WELCOME... During May the Maltese Islands are covered in greenery and colourful flowers. The annual Valletta Green Festival brings thousands of colourful plants into the heart of Valletta and the countryside is ideal for walks to enjoy Malta’s outdoors during longer days. Festivals, entertainment and cultural performances are taking place throughout the month. There is something going on for everyone’s tastes, whether it is classical music, contemporary or modern dance. Events not to be missed during this month are the local village feasts and the annual Medieval Mdina Festival where you can admire as well as handle some medieval swords during the demonstrations in the old capital city of Malta.

HERZLICH WILKOMMEN... Im Mai erblüht die Natur auf den maltesischen Inseln und zeigt sich in bunten Farben. Das alljährliche Valletta Green Festival präsentiert Tausende von farbenfrohen Pflanzen im Herzen von Valletta. Die Landschaft und die längeren Tage bieten sich für Spaziergänge über Malta an. Festivals, Unterhaltung und kulturelle Veranstaltungen finden während des ganzen Monats statt. Es gibt etwas für jeden Geschmack, sei es klassische Musik oder zeitgenössischer und moderner Tanz. Nicht verpassen darf man diesen Monat die Dorffeste sowie das jährliche Medieval Mdina Festival, auf dem Sie mittelalterliche Schwerter schwingen und Demonstrationen von Kampfkünsten in der vormaligen Hauptstadt von Malta betrachten können.

BIENVENUE... Au mois de mai les îΙes de Malte et Gozo sont verdoyantes et pleines de fleurs de toutes les couleurs. Le Valletta Green Festival, festival annuel, apporte des milliers de plantes multicolores au cœur de la cité de La Valette. Par ailleurs la campagne maltaise est un lieu idéal pour faire des promenades en plein air et profiter des journées plus longues. Bref, pour passer plus de temps dehors ! Festivals, divertissement et représentations culturelles se déroulent tout au long du mois; donc des événements pour satisfaire tous les goûts : musique classique, danse classique ou contemporaine. A ne pas manquer pendant ce mois les fêtes de village maltaises ainsi que le Medieval Mdina Festival. Ce festival annuel transforme la ville de Mdina en cité médiévale où on peut admirer ainsi que manier des épées médiévales pendant les démonstrations dans l’ancienne capitale de Malte.

Friday 4 – Sunday 6 Valletta Green Festival. St. George’s Square, Valletta. Each year, the Valletta Green Festival transforms one of the largest open urban spaces in Valletta, Pjazza San Ġorġ, with its colourful signature feature – a huge floral carpet composed of some 80,000 potted plants. A yearly programme of family-friendly activities happening in the capital city and other localities have established this much-loved weekend-long festival as a fun and accessible platform for initiatives promoting environmental consciousness on the Maltese Islands. The festival also offers visitors rare glimpses into some of the capital city’s little-known historical treasures, including the four-hundred-year-old gardens of the Archbishop’s Palace and the Convent of St Catherine. www.valletta2018.org

Vendredi 4 – Dimanche 6 Valletta Green Festival. St. George’s Square, La Valette. Chaque année, le Valletta Green Festival transforme l’un des plus grands espaces ouverts urbains de La Valette, Pjazza San Ġorġ, de sa signature artistique pleine de couleurs – un énorme tapis de fleurs composé d’environ 80,000 plantes en pot. Un programme annuel d’activités pour les familles se déroule dans la ville capitale. En fait, d’autres localités ont établi ce festival très aimé d’une durée d’un week-end comme plateforme divertissante et accessible pour des initiatives promouvant la sensibilisation de l’environnement dans les îles maltaises. Gozo often steals the spotlight from mainland Malta and the third weekend of May promises to put the island on centre-stage yet again. The 18th of May will kickstart an extensive programme of events that will give visitors to the island a taster of Gozo’s incredibly active year-round cultural life. The island is renowned for its appeal to a range of people – from the adrenaline adventure seeker to the history buff and the opera lover, to the family with young children – it is an island with many promises, and Gozo Alive revolves around that. A live choir performance at the Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria

