March Feasts

Statues carried during Good Friday processions © MTA

Festa Celebration: A typical Maltese ‘festa’ with band marches, fireworks displays and religious processions. Sunday 11 St. Gregory The Great, Ta’ Kerċem, Gozo Monday 19 St. Joseph, Rabat (Public Holiday) Friday 30 Good Friday (Public Holiday). Good Friday and Easter are celebrated in Malta in a liturgical and ceremonially prominent manner. On Palm Sunday, one week before Easter, one may assist to the liturgical rites that usher in Holy Week. On Thursday evening and Friday morning, churches have their paintings draped over in purple or black velvet. Most Maltese turn out in their thousands to visit and pray in seven different churches as traditionally observed. On Good Friday, late afternoon, some 17 different towns and villages commemorate the Passion of the Christ by an organised and very solemn procession of statues. Each of these statues represents a particular episode in the Passion of the Christ and is carried by pallbearers. Between one statue and another (some ten in all) participants are dressed as biblical characters who take part in the procession in a dignified manner. Many processions include men in penitence bearing a cross and sometimes dragging chains as well tied to their bare feet as penitence.

März Feste

Festa Celebration: Eine typisch maltesische "Festa" mit Bandmärschen, Feuerwerk und religiösen Prozessionen. Sonntag, 11. St. Gregory The Great, Ta’ Kerċem, Gozo Montag, 19. St. Joseph, Rabat (Gesetzlicher Feiertag) Freitag, 30. Karfreitag, (Gesetzlicher Feiertag).

Enjoy Dwejra’s Natural Beauty

Paddleboarding at Dwejra Bay during Sunset hours. Photo © Ministry For Gozo

This time last year, Dwejra Bay lost an iconic landmark that made Gozo world famous. The Azure Window represented Gozo and the island’s enduring and raw beauty for many, many years until it was swept away by gale force winds and high waves. However, Dwejra has many more features to offer that were, perhaps, overlooked when the Azure Window was still around. It is no coincidence that this location has been a favourite backdrop for filmmakers, as nature and geography seem to have schemed to create a place like no other. Dwejra Tower and Fungus Rock © Terry Camilleri

Here are three natural spots which you should not miss on your next visit to Dwejra: The Inland Sea This area has been formed by a circular depression in the land, which created a unique lagoon. The Inland Sea is connected to the main sea via a 100-metre tunnel that can be used by small boats. Traditionally, the Inland Sea at Dwejra was a fishermen’s cove and the small fishermen’s huts are still standing, but today fishermen gladly take out tourists for boat trips. The Fungus Rock This islet has its own interesting story about a precious medicinal plant growing here and because of which, it was heavily guarded. The Knights of St. John even levelled out its sides to ensure that climbing the rock was virtually an impossible task. Great punishment awaited those who were caught scaling the rock. Back in time, a kind of primitive cable-car enabled access to the rock. The Blue Hole The Blue Hole is an internationally acclaimed diving spot. This vertical chimney, which Jacques Cousteau himself once earmarked as one of his top 10 diving spots in the world is a must for every serious diver. While diving here, you might want to take a peek at the submerged Azure Window, which has now become an awesome diving spot.

While you’re at Dwejra…. Also check out the Dwejra Tower. Built in 1652, this tower acted as a sentinel against the pirates and marauders, and guarded the Fungus Rock. The Tower also played a part in WWII when it acted as a guard for the western side of Gozo. If the flag is flying on top of the tower, it means that it is open to the public. We suggest a visit to Dwejra during sunset hours. Sunsets at Dwejra are experienced everyday by visitors who stand in awe of a natural ritual, of unparalleled beauty.

Highlights This March

The month of March brings a treasure-trove of events and activities that friends, family and curious visitors can enjoy in Valletta, Malta’s famous Baroque capital, and diverse localities all over the Islands. Għajnsielem in Gozo will be hosting “Años Luz”, a delightful performance offering audiences a unique experience in contemporary shadow theatre, accompanied by live music on the 3rd and 4th of March. In “Ida Kelarova’s Jazz Famelija” on the 10th of March at the Don Bosco Oratory Theatre in Victoria Gozo, music lovers can enjoy the best of Czech and Slovak musicians collaborating on a music formation that links Romani harmonies and Latin-American rhythms to jazz. “Hush”, an original musical taking place between the 17th and 19th March, deals with the themes of loss, fear and lost confidence in a magical world where a bitter heart can steal music and sound away, leaving the world in silence. The young and the young at heart can witness a curiosities fair full of fun, interactive mechanical installations designed by Tombs Creatius in “The Strange Travels of Señor Tonet”, a two week festival starting on the 28th March at Esplora, Kalkara.

