SUMMER FUN

Golden Bay © Clive Vella - viewingmalta.com

THE DAY AND NIGHT OF A MALTESE SUMMER SPENT IN THE OPEN ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THE ONE FROM THE OTHER, EVEN WHILST BOTH BELONGING TO ISLAND LIVING THAT ALLOWS EVERY VISITOR THE ENJOYMENT OF SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY… OR NIGHT!

Starting out early in the day allows you to travel relatively easily at least where the heat is concerned. Travel to the north west part of Malta to find three gorgeous golden sandy beaches. The first is true to its description and is rightfully called Golden Bay. In close proximity is G˙ajn Tuffie˙a and further on you can find the more secluded Ìnejna Bay. The surrounding undulating hills and excellent to climb but most people tend to prefer enjoying the sea and the breeze with the easy availability of deck chairs, ice lollies and sun shades. Venturing further afield, why not catch a boat to the tiny island of Comino whereon you can discover the magic of the Blue Lagoon. Again, early travel is recommended to secure your spot on the rocks above the turquoise waters, and enjoy a dip in limpid sea whose colours are truly mesmerizing for their beauty. You can opt to swim, snorkel, sunbathe or wander around to discover the diverse bays around Comino. Arm yourself with drinking water, hat and sun lotion as there is little shade available along the way.

Blue Grotto © Mario Galea - viewingmalta.com

Once the sun sets on Malta, it is best to wander in the open and seek out any one of the top notch restaurants around in Valletta, Sliema, Bu©ibba or Cottonera’s Senglea and Vittoriosa. Check out where the next village feast is happening if you’re on the islands on a weekend, and dive into this Mediterranean tradition of feting the saints. It is a great opportunity to take myriads of pictures, filled with colour and confetti, fireworks and brass bands.

If you’re planning on staying further south in Malta, check out the Blue Grotto in Ûurrieq, only a short distance away from the Malta International Airport. Again, this area is enriched with a multitude of sea caverns that are usually the haunt of diving expeditions in which you can also participate.

WHAT IS THE QUALITY COAST AWARD? IT IS A EUROPEAN AWARD THAT HAS DONE THE ISLANDS OF GOZO AND COMINO PROUD SINCE THEY WON THE BRONZE AWARD IN JUNE 2012. THE ISLANDS RANKED THIRD AMIDST 100 OTHER COASTAL TOURIST DESTINATIONS AROUND EUROPE. THE AIM OF THIS PRIZED AWARD IS TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE COASTAL DESTINATIONS OFFERING VIEWS AND NATURAL LANDSCAPES TOGETHER WITH OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS LOCAL IDENTITY, NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, AND A CLEAN MARINE ENVIRONMENT.

It would be fitting, whilst you’re here on the islands, to visit some particularly picturesque locations around Gozo’s coastline. Consider for instance Dwejra which is where you can also get a view of the legendary Fungus Rock and the spectacularly suggestive Azure Window. The Fungus Rock, locally known as Il-Gebla tal-General, alias The General’s Rock, recalls an Italian General who died centuries ago in the area. The rock which is out of bounds was once also the home of a protected species of plant holding medicinal and healing properties. Apparently the plant was so prized that during their permanence on the islands, the Knights of Malta had the rock heavily guarded against illegal picking of the plant. A surprise architectural find in the vicinity is St. Anne Chapel, which was built in 1963.

Also on Gozo is Ramla Bay, a very popular sandy beach typically appreciated for its golden-reddish sand colour – the colour actually lends its name to the bay so the locals refer to it as Ramla il-Hamra which means red sandy beach. In this case, the surprise find is the legendary cave of Calypso which is linked to Homer’s tales on the wanderings of Odysseus. Close by one also finds some archaeological remains from the Roman era. Xlendi on the southern part of the island of Gozo is particularly popular with diving enthusiasts due to its reef formations. However it allows great swimming for young and old with seaside dining right at the water’s edge.

STUFFAT TAL-BEBBUX BL’ARJOLI

THE FRENCH EAT THEM WITH RELISH, BUT THEN AGAIN SO DO THE MALTESE. THE FRENCH ESCARGOTS ARE HAUTE CUISINE IN FRANCE BUT IN MALTA, THE SNAILS WHICH ARE CALLED BEBBUX IN THE MALTESE LANGUAGE ARE TRANSFORMED COMPLETELY. THIS VERY REFINED FRENCH DISH IS PREPARED IN AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MANNER AT THE HANDS OF A MALTESE COOK OR CHEF, THUS BECOMING TYPICALLY MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND FARE. One of the most typical and traditional dishes involving snails is Stuffat Malti tal-Bebbux bl’Arjoli (Maltese Farmhouse Stew of snails with Arjoli). Arjoli is a garlic dip composed of a mixture of garlic, tuna, tomato paste, onion, olives, anchovies, bread, fresh herbs, chilli and oil and the concoction is excellent when paired with snails. The Arjoli dip is also served with ‘ÓobΩ biΩ-Ωejt u kunserva’, which is a typical Maltese bread spread with tomato paste and drizzled with oil. The best way to eat Bebbux is to sample them in the traditional way and one of the best traditional Maltese cuisine restaurants is Ta’ Marija Restaurant, in Mosta. Maltese Extravaganza Nights are held every Wednesday and Friday night when strumming mandolins and guitars accompany traditional and popular song and dance. Extremely popular with visitors from all nationalities, the Maltese dining extravaganza is accompanied by a Maltese Folklore show with six dancers in traditional costumes, accompanied by the charming restaurant host Maria Muscat.

THE MALTA JAZZ FESTIVAL HAS BECOME A WELL-APPRECIATED INTERNATIONAL EVENT THAT IS WIDELY ATTENDED AND THIS IS UNDERSTANDABLE, SINCE THE FESTIVAL HAS BEEN A STAPLE SUMMER EVENT ON THE ISLAND FOR THE PAST 21 YEARS. EACH YEAR, A STUNNING SELECTION OF PERFORMERS TINGE THE LANGUID SUMMER NIGHTS WITH THEIR BEAT AND THIS YEAR WILL BE NO EXCEPTION. For its 22nd edition, Malta Jazz Festival which is due to start on July 19th and stretch until July 21st, is once again being held within the ambience of Ta' Liesse within the capital city Valletta's Grand Harbour. Contemporary jazz will take to centre stage whether it is cutting-edge jazz or flamenco fusion, whether vocal or Latin.

proceed with Terri Lyne Carrington’s The Mosaic Project, Terri Lyne Carrington being a Grammy award nominee of international stature. Saturday will be the last day of the festival during which even more especially selected performers will run the show. A local duo – the Carlo Muscat/Alex Bezzina Project composed of a tenor saxophonist and trumpeter, will be accompanied by a series of other musicians. Then one can enjoy music from ‘The World Through my Shoes’. Also present will be some flamenco with jazz from the Chano Dominquez Flamenco Sketches which will also includes a dance performance. The Festival is organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts under the artistic direction of Sandro Zerafa. Further information may be found on www.maltajazzfestival.org.

The festival kicks off with a local jazz performer and his band of piano, drums and bassist - The Paul Giordimaina Trio. The trio will be also occasionally accompanied by the celebrated Italian saxophone player, Rino Cirinnà. Also on Thursday, visitors will be treated to music from the Jeremy Pelt Quintet, a band which has been highly touted by the Downbeat Magazine. The first evening will also include the performance of the Al di Meola World Sinfonia with the participation of the Grammy-nominated Gonzalo Rubalcaba. On Friday, be prepared to jazz away to the music of the Tigran Hamasyan Trio whose dynamic jazz pianist won The lonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in 2006. The evening will
