WELCOME... Whilst wishing our readers a Happy New Year, we welcome you to Malta and Gozo. This month offers you more attractions than previous years because Valletta is the European Capital of Culture, so look out for events and attractions to take part in. Apart from events celebrating the beginning of the year, Valletta hosts the annual Baroque Festival in various venues around the capital. The mild Mediterranean climate makes it comfortable to enjoy and participate in these events as well as enjoying the local countryside.

HERZLICH WILKOMMEN... Wir wünschen Ihnen, unseren Lesern und Leserinnen, ein gutes neues Jahr und heißen Sie auf Malta und Gozo herzlich willkommen. In diesem Jahr finden wesentlich mehr Veranstaltungen statt als sonst im Januar, denn Valletta ist die Europäische Kulturhauptstadt. Achten Sie also auf Veranstaltungen und Attraktionen, die Sie nicht verpassen dürfen. Neben den zu Jahresbeginn üblichen Veranstaltungen begrüßt Valletta auch das jährliche Barockfestival, welches an verschiedenen Orten der Hauptstadt stattfindet. Das milde Mittelmeerklima zeigt sich als angenehm sowohl für die Besuche dieser Veranstaltungen als auch zu Spaziergängen in der freien Natur.

The 6th edition of the Valletta International Baroque Festival, a festival designed to enhance the baroque beauty of Malta’s capital city which in 2018 will be European Capital of Culture is just around the corner and takes place between the 13th and 27th January. Valletta was founded in 1566 after the Grandmaster who gave it its name, Jean Parisot de Valette, took the fateful decision not to abandon Malta which had been devastated by the Turkish siege the previous year. The decision to build a new city on Mount Sceberras changed Malta’s history forever. Straddling two harbours this tongue of land gradually became the most fortified city in the Mediterranean. Valletta was built on the site of a great conflict which along with the battle of Lepanto marked a turning point in Turkish ambitions in the Mediterranean. Coincidentally it was Pope Pius V, a scion of the aristocratic Ghislieri family in Pavia who

helped finance this ambitious project which enabled Malta of the Knights to rise like a phoenix from the ashes. It was this same Pius V who founded the Collegio Ghislieri in his own home city of Pavia in 1567 and we are very pleased to be presenting two beautiful concerts by the Ghislieri Choir and Consort: Fasti del Barocco Romano at St John’s Co Cathedral on the 15th January and Fasti del Barocco Napoletano at the Mdina Cathedral on the 19th January. Both concerts will be conducted by Giulio Prandi, one of Italy’s rising stars in the baroque firmament and with the participation of our own baroque soprano Claire Debono. There was no shortage of music in Valletta with composers learning their craft in the best Neapolitan tradition with greats like Francesco Durante alongside even greater geniuses like Gian Battista Pergolesi, baroque ensemble that performs in the historically correct manner on baroque instruments and to promote Maltese music by composers

like Abos, Zerafa, Vella and Azzopardi. Two concerts by VIBE comprise Maltese music from the 18th century and Purcell’s ethereal Funeral Sentences on the Death of Mary II while Collegium Orpheus under the direction of Jean Marc Labylle will perform Benigno Zerafa’s Messa a Due Cori. Centering around the Teatru Manoel, one of the oldest working theatres in Europe which also happens to be the only one in Europe that fulfils the role of a National Theatre, the Festival extends to the magnificence of St John’s Co-Cathedral and the Mdina Cathedral, the atmospheric Valletta churches, the splendid Grandmasters’ Palace, the auberges and other baroque edifices as well as historic venues such as Verdala Castle, the historic church of St Catherine in Zejtun and St. Lawrence’s Church and the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu. With 2018 being the European Capital of Culture plans for the Valletta International Baroque Festival have been ambitious. No stone has been left unturned in securing some of the best contemporary Baroque exponents of the moment, both from the international sphere as well as locally. Finally, the high calibre programme that has been put together should not only give this Festival the international status that it deserves but also extend the Baroque map of Europe to Malta. Valletta My City My Story A few days ago earmarked the beginning of a new year. 2018 is a significant year for Malta since our capital city, Valletta, is also the European Capital City of Culture. For this occasion Heritage Malta launched the book, Valletta – My City, My Story. This book narrates the early years of Valletta, and its inhabitants, which were brought back to life as the reader wanders through the beautiful streets, buildings, squares and ruins that dot the city; stories that will make you proud of your heritage. But what better way to learn about the history of a place than

to ask the protagonists of such history? This is what the book, Valletta – My City, My Story does. It calls to the stand none other than Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette, the architect who built a city ‘’by gentlemen for gentlemen’’. This book transports the readers to Malta exactly after the Ottomans left the island. Although there is great euphoria at this unexpected victory, the readers are also reminded of the devastation and loss such great battles leave behind. The Maltese and the Knights are faced not only with ruins and lack of resources but, also with an urgent need to rebuild the now ravaged fortifications in case of another siege in the following months.