On the 10th of March Valletta 2018’s major multi-site exhibition, “Dal-Baħar Madwarha” opens its doors to curious visitors. Curated by Maren Richter, the exhibition hosts large installations, performances and public interventions taking place in both traditional and unexpected locations across Malta, to explore the idea of “islandness” in playful and critical ways. The last day of the month will see the opening of “European Eyes on Japan”, a visual arts project led by artistic director Mikiko Kikuta, which has toured over 30 European Capitals of Culture since 1999. Local Councils Events

[FEATURES]

Celebrating Tradition, Folklore and Culture

March Thursday 29th (Maundy Thursday) 20:00hrs onwards. In keeping with what has now become a yearly tradition, the Siġġiewi Local Council will illuminate the way to the Laferla Cross and the Annunciation Chapel with Maltese traditional torches (fjakkoli) on Maundy Thursday (29 March 2018). The Laferla Cross and the Annunciation Chapel will also be lit using artificial lights from Wednesday 28 March 2018 up to Saturday 31 March 2018. Traditional Maltese torches will be used to illuminate the path starting at the Statue of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and leading to the hill of the Cross, transforming the surroundings into a Via Crucis. The steep track leading to the hill will also be floodlit and thus the hillside will be transformed into an appropriate Way of the Cross. The Laferla cross was erected by Dun Pawl Laferla from Siġġiewi in 1903 to commemorate the beginning of the 20th century. A set of stone statues representing the Passion of our Lord were also installed along the steep track. The Siġġiewi Local Council started floodlighting the Cross on Maundy Thursday night in 1994.The Laferla Cross Alight has since then been very popular amongst us Maltese and tourists alike. Every year thousands of people visit the permanent Good Friday statues situated along the way to the Hill where the Laferla Cross stands making it a unique Maltese landmark.

Throughout the years, the event gained national significance and thousands of people visit each year Ta’ l-Għolja to pray the Way of the Cross and also to enjoy the spectacular vista from one of the highest points on the islands. This event has gained also international prominence and was from time to time given coverage on several international newspapers such as the Sunday Times of London and other news networks such as Reuters and BBC. The Fjakkolata in the last years has spread beyond the Way of the Hill and now also includes Siġġiewi Parish Church parvis and Saint Nicholas Square where thousands of traditional Maltese torches and candles are lit up. The two main partners of the event are the St Nicholas Band Club and the Grupp tal-Armar Sitta ta’ Diċembru. They participate by organising a pageant on the hill, a musical band programme, the production and installation of traditional torches to be used in the event and the provision of back-up personnel. This event is being held thanks to the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Councils and Communities and The Malta Tourism Authority. For more information one may wish to contact the Siggiewi Local Council on 21466000 or by email on siggiewi.lc@gov.mt

Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Manoel

Image: Manoel Theatre © Paul Camilleri

Bank of Valletta’s collaboration with Teatru Manoel goes back over a decade, years in which the Bank gave its financial support to enable the staging of important productions, while opening the world of performing arts to a wider cross-section of the population. The countdown has started for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Don Giovanni to come to life at the Teatru Manoel. This opera, which was only recently listed as the 9th most performed opera worldwide, is the second in the trilogy of operas that the Mozart wrote to the libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, in what was to become one of the most famous collaborations in the

history of opera. Teatru Manoel has chosen to feature them consecutively, over three years. Last year we had Le Nozze di Figaro whilst we await the masterpiece Cosi Fan Tutte as the highlight of next year’s programme. The cast of Don Giovanni brings to the Manoel an interesting blend of internationally renowned names as well as Maltese artists who are already making a name for themselves around the world. Christian Bowers will take the spoils of Don Giovanni with Leparello being played by Pauls Putnins. London-based tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens will be Don Ottavio, while Donna Elvira and Zerlina will be

played by Claire Debono and Nicola Said respectively. Don Giovanni had premiered in Prague on the 29th October 1787. Mozart himself called this work ‘dramma giocosa’. In reality, this work of art blends dramatic scenes with lighter moments. In fact, the curtain opens on a murder scene, working its way to the final debâcle and moralising ensemble. To some extent, Mozart must have been familiar with the exploits of the 18th century greatest playboy, the Italian Gaicomo Casanova. The human dimension and touch of the supernatural in this opera transcended the test of time and won it a special place in the public’s heart. At times Don Giovanni’s outrageous cheekiness could almost be admired as is his nerve when he is facing the day of reckoning, but of course, he had to be punished for all the harm he caused. For the debut of Don Giovanni at the Manoel, Jack Furness has created a1950s/film noir/Gotham City context that fits the operatic mood like a glove. This new production will be set in the 1950s and promises to be both moving and visually striking. This year, opera lovers do not have Don Giovanni only to look forward to but also the Teatru Manoel BOV Opera Week that will run between the 5th and 11th March 2018. Zeppoli (sfineġ ta’ San Ġużepp)

