MALTESE SUMMER WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT SPENDING SUMMER IN MALTA? FOR ONE THING, THERE ARE THE COLOURS – THE SUN BRINGS OUT BRIGHT TYPICALLY MEDITERRANEAN COLOURS THAT MAKE YOU SEE COLOUR AS NEVER BEFORE. THEN THERE IS THE SEA WITH ITS MANY MOODS BUT MOSTLY ONES WHICH INVITE YOU TO DIP IN AND IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE EXPERIENCE OF SWIMMING IN THE MED. CHOOSE A ROCKY BEACH FOR SECLUSION AND THE POSSIBILITY OF SOME EXCEPTIONAL DIVING. CHOOSE A SANDY BEACH FOR THE CHANCE OF DOZING AWAY ON A BED OF WARM SAND TO THE SOUND OF CHILDREN PLAYING.

Malta is particularly proud of its seaside, especially since it has just been awarded The Blue Flag Award by the International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The FEE gave the islands nine quality flags for efforts made towards sustainable management of their beaches and for having the second best swimming water quality in Europe. Six bays in Malta and Gozo received the Blue Flag Award, namely Mellie˙a Bay, G˙ajn Tuffie˙a, Ramla l-Óamra in Gozo, Qawra Point, St Grorge’s Bay and Bu©ibba Perched Beach. The Beach of Quality Award went to Fond G˙adir, Paradise Hotel private beach and Golden Bay.

Late at night, after the siesta, it is time to prepare for….. the festa. Maltese summers are all about festivities in each and every town and village – there are the brass bands, the street decorations, the petards, the processions, with the statues….. Each locality will put on the fairy lights on rooftops, on church fronts and all the facades of the most important edifices in town. Houses are spring-cleaned, dinners planned, new clothes purchased. Religious celebrations are held within the church and outside on the roads The festa atmosphere combines with holiday-time so that everybody can enjoy local colour, traditions and age-old customs which are linked to these annual event. The general interest in the local pageants and pious ceremonies in honour of the celebrated divinity is only beaten by the highlight of each festa night - the fireworks. Enjoying spectacular colours sparking against the dark summer sky is perhaps the best way to cap a perfect balmy summer evening.... the Maltese way.

ASK ANY SELF-RESPECTING MALTESE FOR A TRADITIONAL MALTESE DISH, AND SIMILAR TO THE FRENCH 'LAPIN' THE ANSWER WOULD BE MALTESE 'FENEK'. THE FENKATA ALIAS STEWED RABBIT, IS QUITE LITERALLY A NATIONAL DISH. IT IS THE EXCUSE FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS TO COME TOGETHER AND DINE AWAY.

Wild rabbits were once bountiful on the islands, one of the reasons why hunting became so popular. However the tradition to hunt rabbit apparently became so widely rampant that the Knights of St John issued an order that outlawed rabbit hunting so that the indigenous species would not be killed off. By the time restrictions were lifted in the late 18th century, the Maltese had become experts at breeding rabbits domestically and today the skill is still highly valued. Eating rabbit the Maltese way is a unique experience. Marinated rabbit is stewed or fried, and served with gravy and fresh crunchy Maltese bread, but not before a first dish of spaghetti with 'fenek' sauce tossed down with homemade wine. It is all best experienced at the multiple award winning Ta' Marija Restaurant, in Mosta. Every Wednesday and Friday night be part of a Maltese Extravaganza Night - be lulled with strumming mandolins and guitars, traditional and popular song, folk dancing and the legendary charm of the hostess Maria Muscat. Share in the fun and bonhomie; share the good food; be part of something so traditional that you couldn't experience Maltese rabbit any other way.

L-IMNARJA ONE OF THE OLDEST TRADITIONAL FESTIVITIES IN MALTA IS LINKED TO THE FEAST OF ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL, COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS L-IMNARJA CELEBRATED ON JUNE 29. A NATIONAL AND PUBLIC HOLIDAY, THE FEAST HAS BEEN CELEBRATED IN THE OLD CITY OF MDINA IN MALTA, SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL, AND IN NADUR IN GOZO.

Image © IMPACT PR

Its origins go back to the days of knights in shining armour, when the Knights of St John were present on Malta during the 16th Century. The popular festival which was characterised by numerous illuminations and bonfires around the old city and its suburb Rabat, was proclaimed a public holiday and remained thus ever since. Originally the focus of the festivities was St.Paul's grotto in Rabat, but during the 17th Century the focus shifted to the Cathedral of Mdina. Both St Peter and St Paul enjoyed great devotion amongst the predominantly Christian congregation of the islands. Eventually the festa turned to a national 'family' festival during which families typically congregate out of doors in the Buskett Gardens, a very old tree grove just a short distance from Rabat. To add to the enjoyment of families who meet out in the open to share hearty picnics, are traditional donkey races with the winner being decorated with the Palju - a trophy in the form of a banner. Long gone are the days when the Grandmaster of the Order himself presented the grand prize but the races remain a staple event on June 29, each and every year. These festivities also include traditional 'g˙ana' singing as well as the blessing of animals and agricultural produce.
