WELCOME... With shorter days and also some rain, October makes Malta and Gozo look greener and still offering a variety of attractions. The mild Mediterranean climate makes it enjoyable for countryside walks and varies outdoor activities. Cultural events do not lack. October sees the opening of the theatrical season with performances taking place in all theatres across the islands. Do not miss Notte Bianca, which makes all public buildings in Valletta accessible to the public. The annual operas in Gozo take place again this month. October in Malta and Gozo is a month full of activities and this shows that the islands are alive throughout the year.

HERZLICH WILKOMMEN... Die Tage werden kürzer, und ab und zu regnet es etwas. So werden Malta und Gozo im Oktober grüner und bieten immer noch eine große Auswahl an Sehenswertem. Das milde mediterrane Klima bietet sich an für Spaziergänge in der freien Natur und andere Aktivitäten unter freiem Himmel. Auch an kulturellen Veranstaltungen fehlt es nicht. Im Oktober beginnt die Theatersaison mit Aufführungen auf allen Bühnen der Inseln. Auf gar keinen Fall verpassen dürfen Sie die “Notte Bianca”, die “Weiße Nacht”, in der alle öffentlichen Gebäude in Valletta für das Publikum geöffnet sind. Auch die jährlichen Opern setzen sich im Oktober fort.

Der Oktober in Malta und Gozo ist ein Monat voller Aktivitäten. Dies zeigt, dass die Inseln das ganze Jahr durch Unterhaltung bieten.

BIENVENUE... Des jours plus courts et quelques averses aussi. C’est le mois d’octobre ! Alors les îles de Malte et Gozo sont plus verdoyantes et offrent encore une diversité d’attractions. Par ailleurs le climat tempéré méditerranéen rend les randonnées à la campagne plus agréables et varie les activités en plein air. Les activités culturelles ne manquent pas non plus. En octobre débute la saison théâtrale avec des performances dans tous les théâtres des Iles maltaises. A ne pas manquer la Notte Bianca (la nuit des musées), où tous les édifices publics de La Valette sont ouverts et accessibles à tout le monde. Aussi, en octobre se tiennent encore une fois les opéras qui ont lieu tous les ans à Gozo. Le mois d’octobre à Malte et Gozo en est un plein d’activités ; ce qui montre que les Iles sont vivantes toute l’année.

Da non perdere la Notte Bianca, che rende accessibili al pubblico tutti gli edifici pubblici della Valletta. Le opere annuali a Gozo si svolgono di nuovo questo mese. Ottobre a Malta e Gozo è un mese pieno di attività e questo dimostra che le isole sono vive tutto l'anno.

Exploring an ancient vessel of the Lords of the Sea

A Phoenician shipwreck is not an everyday find. Therefore, the discovery of a Phoenician vessel which dates back to 700 BC, in the area of Xlendi in Gozo, was definitely a sensation. This finding was even more significant since this was the oldest wreck ever located in the Central Mediterranean. The latest Heritage Malta exhibition Exploring the Phoenician Shipwreck off Xlendi focuses on this exciting discovery. The Phoenician civilisation consisted of independent states along the coast of what is now Syria, Lebanon and northern Israel. The availability of wood in the area together with excellent tradesmanship, allowed them to construct formidable vessels which were able to carry extensive cargo and travel far. As they headed out into the Mediterranean Sea, they became renowned as skillful and brave maritime traders who managed to create an impressive commercial network across several countries. Indeed, some referred to them as the Lords of the Sea. Their trading routes are known to have extended as far up into Britain and to Mesopotamian ports and also east to mainland Greece and Crete. Yet the exact routes on which they travelled have remained elusive. Most shipwrecks

found in the Mediterranean date to the Roman Period, to around 2nd century BC, when the shipping industry was rapidly growing. Therefore the finding of this Phoenician shipwreck, which forms part of only a handful of known Phoenician vessels, is of prime significance since it sheds light on the possible trade routes of these mysterious merchants. Meanwhile, since most of the archaeological evidence in Malta which date to the Phoenician Period has been recovered mainly from funerary evidence, the discovery of a highly preserved shipwreck of that era, with the bulk of its cargo still intact and buried in sediments, is invaluable. It was an anomaly which was noted on the seabed during a systematic survey of the area to locate any archaeological findings which led to this discovery. A collaborative group was gradually created by archaeologist Prof. Timmy Gambin to put together a strategy adapted for an in-depth study of this shipwreck. The first sonar images of this find revealed that the cargo was tightly grouped together and appeared to be only slightly disturbed. Dozens of amphoras of various shapes

and sizes were clearly visible. Such a discovery suggested that the ship was leaving our islands and therefore Malta was on the Phoenician trade network at the time. Further research indicated the possibility of the existence of a second layer of amphorae. Following more than 10 years of research, the University of Malta, in collaboration with a number of partners, has utilized state of the art technologies to study and explore this exceptional Phoenician shipwreck. The next step was to venture down into the depths of 110 metres to reach this vessel, to excavate and document the findings, and to recover some of the ancient cargo. The exhibition will highlight some of the innovative techniques that were used in this project, including the methods utilized to recover these artefacts from the shipwreck, some of which were previously unknown in the archaeological record. Visitors can view these artefacts and enjoy audio-visuals of the archaeological

dive, to comprehend better this underwater discovery. Stories of trade, exchange, production and consumption in the Archaic Mediterranean will enrich further the experience of this visit. Exploring the Phoenician Shipwreck off Xlendi is taking place in collaboration with the University of Malta, and with the support of the Ministry for Gozo, Malta Tourism Authority, Malta International Airport and the Honor Frost Foundation. The exhibition is being held at Heritage Malta’s Gozo Area Office, Exhibition Hall, St Martin’s Quarter Street, Ċittadella. Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8.00am till 4.00pm. Notte Bianca 2018

