 MALTA & GOZO DAY BY DAY | FEBRUARY 2019

In 2008, during restoration and consolidation works on the eastern bastion walls of Mdina, an impressive early medieval stratigraphy was accidentally uncovered, thereby triggering a rescue excavation. Traces of military structures and recovered ceramics indicated that the area was inhabited by an elite which probably were both a military and a land owning class. They were also involved in wide-ranging trade contacts, as reflected in the discovery of expensive glazed and decorated ceramics which originated from different Mediterranean production centres. Ceramics found in this area were mostly produced in Byzantine regions and could be broadly dated to the late 9th century. The assemblage was dominated by amphora-like vessels, indicating the islands’ importance to international trade in this period.

Due to popular demand, the opening days of this exhibition at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, is being extended until 31st March 2019. Admission is free of charge. A new publication by Heritage Malta discusses in further detail these archaeological discoveries and includes illustrations and photos of the findings in Mdina and Ħal Safi. The publication is available for sale from all Heritage Malta sites and museums. Further information may be obtained from Heritage Malta’s website www.heritagemalta.org

Archaeological investigations in the area of Ħal Safi took place at a construction site in 2015. The feature consisted of an ancient bell-shaped water cistern inside which were found numerous ceramic fragments and animal bone. Such remains yielded important evidence about the continuation of rural settlement in Malta into the first half of the 10th century. Of the seventeen vessels identified at this site, sixteen were amphorae, and most were possibly imported from South Italy. Only one vessel belonged to a domestic form and it consisted of a locally produced Islamic hand-made cooking pot. To date, this is the oldest such medieval hand-made cooking pot to be identified in Malta. The vessel is an important indicator of changing cultural norms in early Islamic Malta, as this new type of cooking pot replaced the previously popular open, shallow casserole of the Byzantine tradition. This artefact can be viewed at the exhibition.

The Impossible Interview - St. Paul Saint Paul's Bay. 10th February. It is raining. On the beach there is some movement. Some fires have been lit. I can hear someone saying: "A Shipwreck," and another saying: "They are around 276 people". I get closer. I can see someone in the crowd, guarded by some soldiers; he must have been someone important. They tell me that his name is Paul of Tarsus, a Roman citizen on his way to meet the Emperor of Rome. I am trying to get more news.

About him William Shakespeare once said: "A saint for the Church, a great man for humanity, to him the future has been shown." The famous writer Igino Giordani wrote: "In him the genius conqueror like Alexander the Great and Caesar; his deepness reminds me of Plato; and his gentleness of Virgil." The great film director Pier Paolo Pasolini once said: "He is here, today, among us, he is talking to our society; and it is our society that makes him love and cries, threatens and forgives, attacks and gently hugs." ‌ Can you please explain to our readers what happened? He hugs me, as a gesture of gratitude for the generosity and solidarity he has received. "Long life to the Maltese People!" he said with tears in his eyes. Then he continues: "I know the seas. I have travelled a lot. I told the Centurion to postpone this trip. But no

one listened to me. The Centurion and the captain were convinced of the possibility of avoiding the storm! But obviously it was impossible to resist the Euroclydon." I heard that, despite the storm, the salvation of the crew depended on you! "Yes! I was convinced that everything would be solved for the better. So I encouraged sailors and passengers to have hope. Also because, an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, appeared to me, and he told me not to be afraid, because God will grant you the life of all those who sail with you." How did you experience these dramatic moments? "With great decision. When we glimpsed the land, we lightened the ship and the captain ordered to hoist the mainsail, so the ship could arrive in a safe place. But because the sea was very rough, we did not notice the rocks, so the ship ran aground destroying itself. We

Shipwreck in Valletta, and finally in The Shipwreck experience in Birkirkara." In that moment we were interrupted by the Centurion's voice asking one of the guards to take Paul to the Governor Publius's house. helped each other to arrive to the shore, where we discovered the great benevolence of the inhabitants!"

So I had to bid this charismatic man goodbye and wish him good luck!

I see in you a total dedication and love for the others‌ "It is part of my being an apostle of Christ. I identify myself with Him. And I give myself to everyone. Precisely as God gave all of himself to us. The passion of God for every man becomes for me the same passion for all human kind, so everyone may be saved. It is a passion that is also compassion. A passion with Christ towards mankind, and a passion with mankind towards Christ."

During the feast of Saint Paul’s Shipwreck, locals and tourists flock to see the statue and the churches decorated in celebration to their beloved saint in various parishes. This devotion to Saint Paul is still going strong on our island.

"All of us have been graced, forgiven, welcomed by Christ. How can we say to another: you not welcome! If I exclude anyone who is welcomed by Christ, I am actually putting myself out of that fraternal communion." "It is necessary to be prepared, to know. But then you need passion and love that drive you to go further. A lover cannot hide his feelings, his eyes will speak for him!" I am sure your presence here in Malta will leave a mark... "I confess to you that I had a vision, a dream. I would be staying in Malta for a few months. And the memory of my encounter with the Maltese people will remain‌ in Saint Paul's Bay, in San Pawl Milqi, in Saint Paul's Grotto in Rabat, in Naxxar, in the Collegiate Church of the
