Inquisitor’s Palace, Birgu A Unique Architectural Gem Within the old maritime city of Birgu is the Inquisitor’s Palace, a former centre of power in early modern Malta, for, between 1574 and 1798 it served as residence and tribunal to the Inquisitor in his dual role of supreme judge of the Holy Office and Apostolic Delegate representing the Vatican’s interests in Malta. The building ‘official use’ knows its origins to the Knights of the Order of St John, who on settling in Birgu, adapted existing medieval buildings to set up their administrative hub including the old Magna Curia Castellania on the Northwest quarter of today’s site. Following the Order’s shift to the new city Valletta, the Castellania passed on to the Inquisition, triggering an organic growth that would spill into adjacent buildings until reaching the present footprint by the 1650s. Various Inquisitors undertook embellishment projects to transform the building into a palazzo romano typical of dignitaries in Baroque Rome, and a fitting and secure administrative hub for the Inquisitorial tribunal. This materialised through a major project undertaken by Inquisitor Francesco Stoppani between 1733 and 1734 to the designs of the resident High Baroque architect Romano Carapecchia. Following this, the stage was set, and any subsequent changes were mainly associated with a new use imparted by new residents. During the French interim the palace was used as headquarters for the French commander responsible for the Cottonera district, and during the British period it was first used as a military hospital until the 1830s, when it was converted into a ‘mess-house’ and residences for off duty officers stationed at the barracks of Fort St Michael in Senglea. Despite plans to demolish and build housing estates, the Inquisitor’s Palace passed on to the Museums Department in 1926 and what followed was a ten-year restoration and refurbishing period under the direction of the then Fine Arts curator Vincenzo Bonello. He reversed much of the unceremonious British interventions, to refurnish with historic furniture and reinstate dignity to a former centre of power. Following a direct hit on the Annunciation church and convent in 1941, the Inquisitor’s Palace provided shelter to the Dominican order until 1954. In 1966 it reopened to the public as the Inquisitor’s Palace, in 1981 it was inaugurated as the Folklore
12 l 13 Museum and in 1992 it housed the Ethnography Section.

Today the Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa is the only inquisitor’s palace still open to the public worldwide. It is administered by Heritage Malta and although it still houses the Ethnography Section, there is great caution in striking the right balance between a historic house museum, reflecting the building’s past political importance as one of the three centres of power in early modern Malta and a National Museum of Ethnography, highlighting the impact of the Inquisition on Maltese society and the role of religion in everyday life. The current experience is divided in three distinct sections, the domestic area at ground floor level includes the Castellania courtyard, the kitchen and the former eighteenth-century stores and service rooms used for an introductory display. The second section is the piano nobile and includes the grand staircase, the Camera d’Udienza, Cancelleria, chapel, the Ruffo apartments extending on two floors, the Pannellini quarters and the Biblioteca. Third part of the visitor’s experience are the spaces pertaining to the Holy Office itself including the prison warden’s room, the tribunal chamber, torture chamber and prison complex. The museum experience is complimented with an emphasis on a busy outreach programme of events and educational sessions. Readers are invited to like the Inquisitor’s Palace facebook fan page (facebook.com/inquisitorspalace) to keep abreast with all the curious s narratives and outreach initiatives.

IMMORTAL BELOVED CONCERT AT MEDITERRANEAN CONFERENCE CENTRE SUNDAY 29TH MAY AT 18:00
ENTER BEETHOVEN THE LOVER.... "My angel, my everything, my very self" Thus starts Beethoven’s letter addressed to his Immortal Beloved which has been the subject of countless speculations. Written in July 1812 it was apparently never posted, as it was found among Beethoven's documents after his death. The sisters Thérèse and Josephine von Brunsvik, Antonie and Bettina Brentano, Giulietta Guicciardi, Therese Malfatti and other names have been brought up as possible would be recipients of the letter. After more than 200 years since it was penned, the mystery is still as thick as ever, and nowhere close to being definitely resolved. Michael Laus will discuss and perform works dedicated to, and associated with these women who were all emotionally close to the great composer at one time or another during his life. There will also be live readings of parts of Beethoven's letter. The evening starts with one of the lesser-known Sonata Op.78, written for Countess Therese von Brunswick, who was a good pianist and pupil of Beethoven. This will be followed by the Waldstein Sonata in its first version. After its first performance, Beethoven took out the slow movement and published it separately as Andante favori, dedicating it secretly to Josephine von Brunswick. This Andante became popular for its inclusion in the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. The second half of the recital will open with the Sonata Op.110, one of Beethoven’s last works. This sonata was written after Josephine’s death and, rather strangely bears no official dedication. There is a theory that Beethoven composed it as a memorial to Josephine, even including folk tunes which the countess was fond of. The evening will come to an end with one of Beethoven's biggest works for piano, the Sonata Op.57, Appassionata. Michael Laus has been Resident Conductor of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra for 25 years, and lectures in Music Studies at the University of Malta. His numerous recordings, in the roles of pianist, harpsichordist and conductor, have won him international critical acclaim.

MQARET MALTESE CUISINE IS STUFFED FULL WITH UNIQUE SWEETS AND DELICIOUS TREATS. ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST POPULAR SWEETS IN MALTA IS THE IMQARET. IMQARET ARE DELICIOUS PASTRY PARCELS WHICH ARE FILLED WITH A THICK PASTE OF DATES AND SERVED WARM. ALTHOUGH DATES, AS A FRUIT, ARE NOT INDIGENOUS TO MALTA, THEY ARE VERY POPULAR AND EASILY BROUGHT OVER FROM NORTHERN AFRICA. ONCE TRADITIONS SAW THEM BEING HOME-MADE AT CHRISTMAS TIME, BUT THE AVAILABILITY FROM KIOSKS NOW MAKES THEM A YEAR LONG ENJOYMENT. Imqaret are found at roadside stalls, sold dripping and hot, just one for a taster or half a dozen at a go, in a paper bag for just a few cents. Most notable are the hawkers at the kiosks at the Valletta bus terminus and as from May, which is when the festa or local feast season begins, they can be found being sold from kiosks in one town square or another. As with every tradition in Malta, Imqaret are re-introduced in the popular culture, with fine restaurants and hotels introducing these pastries as a dessert into their menus, served hot and dry, crispy, sometimes alongside ice-cream.

An annual event that takes place right in the heart of Valletta is the Valletta Green Festival. The main attractions of this weekend-long event is the transformation of Valletta's main square, Pjazza San Ìor© with a huge floral carpet of some 80,000 potted plants. The infioriata is created from seasonal flowers, packed tightly together, resulting in a colourful mixture of whites, pinks, purples, yellows and reds. This year’s Valletta Green Festival will take place from the 6th to the 8th May and will be held every spring, with the intention of growing further over the coming years. A main attraction this year will be the secret gardens at the Archbishop’s Palace and the cloistered monastery of St Catherine, which will be open to the public for the first time in 400 years. The aim of the infioriata is to inspire residents to start developing green areas in their own towns and villages. Roof gardens, for example, are easy to set up, and not only make urban landscape more visually attractive, but they also lower temperatures in the hot summer months. The project is a Valletta 2018 collaboration with the Ministry for Sustainable Development, The Environment and Climate Change; the Environmental Landscaping Consortium; the Parks Department, as part of the Tree 4 U (34U) campaign; and WasteServ Malta Ltd.
