A centre of Maritime excellence in the Med. A message from the Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Joseph Muscat
It is a great pleasure to welcome all participants in European Maritime Day 2013 to Malta. I hope you immerse yourself in our fascinating history and enjoy our vibrant culture. You are gathering to celebrate the seas and oceans, and the opportunities they bring, and there is no finer place to do that than Malta. Our entire population can boast they are no more than a few miles from coastline. The sea wraps itself around us. It is the place where we swim and play, and it provides work too. It has shaped us more than we possibly know, contributing to the Maltese spirit. Throughout the centuries the seas were important for commerce, and that remains true today. The shipyards may no longer dominate but sea freight brings us goods from around the world, fishermen still get their daily catch and now we delight in seeing luxurious cruise liners dock in Grand Harbour. The Maltese Government is giving renewed impetus to the maritime industry because it believes that with nourishment and investment, the sector will grow, creating both wealth and jobs. Europe’s economy has been through a turbulent period. The maritime industry can aid recovery, especially if managed carefully and through cooperation across Europe. This year’s conference will consider how investment in maritime tourism should generate blue growth and employment while at the same time guarantee sustainable development in coastal regions. It is an opportunity to debate today’s challenges and concentrate on specific areas such as the cruise sector, connectivity and mobility, as well as the Mediterranean region. To celebrate this important occasion fun and informative activities are taking place on Sunday 19th and Monday 20th of May. No fewer than fifty events are being held in different locations around Malta and Gozo. These represent local heritage, culture, the arts, sport, leisure, education, industry and transport, as well as tourism. European Maritime Day is being organised by the European Commission (Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries), in collaboration with the Malta Ministry for Economy, Investment and Small Business and the Malta Ministry for Tourism. It is another example of Europe coming together, celebrating our shared heritage. One thing I’m sure you will recognise is that Malta, surrounded by sea, has the potential to become a centre of Maritime Excellence in the Mediterranean. You being here is helping to make that happen. You are most welcome.

European Maritime Day 2013 European Maritime Day has been celebrated each year on 20 May since 2008. Its aim is to provide an occasion to highlight the crucial role that oceans and seas play in the everyday lives of all EU citizens. As a maritime nation Malta is proud to be hosting the 2013 European Maritime Day Conference, focusing on sustainable coastal and maritime tourism in the wider context of Blue Growth.
During European Maritime Day, tribute is paid to “Maritime Europe. All maritime sectors and activities are put in the spotlight to help European citizens realise the outreach and variety of sea-related activities taking place in Europe. In this context a series of public events will be organised in Malta and Gozo on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 May, 2013, ranging from academic, popular, artistic, sportive, maritime and others. The aim is to show, promote, discuss and celebrate the value of the long-standing maritime tradition in our islands, as well as various policies related to the seas. Public Focal Events Government entities, corporations, Local Government, co-operatives, national organisations, companies, volontury organisations and others that in any direct or indirect way are related to the maritime sector in its widest sense, are organising public events that are, directly or indirectly, related to the sea for a wide audience, including children, youths, adults, families, the elderly, tourists and also corporate clients. There are several Public Focal events in different locations around Malta and Gozo, with a concentration of these in Valletta. Public Peripheral Events Performing artists are engaged to create a trail of continuity and liveliness in the Valletta zone encompassing Republic Street, St George’s Square, Merchants Street, the Upper Barrakka, Lascaris Ditch (Lift) and Valletta Waterfront. The performing artists are subdivided into two segments: mobile artists, including marching bands, folk groups and other interactive individuals and groups, who will follow the trail mentioned above every hour; and music stage artists, including youth orchestras, bands and more at the Upper Barrakka Gardens at different times of the day. The latter will address a wide audience, including children, youths, adults, families, the elderly, passers-by, tourists and also corporate clients. These activities will be held during Sunday and Monday between 10:00 and 18:00.

