[WELCOME] Message From The Minister For Justice, Culture And Local Government

GOZO ALIVE

Thanks to MUŻA we have ushered in a new era for our culture and arts sector within our country.The successes achieved during 2018 and the previous years, which have brought us to this special year for the Maltese culture sector, will definitely not stop here. Housed in Auberge d’Italie, MUŻA is providing us with a living testament of our vision’s legacy, which we wish to impart to future generations. This project was possible thanks to decisions taken during the past couple of years, through which we have strengthened our investment, both financially and through more professionalisation within the sector, whilst giving more space to artists and creatives the ability to keep on establishing their talent, both locally and abroad. MUŻA is not only a museum, it also carries out an intrinsic role to welcome within it its public in a way that it provides art to the community through engagement, by placing them as protagonists in these successful achievements. From the beginning of this project, we have always felt the need that this new museum is not one which features the past, but one that looks into our future, translating into placing our communities in the centre of what we are doing. The carefully crafted cultural calendar for 2018 is a clear indication of the demand and need of a richer cultural programme, both from locals and from visitors as well. This project together with all the other ones which are being carried out, are to be a sound, inclusive cultural platform which appeals to all spheres of our society and beyond. MUŻA will definitely contribute to our country’s cultural, educational and touristic product, and it was thanks to the hard work of numerous entities, including Heritage Malta and its employees that all of this was possible, as well as other organisations in the cultural field, which also contributed to the realisation of such an ambitious project. I am also very grateful to our artists, who over the years understood the need for this step to be taken, to reach these achievements today. I urge them to continue to create more artistic works to further enrich our arts and culture sector. We still have other numerous projects in the pipeline within our capital city, including the Valletta Design Cluster, which aims to regenerate the lower part of Valletta as well as the regeneration project of the Grand Master’s Palace. We also have other projects in store across the island, including the Rock Hub project, the Carnival Experience project, and MICAS - the first ever-contemporary art space to grace our islands. It is Christmas time and Gozo is a very special place to be… Christmas celebrations in Gozo officially start on the 1st of December, with the inauguration of the Christmas lights in main public areas, including Victoria. This is a time when the island steps up to celebrate. Every village in Gozo is alight with activity, as enthusiastic volunteers decorate village streets and prepare intricate cribs – truly remarkable craftsmanship that adorns Gozo’s small villages with the warm Christmas spirit. Be there for the illumination of the Christmas lights in Victoria’s main street, choose your favourite activities from a brimming calendar, including excellent choir singing and end the festivities by witnessing the arrival of the Three Kings, on the 6th of January 2019.

MUŻA A New Concept Art Museum

On Saturday 10 November, Heritage Malta officially inaugurated Malta’s very own national-community art museum MUŻA; a €10 million investment, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. MUŻA is also the flagship project for Valletta’s 2018 European Capital of Culture title which shall carry forward the legacy of this unique occasion. MUŻA is being housed within the Auberge d’Italie; a 450-year old historical property which has been scheduled at Grade 1 by the Planning Authority. Interestingly, this auberge had already served as a museum in the 1920s when it was known as the Valletta Museum which included a section dedicated to art. Following further developments in 1974, the art collection was eventually displayed in another building in South Street Valletta which became known as the National Museum of Fine Arts. As the art collection increased, the need for a larger space and a more accessible location led to yet another move, this time to the Auberge d’Italie, which some defined as a ‘coming home’. Yet the ‘return to the origins’ really ends there since MUŻA was designed on totally different concepts. As the chosen

name indicates, the new art museum is all about inspiration, creativity and empowerment. Distancing itself from the idea of a sacred space designated for art experts, MUŻA is presenting itself as a cultural venue which blurs the boundaries between the objects and the public. This new approach which intends to attract individuals who are not habitual visitors of art museums is clearly evident in the sparingly use of text, particularly within galleries, with clear information that can be easily understood by all audiences. Technical information was also limited to what is absolutely necessary, while ideas were openly delivered in short sentences. MUŻA’s collection of well over 20,000 works of art presents inspiring stories with which to engage with a broad range of stakeholders, particularly communities. While displaying the best of the national collection, more than masterpieces and seminal works of art, the main aim is to enable access and participatory experiences. Strategically located at the heart of Valletta, MUŻA’s two entrances, one on Merchants Street and the other on Jean de Valette Square, serve as a fusion passageway which blends the museum and its collection to the capital city

and its spaces. Both inherent and newly introduced green-powered measures in this property accentuate the concept of a contemporary sensibility.

