Thursday 7 Sette Giugno. Malta commemorates the tragic events of 7th June 1919 known as the 'Sette Giugno'.This is in remembrance of the riots of 1919 when the Maltese people revolted against the British administration and demanded some form of representative government for the island. Four people died on that fateful day. A commemorative ceremony will be held at St. George's Square Valletta, organised by the National Festivities Committee. A similar commemoration will take place in Xagħra, Gozo. Friday 29 St Peter and St Paul. Known by the locals as L-Imnarja. Special activities such as the country-folk music known as l-Għana are held in Buskett Gardens, limits of Rabat. Friday 1 – Saturday 30 Beer & Chocolate Pairing. Malta chocolate factory, Buġibba. During this one hour session, the Malta Chocolate Factory will pair a tasting selection of Maltese craft beers with six of their premium handmade chocolates. They will discuss how beer is made, the flavour notes, and compare and contrast them with each other. With each of the beers , they will pair one or two chocolate truffles or pralines to show you how chocolates and beer together can enhance each of the other flavours. They will also talk about how the chocolates are made and the individual flavour notes of each of the chocolates. www.mcf.com.mt Thursday 14 DFASinMalta’s last lecture of the season will cover Maltese art in public collections in the UK. In dieser Session von einer Stunde vereint die Malta Chocolate Factory maltesische Biere vom Fass mit sechs ihrer erstklassigen Schokoladen. Sie erklären die Herstellung von Bier, die Geschmacksrichtungen und vergleichen diese miteinander. Mit jedem der Biere servieren sie ein oder zwei Schokoladentrüffel oder Pralinen, um zu zeigen, wie gut sich Bier und Schokolade ergänzen. Gozo is a destination for all seasons and summer is no exception. It is the season when local festas are in full bloom as fireworks, band marches, beautifully decorated village churches and patron saints take centre stage in each village and town on the island. Taking a boat ride around Gozo’s coastline can provide another alternative to simply staying on the beach, and enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. Diving is a mainstay during this period and many choose to enjoy the internationally renowned dive sites and scuttled wrecks along Gozo’s coast line. The various diving schools in Gozo provide expert and safe guidance for the enjoyment of the unique, underwater environment. For culture vultures, Gozo has got plenty of events lined up this summer. The Victoria International Arts Festival is a feast for the senses. For five weeks in June and July, Victoria joins the festival cities of the world with an international composition of artistes and ensembles who leave a lasting imprint on the cultural soul of the island. The varied programme of cultural events includes a jazz festival at Mgarr Harbour, a Brass Festival, the Qala International Folk Festival, musical events in Xlendi, Mgarr, and Marsalforn and a film festival at the Gozo Citadel.

Joseph Calleja’s Artistic Journey Through His Works The 26th edition of the BOV Retrospective Art Exhibition will be featuring over 70 pieces of the modern contemporary artist Joseph Calleja. Calleja has lived most of his artistic life in Toronto Cananda but has returned to Malta, at the venerable age of 94, for this retrospective exhibition, after an absence of two decades. This exhibition is being curated by Dr Theresa Vella. Joseph Calleja is a renowned artist, who has made a name for himself, not only in Malta, but also overseas. Born in Xewkija, Gozo to a family of stone-masons in 1924, Calleja decided to pursue art from an early age. Calleja is a firm believer that ‘an artist always mirrors his own time’ and as he himself claims, his involvement with kinetics and sacrifice reflect the 20th century technological innovations and global social upheavels.

In the late 1960s, Calleja earned his place on the international art scene with murals in light, by means of his own experimental blend of pictorial imagination through the medium of technology. In 1972, Calleja returned with a series of kinetic sculptures in polished chromed steel, moved by hidden motors and augmented by mirrors to create undulating shapes together with reflected bursts of light. Some years after retiring in 1984, Calleja returned to the art of his youth – ‘his first love’ - stone carving, creating elemental forms which are drawn out of his memory of prehistoric sculptures. Calleja’s works feature at the Museum of Fine Arts in Malta as well as the National Gallery of Canada and Hamilton Art Gallery. This year, the 26th BOV Retrospective Art Exhibition is being hosted at the Gran Salon at the Auberge de Provence in Triq ir-Repubblika, Valletta. This magnificent baroque hall, which is currently undergoing much-needed conservation with the support of the Bank, provides the perfect backdrop for the pieces of Joseph Calleja, many of which have been loaned from the artist’s personal collection in Toronto.

