The Exhibition: ‘1565 - The Great Siege Of Malta’
In 1565 all eyes were set on the Maltese Islands, as these were turned into a glory arena in which the mighty Order of St John and the colossal Ottoman Empire clashed fiercely. The siege continued for around three months, until the sudden retreat of the fragmented Ottoman army, led to the victory of the knights and the Maltese people. 450 years after this epic battle took place, Heritage Malta will be once more engaging worldwide interest on the Maltese Islands, through the spectacular international exhibition ‘1565 – The Great Siege of Malta’. Hosted at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta, under the Patronage of HE, the President of Malta, this exhibition will be presenting over 150 objects which have been carefully selected from Malta and abroad to narrate this legendary saga.
Among the distinguished local exhibits, visitors will be able to see original correspondence of Christian spies on the Great Siege, documentation concerning women and children who took part in the conflict, the diary of Balbi di Correggio who participated in this battle as an arquebusier, armour worn by Grand Master Jean de Valette and by the Ottoman Spahi, fire arms which were used by corsairs, and a slave chain donated by a man who succeeded to return safely to Malta after he was taken as a slave by the Ottomans.

Moreover, this exhibition will also include a number of artefacts from international institutions such as: Grand Master’s L’Isle Adam’s eight pointed cross, several parts of decorated armour that will be amalgamated with their counterpart components from the Palace Armoury for the first time after 200 years, and the helmet of Emperor Charles V. These objects and others have been brought to Malta from the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Austria, the Kremlin Museums in Russia, Palazzo Venezia in Rome, the Order of St John’s Museum in Clerkenwell, the Royal Armouries of Leeds, and the Royal Artillery Museum of Woolwich. A highlight of the exhibition will be located within the Throne Room, whereby through an array of high-end visual equipment and projections, the magnificent D’Aleccio frescoes will be brought to life and visitors will be able to immerse themselves back in time, in order to experience virtual moments from the Great Siege. A show not to be missed! The exhibition will be accompanied with a full colour catalogue available from the museum shop. Opera Is In The Air! In Gozo

Opera is in the air in Gozo! As October draws near, preparations start in full swing for the two operas that are held in the two main opera theatres in Victoria. Volunteers from the two theatres are busy preparing the costumes and scenes. Over the years have seen emotions being sung by some internationally renowned artists who have graced the stages of the Astra and Aurora opera theatres. Gozo’s opera season opens with Giuseppe Verdi’s three-act grand opera “La Traviata” being held on Saturday, October 17th at the Aurora opera theatre. Elena Mosuc will be leading the cast of the 2015 production of “La Traviata” in the role of Violetta. She will toast the most famous brindisi of all with Stefan Pop, who shall feature in the role of Alfredo, while household name Marzio Giossi returns to Aurora as Giorgio Germont. Giossi has interpreted Conte di Luna in last year’s “ll Trovatore” held in the same theatre. Mosuc is no stranger to “La Traviata” after her successes at the Teatro alla Scala (Milan), the Bavarian State Opera and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Staged in 18th century Paris, and based on a play by Alexandre Dumas, “La Traviata” has always been considered as the ultimate operatic fashion-parade of music, drama, scenery and music.

On the 29th and 31st October, Giacomo Puccini’s opera "La Bohème” will be produced at the Teatru Astra, also in Victoria. La Bohème is all about beautiful singing. It is considered as quintessentially emotional, as Puccini is well known for his creative powers when it comes to composing endearing melodies which set him firmly among the finest of Italian composers. The opera was premiered in 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, and has become part of the standard Italian opera repertoire. Leading the cast will be renowned Maltese soprano Miriam Cauchi as Mimí. Miriam Cauchi’s role as Mimí will be her eight appearance in a leading role at Teatru Astra. She also interpreted the role of Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello, Gilda in Rigoletto, Violetta in La Traviata, Sour Angelica in the opera that bears the same name, and Nedda in Pagliacci. The production is expected to inaugurate the 14th edition of the festival ‘Mediterranea’, an annual festival of culture that this year will include concerts, site-visits, lectures, exhibitions and drama. Surely Gozo will once again attract culture lovers, as it proves again to be a cradle for excellent productions and cultural events.

The Traditional Maltese Ftira

Have you ever wondered how the traditional Maltese bread dough would taste when baked in a traditional cast iron oven heated by fire wood and topped with a variety of typical fillings? At Nenu The Artisan Baker one unique selling item to its menu are the old-style ftajjar. These are not the circular loaves of crunchy bread we are more accustomed to, but a sort of open galette, the rim fold up to hold the richest filling a ftira has ever seen – a few to mention eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, anchovies, capers, olives, onions, garlic, aubergines, marrows, chicken, meat, herbs and Maltese sausage. The traditional ftiras are nutritionally high in value. Traditional cooking offered by Nenu contributes towards the required intake of complex carbohydrates (starches), fibre, iron and vitamin B. Undoubtedly, contrary to general belief, the ftiras are, generally, low in fat. The base of the ftira is what one would find in a typical white bread which is scientifically supported by studies which claim that 76 % of its calories emanate from carbohydrates, 13 % from protein and only 11 % from fat. There is no disputing the fact that most of Nenu’s customers are magnetically drawn there by these rectangular troughs of the most delicious bread, filled with all sorts and baked there and then in front of you in the same old oven (though thoroughly restored) in which generations of bakers prepared bread for generations of Valletta families in the area known as Porto Salvo.
Quality Assured Seal
Malta Tourism Authority The Malta Tourism Authority has long recognized that for the continued success in any industry , but in particular to the sustainability of our tourism industry in Malta, all future investments need to focus on quality of product and service. This is being achieved through various initiatives, not only in supporting embellishment projects but also in other various quality targeted schemes. With this in mind the Industry and HR Development Unit developed the Quality Assured seal (QA). The all encompassing QA seal which is a voluntary scheme, was first developed in 2008 and saw the first Destination Management Companies (DMCs) awarded in 2009. Today 18 DMCs are holders of this prestigious seal. Two years later the scheme was extended to visitor attractions and there are now 20 such enterprises certified. A new initiative was taken in late 2014 where this was then extended to include restaurants, whereby in the first awarding ceremony which took place in May with the first 71 restaurants being recognized for their quality and standards. For a DMC, restaurant or visitor attraction to qualify they must satisfy a number of stringent criteria and undergo either an audit or a mystery guest visit. Once this takes place the reports are submitted to the respective monitoring committees and a final decision is made. In each case the detailed report is presented to the entity thus offering professional feedback and the opportunity to develop further. The applications for all three categories are once again open and one may apply by visiting www.qualityassuredmalta.com which is a specific website dedicated to promote and market the Quality Assured entities. For more information do not hesitate to email us on qualityassured@visitmalta.com