and a traditional alfresco dinner at the charming hamlet of Santa Luċija will herald the start of Gozo Alive. This will be followed by a full band concert by local heavyweights The Travellers, whose hits have been dominating local airwaves for the past three years. Saturday morning then sees various events held all around the island. Marsalforn will turn into a playground for those seeking a thrilling experience – with kayaks, paddleboards, segways, and canoes available to use for free. A 15-minute drive away, at Dwejra, there will be free archery and abseiling sessions – the latter is not for the feint hearted! The tiny village of Munxar will also host il-Festa

għat-tfal – a children’s celebration. Admission to historical places, like the Ġgantija temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will be free of charge on the 19th May. At the Ċittadella, historical re-enactment groups will revive history, with a Walk Through Time experience. Visitors can follow a historical trail with re-enactments covering different periods from the Medieval to WW2. During the evening, Victoria will become the hub of activity with exhibitions, artistic animators, and public performances taking place in its squares and streets. The suggestive Gozo Cathedral square will host a fashion show by renowned stylists Charles &

Ron, followed by a spectacular Flamenco Show against a backdrop of 3-D mapping on the Cathedral facade. Meanwhile, LED drummers, dancers, and buskers will be wowing the crowds at Republic Street. The fountain at St Francis Square will be dancing to the music as artists display their art in the surrounding streets. If your stomach rumbles while enjoying these activities, a visit to our food court at Savina Square will tame it down, with traditional food served all night. For those with a keen ear for music, two stages will be set at St George’s Square and at Independence Square – with the likes of Skarlett, Ramon Goose, Ivan Grech and Red Electrick entertaining the crowd. The night will be closed by international superstars RUDIMENTAL, an act whose hit singles include ‘Waiting All Night’, ‘These Days’, and ‘Feel the Love’. The group’s official videos have amassed more than half a billion hit on Youtube. The Gozo Alive weekend ends on Sunday with various activities ranging from car shows by Federazzjoni Maltija Vetturi Antiki, to water rides in Xlendi.

Malta World Music Festival The second edition of the Malta World Music Festival will return on the 18th and 19th of May at Fort St. Elmo in Valletta. Over the two nights, six international acts from all over the globe will be showcasing the diversity, breadth and vivacity that the modern world music scene has to offer. The line-up has something to offer music enthusiasts of all kinds. “I am very pleased to have managed to put together such a fantastic line-up for the second edition of the Malta World Music Festival. This surely will be festival like no other”. Artistic Director Renzo Spiteri. Among this year’s highlights include Grammy-nominated collective Afro Celt Sound System who will be headlining Friday night’s concert. Afro Celt Sound System are a European and African based collective who’ve been a ground-breaking force in music ever since the beginning. Cushion, who will be flying the flag for Malta, will kick off the festival on Friday night. This local Indian fusion outfit draws heavily from the Indian tradition, with dominant sitar licks and eastern vocalisations, all backed with keyboard ambience and pulsating bass and drum patterns. Their live performances often include professional dance choreography, fire juggling and buugeng acts. Friday night’s line-up is completed by Refugees for Refugees, a band of ten musicians under the leadership of the Belgian oud player Tristan Driessens who are actual refugees originating from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tibet. Chart-topping Spanish artist Ana Alcaide will open Saturday night’s festivities. Ana has played a pioneering role in the introduction and popularisation of the nyckelharpa in Spain. Rooted in ancient traditions yet resolutely modern, her compositions deftly blend musical styles from different cultures.

Alcaide will be followed by TRAD.ATTACK!, a trio of musicians who play their own interpretation of Estonian folk, which fuses rock, folk and bagpipe music. TRAD.ATTACK draws inspiration from archive recordings of the great Estonian folk singers and instrumentalists who created and performed music for work, leisure and festivities in olden times. The festival will draw to a close with a set from Electrik GEM! Guitarist GrĂŠgory Dargent and his motley band of instrumentalists - which includes oud, gadulka and tarhu players - merge sounds from the Balkans, the Middle East and the Orient as an attempt to musically transcribe the modern multifaceted Mediterranean metropolis. This ticket entitles the visitors to also view the Malta 5D show.