Inaugurated by H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, the exhibition remains open to the general public until the 15th July 2018. Calleja is the latest in the series of modern contemporary artists whose contribution to the Maltese artistic scene are honoured in Bank of Valletta’s Retrospective Art Exhibitions, which are organised every year. Over the years, BOV paid tribute to some of the most famous artists of our islands like Antoine Camilleri and Frank Portelli, fellow artists of Joseph Calleja and members of the Modern Art Circle of the 1950s. The St Petersburg Capella Symphony Orchestra At The Mediterranean Conference Centre

On the 17th June at 19:00 hours the Mediterranean Conference Centre shall be hosting one of the finest orchestras in the world, the St Petersburg Capella Symphony Orchestra in an ambitious programme of music by three great Late Romantic and early 20th century composers Nielsen, Rachmaninov and Bruckner. The concert shall be held in collaboration with the European foundation for the support of culture. The Capella Symphony orchestra in St Petersburg is one of the icons of Russian and European culture. It has achieved wide acclaim under the leadership of Alexander Chernushenko its artistic director and principal conductor. The Academic Capella also boasts one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest choirs which enables it to perform large scale choral and orchestral works. It is an interesting fact that the origins of the capella date back to the fifteenth century. Conductor Alexei Galea Cavallazzi

The concert shall feature acclaimed pianist Arkadi Zenziper and one of Malta's finest conductors, Alexei Galea Cavallazzi. The concert shall open with the Carl Nielsen Helios overture, a symphonic poem based on the sun's journey from morning to evening. This shall be followed by the Rachmaninov second piano concerto. The second half shall feature Bruckner's first symphony. The Mediterranean conference Centre has been very active in promoting high caliber cultural events with foreign orchestras and has been at the forefront of raising standards of orchestral music in Malta. Fort St. Angelo

Fort St Angeloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intrinsic value for the Maltese islands and their people knows no comparison. It may not be the oldest, grandest or finest stronghold, but it surely is the boldest memorial of the strategic importance of these tiny islands and of the innumerable lives sacrificed for their dominion since time immemorial. Its control meant effective rule of the Maltese islands during at least the past thousand years. Indeed, no other fortress has been engaged with the same intensity in the shaping of Maltaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s destiny. Fashioned around a strategically located and conveniently sized hillock at the tip of the Birgu peninsula, the stronghold dominates the Grand Harbour. The present fabric is the net sum of countless modifications and additions over several centuries, if not millennia. The site attracted attention since antiquity, in particular following the islandsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; colonization and insertion in the then prevailing trading routes by the Phoenicians during the first half millennium before Christ. A robust stronghold must have been planted

firmly on its perched crest by late antiquity. But it was the thirteenth century that provided the earliest known documentary references and description of the then medieval castle. By 1274, Fort St Angelo or the Castrum Maris (castle by the sea) as known at the time, consisted of two enclosures each demarcated by an enceinte with round towers at regular intervals. It came to be viewed by the Sicilian overlords as a guarantee of their interests in the Maltese islands, and was administered by loyal subjects under the title of Castellan. It instilled a sense of security in the islanders and sustained the flourishing of adjoining Birgu, the only coastal settlement in Malta and Gozo that survived the perennial threat posed by corsairing. Significantly, the Castrum Maris succeeded to suppress the earliest known Ottoman assault on Malta in 1488. After 1530 the new tenants of the Maltese islands, the Order of St John, turned the Castrum Maris,

christened Fort St Angelo, into their headquarters. Indeed, the Fort formed an intrinsic part of the Order’s Convent and even housed the Grand Master’s residence between 1530 and 1558. The Knights extensively remodelled the then obsolete medieval castle with the construction of a series of artillery platforms, which marked the introduction of the bastioned system of defence into the Maltese islands. The rejuvenated sentinel of the Grand Harbour played a determining role during the Great Siege of 1565. It coordinated the day to day defensive and offensive strategies, housed the main provisions’ depot, inflicted havoc on the Ottomans’ makeshift batteries on Mount Sciberras and San Salvatore Hill, and spoiled the besiegers’ plan to attack Senglea by surprise on 15 July.

It includes an interpretation centre presenting information about the fort and its history through three complementing immersive experiences and accompanying displays, namely the Centre of the Mediterranean (overview of the use of the Maltese islands by foreign powers), Key to Malta (a highlight of the advantage offered by the site of the fort for the control of the Grand Harbour) and National Icon (a tribute to the leading act played by the fort for centuries on end).

In 1689 the military engineer Carlos Grunenbergh realized that the then derelict fortress was nonetheless the best option to safeguard the Grand Harbour and subsequently spearheaded its transformation into a forceful work, including four intimidating gun platforms with a capacity of some 50 artillery pieces aimed at the entrance of the harbour. The Fort’s vocation stood unchallenged with the settling in of the British colonisers at the turn of the nineteenth century. A major upgrade in 1872 sought the introduction of three 9-inch rifled-muzzle-loading guns. In 1906 the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet relocated its command hub inside the Fort which was enlisted as shore base, first renamed HMS Egmont in 1912 and HMS St Angelo in 1933. Fort St. Angelo was called into action during World War II to offer protection against the Axis air raids. It still suffered the brunt of enemy strikes and was directly hit with 69 bombs. Following the war, the Fort continued to serve as the headquarters of the Royal Navy in Malta until the last detachment of foreign forces marched out of its walls in March 1979. Fort St Angelo was recently restored and the €14.5 million restoration project was inaugurated in 2015. Dominating the tip of Vittoriosa, this Fort has always been of great importance because of its strategic position. Fort St Angelo promises a genuinely enticing and memorable experience. The fort comprises d’Homedes Bastion, the Egmont Hall, Ferramolino’s Cavalier, the Officers’ Lounge and terraces, Grunenbergh’s Bastion, the Admiral’s Hall