Malta’s cuisine is undoubtedly exquisite, yet it is not as unique as one might think. Because of its location, Malta has enjoyed a lot of cultural influences from diverse countries around the Mediterranean basin, especially from Italy and Sicily, the latter being an island with which Malta has a very strong link. Cultural influences include cuisine, and alongside a diet of pasta which the Maltese love so much, sweets are the predominant Italian influence on Maltese cuisine. A perfect example of this influence has to be the Zeppole which are extremely popular sweets made throughout Italy. Also known in Malta as Zeppoli (the Maltese language version of the word) or the St. Joseph Day Cake, this is a sweet pastry, a cross between a doughnut and choux pastry. The light, deep-fried ball of dough is often filled with a sweet, creamy and rich ricotta cheese filling. The final result is topped with powdered sugar or alternatively nuts. The Zeppoli are quite popular in Malta, especially since they are closely linked with St. Joseph’s Day, so mvuch so that they are called after the saint. Their namesake is mostly due to the Zeppoli being made during March, the month when the feast of St. Joseph occurs. Other names for Zeppoli are ‘sfineġ’ and ‘bigne di S. Giuseppe’, the latter a name particular to Rome. It is customary for Maltese to associate any occasion with food, like the Easter Figolli or the Carnival Prinjolata. To each his own, after all.

A Unique Numismatic Display At The National Museum Of Archaeology The national numismatic collection, consisting of more than 16,000 coins and medals, is the largest and most diverse found on the island. Heritage Malta’s visitors are able to view a vast selection of these coins at the National Numismatic Exhibition housed at the National Museum of Archaeology. Coins started being struck around 650 BC. They provide physical evidence not only of monetary values but also other information such as the political importance of different periods. Their iconography is a source of information on gods, emperors, and other characters or symbols important for those who commissioned them. The earliest coin in the national collection dates back to the Punic period (fifth century BC). The collection is extremely important, especially the part concerning the Order of the Knights of St John, which includes a number of rare specimens and is regarded as the most comprehensive collection of its kind. This collection grew throughout the years mostly following donations such as that by Professor Salvatore Luigi Pisani in 1899. It is continuously being increased with acquisitions and other donations. The exhibition is divided periodically, including Carthaginians and Romans, the Medieval Millennium, the Order of St John, and the French and the British. The first known coins to be used in Malta were introduced in the late 5th century BC by the Carthaginians and even though they were in constant war with many of the Greek city states, Greek coins were also used in Malta. When in 218BC Malta passed under Roman rule, both Carthaginian and Roman coins were used. The first Roman coins actually minted in Malta were struck around 212 BC. Minting of coins in all Roman provinces, including Malta, stopped at the end of the 1st century BC since civil wars between Roman generals and senators led to the establishment of the Roman Empire by the first Emperor Augustus in 27 BC. During this troublesome period, all leaders minted their own coinage.

The next section showcases the Medieval Millennium following the fall of the Western Roman Empire and this period includes coins of the Vandals and Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, the Muslims, the Normans, the Hohenstaufens, the Angevins, and the Aragonese. The part concerning the Order of the Knights of St John includes a number of rare specimens and is regarded as the most comprehensive collection of its kind. Around half out of the 1926 coins of the Order of St John currently in the national collection formed part of Pisani’s collection. During the Order’s initial years Sicilian coins continued to be used freely until they were phased out. During the Order’s rule a number of denominations were struck; in gold, silver and copper. The last showcase in the exhibition shows coins from the French and the British period. During the French period, especially when the Maltese blockaded the French in Valletta and gold and silver objects were melted, small rectangular ingots were casted. The front of both the gold and silver ingots bore the arms of Valletta, the lion in an oval frame. The British period covers from 1800 until 1972 when in that year Malta issued its own currency for the first time. Another interesting section includes medals, dies, proofs and accessories while the minting process is also explained by an audiovisual. Admission to the National Numismatic Exhibition at the National Museum of Archaeology is included in the museum’s regular ticket price. The National Museum of Archaeology opens every day between 9.00hrs and 18.00hrs, last admission at 17.30hrs. For more information visit the website www.heritagemalta.org

Freedom Day 31st March

On the 31st March 1979 Malta was for the first time not a military base of a foreign power and became independent de facto. Malta, due to its strategic position in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, just between Europe and North Africa, had always been occupied and targeted by occupiers' enemies. The latest of these was the British occupation under which Malta went through two World Wars as a military and naval base. During that time Malta was used as a base for troops and vessels. The significance of Freedom Day is not only tied to the tangible removal of the British base from Malta but also to the final release of Malta from foreign rule. Although this was not so long ago, Malta has come a long way from the destruction undergone in the wars and it has flourished into an independent state which has made various successes notwithstanding its insularity and scarce resources. On the 31st March, this National Day is celebrated by the parade and inspection of the guard of honour beside the Freedom Day monument in Vittoriosa and then the highlight of the day being the annual regatta which takes place in Grand Harbour in the afternoon.