Notte Bianca is here again! And this time it’s expected to be the biggest and best one yet. The White Night festival will hit Valletta on Saturday 6th October from 7pm to midnight. Every street, every square, every corner, every turn, every moment will be fully lit, animated, alive and filled with myriad surprises and fun for young and old alike. The five key areas will offer a veritable cornucopia of music, placing it on the same level as the very best music festivals ever organised in our country. The Notte Folk stage will give us a sweet confectionery of local modern folk artists with the icing on the cake being Italian singer and songwriter of worldwide renown, Vinicio Capossela, who is playing in Malta for the first time and preparing a unique gig especially for us. Notte Reggae takes us from such perennial classics as ‘Dance Music for the 80s Depression’ by The Rifffs to new favourites like ‘Mur Imma Mur’ by ManaTapu and several others, to eventually culminate with Ska phenomenon from the UK, The Selecter. Notte Metal will judder the city with the force of Heavy, Death, and Trash sounds from top local Metal bands, and finally reach its peak with Malta’s foremost Metal export, Beheaded. In contrast to all this thundering energy we have a different kind of power emanating from Notte Electronic, where local artists create ambient sounds and

spine-tingling vibes that will transport everyone to distant worlds and imaginary states, peaking with a top German act that is credited as a main pioneer in the genre, Tangerine Dream. The main stage will be Notte Special, where all can enjoy a lineup that is … well, absolutely special! nosnow/noalps, Tenishia with Tribali, Emma Muscat with Biondo and the UK band, Toploader, who were catapulted to international fame with their smash hit, ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’. For those wanting to try something different there’s a fine selection of styles like Jazz, Tango, Charleston, Brass Bands and Choirs in different parts of the capital. So many highlights, such as a children’s choir singing with a Maltese Għannej, to mention just one. Prepare to also be awed by theater shows, informative activities, events for children and grown-ups, from Clowns to Slackline (come discover what it is), Light Shows, Games, Corsairs, and even messing around with clay! The only problem will be to choose what to see first, what to see next, and what to see after that ... Will you manage to see everything? It’s Opera Time in Gozo! October Opera Month It’s that time of year again when Gozo’s two opera houses buzz with activity in preparation for the island’s annual opera season. This year, Aurora Theatre presents Giacomo Puccini’s timeless classic, Tosca, to be staged on the 13th October. La Traviata, the flagship of Festival Mediterranea 2018 will be performed on the 25th and 27th October 2018 at Teatru Astra. Every October, two opera productions are staged in Victoria and this year a full programme of musical events, spread through October, offers a bonanza of music to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The Gozo opera nights have not only established themselves as key cultural events in Gozo but have also gained international critical acclaim. In fact, In April 2014, Opera Now commented about Opera in Gozo: “if only English National opera and Covent Garden had that sense of cutthroat competition, how much edgier London’s operatic life would be”.

Gozo’s opera has developed remarkably in the past few decades, making the island synomymous with opera, for the high level achieved in operatic productions. Gozo International Kite & Wind Festival In this digital age, many children miss out on the simple joys of being outdoors. Flying a kite is one of these great pleasures, lost in time. Feel the thrill of holding a kite as it ascends into the skies until it almost becomes a colourful dot on a blue canvas. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like having happiness on a string, perhaps the ultimate carefree pastime. Gozo will be giving visitors the chance to experience the joys of this ancient tradition during the third weekend of October in the first edition of the Gozo International Kite and Wind Festival. This is the right opportunity to feel at one with nature as kites of all shapes and sizes soar the skies over GÄ§arb, Gozo. The festival will feature traditional and professional kite flyers from Europe and Japan, while also providing room for visitors to come out and experience what it is like to fly a kite. People may also register their interest to attend kite making workshops organised as part of the festival programme. The area near San Dimitri chapel, out to the north of l-GÄ§arb, will see a flurry of activity with food stalls, entertainment, and games complementing the main activities. A Unique Race

Not Only For The Yachting Enthusiasts

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is an annual event that starts and finishes in Malta. Covering a distance of 606nm (1,122km), the participating yachts depart from Valletta’s Grand Harbour and pass through Stromboli, Pantelleria and Lampedusa in Italy and all the way back to Valletta. The fastest race was made in 2007 by George David’s Rambler (USA) in a record time of 47 hours and 55 minutes. Marking the close of each Mediterranean yachting season, the Rolex Middle Sea Race is a navigator’s race with numerous puzzles posed by the corners of its spectacular course that demand intense preparation. An anticlockwise circumnavigation of Sicily, it is unique in offshore yacht racing in that it starts and finishes in the same place. The active volcanic island of Stromboli – the lighthouse of the Mediterranean – is the symbol of the race, often illuminating the night sky with eruptions for crews passing after sunset. This year marks the 32nd edition of the race and it starts on Saturday 20 October at 10:00