NOTTE GOZITANA LEJLET LAPSI THIS YEAR WILL HERALD THE SEVENTH EDITION OF NOTTE GOZITANA LEJLET LAPSI, AN ALL NIGHT FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN VICTORIA, GOZO. THIS EXTREMELY POPULAR NIGHT OF FUN IS ORGANISED BY THE MINISTRY FOR GOZO AND WILL BE ON FRIDAY 10TH – SATURDAY 11TH MAY (WITH A SOFT ENDING ON THE SUNDAY). When Notte Gozitana started seven years ago it was held in various districts around the island. However the Ministry realised that festival-goers prefer to have a more localised event – this enhances the festival experience as crowds don’t spread too thin - so it has now been based in Victoria for a few years. The organisers try to identify new main areas for the activities. Two years ago the main events took place up in the Citadel, and last years’ events were concentrated in the narrow streets. This year, it’s back to the town centre as the main base with several events also happening in the Citadel. Although there is also a fair share of Maltese talent, this year the organisers also want to showcase Gozitan talent as much as possible, and participants have been chosen after expressing interest and applying to take part. As they recognise that many festival-goers come over from Malta and spend the weekend in Gozo, the organisers decided to have an opening on Friday so that visitors crossing over will have more days of fun to enjoy.

Programme highlights include period costume historical parades and re-enactments along the main streets of Victoria; a concert by popular band ‘Airport Impressions’; a children’s area in Savina Square; various indoor classical music concerts; folklore music & dance; chillout stages with live bands; a vintage car show; musical drama in Maltese and a variety of art exhibitions. A couple of years ago, a very successful event was added to the festival – Saturday tours that include transport to various cultural heritage sites like towers, chapels and monasteries; tours to Eco-Gozo sites and Gozitan flora and fauna; boat tours to see the coastal formation of Gozo; and also walking tours around Victoria incorporating chapels, shelters and the narrow streets. As usual Notte Gozitana - Lejlet Lapsi will provide added attractions besides those which Gozo normally offers visitors to the island at this time of year. This year’s event will offer interesting grand shows on Friday and Saturday besides many other attractions under the stardust capital city Victoria.

THE MALTESE FTIRA
Images: Nenu The Artisan Baker, Valletta
THE RESTORATION AND CONVERSION OF AN OLD DISUSED BAKERY SITUATED IN ST. DOMINIC STREET, IN THE SOUTHERN AREA OF VALLETTA, ON THE WAY FROM ST. JOHN’S CO-CATHEDRAL TO FORT ST. ELMO CREATED A PLACE WHERE THE ART OF BREAD AND TYPICAL MALTESE FOOD-MAKING COULD BE VIEWED, TASTED AND APPRECIATED. 'NENU THE ARTISAN BAKER' IS THE PLACE IN THE CAPITAL CITY WHERE ONE CAN EXPERIENCE MALTESE CULINARY DELIGHTS. Not only has that goal been achieved but the location has become a living museum, interspersed with artifacts involved in the manufacture and selling of bread, dating back to the days when bread-making involved a great deal of manual work and selling bread was done using horse-drawn carts. Guests have the possibility of tasting freshly baked produce in a serene ambience. A speciality at Nenu The Artisan Baker is the Maltese 'Ftira', which is a traditional dish with a variety of different toppings to suit individual tastes. At first glance the 'ftira' looks like a pizza but the base is made from Maltese bread dough which makes it unique in taste. Cooked in a traditional bread baking oven, this gives the exclusive experience of the past when households used to take their Sunday roast to be cooked at the local bakery. To taste this culinary experience, at Nenu The Artisan Baker, you'll find a vast selection of 'ftajjar', each named in typical Maltese names and nicknames. To complement your meal at Nenu's we recommend that you finish off with a typical Maltese dessert and Maltese coffee.

Mattia Preti
AFTER THE VICTORY OF THE GREAT SIEGE, THE KNIGHTS OF THE ORDER OF ST JOHN BUILT A NEW CITY, WHICH THEY CALLED VALLETTA. THEY SURROUNDED IT BY FORTIFICATIONS AND ERECTED ‘AUBERGES’, PALACES, CHURCHES AND OTHER BUILDINGS. THESE HAD TO BE EMBELLISHED BY WORKS OF ART. FOR THIS PURPOSE, THEY INVITED SEVERAL FOREIGN AND LOCAL PAINTERS TO WORK FOR THEM. ONE OF THEM WAS MATTIA PRETI, KNOWN AS IL CAVALIERE CALABRESE.

