“The land of sun and sea”… That’s how Malta was known for amongst tourists in the past and probably is still known to this very day, however the statement should probably be “the land of sun, sea, history and culture.” During your stay on the island this summer, whilst enjoying the beaches you might want to dip into the rich history of Malta.

CM

Heritage Malta, has a number of sites and museums which are right on the way to some of the most popular beaches.

For instance, on the way to Pretty Bay in BirΩebbu©a, an ideal stop would be the cave known as G˙ar Dalam. Discovered in the latter half of the 19th Century, with a series of excavations unearthing animal bones as well as human remains and artifacts dating back up to more than 500,000 years.

A very popular place to visit in summer is the Blue Grotto in Wied iΩ-Ûurrieq, but what about stopping on the way to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Óa©ar Qim and Mnajdra temples? The temples of Óa©ar Qim, stands on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla, not more than 2km south-west of the village of Qrendi. At the bottom of the hill, only 500m away, lies another remarkable temple site, Mnajdra found above the Southern cliffs. The surrounding landscape is typical Mediterranean garigue and spectacular in its starkness and isolation. Image: Óa©ar Qim Temples © Heritage Malta

The long list of sites would not be complete if one does not mention Óa©rat and Skorba Temples on the way to one of the most popular beaches on the island, Golden Bay. Skorba lies in the hamlet of Ûebbieg˙, on the outskirts of M©arr, overlooking the nearby valley and providing a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. Visiting the Maltese islands is far more then simply the fine weather and beaches and these are but a few of the numerous sites Heritage Malta has to offer. After a long day splashing around in the water or touring about, enjoy dining under the stars in the warm summer breeze, tasting Maltese and Mediterranean culinary delights. Whatever your choice, there are several restaurants both indoor and outdoor to choose from. Valletta is particularly attractive because there you can walk through the streets and discover quite a number of quaint little restaurants and bars, some of which having live bands. Summer nights in Malta and Gozo are filled with colour and joyful atmosphere with village festas in various towns and villages every week. Brass band parades, processions carrying life-sized statues of the village patron saint and decorated churches and streets all lit up for the occasion. All this added to the ringing of church bells and fireworks which set the Maltese nights alight.

PURCHASE OF PROPERTY BY NON-MALTESE BUYERS

Running from 14 July to 2 August, artists from Croatia, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, South Africa and Russia will join some of the best Maltese artists in a festival with 18 performances and a separate programme of workshops and master classes. Most of these events will be held in some of the island’s most prestigious historical venues, such as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Pjazza Teatru Rjal and the newly-restored Fort St Elmo, bringing a layer of history to the festival’s already rich narrative. The festival will open on a high note with 2Cellos, where two young Croatian cellists take cello playing to a new level in a breathtaking live performance. Fort St Elmo will set the scene for Hide and Seek, the new dance production by Ivan Perez which will take audiences into an atmospheric trip where desires, frustrations, madness and tenderness are slowly revealed. Music-lovers will enjoy Ruben Zahra & Windstreken Ensemble, a concert which portrays a unique folk-fusion profile, as well as Upclose, an innovative work by Dutch composer Michel van der Aa where film and live performance reflect one another.

It is quite easy for a non-Maltese to purchase property in Malta and Gozo. Naturally, some conditions apply including certain restrictions regarding the minimum value of property that can be purchased and the use that the buyer will make of the property. Some buyers may also require a special permit.

IL-FESTA is an innovative event added to the vast calendar of events which the Office of the President of Malta organises in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund. This event will take place on the 11th and 12th July 2014 at San Anton Palace. Imagine being taken back to the 17th century when Grandmaster Antoine de Paule used to reside at San Anton Palace. Imagine traditional Maltese food, traditional Maltese games, traditional Maltese music, live painting, entertainment, exhibitions and much more under one roof – San Anton Palace. The Office of the President thought of organising this feast in order to celebrate what makes us Maltese. This ‘feast’ is a tribute to the Maltese identity which we owe to our ancestors and which we need to pass on to the future generations. C

M

This event will occupy the entire area of the Palace, from the state rooms to be enhanced by re-enactments showcasing the rule under the Order of St John, to the President’s Kitchen Garden, and the public and private gardens of San Anton Palace.

Maltese Honey

C

M

Y

Honey is nature’s gold and the Maltese islands were always blessed with this special healthy-giving gold. In reality the name of Malta derives from the Greek term for honey or land of honey - melitos - and Malta was, in fact, originally known as Melita. The Roman name for honey was quite similar - melitai.

K

Honey making bees are breeded in diverse locations on the islands with hives being located in idyllic sites that provide plenty of sweet-smelling fodder for these tiny creatures. Some of the most renown sites are Mellie˙a, Fawwara beneath the cliffs of Dingli, on Gozo and on Comino. Unfortunately there are not many beekeepers today, but the ones which remain, are dedicated and passionate about their work and produce honey which keep the industry of Maltese honey making on the international map. There are varied types of honey produced in Malta, all deriving from different plants and trees. Some of the more significant are those made from clover, eucalyptus, orange blossom, carob trees and wild thyme. Each season has its own and Spring time will allow the bees to produce clover honey, early summer will produce thyme honey, early autumn will produce carob honey. Each variety is distinctly different from the other, recognisable from the honey’s fragrance and colour. It is interesting to purchase honey straight from the beekeeper who will explain from which plant each honey variety is produced and more importantly, what are its individual and unique health benefits. Beekeepers have recommendations for each of their products, from the ideal soothing honey against coughs, to honey that will relieve nasal congestion. Ask for propolis which is the best natural product to protect young and old from nasty colds and flu symptoms.

Now in its 24th edition, the Malta Jazz Festival has helped raise the profile of jazz locally from a fringe festival to one of the most-awaited musical events in Malta’s artistic and cultural calendar. Running from the 17th to the 19th July in the open-air setting of Ta’ Liesse - where the Grand Harbour bastions meet the sea - contemporary music comes together with a sense of history, setting the backdrop for high-calibre performances which delight jazz aficionados and lay persons alike. This, however, is only one of the many intersections running through this year’s festival. Another is that created by the musicians themselves as they cross jazz with other types of music. Mehliana (featuring Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana), for instance – which is set to be one of the festival’s hottest tickets - mix jazz with electronica to create a trance-laden music while the French-born musician Laurent Coq combines Caribbean/Creole influences with modern jazz piano in his Laurent Coq Dialogue Trio. Other rising stars include vibraphonist Warren Wolf and Kneebody, a band which crosses genres with ease. Local talent will be represented by Paul Abela Quintet featuring Gabriele Comeglio on Thursday 17th, Joseph Camilleri Trio and Dominic Galea Trio on Friday 18th and Francesca Galea, the winner of last year’s Jazz Contest, on Saturday 19th.