De Valette with his sense of duty, and humorous narratives, guides the readers through what actually went through the hearts and minds of those who built this city, the myriad of regulations, decisions, endless meetings and, inevitably heated discussions, which ultimately led to the birth of Valletta, nowadays recognised by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Apart from little known insights about the buildings which dot the city, the book offers numerous anecdotes and information about the people, that is the Knights, the Maltese and other nationals from all corners of the world, who gave life to this wonderfully cosmopolitan city. This book is the third Heritage Malta Publishing title with a specifically young audience in mind. The first volume was, L-Ewwel 35,000,000 Sena ta’ Ħajti, inspired by the large scale exhibition of Malta: the great story of a small island-nation, held in 2014 as part of the national celebrations commemorating the 50 years of Independence, 40 years from the establishment of the Republic, 35 years from the departure of the foreign military forces, and 10 years of membership in the European Union. The other volume was A Bird’s Eye View of the Great Siege linked to the national commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the Great Siege of 1565. It has also been issued in Maltese under the name L-Assedju l-Kbir... Farka, Farka with the collaboration of the Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes within the Ministry of Education and Employment. The Maltese version was distributed for free to all Year 6 students across Malta and Gozo. Valletta – My City, My Story is the first of a series of four books dedicated to the walled cities of Malta. The forthcoming three titles are Mdina – A Medieval City with a Baroque Façade; Cottonera – Three Cities behind Brothers-in-Arms; and Ċittadella – Echoes from a City in Ruins.

The Feast Of St Anthony The Abbott

One of the oldest feats celebrated in the Maltese Islands, the feast of St Anthony The Abbot is celebrated on Sunday 14th January. Famous for the blessing of animals St Anthony the Abbot is looked upon as the protector of animals. There are several places where this ceremony takes place but the oldest one is that which takes place in front of the Church of St Mark, next to Saqqajja, Rabat, in the morning. The feast starts with a solemn mass in honour of St Anthony the Abbot. When mass is over, a procession follows throughout the nearby Rabat and other villages streets. The procession is typically Maltese. In Rabat, we find members of the confraternity of St Anthony the Abbot, members of the Augustinian friars and altar boys. The major attraction of this procession is the statue of the saint which is carried shoulder-high by members of the confraternity. Before the statue there will be the band players of the lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Isle Adam Band, one of the bands of this locality.

When the procession reaches again the church square, the band players take their place at one of the corners of the square. The small square will be already full of devotees together with their farm or domestic animals. Then the statue is placed in front of the church facade, facing the devotees and the friars take their place in front of the statue. A ‘defile’ of animals and their owners is formed in the street in front of the church. This is always headed by some of the mounted police and their horses. Some farmers follow. These usually bring their farm animals in Maltese carts (karrettuni). Other members of the public, especially children follow with their pets. This is when the animals are blessed with holy water. This ceremony is not only carried out at Rabat. A similar celebration is held, at Xaghra, Gozo, Mosta and other localities.

Valletta 2018 The Festa Is Here

With our European Capital of Culture tenure right around the corner, preparations are well underway for what will be one of Malta’s biggest celebrations to date. We are sure that 2018 is going to be memorable, and we can’t wait to kick-off our island-wide festa with you. Four Squares (Erba’ Pjazez) in Valletta will each be hosting an original spectacle on the evening of the 20th of January 2018 – the day in which Valletta 2018 becomes European Capital of Culture. Each display will be 20 minutes long, and will be happening every hour on the hour starting at 7pm, with the last display taking place at 11pm, so visitors to the capital during this special evening will not miss out. The Spanish theatre company La Fura dels Baus will host a spectacular aerobatic choreographed performance in Triton Square (Il-Qawma tat-Tritoni), while in St George’s Square ŻfinMalta will be hosting a modern dance featuring dancers interacting with projected visuals (Qalbna). A brand new choral symphony will be premiered on the steps of St John’s Cathedral (Elfejn u Tmintax) and 3D mapping projections will illuminate the façade of the Auberge de Castille (Minn Qiegħ l-Imgħoddi għall-Quċċata tal-Ġejjieni). During the week leading up to the Opening, those visiting the city of Valletta can experience a programme of activities which includes workshops, exhibitions, literary events, musical and theatrical performances, sports and educational projects, amongst others. There’s something for everyone to enjoy during the week starting from the 14th of January, with celebrations carrying on until the 21st January.

During this exciting week people can visit the crypt and war shelters beneath the 500 year-old Agostinian Convent (An Angle on the Anglican), take a walk through Valletta’s football history in an exhibition (L-Iljuni tal-Futbol), participate in the children’s version of the local feast of St Paul (San Pawl taż-Żgħar), watch a performance using theatrical elements to reflect the diverse nature of people’s dreams (Ħolm Butik), watch a traditional Regatta (rowing event) in Marsamxett Harbour (Aqdef, isa!) and so much more. Our festa does not end there – this year will be full of exciting projects, with more than 400 events taking place throughout our European Capital of Culture year.