Mattia Preti was born in a small town of Taverna, in Calabria. He moved to Rome and then to Spain, the Netherlands and Northern Italy. On his return to Naples, he found out that the artistic scene was dominated by Solemena, so he tried to find a place where he could work without worrying about rivals. Meanwhile he had been admitted as a knight of Grace in the Order of St John. Mattia paid a visit to Malta, the Orders’ headquarters, in an attempt to improve his standing within the Order. Instead he was invited to decorate the vault of the Order’s principal church – the Conventual church of St John (today St John's Co-Cathedral) in Valletta. This ‘project’ enlightened his ambitions. He could not move to Malta immediately due to the number of commissions he had to paint. Mattia Preti sent a sample of his work which was a large canvas showing St George on Horseback. This painting reached the Order by 1656 and it caused a great sensation. When Mattia Preti arrived he started to work on the vault of St John. He did not want to paint the ceiling using the fresco technique. But instead he painted directly in oils on the porous stone. This work shows 18 episodes from the life of St John the Baptist. Mattia produced other paintings for this historic church. These works can be found as altarpieces, secondary pictures and lunettes. The Valletta Museum of Fine Arts has a hall full of his paintings. In this room, one can admire the Beheading of St Catherine which once belonged to the Palace collection, the Credulity of St Thomas and the Baptism of Christ. The Cathedral Museum of Mdina houses one painting of Mattia Preti which shows the Mocking of Christ. Other Preti works are found at the Verdala Palace chapel, at Tal-Mirakli chapel at Lija as well as at the parish churches of Ûurrieq, Si©©iewi and Luqa.

THE
Mdina
CATHEDRAL
CROWNING THE WALLS OF THE ANCIENT CAPITAL OF MDINA STANDS THE MAJESTIC BUILDING OF THE CATHEDRAL. ITS BUILDING OVERLOOKS THE WHOLE COUNTRYSIDE AND HAS BEEN PAINTED AND PHOTOGRAPHED THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS, THE CATHEDRAL WAS BUILT IN MDINA TOWARDS THE END OF THE 12TH OR THE BEGINNING OF THE 13TH CENTURY. THIS CATHEDRAL WAS BADLY DAMAGED DURING THE 1693 EARTHQUAKE. Reconstruction of the cathedral was immediately taken in hand and the new cathedral has a baroque style with a well proportioned facade, with three vertical bays on two storeys, divided by Corinthian pilasters. The belfries contain six bells, the oldest of which was cast in Venice in 1370. The facade’s clocks, one showing the hour and the other the day and month were made by Michelangelo Sapiano in 1888. Over the main door, there are three coat-of-arms, in the centre there is the coat-of-arms of the City of Mdina, flanked by those of the Grand Master Perellos and of Bishop Cocco-Palmieri. The interior plan is in the form of a Latin Cross, with a nave of three bays, aisle chapels, wide transepts and an enclosed chapel on either side of the chancel. The nave and part of the aisles are paved with inlaid marble slabs commemorating Maltese ecclesiastics and a few prominent laymen. The ceiling was painted in fresco with scenes from the life of Saint Paul. They are the work of the Sicilian artists – Antonio and Vincenzo Manno. The dome paintings were made by Mario Caffeiro Rore of Turin, with scenes representing the Glory of St Peter and St Paul. The baptismal font is a survivor of the old cathedral. It was presented by Bishop Giacomo Valguarnera in 1495. On the other hand the white marble statue of St Publius and the two marble lecterns in the chancel representing the Evangelists St Luke and St John are the works of Giuseppe Valenti of Palermo. Between these chapels there is a fine Irish oak door another survivor of the old cathedral. The chapel of the Blessed Sacrament contains an ancient painting of the Madonna and Child, ascribed to St Luke. The High Altar is inlaid with lapeslazuli and other precious marble while the apse contains a fresco and paintings by Mattia Preti. On the right of the chancel is the Crucifixion chapel, decorated with a 17th Century crucifix by Fra Innocenzio de Petralia. However, the paintings on the right aisle are mostly by pupils and followers of Mattia Preti.