Further services are offered by a tourist information office and a concept store with quality products.

Ballet Poetry On the 30th December the Guangzhou Ballet shall be performing for the first time in Malta at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. They shall be performing to popular masterpieces such as Carl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’, Adolphe Adam’s ‘Giselle’, Boris Asafyev’s ‘Flames of Paris’ and China’s best known love story ‘Butterfly Lovers’. Guangzhou Ballet, one of the most outstanding artistic performance organizations, is characterized by rigorous standardized and passionate style of performance and world-renowned. Guangzhou Ballet has been persistently following the practices of creating high-level and various ballet operas, inviting some world well-known ballet masterpieces such as La Sylphide, and rehearsing excellent works of contemporary choreographers such as Serenade. Currently, Guangzhou Ballet has a wide repertoire of 16 large-scale dance operas and more than 70 small and medium-sized programs. Guangzhou Ballet develops a unique artistic style, specifically, the company inherits the fine cultural traditions, creates and performs a serious of original ballet operas, for example Return on a Snowy Night, Lanfang Mei and so on. Ballet is particular over fine form, visual magnificence and elegance. It can best show the strength in high-level artistic activities. Guangzhou Ballet won 38 international awards (including 9 gold awards), 156 awards in domestic various artistic competitions (including 20 gold awards). The dance opera Return on a Snowy Night was honored with “Wenhua Award” and covered all individual awards, which fully indicated that Guangzhou Ballet is the No. 1 among numerous renowned artistic performance organizations in China. Guangzhou Ballet has always been the major driving force in performances in the international exchanges and domestic first-tier cities. Guangzhou Ballet has held cultural exchange performances in more than 20 countries and regions, such as Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Australia, Germany and other places. Following the success of the first edition of the MCC Dance Showcase, schools and companies involved in the local dancing scene have been selected to participate in this year’s MCC Dance Showcase, produced and presented by the Mediterranean Conference Centre, due on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd December. Twenty-five dance schools shall perform on the first night dedicated to the schools. The Mediterranean Conference Centre is providing the stage to allow these students the opportunity to perform and ‘show off’ their talents in such a prestigious venue. Dance Showcase 2 will also include live music by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra to accompany the Dance. Dance Companies shall perform on the second night. This is a first for most Dance companies and a challenge in itself. Prof Maestro Micheal Laus was instrumental to ably co-ordinate the musical pieces with the diverse dances to produce a fantastic show for theatre and television.

This year the Principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Ballerina Maria Allash will be gracing the stage together with other ballet dancers from the prestigious Russian Bolshoi theatre. They will be performing part of the ‘Crystal Palace Ballet’ of the Maltese Composer Alexey Shor. Malta’s national contemporary Dance Company - Zfinmalta will also be dancing ‘Mesogeios’ an original piece by Maltese Maestro Christopher Muscat. The dance companies this year will perform to a very diverse repertoire of music that include classical ballet, Spanish dance, contemporary, folk, cabaret and modern dance to provide an evening of variety and fun to please the tastes of all types of audiences. Sunday 9 December – Sunday 6 January 2019 Ghajnsielem Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem 2018 Somewhere, on a tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean, several local volunteers are in the final-touches stage for the 10th edition of Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem, the event that has enchanted thousands of visitors over the past two years. The nativity village is situated adjacent to the Għajnsielem main square, on the island of Gozo, just 5 minutes by walk from Mgarr Harbour. Appropriately called “Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem”, this life-size crib, constructed on 20,000 square metre (sqm) of fields on a stretch of land known as Ta’ Passi, comes to life during the month of December with about 150 actors taking visitors back in time to Judea of 2000 years ago. The atmosphere will simply be unique… horses turn mills, villagers go about their jobs, shepherds inhabit caves, animals roam in enclosed spaces and a poor unknown couple tend their newly-born in a grotto... It promises to bring the timeless Christmas story to life as never before.
