SUMMER IN MALTA
Image: Blue Lagoon © Ted Attard - Ministry for Gozo
Spending a sunny summer on an island in the Med is all about commanding the beaches and controlling the surf. After which, once the sun settles beyond the horizon, you hit the town and make merry or you retreat to stroll the quiet village alleys and wonder where the Knights ventured at night. At a loss on how to spend you holidays in Malta? There are eight key Blue Flag Beaches in Malta and Gozo, which means that these get European recognition since they provide the best bathing water quality, plus lifesaving and disabled access facilities. These beaches include: St. George's Bay, Bu©ibba beach, Mellie˙a Bay, Qawra Point, Fond G˙adir in Sliema, G˙ajn Tuffie˙a Bay, Ramla l-Óamra in Gozo, Paradise Bay Hotel private beach and Golden Bay with the latter having been given the title of 'Beach of Quality'. There are beaches and beaches and everyone to his own. Whether you are just after getting a tan, want to ride the waves or dive beyond the surface to see the wonders hidden there, you get to find your ideal spot. Sand, rock, the ultimate scenic spot, blue lagoon water, sporting locations..... Summer on Malta is also about enjoying social life with a horde of festivals, weekly village 'festa's, lots of fireworks and plenty of good food to eat. These social events are the perfect way to close the day after a good dose of sunshine. If you'd rather spend the night away from the crowds, steer clear of the loud bangs of petards and head for any one of the hundreds of intimate restaurants ready to be discovered.

Victoria INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL The 16th Edition of the Victoria International Arts Festival in Gozo will this year be offering yet another five weeks of free top-notch performances by local and foreign musicians, to a total of 30 unique cultural events. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be inaugurating and closing the festival with a concert. Then there will be a series of Baroque concerts spread out over five days with key musicians hailing from Italy, England, Norway, Germany, Albania and Malta. The concerts offer an excellent opportunity to experience masterpieces produced with period instruments such as the viola da gamba, and the harpsichord. The Victoria International Arts Festival, as the brain child of the resident choir at St George's Basilica which is the principal parish church of Gozo, expands on the choir's main objective to cultivate and promote sacred music within the liturgical context, with particular emphasis on sacred polyphony. In this regard, the choir has a sound reputation as leading interpreter of polyphonic music of both the classic and the contemporary genres. The choir is also the first Maltese choir to perform as an all-female choir (SSAA), with its director of the Choir, Rev George Joseph Frendo, being also the Assistant Director of the Victoria International Arts Festival. The eclectic programme proves however, that artistic forms of diverse natures can co-exist in harmony. Varied musical genres are presented alongside exhibitions mounted in the cloister adjacent to the concert hall, plus pre-concert talks with scholarly programme notes provided for each event. The Friends of the Victoria International Arts Fesitval (VIAF) and varied local patrons actively participate through fund-raising activities, art auctions, exhibitions, etc. For more information visit www.stgeorge.org.mt www.viaf.org.mt

SUMMER TIME
A TIME FOR SOME LIGHT MALTESE FOOD Summer is a long season in Malta. Some people take to the sea after a long working day. Beaches are full of tourists who after visiting a place of interest relax on the sand or rocks. Some take a small snack with them to eat. The most popular local snack is ‘ÓobΩ biΩ-Ωejt’ (salad bread). This is made by smearing some tomato pulp on slices of bread. Then one spreads some olive oil and vinegar. The next step is to add salt, pepper, mint, chopped olives, capers and finely chopped onions. It is especially good when made with Maltese traditional bread, because of its soft fluffy texture and very crisp crust. In Malta there are two popular ‘tapas’ to taste during the long hot summer days:
Bigilla and ‘galletti’
One tasty summer snack is ‘bigilla’ and ‘galletti’. The ‘bigilla’ is made of broad beans, garlic and hot chilli pepper. This mixture is served in a small bowl. People then serve themselves by means of ‘galletti’ which are dipped inside this mixture. These ‘galletti’ are made of semolina. They are flat, round and a bit hard. The ‘galletti’ contrast well in taste with the soft texture of the ‘bigilla’. To compliment with the ‘galletti’ and ‘bigilla’, the Maltese take a glass or two of white local wine. The ’girgentina’ is very popular with this type of snack.
‘Ìbejniet’
Another summer snack is the ‘©bejniet’. Most of the farmers rear cows but in old villages folk still keep a goat and a sheep for their daily supply of milk. Sheep’s milk is excellent to make local cheeselets, known as ‘©bejniet’. These are available either fresh (friski), half-dried (moxxi) and peppered (tal-bΩar). The most popular ones are the peppered ones. They are placed on a small bowl and eaten accompanied by a piece of local bread, tomatoes, and olives. Sometimes instead of ‘©bejniet’ rikotta is used. This is a typical Mediterrean product which is sometimes home-made. The Maltese wash down these delicacies with strong local wine.

THE MALTESE BOAT
- THE DGÓAJSA
Image: Regatta - © DOI
The Grand Harbour, Malta’s chief port, has many tourist attractions. One of these is no doubt the ‘Dg˙ajsa’, the Malta traditional passenger boat. According to hearsay, the origins of this boat go back to the times of the Phoenicians. Some are of the opinion that this boat is older than the gondola. They also say that as it is lighter than its Venetian cousin it can go faster. Together with the ‘karozzin’ and the eight-pointed cross, it is one of Malta’s symbols. Due to a lack of an adequate quai inside the Grand Harbour, many Maltese boat rowers (barklori) earned a living by carrying, on their passenger boats, British sailors to and from their Royal Navy ships. The sailors of the British Royal Navy are now part of history. The ‘dg˙ajsa’ still survived thanks to Grand Harbour rowing clubs which compete against each other twice a year – Freedom Day (31st March) and the National Regatta (8th September) races. These races, which have been organised since the times of the knights, are very popular with the Maltese.
Image: Regatta - © DOI
The ‘dg˙ajsa’ used to generate lots of work particularly in places around the Grand Harbour’s historical cities, namely in Senglea and Vittoriosa. But the chief ‘dg˙ajsa’ builders centre was found at Kalkara, the Vittoriosa neighbouring village. Along the shore of this village there were many ‘dg˙ajsa’ craft centres/shops. Walking along the shore one could enjoy oneself watching these people at work. It was an entreprise which used to be inherited from father to son. In former days the ‘dg˙ajsa’ used to be powered by men rowing two wooden oars. These ‘barklori’ were usually well built people. By time these oars were replaced by outboard engines. The ‘dg˙ajjes’ (plural form of dg˙ajsa) still cross the waters of the Grand Harbour. A trip around the Grand Harbour’s many creeks is a wonderful experience both in the morning or at night.