Valletta 2018: June Highlights

Everyone is invited to explore the sights, sounds, tastes, and celebrations unfolding all over the Maltese Islands during Valletta 2018, the European Capital of Culture. Up until 1st July, art lovers and curious visitors will want to snap up the last chance to experience The Island is What the Sea Surrounds (Dal-Baħar Madwarha), Valletta 2018’s major contemporary art exhibition. The exhibition, wherein 22 renowned and emerging artists explore the identity of islanders and the Mediterranean Sea, is operating in two main venues in Valletta: the Underground Cisterns in front of the Law Courts and ‘il-Pixkerija’ (Valletta’s old fish market). On the 7th of June, everyone is also invited to enjoy Valletta Pageant of the Seas 2018, a spectacular public event set against Valletta’s iconic Grand Harbour. It’s a vibrant spectacle, with competitive water races and acts by day and a colourful firework display that lights up the night sky.

At the Manoel Theatre, Mozart at Midnight (16 June) focuses on his final years, with the “The Magic Flute” and his “Jupiter” symphony, while at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Berlioz Le Fantastique (22 June) celebrates the innovative work of French composer Hector Berlioz with the “Les Nuits d’Été” song cycle and “Symphonie Fantastique”. MPO is also joining the Malta Youth Orchestra in concert for Mediterranean Soul (30 June) at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, to explore the musical heritage of the diverse cultures sharing

The Modern Music Days programme calls visitors to celebrate the summer solstice at Malta’s famous Mnajdra Temples during Ritual, a concert by Scottish concert musician John Kenny. This event will be held twice; once at sunset on the 23rd and once at sunrise on the 24th of June. Meanwhile, Għanafest (22 – 23 June) sets up stage at the beautiful Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana, to fill the air with ‘għana’, or local folk song. And Map of the Mediterranean (20 – 22 June) brings evenings of solidarity to Maori, Valletta, where Maltese poet Antoine Cassar recites poetry while composer Luc Houtkamp and his POW Ensemble perform newly composed songs about migration, the Mediterranean Sea and the current refugee crises. The main exhibition dedicated to Latitude 36 at Blitz Art Gallery in Valletta brings together the work of invited artists who are examining past and present migration stories through audio-visual works, installations and live performance. Għanafest celebrates the diversity of Mediterranean and world music, bringing together a rich programme of għana (Maltese folk music), Maltese bands and international world music acts. Għanafest is a multinational get-together, an event that celebrates multi-ethnicity and cross-border collaborations. THREE STYLES OF MALTESE SONG Għana, (pron. aa-na) is the generic term for Maltese folk song. Historically, several styles of għana flourished but today there are three main categories: SPIRTU PRONT (quick wit, literally ‘ready spirit’) Spirtu Pront is essentially an improvised song duels between two għannejja, each trying to outsmart the other in argument. Generally, two song duels are held simultaneously: the first singer matched against the third, the second against the fourth. Such an arrangement gives each singer more time to compose a response. Usually, the subject of the duel emerges early in the encounter itself, with the singers provoking their adversary. TAL-FATT (FACTUAL) Għana tal-Fatt usually only involves one għannej. Nowadays, the singer is often the composer of the lyrics; whereas in earlier times, certainly in the first half of the twentieth century, it was common for għannejja to sing texts composed by others and published in għana booklets. The subject of fattijiet may be tragic or comic and may be based on actual events or fiction. FIL-GĦOLI (HIGH-PITCHED) While the other two styles (Spirtu Pront and Fatt) are

driven by verbal play and narrative, għana fil-għolifavours the musical qualities of the voice as the song develops in melodic contours over the regular pulse of the guitar. The prolonged melisma of the words draws the listener along with them, inviting him to stay with the sense and colour of the sound, rather than attempt to follow the meaning of the words. This year’s festival will be held on 22 and 23 June from 7pm at Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana and will include a varied programme of għana and Maltese folk music on both nights. It will also include vocalist Cheryl Balzan together with guitarist and songwriter Christian Tanti who will sing songs from their upcoming album on the first night. They will be followed by Kellys Heroes, a Nottingham-based band, whose repertoire encompasses fast and furious Celtic tunes and songs, gentle ballads, contemporary numbers as well as some original material which they play on the accordion, rhythm guitar, and bodhran (an Irish frame drum). The second night will feature SKALD, a quintet formed recently to breathe life into Maltese literature and culture with its own blend of original music. They will be followed by Seiva, a Portuguese folk trio who play rural music with an urban twist on Portuguese bagpipes and adufe (square drum), percussions, Braguesa, Cavaquinho, and tambourine. Just as last year, Għanafest is extending its activities to three different localities: Qrendi, Buskett, and Birżebbuġa.