The agency’s historical sites and museums in Vittoriosa, the Inquisitor’s Palace, the Malta Maritime Museum and Fort St Angelo, are included in the Birgu Multisite Ticket. The same applies for the Rabat and Mdina area, including the National Museum of Natural History at the entrance of Mdina and Domvs Romana and St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat. These sites are included in other options: the Mdina-Rabat Cultural Experience apart from the said sites includes also the sight seeing train tour around Mdina, Rabat and Mtarfa, whilst on Sunday families can benefit from the Rabat Sunday Special ticket, valid for two adults and two children for the reduced price of €10. The two UNESCO World Heritage sites of Ta’ Ħaġrat and Skorba Temples in Mgarr, now open everyday, are included in a combined admission ticket, the Mġarr Multisite Ticket.

Ta’ Ħaġrat and Skorba Temples are also included in another combo ticket which includes Ta’ Bistra Catacombs in Mosta, open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Thus visitors planning to visit these sites on these specific days would find this combo ticket more suitable for their needs. On Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May, Mdina shall once again come to life for the Medieval Mdina Festival organised by the Mdina Local Council which this year is celebrating its 10th anniversary. During these two days visitors shall be entertained with re-enactments by foreign and local groups, Medieval Music, Sbandieratori, Illusionist, Jester, Falconry and birds of prey, Lectures, Concerts, Medieval Market, Medieval Kitchen and Children's activities. During the Festival the participants will perform in various corners and squares of Mdina which include battles, skirmishes, re-enactments of scenes from the Medieval Period, Sword Fighting, Archery, Medieval Tavern, Magic Shows, Live Music, Birds of Prey flights, Parades, Flag Throwing shows, and spontaneous re-enactments. One can also attend Lectures with various Medieval Themes or join in a guided tour around the City. During the Festival all the Tourist Attractions extend their opening hours and offer special reduced prices. The Medieval Mdina Festival serves as an educational exercise allowing both children and adults to get immersed in

Local Councils Events Celebrating Tradition, GOZO ALIVE Folklore and Culture

May Sunday 20th Irkottafest Ħal Kirkop A cultural event aimed to recall memories of the rural past of the village. Ħal Kirkop, a village in the South of Malta is extensively remembered for the tradition of IRKOTTA making. For seven consecutive years, the Ħal Kirkop Local Council succeeded to bring back to life, long forgotten crafts and works done by our ancestors for their living. Ħal Kirkop Local Council believes that through these cultural activities, the past of the village will be known by all those who visit this quite locality. A demonstration of how irkotta was made in early days will be one of the main interests on the day. During this event there will be a number of artisans exhibiting their work such as lace-making, weaving, traditional food preservation and other handmade work, amongst others. Moreover, an informative, art and photographic exhibition will be put up during this event. Ħal Kirkop Local Council will enrich this event by a variety of entertainment, comprising of traditional music, local talent and dance groups. Surely a not to be missed event!

Valletta 2018: May Highlights

Everyone is invited to be part of Valletta 2018, the European Capital of Culture. Our Cultural Programme offers something for everyone, inviting participants to explore the creative past, present and future of the Maltese Islands with a variety of events and initiatives. This month, visit St George’s Square in Valletta between the 3rd and 6th of May for the “Valletta Green Festival”, which transforms one of the largest urban open spaces in Valletta with an enormous floral carpet composed of some 80,000 potted plants. The programme also includes rare glimpses into some of Valletta’s little-known historical treasures. “Solar Cinema” kicks off on the 3rd at the Valletta Green Festival, with screenings in nijkerk. Meanwhile, a collaboration between pianist Gabi Sultana and visual artist Mark Dingli brings us “Amalgama” on the 26th of May in Valletta: an exploration of minimalistic

works by contemporary composers such as John Cage and Philip Glass, amongst others. If you’re a foodie with a taste for theatre, “Cantina” invites you to a theatre/food experience based on Brecht’s Saint Joan of the Stockyards, taking place between the 11th and 13th in Ta’ Qali. One may also discover traditional Maltese games in “Rulina”, an immersive experience with music, dancing, games and surprising interactions on the 12th in Mdina.
